Swagbot is coming to Future Paddock 'Swagbot' as seen on ABC-TV's Catalyst program will be one of the star performers at the Future Paddock Field Day on Sunday 18 August 10am-4pm at Allynbrook. The University of Sydney’s Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) team will demonstrate Swagbot in action, including things it does well and things that are still works-in-progress, and answer questions about the future of farming. Team leader Professor Salah Sukkarieh will be one of the presenters.

Future Paddock, a part of the Paterson Allyn Williams Festival of Science, will also feature Drones from Sphere Drones, one of Australia’s leading drone solution providers, as well as sessions on regenerative agriculture and ecological restoration.

Voting is now open until 15 August for the NSW Government’s My Community Grants Projects. There are 4 very worthy grant applications in from Dungog Shire.

Glenn’s book introduces dozens of new words and ideas that open up our understanding of the world we live in.

A new word can help us recognise a challenge, shape a debate, understand ourselves and the world. At a time when many people, especially the young, are feeling loss and despair about the future of the planet, Glenn’s work will help us understand our feelings about the world and provides a guide to find a way forward.

Being a volunteer member of the Gresford Fire Brigade offers the opportunity to learn new and valuable skills that will not only assist you in your voluntary role; but in day to day life and even your workplace. It also provides an opportunity to meet people you wouldn't normally meet and it’s also about being part of a wonderful tradition and an organisation with a very proud history.

Jolliffe Cemetery needs your help In 2017 the Gresford Historical Society had an excursion to the Upper Paterson River to investigate the possibility of putting a fence around the old Jolliffe cemetery on Boonabilla Creek. It was George Jolliffe's wish that it be fenced before he passed away. It had a fence many years ago but time and white ants had taken their toll.

It was decided that the Historical Society, in conjunction with some family descendants, would apply for a grant to do the fence. To date we have applied for two grants but neither have amounted to anything.

So far there has been about $2,600 donated by family and community members. We are approximately $1,600 short of money to start and complete the project. The Society hopes that there maybe still some family and community members who wish to donate towards this historical project and get it completed.

Sculpture on the Farm Prepares for its Second Exhibition It’s all systems go at Fosterton, as the Sculpture on the Farm committee gears up for their second exhibition.

Wallarobba Hall is the site of an adorable sausage dog entitled “Molly and Rex” – a tribute to the annual Dachshund race held there on the Festival weekend each year.

Following success beyond their wildest expectations in 2018, the committee aims to equal if not surpass that success in this its second year.

Di Thornton-Smith of Gresford has installed her twin “Seedpods” at the entry to her property, whilst historic “Duninald” at Paterson displays “The Leaf” in its heritage garden setting.

For those who missed out on last year’s exhibition, make sure you do not miss this one. For those who came, this year’s exhibition will include a whole range of new and eye-catching works. Do not think that it will be the same as last year.

There are many exciting surprises in store for this year’s visitors.

For chairman, Philippa Graham, the installation of last year’s winning work “Nothin’ But Sky” on Hollywood Hill, is only the most publicly visible part of last year’s successful exhibition.

Our Gardens | a series on locals & gardening

‘Riverglen’ 18 months in which the river was always fresh (brown). We then decided to install a 10 metre Compass Pool that we enjoy immensely after working in the yard.

The gardens have mainly been built by us however some of the older trees were planted by previous owners. From the river bank garden you can reach the river taking care as you wander along the banks which over time we have cleared of giant reed, lantana, cestrum, privet and many vines that choke the growth of trees. We have planted approximately 2,000 native tube-stocks, purchased from Riverdene Nursery at East Gresford. These plants are all native to the area, many of them fruit bearing which attract many species of birds, butterflies and bees.

Graeme Walmsley and Maree Monk moved to Allynbrook some 16 years ago.

The land in total is 18 acres. We set about building a new house and a large steel shed. We have a 120,000 litre water tank to serve the house and a 100,000 litre tank to serve the cattle troughs and all of the gardens. We have installed approximately 3 kilometres of blue-line water pipe underground at a depth of

600 millimetres. We installed large tanks so that we could withstand most droughts, along with the property having a 12 mega litre water license is helpful if the river is still flowing.

Guest speaker Terry Gibbons who spent a year with the New Zealand police force. After the civil war between PNG and Bougainville there were 14 attempts at a peace deal. NZ brokered a deal among all factions in 1998. Since then NZ has been active in providing ongoing support in a number of areas for Bougainville’s future. Law and justice was essential in ensuring a peaceful environment. I was part of that.

Council is a great supporter of events in our Shire and we understand the importance of these events for our community and businesses. One key way we support not-for-profit community events, is by not charging fees for the processing of development applications (DAs) for these activities. However, this processing can take considerable time, so please apply as early as practicable to ensure there is time to get approval well before the event date. Having development approval helps safeguard your event in the case of mishap so it is definitely in your interest to have this properly in place.

1 July 2019 Extraordinary Meeting of Council Council held an Extra Ordinary meeting last week to resolve on the 2019-2020 setting of rates & charges as well as on the Operational Plan and Budget. Council resolved to amend the exhibited Operational Plan to include a need to report to Council any development applications that take more than 60 days to process, with an explanatory note as to the cause of the delay. Development applications (DAs) can be quite complex and Council recommends a pre-DA meeting with Council officers prior to lodging a DA. While this involves a small cost, to recover costs to Council, the saving of time and effort can be substantial.

Council also resolved on a staged program to permanently re-open the Williams River Holiday Park. The 63 sites that have been operating in the interim, and meet Council’s legislative requirements, are to remain open. Council will install further fire hydrants to the river side of the park, which will then allow for self-contained dwellings that have the capability to collect and dispose of black and grey water in an environmentally responsible manner to use this area of the Park. This will bring up the number of sites at the park to 100. Council has also resolved to apply for an approval for primitive camping at Wharf Reserve and make appropriate arrangements for event camping during events such as the Clarence Town Hoe Down.

The Williams River Holiday Park is currently under the management of Council, with the current interim managers being employed directly by Council. Once the Park is fully reopened and the upgrade completed, Council will call for an expression of interest or tender for a contract manager to take over.

Gresford Vacy Football Club

Celebrating Female Football Week On the 25th June the club had a combined training night at Gresford with what felt like 100 players. Holly Ayton from Northern NSW football who has recently been overseas supporting the young Matilda squad attended our session to work with our junior scorpion kids, impart some great advice and tips working with our coaches whilst celebrating Female Football Week.

It was an excellent night for all having SunScorp stadium full of teams running their drills, the BBQ was in overdrive and the welcomed help of an experienced and knowledgeable footballer like Holly was superb. Smiles and fun was had by all for a very successful night.

Scorps Recycling – Coffee cups, cans and bottles – we all have a role to play The club has looked at Dungog Councils plan to act on single use plastics and is giving some serious thought to all the plastic coming through the canteen. Our wonderful canteen team have started recycling our coffee cups with Council and encouraging people to bring their own mugs to get a discount on the cost of their coffee.

Presentation Day – Juniors & Seniors The Scorpions Junior presentation day is on Saturday 14th Sept with a 9am Breakfast of Bacon and Eggs Rolls at SunScorp Stadium East Gresford, then presentation and buckets of fun provided.
