resford Show once again proved why it is so well respected and enjoyed by the people who attend. Although the weather conditions were hot and humid many braved the heat to come along and support the show. The guinea pigs, bunnies, poultry and petting nursery proved popular with families whilst other spectators watched the horses and cattle go through their paces in the main arena. The new Torryburn Stud Off the Track Classic for Thoroughbreds was well supported. In the pavilions a huge display of pot plants and flowers filled the air with perfume and the cooking, jams and fancywork was
of the usual high standard. The produce, fruit and vegies also had a good display even though the season had not been kind. As darkness overtook the brilliant sunshine of the day the little patrons were entertained at the Kids Disco run by DJ Nathan while waiting for the fantastic Fireworks display which lit up the sky. Gresford Show is a credit to the many people in the rings, pavilions and many other areas who provide hours of work behind the scenes to make it all happen. A big vote of thanks goes to each and every one who helped in any way to make the Gresford Show such a success. – Rosalie Lawrence

Gresford CWA News
The Gresford show, hot, hotter and hotter in the kitchen. We had a marvellous group of volunteers. A huge "thank you" to all, especially the men who donned CWA aprons and cooked the bacon and egg rolls. Dotti Hilliard is to be complimented on the excellent menu as Cookery Officer she is the best! The dining room was in full swing and the sandwich room buzzing. Drinks flew out of the fridges due to the intense heat. But numbers were down and so were profits. The support we are given by the local community and visitors is much appreciated.
The Billy Cart Derby and Easter Fair saw us making and distributing the "snack boxes" for the volunteers on the course. Our CWA stand selling homemade goodies and "bric a brac" a lot of fun. The 20th of April will see the President of CWA New South Wales coming to our rooms for morning tea at 10am. We are hoping all our members will join us to welcome Mrs. Tanya Cameron from Rowena to our district. Mrs. Cameron will continue on to Dungog. There she will meet with CWA and community

GOLDEN CORN BAKE Ingredients: 440 g corn kernels (or 1 x 440 g can corn kernels) 1/2 cup grated carrot 1/2 cup grated zucchini 1/2 cup chopped red pepper 1/2 cup finely chopped celery 60 g finely chopped bacon 1 onion peeled & finely chopped 1/2 cup finely chopped shallots 4 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup grated tasty cheese 1/2 cup sifted self raising flour salt & pepper
Method:

Pre-heat oven. Combine all ingredients, season with salt & pepper. Mix well to combine. Spoon mixture into greased & lined loaf tin (11cm x 21cm). Bake in moderate oven (350) approximately 45-50mins or until cooked. Stand 5 minutes before turning out. Serve hot or cold – great with salads. Serves 4 – 6. This recipe is found on page 10 of the CWA Recipe Book. The book is available at Gresford Foodworks and the Gresford Store. Cost $13.

The weather was hot; the Show BBQ even hotter; sometimes patronage was a bit slow but not the wonderful volunteers who made the Gresford Show BBQ again a success through their catering skills and community spirit. A big thankyou to all the people at Gresford Meats, Gresford Foodworks and Dungog Bakery for making the ordering and supplying of the essentials as easy as possible. Gresford Street Planting – Stage 2 Autumn is the perfect time for planting and The Gresford Community Group will commence Stage 2 of their Crepe Myrtle street planting during the month of May, 2016. We will plant trees on the verges approaching Gresford and East Gresford and on the nature strips in front of houses in both villages. This is your chance to beautify your property and the streetscape of your town. Trees can be planted on the nature strip and or in your front garden! Trees, stakes, guards and labour are all free of charge. Please register your preferences at the Crossroads Café, Gresford, or Foodlands grocery store in East Gresford. We would appreciate your registration as soon as possible so that we can determine the number of trees we need for this great project. You will need to write your name, contact details and number of trees you would like on the form provided. If you have a long frontage, we are happy to discuss number of trees for your site.
ANZAC DAY 2016 – A challenge to follow the Anzac Centenary of 2015
Following the significant Anzac Centenary celebration of 2015, the 2016 Anzac Day celebration will have a lower profile but certainly no less significant. The Dawn Service will again begin with the Veterans March commencing at Stockers & Partridge Garage, Paterson at 5.30 am proceeding to the Paterson Cenotaph for the Dawn Service. Following the service the Veterans and all attendees are invited to the Paterson Tavern for a traditional mince on toast breakfast (Gold Coin donation). The Dawn Service was very well attended by the Gresford and Paterson general public in 2015 and it is anticipated the same attendance for 2016. The Gresford Veterans March will commence at Everett’s Garage at 10.30 am proceeding down Park Street to the Gresford Cenotaph for the Anzac Day Service. The 2016 Anzac Day Service will not be as extensive as the Anzac Centenary 2015 service, however, it will again be supported by the local schools and is expected to attract the wider communities of Gresford, Paterson, Vacy and Martins Creek. Immediately following the Anzac Day Service the RSL Ladies will offer a cold buffet Anzac Day Lunch for the Veterans and their families in the RSL Hall. All members of the public attending the service are invited and encouraged to join the Veterans for lunch especially as the ranks of the Veterans are now thinning. A nominal fee of $15 is charged for lunch and drinks and a raffle ticket for a new BBQ will be available for a gold coin. Following the Anzac Day Lunch at approx 2.00pm the traditional Anzac Day Two Up game will commence. The Two Up has traditionally been a light hearted game, attracting some of the local characters from the area and visitors, lasting for approximately two hours. The First Five Years Last A Lifetime them to develop at their own rate. Teaching occurs through organised play activities in the areas of arts, crafts, manipulative play, constructive play, language, music and movement, maths, science, drama and gross motor skills.
Hunter Mobile Preschool is a mobile preschool service, established to accommodate the needs of young children aged 3-5 in outlying and rural areas in and around the Lower Hunter area. Operating since 1979, the mobile preschool is a not-for-profit, community based service – this means that all money that comes in is put back into the preschool for the children Hunter Mobile Preschool has been operating in Gresford for over 25 years and currently visits the School of Arts
Over the years the Gresford community have been very supportive of the preschool and have made many additions to the building for the benefit of the service such as recently replacing the outdoor play equipment, rebuilding the sandpit and providing shaded play areas. Preschool also enjoys participating in the Gresford Show each year.

At the new Vacy venue Hunter Mobile Preschool is quickly establishing a close relationship with Vacy Public School through Library visits and open communication and looks forward to working with other community groups to benefit the children of Vacy and its surrounds. Fees for both venues are currently $32 per day, with a fee subsidy available for qualifying families.

2016 Gresford Show Pictorial On Saturday afternoon the gathering was entertained by a variety of events in the main ring starting off with the Grand Parade which included some horse drawn carriages carrying the lovely Gresford Showgirl entrants. Mr Cameron Archer, officially opened the Show. This was followed by an ag bike demonstration; post splitting finals; and the inaugural Richardson Bros Transport Bullock Ride with Shawn Thompson taking first place.

Clean Up Australia Day 2016 – Gresford and East Gresford

Despite the heat we had 15 volunteers to help clear the rubbish from the roadways leading in to both our villages. The worst site was at the top of Bingleburra Road where thoughtless people are dumping anything from whitegoods, bicycles, car tyres and paint in tins! The offenders should be forced to live in cities such as Cairo where I have seen the rubbish in the streets knee high and infection from this rubbish seriously out of control. Why, I ask myself, do offenders wind down their car windows and throw out bottles, cans, food containers and used nappys?
I also ask myself, why was there not one resident from either village out helping to clean up? NOT ONE!! All volunteers came from out of town and they came with a sense of pride. Where were the mums and dads and their children? If parents don’t act as role models, then how on earth will our children learn to leave our beautiful planet in great shape for future generations? One female volunteer who is 73 years old filled two bags of rubbish just from the skate board park. She quite rightly said “why should I be picking up the rubbish that kids have dumped”.

Of course in Singapore there is an enormous fine if anyone drops so much as a sweet wrapper. Men in suits can be seen doing community work picking up rubbish because they were fined. I wish we could have a similar system. If you are guilty, then please think before you automatically throw it out of your vehicle onto our roads, or just let it drop to the ground. Please help keep our community clean. Please find some community spirit and help next year with this very worthy cause. Janie Chandler, Coordinator

Howzatt Gresford Cricket 2015/2016

The 2015/16 Season saw Gresford with 2 new junior teams, an under 10/11 team playing a modified version of the game and an under 12’s team entering The Maitland Competition playing as The Gresford Vacy Colts. With the help of Brendon Sellens, Tom Everett and Beau Cowley we watched the teams grow and improve their cricketing skills as each week passed. Both teams performed admirably and with great sportsmanship on and off the field. We are very proud of the boys commitment and enthusiasm and wish to extend our thanks to all that helped to make this such a great season, not only to the coaches that freely give up their time to impart their skills but also to the parents that knowingly and unprotected take to the nets and fields during training sessions, dodging swinging bats and flying balls, to the chauffers who
Livestock and The Maitland Mutual. We also held or first fundraising dinner with Brett Kimmorley and Ian Craig which was a huge success with all funds going a long way towards some much needed new training nets to be erected at The Gresford Sporting Complex. We will finish the season with a presentation afternoon to be held on Sunday 20th March at 2pm in the backyard of The Hotel Beatty. Finally, a huge congratulations goes to The Gresford Open Grade Senior team who in the stifling heat defeated The Dungog Bunnies to win the Grand Final Lucas Hill in action for the under-10s. on Saturday 12th March. ARCHIDOMYRTUS BECKLERI – Small Leafed Myrtle This is a beautiful shrub that has an equally beautiful flower and I can never understand why it is not more widely grown. It grows to about 5m under cultivation and has graceful arching branches and neat shiny leaves. The fruit is reddish yellow to orange when ripe and as a bonus it is edible although it is a little crunchy! This shrub will grow almost anywhere that it can get a foothold and prefers poorer soils. It can struggle in situations where it is subject to hot summer sun so the cooler protected corners are best. In the local area it has been recorded from the Allyn & Williams Rivers, Barrington Tops, Chichester State Forst, Jerusalem Creek, Tabbil Creek head waters and Pilchers Mountain.

This month we take a look at Dungog by Design’s latest creative project – YARN BOMBING. ‘Yarn bombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting or graffiti knitting is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre to decorate mundane public objects and places. The new art form brightens up cold urban environments and brings a smile to the passer byes’. It has developed with crews yarn bombing worldwide, sometimes the installations may have peaceful protest messages with political statements. Houston USA artist Bill Davenport was creating and exhibiting crochet-covered objects in Houston in the 1990s. The movement has been attributed to Magda Sayeg, from Houston, USA, who says “she first got the idea in 2005 when she covered the door handle of her boutique with a custom-made cozy”. Sayeg’s accidental yarn bombed creation, triggered off a global community of yarn bombers, with yarn bombing crews founded across Europe, North America and Australasia. One of the most active groups in Australia is “Knitting Nannas Against Gas”.

Local Living Dungog donated $100 towards the cost of yarn for this project. “We are very happy to support creative work that builds on a vibrant Dungog community” – says Jo New of Local Living Dungog. “Come and enjoy the comfort and colour, and help us thank the wonderful workers at the centre for all their efforts especially after the ‘big storm’. Dungog by Design is pleased to be able to create and give something that makes people smile.” Misha Bevan who lives in East Gresford, “Is a whiz with the knitting machine and created over 30mts of knitted snake that was then stitched and hooked onto the slats of the bench seats”. Misha is a talented artist who has exhibited her textile creations and installation work in curated exhibitions in Newcastle in recent years. Her stunning knitted Gothic sculptural work
for the Adornment – Wearable Art exhibition at Newcastle Art Space Gallery, received much praise from the public and fellow artists.

The table below provided by nbn co shows that the site, and others at Martins Creek and Paterson, will be ready for service in early 2017.
Following the successful launch of nbn’s Sky Muster™ satellite last October, the new service will be available to homes and businesses in rural and remote Australia that fall outside the fixed line and fixed wireless areas. But for some students, it was just too hard to pick one favourite moment. “My favourite part in Bottom’s Dream was all of it,” said Acacia. Lara agreed: “My favourite was all of it because it was unique.”
Mischievous sprites, crazy love and dastardly plots played out on stage at Gresford Public School last month when four Bell Shakespeare actors visited to perform Bottom’s Dream. The play, an adaptation of the William Shakespeare comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, kept the students enthralled as they followed the exploits of Nick Bottom and his friends as well as the fairy royals King Oberon and Queen Titania, playful sprite Puck and fairies Cobweb and Mustardseed. “This performance was the culmination of weeks of literary study on the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” school principal Pauline Mitchell said. “Feedback from the children was overwhelmingly positive.” Year 1 student Kammi said: “My favourite part was when the fairies put flower juice in the queen fairy’s eyes and took her puppy dog when she was asleep. Then the queen fell in love with a donkey!”

Shakespeare’s works have featured in literary studies at Gresford Public School for many years and have become favourites of the students. “With Shakespeare you never know what’s going to happen next,” said Year 4 student Ella. Year 4 student Dylan agreed, Rhys and Felix saying: “I find it exciting. When Year 6 girls Alysha, Leila and Jada with Bell Shakespeare actor Abbie you read one part you don’t want to stop reading.” The young students recognise that the language of Shakespeare is different to modern day language but they see it as a challenge. “With all the words, it’s a bit like a tongue twister,” said Year 5 student Liza. The Bell Shakespeare actors – Felix Gentle, Abbie-lee Lewis, Rhys Keir and Jess Loudon – took time out after the performance to chat with the students and pose for photographs.
