Letter To The Editor USE IT OR LOSE IT As a member of a small group within the Gresford Community Group which seven years ago began seriously lobbying the Liberal Party (Bob Baldwin) and then upon his election as the Federal Member, our present National Party member, Dr David Gillespie, in an attempt to have the two main streets of East Gresford completely upgraded, I write this letter to seek the help of people from the Gresford and district area. The million dollars Dr Gillespie obtained for the project from the Federal Government, together with the substantial amount contributed by Dungog Council and the NSW State Government has meant that work is well underway and that we may all see faster racing at the Billy Cart Derby on Easter Saturday. Members of Gresford Vacy Junior Cricket Club have wound up another successful season on the pitch as part of the Maitland District cricket competition. It is the second year this group of boys has come together under Colts coach Brendon Sellens and their skills continue to improve as they learn the finer points of the game. They dominated many games throughout the season but, at times, they also had to dig deep in an effort to match it with a stronger opponent. From next season this team will step away from the modified format of the game to play for the Colts in the under-12s comp. The club continues to grow and is expected to field additional teams next season as young Milo and T20 Blast cricketers graduate to the modified game. A New Year brings great New Things for our little salon. We would like to welcome Kelly Richardson to our team as a 1st year Apprentice Hairdresser. We are all very excited to have her joining us. The students dressed in the national costumes of different countries and shared a multicultural feast supplied by staff and members of the P&C association. They also heard from Kindergarten teacher Genevieve Grace who spoke about her Tongan background and the traditions her family celebrates today and Year 1 student Pearl Ropata read the storybook Whoever You Are by Mem Fox. Year 6 student Liza Kelehear during the parade.

Taylah Joliffe and Katie Curtin-Edwards embrace cultural diversity. Kindergarten students Charlie Hill, Billy Richardson and Kurtis Joliffe share in the spirit of the day.

GRESFORD SHOW 2017 Saturday all was sunshine and smiles as people came to enjoy and be entertained at the 85th Gresford Show. The crowd watched the action in the Main Ring and looked through the fantastic displays in the pavilions. The horse, angora goat, cattle and poultry sections were well represented whilst the Guinea Pigs and Bunnies section proved very popular with younger visitors to the Show. Campdraft entries were good again this year with the Jim Jupp Memorial Open Draft being taken out by Rod Moore on Cougar and the J. P. Dooley Memorial Novice Draft going to April Longridge on Top Gun. Visitors and long time Gresford Show supporters continue to be impressed and amazed by our displays including the pavilion full of exhibits completed by local school & preschool children. The winner of the Mary Kealy Memorial Trophy for the most successful exhibitor in the Main pavilion (percentage based) was Mrs Crystal Griffiths who had entered a huge 108 entries across several sections. Colleen Litchfield was the Most successful exhibitor in the Cooking and Delma Lawrence had the Champion Jam. Even though the growing season has been very

harsh there was an admiral display of fruit and vegetable with huge watermelons. The heaviest watermelon was produced by Peter Lawrence who also claimed the Darrell Lawrence Memorial Trophy. On Saturday afternoon the crowd was entertained by a variety of events in the main ring starting off with the Grand Parade which included some Mudrunner cars with the lovely Gresford Junior Showgirl entrants on board. Mr Richard Jones, from the Newcastle Rescue helicopter, officially opened the Show. This was followed by a demonstration of wood chopping; ag bikes; post splitting finals and the invitation Steer Ride which was won by Thomas Hudson. The night was completed with Kids Disco before the fantastic display of fireworks which is always popular with the young and young at heart. Despite difficult weather condition leading up to the show, Gresford Show was once again a credit to the many people in the rings and pavilions who provide hours of work to make it happen. A big vote of thanks goes to all who helped in any way to make the Gresford Show the success it was, is and continues to be. Rosalie Lawrence

Science Hub Getting Some Big Ticks

Talking critters

Wed April 12, 7.00pm EE ✓ CWA Hall, Dungog FR In a science based presentation, Dr Cameron Webb of the Uni of Sydney and Westmead Hospital will look at “Beating the bite of mosquitoes that spread Ross River virus”. What sort of mozzies spread the virus? What are the links between local wetlands, wildlife and climate change for future outbreaks? Webb, who’s written an excellent guide to mozzie repellents, will give tips for their safe and effective use and tricks to stop the critters breeding in our backyards.

Did you know there’s a science hub based in our shire? It’s the Paterson Allyn Williams Science Hub, and it’s a partnership between our own Dungog Community College, the Sustaining The PROGRAM: Williams Valley group, and a bunch of terrific volunteers from across the shire. Last year they brought us films, an NBN talk, Fizzics fun, Fungi facts and Birding excitement. A grant from Inspiring Australia got them underway, and they’ve reached hundreds at their events. Ticks will be covered by local vet Digby Rayward. Sustaining Williams Valley

This year is looking as exciting as the last. Their first event is Talking Critters on Wednesday 12 April where Dr Cameron Webb of the University of Sydney and

Westmead Hospital will look at “Beating the bite of mosquitoes that spread Ross River virus”. What sort of mozzies spread the virus? What are the links between local wetlands, wildlife and climate change for future outbreaks? Webb, who’s written much about mozzies including a guide to repellents, will give tips for their safe and effective use and tricks to stop the critters breeding in our backyards. Ticks will be covered by local vet Digby Rayward. He’ll focus on a new strain of Theileria affecting cattle but he’ll also be answering some of the questions he hears every day in his job about these rascals. On Saturday 29 April the hub and another terrific group Local Living Dungog are holding a big day about saving $$ on power bills. 'Power Choices' includes tips and techniques that every household can use, the goss on solar and metering, and a talk by CSIRO scientist Julio Braslavsky about batteries and some future developments in power. 'Power Choices' is the brainchild of Helen Rubeli, who also hopes to attract some families to join her Take Two Project, trying out some of the easy

Getting to know the locals... by Noel Jupp OAM, Dip Hort, QP Dept Ag & Fisheries LOMANDRA LONGIFOLIA CMU FORM (Crazy Mixed Up Form) A few years ago Singleton Landcare engaged me to do a flora survey of several areas in their zone which included sites east of Singleton towards Gresford, Mirannie & Glennies Creek, Lambs Valley, Elderslie, Howes Valley and Putty. We did a detailed survey of the two creeks in the Putty area and found a group of Lomandra on Putty Creek. My first reaction was the assumption that they resembled Lomandra hystrix but that they were out of place given that the growing zone for Lomandra hystrix does not extend further south than Tocal. A closer look revealed it had 2 types of leaves, one with the identifying aspects of Lomandra longifolia and the other with the identifying aspects of Lomandra hystrix. I muttered something along the lines of “crazy bloody mixed up plant” and so CMU – Crazy Mixed Up Form was borne. I went back later in the season to collect seed and was then invited to visit a property on the western side of McCullys Gap at Muswellbrook – I cannot remember the name of the mountain but it was steep and high – the lower levels carried the regular Upper Hunter Form of Lomandra longifolia but when we reached the top we found our beloved CMU Form and I was delighted to know the Putty plants were not the only ones. This is a magnificent plant under cultivation growing up to 1.25m tall and is an excellent low screen or windbreak plant.

The Inconvenient Child Sharyn Killens and Lindsay Lewis This is a very powerful and important story, which tells not only of the denial of identity and acceptance of a child, but also the horror represented by Parramatta and Hay Girls’ Homes, which operated in the sixties. Sharyn Killens was the result of a relationship between a white Australian woman and a black American merchant marine after World War 2. Sharyn’s mother took limited responsibility for her, placing her in foster care (which proved to be neglectful) and then in an orphanage, where she was badly treated, but never publicly acknowledged her as her daughter. Sharyn became a runaway and was expelled from the orphanage into her mother’s care. With her mother’s marriage in her teenage years came a new sense of rejection. She became a street kid in King’s Cross, and was eventually designated uncontrollable and ‘in moral danger’, whereupon she was sent to the harsh institution of the Parramatta Girls’ Home. Intransigence there resulted in removal to the extraordinarily brutal and militaristic Hay Girls’ Home, which had the avowed intention of breaking girls’ spirits. The inmates were not allowed to touch or make eye contact with anyone, including the guards, and were given backbreaking work to do, such as laying concrete paths and then breaking them up when they were set. Sharyn’s story ends well, and can be witnessed on YouTube clips of her meeting her American family after years of being kept in ignorance, and on the 7:30 Report investigation into the Girls’ Homes. This book provides a grim snapshot of hidden aspects of our history, but is also the story of resilience and determination to belong. All books reviewed are from the CWA library. They are put on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder.

On Sunday, 23 April there will be free guided walks to coincide with the 2017 Australian Heritage Festival. The morning walk at Blue Gum Loop in the Upper Williams will commence at 10 am and be led by our local National Parks and Wildlife Volunteer Guides. This walk features outstanding rainforest and blue gums in the World Heritage listed Barrington Tops National Park. Mike Hill from the Forestry Corporation will lead the afternoon walk at Peach Tree Park in the Upper Allyn. A highlight of the day will be a talk given by Dr Cameron Archer, Chair Dungog Regional Tourism, about the cultural and natural history of the local area. Please register by contacting the Dungog Shire Visitors Centre on 4992 2212 or wendyf@dungog.nsw.gov.au Ivan Skaines, Dungog Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Co-ordinator
