Remembrance Day - Wed 11 November On Remembrance Day, we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and acknowledge our responsibility to work for the peace they fought hard to achieve. This year Gresford News is featuring the stories of 3 brothers from Lostock – David, Victor and Clyde Lawrence.

The three brothers enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 20 July 1916 and sailed away to fight in WW1.

Only one would return. He is buried at Lostock Cemetery. The Plot Number 47 is all that has represented Clyde Lawrence for the past 68 years.

Flying Fox Feedback Following its resolution to create a Flyingfox Management Plan to reduce the community impacts of Flying-fox camps throughout Dungog Shire, Council is calling on all residents to have their say on these ‘Little Aussie Battlers’, particularly in relation to the camps at Gresford, Dungog and Clarence Town.

Council’s Manager Environmental Services, Mr Paul Minett, says community feedback and engagement is essential to the creation of an effective management plan for the region.

We understand that Flying-fox camps in residential areas can significantly impact local communities, and so community feedback will be crucial in ensuring the management plan is relevant, timely and appropriate in minimising these impacts.

We’re calling on all residents and other stakeholders to provide feedback via our online survey on the dedicated web page: dungog.nsw.gov.au/flying-foxes Our aim is to create a management plan that will provide a framework to help reduce impacts on Dungog Shire residents, while conserving these animals and supporting the pivotal role they play in sustaining Australia’s fragile ecosystem.

ST. MARY-on-ALLYN, 175th anniversary The story begins with the arrival from Wales of Charles Boydell, who was given a grant of land north of Paterson on the site of the town of Gresford.

He named his property “Camyr Allyn” which is Welsh for “a cottage on the Allyn”. Charles prospered and wrote enthusiastically to his younger brother William, who was then a medical student at the University of Edinburgh.

William decided to follow his brother and settle in New South Wales and booked his passage on the good ship Camden. Among his fellow passengers were William Grant Broughton, who had been recently consecrated first Bishop of Australia, his wife and two daughters. William fell in love with one of the daughters, Mary Phoebe and in due course asked the Bishop for approval to marry Mary. The Bishop’s reply was an emphatic “No” as he was familiar with the district where William was to settle and that the nearest place of worship was at Paterson which was too far along a bush track for Mary to attend church service.

The first incumbent at St Paul’s was the Reverend John Jennings Smith and the original church was built in 1839 and could hold 400 persons. Six years later the present church was consecrated.

St Paul’s was built with money raised from two missionary societies, public subscriptions and Rev. Jennings Smith paid for the shingle roof. The building is of simple design with cedar lining the ceiling and panelled dado covers on the lower walls. St Paul’s is heritage listed as is St Mary’s.

The Church was completed in 1844, and Bishop Broughton kept his promise to consecrate it, naming it St. Mary-onAllyn. The consecration took place on the 26th November 1845.

The Gresford Community Group held its October monthly meeting at the arboretum to allow members to appreciate the ongoing success of the arboretum project and also liaise re development of the relationship with the Gresford Vacy Soccer Club and future plans for the expansion of the soccer ground facility with the goal of creating a recreational and community precinct encompassing the area.

Key issues discussed included: • Repairs to the Therese Doyle Hall roof.

• The final approval of the new licence agreement between the Community Group and the Gresford Historical Society.

• The Community Group’s Constitution is currently being revised to make it more relevant to the organisation’s goals.

• Plans by council to improve the Gresford Road/Bingleburra Road intersection, a serious blackspot in the area.

• The installation of the Community Access AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) outside the East Gresford Police Station. Note that Gresford and Vacy RFS vehicles also carry AEDs. • Report on police activities in the district during the month.

11.11.2020 Remembrance Day For Remembrance Day this year, Gresford News is featuring the stories of 3 brothers from Lostock – David, Victor and Clyde Lawrence. The story and photographs have been kindly provided by Linda Hodges.

Three young Lawrence men (Clyde Rookwood Lawrence, David Hamilton Lawrence, and Victor Samuel Lawrence) from Lostock enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 20 July 1916.

Private David Hamilton Lawrence Born in Lostock on 20 August 1893, to parents Richard Lawrence and Amelia Lawrence nee Dennis.

Aged 22 years, and after spending two years in the Light Horse Brigade, David enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force (8th Reinforcement of the 54th Battalion) in June 1916.

David embarked Sydney on 11 November 1916, aboard the vessel 'Suevic', and disembarked at Davenport (England) on 30 January 1917. Just two weeks later, David died on 17 February 1917, of suspected Cerebral Spinal Meningitis at the Salisbury (England) Isolation Hospital, and is buried nearby in Stratford Sub-Castle Church Yard.

Gresford Vacy Football Club – End of Season A big thank you to all our coaches, managers and committee volunteers that navigated the club successfully through this Covid Year. Congratulations to the U12s team, winning the premiership comfortably with 2 games clear and 39 points for the season, played 14 games, lost 1 and no draws. This large mixed team has done great with new players and old. Paterson Historical Society is very fortunate to have a new book ready to be released in November. Alison Pitkin has been researching the history of the village and district for some years. She has interviewed many locals and those whose families have lived in the village for generations. All this hard work and commitment has produced a 156 page book.

Rather than relying on photographs Alison enlisted the support of Val Anderson to sketch every building which is covered in the book. The book is not only a history book but also a sketchbook of the village. Val is a renowned Hunter Valley artist who generously supports many causes with her art. She has illustrated much of the district over the years and in many ways, this is a culmination of her work. There are over 100 individual sketches in the book – a magnificent contribution in itself.

In keeping with Covid era guidelines we are convening a soft launch in Tucker Park. This worked well for the release of Wayne Patfield’s book Steamships on the Paterson River We will be setting up a small desk and stall in Tucker Park under the poplar trees for an afternoon when anyone can call by and see Alison and purchase the book.

This will be from 1-4pm on Sunday 15th November 2020. There will be no official proceedings, so people can arrive at any time between 1 and 4pm. which has never been published previously, and can only be found in The books are an important source of this great book by Alison. revenue for the Society and it is essential to make them available before Alison has structured the book around Christmas. ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN FOR AUSTRALIA

The Liberal and Nationals Government’s Economic Recovery Plan will work to repair our economy, recover from the pandemic and grow our regional communities.

SUPPORTING SENIOR AUSTRALIANS

2020 has been a year that none of us will forget.

After fires, floods and drought, our country was hit

by COVID-19.

COVID-19 has resulted in the most severe global economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Across the world, the equivalent of 600 million people have lost their jobs. In response to this crisis, the Morrison Government has committed unprecedented support to save lives, cushion the blow and help Australians remain in jobs.

To support Age Pensioners, the Government provided $750 payments in April and July.

Age Pensioners will now receive an additional $250 payment in December and another $250 payment in March.

To support senior Australians who want to keep living at home, an additional 23,000 home care packages will be provided.

This brings the total to more than 180,000 places, three times the number of home care packages than when this Government was elected in 2013.

JobKeeper is a $101 billion lifeline that is supporting around 3.5 million jobs, and JobSeeker doubled the safety net. Together, our actions saved 700,000 jobs.

We could do this because we entered this crisis in a position of strength, brought the Budget back to balance for the first time in 11 years and maintained our AAA credit rating.

Australia’s economy is fighting back. More than half of those who lost their jobs are back at work.

However, there remains a monumental task ahead.

This Budget sets out the next phase of our Economic Recovery Plan.

GUARANTEEING HEALTH CARE The Budget delivers record funding for health of $93.8 billion in 2020-21, an increase of almost 43% since 2014-15.

Extending Medicare subsidised telehealth services has enabled over 30 million consultations since the crisis began.

This Budget includes funding for new lifesaving medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme – to treat leukaemia, melanoma and Parkinson’s disease and help women with ovarian cancer.

This year, $5.7 billion is being provided to support mental health, including funding for critical front-line services, suicide prevention, and doubling the number of Medicare funded psychological services through the Better Access Initiative, from 10 to 20.

TAX RELIEF FOR 11 MILLION AUSTRALIANS

BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE Rebuilding our economy includes building more roads, rail and bridges. This Budget is expanding its 10-year infrastructure pipeline which is already supporting 100,000 jobs on worksites across Australia today.

A further $14 billion in new and accelerated infrastructure projects will support a further 40,000 jobs.

A further $2 billion is being invested in road safety upgrades.

An additional $1 billion will support local councils to upgrade local roads, footpaths and street lighting.

More than 11 million taxpayers will get a tax cut backdated to 1 July this year.

Lower and middle-income earners will, this year, receive tax relief of up to $2,745 compared with 2017-18.

We will also retain the Low- and Middle-Income Tax Offset for an additional year.

The changes mean more than 7 million Australians will receive tax relief of $2,000 or more this year.

This rewards hard work. It means Australians will have more of their own money to spend on what matters to them, which will help local businesses and create more jobs.

JOBMAKER HIRING CREDIT A new JobMaker Hiring Credit will encourage businesses to hire younger Australians.

The JobMaker Hiring Credit will be payable for up to twelve months and be immediately available to employers who hire those on JobSeeker aged 16-35.

It will be paid at the rate of $200 per week for those aged under 30, and $100 per week for those aged between 30 and 35. New hires must work for at least 20 hours a week. Treasury estimates that this will support around 450,000 jobs for young people.

INVESTING IN SKILLS AND TRAINING 100,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships will be supported with a 50% wage subsidy for businesses who employ them. This is in addition to the 180,000 existing apprenticeships and trainees that are being protected.

The new JobTrainer fund will create up to 340,000 free or lowcost training places for school leavers and job seekers.

50,000 new higher education short courses will be available, including in health, IT, agriculture, science and teaching.

New cadetships and apprenticeships are being provided for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics

MODERN MANUFACTURING AND RESEARCH Australia’s manufacturing sector employs around 860,000 Australians.

The Modern Manufacturing plan will target six national manufacturing priorities, to build on our strengths and ensure manufacturing plays a greater role in our recovery: • medical products; • food and beverage manufacturing; • recycling and clean energy; • resources technology and critical minerals processing; • defence industry; and • space industry.

This Budget also provides $2 billion in additional Research and Development incentives.

The Morrison Government is also providing $1 billion for new research funding for our universities, backing our best and brightest minds.

Garden Group We have virtually come to life again! For the first time this year our members have met in a garden. Only 20 members at each session but it was magical for all who ventured out! Throughout Covid I believe many families have been digging and planting. The nurseries around us have been bombarded with sales…particularly plants for the veg patch. I’ve just taken a bag of potatoes from my pantry that were sprouting, cut them up to leave one sprout on each piece, dried them in a secure place for a few days (stops them going moldy after planting) and then planted them about 10cm deep in a furrow sprinkled with blood and bone. As they leaf up, you need to keep mounding the soil around them so they grow higher and higher. The more you mound up, the larger the quantity of potatoes below!

Don’t forget to keep an eye on your citrus trees. They probably need a spray of white oil every three weeks during the hot months to take care of leaf miner, black sooty mould and scale insects. Water in some trace elements and iron chelate now but do not feed with fertilizer until flowering has finished. If you do you will get large leaves and less fruit.

Native Frangipanni insects, are evergreen, prefer a welldrained and nutritious soil but can tolerate a variety of soil types – even our clay and grow to approximately 5 – 8m.

The Native Frangipanni are hardy, drought resistant, will tolerate a light frost and benefit from growing in a group. The compact ‘Gold Nugget’ variety is a small shrub growing to about a metre high and a metre wide which responds well to pruning to form a low hedge.

Gresford Landcare is currently undergoing a study into sustainable grazing.

Doyle's property, with Peter Andrew AM as guest speaker. He explained his natural sequence farming management ideas that will enable maximum moisture to be held in the landscape.

A field inspection of a pasture trial was held at Ken Chandler's property on Monday 19th October. The trial of a mixed species pasture of legumes and cereals (including oats, rye, corn, vetch, red clover and radish) were planted to promote carbon sequestration and organic buildup of the soil.

At the AGM this month, Ken Chandler stood down after 8 years as President.

Julia Wokes was elected President, David Hyde is our new Secretary and Lisa Connors was re-elected Treasurer.

The TOQUILLA STRAW HAT was well known for many years as the Panama hat. Panama was the country that exported the hat to Central America, the United States and Europe where it became popular. The name of the palm species known as toquilla straw is native to Ecuador. It has a long stem of up to 2 metres high, with wide fan-shaped leaves which are harvested after 3 years.

The quality of the hat is measured by degrees – the number of threads per square metre.

The longest married couple in the world live in Ecuador. They have been married for 79 years. The cinchona tree of Ecuador produces quinine. Also it was in the Ecuadorian Amazon that the world’s first cocoa drink was prepared more than five thousand years ago.

An Australian fauna and flora is chosen each year by the Agricultural & Environmental Committee to encourage members to discover more about some of our native species.

A foe is also chosen to bring awareness to the weeds or pests having a negative impact on our land and/or waterways.

Try this easy recipe:

OVERNIGHT PROCESSOR MARMALADE 1 1 2 1 1

large grapefruit, chopped lemon chopped large oranges chopped litre (4 cups water) water 3/4 litres (7 cups) sugar

Process fruit finely, seeds and all, in batches.

Combine fruit and water in large boiler. Bring to boil.

Reduce heat. Simmer uncovered 30 mins.

Next day, bring mixture to the boil. Add sugar.

Stir constantly until sugar is dissolved.

Boil rapidly uncovered without stirring for about 30mins or until jam will jell when tested on a cold saucer. Stand 5 mins. Pour into hot sterilized jars.

Seal when cold.

The Farm by Joanne Ramos Ramos is a Philippine-born American, who understands the tensions and difficulties of her Filipina characters very well. In her author’s note she says, ‘The Farm' is a work of fiction. But it is also in many ways, true.’

She describes the lives of Filipinas who leave their own families to look after other people’s – a well-known international phenomenon, with its attendant heartache, struggle and frequent exploitation.

This novel borders on science fiction, in that it is the story of a surrogate farm, where poor women are paid to carry the babies of rich people who are too busy making money or courting fame to carry their own. The so-called ‘Hosts’ are implanted with the embryos of the ‘Clients’ and are well-looked after in terms of food and medical care for the duration of their pregnancies. They are paid a salary and receive a bonus for a successful delivery, but are virtual prisoners until the babies are born.

The main complication comes when a Host is torn between her obligation to the baby she is carrying and her own daughter, who has been left with a relative. The ruthless efficiency of the Farm management becomes obvious when their system is threatened.

Despite their superficial kindness and liberality, the self-interest and hypocrisy of the wealthy characters is clear. This is an effective exploration of the contrast between the rich and poor in America.

All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder. There has been a recent donation of mysteries and thrillers to the library in addition to the Lee Child donation, and some of the donated romance novels are now available in the street library.

This is the sixth, and last, in a series of articles that Dr Jamie Derkenne has written for the Gresford News.

White Australians often think of people of other cultures and nations in terms of broad stereotypes. We even describe ourselves in these terms, often referring to Australian larrikinism, and the “fair go” even though the most cursory examinations of these preconceptions reveal them to be illusory.

So it is with attitudes towards Indigenous Australians that still persist to this day.

Australian literature is full of phrases such as “howling blacks”. Even Sigmund Freud described Australian Indigenous peoples as “the most miserable” on Earth, while no less a poet than Banjo Paterson, another purveyor of the “howling black” meme, goes on to write that Indigenous Australians are lazy and ungrateful. Banjo wrote mostly for a news magazine whose masthead up until the 1960s included the phrase “Australia for the White Man”. We can well imagine that the Indigenous Banjo met were indeed ungrateful; what had they to be thankful for? Henry Thomas Ebsworth in 1826 writes of the Indigenous in general and the Gringai in particular “They have commonly been treated in

William Scott describes a group reduced to about 50 people at Port Stephens by 1873 (Ebsworth writes there were 200 people 27 years previously), but writes often about a pervading sense of humour. They were “marvellously clever mimics” able to exactly mimic the mannerisms of notable people, both Colonist and Gringai. He writes “Their good temper and ... relish of fun was never more exemplified than when

As well as a keen sense of humour the Gringai also displayed a remarkable

stoicism. Scott’s father, a physician, helped set the leg on an elderly man who had broken it so badly the fractured bone was visible. Scott writes that not once did he complain, and that the next day the old man had cast off the plaster as it was too much of an encumbrance.
