T

he weather was perfect for the 82nd Gresford Show on March 7th & 8th with sun shining on both days. The Art preview evening on the Thursday was combined with the presentation of the Gresford Showgirl. This year’s successful candidate was Isabella Winchester.

The golden moments continued when the Channel 7 Sunrise weather team started things off with a flurry of excitement on the Friday morning. Although the hour was early a cheerful crowd including some local school children came to the showground to be part of the audience for the television coverage. The town was abuzz for days with talk of the great television coup of having the Sunrise team promoting the traditions of Gresford Show. We were very fortunate to have this opportunity and our thanks go to Penny Evans for her part in arranging the visit – it certainly made for a very special event.

Tractors, Tractors, Everywhere

Dungog Shire’s invasion of tractors took over the Gresford Showground on Thursday 20th March. They had been driven from Dungog, up over the Salisbury Pass, down to Eccleston, where the drivers had morning tea, at the Eccleston Bushfire Shed. It had been a long drive up through the Williams River Valley, and over the top. Some of the drivers were walking awkwardly. Some of those old Brit tractors had seats designed by women—if you get my drift? A few hours on some of them could alter your voice! Anyways, the morning tea at Eccleston was very much appreciated, and the cavalcade moved on.

The leaders arrived at Gresford a bit before

they were expected, and they were directed to fill in a bit of time. One citizen got a bit stroppy about it all, which, I guess it was his perfect right to do, and the tractors made their way to the lunch, which by this time was ready. There were about 100 tractors all parked in rows (more or less) at the Gresford Showground. And as they did where ever they stopped, they made a fairly spectacular sight. They were in all states of appearance. From as new, to anything but.

But the mechanical condition of them was not in question, during the whole week, there were only two or three occasions when any of them ‘failed to proceed’.

Lunch over, the whole disaster moved off in a more or less orderly style and headed for Dungog, over Bingleburra.

Most of them made it home dry. Some of the stragglers, sadly, got very very wet. It was the afternoon of the Big Blow, if you recall. However, being as they are, made of stern stuff, everyone was very cheerful about it all. That is the tale of the Tractor trek to Gresford. The Hunter Valley Vintage Farm Machinery Club would like to say thanks, for the use of your showground, and to say also, that some of the participants in the Trek were blown clean away by the scenery along the Allyn River.

Gresford Landcare Group Celebrates 25 years of Landcare One of the first Landcare groups to be formed in New South Wales, Gresford Landcare Group, is joining in the celebration of 25 years of Landcare, for which Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, has recently announced funding of $100,000. Unlike many other Landcare Groups started with enthusiasm in that time, only to disappear into oblivion, Gresford Landcare still boasts a number of its founding members, still as passionate about caring for the land as they were 25 years ago when they banded together to found what was originally briefly called the Paterson/Allyn Landcare Group.

In that time the group has undertaken or assisted in some major land conservation projects, including the rehabilitation of a massive landslip on Chads Creek Road. Its recent focus has been assisting in the preservation and upgrade of the Gresford Swimming hole, with working bees to remove weeds and rubbish, provide new steps from the camping ground

down to the river, and mass plantings of lomandra in an effort to stabilise the steep bank on the Western side.

Gresford Landcare Group is an eclectic group of people united by their love of, and interest in, the land. Monthly meetings focus on a wide variety of topics and discussion is usually lively.

Working bees are followed by the traditional sausage sizzle and a chance to socialise. One to two field days are held annually on a variety of topics and the annual Landcare dinner with after dinner speaker is always well attended.

Members’ interests range from traditional agriculture, to biodynamics, forestry, bush conservation, to name a few and visitors and new members are always welcome.

For the Gresford Landcare Group the 25-year celebration will not only be a celebration of years past, but a passionate affirmation to continue caring for our land into the future.

What’s (not) on the Shelves?

The End of Your Life Book Club

Will Schwalbe

This book was the choice for the Gresford Book Club in March, and is such a special book that it is worthy of note – even though it is not on the shelves of the CWA library.

Will Schwalbe documents the time he spent with his mother while she was being treated for pancreatic cancer, and it is a highly life-affirming book, in spite of its genesis.

To pass the time, they formed their own private book club, and used their reflections on the books they loved to help them deal with the situation they found themselves in.

Mary Ann Schwalbe was an active humanitarian, who, in the words of her obituary, ‘was the founding director of what was until this year called the Women’s Refugee Commission, leading the organization from 1990 to 1994.

She was an eloquent, devoted and tireless advocate for women, children and adolescents affected by war and persecution.

She had visited refugees in settings around the globe, including in Afghanistan, Liberia, Sudan and Thailand, touching the lives of all she met.’ The compassion and greatness of character of Mary Ann comes through in her son’s tribute, but he also shares their love of books, and the wisdom that accrues from an open mind.

Gresford CWA News What a great agricultural show! The showground looked picture perfect and the weather was kind. The visit by Channel 7 weather crew very early on Friday morning meant we were in business cooking bacon and egg rolls in the dark. Many thanks to Amorelle, Marcia, Melanie and Liz for feeding the hungry crew. The CWA Tea Rooms provide a friendly atmosphere for people to meet and greet and chill out. Thanks to Dotti for another delicious menu.

im Capp has many reasons to feel proud. As president of the Gresford and District Agricultural Society he should be proud of another fantastic show this year. He should be proud of the fact that Sunrise weather presenter Edwina Bartholomew was persuaded to broadcast live across Australia from the Gresford Show on Friday making Tim and Gresford national celebrities – well for one morning at least. Mostly, though, at the moment he is proud to be a first time grandfather to a new granddaughter born just after the show.

q Gresford District Historical Society r Barrington Tops – A Vision Divided

T

he name “Barrington Tops” refers to the undulating basalt plateau in the Mt Royal range some 24 kms in length which runs from Tomalla in the North down to the area around Carey’s peak in the South. The plateau has an elevation of around 1500m with Brumlow Tops at 1586m the highest point.

It is an area of great scenic beauty with deep rainforest valleys extending out from the plateau. There is a transition of distinct forest types as you ascend from the valleys onto the plateau and with an annual rainfall of 1500ml some 21 streams have their source in Barrington Tops. The sphagnum moss swamps on the plateau and the rainforests in the valleys act as sponges sustaining the flows in rivers such as the Hunter, Manning, Allyn, Williams, Paterson, Gloucester, Chichester, Wangat, Kerripit, many communities on the Eastern and Barrington, Bowman, Dilgry, Cobark and Southern sides, I find that few local Pigna Barney. people have actually set foot there. Gresford Vacy Football Club Inc Winter Comp To Start Soon Gresford Vacy has now finalised its winter sign-up and will be fielding 18 teams in the combined Hunter Valley/Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Zone competition. This is an increase of two teams over the 2013 nominations and 7 new teams over the last 5 years. 2014 will be the first season where the club will play in a Friday night comp and will see two games conducted under lights at the Gresford Sporting Complex every second week.This is also the first season where GVFC has fielded a third men’s team.

3rd Annual GVFC Gala Day Gresford Vacy will host its third Gala Day on April 5 as a prelude to the 2014 Zone Comp. Invitations to Dungog, Clarencetown, Seaham-Bowthorne and Stroud Ladies have been accepted and over 55 teams have indicated a willingness to be involved. It will be a full-on day for our club with games from 8:30am ‘til after dark at the Gresford Sporting Complex.

Junior Cricket Successful Season The 1st of March saw the end of a hugely successful season for the Gresford District Junior Cricket Club and the Milo In 2 Cricket and the Milo Have a Go Programs. We had a record number of participants with 23 children aged between 4 years and 9 years travelling from Paterson,Vacy, Gresford, Allynbrook and Glendonbrook to take part.

Under the expert guidance of Brendon Sellens our budding cricketers took to the pitch each week to learn the various skills involved in the game. With batting skills always popular, the children also learnt how to bowl, field and the all important art of patience.

Each participant received upon registration a Milo Cricket Pack which included a bat, ball, hat, tshirt and backpack.

Not even the much needed rain could stop our end of season presentation and fun day, where we managed to squeeze our jumping castles, sausage sizzle and medal presentation into the Gresford School of the Arts Hall. A big thank you to Kel Merriman for his help with the last minute relocation.

The Gresford District Junior Cricket Club elected a new committee this year, who hope to improve and nurture junior cricket in the area and create a pathway for all cricketers into the senior competitions.

We would love to see new faces involved next season and encourage anyone who wishes to help out with the coaching our enthusiast youngsters. Look out for registration details for the 2014/15 season in your local newspaper later in the year.

Guided Walks for April School Holidays

No Power for 4 Days After Storm

April is a great time to experience a guided walk at the Blue Gum Loop in the Barrington Tops National Park, and this year there are two heritage themed walks on offer over the school holidays on Wednesday, 16 and Wednesday 23 April.

The Blue Gum Loop is an easy 3.5km (1.5 – 2 hrs) family oriented walk that follows the Williams River near Salisbury. This is a great opportunity to do the walk with local volunteer guides who have an excellent knowledge of the area. The guides will provide visitors with a unique experience, providing fun facts about features along the walk including local flora and fauna.

A special feature of the April walks will be more detailed information about the history of the upper Williams including stories about the Barrington Tops, timber getters, sawmills, bushrangers, farmers and the iconic Barrington Guest House.

There are picnic tables, barbecues and toilet facilities available at the Picnic Area, so walkers and families can bring their lunch and make a day of it.

These tours are part of the partnership between NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Dungog Shire Visitor Information Centre and Dungog Shire Council.

Bookings are essential to ensure the tours proceed. Costs are $10 per adult, $8 per child or a family pass is available for $25. Tours will depart at 10 am from Williams River Picnic Area not far from the end of the tar-sealed Salisbury Road from Dungog.

The storm that swept across the Shire on Sunday 16 March left a trail of broken and flattened trees, houses and sheds without roofs, blocked roads, broken fences and downed power lines. The worst local damage occured above the Cross Keys Road intersection on Paterson River Rd and in the vicinity of Dog Trap Creek Rd on Allyn River Rd. Many residents to the north of Gresford were left without power for 4 days as road and electrical crews struggled with the huge clean up operations.

Field Day on African Olive Control Sat 12 April 2014 – 9:30am – 2:00pm Morning Tea and Lunch included.

Hunter Local Land Services in partnership with Dungog Shire Council are holding a free field day bus tour to show participants various sites in the Dungog Shire area being impacted on by African Olive, and provide demonstrations of the most effective control methods currently known for this invasive weed.

African (or Wild) Olive is an emerging weed in the Dungog Shire. It has aggressively developed into a real problem for landholders in Maitland Vale, Glendonbrook, Elderslie, and Lambs Valley.

Maitland and Singleton council areas have the most significant infestations where this weed has colonised remnant bushland, pastures, roads, hillsides and creek banks. It can exacerbate soil erosion on slopes and ridges, encourage the harbouring of pest animals such as rabbits, foxes and Indian Mynah birds, and create dense impenetrable areas making mustering and grazing livestock difficult. It is threatening native bushland areas by forming dense understorey that outcompetes and inhibits other native plants from growing.

To assist in addressing this emerging problem in the Dungog area, Hunter Local Land Services has secured funding from the NSW Environmental Trust to undertake roadside control work, and assist interested landholders by providing technical advice and access to equipment, herbicide and contracted control work for difficult areas/infestations. Participants will get the chance to hear from other landholders who are tackling African Olive on their properties on the day, and get information on how to access assistance currently being offered through Hunter Local Land Services.

Small Biz Bus The Small Biz Bus from the Office of the Small Business Commissioner will be in Dungog Shire on Thursday, 1 May. The Small Biz Bus is a mobile advisory and information service for small business that travels across NSW, delivering face to face, personalised assistance. At each stop, experts help local people to gain a new perspective on their business, as well as giving them additional tools and insights on their path to success.

This is an initiative of the NSW Government and services on the bus are available at no cost to small business operators.

Despite the wonderful rain on Clean up Australis Day we had 14 willing helpers and cleaned up a massive load of rubbish, mostly from the Gresford Vacy Road. The river bank at the caravan park was also a challenge.

One of our volunteers suggested to a camper that he may like to help. He curtly replied that he didn’t pick up other peoples rubbish!. Thank goodness we don’t all have that attitude.

I am concerned though that the average age of volunteers was over 70 years of age! Next year I will figure out a way to reach those 20 years younger than us! I know that we are a proud community and I can only hope that we can encourage those a bit younger to help out in the future.
