Lost Paterson and Allyn Valleys
Official opening of the Summer Hill Bridge, Paterson River Recognising the 91 years of service provided by the wooden Bruxner Bridge over the Paterson River at Summer Hill.
The Maitland Daily Mercury Sat 5 Apr 1930. Page 2 There was a large assemblage at the recently constructed bridge over the Paterson River, at Summer Hill this afternoon, when the official opening was performed by Hon. Walter Bennett, M.L.A. Councillor E. Bowden, President of Bolwarra Shire Council presided over the gathering. The bridge is built square to the centre line of the road and consists of three spans, two of thirty feet and one centre span of thirty-five feet, measured centre to centre of piers and abutments. The roadway is 16 feet 6 inches in the clear between kerb logs. Constructed upon concrete piers, the flooring consists of four inch sawn planks running full length of the bridge, securely fastened by 3-8 inch square spikes to the girders, which, in the outer are 12 inches by 14 inches by 35 feet. was carried out to the satisfaction of the shire engineer, Mr. Lindsay, is high class and reflects credit upon all who were in any way responsible for the erection of the bridge. The erection of the bridge has been the subject of much agitation for the past 40 years, as the river at this spot was rendered impassable after heavy rain, and travellers were obliged to make a
long detour. It will be of undoubted benefit to the residents on either side of the river, ensuring as it does, communication with the town, and should also be a great convenience to those desiring to travel stock to the Maitland Saleyards. Paterson Allyn Garden Group The Paterson Allyn Garden Group has had a prominent and successful year under the umbrella of Garden Clubs Australia (GCA). Janie Chandler has been elected onto the board of GCA, Lisa Connors from Dungog has received national recognition in the annual photographic competition and Fiona Lambell from Vacy has had her photographic work chosen for the front page of a national photographic booklet.

GCA is a very large organization with almost 800 affiliated gardening groups throughout Australia and Norfolk Island. Their primary object is to extend the culture and knowledge of gardening into the wider community for the benefit of all citizens and to support charities with financial assistance and or gardening support. PAGG is currently raising funds for the Dungog Palliative Care Unit. GCA are currently involved with Weedscan Project, conducted by the Centre of Invasive Species Solutions and the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The project aims to identify all weeds in Australia via an online app and this in turn will be a fit for purpose community weed management tool.

Scorpions 10 year presentation
As end-of-season presentations get under way, five junior Scorpions have been honoured for their long-term commitment to Gresford Vacy Football Club. Under-15s players River Rowles, Lochlan Fitzpatrick and Sam Hartigan and All-Age Men players Tom Doyle and Toby Carter have each notched up 10 playing years with the Scorpions. In a new club tradition, president Jim Doyle presented the players with commemorative jackets that acknowledge their 10-year playing careers. “It is so great for the whole club to see this commitment from our juniors,” Doyle said. “These five players represent what this club is all about. They might not know it, but they have become role models for our younger players.” Doyle praised the teenagers for their commitment to the club on and off the field. “Four of these guys are also accredited referees and they give back to the club every Saturday by leading our junior games,” he said. “Hopefully our younger players will see these guys proudly wearing their jackets
and they’ll also want to reach 10 years – or more – with the Scorpions. Ideally, they’ll be inspired to be Scorps for life.”

On the Shelves... by Glenda Smith Sweet Tooth
by Ian McEwen This is an interesting novel in terms of both construction and content. The main character, Serena Frome, is a beautiful but naïve young woman from a privileged background, who is recruited for the Secret Service. She finds the job very dull, partly because as a woman she is expected to do only clerical hack work, (and once even cleaning work in a very dirty ‘safe house’) but she is eventually given a special assignment to liaise with a writer the Service hopes will promote their point of view. McEwen uses the Cold War and the IRA bombings as a background, but his focus is more on the mechanics of propaganda. The Secret Service does not come off as a highminded organisation. In fact it is undermined in this novel by pettiness and jealousy, which may reflect its true nature as a human institution – very distant from the glamour of a James Bondian world. Serena is manipulated by several men, including the writer she is supposed to be manipulating. She, like us, is ultimately a Reader. The intrigue of the novel comes from her sense of ominousness, and a surprising denouement which is as much about writing as plot development. All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder. Also have a look in the street library.

The Sculpture on the Farm committee was thrilled to donate the two Sculpture on the Farm 2021 Acquisitive Prize-winning sculptures. Kelpie by Jimmy Rix, will be situated outside the Visitors Information Centre, while Sowelu Two by Jen Mallinson will be at the Dungog Common. This brings to six the number of sculptures donated: A Thought is a Ripple by Gavin Vitullo, is in Common Creek (opposite Gate 4), Nothin’ But Sky by Braddon Snape 2018 at Lions Park and Theatre of the Shadow by Peter Tilley, the 2019 Acquisitive Prize, will be placed in the updated library.

The following information has been provided regarding Dungog Shire Council’s Christmas & New Year operating arrangements:
Dungog’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) will close at 12.30pm on Friday 24 December 2021 and will reopen again on Monday 27 December 2021. It will also be closed on New Year’s Day, Saturday 1 January 2022.

This decision comes following Maitland City Council’s recent construction of an impressive and modern Animal Management Facility at Tenambit, of which Dungog Shire has been invited to consider as its pound on a contract basis. The facility is operated by animal welfare organisation, Central Coast Animal Care.
The SOE measures and reports on the progress of environmental goals in council’s Community Strategic Plan and represents a comprehensive commentary of the state of the environment in Dungog Shire that will provide an extremely useful reference document for many years to come.
