2019 Gresford Show Gresford Show was once again a credit to the many people in the rings and pavilions who provide hours of work to make it happen. A huge vote of thanks goes to all those who spent time in preparing the grounds, pavilions and yards both pre and post show as well as all those volunteers who do the countless “little things” that help the Show to run smoothly. • Before icing a cake, dust with a tiny amount of flour to stop the icing from running off. • When making rock cakes always add 1 tbsp of water (cold) to help make the peaks on the cakes. • Do not hull strawberries before washing as this makes them soggy. • When making jam, tie the pips in a muslin bag and put in too as they contain the setting agent pectin. Remove the pips before bottling. • Old-fashioned iceblocks – add 3 spoons of honey to 300mls of milk, mix well. Put into ice cube trays and freeze.

An invitation to Commemorate Anzac Day 2019 Interest in the Anzac Day commemoration is increasing each year with support from the local communities of Paterson and Gresford. It is anticipated that the 2019 Dawn Service and Gresford Commemoration Service will again provide an opportunity for all residents to remember their family members and friends who have served their country in times of war and those who did not return. The Paterson Rotary Club will again assist in preparation of the Paterson Cenotaph for the Dawn Service and will provide assistance on the day as they have done for many years. The Gresford March has always been very well supported by the Gresford Community Group, the Rural Fire Brigade and the local Police. The RAAF Williamtown will provide a Catafalque Party for both the Dawn Service and Gresford March ceremonies. The Dawn Service will commence with the Veterans March from Stockers & Partridge Garage, Paterson at 5.30 am proceeding to the Paterson Cenotaph for the Dawn Service. Following the service, the Veterans and all attendees are invited

to the Paterson Tavern for a traditional mince on toast breakfast (Gold Coin donation). The Dawn Service was very well attended by the general public with record numbers in 2018 and it is anticipated a similar attendance for 2019. Relatives of deceased Veterans are encouraged to march wearing their medals on the right breast. The Gresford Veterans March will commence at Gresford Garage & Rural (previously Everett’s Garage) at 10.30 am proceeding down Park Street to the Gresford Cenotaph for the Anzac Day Service. The 2019 Anzac Day Service will be similar to the 2018 service and will again be supported by the local schools and the wider communities of Gresford, Paterson, Vacy and Martins Creek. Relatives of deceased Veterans are encouraged to march wearing their medals on the right breast. Immediately following the Anzac Day Service the RSL Ladies and the Gresford Community Group will be offering tea and coffee and Margot’s traditional Anzac Biscuits under the breezeway for Veterans, their families and attendees. Upper Allyn River Fungi Foray – Sunday 7 April, 8.30am The National Parks Association (Hunter Branch) in association with the Paterson Allyn Williams Science Hub is organising a fungi foray on Sunday 7 April 2019, including a talk on fungi in the area and short walks. The Upper Allyn has been described by experts as a ‘fungi hotspot’ of great significance and is worthy of conservation in a national park. Learn about fungi and participate in a community survey in the picturesque Upper Allyn and Paterson Valleys. This is the second Fungi Foray in the area. The first survey was held last year and this follow up survey is important to document annual variations. The survey area in Chichester State Forest is located about 1 hour north west of Dungog and 2 hours from Newcastle, and forms part of a proposed extension to Barrington Tops National Park.

New Priest for Gresford Paterson Anglican Parish
Rev Peter Middleton was commissioned as permanent part-time minister to the Gresford Paterson Anglican parish by Bishop Peter Stuart on Wednesday 27th February at St Paul’s Paterson. A supper and a special cake to welcome Peter and his wife Jill was held at the old CBC Bank after the Commissioning Service.

Magda Szubanski Szubanski’s memoir was heavily promoted when it was published in 2015, so many readers will be familiar with some of the story she has to tell. The underlying thread is introduced in the first sentence – “If you had met my father you would never, not for an instant, have thought he was an assassin.” He was fifteen when Hitler invaded Poland, and he joined the fighting as soon as he could. Eventually he became an executioner of suspected Nazis and traitors to the Resistance.
Peter previously served as a Chaplain at the Mission to Seafarers, Newcastle from 2014-2019 and before that was Rector of Charlestown Parish from 2005-2014.
As well as delving into her father’s character and story, Szubanski explores the shock of migration, her family’s backgrounds, her feelings of doubt and shame over her sexuality and weight gain, and her growing confidence in writing and performing. She writes lyrically and well, but is also often very relaxed and colloquial which helps maintain a natural and authentic voice. The photographs are divided into old family photos and more recent ones which include some of her comic characters. They are fascinating in themselves. This book is an exploration of her father’s psyche and her own; the horror and suffering of the war; and the guilt that can last a lifetime. It adds dimension to our understanding of the public face of Magda Szubanski.

Champion Delivery for Award Winning Locals
Local Gresford couple Paul and Denese Ward returned recently from Canberra Royal Show with the Champion Delivery Horse Award won by one of their homebred horses 'Dancer'. Dancer was shown in the Perfection Milk Cart. The Wards have shown and promoted this milk cart for over 20 years for the Perfection Milk Company based in western Sydney, but in this instance only the horse was judged. Over the years the milk cart has won many prestigious awards at Royal Show level. Paul and Denese also show an original Sydney baker’s cart which has won many major awards over the years as well, including Champion Turnout at Sydney Royal on several occasions. Both 'Ryll Black Night' (Banjo) winning 'The Ware Family Perpetual Trophy' for Champion Single Horse Business the milk cart and the baker's cart were Turnout at Sydney Royal Show 2002. Banjowas a jet black purebred Hackney gelding standing 16hh. He built in Sydney and worked there on milk won multiple Royal Show Champions in the Light Harness ring all over Australia before he was acquired by and bread runs in the early 1900s. the Ward family where he was switched to the Heavy Harness ring where he was equally successful. The Perpetual Trophies mentioned in this article and many others are on display at the Sydney Royal Easter show. It is both nostalgic and pleasing to witness your name and your horse's name engraved on these most prestigious trophies.

The light/ medium horses such as milkman’s horses were bred to cover the ground at a much faster pace and to travel distances at a smart clip. Whereas the heavy horses were bred to work agricultural implements or pull heavy loads at a walk only. They were never trotted or really ridden as they are today. In fact teamsters who were seen trotting their horses were dismissed from the company instantly. There are strict rules at the high level of showing today we are only traditional horse-drawn vehicles and the correct size horse are to be used. The Wards follow this criteria and are avid collectors of the 'appointments' which are part of the overall turnout. Some of the appointments include original money bags and milk measures that were used by Denese's grandfather on his

As a point of interest, as well as a prolific horseman showing trade delivery vehicles, breaking in horses etc, Patto, now retired is also legendary as the Clerk of the Course at Flemington Victoria where he has led in 45 Melbourne Cup Winners. Among the many horses he has broken in is the 1973 Melbourne Cup Winner 'Gala Supreme'. It was a great thrill and privilege to win a Royal Show Champion under a judge and legendary horseman such as John Patterson. Left: 'Georgia' winning the 'Mick Stapleton Perpetual Trophy' for the 'Best Business Delivery Vehicle on Parade' at Sydney Royal Show 2009 in a class of over 30 competitors. This prestigious class at Sydney Royal is held in the main arena at night with the lamps lit on all the vehicles. It showcases all types of delivery vehicles from butchers, milk, bakers, vegetable, confectionery, biscuit carts, beer lorries such as Carlton and United Breweries and many more. Georgia had a clean sweep at Sydney Royal in 2009 winning every class entered and every Champion in her category, taking home 4 Perpetual Trophies that year. This feat was unprecedented and has not been repeated since. The judge was an international judge from the UK. Georgia is a 'pocket rocket' standing only 15hh, proving that 'they don’t have to be big to be good!'. Georgia was bred by the late Mary Willsallen from 'Dunolly' Harden, a prolific breeder/show person who is very well known for breeding quality harness horses. Georgia was purchased by the Wards as a 3 year old and broken in and shown by Denese. She is also bred and on Clydesdale/Hackney lines and lives out her retirement at the Ward's property at Gresford

2019 Gresford Show
GRESFORD SHOW 2019 Once again Gresford Show demonstrated why it has the reputation of being one of the best traditional style country shows in the Hunter. The weather was hot and steamy for the 87th Gresford Show on March 8th & 9th with a downpour cooling things down on the Saturday evening. It was not enough to dampen enthusiasm at the Show with many sticking it out in the rain to watch some of the events in the Main ring. The Art preview evening on the Thursday was also combined with the presentation of the Gresford Showgirl with this years successful candidate being Rowena Dillon. Campdraft entries were good again this year with the Jim Jupp Memorial Open Draft being taken out by Murray Wilkinson on Mega Cat. On Saturday the crowd watched the action in the Main Ring and looked through the fantastic displays in the pavilions. These display never fail to impress visitors to the Show with a wonderful array of flowers; plants; sewing; cooking; jams; crafts;
photography and art. Even though the growing season has been very harsh there was an admiral display of fruit and vegetable with huge watermelons. The horse, cattle and poultry sections were well represented whilst the Animal
Nursery; Guinea Pigs; Bunnies and Pet Parade proved very popular with younger visitors to the Show. The gourmet sausage competition was held once again with the addition of a local producers stand.

Saturday afternoon saw a variety of entertainment in the main ring starting off with the Grand Parade with the CWA National President Mrs Tanya Cameron officially opened the Show. This was followed by the AFMXA motocross bike team; our own ag bikes; post splitting finals; invitation Steer Ride and Kids Disco but later ring events were halted due to the rain. The crowd didn’t go away disappointed as the weather cleared in time for the fantastic fireworks display which lit up the Gresford sky. R Lawrence

The Paterson Allyn Williams Science Hub Tackles DNA On the afternoon of Saturday March 16th the first proper rain for ages fell in Dungog. And in addition to the rain all the people in the James Theatre were also able to enjoy a fascinating pair of talks on the structure and function of DNA, presented by the Paterson Allyn Williams Science Hub The two speakers were Laura Greco who is a Ph.D. student at Newcastle University working on medical genetics, and Alex Kelly from BioFoundry who works in the DIY field of science. Together the two speakers gave a complete picture. Laura explained how our understanding of genetics got to be where it is today and Alex picked up from there and explained the rapidly advancing area of genetic manipulation. But they didn't just fit together chronologically. They were able to show how different their respective research environments are. Laura has access to academic resources and is subject to tightly controlled constraints and regulations whereas Alex has problems funding his research but has fewer controls on his work. Laura made the basic principles of genetics understandable by the use of interesting analogies and left us marvelling at how amazingly small are
the detailed structures that control all life forms. She elaborated on some well known examples of genetic manipulation and compared slow genetic manipulation by controlled breeding with the rapid changes made possible by genetic engineering.

Urgent kikuyu poisoning alert for local cattle producers Hunter Local Land Services is urging Lower Hunter and Manning Great Lakes cattle producers to be aware recent rain may increase the risk of kikuyu poisoning on kikuyu dominant pastures. Concerned producers should consider moving cattle to safer pastures or providing alternate feed in kikuyu paddocks such as silage or hay. Recent rains across the Lower Hunter and Manning Great Lakes is prompting strong pasture recovery and could lead to a repeat of last year’s kikuyu poisoning outbreak that killed more than 100 head of cattle across the region. What we do know about kikuyu poisoning is: • affected kikuyu does not look any different to safe kikuyu • affected kikuyu is likely to be less palatable to cattle, as they will avoid it if alternative feed is available • cattle deaths occur in paddocks when the cattle have no alternative feed available • deaths seem to stop once cattle are removed from the affected pasture, or at least when they are offered alternative feed (silage or hay) • the risk seems to subside after 3-4 weeks. “Cattle producers with high risk kikuyu pasture, containing little alternative feed are strongly advised to shift cattle to safer pasture or provide cattle with alternative feed if they are occupying kikuyu paddocks,” said Dr Kerr. “An additional warning, however, applies to provision of hay and silage - please introduce it gradually if the cattle are unaccustomed to it, as there have been a lot of cattle deaths during the last 12 months caused by nitrate poisoning when unadapted cattle have been given sudden access to rich hay.” Cattle producers are also being urged to report suspected cases of kikuyu poisoning to Hunter Local Land Services, as we continue to collect samples for research. Thanks to those who have reported stock deaths as this enables Hunter Local Land Services to warn all local producers, preventing further deaths.

Dowling St Workshop
The Dungog Show Ground Committee has already retained the services of a planner and is planning to submit a Development Application to Council for a primitive camping area.
25 community members attended the workshop on the strategic planning exercise for Dowling St and the wider township. Landscape Architect, David Moir and his team took us through this situational analysis of Dungog Township and then divided us into three groups to hear the community’s views, aspirations and concepts. The GM and I have received some very positive feedback on the night and, talking to people who sat at different tables to me, there were some remarkably similar directions that people were taking and some incredibly good ideas from each group coming forward. David’s team are collating the info from the three groups and putting together a report on that. I’ll keep you posted regarding the next steps.

Williams River Holiday Park (WRHP) Dungog Shire Council General Manager, Coralie Nichols, has released a 3rd FAQ, which is available on Councils website at: https://www.dungog.nsw.gov.au/ news/review-operations-williams-riverholiday-park I would like to correct an erroneous statement recently made by the media. The Williams River Holiday Park at Clarence Town is not being sold to a private investor. It is not Council’s to sell. The majority of the WRHP is on NSW Government Crown Land which is land that provides access for community, commercial and recreational purposes and ensures land is sustained for future use.
Coralie Nichols, has released the second update on the Williams River Holiday Park Closure. Excerpts of this update are as follows: Who is the consultant assisting Council and what have they been asked to do? Dungog Shire Council has secured consultancy services of SMA Tourism who are based in Newcastle to enable it to determine the best way forward in regard to the Williams River Holiday Park and, more broadly, the provision of caravan and camping facilities within the Clarence Town precinct. The two main tasks assigned to the consultancy are as follows: 1 To provide Council with an assessment of potential constraints and opportunities for further development of the Park, develop indicative scope for options to reinvest in the Park, and conduct benchmarking with comparable parks; and 2 While the Park is closed SMA Tourism have been asked to review alternative provision of access for caravan / camping / RV visitors through temporary events based camping approvals, primitive camping and / or free camping. Consultation opportunities with key community stakeholders has also been included in the brief. SMA Tourism is operating on this project as a matter of urgency.
How are the safety issues at the top end of the park being dealt with? A 3 month conditional Section 68 Certificate has been issued for the top end of the park which allows for the land use planning matters and the fire safety issues to be dealt with over this time and thus enabling residents with agreement at the Williams River Holiday Park to stay in their caravans. Council has contacted Mullanes Plumbing to install three new fire hoses in the top area of the Caravan Park. This will address the fire issues at the top of the park. Mullanes commenced work last week and estimated that it would take three days.
