Wet but Wonderful 80th Show

I
t was certainly a mixed bag, weather wise during Show week. All the rain and mud on Tuesday & Wednesday led one to believe we were in for a wet and perhaps limited Gresford show this year. But the rain stopped on Thursday and although the Ring events were cancelled on Friday the sun shone brightly and improved the ground conditions so that the Ring programs could go on as normal on Saturday. The weather was beautiful on Saturday to help us celebrate our 80th Gresford Show. The crowds were good and everyone seemed to be happy. What more could you ask for. Country music matriarch, song writer, author and wife of the late Slim Dusty, Joy McKean, opened the Show after the Grand Parade. She had a wonderful afternoon reminiscing about the times when her father was a teacher at Lostock school. Joy also thought that Gresford Show was what real country agricultural shows were all about with a warm & friendly atmosphere. Saturday afternoon’s ring entertainment included Post Splitting finals, Tug-o-War and the thrills of the high flying KAOS Motorcross Bike Team, which the crowds seem to enjoy immensely. The introduction of the Sheep Dog Yard Trials was also a crowd pleaser as was the Dog Drafting. Once again the pavilions did not disappoint with great exhibits, even the Fruit and Vegies had a good display despite the poor growing season. I would like to extend our thanks to all those who helped to make the 80th Gresford Show the fantastic success it was and continues to be. All those who help behind the scenes to make sure things run smoothly and efficiently. To the exhibitors, and all the volunteers in the Rings, pavilions, gate and everywhere in between – we could not run the Show without your help. Already looking forward to next year with the aim of making Gresford Show even better.

It’s—er-resting, at the moment, because of some minor kerfuffle over the projector, or something. But it will be back, as a Cinema. Soon. But–and this is the really interesting bit– the James is to become famous as a Cultural Events Centre. A place where concerts featuring well known artists will come. The whole concept will become Live at The James. As a spectacular first Happening, Vivienne Powel, an Opera singer, has developed a Cabaret Event, featuring three of the 20th Century’s most famous “Divas of Pop”, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, and Doris Day. Vivienne is taking this performance on to Sydney, and then to Broadway. The Cabaret, on June 2nd will be a World Premiere. This is going to be really interesting. Keep up. Live at The James. Doncha just love it?

Still time to get your cart ready for Easter...

resford’s Main Attraction is set to roll on Easter Saturday. Yes, it’s the Billy Cart Derby. Or, as it’s known in Europe, Gravity Racing. Fair dinkum. And some of the world’s most revered motor manufacturers build Gravity Racing Carts. Google it. Porsche, Bentley, I think McLaren, And there are some pretty spectacular private entries too. So, have you got your machine ready for Gresford, on Easter Saturday? If not, then you should be out in the shed, getting a bit ready. It doesn’t take much. An old pram, and some string, a bit of swearing helps. You’ve got two weeks. This is more fun than Grannies well remembered encounter with the mangle, and if you’ve not at least been to watch, then you should. Get to it. Easter Saturday, April 7, in Gresford’s Main Drag. Rain, rain, rain. What a terrible start to the season. Heavy rain washed out the first “Meet & Greet” leaving the Sporting Complex so boggy that it was decided to postpone the event for a fortnight to give the grounds time to dry out and not damage the surface for the cricket finals.
It has been many years since GVFC has had an Under 18’s side. Formed from our 2011 Under 17’s and liberally salted with seasoned “Dungog” players the team has hit the top grade after many years of playing in their grade finals and several Grand Final wins.
A delayed delivery of new training balls compounded the issue but we finally got the teams together on March 21st. The first session always looks a mess as the club tries to balance the teams against available players, training times, available coaches etc but it finally came together and we’re grateful for the patience displayed by the parents and kids.
Previously coached by Dylan and Mick O’Sullivan the team has now to demonstrate that it has earned its title and can deliver the goods. We’re sure they can. There’s a lot of undeveloped talent in this team. Good luck guys.
There are still a few outstanding coach and manager positions to fill but these will be ironed out in the next few weeks. It’s always difficult to find coaches who can make themselves available as it often clashes with work commitments. We’re very fortunate to have so many dedicated supporters.
GVFC accepted the challenge from the Dungog Lions Club and entered a crack team to compete in the “JT Stakes”. Unfortunately the bad weather caused this event to be rescheduled and our crack team had to be filled with substitutes but this didn’t diminish the quality.
Training is every Wednesday. Registrations are still being accepted in teams with less than a full bench of

the team put on a very impressive display of “sportspersonship” and managed to win several events. Whilst not winning the overall event GVFC did manage to take the coveted title of “Best Dressed” team. It was a great day and we sincerely hope the organisers had as much fun as our team did.

GRESFORD BILLY CART DERBY “GUM BOOT TOSS” GVFC will be running the annual Gum Boot Toss on Easter Saturday at the Billy Cart Derby. Come along and vie for the title of “Champion Tosser” and win the Golden Gum Boot. This year there will be separate male/ female age championships with the winners advancing to the grand final toss. We’ll be set up behind the Beatty Hotel. Come along and try your luck.

Tocal Field Days – Community Group Involvement Many people are unaware of the amount of community groups and schools that work together to ensure Tocal Field Days is a success. Tocal Field Days Association is a community group and was formed as an independent and autonomous organisation in charge of managing all aspects of Tocal Field Days within Tocal Agricultural Centre.

Bev Cozard-Bush
In August 2008 the Culture Vulture interview featured the talented local artist Bev Cozad-Bush and her husband, poet Bob Bush, who live in Vacy. We wish to congratulate Bev on her up and coming exhibition The Electric Series to be held at Maitland Regional Art Gallery. In 2004 Bev was commissioned by the Thornton based company Power Serve to paint a collection of industrial items and
equipment that had been used by the company over the previous twenty five years of operation. Company Director Allen Dunlop has loaned the collection, consisting of twenty detailed watercolour paintings, to be displayed at Maitland Regional Art Gallery to 24 June. Allen said “he wanted to capture some of the ‘tools of the trade’ that were disappearing from everyday use and those material items that were iconic to power line construction”.

Bev began painting eleven years ago and since then she has completed art courses at Singleton Tafe and attended art workshops held by celebrated artists. She has been accredited with many awards in local Art Prize Exhibitions, including First for the Watercolour section at Singleton in 2007. Bev has now held three solo exhibitions and last November opened her Studio to the public.

Local people are familiar with Bev’s skilled, realistic paintings of Akubra hats, leather boots and the famous Driza-Bone coats. Also dramatic action poses of galloping horses. Bev says “I enjoy experimenting with different techniques to capture a variety of subjects. My goal is to continue to challenge myself by expanding my ability with water colours and mixed medium.” The Electric Series Exhibition will be officially opened on 14 April at 3pm by Joseph Eisenberg OAM, Director of Maitland Regional Art Gallery, at 230 High St. Maitland. Gresford Public School Breakfast Club As part of our student welfare program, Gresford Public School is keen to establish a Breakfast Club to provide a nourishing start to the day for many of our students who come to school without a healthy breakfast. We have sourced funding and sponsorship to provide food, furniture, appliances and utensils but need the most important component of all – willing volunteers. We would love to provide the service five days a week and therefore would need a group of volunteers prepared to share the load. Students would be served between 8.30am and 8.50am and teachers would be on duty to supervise. Should you have any generous volunteers interested in helping us with this major imitative, established to improve the quality of learning and provide a supportive, caring start to the day, then please phone the school to register your interest or inquire about the program. Landcare Giving Swimming Hole a Face Lift
The town of East Gresford is lucky enough to be situated on the Allyn River which is quite unique. In the middle of the town, at the end of showground road right beside the campground is a most beautiful swimming hole. The campground is used by countless visitors each year – some of whom have been coming to camp beside the river with their families for generations. Over time as a result of floods and heavy usage, the banks of the swimming hole have become degraded and overcome with weeds. The Gresford District Landcare Group has received a grant from the CMA to repair and revegetate the banks of the swimming hole. It will be a pleasure for the Group to help repair and maintain this precious asset for the town of Gresford and all who visit. There will be a working bee at the swimming hole on Saturday 14 April starting at 9.30 with a sausage sizzle to follow. Samantha Johnston Gresford Showgirl 2012 A trainee accountant and part time farmstay hostess is the 2012 Gresford Showgirl. Samantha Johnston pipped three other girls to claim the sash, when the title was announced at the Gresford Art Show Opening on the eve of the actual show in early March. Samantha said she’s very excited to be Showgirl entrants L-R: Elysha Jordan, Jessica Williams, Samantha Johnston, Sarah Hunt selected as Showgirl for the 80th year, and thanked the judges, the other girls and her family and friends. She also said she was proud of the community, and had a lot of fun. Jess is a keen campdrafter. And with youth thankful to the local area for giving her the opportunity. Dungog Dietetic Service Update

CALLING ALL COOKS! The 2012 Tocal Field Days ‘Bake or Burn’ cooking competition is now open for entries. With a new category for ages 12 – 16 cooks of all ages are encouraged to come and be a part of this event.
The Dungog Dietetic Service is part of the Hunter New England Area Health Service and is provided free of charge. This service provides support for adults, children and their carers residing in and outside the towns of Dungog, Gresford, Vacy, Paterson, Clarencetown. Dietitians have clinical training to advise on diets to help with a variety of medical conditions such as malnutrition, heart disease, cancers, wounds, gastro-intestinal diseases, food allergies, and obesity.
Held on the stage in the Good Food & Wine hall on a mobile kitchen, entrants must prepare and cook their dish for 3 judges. Prizes for each section are $250 gift vouchers from Kitchen Gear at East Maitland.
If you answer yes to any of these questions, you should consider a referral to the Dietetic Service. • Have you lost weight without wanting to in the last 6 months? • Have you had a poor appetite and/or poor oral intake for more than 2 weeks?
Event Manager Wendy Franklin said the contest was a popular addition to the Field Days last year so will be back in an expanded format this year.

Country Women’s Association of NSW
Gresford Branch is a grass roots branch of CWA of NSW which was formed in 1922. We celebrate our 90th birthday this year. We are part of CWA of Australia (CWA of A). The Association is affiliated with the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), which involves women from over 70 countries. This Association has “observer status” at the United Nations. We are a Charity. Our meetings include discussion on our current Country of Study, Promotion of Primary Products, Australian Flora and Fauna, Handicraft, Cookery and Cultural activities.
Gresford Show Catering Thank you to CWA members and helpers and also to our patrons who supported us, we appreciate it. Land Cookery Competition Hunter River Group semi-finals were held at Merriwa. Successful Gresford Branch members were Betty Kelehear, 1st with Sultana Cake and Valarie Smith, 1st in Boiled Fruit Cake, 3rd with Tomato Sauce. These ladies will now compete at the State finals in May.

Agricultural/Environment (Ag/En) The Emu is our Fauna study for 2012. Our Ag/En Officer Lyn Tunin stated the Emu’s name is Latin for ‘fast footed New Hollander’.
Book Club will meet on Saturday 14th April. Discussion will be on ‘The Hare with the Amber Eyes’. Author Edmund Duvall takes us into the history of his ancestors. Cultural with Officer Jan Godwin. Members attended the Civic Theatre for a ‘Tribute to the South Pacific’. We were joined by members of the Bowling Club ladies. Notes from the Gresford Community Group – March 2012 Community Health Centre: reported ongoing discussions with HNEH and also with Gresford/Paterson Health Consultative Committee members who have indicated a wish to work in parallel with the GCG in an endeavour to retain and improve community health/medical facilities for the Gresford area.
