SOME THINGS JUST DON'T CHANGE Whilst doing some family history research I came across an article with the following extract from the Newcastle Chronicle in 1871 that expressed the frustration of locals.

“They have learned by bitter experience that parliament, which should have handled the revenue of the colony for the general good, has, by its corruption, come to look upon a grant f or this or that purpose as a special favour only to be conferred on special consideration … No matter how badly this road might want mending, that river require bridging, or the country, generally, require opening up, nothing was done.”

Still seems relevant in our 2021.

Lost Paterson and Allyn Valleys

Gresford District Exhibits at the Maitland Show – March 1923 The Maitland Weekly Mercury Sat 10 Mar 1923 Page 4 "The pavilions have always been a strong point at Maitland Shows, and this year is no exception. There are many good displays in each, but there were few that came in for more admiration than the district exhibits. It is one of the innovations that has proved a success.

There are three collections – Oakhampton, Aberglasslyn and Rosebrook District Agricultural Bureau, Paterson and Allyn Rivers District Bureau and Tuggerah District. In a good season it would be hard to stage better collections. The farm and garden produce and fruit were in great variety.

The exhibit of the Paterson and Allyn Rivers included amongst its special features an interesting collection of insects by Mr. John Hopson, of Eccleston; photos of Eccleston and others places on the way to the Barrington Tops, taken by Mr. Marceau; exhibits of butter and cream by the Gresford branch of the Bowthorne Butter

The Gresford Butter Factory’s exhibit gave some figures relating to the manufacture of butter. It was stated that 22 1-3lbs of milk, at 4. per cent., made 1lb butter, also 2lbs of cream at 41 per cent.

An interesting item was a leaf of a prickly pear which had lain on a board under a sheet of glass for four years. It was still green and had thrown out a number of spindly shoots. Exhibits of timber, minerals, hams and bacon were also expected but did not arrive.

The background of the exhibit was artistically set out in maize, grasses, wool and greenery."

And the Gresford and District Historical Society now has for sale for $20 the recently published "Seven Little Churches of the Paterson Valley" (which celebrates 175 years since the creation of the Anglican Parish of Gresford Paterson). The book was written by David Brouwer and published

by Paterson Historical Society at the suggestion of the Parish and we thank the Paterson Historical Society for their generosity in being able to sell the book.

And finally, the July meeting of the GDHS will be held Saturday 10 July (the second Saturday), commencing at 6pm at the home of Delma Lawrence, 72 Park St, East Gresford and new members are always welcome. The Museum is open the first and second Sundays of each month from 10am to 2pm.

GVFC’s Go Pink! Day – It was a huge success!

A hugely successful Go Pink! fundraising event on June 5 has seen Gresford Vacy Football Club raise an incredible $13,729 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Scorpions players, officials and spectators came together in a united show of pink to support the Foundation which continues to conduct game-changing research in its quest to eliminate deaths to breast cancer by 2030.

Gresford Sporting Complex was a sea of pink on the day with every single Scorpions player taking to the field in pink socks. Supporters also wore pink headbands, had their hair sprayed pink and bought hundreds of pink sweets from the cake stall.

“The support this fundraiser received was just unbelievable,” the club’s Go Pink! coordinator Julie Hartigan said.

“We set a fundraising target of $10,000 and with such amazing support from sponsors, players and the wider community we absolutely smashed it.”

Club president Jim Doyle said the day united a community in a way he had

never seen before. “Without a doubt, this was one of the best days we have ever hosted,” he said. “I’m not talking about soccer either; I’m talking about the way this community came together to make a difference.”

The club thanked major sponsors Hawks Transport and One Agency Sharon Hill for their generous contributions as well as all raffle prize donors and every single person who played a part in making the Go Pink! day such a success.

Food chat with Fiona...

For years I have travelled a lot so eating local was a matter of seeing who’s home I got invited into or trying all the local street food, tummy on legs I collect recipes as I go.

Now I am back in rural Australia I realise I am still doing the same thing. My garden is growing with many plants and herbs given by friends and street food is abundant on the citrus trees along the roadside.They glow and it is so hard to go past.

Of course, there is marmalade. I have a real liking for kaffir lime at the moment, but have you thought of preserved lemon? As easy as cutting a lemon into almost 4 quarters and putting a teaspoon of salt inside then letting it sit a month. A feature of Moroccan cuisine – you use the skin and throw the insides.

It can be used in so many ways. Quintessentially a tagine, you can also use a fine dice dropped into a salad, sauce or yoghurt giving little pops of lemony goodness, well worth experimenting with. The preserved lemons also can be the basis of a tangy Indian pickle.

Another favourite is mandarin skins. Dry them and grind to a powder – such a flavour boost in cakes and puddings or part of a Japanese 7 Spice sprinkle called Shichimi Togarashi traditionally used with noodles The flavour pop is something you will want to spread over rice, BBQ chicken and many other things. Addictive!

CWA News What a great day it was – CWA Book and Bake sale at the Bi-Election on Saturday 22 May at the School of Arts.

Crisp sunny morning, lots of volunteers handing out “how to vote” papers had their early morning sugar fix, cup cakes, scones, honey crackles and then the voters purchased date loaves, lemon coconut cakes, chocolate cakes, biscuits, scones and slices. Homemade, jams , pickles and chutneys. Our first opportunity to fund raise in over a year.. we ran out. A big thanks to the Historical Society who invited us to join them.

by Anita Brookner This is a rather absorbing novel, considering that it is about an inhibited woman, who sees her life as boring. Frances works in the reference library of a medical research institute and falls in love with the lifestyle of a couple of ‘beautiful people’ – Nick and his wife Alix. Frances has been left well off by her parents, and it becomes clear that Nick and Alix are happy to exploit her. She is so pleased to be included in their social group that she is always willing to pick up the bill when they dine in their local restaurant, which happens most nights.

Frances has some self-knowledge, and is an aspiring writer, but has a blind spot about her favourite couple. When they draw James into their circle, Frances becomes involved with him, but she doesn’t stand a chance in the face of Alix’s manipulative powers. Brookner illuminates the lives of the characters will telling detail. There are some very appealing people in Frances’ broader circle, and even minor characters are described with graphic touches, but it is in the creation of Nick and Alix that she excels. Their attractiveness to Frances is clear, but their hollowness comes through to the reader at the same time.

Paterson Cracker Night and Winter Festival.

Hosted by The Paterson Rotary Club, the inaugural Paterson Cracker Night was held in Tucker Park on the 5 June.

Despite cold conditions, a huge crowd (estimated around 4,000) enjoyed a wonderful night of family fun and community spirit, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.

The crowd was entertained by a great live band, ‘The Outback Hippies’ with many in the crowd dancing in the mosh pit and on stage. Other fun activities included a jumping castle, and giant slide, mini golf, a fun photo booth, face painting and lucky dip. The various activities were run by local school P&Cs who were able to raise much needed funds for their schools.

Many families enjoyed a picnic while others supported the various food and coffee caterers, who were kept very busy.

All in all the night was heralded as a huge success and will become an annual event.

The Paterson Rotary Club, ably led by new President Nigel Pereira, are to be congratulated on organizing such a successful community event. Funds raised on the night will go back to the local community.

DUNGOG SHIRE WITH A GRESFORD FOCUS COUNCIL ELECTIONS – CALLING ALL RESIDENTS OF C WARD Residents of C Ward are about to lose 2 councillors

who have represented them passionately and faithfully for many years. Neither Cr Glenn Wall nor Cr Robert Booth will be standing for re-election in the local government elections to be held on 4 September 2021. Only 2 months away. Cr Kate Murphy will not be throwing her hat in the ring again either, due to other commitments.

The electors of C Ward, which includes Gresford and surrounding areas, need to find and elect councillors to replace them. C Ward covers by far the largest geographic area in the Shire, including the Paterson and Allyn Valleys, and also the areas of Chichester, Salisbury and part of Fosterton.

This election will be different, as a result of the referendum held at the last local government elections in 2017. Instead of three councillors for each ward, there will only be two.

The mayor will be elected by all electors across the shire, rather than being chosen by the councillors.

The strength of your council depends on having strong and committed councillors elected to represent you. Councillors who listen to your concerns and put in the significant time and effort needed to achieve the best possible outcomes in all the circumstances.

Nominations open on 26 July and close on 4 August.

Gresford News Quiz works program, which from July will include the commencement of the upgrade of all street lighting across the shire to more efficient and less costly LED lighting. The work will be carried out

by Essential Energy and will take several months.

Thanks to grant funding of $19,870, Council has been able to undertake salvinia management in Paterson River, including 37ha of Riparian zone.

On the roads and bridges front, the new Summerhill and Coulston Bridges have been completed and work has started on the Bingleburra and Allyn River Road intersection.

Improvements to James Road and Massey Creek Road at Eccleston have been carried out.

MARTINS CREEK QUARRY PROJECT The Martins Creek Quarry Project has lodged an amendment to its State Significant Development (SSD) Application. The proposal involves the extraction of 1.5 million tonnes of material per annum, comprising of andesite hard rock, expansion into new extraction areas and the consolidation of existing operations and approvals.

The Council is urgently seeking an extension of time until 31 July 2021 to allow the Council to provide a quality and informed submission to the amended proposal on all issues in line with community expectations. This is particularly important given council is not the consent authority in this instance and making a submission to DPIE will be the council’s only opportunity to have input into the SSD process.

Gresford and District Community Group July News Meet the Candidates The Gresford and District Community Group hosted the first of many ‘Meet the Candidates’ open event in the week prior to the Upper Hunter By-Election which saw a great turn-out by both candidates and members of the local community.

What did you do when you were a kid? station wagon and transported to a processing plant next to the Butter Factory at Mitchells Island, near Taree.

Growing up (1962 approx.) part of my life was on a 250 acre dairy farm at Ducks Ridge Road, Comboyne. A plateau at an elevation of 750 metres, previously covered by subtropical rain forest, and has an annual average rainfall of approx. 1800 mm.

I believe the Corkwood was dried and then sent to Germany, where numerous drugs were extracted from the product.

Bush medicine was also used by Aboriginal people, the leaves contained Alkaloids, one of these is Hyoscine (scopolamine) used for treating motion sickness.

To help subsidise our income I would help cut Corkwood with my mother (that was how she got her spending money).

Corkwood trees would grow to approx. 4 metres and we would cut the branches off the tree and strip the tips which were a lush green with a bluish tinge, onto a tarp and then bag the leaf into corn bags, keeping the leaves moist with cold water, as we were paid by weight, very important.
