Gresford Landcare Group In February Gresford Landcare met at Ken & Jane chandler’s property to learn from their experience of caring for their riverbank. The riverbank was fenced off from cattle 15 years ago and the walk showed both successes and failures with the very difficult task of slowing errosion and caring for the riparian vegetation. The walk provided the opportunity to identify different grasses & weeds and see successful casuarina plantings.

Gresford District Landcare meets on the second Tuesday each month and the next meeting will continue the riverbank theme with a visit to “Duninald” 1525 Paterson Rd at 6.00pm.

We are keen to see a world record broken or at least a new Gresford record set. All dummies are new and sealed for your protection and you can take it home with you when you are finished! In light of the outcomes of the merger process and Dungog Council’s need to stand alone, we need to explore ways to expand our revenue sources to ensure we are able to provide essential services and facilities in the long term.

While we understand that a rate rise is never welcome, we believe it is an important conversation we need to have with our community. We are also seeking your input on a proposal to apply to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) for a special variation.

Dungog Community Waste Grants

You are invited to attend any of the venues listed below where you will be given an opportunity to ask questions and have discussions regarding the Community Strategic Plan and the proposed special rates variation with Councillors and Council staff.

On Tuesday 13th February, Council and JR Richards were pleased to be able to provide St Joseph’s Primary school with playground litter bins, allowing the students to sort their recyclables from their waste. Food scraps from meal breaks will also be collected via their green classroom buckets and green bins and recycled in their new compost bins.

A new vegetable garden is proposed for later this year. Waste education officer Megan Griffiths is working closely with St Josephs and is available to assist all other schools to develop their waste management systems.

As part of the waste collection contract, Council’s contractor JR Richards provides waste education services to Dungog Shire. The education program is designed to assist the community in diverting waste from landfill and encouraging better recycling and resource recovery.

During the second half of 2017, Council announced a Community Grant Program aimed to encourage local community groups to develop waste initiatives and there have been several recipients of these grants.

Assets tour Councillors and Council staff completed their tour of the Shire on Saturday, looking at assets like bridges, roads, halls, playgrounds and parks. Staff spoke about issues that need addressing and decisions by Council and some up-coming works. Councillors also heard about wish-list items for improvements if we can secure funding.

Hunter Councils Conference and Strategic Planning Day Acting General Manager (GM), Shaun Chandler, and I attended the annual Hunter Councils Conference and Strategic Planning Session (part 2) last week. As a group, the Hunter Councils Joint Organisation is determining regional priorities for the next few years, and identifying ways that the Local Government Areas (LGAs) can collaborate for positive outcomes across the region.

Late last year Economic Development and Tourism Officer, Ivan Skaines, and I attended a workshop on developing a Regional Events Strategy. This concept is being further investigated by Hunter Councils. A coordinated approach to the growth of the tourism and events sector throughout the region will benefit all the Hunter LGAs, no matter what their economic profile. Dungog Shire will have a voice when it comes to any future strategies.

Advocacy, for issues like transport, health and education services and other regional priorities, were also discussed within the context of devising the strategic direction that Hunter Council Joint Organisation will follow.

I know it's hot and very dry, but there are still a lot of things that can be done for those who intend listing their Homes and Farms in Autumn, and start getting your property market ready, now. If its too hot to get out in the paddocks, you may consider getting your files in order to list.

PRE LIST CHECK LIST: Find relevant DA approvals for Dwellings, Pool, Septic System, Shedding. Very important to have the Occupation Certificate from Council Final Inspection once building has been completed. Council will have copies for you. You can go to Council and inspect your own Property’s file, and get copies of anything you may need. Just give Council prior notice so the File can be found in Archived files.

Building certificate: if Final Inspection wasn’t completed by your Builder, you can organise Council Building Inspection and get a compliant Building Certificate. Again now is the time to do this, prior to listing for sale. Stops issues later when you want a buyer to sign the Sale Contract.

Owner builder: find Insurance papers, make sure you have had Council sign off on any Building

works, do Final Inspections, make sure all documents are at hand.

Pest Inspection: have one completed and attend to anything needing to be done prior to listing. Don’t wait for a buyer to find issues that may cost you a sale. If necessary, fix it now.

Swimming Pool certification: Pools are now required to be Registered, and an Inspection done to obtain a Pool Compliance Certificate that will be attached to your Contract for Sale.

Gardens: Prune trees, mulch gardens after any rain to retain any moisture, spray weeds, think about presentation and photos.

Paint: is amazing, Paint can transform a property.

If too hot to paint outside, it’s a good time to paint inside. Think about exterior painting if needed.

Declutter: Inside out of the heat... clean out cupboards, throw out excess old toys, take clothes to recycle bin, sell unwanted furniture, it will open up your rooms and remember everything in your rooms will show on photos on the Internet, so its best to de clutter before Listing.

Making lazy meals more nutritious

1. Can you add vegetables?

Whether it’s cheese on toast or microwave lasagne, we’ve all had days where we are just too lazy to make something decent to eat. Lazy meals can be made significantly more nutritious by simply adding to what you already have.

Most meals lack vegetables and good fats, so let me show you how to rectify this and better balance your meals by asking yourself two simple questions:

Always add vegetables! We need a minimum five servings per day. Most Australians consume only half this amount, leaving giant holes in our body’s daily nutritional requirements. Vegetables provide a great source of fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (or ‘phytochemicals’ as us in the Natural Health Biz call them). Add whatever you have available. Try grating, steaming, roasting, blending them into dips and sauces (my favourite for getting vegetables into the littlies), or simply raw in a side salad.

Remember, colours = nutrition, so load up on as many different colours of vegetables as you can.

2. Can you add fat?

Fat is not something to be scared of, in fact, fat is extremely important to our health. I’m talking about ‘good fats’ which include raw nuts and seeds,

avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, whole eggs, and fatty fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, etc.). When eaten in appropriate quantities, these fats do not contribute to weight gain; sugar does.

Therapeutically they are antiinflammatories, brain and mood boosters, pain relievers, immune boosters, and are required for hormone health. Unhealthy fats from fried and processed foods, red meat, margarine, and ‘junk’ foods have the exact opposite effect.

Good fats are fairly heat sensitive (with the exception of olive oil, coconut oil, and fish), so the best way to utilise them is to add them after the cooking process to avoid unnecessary heat exposure. Try sprinkling whole or ground nuts and seeds over both sweet and savoury dishes, cooking and baking with coconut or olive oil instead of other vegetable oils, eating oily fish three times per week, swapping out sour cream and margarine for avocado, or adding egg to your meal.

Play around with different ideas and flavour combinations until you find what works for you. No matter how lazy the meal, even adding just one element of extra nutrition is doing your body a great service.

A big thank you to all the ladies who helped out on the day.

Last year we applied for a grant through the Community Building Partnership programme and were successful to the tune of $5,000. This money will enable us to get our building painted - I have it on good authority the building was last painted 24 years ago!

Our Craft Workshop held on Saturday, February 10 was well attended and enjoyed by young and old. Participants enjoyed a morning tea of scones, jam and cream. By far the most popular Planning is well underway for the activities were card making and glass Gresford Show. This is a detective story with a difference, and is the first in a series about investigator Hermes Diaktoros, a ‘fat man’ with an obsessive regard for his white tennis shoes. Gresford farewells a dedicated lady I would like to thank the Collison Family for the honour and privilege to convey the life journey of Freda May Collison and share with you her remarkable achievements throughout her life.

café. Freda stayed at home helping her parents run the family businesses until the 1st July, 1946 when the postmaster general from Sydney, appointed her as postmistress at the Cross Roads Post Office Gresford until 1961.

On the 6th April 1925, Alfred and Edith Watson of Martins Creek, celebrated Freda’s birth which was at Clarine Private Hospital, West Maitland. Freda had one sister, Margaret, who later became Mrs Margaret Horn.

It was during this period, on the 16th April 1949 that Raymond Cantwell Collison and Freda married at St Anne’s Church of England. They constructed a family home at 17 Church Street, Gresford and after their marriage moved into that residence.

From numerous discussions I had with Freda over many years, Her childhood was quite unremarkable. The First World War had ceased only 6 years prior to Freda’s Birth and unfortunately the Nation would be gripped by a period of Depression during her early years.

Twelve months after moving into their new home Freda and Ray welcomed their eldest son John into the world in 1950, followed by Cynthia in 1952, Graham in 1953, Paul in 1959 and Rosemary in 1961.

In 1962 Ray and Freda purchased a 150 acre property on Singleton Road, naming it “Wambool”. Tragically Freda lost her beloved Husband Ray who passed on 19th February 1986 aged 59 and subsequently the family farm which had operated as a dairy converted to a beef producing enterprise. Wambool remained Freda’s home for 56 years.

Freda explained to me that until she attended Gresford Public School at the age of seven, her days consisted of working around the home, doing chores for her Mother, day visits to see relatives and naturally Sunday School at St. Anne’s Anglican Church at Gresford.

Freda was tireless in her efforts to achieve the highest standards and she carried out the full range of her undertakings and activities in the most exemplary manner. Her distinguished service to not only the Gresford Community, the State of NSW And a grateful Nation is indeed noteworthy.

From 1940 to 1946 and then from 1992 for a twenty six year period, Freda was a Member of the Gresford Country Women’s Association. Her initial period was during the Second World War, where she and others contributed greatly to the War effort making and compiling care packages for troops. Freda was a fierce advocate to improve conditions for country women and children, helping our local community by creating a network of support within our Community.

Freda was an extremely active parishioner at St. Anne’s Anglican Church, Gresford.

She was a member of the Choir from the age of 14 and remained so until 2010. For many years she served on the Parochial Council and Vestry, and over so many years volunteered scripture readings at Sunday services. Freda also undertook care of linen and the roster of cleaning the church. During her younger years she also attended Sunday school and then years later became the Sunday School Teacher.

Freda was also a member St. Anne’s Women’s Guild and was Treasurer from 1975 to 2010. The Guild supports St. Anne’s Anglican Church and they have been involved with many projects, however the most notable was the refurbishment of the Pipe Organ at St. Anne’s. The Guild fund raised from 1997 to 2002 raising $34,000 to have major restoration works undertaken. Whilst the Guides no longer operate in Gresford, The Terese Doyle Hall is now used as the Gresford Historical Society Museum of which Freda was a Foundation member and patron before her passing.

Freda became a member of the Newcastle Diocese Mother’s Union of Australia in 1974. The Mother’s Union is a worldwide prayer group, sharing Christs love by encouraging, strengthening and supporting marriage and family life.

Freda was a pivotal player in establishing the Gresford Branch of the Mother’s Union Group which celebrated their 21st year celebrations on 2nd July, 1995.

Finally in summation, to encapsulate Freda’s incredible journey her epitaph will read Her Distinguished Service to our Community has not only acquired her the Respect of her Peers, but also all who have had the opportunity to observe from afar.

Freda was held in reverence by Dungog Shire Communities for her unfailing efforts, devotion, and care that she afforded one and all. She will be sadly missed, but her legacies are there for the benefit of all. Her life’s work has been in the finest traditions and beliefs as passed on by our forebears. She toiled hard for our community and now deserves her rest. We take comfort in the knowledge that Freda Is now in the company of her beloved Husband Raymond and the Almighty. May she rest in peace and be forever in our hearts.

Attributes recorded during the surveys include presence or absence, size, frequency and age of faecal pellets. These factors help to paint a picture of which areas koalas are using, which trees and what type they are using and the rough age of animals. There’s a bit more science behind it but that’s generally how it’s done. With a bit of luck we might still see a live koala.

Local historical society update

Monday 12 February was to see our first general meeting for 2018 held within our local pioneering museum here in East Gresford. President George Sales had with him his newly gained recognition award for his contribution to our local community.

George was one of four local recipients to receive quite an eyecatching and well-deserved award.

Many thanks to members of the Gresford District Community Group who have a commitment to bettering our township and organising diverse events days.

President Mr Graham Murphy presented new signage to help better advertise our Museum within recent months.

As with other years, the Gresford District Historical Society has projects the society wishes to achieve throughout 2018. Some of these projects include: interviewing local identities who have their own knowledge of local history of our area throughout time; gathering documented information and photos is an important aspect of this; sorting out and filing information

this includes on a technical level.

The GDHSI wishes to have eventful days throughout the year to help bring people (especially younger people) to a better understanding of what we are all about. This includes: the involvement of displays; supporting the costs of running a museum; printing literature etc.

It was re-discussed at our recent GDHSI meeting that there is a real need for obtaining new members.

We also need to younger blood to assist with keeping our local historical society operating and to help with special events days. We have a friendly group of members and new faces would be most welcome. A little of your time would be of the greatest help.

The upcoming Gresford Agricultural Show will see members of our local historical society in the main pavilion. We will have artefacts relating to the old school days on display in the glass showcase. This year Gresford Public School will be celebrating 150 years of Education.
