The Gresford Showgirl Competition has a proud history of celebrating local rural women as proud ambassadors for our district. Entry is open to local women aged 18-24, and is a chance to see behind the scenes of the show and represent our community at Zone level. The event is judged at our annual Art Show Opening, the night before the show commences.

Gresford also runs a Junior Showgirl Competition for local teens aged 12-15.

This is held on the Saturday of the Show and is a great way for young local women to participate in our show.

GAPS Annual General Meeting 2020

Members of GAPS held their AGM on the 18th February. Noel Brown as Returning Officer oversaw the return of Sharon Lawrence to the role of President; Allyn Litchfield to Vice-President; Kel Merriman to Secretary; Lyndell Osmond to Treasurer; Denise Sellens and Coleen Litchfield to Event Manager and Assistant; and Tony Schultz to Equipment Officer. Donna Chisholm was newly elected as Vice-President and Glenda Smith as Promotions Officer.

Sharon thanked the outgoing committee and members for all the hard work in the previous year, which included the production of Radio 2GR8; involvement in Gresford Public School’s 150th celebration; leading of Paterson Rotary Club’s Carols in the Park; and contribution to community benefits in terms of access to the wheelchairs provided by GAPS, school prizes and the hiring out of equipment. Some GAPS executive members are also involved in the School of Arts committee and the Community Group.

GAPS is always looking for new members interested in being involved in a vibrant and proactive community group. The ability to sing, dance or act is useful but not essential. Willingness to participate and a sense of humour are the only pre-requisites.

• Smear any stain with washing up detergent. It sucks out the grease.

Or dab a little shampoo on stain and rinse with cold water.

• When knitting use a dab of nail polish (clear) to join wool in the middle of a row.

Also spray hairspray on wool end before threading the needle. It keeps it stiff.

• To avoid thread getting tangled or knotted, run needle and thread through a fabric softener.

Hunter LLS Incentives Hunter Local Land Services wants your help to improve the health and water quality of the Paterson, Allyn and Williams Rivers. These important river systems not only support our local environment, they supply our drinking water catchment.

Hunter Water is supporting Hunter Local Land Services to offer incentives to local landholders along these rivers to undertake works that will improve the health of the catchment and water quality.

Projects could include improving your grazing management practices, providing off-stream watering systems – eg new troughs for livestock, riparian works such as revegetating riverbanks and improving effluent and nutrient management on farm.

Areas of interest include upstream of Gresford on the Paterson and Allyn Rivers and above the Seaham Weir on the Williams River. Gresford BillyCart Derby rolls into its 21st year valley, as well as locals who know it's always a fun day out."

Most 21sts involve a fair party and Gresford is promising a Billycart Derby like no other to celebrate 21 years of the iconic country racing festival this Easter Saturday 11 April 2020. With jam packed action on and off the track, it promises to be another great family fun affair!

"There's not a lot of villages the size of Gresford that can put on an event for 5,000 people and maintain that event for 21 years," said Committee President Kris Doyle. "It's a testament to this community and all the volunteers over the last 21 years that this event continues to be such a highlight on the calendar for the whole Hunter region.

"Over the many years of racing we have seen plenty of spills, thrills and pothole dodging and 2020 promises all that action and more!"

Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors and the wider community, the annual event has raised countless thousands of dollars that has been donated to more than 30 charities across the Dungog Shire, Hunter Valley and beyond. "While we focus on giving locally first, we are always keen to lend a hand where we can," said Kris. "This community has been very fortunate and we make sure all the local schools, sporting groups, community support agencies and local groups get involved and receive some much needed funds to go towards projects and facilities that help our community to continue to grow. "It's wonderful we get so much support from tourists visiting our

Greetings to Culture Vulture readers.

In 2020 Dungog is quite a hub for the Arts, attracting many artists to establish studios and galleries. Art lovers and visitors to Dungog can enjoy browsing the interesting antique shops and contemporary art and craft galleries. Good coffee and tasty food is available at a variety of charming sidewalk cafes along Dowling Street.

The gallery will showcase a variety of printmaking techniques by Helene and Jeanne including collagraph, etching, drypoint and monotype. Their artworks are landscape based but often with an abstract element that intrigues the viewer.

Gallery on Dowling is a new gallery in Dungog. It is an initiative of Helene Leane and Jeanne Harrison, both printmakers and painters who have exhibited widely in the Hunter over many years.

Jeanne and Helene are active members of Newcastle Printmakers Workshop and have exhibited in the Hunter Valley and Sydney. They are both prize-winning artists.

Now that the hot & horrific months of summer are leaving us – let this be a distant memory. Cherish the happy moments spent over the last couple of months, especially when time was spent with family & friends.

Everyone should be settling back enjoying life once again & pursuing their many regular activities & favourite pastime, etc. Branch members will be busy planning the cooking & catering in showground dining room at the annual Gresford Show on March 13 & 14.

LAND COOKERY COMPETITION: Our CWA members: Teena Inkster, Dottie Hilliar, Betty Kelehear & Linda Jackson were all awarded First Place certificates for their various cakes in the Land Cookery Competition. Local resident, Tina Fleming received 3 First Place certificates for her entries, including one for strawberry jam. Ailsa Stewart from the Belmont CWA Branch was the cookery judge.

BOOK CLUB: This month’s Book Club will be held from 3 pm on Saturday, March 21 in the CWA rooms. The book for March is: ‘The Weekend’ by Charlotte Wood.

FRENCH CLASSES: I must apologise to Glenda who runs the French classes. In the February issue of the Gresford News, I gave the wrong phone number – I have rapped my knuckles several times for making such a mistake. The correct phone number is: 4938 9456. Anyone attending French classes for the first time, is asked to ring Glenda on the above number beforehand.

Classes are usually held on the first & third Wednesday of the month in CWA rooms from 11 am – 12.30 pm. They will continue until July. Everyone takes their turn in providing morning tea & a gold coin donation is will cover printing costs.

FACT: About 50 million years ago, whale ancestors were land dwellers. They moved to the sea & gradually evolved into swimming creatures over a period of 8 million years. Whales are mammals – breathe air & suckle their young with milk. They have paddle shaped flippers that enclose hand bones with 5 fingers. As embryos, whales have tiny back limbs that disappear at birth. Hippos are the closest living relatives of whales, although they were not ancestors of the whale.

Red Dog

Louis de Bernières This charming account of the famous ‘Dog of the North-West’ in Western Australia was put together by de Bernières after he went to a literary festival there and discovered the statue that was erected to honour the red kelpie outside the town of Dampier. He spent two weeks interviewing those who had known him, or known of him, and created an entertaining tribute.

The book is written in a style that would accommodate a wide range of readers, of all ages. Without being over-fanciful, the writer tries to imagine the world from Red Dog’s perspective. For example, on chancing upon a dog show, ‘…he decided that, of all the people there, the judges were clearly the most important. In order to make his mark he walked with great dignity up to their table, and peed on one of its legs.'

There is humour and playfulness in the writing, and also much poignancy, such as in the depiction of Red Dog’s sense of loss when his chosen ‘owner’ dies. Red Dog was an obstinate, independent, adventurous, gregarious and opportunistic animal who made friends with many lonely people as he travelled throughout the backblocks of WA. He demanded lifts and welcomed food and affection from hundreds of people, who were willing to accommodate his needs. Louis de Bernières has helped maintain the legend.

All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder.

It's the first time Gresford has hosted the Zone Finals, and thrillingly 19 Showgirls from as far away as Baradine, Coonabarabran, Lithgow and Oberon and across the Hunter came to our valley for the event.

ambitions, making it very difficult for the judges to choose the winners. Every entrant handled themselves beautifully, especially given the unfortunate weather which saw Mother Nature deliver a 46 degree evening with high humidity.

In the end it was Merriwa Podiatrist Lauren Eccles, and Psychological Science student Hannah Yeo from Dunedoo Show, who were selected to wear the Zone 5 sashes to Sydney. The judges remarked on how each and every entrant represented their communities with pride, passion and commitment to improve life in rural areas.

Congratulations Chris – 33 years service I wanted to present this article to congratulate Chris Crouch (nee Porter) for her work, time and friendship carried out at the Gresford Bowls Sport & Recreation Club. This was also a good opportunity to recollect some memories and history of our local club here in East Gresford which has been aided by community volunteer help since it first opened in January 1956.

I had arranged with Chris to chat with her while she was staying in her family home at Martins Creek. On this particular day some decent rain had occurred earlier in the morning (18th January). Since her retirement in late October, Chris has continued her stays between East Gresford and Martins Creek. While chitchatting with Chris, I asked "How are you finding retirement?" To this Chris readily replied "Just wonderful!" Chris said she has been keeping busy and is essentially "enjoying life".

As we were talking, a good friend of Chris' arrived – Radar Lawrence. Radar had also been involved with the club for a very long time – since the age of 17 –particularly with social bowls. Chris, Radar, Greg and I began recollecting memories of the Gresford Bowling Club in its heyday.

Chris recalled that her bar work/career began at the Farmers Hotel in Vacy as a casual on Friday nights and on footy days. She also gained other casual bar work and cleaning at the Court House Hotel in Paterson. Not to mention working Thursday nights at the Paterson

Tavern. Socially Chris and members of her family – including her mum and dad, Alan and Marianne Porter – would visit the Gresford Bowling Club.

would change the kegs over and help in all aspects. Arthur would quite often try to talk Chris into getting some bar work at the club. Finally Chris relented, beginning firstly on a casual basis and then transitioning to being a permanent.

Every so often after getting her job, Chris said she would say semi-lightheartedly to Arthur "I will never forgive you for this".

Chris said she got to try and quite a few bar staff throughout her time. Names included Jenny Madden, Pam Crouch and Renée Joliffe.

One brilliant night held at the club quite a few years ago was the Paterson River Football Club’s yearly presentation night.

Special guest was a very well known Australian footballer – Mark Ella. Chris said there was a lot of people there.

Early club dress code for staff consisted of Working with her behind the bar was black pants for men and women. Women also had the option of wearing a black skirt. Pam Crouch, Jenny Madden and Debbie Chick – all wearing blue and white with Both sexes wore a white shirt. Women's the inclusion of having had their hair blouses were accompanied by a black tie.

days. Prevalent beer at the time was Tooheys Draught White and Black and Tooths Black.

Some great cooking teams have catered over time. These included Warren (Fox) Marquet and co, Jenny and David Crouch, Doreen and Tom Griffiths (who made the 'Best Ever Home Style Meals'), Chris recalls, and Marge and Brian Squires. A number of Chinese caterers have since then provided great food.

Both Chris and Radar stated that a local Fishing Club has existed within the Gresford Bowling Club. Together they remembered how one day there were 30 to 40 people present within the club when long time patron and bowler Mr Vince Lawrence decided to cook up the fish cought that day. So into the frying pan the fish went to be cooked up. "The whole ordeal stunk out the club", Chris said with a bit of a chuckled laugh.

Bowling on the green has always been integral to the overall existence of the club. Many local men and women have involved themselves in this still regular recreational sporting game. Mrs Audrey Lawrence, Radar's mum, being one of the

Rotational bowling days occurred with other local bowling clubs included Dungog, Clarence Town, Singleton, Greta and Millers Park–Branxton.

Chris stated these particular days were always brilliant. Radar had intervened by saying "that’s when the good old cooks were present" such as Mrs Beth Turnbull and Mrs Phyllis Draper. Radar remembers the afternoon teas which consisted of sponge cakes, scones and jam, slices and much more with coffee and tea. Radar went on to say "you don’t see or have this any more. Now it’s snackfood heat it up such as party pies, sausage rolls and spring rolls."

I asked Chris to best sum up the atmosphere of the club when it really did thrive. A moments thought, then Chris replies pensively "people in general got along better. They were much more involved with one another.

Dances, card nights and bowling days were all brilliant." Radar agreed with this quite readily.

Chris said she always enjoyed talking to the older people. "Even the littlest things that they would convey and the every day happenings within their lives." Chris said she will miss not seeing people from the club as often now that she has retired after 33 years and hasn't been attending the club as much.

On Saturday evening, 23rd of November 2019, some family and friends gathered for a farewell get together. Yes you guessed right – at the Gresford Bowls Sport & Recreation Club. Chris received a lovely watch as a farewell gift, even though Chris herself was looking forward to receiving keys to a new car. One can only chuckle at this, as Chris did following her wishful words.

In the meantime Chris has done some travelling and when she can catches up with her cousin at Forster. It was only the other weekend that Greg and I visited Forster with her and enjoyed a tribute music show together – another favourite pasttime Chris enjoys. In April it is another cruise for a well-deserved local friend.

Travelling stock reserve leases extended To support local farmers contending with a third year of continued drought conditions, Hunter Local Land Services has further extended Long-term Grazing Permits for the majority of Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs) in our region.

Permit holders have been offered a 12 month extension, to the end of 2020 – where conditions on the TSRs allow. It’s the second year in a row drought conditions has led to the offer of extensions to existing permit holders.

The same extension will apply to Short-term Grazing Permits; however, Hunter Local Land Services will be reverting to the former practice of issuing these permits on a month by month basis.

General Manager Brett Miners said it’s one of the ways the organisation can take some pressure off producers, as well as ensure best practice management of these public assets.

“We understand the major impact the drought continues to have on local producers in our region,” said Mr Miners.

“By extending the TSR leases, we hope we removed an unnecessary stress and workload for local farmers at a time when pressures were already heightened.”

Hunter Local Land Services is thankful to the permit holders for the way they have been carefully managing feed and water supplies on the reserves. “We are committed to the effective management of our Hunter TSRs and, as groundcover and pasture species diversity are the primary indicators of biological health on these reserves, it’s important we continuously assess their condition,” said Mr Miners. “Nearing the end of long and short term grazing permit lease periods in 2019, our Officers inspected each TSR to determine the biological health of each and this resulted in numerous lease extensions and a handful of lease suspensions due to degraded conditions.”

It is up to each permit holder to decide if they wish to accept the extension, and Hunter Local Land Services is reminding all permit holders payment plans are available at any time, if they require financial assistance.

Opportunities for reinstatement of long and short term grazing permits may occur after a significant improvement in the season, when the biological health of these reserves have substantially improved.

Mayoral Update

24 February 2020 Grant Funding Local State Member, Michael Johnsen has informed me that Dungog Shire Council has received grants funding under the Stronger Country Communities program.

Gresford Sports Ground received full funding for the upgrade of changerooms and the kiosk. The Bennett Park application for improved drainage has been partially funded, and a Paterson Sportsground Reserve has also received funding. I believe Lostock Scouts group was also awarded some funding under this program.

Brig O’ Johnston Bridge Transport for NSW has advised it will retain ownership of Brig O’Johnston Bridge, Clarence Town and will be responsible for the upgrade of the Bridge as a State Heritage asset. With this clear advice we can now move to build a new two-lane bridge at this location and improve access to Clarence Town.

Dungog Council has secured funding for a new parallel bridge including $5.5M from the NSW State Government and $8.8M from the Federal Government.
