resford Amateur Performing Society ‘s 2012 production, Carrion up the Nyall, came to a successful conclusion on 29th September, after five energetic performances. A large matinee audience on 16th September gave the play a warm reception, and two subsequent weekends saw the little-known story of the ‘real’ Cleopatra presented to appreciative audiences. Paul Wilson, Lyndell Osmond and Doll Watson kicked off the evening performances with some old karaoke favourites that were well-received. ...read more inside

Letters Subsidy available for satellite phones I have recently bought a satellite phone which I see as good insurance as I am often in areas with no reception. I thought it would be of interest to larger farm owners in our area as there are many areas outside of normal telstra coverage and this satellite phone should work anywhere you can see the sky.

For homes that do not receive mobile reception the Govt is now subsidising by 85% the purchase price of the phones. I paid $135 for the one I bought.

New handset technology and new stationery satellites covering Australia have increased the technical reliability and decreased the cost of the service.

Open To All Peace and sanctuary is now possible at any time in Paterson.

St Paul’s Church is now open every working day for anyone wanting prayer and a time of quiet.

It is the third church in the Anglican Parish of Gresford Paterson to be left unlocked during the day: St Anne’s at Gresford and St John’s at Lostock have been kept open for many years.

Fr Stephen, rector of the parish, said the church offers a refuge to everyone. ‘All we ask is that you respect it as the house of God.’ He said an open church demonstrates an openness of spirit, reflecting God’s acceptance and generosity of everyone and anyone.

‘A church is not only a sacred place where regular worship is held.

‘It should never be just kept for Sunday churchgoers or seen to be reserved for Anglicans only but be open to all as a sign of God’s inclusiveness.’

The church, built in 1845, is the oldest public building in active use in Paterson.

Vacy, Glen William and Paterson. The small staff of Gresford Public school appeared undaunted by the vast numbers of visiting students and parents from other schools. Once the students were shown to their workshops by the delegated prefects of Gresford and commenced being creative, you could hear a pin drop (well except for the wind) - the focus and level of attention was a sight to behold.

To feed the masses the untiring team of Gresford Canteen volunteers worked very hard cutting up fruit and bagging all those lunches. A big thank you to Dotti Hilliard and Margie Dent. Dotti dished up a laden buffet table of goodies that was immensely appreciated by the talented workshop leaders. Help like this from the community is so important to the school.

n Thursday 6th September, Gresford Public School swelled from its usual 56 students to 160, all of them there to enjoy the Biannual Create Art Carnival. Even though the wind blew its best, participants managed to enjoy art workshops in the gardens of the pretty school as well as inside.

To assist with the cost of staging this event the school acknowledges the generous support of Xstrata Coal. Money raised by the Art Carnival will be spent on Creative Arts and Literacy over the next two years.

Workshops on offer were claymation, drama, manga to the max, printmaking, 3D sculpture, cluey with clay, painting with found objects, metamorphosis drawing mania, and pocket rockit felting. Bet that list makes you wish you could’ve come!

Lovebites program

Anyone for Tennis?

It’s time to dust off the tennis racquets and have some fun and exercise! After a winter break and the weather warming up we are getting ready to commence the spring summer competition tennis on Tuesday nights again from 7:30 to 9:30pm. The format will be team competition with teams that consist of 2 ladies and 2 men. We are asking for nominations from either individuals who want to play but cannot get a team or teams that are already organised. If you are not sure come along to our social tennis night (tennis is free) and BBQ on Tuesday, 2nd October, 2012 at 7:30pm.

The tennis committee have been busy with a few projects this year including drinks stall at Gresford Billy Cart Derby, applying for a grant in conjunction with Gresford Park Trust for court resurfacing and delivering the Active After Schools Also our volunteer coaches are ready for program (tennis) at Gresford Public School junior coaching. We have some exciting news that Gresford has been chosen to be in Terms 1 & 2. At the school we had the most enjoyable time introducing the a pilot site for MLC Tennis Hotshots Community Play Pilot Program. This is a students to tennis based skills and fun games. The children showed some fun program for children aged 5 to 12 amazing skills and talent in these activities years ( primary school ) with games and and are to be congratulated on their great tennis skills encouraged. JUNIOR TENNIS COACHING Join in the fun and learn a new game Coaching for primary to high school students every Friday afternoon

Lower Hunter Sexual Assault Service and other services from across the area including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Carrie’s Place, Singleton Youth Venue, Oasis, Samaritans and more, facilitated two days of the Lovebites Program at Dungog High School on 3 and 4 September, involving approximately 100 students.

The Lovebites program aims to educate young people about respectful relationships and reduce the incidence of violence and sexual assault in the community.

Two sessions ran throughout the day, one on domestic violence and the other on sexual assault and consent. These were followed by an afternoon workshop creating art or music highlighting some of their learning. Some music and artwork will be used in a community campaign to combat the issues.

The Dungog High School students developed two radio advertisements which will be aired on Radio Dungog in the lead up to White Ribbon Day. The artwork developed by the students will be displayed at the school and one piece will be chosen to be turned into a professional poster that will be displayed at schools throughout the region.

Another successful day for Vacy Carnival The Vacy Village Country Carnival was held on a sparkling day with the crowds starting to build early in the day. The Crowds were up on last year and every community group had a very successful day.

The Novice races were a great hit with approx. 50 novice dogs booked in to run although only 34 were registered previously, people just brought their Jack Russells and Dachshunds to compete on the day.

There were several new stallholders present and all were very surprised at the size of the fair to the size of the village. The school grounds were buzzing this year to the sounds of children enjoying the games, sand paintings, jumping castle and Ruby the clown. The old favourites were back for 2012 with the camels and ponies doing a roaring

trade. The artists in the hall were kept busy answering questions about their craft and the Bush poets recited their poems in the Hall grounds.

Everyone had a very enjoyable day with praise going to the organizers and volunteers. I personally would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers, my committee, people who gave to the garage sale, suppliers of the equipment and the generous people who gave to our huge raffle, chocolate wheel and chook raffle.

Community feature Hard ground, horrid westerly winds and long stretches without rain regularly experienced in the Gresford area might be enough to test even the most avid green thumbs but the tough conditions don’t deter a group of keen gardeners from the district. Every month since May about 30 gardeners – from young mothers to the more senior members of the community - have gathered at different properties to talk all things gardening.

“Penny Kater and I had been talking about having a garden group for about two years and then one day we said ‘let’s just do it’,” group co-founder Jane Chandler said. “Initially we called it Gresford Garden Group but that first meeting in May attracted people from Paterson up to the Upper Allyn. “To be fair to all, we immediately changed the name to Paterson Allyn Garden Group.”

Penny said the group was definitely not about competition-style gardening. “We really just meet to discuss problems; to tell each other about our successes and failures,” she said.

The inaugural meeting explored the garden of Jane and Ken Chandler at their Gresford property Mullenroo.

Subsequent gardens have belonged to Jane Hicks, of Paterson, Rod and Penny Kater, of Allynbrook, and, most recently, Bev Lawrie, of Tyraman Retreat.

Bev has planted about 20,000 trees and shrubs over the past 20 years and not one of them has cost her more than $5.

The October meeting will be at the Torryburn property of Chris and Julia St Clair and the following month the group will visit the garden of Julia and Chris Wokes at Paterson.

We can look forward to another epic exhibition, which will feature painting, sculpture, installation, works on paper and photography. This year Sydney artist Kathrin Longhurst, who was a Finalist in the Sulman Prize at New South Wales Art Gallery 2012, will join the Hunter Valley exhibiting artists.

Last September 2011 the exhibition Preparation For The Final journey was held at Newcastle Art Space Gallery, seven of our local artists joined Newcastle artists to face the challenge of creating their chosen burial receptacle – coffin, casket, urn, shroud, to carry them into the hereafter or of making a conceptual work relating to death. Ethereal and provocative the final artworks were stunning, including a space rocket by Michael Garth and a three metre drift wood boat by Pam Sinnott.

Jill Stowell, Newcastle Herald Art Critic, wrote “This has been a brave and stimulating project, well worth doing.”

The show was hailed as the best Newcastle group exhibition for the year.

Again during 11 – 23 October 2012 twenty artists have been invited by Eric and Robyn Werkhoven to step outside their comfort zone and meet yet another provocative and confronting thematic exhibition – A Fine Line Between Pleasure and Pain, the subject that has been studied and debated by philosophers, artists and mankind throughout history.

Gresford Gallery News Laura Jefferson’s sculpture and ceramic exhibition was a fantastic success, with over 40 Gresfordians enjoying Laura’s creativity, Louise Jefferson’s wonderful food and Camyr Allyn wine. A big thank you to all those who attended and especially those who now own a work by Laura! Many major pieces were sold and Laura’s quirky small works walked out the door! And as ever a big thank you to John and Judy Evers for their generous donation of Camyr Allyn Sparkling Rose, Shiraz and Merlot, beautiful local wine adding to the local flavour of the gallery!

Gresford Gallery is an initiative of the Gresford Community Group whose ongoing support makes the space possible.

Educating Alice

– Alice Steinbach

This delightful book by the energetic and inquisitive Steinbach takes us from cooking lessons at the Paris Ritz, to learning sheep-dog commands on a farm north of Glasgow, via lessons in Japanese culture; writing in Prague and gardening in the South of France. She also explores Jane Austen and Art and Architecture in Havana.

The author seems never to have lost her childhood desire to learn, which gives the reader a vicarious entry into some fascinating situations. As well as describing the mechanics of what she learns, she describes her surroundings evocatively and subjectively, without letting her own consciousness get too much in the way. Her love of travel and writing, and her desire to share her experiences, launched her into freelance work, after winning a Pulitzer Prize for her work at the Baltimore Sun. Steinbach prefaces her book with a line from Basho, the Japanese haiku master – To learn of the pine, go to the pine – which sums up beautifully her own quest to go to the sources and places of knowledge. The episodic nature allows the reader to dip into the various segments at will, but the whole text is rewarding and enlightening.

Eucalypts Field Trip 3 November Registrations are still open if you are interested in taking an unique opportunity to see at first hand otherwise-inaccessible private and Crown land and learn how farming and grazing practices over the centuries – from Aboriginal to modern – have impacted on tree growth, in particular native varieties of eucalypt.

Cameron Archer, principal of Tocal College, is leading a day-long field trip through high-country cattle pastures and eucalypt forests west of Carrabolla to discover the impact of land use on native vegetation. The event is an initiative of the Broughton Beef Syndicate, with all funds raised going to support the ministry of the Anglican Church of Gresford Paterson.

The field trip travels in convoy with intermittent breaks at significant points. It starts on the foreshores of Lostock Dam takes in Carrabolla, Carrowbrook, the western foreshores of Lake Saint Clair and Reedy Creek, and ends at Gresford around 5pm.

The route is accessible to SUVs with high ground clearance such as a Land Cruiser, Pajero and equivalent vehicles. A Subaru Outback, for example, would not be appropriate for the terrain. As the route is prone to wet weather, participants need to register at gresfordparish@bigpond.com by no later than 31 October. A decision whether or not to proceed will be taken on 1 November, and all registrants will be advised by email of the decision that evening.

The cost is $50/person; pay on arrival at Lostock Dam, and BYO food, binoculars and a chair. Departure is 10am sharp.

Paterson Pluckestra - Learn Ukulele in Paterson You could be forgiven for thinking that ukuleles are taking over the world. Many people, (especially those over 50ish) are finding that the ukulele is the answer to their musicality prayers. With just a little help they find they CAN play music! For many it is a revelation, to be able to play music, and to find the camaraderie and comedy that comes with opening up to the joy of playing music with others.

Mark has returned recently from the US and Canada where he has been undertaking professional ukulele teacher training (true! there is such a thing!), and during that time some of the locals gathered at the Paterson Tavern under the name of the Paterson Pluckers.

The ukulele revolution struck Newcastle in late 2009 and has expanded to Port Stephens, Tea Gardens, Lake Macquarie and Maitland. About 150 people every week play in ‘ukestras’ in the Lower Hunter, joining together to learn ukulele and enjoy singing and playing together.

The Ukastle Ukestra (the performing name of anyone who joins in) has performed at festivals in Wallsend, Melbourne, Brisbane, Maitland and Hawaii.

These locals will form the core of the Paterson Pluckestra. Each week they will gather at the Paterson Tavern to learn new songs and new ukulele techniques from Mark. Importantly, people also come together to socialise, and sing and play songs that they already know and love.

The Paterson Pluckestra will meet at the Paterson Tavern each Monday, from 5:45-7:45pm, starting on Monday 17 September. Casual payments are $15 for the two hours, or $13.50 if paid ten in advance. The play’s dilemmas were resolved neatly with the switching of identities and tweaking of time – with the old ‘airhead’ Cleo Tony Schultz was larger-than-life as becoming the editor of a racy women’s Cleopatra’s obsequious astrologer, magazine named after herself, and Linea, Nostrildumbass, and Donna Graham and the forceful archaeologist, becoming the Dotti Hilliard were very decorative as the Cleopatra we always thought we had. not-so-virtuous Vestal Virgins. Professor Clifford Edge, played by the ebullient Kel Merriman, and Linea Strata - Sharon Lawrence in dazzling form – also found a strange monument, known as Obeliscus Dungogis, which provided a portal into the past, and this brought them into Cleopatra’s court, where sisterly rivalry was being vigorously pursued by Cleopatra and her twin sister Calumnia.

Once again, the cast and crew expressed their appreciation of the resounding audience support, which makes GAPS a worthwhile and entertaining community enterprise. GAPS will carry on performing, as long as the audiences keep on coming.

The kitchen and bar staff worked tirelessly – bar facilities having been graciously provided by the Gresford Bowling Club. Community members also volunteered in the time-consuming task of food preparation.

Father and son technicians, Ross and Rohan Staines, worked behind the scenes to provide light and sound in a seamless manner, while stage hands Briane Merriman and Malcolm Watson effectively led the cast in handling the props and scene changes. Sharon Lawrence brought her eclectic knowledge of music to the choice of songs, and Donna Graham, with Lu McQilliam’s assistance, provided the choreography and led the dancers through their lively paces. Lyndell Saxby sourced the wonderful costumes, which were adapted as necessary by Denise and Coleen, and Rosita Richardson was energetic in pursuing publicity.

q Gresford District Historical Society r Max Oskar Theodore Groth

You will recall that last month we introduced Max Groth, the Danish seafarer and rabbit trapper from Allynbrook. This story is set in the war time 1940’s and as Max was an illegal immigrant he especially wished to maintain a low profile and to keep his identity secret. This state of affairs couldn’t last however. Everyone had to have a name and Max was given a bush christening at Ellen Bird’s Allynbrook wine bar.

War time rationing meant that the families on the Allyn and Paterson rivers relied heavily on the general stores in Gresford for their needs. These families were always very pleased to see Wal Everett (who at that time) was the representative from Knight’s General store. Wal would make his way up each valley once a fortnight on an ambling grey horse taking orders for food, clothes, hardware to the extent of the ration coupons his customers had available. On his return to Knight’s store these orders would be made up and delivered. These journeys took two days

with Wal staying overnight with a family at the head of each river. Needless to say Ellen Bird’s wine bar was a welcome stop on his travels in the Allyn valley.

As you will read in the poem below, Wal officiated at the bush christening.

A “foreign” sounding name was necessary for Max and Wal may have drawn inspiration from the Newcastle printing firm of Pogonoski and Sons whose name appeared on the bottom of his order books.

And now we can recount the story of “Pogonski’s Christening” as set down in verse by John Boydell or Morris Bird or perhaps both! Note; the Les and Aub referred to in the poem were locals, (Les and Aub Hancock) who propped up the bar and the reference to SP in the final paragraph is to “starting price” book making. This “service” may or may not have been available at the wine bar!

A reminder: It is YOUR stories of characters, identities and events that add the human factor to our history and we desperately need to preserve them. So, please pick up your biro, write them down and send them in to the Gresford District Historical Society Inc P.O. Box 88 East Gresford. As an incentive we will give a $10 “bounty” for every one we publish in the Gresford News.

gresford CWA News Branch makes History For the first time in 76 years Gresford Branch have given an Honorary Membership to a very worthy male member of our community Ron Francis who has been a tower of strength to our CWA. Since he and member Marcia moved to the Gresford District we have relied on Ron, particularly at Show time. Ron says he is more than happy to lend a hand when needed, he is supportive of what CWA do. The Honorary Memberships issued this year are a celebration of 90 years of CWA of NSW.

Group Agriculture and Environment Day Held at Gresford. Retired Vet, Ted Finnie spoke about the Devil Ark program. Barrington Tops is the ideal climate for Tasmanian Devils. James Packer has set aside 500 acres for Devil Ark. Tasmanian Devils are mainly carrion eaters. That is they are meat lovers, eating animals that have died, they also eat Curl Grubs. They are easy to handle. They were originally in Australia and may have still lived about 300 years ago at Barrington Tops. They do not survive with dingoes. Gaye Drady spoke on our Flora and Fauna study for the year. Apples, the Emu and the Emu Bush.

Book Club will be held Saturday, 13th October at 3pm. Book “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac will be discussed.

Show and Shine at Gresford Community Market The Show & Shine on Sunday 16 September was attended by Maitland Classic Motor Assoc., Upper Hunter motor Assoc., Newcastle Restored Vehicle Club, Singleton Classic Car Club, 48 - 78 Holden Car Club, Newcastle Jaguar Car Club, Newcastle Harley Owners Club, Newcastle Triumph car Club and Newcastle Veteran Vehicle Car Club with approximately 70 vehicles on display. The day started with an early thick fog but cleared to be the most perfect day for a drive and park up in a cow paddock in Gresford.

This was the third Annual Gresford Community Markets Show & Shine and is now a much anticipated event on our Club’s events calendar. We hope that this unique event continues well into the future.

The fourth Tocal Australian Stock Horse Sale will be held at Tocal College on Sunday 4 November 2012. “Staff and students have put in a lot of work to prepare horses for our annual sale and we have a great offering for the 2012 sale,” Tocal Principal, Cameron Archer said. “There has already been strong interest from prospective buyers and we are expecting good results again this year.”

Tocal pool is now open and available for community use.

Arrangements are that community use is by season ticket only.

Applications for season tickets are available from Tocal College Office and Paterson Post, Office, and can be downloaded from www.tocal.com Members of the Tocal pool can also take guests who use the pool on a pay as you go basis. The pool services people living in the Paterson valley including Largs and Bolwarra.

The great majority of the horses listed have been bred and trained at Tocal. There will also be a small number of horses available from local breeders who have been involved with the College Horse Husbandry program. Obviously, we are delighted with the great support we have from other Stock Horse breeders in the region and we appreciate their support for the event.

Tocal pool is an important community resource and Tocal Agricultural Centre works to ensure it is accessible and available to the community. The pool is unsupervised and the annual membership fees reflect that it is not supervised nor does it have a canteen or other services. Comparisons are made with other district pools each year when setting the fees. Members of the pool need to keep their tickets as college staff check usage from time to time.

This year there will be over 20 Horses bred and trained on Tocal and about 15 horses from other vendors. The catalogue will be available soon on www.tocal.com “We take great care to ensure the horses we sell are quality animals both in terms of breeding, temperament and ability,” Dr Archer said. “This way we know that those who buy a Tocal bred Stock Horse will be more than happy with their purchase. We have had great feedback about the quality of the horses that were sold at our previous sales,” he said.

A catalogue for the sale will be available shortly and the details of each horse will be recorded in this. A parade of the horses, ridden by Tocal students and staff will be held at 9.00am on the day of the sale with the sale commencing at 1.00pm.

The pool was first opened in 1979 and has been in continuous use ever since. It is an important part of the social fabric of the local community. ‘The Tocal Pool provides an important between the College and the community.’ Dr Cameron Archer, Tocal Director said. ‘It is wonderful to see the facility used by local schools and families. Without the community use it would not be possible to operate the pool.’

Closed circuit TV monitoring has been put in place to improve security on the pool and campus.

Gresford Vacy Football Club Inc Season’s End With only the U14’s reaching the Final Round of the Inter-district Competition the season ended on a flat note. Most of our teams were put in higher grades for 2012 as a result of their 2010/11 successes. It was not surprising that we finished further down the ladder for this season. It’ll toughen us up for 2013.

The U14’s had a remarkable season and finished, undefeated, on the top of the ladder as Minor Premiers. Unfortunately the team was dogged by illness and was defeated in the first semi-final and knocked out of the comp in the Final. A bitter result for a team which had previously had such a great season.

They’ll be back and twice as keen in 2013.

Presentation Day and AGM Perfect weather and happy kids was an appropriate way to officially end the 2012 season.

Club patrons, Cr Glenn Wall and Mr Peter Doyle, officiated at the AGM where a Committee of 20 volunteers was easily formed to continue the development of the Club.

Glenn commended the Club for its

professional management and for continuing to offer the local communities the opportunity to participate in sport.

Everybody who played received a trophy as recognition of their season with GVFC and by the smiles on the faces of the new Under 6’s and Under 7’s these trophies are obviously pretty special.

Presentation Day concluded with the BBQ Luncheon and entertainment for the kids.

Club President, Cyril Redhouse, acknowledged the long term valuable contributions of retiring Vice President, Mick O’Sullivan, and Canteen Manager, Heather Williams, who after four seasons of running the canteen, stepped down to Assistant Manager for 2012 before retiring mid-season. Heather has now volunteered to be Gear Steward.

Year 7 and above are invited to register in the Premier, Competitive or Social/Mixed grade and compete for great prize money.

Two 15 minute halves will be played, with unlimited interchanges, on a one third size field to a modified set of rules.

Competition will be over 12 weeks starting in November and breaking for 4 weeks over Christmas.

There were a couple of trade stands with 1950’s attire & accessories being sold as well as a tattoo studio doing the odd job.

The 2 bands entertaining the crowds throughout the event were Bones Jones & The Skeletones playing in the afternoon and The Flattrakkers taking us into the night. Punters enjoyed sausage sandwiches with snags sourced by Gresford Quality Meats.

Street Machine Magazine sent up a photographer and a reporter to cover the event to be put into their annual hotrod issue due out on the stands later in the year.

The Devils Australia would like to thank the trustees for trusting us to hold the event on there showground (it was a big ask to let us rip up some ground), the Beatty Hotel, the Bowling Club, Gresford Meats and the Local supermarket. It’s really nice when you can walk into a venue and are met by friendly, helpful people.

The Devils have great feed back from the people that attended and cant wait to hold the event next year.
