Ready to Ramble The Paterson Allyn Garden Group is hoping for fine weather on Sunday April 7 for their inaugural garden ramble. Come along for a beautiful drive from Paterson to Allynbrook to see five gardens, with breaks for coffee and lunch. The gardens are located at Paterson, Vacy, Gresford, St Mary-on-Allyn and Allynbrook. See page 6 for more details.
Picnics can be purchased or pre-ordered at the Paterson Service Station Café, Vacy General Store and Café and Gresford Cross-Roads Café. People who want to get involved and improve our local communities. People with a vision, people who want to help out, people who want to meet and socialise, people who like a challenge and most importantly people who just want to come along and be part of our group. Gresford District Community Group is looking for new members to be a part of our committee that works for our communities and to make our villages better places to live for everyone.

Applications are sought for committee members for the Vacy Sportsground 355 committee Council is seeking applications from a good mix of residents with a variety of skills, ages and backgrounds for the Vacy Sportsground 355 Committee. The appointment term is for four years and all Members will be required to conform to the Council Code of Conduct and operate the Facility in accordance with Sec 355 of the Local Government Act 1993. Nationals Roads and Bridges Plan From "Mayoral Update Mon 25 Feb"... NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey, announced the Nationals promise to take back responsibility for the regional road network and for an increased commitment for local roads throughout Regional NSW. Minister Pavey told me that Dungog would be prioritised in this process and that we have the ear of the Deputy Premier to ensure that this prioritisation is fulfilled. The Minister also announced that to access funding for local roads we will no longer require to meet the benefit cost ratio, which usually damages Dungog’s chances due to low traffic counts. Dungog’s regional roads that are eligible for reclassification are MR 101 from the Maitland boundary to Mid Coast boundary on Stroud Hill Rd (via Paterson, Wallarobba, Wirragulla); MR 301, from the Port Stephens boundary near Seaham to Wirragulla (via Clarence Town and Brookfield); MR 128, from the Singleton boundary at Glendonbrook to East Gresford (via Gresford); RR7764, from East Gresford, over Bingleburra to the roundabout on Dowling St (via Chichester Dam Rd and Hooke St) and

How Does This Funding Announcement Affect the Special Rates Variation Application (SRV)? The funding that has been announced is welcome, however, the SRV is still an important part of the solution for our future. Dungog Shire Council needs to implement all of the measures in our strategy, including the SRV. Dungog Shire Council will remain reliant on government funding even with the introduction of an SRV. The peak country property sales period is Autumn, Winter, into Spring. I know it's hot and very dry, but there are still a lot of things that can be done for those who intend listing their Homes and Farms in Autumn, and start getting your property market ready, now. If its too hot to get out in the paddocks, you may consider getting your files in order to list. I am here to help you. With 25 years experience in helping Vendors get properties ready to market, I am happy to provide free advice, email or give me a call.
PRE LIST CHECK LIST: Find relevant DA approvals for Dwellings, Pool, Septic System, Shedding. Very important to have the Occupation Certificate from Council Final Inspection once building has been completed. Council will have copies for you. You can go to Council and inspect your own Property’s file and get copies of anything you may need. Just give Council prior notice so the File can be found in Archived files. Building certificate: if Final Inspection wasn’t completed by your Builder, you can organise a Council Building Inspection and get a compliant Building Certificate. Now is the time to do this, prior to listing for sale, without time pressures. Stops issues later when you want a buyer to sign the Sale Contract. Its wonderful to have all the answers needed to ensure there will be a smooth sale contract

Laura Greco (Newcastle University) will be doing an introductory talk on genes and DNA, and how our ability to edit and reprogram genes could cure diseases, character select our own children and result in a real ‘Jurassic Park’. And Alex Kelly (Biofoundry) is the manager of Sydney first PC-1 compliant community science lab which is making insulin affordable with a citizen science approach to medical research. He will discuss the ‘Open Science’ movement, DIY genetic engineering, biohacking, synthetic biology and CRISPR/CAS9 kits.

Robert Drewe Robert Drewe is a versatile writer who successfully mixes and matches different aspects of Australian life in this novel. The title is based on both the central character, daughter of an anthropologist, and the 100,000 year old skeleton her father has based a new theory of evolution and human migration on. Against the backdrop of ancient human settlement in the outback Drewe superimposes a very current story of escaped refugees and an urban stalker.

The living Grace carries the story. She retreats to a wildlife sanctuary with a heavy emphasis on crocodiles in the Kimberley in order to escape her metropolitan stalker, who has insinuated himself on her through their shared interest in films. Grace was a film critic which put her in the public eye, and her stalker is an erotomaniac who fancies himself attractive to her. The novel is a colourful combination of aboriginal and natural lore; anthropological theory and suburban satire. Grace proves to be a resilient and admirable character who gives warmth to a novel with disparate themes. All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder.

Lomatia arborescens – Tree Lomatia
by Noel Jupp OAM, Dip Hort, QP Dept Ag & Fisheries There are several other species of Lomatia but only one other variety is tree like and that is Lomatia fraseri, the Silky Lomatia that occurs from the Otway Ranges in Victoria to the New England Range escarpment at Main Range in Queensland and west to Mt Kaputar National Park.
Plants that only grow in nature at high elevation always intrigue me as most of the time they grow quite well when planted at lower elevations. This one is confined in nature to above 1000 meters and yet it grows quite happily on my river flat. Lomatia belongs to the Proteaceae family making them first cousins to things like Grevillea and although not as showy as Grevillea they do have a subtle uniqueness that helps them stand out. The name Lomatia is derived from the Greek word lomation meaning a small fringe referring to the winged seed and arborescens is a Latin word meaning becoming tree like. In nature this one can grow up to 25 metres tall with a stem diameter of around 50cm. The furthest south that it occurs is recorded as Mt Allyn (Bald Knob) but I have actually recorded it in the lower part of Masseys Creek State Forest. So far I have only planted one out on my riverbank
Others of note are Lomatia myrocoides, the River Lomatia which occurs from the coast and ranges in Victoria to the Wyong area in NSW and occurs in most gullies, creeks and river flats and the other species of note is Lomatia silaifolia, the Crinkle and I am surprised as to how well it is Bush. Gresford Billy Cart Derby and Easter Fair 20th Anniversary Easter Saturday, April 20th Park St raceway, East Gresford starting at 9am. 20th Anniversary, wow has it really been twenty years since the first cart raced down Park Street, East Gresford and they said it wouldn't last. To mark our 20th year we want drivers to dress your cart, go retro and dress up. What was the fashion in 1999? Do some research as we will be rewarding the best dressed cart and driver for our special anniversary race day. Spectators – go digging in your wardrobe and pull out those old clothes you have been keeping for a special day – that special day is here. As they all have different identities and various unique characteristics, we would like to deliver Local Strategic Planning Statements for each of our five main towns/villages, that is Dungog, Clarence Town, Paterson/ Martins Creek, Vacy and Gresford/East Gresford. A series of community workshops are being planned to help inform Councillors and Council staff on what should be included in the narrative about our towns and villages, as expressed in these LSPSs. We will conduct workshops in each of the five centres mentioned above. We will start this process in Dungog in conjunction with the Dowling Street discussions.
Priorities for the Year I have been discussing with Councillors what they think the priorities for this year should be. I have asked the GM to schedule a strategic workshop to discuss this as a group. We can then work on actioning some of these priorities. I have also asked Councillors to think about what may be on their wish-list for grant funding applications, in line with our Community Strategic Plan. Of course much of this thinking will be informed by the results of the community workshops, as mentioned above. Top of the list for me, particularly over the next couple of months, is a continued effort in lobbying State and Federal MPs and candidates for better and more equitable funding and funding models, particularly for our roads and bridges. Then implementing the strategies that Councillors have identified to direct us toward a pathway of sustainability. I would like to work more closely with the community on identifying your priorities as well. I will continue to conduct my mobile office throughout the Shire and encourage you to come and see me to discuss your thoughts, ideas, or your gripes and see how we can work together for the betterment of the Shire.
New Labor Candidate for Upper Hunter Cessnock City Council’s Deputy Mayor, Melanie Dagg, has been endorsed by the Labor Party as its candidate for the Upper Hunter Electorate in the State Election. The GM and I will arrange to meet with Melanie within the next couple of weeks. We will be seeking a reaffirmation of the Labor Party’s commitments for Dungog Shire.

SCHOOLS GALA DAY On Wednesday 20th February GVFC hosted the ever successful inter schools gala day at SunScorp Stadium. Much fun was had by all with attendance from Gresford, Vacy, Paterson and Iona schools. This year saw a big increase from the previous year from approx 100 to 170 participants. There were plenty of new kids that had not played the beautiful game before that hopefully got a taste of the benefits of this team focused game to pursue this further.
GVFC has recently donated both balls and small sided goals where needed to the 4 schools above last month to drive and promote sports participation at school and potentially club registration with GVFC for this season.
Cowley who wins an official Scorps Beanie. A special mention goes to William Venter who was the very first registered player for season 2019. William registered on the 3-01-19 and as a special bonus he will also receive a Scorps Beanie.
