he Gresford NSW website went live in February 2012 and one year on is proving to be a site that is regularly used to find out what’s happening and what’s available in the region. It is being accessed mostly within Australia but there are visits from the UK, Europe and North America. It is interesting that almost a quarter of the visits are from mobiles or tablets. The website is an initiative of the Gresford Community Group to support local businesses and community groups and promote the region.

Letters Where was the Allynbrook wine bar?

After the Allynbrook wine bar stories appeared in the ‘Our Stories’ historical feature we have had a few people asking where the wine bar was located. Some thought it may have been the building on the corner of Allyn River Rd and Cross Keys Rd. We asked Allan Hancock for the answer.

Hello Brian, The Allynbrook wine bar was directly opposite 722 Allyn River Rd. The building is now a private home, but is immediately recognizable from the (early) photo used in the article published in the Gresford News. It is however somewhat screened from the road by a high fence. The “Cross Keys” Hotel which operated for many years is some 4 kilometers further North on the Allyn River Rd at the junction of Cross Keys road and Allyn River Rd. An early photo and history of this hotel is contained in the 2013 Historical Society calendar under “November”. Don’t confuse it with the “Cross Roads” hotel which operated at West Gresford till it was burnt down in 1922. See “December” in the 2013 Historical calendar for more information. For many years Allynbrook was indeed a haven for thirsty travellers with both establishments operating concurrently!

Layla’s Story

– Vanessa Gorman

This book encompasses the making of a documentary about the death of a newborn child. Gorman, as a producer of Australian Story, was well-placed to record what she expected would be the birth of a much-anticipated baby, but in her own words, As Cathy filmed on the first day of Layla’s death, it occurred to me fleetingly that the documentary had gone awry. But I was glad she was there to record the moment – I dimly understood that these images would become our memories of Layla’s brief physical time on earth.

Gorman’s decision to continue with the documentary seems to have been influenced by her professional sense of herself as a ‘witness’, but it also fits with her extraordinary frankness about her own life, and the fragile relationship that gave rise to baby Layla. Gorman does not hold back in any sense, creating an emotional, sexual and spiritual background for the conception of the child. This is a daunting book in many ways, but a very courageous one.

ARE YOU READY?

Gresford is very excited to be supporting our current Showgirl Samantha Johnston through to the Zone 5 final in early March 2013.

Sam will play an important role in this year’s show, including helping to judge the first ever Gresford Junior Showgirl Competition.

Clean Up Gresford

Organisers are looking for local girls aged 12-15 with great personalities and a genuine interest in the community and our show. It’s hoped by participating in this event, more local girls will come forward in the future to take part in the senior event.

Entries are open until the Saturday morning of the show with the judging to occur prior to the Grand Parade.

ANZAC DAY commemorative service Thursday 25th April Gresford R.S.L. Sub-Branch

Paterson The ANZAC Dawn march commences from Stockers and Partridge Garage, Sloan Street Paterson at 5.30am. and proceeds to the War Memorial for the Commemoration Service, with a wreath and book laying ceremony. After the service there will be a traditional breakfast held at the Paterson Tavern, with a gold coin donation much appreciated-all welcome.

Gresford The ANZAC Day march commences from Everett’s Garage Durham road Gresford at 10.30am., marching down Durham Rd, to the Cenotaph, on Parks Street, for the Commemoration Service, with a wreath and book laying ceremony -all welcome.

Following this, an ANZAC Day luncheon will take place in the School of Art’s supper and RSL rooms, concluding with short addresses, where it is customary for the attending RAAF Officer to render a short speech.

Mr Redhouse said “Of the twelve teams that played in this six-a-side competition all have indicated a willingness to play again in the 2013/14 series which will start in October. And we already know of other teams which would like to join the comp.” All prize money was generated from within the competition and it was offered in the hope of attracting even more teams to the 2013/14 series.

The “Social/Mixed Division” competition concluded the week before and the winner, based on the points scored, was Team Doyle from Gresford & Vacy. The prize of $400 was presented to Harrison Doyle, who along with his brothers had played in both the Social and the Premier Divisions. All prize money was raised from within the competition and it was offered in the hope of attracting even more teams to the 2013/14 series.

reetings to Gresford – Culture Vulture has returned for 2013. Our first featured artist interview is with Ken Rubeli – writer, activist, photographer and naturalist.

Wangat Lodge, Environmental Education and Nature Recreation Centre, borders on the Barrington Tops National Park. For the past 25 years Ken has made a home and business career here. Over 500 groups of school and tertiary students have enjoyed taking part in their environmental awareness education programs held at the Lodge. The beauty and tranquillity of the eco-tourist destination attracts over 3,000 visitors a year.

Ken trained as a forester and worked in forestry management in Victoria during the 1960s. In 1974 as an Australian Volunteer he set off for Malaysia, during the coming years he taught forestry, worked in the rainforests as a Park Naturalist, gaining an in depth knowledge of the jungle plants

When I asked Ken about the beginnings of his artistic passion, he said “I’m not sure I have an artistic passion. I have a passion to communicate, and some of my means of communication might be deemed artistic. I took photographs people thought looked “arty” when I was ten years old, and enjoyed “creative” writing in primary school. My behaviour has always tended to the whimsical and the theatrical. I suppose I’m an educator.

It’s not that my knowledge is greater than other people’s, I just believe in it more profoundly and so am compelled to share it. “Children inspire me. They are moved by nature, it tantalises them, amazes them, and up lifts them. They are a joy to work with. And nature itself is the ultimate inspiration: it is astounding from the cosmos all the way to the microscopic and it all works so astonishingly well as long as humans can keep out of the way”.

Ken’s interest in writing and nature photography led him to begin a major book in 1980 – Tropical Rain Forests in SouthEast Asia – A Pictorial Journey, this project took six years including study and extensive travel Asia. It was published in 1986, the book contained 400 photographs and 20,000 words of text.

In 2010 –“Recently I put together a Photo Book on the Tillegra Valley which I sent off to several politicians including Kristina Keneally. It took at least 100 hours’ work and I wonder if any of them spent five minutes looking at it. But it did help me feel better. And they haven’t built the Tillegra Dam, yet! During his Malaysian years he took part in a similar protest which eventually stopped the building of a dam. Ken realised that words and photos can help to change the world. “Most of my photography is about telling a story, conveying a message… My life revolves around the natural world and I want people to see nature as something astonishingly beautiful and wondrous”.

150 poems I keep revisiting in the hope they’ll one day be fit for publication, and of course I keep writing more. I’m in the midst of a project to assemble about thirty digital images, monochrome, of panoramic natural scenes in each of which is a human figure somewhere half-hidden.

Fame and fortune they won’t bring, but it’s a way of communicating what an ageing man thinks is his wisdom.”

My last question for the interview – What are your future aspirations with your writing and photography? “I think I’d like my children to share it unashamedly with their friends. I’d like some politician somewhere to be moved by a sentence or an image. And there are some of my panoramic images of fabulous wild places that I fancy spread gigantically all over those vast blank walls of Bunnings buildings”.

I asked Ken what his present projects are?

“I’m trying to stay young. Photography will be a part of me until I drop. Writing is a sort of affliction that is irrepressible: I would like to thank Ken for his when I can no longer write I’ll die. I have interesting and candid interview.

P

rior to WW2 the road transport of saw logs to the mills was a difficult process. Trucks then available were not particularly suited to the work and many mills were located near forest reserves where they could be more easily supplied by bullock team, cable winch systems, crawler tractors or forest railways.

In those days there were only 2 sawmills in the Gresford district – one operated on the Upper Allyn by Hancock Bros and the other by Norman Joliffe who had a portable mill on the Paterson. These 2 steam powered mills provided for most local needs and all timber was drawn from private property.

Post war saw an economic boom driven by immigration and pent up demand held over from the war years and the depression. The State forests were opened up with Pender & Foster expanding its access to forest reserves on the Allyn and the James Co. from Newcastle accessing the Massey’s Creek forest in the Paterson valley. New mills were being built to meet the demand. Pender and Foster had

opened a forest mill on the Upper Allyn in 1942, a mill opened at Allynbrook in 1950, another at Gresford in the early 1960’s and there was Bert Partridge’s mill at Paterson.

Keeping all these mills, (including those in Maitland) supplied with saw logs by road transport would have been very difficult without access to the ex US

army Mack truck. During the war the Mack Co. had devoted all their production to the NR series producing them in 4*2, 6*4 and 6*6 drive configurations for use as heavy transporters.

Although crude by current standards they were in their time the best of US technology and in 18 wheeler

worse when they saw a kid in a straw hat (me) sitting up where they thought the driver should be! Kids in those days were brought along when there was logging at weekends to be “gofors”, opening gates and looking out for Kamikaze weekend drivers on the hills.

Many of these trucks had been shipped into Australia during the war years either assembled or partially assembled. Army disposal auctions cleared many of the assembled units used during the war and dealers eagerly seized on the new partially assembled units for later assembly and sale. Prices for the partially assembled (new) trucks were around £2200.

This was a lot of money when you consider that a good wage for a tradesman at the time was around £20 per week or £1000 per year! See the advertisement from 1950 for the 6*4 drive configuration.

Kids could also be a worry as I recall they were prone on the way home from school to dash onto a timber bridge when they heard these trucks approaching. The reason was simply to hang on and “enjoy” the ride as the bridge bucked and swayed alarmingly while the truck crawled across it. This didn’t go unreported however and the various “powers that be” would deliver a severe “ear bashing”.

Two local men, Rowley Wellard and Geoff Brooker each bought a 6*4 NR Mack at a disposal auction held at the ‘old’ Sydney Show ground and modified them as 18 wheeler log trucks. The photo attached (courtesy of Una Wellard) shows Rowley Wellard with his 2 NR’s. Note the log jinker “piggy backed” on the truck for the return run to the forest.

Even though these trucks were ponderously slow (max speed 37 mph or 60 kph) it was possible to do 3 loads in 2 days from the forest to the mills at Maitland.

In those days timber was measured in super feet (i.e. 300mm * 300mm * 25mm) and as rule of thumb 1000 super feet weighed 3 tons. Contractors were paid by the super foot and could routinely carry 6000 to 8000 (super feet) - more on a shorter haul.

It wasn’t however just a matter of always loading to the maximum. Road embankments & timber bridges had to be considered for safety and there were some steep hills to be negotiated on the way down to Gresford. It was a fine balance - too heavy could mean

Logging was indeed a dangerous business, often made worse by wet weather and there were always “incidents”- logs moving on the trucks, embankments breaking away, trucks sliding on slippery forest roads, bridges failing, load binders giving way and so on. Geoff Brooker been injured. when hauling for the Allynbrook mill would often comment, (as he was being unloaded) that he had 1 or 2 gears spare on the hill at Cross Keys (a notorious hill) and wished that he had taken a few 1000 (super) more.

Driving these Macks was a skilled task.

Power steering was yet to be invented, they were LH drive and the 10 speed gearbox had 2 sticks requiring two hands. On the approach to a hill Geoff would line the truck up, place his left arm through the steering wheel to anchor it and then get down to work with both hands on the twin sticks. I can still recall the startled faces of the many weekend drivers who on cresting a hill would dive off the road when they found themselves confronted by an apparently “driverless” log truck. Even

PATERSON-ALLYN GARDEN GROUP Well what a magnificent start to our year the January garden was. Thank you so much Janet Edmonds for having us at your stunning home. I think everyone enjoyed the casual chat about our horrible climate and how to turn a negative into a positive!!

Sue Newman’s grevilleas were nothing short of magnificent. Their common names as follows – Peaches and Cream, Firewheel (stenacarpis and to 8mts tall) Blood Orange, Sylvia and Moonlight. The fan flowers (Scabeola) were also very attractive and worth planting. Good to know that we can take soft stem cuttings from Grevillias , dip in honey and pot into sandy loam.

How about Peter Brecknock telling us that that awful weed Purselane is VERY edible and so is the leaf of Bidens – our ‘farmers friend’ or ‘sticky beak’. The things you learn!!!.

In February over twenty garden lovers turned up at the Addison property, ‘The Falls’, and after a talk by Penny Kater on plants to identify and eradicate such as

privett, the group heard how, after floods, droughts and cattle eating the vegetable garden, gardening was not top of the list of enjoyable pursuits.

Fortunately, the ambience of the property when it is green is all that is needed to produce paradise.

Allyn River. As we have had good rain recently, the grasses and the weeds were doing well.

I think our meeting at Peter Brecknock’s in March will be very interesting as most of us will be curious to see how he constructs his compost heap... the right way!!!

The group walked down to the old farmhouse, where the Badgerys have created an interesting cottage garden and those who wanted cuttings could take some for their gardens.

Tocal’s Daly Kidd Cottage now relocated The Daly Kidd Cottage was relocated back to its original site at Tocal Homestead on Wednesday, 19 December.

The move went smoothly and was captured on youtube. It can be viewed at http://youtu.be/zmZC9mKJSdg the title is Daly Kidd Cottage Relocation.

Daly was the only person to remain working on Tocal at the time of the sale of the property to the Alexander family.

His period of service on Tocal was from 1916 to 1936 with a brief period on Duninald in 1921. He later farmed at Duns Creek and Iona, Woodville.

Work will be undertaken during 2013 on the conservation of the building and reinstatement of the front and back verandahs. Landscaping will be done so that the building will look the same as it did when it was in that location until the late 1950s. For a period the focus will be on the Barracks.

The cottage was later occupied by a number of families and in the late 1950s the Misses Curtis, who were then living

in Tocal Homestead, decided to relocate it away from the Homestead to enable them to have more privacy. The house then stood on Tocal Road until the 19th December.

“The house is in good condition and has never had any termite damage. It does, however, require extensive conservation work; given the fact that it is just under 100 years old’ Dr Archer said.

“A large basement has been constructed under the cottage to enable the residents to park cars and store their goods. It is proposed that it will be the home of the Tocal Homestead caretaker.’ Dr Cameron Archer Tocal Director said.

The cottage was constructed around 1916 at the time of the marriage of Leslie Earle (Daly) Kidd (1886-1941) to Alice Chambers. Daly Kidd worked on Tocal and had also driven coaches for the Fry family of Paterson. In 1911 he drove the last coach from Maitland to Paterson.

Dungog Shire Relay For Life 2pm Sat 23 March to 8am Sun 24 March, Dungog High School Oval (Eloiza St. Entrance) Relay For Life is a team event to raise money in the fight against cancer and an opportunity to educate the community about ways to reduce their risk of developing cancer. Teams camp out overnight and a festival like atmosphere is created with live entertainment, ceremonies and food. Last year the event in Dungog Shire raised over $30,000! This year the theme is SUNPROTECTION with prizes for the best individual and team themed hats, and winner of the “primary schools relay”(we’re hoping all schools in the shire can take part).

The opening lap of the relay is dedicated to cancer survivors and those who have cared for someone facing cancer. Survivors and carers lead the first lap wearing special sashes to symbolize their courage and strength. Those unable to walk around the track are able to sit and watch. Survivors and carers are asked to register at the grounds on the day between 1pm amd 1.45pm (all are welcome – you don’t need to be in a team of walkers). Cattle 3 Day Sickness Confirmed

Simone Is Champion Again

Three Day Sickness has been confirmed, with blood sampling, in the Maitland District. Also known as Bovine Ephemeral fever, 3 day sickness is a virus spread by the insect, culicoides brevitarsis, – with warm wet weather we might see quite a lot of cases over the next month.

Simone Harvey, Tocal’s Lecturer in Horse Breeding is once again the Australian Campdraft and Rodeo Association’s (ABCRA) National Lady Rider. This is the fourth time that Simone has won this honour which she received at the recent ABCRA National Finals Campdraft at the Tamworth Equestrian Centre.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, lameness, drooling, depression and recumbency. Disease in bulls may also cause a temporary reduction in fertility due to the effects of fever on sperm production.

Simone competes around NSW on her 3 horses and accumulated points towards the national title every time she competed at a recognised campdraft. She has also competed at the Paradise Lagoons Campdraft at Rockhampton in 2012.

Younger animals from weaning to two years are generally most likely to be affected, with older animals which have been exposed in previous seasons are subsequently immune.

According to Simone, campdrafting is one of the most interesting and rewarding sports for those who have a love for horses. ‘It does take a lot of time to prepare horses and travel to competitions,’ she said. “It also requires a high level of skill, a sound knowledge of livestock behaviour and a little bit of luck. It is a challenge, but I really love competing with my horses. I also think my experience with campdrafting has really helped me in my position at Tocal, training students to work stockhorses.’

While the majority of animals recover after a few days, some take longer and occasionally death may occur.

Affected animals require provision of feed, water and shade and while there is no specific treatment for the virus itself, owners should contact their private vet for supportive treatment options.

Although there is a vaccine for 3 day sickness, it is usually too late to vaccinate once cases are being seen in the area, so cattle owners are encouraged to consider vaccination next year, especially for more valuable, heavier animals such as bulls.

The Tocal Certificate in Horse Breeding commenced in 1999 and has been a very popular course. This is the 15th intake of students with around 300 being trained since the course was introduced.

Health news Clinical Psychology Service Lower Hunter Community Health Service provides a clinical psychology service to residence of the Dungog Shire.

The service is staffed by qualified, registered clinical psychologists who can assist individuals in the community to deal with a range of issues.

Psychologist are consulted for any number of reasons: a person is not coping, feeling depressed or anxious, or feeling stressed; having difficulty dealing with grief, pain or may have relationship issues or parenting problems.

Lower Hunter Community Health Psychology offers services to individuals, couples and families and they work across the age range to tailor services to meet the needs of the community.

Individuals can be referred to the service by their GPs or can self refer by contacting the Intake service on 4931 2000.
