If it is a pleasant night, we hope to set up in the garden again so children can bring games to play. After the abortive proposal to merge Dungog and Gloucester shires, 1,000 people from Dungog and Clarence Town signed a petition requesting a merger of the Williams Valley with Port Stephens Council. Later 2,000 people shire-wide signed a petition to merge the whole Shire with Port Stephens which was presented to the Council and ignored. The Dungog Chronicle ran a survey on-line: of the 470 votes, 76% wanted to merge with Port Stephens – less than 8% favoured stand-alone. Mr Johnsen and Mr Mayor, you were both elected to represent this community, please do what the majority in your community want: a constructive merger that will address our problems. We would also like the $15M promised us towards our infrastructure backlog following a merger. Where is the community support for giving up those badly needed funds? Gresford CWA News CWA French The Gresford CWA French group celebrated its inaugural year at the end of December with a festive French-style lunch. The group started in early May with just three of us, but has blossomed throughout the year, tripling in size, and promises to grow even more next year. As co-ordinator, I have been impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the regulars, and I welcome anyone who wants to become involved. Our group ranges from beginners to people with experience and expertise in the language, but everybody is patient with everyone else. Some members are Francophiles who want to enhance their language experiences while travelling, while others want to expand and consolidate the knowledge they have or simply enjoy the challenge of keeping their minds active. The French language can be daunting because of the pronunciation, but that always improves with time and application. It can also be a lot of fun – which is borne out by the frequent laughter and camaraderie within the group.
I’d like to thank CWA President Robbie Thornton and the members for their support. The rooms are open for French on the first and third Warwick and Fiona, shown here with Glenda, added to the festivity of the occasion in their Wednesdays of each month from 11 – 12:30, but coordinating French inspired apparel! The Angry Tide By Winston Graham This is one of several Poldark novels in the CWA Library. It is seventh in the series and takes up the story of Ross Poldark and his wife Demelza in the intricacies of their lives in late eighteenth century Cornwall. Earlier books in the series have featured in recent Sunday night ABC melodramas. Ross Poldark and George Warleggan are long term enemies, and have moved their competition to the political arena. They are both successful in mining and business, and have seats in Parliament – Ross having been elected thanks to an effective patron, and George having bought his way in via a rotten borough. Ross is an impetuous but moral man, while George is calculating and greedy – no prizes for guessing who the hero is! George’s family, which has major interests in banking, tries to ruin a local bank, while Ross through perseverance and charisma, attempts to save it. Their lives, and the lives of those involved with them, are often in a state of extreme tension because of the family hostilities. The Poldark novels explore the social dynamic of the time through well-drawn and mostly sympathetic characters, with effective foils. Demelza is an open and benevolent character, while Elizabeth (Goerge’s wife and Ross’ first love) is a much more enigmatic character, trying to survive in a world dominated by men and money. This is an entertaining novel which explores the values of the time with gusto.

Why do we travel?... the adventures of DOUGIE
by Doug and Judy Daly
Twenty minutes later we are ready to go. We are assured we can return the car to Heathrow Airport by 3.30 without penalty but the loading for different return location is forty dollars. This is acceptable. I know Heathrow Airport. Been there many times before says I. The man brings the car up but it does not look like a Ford Focus that DOUGIE is familiar with and is manual as they all drive in UK. It is a Suzuki, similar size, black, with only seven hundred miles on the clock. Very Nice. Six gears and reverse!! Keys handed over with no explanation given on the detailed characteristics of the vehicle. We drive off but accept we must bring the car back full with diesel.
Hi All, As we get older the Joys of picking up a Hire Car diminishes. Is it old age or the hire companies' poor communication? We arrived at Euston Station at two pm from Glasgow by Virgin Train with the hire car booked for three pm down the road at Kings Cross Station. Easy Peasy says I. Euston Station teamed with thousands of people as we come off the train. A bit busier than Maitland Station!! Having been on the train (which has toilets) for four hours plus, Judy announces that she wants to visit the loo at the far end of the Station where fifty other ladies are queuing to spend their thirty Pence. In the mean time I queue to buy an A to Z of London. Signs

No sign huge concert!! The hire of a Sat Nav was too dear for DOUGIE, nearly the cost of of the taxi rank so we set off walking!! four pints of beer in the UK!! Within three minutes I am fed up and luckily find one heading for Kings Cross The first few miles were absolutely hectic and we jump in apologising for the short as it is one of these cars that the engine ride. dies when in standstill!! Most concerning when you start and go into third gear The Taxi Driver is more knowledgeable than me. We get into a traffic jam and I instead of first, and stall immediately, much to the distress of the car behind you witness the meter turning over at an who does not know the driver in front is incredibly speedy rate. We finally get to the depot with the cab charge nearly one totally accustomed to automatic cars. days hotel bill!! We very slowly head south, but take a wrong turn (DOUGIE says he knows Alas the depot is busy with other London like a taxi driver) so we end up customers that must have arrived at in the West End. Lovely to see the Kings Cross as we arrived at Euston. Next day off to our English friends Anne and Patrick in Lindfield, West Sussex, where we have no need of wheels for thirty six hours as they have two cars and a big Volvo. Our little baby remains parked. We then travel on Friday to Patricia and Steven in Hampton, Middlesex where we park the Suzuki for the night HOWEVER as we arrive one hundred yards from their house an idiot nearly runs us down so DOUGIE swerves and hits the kerb – again creating more scratches to the rim of the inside front wheel!! So out with the six page Hire Agreement which tells us if there are scratches on the wheel exceeding fifty mm YOU will pay and NOT only this but any damage to the tyres is payable? Alas there is a minor chunk of the tyre that has been cut. DOUGIE, being a genius says we will put the spare on and Europcar will never

DOUGIE, being a nervous person for time and knowing we had to get our little friend back to Heathrow by 3.30pm or pay for another day, broke a lovely roast lunch to leave early and make the timing. No we will not fill up at Hampton as the garage is bust, and as we travel on the M23 and M25 and M4 we find there are no Petrol/Diesel Stations. We have to divert three miles to fill up!! Into busy Heathrow. Signage for Return Hire Cars is incredibly vague until one meets the underground tunnel leading to Terminal 1, 2 & 3. In Italy my highlights were the visits to the Lamborghini and Ducati Factories near Bologna whilst Judy visited by far too many Churches and Museums that are too long to list. Ryanair were again consistent as always on the flight between Bologna and Athens. Packed plane like sardines with knees up to chin, and customary running one hour late without any apology. Food prices through the roof. DOUGIE on arrival at Athens Airport did NOT like the seventy euro taxi ride to our downtown hotel so "We will use the train that was built for the Olympics" he said. "We have been on it before and it was easy peasy"... but NOT at four pm in the afternoon. Half hour wait, as he kept on saying to Judy "It won't be long". Train comes in with mad scramble to get a seat and I miss out!! The girl opposite Judy must think I'm fifty with my dark hair as she is determined to hang onto her seat for the eighty minute journey as the train stops at over fifteen stations and continues

EHRETIA ACUMINATA The Koda Tree A local tree that is extremely hardy. It is also known as Silky Ash and Churnwood. This is one of very few Australian native deciduous trees. It is native to areas from Bega on the NSW South Coast to Cairns in Northern QLD and extends to New

In our local area it has been recorded from Belltrees, Watagan, Newcastle, Kelehears Brush, Cedar Brush Reserve, Stewarts Brush, Allyn River, Paterson River, Williams River, Tabbil Creek, and many other areas. These days though it is hard to find a large mature specimen as they

Gresford Community Matters
Thank you everyone who participated in the Gresford Community Group's first Christmas Lights Competition. You exceeded our expectations and really made the villages of Gresford ‘look a lot like Christmas’ – thank you again. We are looking forward to next year and to see how much more decorative the Gresford villages can look. To the business and community groups thank you for your participation with particular mention of the CWA, the Police Station and the Gresford School – your effort was really appreciated. I think everyone noted the wonderful display at the Beatty Hotel and the Twin Rivers Café. Bernie, you and your team really lit up that corner. To all, thank you so much for being involved. What a difficult task judging was! Judges Steve, Liz Jones and Graham Murphy thought it would take about an hour – 2 and 1/2 hours later ... If we could have awarded more prizes and finalists it would have been a lot easier. This year, 2017, there will be a ‘People’s Choice’ category so everyone can be involved.
22 Durham Road, 30 Church Street and 5 Short Street, along with Robert Richardson’s effective use of strobe lighting at his Singleton Road property. Our six finalists were: Joe and Gem at 22 Durham Road, Robyn and Dallas at 12 Glebe Road, Maree and Michael at 8 Glebe Road, Kylie at 29 Church Street, 23 Short Street, Mark at 27 Short Street. Best Novelty display and the $50 went to Robyn at 12 Glebe Road, who was delighted and said it was the first time she had ever won anything. We awarded this because of the number of elements displayed – there was a lot to see and watch. Best Lighting display and the $100 went to Mark at 27 Short Street. We found this yard to be like a wonderland of light – we kept going back and comparing it to others. The lighting was consistent, co-ordinated and had a dense planting of colour – each visit we noticed something we hadn’t before.
Carols by Candlelight
While not making the final six we would Well what a fantastic night that was, like to mention the following residences: the weather was terrific, the carolling
from GAPS fully engaging – we didn’t realise how many villagers could really sing so well and everyone got involved. The Tennis Club did a great job with the BBQ –so good they ran out of sausages and did a quick trip to restock thanks to the Beatty Hotel. The PreSchool not only provided the ‘glow stick’ stall and Lyndell Osmond led PreSchoolers with their beautiful contribution to the evening. I think my favourite sight of the evening was all the little girls dancing and singing at the front of the GAPS carolling while all the young boys were playing cricket at the back – just like a family picnic. Thanks must go to The Cross Roads Café, The Beatty Hotel, Gresford Butcher and the IGA for their donations to the raffles and prizes for the Carols by Candlelight finalists. To finish the night was the wonderful fireworks display from Aurora Fireworks – a fitting way to end a very successful evening.
2016 in summary Apart from the Christmas Lights competition and Carols by Candlelight night, what a hectic year for the Gresford Community Group with so much accomplished. Some highlights were:
