Gresford Family Country Dance, Gresford Showground 4 Nov from 6.30pm It’s time to kick up your heels. Get ready for Gresford’s ‘country hoedown’ – a family dance with a difference. You can twist and twirl the night away with The Swamp Dawkins Band and have some great family ‘fun and games’.

Getting to know the locals...

by Noel Jupp OAM, Dip Hort, QP Dept Ag & Fisheries Trochocarpa laurina Tree Heath A lot of plants in the forest get overlooked by gardeners, landscapers and even by people trying to restore forest areas and this is one of them. It could be because there is not much material available but I think it is because people just do not bother to look. This species does not produce showy flowers or fruits but as you can see in the picture, the young growth makes up for all of this, especially in mid-winter when things are rather dull.

The fruit is small with a fleshy purplish black outer coat surrounding a small round seed that is eagerly eaten by Satin Bower birds and Lewins Honeyeater.

Tree Heath can be difficult to propagate, both by seed and cuttings. Over the past three years we have been doing trials to achieve better germination rates and because the seed has a very short period of viability, trials are very limited. Tree Heath grows from Bermagui North to Fraser Island, west to the Central Tablelands and then again in New Guinea. It grows best

in fertile moisture retentive soils that are well drained. It does not like full sun and is best grown as an understory plant even though it can grow up to 13 metres tall.

Young plants can be damaged by severe frost. Aboriginal people used the timber to make waddies. The timber is pink, hard and close grained and is used for turnery

Trochocarpa montana from very high elevations is similar but even showier with brilliant red new growth. Trochocarpa laurina is an ideal plant for bonsai and similar work. In shady places it makes a beautiful hedge but is slow growing.

Method: Pastry – Sift flour and sugar into a bowl. Rub in butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add water slowly and mix with a knife until dough forms. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Line a greased 9 inch tart dish. Roll out pastry and line dish. Prick bottom with a fork. Bake in moderate oven until lightly cooked.

Filling – Return cooked gramma to saucepan and add sugar and cinnamon. When sugar is dissolved add the lemon juice. Cool.

Place cooled filling into prepared pastry shell.

Bake at 180º until pastry is golden – approximately 25-30 minutes.

The Troubled Man Henning Mankell This is the final of the books in the Wallander series, which have been scripted for television and seen on ABC TV in recent years. Set in Sweden, they follow the exploits of Kurt Wallander, a lonely and mildly maverick policeman. In this book, Wallander is reaching the end of his working life and his last case is deeply personal, as it involves the disappearance of his son-in-law’s father, an esteemed Naval Officer.

When the missing man’s wife also disappears, the stresses on the family increase as the mystery deepens. The case is made sensitive because of a connection with suspected Russian espionage, and Wallander has to act appropriately, but his own health is deteriorating and he has disturbing mental blanks.

The pace is slow, but the narrative is absorbing. Wallander is restrained, intuitive and introspective, and we become caught up in both the enigma of the case and his own worrying fate.

Wimbledon fever reached Gresford during the school holidays with 10 junior players from Gresford Tennis Club hitting the court for a round-robin tournament.

The fun tournament allowed the juniors, who are regulars at the club's weekly coaching classes on Friday afternoons, to put their skills and Tom Doyle prepares to return serve. sportsmanship into action in a real game situation. It also exposed them to the intricacies of scoring a tennis game.

Need to Know – Bushfire prevention and safety

As the local 'burn off' season and summer approaches it is important to consider bushfire prevention and safety.

Fortunately at the Cool Burn Indigenous Fire Management Field Day held by Gresford and District Landcare earlier this year Richard Jones from Vacy RFS did just that. Here is what he said.

We can’t eliminate bush fires but we can reduce the impact and severity. This means we need Hazard Reduction strategies for our properties. To do this we need to: • Determine fuel loads and structure of your property - estimate tonnes of fuel per ha, especially fine fuels less than 6mm that burn hard • Consider the effects of the environment and community – creeks and water courses need to be protected to prevent erosion, smoke can cause respiratory issues for neighbours, a large fire can generate an ember attack on nearby properties up to kilometres away. Neighbours need to work together, there is a risk created if you property is secured from bushfire risk but the next door place is overrun with high fuel loads and poor access.

• Ensure there are adequate fire breaks and control lines to access ember

attacks and hot spots. Remember that fire can travel up to 10km/h in forest and 14km/h in grasslands.

• Have your Asset Protection Zones in place • Always mop up and patrol after burning to reduce the risk of re-ignition.

It is your responsibility to control the fire and keep it on your own property. If it escapes – you might be held liable for any damage it causes to fencing, Telstra lines or electrical poles and wires.

Slow rate of spread – The fire should spread only at a slow walking pace.

CONDITIONS FOR A LOW INTENSITY BURN Temperature affects the fire behaviour and moisture levels in the fuel. Ideally temperatures should be less than 25°C for low intensity burning.

Humidity affects fire behaviour by altering fuel moisture levels. Consider burning when the relative humidity is 50 per cent and rising.

Wind speed usually strengthens midmorning and reduces late evening. Low intensity burns are best carried out in wind conditions less than 15km/h.

Remember that our prevailing winds are westerly winds.

Look for stable atmospheric conditions with a high-pressure system with clear skies and light winds.

Help Gresford Celebrate it's history A 'Celebration Day' with a focus on early Gresford will occur on Sunday 22nd October this year. If you have any old photos, memorabilia or information, then please contact the Gresford District Historical Society ASAP. The GDHSI will present this special day along with the Gresford Community Group, .

Performing Society in their 20th year will entertain with plenty of live music instore. Activities for children and young people will be present. This includes a jumping castle. An old time spinning chocolate wheel is always fun and there is a good chance some pumpkin bowling will take place.

Celebrative activities will be held within the grounds of our local museum, the Therese Doyle Community Hall, right next to the Gresford Sporting Ground on Gresford Road – the southern side of East Gresford itself. St Helen's Catholic Church is situated across the road from the museum. The church, in it's 150th year, is also being celebrated on this day – Sunday 22nd October. There will be plenty of free parking. Numbers are expected to be large. Attractions and activities will begin at 9am and will continue through to 3.30pm.

All local organisations involved have contributed greatly to our local area and on special event days for many decades.

They well and truly add to the nostalgic image of what Gresford is all about.

Tracing the history of our township back to its origin is intriguing. Early information and images, maps and literature will be available to view and to purchase. Scanners within our museum will be in action should more photos come our way. Anyone with connections to the Gresford area and through past years definitely need to make an effort to come along. All visitors are welcome. Lots of fun, memories and chit-chat will surely take place. Undercover and open seating will be available.

August 17 is Dungog’s Boomerang Bags First Birthday!

In February 2016 Dungog became the 20th Boomerang Bag community. We launched 6mths later with a Science Week “special event” at the James Theatre with 500 bags out and in the community. Boomerang Bags boxes were placed in the IGA and the Newsagent; community engagement had begun. The Boomerang bags Dungog Team has now made 1750 bags for our community to use.

I have always had a big picture model of working with the whole community on education and awareness embracing Dungog Shire Council, the business community, schools and households.

You can compost your fruit and vegetable scraps for your garden or farm needs.

Keep a bread bag or container in the freezer for any meat and dairy scraps or bones that can’t be fed to the animals.

Use newspaper or a paper bag as a bin liner for anything else that can’t be recycled. You can throw rubbish straight into the garbage bin, it doesn’t have to be in a bag at all and it’s easy enough to hose out our bins if need be. It’s about choosing to change our habits – why wouldn’t we all want to do that for our children’s future?
