Heads up at the Bowlo Christmas and New Year festivities are memories now as we venture into a new and exciting year. The following ‘ancient history’ but well worth recording though: On Sunday 25 November Miller Park hosted the ‘Travelling Coots Four Way Challenge’ between Miller Park, Abermain, Bellbird Park and Gresford. A keenly fought event in its own right it is also a pennant warmup. Unfortunately the Gresford team left it’s A game somewhere along the Glendonbrook Road while Miller Park produced skillful home ground play to win. Jamie Atkins in the photo was one of the few shining lights for Gresford on the day. Thank you Miller Park for hosting an excellent event. Our season closed on 9th December with the ‘Gala Dinner and Presentation Night’. There were speeches, trophies and food galore. Formal proceedings culminated in the chocolate raffle where it seemed if you had a ticket you got a piece of chocolate heaven. Congratulations to the champions and their effort is a signal for the rest of us to try harder and maybe practice a bit! Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the evening a great success.

Pamela worked very hard to sell the unique nature of our property. Our property is a niche conservation property, Pamela demonstrated excellent market knowledge judging by the potential buyers who came for inspections. She communicated clearly and was quick to respond to questions. She was also able to communicate the unique selling points of our property with a deep understanding of the landscape and experience of living on a mountain! Pamela balanced a genuine love of rural property and professional approach to buyers and was very supportive personally and enthusiastically committed to the sale. We are very grateful to Pamela and recommend her highly. Review submitted by the Vendor on 05 Dec 2023 VENDOR

"Vacy to Gresford – People and Places" and colonial born who worked on the estates or leased parts of them as tenant farmers. This includes the wave of German immigrants in the 1840s and 1850s.

Paterson Historical Society is pleased to announce the launch of a new book titled "Vacy to Gresford – People and Places" on Sun 17 March 2024 in the Vacy School of Arts beginning at 2pm. Afternoon tea will be served at the conclusion of the launch.

"Vacy to Gresford" shows how the subdivision of many of the large estates from the late 1800s replaced a mosaic of tenanted farms with a patchwork of small, privately owned farms, many of which became dairy farms. The book also explains the formation and history of the villages of Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford.

The book was written by Society member and long-time historian Dr Brian Walsh. It covers the people and places along the Paterson and Allyn Rivers between Vacy and Gresford. The book reveals how a whole new European Society emerged along the two rivers from the 1820s, albeit at the expense of the dispossession of Aboriginal people. The immigrants lured by grants of riverside land were remarkably diverse in terms of age, wealth, nationality and life experience. Welshman Charles Boydell was barely old enough to shave when he was granted "Camyr Allyn". In contrast, Jamaican plantation owner and slave master Francis Blower Gibbes had fought in the Battle of Trafalgar two decades before he was granted "Norwood". Constantine Crichton who purchased "Wallah" near Gresford was born in St Petersburg, Russia where his father was personal physician to the Tsar. Irish shepherd-boy Edward Kealy was granted

President of Paterson Historical Society, Dr Cameron Archer AM, said "Brian's book tells a story of heartbreak for some, prosperity for others but for most a story of toil, thrift and resilience. The families of those whose forebears came with nothing but the shirts on their backs are now the fabric of a community that respects and values its history and heritage. This book will give them a greater understanding of how their families lived in the Valley." a mere 200 acres that he named "Summer Hill". The book covers far more than the land owners. It also provides information on the convicts, emancipists, free immigrants

The 190 page book includes many maps and images, a detailed index and list of references. The Society invites all those interested to attend the launch. Cameron Archer AM, Paterson Historical Society President

Gresford Landcare

GVFC Registration Open

Gresford Landcare met at the Gresford Arboretum for the last Landcare meeting of the year. Approximately 50 people met and enjoyed the meeting in the shade of the gazebo after a hot day.

Kick-off for the 2024 soccer season is a few months away but club committee members are already in action behind the scenes: Registration details are finalised, sponsors are being secured, the new playing kit is in the design phase and new club merch is in production.

Cameron Archer from Dungog Tourism spoke about the contribution that Landcarers make to regional tourism. He referred to the Council’s recently published Open Space and Recreation Plan, reminding us all of the delights that the Dungog Council area has to offer to tourists.

Earlybird registration fees are again unchanged - Miniroos (ages 5-7) $100, Miniroos (ages 8-11) $120, Interdistrict players (ages 12-18) $170 and seniors $250. Active Kids Vouchers will also be accepted. Players can sign up at www. playfootball.com.au

Julia thanked all those who have contributed to the success of the local Landcare group this year after which those assembled enjoyed a dinner of warm glazed ham, salads and bread rolls.

The low registration fees are due to the generous support of club sponsors. Microprose is back on board as the major sponsor and the support of OneAgency Sharon Hill will ensure our goalkeepers stand out in their orange jerseys.

Rod Kater thanked Julia Wokes for her ongoing efforts as President of the group which under her guidance, has grown into a larger, more involved and successful group, visiting many properties throughout the shire providing an educational and interesting programme for members.

Details of all club sponsors will be released in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, any businesses keen to throw their support behind the club as a sponsor can contact club president Jim Doyle on 0407 307 800, committee member Julie Hartigan on 0421 023 934 or email gresfordvacyfc.com

any preservation of koala habitats will help the flying foxes. As Peggy said improvement “will take time – but we have time.”

The ninety or so people who accepted the invitation to “Meet our Amazing Bats” at the James Theatre in November were certainly not disappointed. Between them, Dr Peggy Eby, Ph.D. student Amy Rowles and local ecologist and consultant Bill Dowling, gave a detailed overview of the bat story, particularly for the bats in our local area. Dr Peggy Eby explained that there are two species of flying foxes in our area - the commonly seen Grey-headed Flying-fox and the highly nomadic Little Red Flying-fox. She described the life cycle and roosting and they much prefer to feed on our habits of the Grey-headed Flying-fox and native vegetation. Ph.D. student Amy Rowles is working on the seasonal distribution of microbats at warm and cool times in our forests. There are up to 65 different species of insectivorous bats in Australia and we have a good share in the Dungog Shire, including 2 species of Long- eared-bats, 2 species of Wattled Bats, as well as Sheathtail-bats, 3 species of Freetail-bats, Broad-nosed Bats, 5 species of cave bats, as well as fishing bats and spider eating bats (both appropriately named!). Amy explained that microbats range in weight from 2.3 to 60 grams and some can live to be up to 30 years of age. Researchers use metal bands and microchips to label individual bats. Amy is studying the ratio of light and heavy isotopes of carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen and has shown that a local species move to lower elevations for breeding. Bill Dowling then gave us detailed information about the size and

distribution of Grey-headed Flying-foxes in Dungog Shire and adjacent areas. There are 9 camps in the Shire, including those at Mount Richardson, Gresford and Monkerai, and 9 more close to the shire’s boundary. There are up to 20,000 bats at the Monkerai camp and a similar number has been recorded at Tocal. They follow the spotted gum flowering and can cover enormous distances. For example one flew from Bairnesdale in Victoria to Gresford and then on to Barrington Tops. Little Red Flying-foxes also occur in our area and are highly mobile. In two days 20,000 from Tocal arrived at Susan Island at Grafton. They can take over Grey-headed Flying-fox camps like the one at Singleton where they caused a lot of damage to the trees. Camps near urban development are unpopular and councils have tried various ways of controlling them. When the trees were lopped as a control method in Lorn the bats moved on to near the Courthouse at Tenambit. About three and a half to four thousand have moved back to Regent Street, Maitland and the question is “Where to next?” For many years there was a camp of about 20,000 at Webber's Creek Road in Paterson but

This led to a discussion about problems caused by bats in urban areas – particularly disease. There are only two viruses in Flying-fox populations that have caused concern – Australian bat lyssavirus and Hendra virus.

when water became scarce they moved on to Tocal. They follow the flowering of the spotted gum and, with mass flowering, numbers can reach 50,000. So mobility is sometimes due to human interference and sometimes to natural variations in conditions. The session concluded with questions from the audience. The first question was about the decline in Flying-foxes in the Mount Richardson area. There was speculation about the fact that they often roost near flowing water and sometimes near schools – with sounds similar to bat colonies. The observation was also made

Australian bat lyssavirus is only spread by bites and scratches. There is an effective vaccine available and people should avoid handling any bats if they are not vaccinated. Only three cases of human infection with Australian bat lyssavirus have been recorded in Australia, all in Queensland. It is thought that Hendra virus is spread from bat urine on horse food. Humans can not be infected with Hendra virus directly from bats. Humans have only been infected following high level exposures to body fluids of an infected horse. A vaccine for horses is available and is strongly encouraged as the most effective way to reduce the risk of exposure to Hendra virus. To view a recording of this event visit: www.pawsciencehub.com

Wifedom – Anna Funder Although this book is not on the shelves of the CWA library, it has recently been acquired by Maitland library, and is well worth reading. George Orwell looms large in literary history, with his great achievements of 1984 and Animal Farm, which spelled out the tyrannies of totalitarianism. His name is a byword for strong prose and understanding of the oppressed. Writing of his experiences of the Spanish Civil War and the life of the working class made him a champion of the common man, but not, ironically, of the common woman. Anna Funder has used her own awareness of the power of patriarchy to look behind the veil of Orwell’s life to reveal the intelligent and talented woman who sustained and supported him financially as he wrote his masterpieces, and was all but erased by both Orwell and his biographers. Eileen O’Shaugnessy played a more significant operative role in the Spanish war than her husband, as she worked in the central office of his socialist army, while he spent a great deal of time in the trenches of a war in the doldrums. While organising their supply lines of food, medicines, clothing and communications she typed up the manuscripts Orwell sent from the trenches, as well as turning news bulletins into supportive propaganda. When she and the rest of their organisation became the targets of a suspicious Stalin, who saw them as fascists, she was instrumental in getting as many as possible out of the country. However, in his writing about the war, Homage to Catalonia, he barely acknowledged that she was in Spain. Funder recounts chilling incidents of infidelity and neglect on his part towards Eileen, which make you reassess the worth of the man himself. . All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder. Also have a look in the street library.
