It shines for the Gresford Market

P

erfect winter weather helped to provide a great start to our June markets. The Therese Doyle Hall and grounds were once again alive with all the sights, sounds and smells that derives from a country style market. Were the markets a success you might well ask? A huge yes would be the answer with 24 from 25 stall holders booking for July with an extra 5 - 10 more on the list for August and September. Very positive comments on the spacious grounds and stall sites set up were taken on board. A big thank you must go to all the stall holders who travelled from near and far to brave the early morning start. Without you all we couldn’t’ hold the markets. Entertainment from Dungog’s DOUG Ukelele group proved to be one of the highlights of the day. They will be back in the near future to do it all again. Thanks to Royce, Di and friends.

July 21st is “Christmas in July” markets. To all the “Boys and Girls” “Big and Little” Santa is sending “Special Helpers” in their Big Red Fire Engine to give all bags of treat between 10 and 11.

Santa’s Elves will be there also to help you make your Christmas list. Purchase Christmas fare and gifts from all the great stall. Rumour has it there might be some Christmas puddings. Maybe just maybe a small group of songbirds might drop by to serenade us with Christmas Carols.

With continued community support our Gresford markets will go from strength to strength. So please come along on the 3rd Sunday of every month. Catch up with old and new friends “Spend a Penny” put on a “Smile” “Stay” awhile and enjoy.

A very special thank you to all those wonderful people young and old who helped me prepare for the June markets. My special thanks to my husband Lloyd who did the lion’s share of preparation – always my champion.

Please close the gate There have been several occasions recently when gates on back roads of cattle properties have been left open or unchained at weekends and holidays, presumably by people enjoying bike rides in the bush. In the excitement of a race or competition between friends it is possible to overlook the careful closure of gates in what seems like unoccupied country.

However, as a result of this, cattle have been boxed up and lost in the scrub, with the potential of young heifers becoming pregnant and dying a horrible, lingering and painful death.

Enjoy your bike rides, BUT please take a moment to close the gates.

Records tumble at St Anne’s Harvest Festival St Anne’s Anglican Church created history on Sunday 26th May with a record result from their annual Harvest Festival attended by over 80 enthusiastic supporters, some of whom spent in excess of $400 to support our Parish.

Their support raised a record $5328 for the Gresford/ Paterson Parish.

A large array of farm fresh vegetables, along with abundant fruit, plus a considerable array of home cooked cakes, sponges, biscuits, slices, jams and pickles took the fancy of the generous supporters of the festival.

It was standard procedure to see pumpkins sold for up to $18, sponge cakes made up to $80 with the highlight of the day, $360 paid for a load of firewood donated by Jim Joliffe and bought by Stephen Hill to keep the home fires burning through winter in the Hill household.

The local household coffee shop in old Gresford also spent well to stock the pantry for its many regular early morning customers.

As has been a developing tradition in the Gresford/Paterson Parish recently it

has become customary to auction a donated bottle of Scotch Whisky in memory of our late departed parishioners. The late Tom Richardson was honoured by St Anne’s this year and the Whisky was always going to be bought by Tom’s wife Georgina who won a very spirited bidding duel to secure the special bottle.

To make such a great day the success it turned out to be was due to the hard work of a dedicated band of supporters who deserve our grateful thanks.

Without these dedicated people this Harvest Festival and the money raised just wouldn’t happen.

To those who spent up big to secure the items auctioned a grateful thank you.

The ladies who prepared and served morning tea and soup to the attendees, the hard work and entertaining banter of auctioneers Keith and Trevor who left no stone unturned in their endeavours to extract the maximum amount of dollars from a willing crowd, along with those who worked behind the scenes to ensure the day was the success it was, please accept the sincere thanks of the Parish.

Wild lavender

– Belinda Alexandra This novel is set in the south of France and Paris, with the heroine (and what a heroine she is!) moving from humble beginnings to a life of fame and fortune.

Forced to work as a maid in Marseilles for her grasping aunt, Simone Fleurier becomes acquainted with a music hall crowd, and sets out for Paris to make a new life for herself. She faces obstacles such as backstage treachery; thwarted love and then the German Occupation, but sails on with courage, optimism, luck and extraordinary talent. Although the plot is rather idealised, the book is interesting for its perspective on the Paris of World War II, different social groups, and the response to the Occupation.

Alexandra’s research is sound, and she writes at length with great detail, and an obvious love of her characters.

Conference vote on a Medical Research Project to fund. This year we are once again supporting Crohn’s Disease.

Crohn’s Disease is an irritation of the gastrointestinal tract and this can be anywhere from the mouth to the anus but most commonly the small intestine and or the colon. There is no known cause and as yet no cure. The symptoms can be quite debilitating. The Crohn’s and Colitis Association receives no government funding and relies solely on business sponsorship, donations, Hunter President, Noelene Grainger & Jake Hipwell membership and community fundraising activities to continue their work. Guest speaker, Chris Shoji, who visited Morocco in 2006 talked of her experiences during her visit there. The Gresford school children created posters on Morocco which were displayed on the walls and created a colourful backdrop for the days proceedings. School Project winners were 1st, Clare Richardson, 2nd Jake Hipwell, 3rd Latia Hipwell – well done everyone.

After the presentation the children enjoyed delicious home-made pizza before making their way back to school.

Thank you to our International Officer, Robbie Thornton for her overall organization of the day and a huge thank you to the many helpers who gave their time to assist in so many ways and to everyone who donated cakes and slices etc. We haven’t forgotten the menfolk who helped out on the day either – thank you, we couldn’t manage without you.

Have you been to the movies lately? It can be a bit of a dodgy undertaking, can’t it? There are some pretty awful films out there. And it’s a bit of a trek to get to Maitland or Newcastle and then find that the movie that you’ve come all this way to see is a bit less than wonderful.

And this is where the James Theatre at Dungog comes in. An enthusiastic little group of film buffs, and folks who are just keen to see the old James Theatre live on, are re-introducing monthly movies at the James. We will endeavour to screen new release films, as evidenced by the recent showing of “The Great Gatsby” and “Iron Man 3”.

There is a sub-group of folks at the James, who are also promoting live shows,—shows of all kinds of music, and even, we hope, drama. Already there have been a couple of cabaret type shows, featuring operatic diva, Vivienne Powell, another with the world famous chamber music group from Tasmania, the Diemen Quartet. Fairly recently there was a production by the Maitland Gilbert and Sullivan Society, of “HMS Pinafore”.

August, is another cabaret type show, featuring Geof Bull’s New Orleans Jazz Band, with the great music of the 20’s and the Jazz Age. Why would you drive all the way to Newcastle when every few weeks you can see the best there is, right here, at Dungog’s James Theatre? It is a hundred years old next year. It is also the second oldest still operating Cinema in Australia. Where is the oldest? We’ll tell you when you get here!

The James is air conditioned. It has been thoroughly refurbished in every way. From the drab old joint that it used to be, has emerged a spectacularly attractive, useful, welcoming cultural centre. It’s amazing. (To use that overused theatrical word) And it’s not finished yet either. There are many more plans for the James Theatre. Just you wait!

Paterson Allyn Garden Group notes May & June May: Noel & Louise Brown kindly opened their garden for the May PAGG gathering and forty-three gardeners arrived to find an open fire in a superb enclosed ‘retreat’ under aged trees, with tea, coffee and cakes to welcome us. There has been serious work here to achieve an artistic ambience. Louise explained that in six years they have created the plantings and now they can look forward to the maturing of this well planned garden.

Mediterranean plants have been most successful, while a spectacular planting of natives, Bottlebrush, Kangaroo Paw and Lomandra provide a low maintenance cover to the bank behind the house. It was very interesting to see the before and after photos and how much work went into making their 160 acre property so lovely. We got some great ideas for planting on a sloping site, and we wish Doug well with his newest idea for the Folly!! A big thanks to Judy and Doug for having PAGG visit.

Burrcutter’s Ball at the Beatty helps Epilepsy Action Australia Another successful Burrcutter Ball was held at the Hotel Beatty on Saturday 1st June. The recipients of this year’s fundraiser will be Epilepsy Action Australia.

Gresford residents Andrew Turnbull approached the Burrcutter Ball Committee in 2012 and asked if they could hold the 2013 fundraiser for Epilepsy. Andrew spoke at the Ball about his experiences dealing with epilepsy on a day-to-day basis.

The Lawrence Reunion

The family group at this year’s reunion

O

n Sunday 5th June, approximately 300 people gathered at the Gresford showground to celebrate their ancestry.

From the youngest, 12 month old Lucas John Edward McAllister to the more mature, 87 year old Russell Lawrence and 88 year old Velma Soper, they had one thing in common… they are all the proud descendants of the first Lawrences who came to the Gresford area in 1849.

The history of the extensive Lawrence family begins with John Lawrence who

married Ruth Edmonds in England in 1836.

With their four children Thomas, George, Henry and Richard (who was possibly born on the ship) they arrived in Sydney on 21st May 1849. They settled and made their home in Lostock where Mary, Sarah and John were born. Each of these children went on to marry and have between 8 and 18 children each which accounts for the very strong number of Lawrence descendants today.

This is the third reunion for the Lawrence

family, the first being held 1986 with over 600 people in attendance. In 1995, a second reunion was held and a book was launched, detailing the Lawrence family history. At this year’s reunion, a beautiful quilt, handmade by Heather Roobol of Armidale, was on display. This quilt depicted the very first generation of Lawrences and allowed visitors to identify their branch of the family. The rock found at Lostock with cross cut saw marks

items of Lawrence memorabilia. One unusual item was a rock found by David Wells that had odd cut marks in it. It is believed that sometime between 1865 and 1867, two young Lawrence boys by the names of William and John, attempted to cut through this rock at Lostock using their father’s cross-cut saw.

After a large group photo was organised many of the visitors sat in groups to enjoy a picnic lunch then mingled with others to catch up on family news and discuss their relatives both past and present. Visitors came from all over New South Wales with even some from Queensland coming together with local Lawrence families to share their history. As the Lawrence family continues to grow there are certain to be more reunions in the future.

Gresford Vacy Football Club Inc MID SEASON REPORT Our U6’s to U12’s Small

A SCORPION GETS FEATHERS

Sided Teams, who don’t compete for a point score or in a Final, are all having a ball and playing some excellent football. The younger teams certainly engender some great support from parents, siblings and extended family. The 6’s & 7’s are a delight to watch as they find their feet and come to grips with the game. The Coaches and Game Leaders always have their hands full directing the play.

Congratulations to Zoe Butler for being selected into the Hunter Hawks Under12’s girls team. Zoe attended a selection trial at Cessnock about three weeks ago and was fortunate enough to win a position in the coveted all girls team.

The Hunter Hawks are the Hunter Valley Zone Rep Teams and are selected across several age groups and genders. They play into the local interdistrict comp against mixed A Division sides but also play in Zone Carnivals and vie for regional and state selection.

We’ve had a really good “dry season” to date which is unlike the last two seasons where we were behind 3 weeks by Round 8. Only a few teams have had wash-outs and they’ve been mostly on coastal grounds. Gresford hasn’t had to cancel a game yet which is largely due to the drainage works carried out by the Committee.

The mid-season ladder shows our teams getting into their stride with the “wins” slowly increasing. The All-Age Women have an 18 game comp. and this has put extra pressure on the girls with mid week games under lights replacing training. The pressure is now on our teams to build some points in the second half of the season. We know they’re quite capable of doing it. The competition ladder at Round 7 shows some excellent results from our U15’s & AAM#1 Inter-district Teams. The U15’s are certainly making their mark having not lost a game.

In her first game with the Hawks Zoe scored both the goals to defeat Maitland two nil. Eleven years old Zoe, who is also the Vacy School 2013 Girl Captain, has played for Gresford Vacy since Under 6’s but admits to having a year off to try netball before realizing that she really preferred soccer. She was a member of our 2013 Under 12’s side before accepting the call to the Hawks and will be sorely missed.

Parents Carrie and Glenn expressed their delight at their daughter’s selection and as Glenn is the Coach of an Under 6’s side, as well as the Under 12’s his exposure to the Hawk’s training regimes will no doubt influence the way he goes about training Gresford Vacy.

Whilst our club regrets loosing talented players we now realize that upon their return they bring their improved skills with them. Those skills are transferred to their team mates and often copied by our younger players.

Zoe follows in the footsteps of talented fellow lady Scorpions Lucy Preistley and Tahlar Darnley who returned to our club this year after several years with the Hawks.

q Gresford District Historical Society r Riches under our feet? – part 2

Last month, part 1 of this story reviewed the mining history of our area. Although we have a surface geology which has produced gold, silver, copper and antimony, the good news for most people in the district would be that this geology makes it highly unlikely that we will be disturbed by exploration for coal or coal seam gas.

Gresford-Lostock road and the mine lies on the south side of the Paterson River close to Charcoal Gully. Note that the name of the Allynbrook Syndicate has become attached to the ore deposit which is now officially referred to (incorrectly) as the Allynbrook deposit.

Readers may recall that in 1854, G.K. Holden of the Penshurst estate (Mt Rivers) exhibited a sample of antimony ore (stibnite) at the Paris International Exhibition and this ore body was later mined by the Allynbrook Antimony Mining Syndicate from 1906 with some commercial success.

The date 1906 is rather central as 1906-1907 were boom years for antimony with the price of the ore and metal increasing almost 4 times between 1904 and 1907. Antinomy by itself is not inherently valuable and it is just a brilliant silvery white metal only slightly harder than copper. Its value comes from its ability to alloy with most metals making them harder.

At the time (1906-7) it was highly prized for its ability to produce antifriction bearing metals essential to the emerging car industry. It was also essential for the production of type metal used in the (then) printing processes of the newspapers. Antimony was also used as a pigment in paints and coatings and it was essential to the military for the production of cartridges for what was called the “new firearms” industry.

These days antimony’s main uses are as a fire retardant, (in textiles, plastic, paper and rubber) and as an alloy for batteries, solders, enamels and semi conductors. It is now however very much back in favour. Recently, the British Geological Society issued Risk List 2012 ranking the metals most necessary to maintain our economy and lifestyle and the risk of each becoming of critical supply. No 3 on the list behind rare earths and tungsten is antimony. The reason is that China is the leading producer and is the leading reserve holder. In the 1990’s Chinese production was so cheap that many Western mines closed or were taken over

by Chinese interests. We now have a somewhat artificial world wide shortage.

As a result prices have rocketed and in recent years have reached levels of $17000 (US) per ton.

The deposit was first worked by Tom Hancock of Allynbrook from 1906 and it is thought that this timing was related to the then boom in prices. By 1907 Tom had sunk a shaft 130 feet (approx. 40 metres) to produce 40 tons of a medium grade ore which assayed 20%.

This shaft has now collapsed.

Processing antimony, particularly where gold and silver is also present is relatively complex and in Dec 1906 a smelter was established at Balmain (Sydney). This smelter commenced in March 1907. It is believed the ore from Tom’s workings was sent to Balmain and it is also believed that traces of gold and silver may have been taken by the smelter to offset the costs of smelting. For obvious reasons, Tom was keeping his “cards close to his chest” and few specific records exist, but it appears from the prices in these boom years that he would have been rewarded for his efforts. We also know that just after this he was able to have a new home built and buy forest land for a saw milling venture – so we can draw our own conclusions.

Unfortunately they were unable to intersect with the original reef and found only relatively low grade ore.

Undeterred, further shafts were sunk, with sometimes encouraging results but not in sufficient quantities to provide a commercial return. By then of course the price which swung wildly with the market had declined to levels experienced prior to 1900. Nevertheless they were sufficiently encouraged to exhibit a sample of the ore at the British Empire Exhibition of 1925 held at Wembley. Given the price, their view was that assay values in excess of 1% could be considered encouraging.

Well what of the future? No one can predict that but we do know two things.

Firstly, no one has assessed the extent of tonnage and grade of ore left in the Penshurst ore body. Secondly, we also know that antimony is one of the key risk metals and it is now in a controlled short supply. Given this it is a safe bet that the site will be revisited in the foreseeable future.

Stay well and know where to go for medical assistance this flu season Hunter New England Health Public Health Physician Dr David Durrheim is urging community members to stay well and know where to go for medical assistance if they do get sick this flu season.

“So far this year there have been 29 confirmed influenza cases, compared with nine for the same time last year.

Influenza is already around so it’s time to take action,” Dr Durrheim said.

“There are a number of ways you can take care of yourself this winter and protect your co-workers, friends and family from illness.”
