‘Boot Hill’ goes to Dungog
Boot Hill featured at the launch of the James Theatre Window Exhibitions in February.
F
our or five years ago Rodney and Angus Hipwell put up a ‘Boot Hill’ sign and a few old shoes on the dairy fence. Since then the boots have increased to about 1000 by anonymous donations and a selection of them have made their way to the James Theatre in Dungog. ‘The Lost Soles of Boot Hill’ is the first window exhibition at the James and launches a program of interesting and quirky, creative visual exhibitions in the Theatre windows. Curated by Brian Doherty, the exhibitions will be installed during periods when the foyer is not being used. At the opening on Tuesday 28 February Brian thanked the Hipwell family for their generous spirit with the creation of ‘Boot Hill’. “The result is an anonymous but truly public artwork that has a great sense of humour and freedom and obviously connects with people. At one stage a chair was put out near the Boot Hill sign and visitors of many nationalities have been seen to stop, go over to the chair, and have their photo taken. One person was seen running along the road... went over and got a pair of shoes to wear then kept running. He returned the shoes the next day. Some shoes have messages or just names have been written on them.”
“It makes a good start to the window displays... it’s fun and relates specifically to the local region. I’m looking for proposals for future installations – anyone can put in a proposal so long as they enter into the sense of good hearted public display. Send your idea to PO Box 73 East Gresford, or call me on 0412 372 687”

The
Gresford Showgirl Contestants 2012
March 2012
Sarah Hunt
Elysha Jordan
Samantha Johnston
Jessica Williams
Four local women from across the district will this week vie to become Gresford Showgirl. A love for the community and a keen interest in the show something they all have in common. Three of the competitors are having another go at the event after enjoying it in previous years. This includes previous winner Sarah Hunt who is in her Honours year at Newcastle University after completing a geology degree. Sarah’s interests include horse riding and all sorts of water sports. The 22 year old is also a member of the Martins Creek Volunteer Fire Brigade RFS. 21 year old Elysha Jordan is also in her final year of University at Newcastle, studying to be a primary school teacher. Elysha loves all arts and crafts and is a keen dancer. Elysha has grown up in Vacy and hopes to take her teaching skills all over the country and overseas. Trainee accountant Samantha Johnston is another in her final year of studies, completing a Bachelor of Commerce. Her hobbies include cooking, reading and gardening. An enthusiastic horse woman, Sam has represented Australia at the Paint Horse World Show. She is also involved with the local pony club and Horse Welfare Inc. Vacy’s Jessica Williams is new to the event, and is hoping to use the experience to build her confidence. The child care worker is also a part time dairy farmer, who loves campdrafting and tennis. The 19 year old is a member of the Vacy RFS and the Paterson River Pony Club.
As well as the prestige the girls are competing for great prizes including a haircut and colour at SEKT in Maitland, a trip to Dubbo for a Showgirl Deportment weekend, a year’s subscription to The Land newspaper, a cash sum, and some beautiful local roses supplied by the Williams family of Vacy. They will be eligible for next year’s zone finals. Judging will take place this Thursday afternoon, with the presentation to be made at the annual Art Show later that same night. The organisers are very grateful to the arts community for letting the showgirl announcement to be made at their event. Show President Graham Hudson is urging everyone to come and support both events. The double header evening will no doubt be a great curtain raiser to this year’s 80th Gresford Show.

The
Exciting Events For The Shire In 2012 Ivan Skaines, Dungog Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Co-ordinator said “the first new event planned is a night of Shakespeare at Tucker Park, Paterson on Sunday, 25 March at 6.30pm. The event will be a performance of Comedy of Errors, a contemporary re-imagining of the riotous comedy about mistaken identity, and is a partnership with Newcastle’s Tantrum Theatre and Livesites. Tickets are available from the Dungog Shire Visitor Information Centre on 4992 2212 and the prices are $25 full price, $20 concession/under 30, $15 for children under 18 years and $15 pp for groups of 8+” “What is happening at the Dungog Common is also very exciting with two new events this year, and the likely re-staging of the Dungog Dash or Dawdle which occurred for the first time in 2011” said Ivan. A new event for 2012 is the Common Mountain Bike Festival, which will be held at Dungog Common on Saturday, 14 and Sunday, 15 April, 2012. Organisers say that the goal of the weekend is to have a fun filled atmosphere where everyone is welcome. The main event will be an 8hr enduro on Sunday and also other activities on Saturday including a night ride, 16 inch racing, a hill climb, outdoor cinema and music. The website for the event is at http://www.commonmtbfestival.com/ Another new event which takes in Dungog Common this year is the inaugural Dungog Rotary Dirty-Du in
the last weekend in May. The Rotary Dungog Challenge is billed as 11-60-11, which means the event will include a cross country run of 11 kilometres, followed by a mountain bike ride on local roads and gravel forest roads (Stroud Rd, Main Creek Rd, Skimmings Gap Rd, Wangat Trig Rd and Chichester Dam Rd back to Dungog) and finish with another cross country run of 11 kilometres. The event will be based at Dungog Showground. The website for the race is at http://dungogchallenge.org.au/ This year the Vacy Village Carnival has been moved from March and will be held on Sunday, 16 September as past years have seen it very hot in March and there are usually a lot of other events held at that time such as the Newcastle Show. Diane Denton, Vacy Village Carnival Co-ordinator said “luckily we did decide to move the event as it is doubtful that we could have used Vacy Oval in March due to the recent wet weather. We are also working on getting dogs back to the Carnival.”

Gresford Garden Group It is known that along the Allyn and Paterson River valleys there is a wealth of horticultural knowledge and a great love of gardening. I believe that an informal Garden Group could be successful. Would there be enough interest for this group to meet throughout the year at different gardens in our community? Not perfect gardens, just gardens large and small that are loved, that have experienced joys and sorrows and that have, along with their owners, something to share. I have one of these gardens and I would like to propagate plants, know the best time to prune in this valley, find out what’s killing a couple of trees and gather information about suitable shrubs and trees to plant. I’d like to share the great successes that I’ve had and exchange plants and seedlings. I would also like to visit other gardens in our area for a few hours during different seasons.
There are plans for a Country Music Festival for Dungog in January 2013 and more information about the first meeting to stage this event is provided elsewhere in this edition.
For those interested in joining this group, an Allynbrook Autumn garden stroll has been organised for Tuesday 24th April at 10am. Morning tea will be provided. Afterwards, the owner of the garden will take us on a garden walk and talk. We shall discuss problems in individual gardens so please bring cuttings and or photographs. Before we leave we shall set a date and garden for our next meeting.
For more information on events in Dungog Shire please contact the Dungog Shire Visitor Information Centre on 4992 2212 or Ivan Skaines, Dungog Shire Council’s Economic Development & Tourism Co-ordinator on 4995 7777.
Please phone Penny on 4938 9365 if you are interested in joining this group. There will be no fees, just garden lovers getting together. Please let me know if you have any further queries or suggestions - Jane Chandler 4938 9189.

Learn Indian Cooking and then have a feast in downtown East Gresford Cook up a storm ... or is that a monsoon?... with Fiona Wright. Formerly of Gresford, Fiona has been living in Pushkar in Rajasthan for many years. An artist and hotelier, she also runs textile and culture tours across the world and will be teaching Indian cooking techniques to a few lucky people in Dungog Shire when she visits in April. The course will be run by the Diners at the last Indian Dinner newly established Dungog workshop held in Gresford Community College at the Twin Rivers Cafe in East Gresford on Thurs 19 April from 6 to 9.30pm. And if you’re not the cooking type you can still come along for a great Indian meal.
Gresford Clean Up Australia day team effort We had over twenty volunteers searching for rubbish along the verges of all roads leading into Gresford and East Gresford. The campaign which is always held the first Sunday in March is timely for us with the Gresford show commencing a few days later. I am happy to report that the amount of debris collected was almost half that collected in previous years and we attribute this to education filtering through schools and on to young adults who are thinking twice about ways to keep our picturesque environment clean and healthy. It is however interesting to note that most volunteers were over the age of sixty and there were no volunteers between the ages of thirteen and forty five. The Gresford Cleanup campaign is an initiative of the Gresford Community Group and this Group wishes to thank all volunteers for helping to make our town such a clean one. Jane Chandler, Site Co-ordinator
On the cooking side you will make a range of tasty Indian main courses, authentic chai drink, and side dishes with local meat and vegies and some divine spices. Then serve and eat the results with your fellow chefs and a few paying guests. At the end you have some new skills and recipes to take home. Don’t want to cook but want to eat? There are limited “dining only” places available so book in straight away and be treated like a Raj! – dinner guests should arrive at 8pm. Where: Twin Rivers Cafe, Park St, East Gresford Cost: $75 for chefs; $30 for dinner-only Bookings & enquiries: www.dungogcommunitycollege.org.au or phone 4992 1133

Safety focus for Easter Billy Cart Derby
A
ll the thrills but hold the spills will be the motto for this year’s Gresford Billy Cart Derby on Saturday 7 April 2012 The competition is often fierce and sometimes farce as the inventiveness of the cart designers is put to the test. Drivers can be as young as eight or as old as Grandad. The carts can range from the classy to the kooky but regardless of style this year there’s an extra condition – safety. The design specifications for carts have been updated and for competitors the rule will be “No safety gear – No ride.” Ken Chandler, spokesperson for the organising committee, said “The decision to focus on safety this year has been prompted by recent tragic car accidents involving young people in our region. It is important to promote road safety at all levels including a fun event like this.” “Each year we make donations from the proceeds of the day and this year we will be supporting local community groups and two great road safety programs ROADwhyz and DRIVE2SURVIVE. Both these programs, which operate in the Hunter region, have the runs on the board when it comes to reducing young people becoming road trauma statistics and we would like to assist their good work.” It’s not too late for inventive kids and adults to build their own cart. Entries close on the day but carts have to follow the rules: restrictions on wheel sizes and the all important braking system to keep the racing both safe and fair. Visitors can also enjoy the stalls run by local community groups, place a bet on the cowpat lotto, visit the local gallery, eat up at the barbecue, pick up a bargain at one of the many stalls. And of course watch all the action. Two carts, the ‘Pink Pig’ and the ‘Cow’, have an ancient rivalry and it’s rumoured this year the ‘Widow Maker’ will enter the gruelling tag team race. Last year crowds topped 2000 and 37 carts registered with more than 91 entries – a lot of the carts being used in multiple races by different family members. Racing starts at 9am and runs till lunchtime. For design rules, entry forms and event enquiries, visit the website www.gresfordbillycartderby.wordpress.com or call Ken Chandler on 4938 9189.
A
t last year’s Billy Cart Derby when NSW Minister for Major Events, George Souris, lined up against the Federal Member for Paterson Bob Baldwin the future of Gresford’s main street was at stake. The race caller Paul Dooley set the challenge for the loser of the race to fix the road... so the multi-milllion dollar bet was on. George Souris won the race and later Bob Baldwin tweeted about the need for funding to fix the road. Road safety is not just about safe driving but also about safe roads. We are all waiting for a major road funding announcement from Bob Baldwin this Easter... but then again he could still get the road fixed in the next 4 weeks. How about it Bob?
Safety barriers needed For quite a few years now Coates Hire have donated safety barriers to use on the day but this year, due to high demand, they are unsure of availability. If anyone has access to safety barriers or mulch hay bales please contact Ken Chandler Ph 4938 9189

The Taylor method for treating Madeira Vine
After becoming frustrated with the normal scrape and paint technique, using a vegetable peeler or a knife to do the scraping, one of my friends, Geoff Taylor suggested that a wire brush could provide a suitable alternative tool for achieving the required stem exposure. We have now used this technique over the past year with excellent results. The wire brush is used to abrade the surface layer from one (smaller diameter vines), or several, lengths of vine (about 20cm each) – each section requires only (say) 5 strokes with the wire brush. The 1:1 glyphosate water herbicide is then squirted/sprayed onto the exposed surfaces (using, for example, a 500ml spray bottle). This technique has the advantages of: • speed • safety; no sharp edge (knife or scraper) • more efficient exposure of the vine to the herbicide • can be used for any diameter of vine (very fine vines can be broken, but the herbicide is taken up by the lower section, and there are no tubers on the top section of the fine vines) An option for improvement would be to incorporate a pad wipe system into a wire brush, so that one hand can hold the vines while the other abrades the stems and applies the herbicide. We are currently trialling this technique on an infestation of morning glory. - Peter Scaife

Gresford Vacy Football Club Inc SUCCESSFUL SIGN-UP
MEET & GREET March 7th
Gresford Vacy has been successful in attracting new members to the club but still has room for more. A campaign, offering free registration to 6 and 7 year olds, has resulted in at least two new teams at the grass roots level. (There’s a great opportunity here for a local business to sponsor a couple of kid’s teams.)
The first “training session” will be the “Meet & Greet” sausage sizzle at the Gresford Sporting Complex on Wednesday 7th March. Starting at 5pm. The session includes team placement, training balls, Coach & Manager appointments, clothes orders and training locations. Free sausage sizzle and cordial for the kids. Come along and be part of your team. Registrations will still be accepted at the Meet & Greet and payment of registration fees will be accepted at the canteen.
However, there are vacancies in some teams to bring them up to full strength and anybody still considering playing in the 2012 season should contact the Registrar – Tammy Crouch on 4938 9101 ELECTRONIC REGISTRATION after hours and get a registration form. “JAMES THEATRE STAKES” GVFC has accepted the challenge from the Dungog Lions Club and is entering a crack team to compete in the “JT Stakes”. There’s a rumour that we’re being co-sponsored by Dungog Mayor, Harold Johnston. He’s obviously been given a good tip. Only players displaying exception fitness and commitment have been selected. Those with expertise in multiple sporting disciplines were highly sort after to contest the eight different games in this very serious “social” sporting event. Training for the event has been rigorous and there is little doubt that our team, drawn largely from our All-Age Women’s and Men’s Q div sides, will be victorious in, at least, the mini-soccer component of the event. Good luck.

Digital Projection For James Theatre The owner of the theatre, Dungog Shire Council, has voted to borrow $100,000 to fund the purchase of digital projection equipment. This breakthrough means hopes are high that three separate grant applications for vital renovations to the Theatre will bear fruit in the near future. A delighted Lisa Connors, Chair of the ‘Friends of the James Theatre’, said “With the advent of the digital age in cinema, the James Theatre had been facing the same dilemma as many independent cinemas, the huge expense associated with going digital. Now we can see a clear way ahead to an exciting future.” Successful tenderer Associated Sound Newcastle Pty Ltd is to install the equipment, expected to be fully operational by April. To supplement grant monies, Dungog community is pulling together to raise money for the renovations through the JT Stakes, a fun country sporting event.

Tourism businesses across Australia can apply for grants of up to $100,000 to develop and refresh their products. Applications will be closing on 19 April 2012 for the current round of the T-QUAL Grants - Tourism Quality Projects program.

T-QUAL Grants – is designed to spur private investment in tourism experiences, from eco-cabins and farm stays to wine trails and interactive displays. Grants can also be awarded to help build the online capacity of tourism providers and address labour and skills shortages. Unlike the larger Strategic Tourism Investment Grants worth up to $1 million each, T-QUAL Grants – Tourism Quality Projects is targeted at smaller locally based projects. More information is at www.ret.gov. au/tqual and local tourism businesses are encouraged to contact Ivan Skaines, Dungog Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Co-ordinator, to discuss possible projects applicable to this grant scheme, as well as ideas and proposals.

Dungog Council can provide a garbage collection service including additional bins, and the Dungog Shire Visitor Information Centre can help promote events by including details on the Events Calendar and on various websites. Meeting with Hunter New England Health
Meeting held Thursday 9/2/12 at Maitland Hospital between HNE Health representatives and Gresford Community Group delegates. The meeting commenced with acknowledgement that the discussions would be reported to the wider Gresford community. It was acknowledged by HNE Health that the communication to the Gresford community regarding the decision to close the Gresford Community Health Centre had not been optimum. The purpose of the meeting was to clarify the reasons for the closure, explore the consequences for the community and to identify HNE Health strategies for maintaining and facilitating community access to Community Health Services. HNE Health explained that a review of health service access statistics had shown that few people have been referred or sought access to the various Community Health Services (such as those provided by Community Health Dieticians, Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, Women’s Health Nurse, etc). It was also stated that the decreasing number of births and the changed Child and Family (Baby Health)
service provision strategy (ie home visits) meant the Gresford CHC was now under used. The inability to recruit and retain a doctor was another reason that the CHC was under used. The lack of staff working from the GCHC was seen as further increasing the OH&S risks (ie isolation) for the Community Nurse when using the Centre for administration purposes.
closure of the GCHC having a severe impact on the ability to attract a visiting or outreach medical service. Ms Patricks advised that any medical provider intending to establish a medical practice would have access to Federal grants and assistance from the Rural Division of GPs.
Outcomes of the meeting:
• HNE Health agreed to submit to The Gresford News and other media outlets each month health related articles and to promote the various local Community Health Services. • HNE Health will update directories with the correct contact information (eg GCG delegates pointed out that many local phone directories). people no longer know what range of services are provided by HNE Health nor • HNE Health offered to lobby for know that there is no fee payable. It was increased community transport if the current Dungog based service provider also stated that it was to be expected requires assistance and to explore the that referrals would be low given that option to use Heath transport vehicles. there was no doctor encouraging their • HNE Health to seek advice re having a patients to access the free CH services. Gresford delegate attend the Dungog Many people were not aware that a Shire Health Forum (or Local Health doctor’s referral was not necessary for many CH services. It was also stated that Advisory Committee). • HNE Health agreed to support a future many local people do not have ease of access to transport to either Maitland or grant application for a medical service (eg Medicare Local) and to have Dungog (given that there is no public transport available except the school bus). Community Health attached if service Concern was also expressed about the demand is established. HNE Health stressed that the Community Nurse would continue to provide home nursing and that people from Gresford would still be able to access other CH Services located in Maitland or Dungog.

Learning Permaculture at Allyn River Farm
Allyn River Permaculture Farm is a 7.5ha property established using permaculture (permanent agriculture) principles by registered architect & landscape designer Peter Brecknock. Peter is passionate about practical permaculture and since 2005 he has been working as a permaculture design consultant and teacher. For him the permaculture principles can be equally applied to urban gardens and rural properties. “It’s about consciously designing productive systems that have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. Being observant and thoughtful to work with nature rather than against it.” Peter explained “Permaculture is both a practice and a philosophy that challenges its practitioners to continually evolve while being consistent with its Ethics of caring for the earth (rebuilding the natural capital that provides for us) caring for people (nurturing the self, kin and community) and fair share (redistributing surplus and setting limits to consumption and reproduction)” For a number of years Peter has opened up his property for field days and courses. “This year I’m offering a new workshop format to make it more convenient for people. There will be an ‘Introduction to Permaculture’ workshop run on Saturdays Apr 21, June 9, July 21, Aug 25, Sep 22, Oct 20 and Nov 17. Once this introduction is completed people can

choose any number of stand alone workshops that will run on Sundays. These can be mixed and matched to suit any particular interests.” The Sunday workshops are: Garden & Farm Design, (Aug 26) introducing the design processes, zone and sector analysis and how to analyse site data like aerial photos, topo data, survey and environmental inputs. Fruit & Vegetable Growing, (April 22, Sep 23) constructing no-dig and raised bed gardens, soil properties and development of growing mediums. Discuss propagation and growing techniques, companion planting, crop rotation and natural disease and pest control. Permaculture Construction, (June 10, Oct 21) understanding land form (topography), to optimise water harvesting devices and an introduction to basic surveying techniques for earthworks and the layout of access, fencing, tree planting and water harvesting devices. Soils & Composting, (July 22, Nov 18) will examine soil types and qualities, how to adjust natural properties for optimum growing conditions, understanding pH, nutrient uptake, soil texture and water holding capacities. Composting techniques, particular the Berkeley method of hot composting together with the preparation of compost teas. Call Peter to find out more abut the courses. ART Congratulations to Eric Werkhoven who won the Figurative Sculpture Prize at Maitland Show 2012. Eric’s work ATHLETE is made from autoclaved aerated cement and adhesive cement. Eric says about his sculpture “The influence of my Indonesian roots and African upbringing, including religious Javanese themes are integral to my sculptures and drawings. The works are often vivid and colourful, depicting many cavorting, mythical beasts and human creatures. Athlete - captures motion and the intimate unity of beasts and man that has lasted through the ages to still influence the imagination.”

Platypus Rescue 580gms. Lucky little Matthew is giving the baby a cuddle before he was taken by the wildlife volunteer. We rang Hunter wildlife rescue on 0418 628 483 and they came up and collected him. He was in bad shape being so young and because of the amount of ticks he had (wildlife rescue later counted 258 – cattle ticks, paralis ticksand normal grass ticks) He will have to be bottle feed and closely looked after but in a couple of months time they will release him back into the Allyn river close to where we found him. What to do when you find sick or injured wildlife: • place in a small box or pillowcase. • place in a small quiet, warm location. • do not feed. Contact 0418 628 483

Social Golf
The inaugural Gresford Bowls Sports & Recreation Clubs Social Golf Event held on the 5th February was a resounding success. With fears of a first round washout, the small but enthusiastic group disposed of their wet weather gear and attacked the somewhat damp but playable Royal Paterson Golf Course. The competition was light hearted but scores were double checked for accuracy, with the Gong going to Will Osmond with a well hit 38 off the stick. As our group played under the Royal Paterson “RAFFERTIES RULES” Will got to tee off first at the tenth hole and pay for the first round. Good on ya Will. The next round is planned for the 4th March and the numbers are already growing, so come on down for a bash around the Royal Paterson with like minded Ball Bashers.
If you would like to become a wildlife member you can get involved in many ways from rescuing injured, orphaned or distressed wildlife to sewing/knitting pouches, liners or wraps for orphaned wildlife, farming live foods, education or answering the emergency hotline.
