2020 Gresford Show The 2020 Gresford Show was possibly the last of the large public events to go ahead in March. Although the skies were dull on the second day the entertainment was definitely not. The Hot Wheels Stunt team along with the Ag bike demonstration, post splitting and Bullock rides kept the crowds smiling through the intermittent showers. Unfortunately we are waving the checkered flag over the 2020 Gresford Billy Cart Derby. With the new regulations around COVID-19 we must act in the interests of public safety and to protect the community, so the billy cart derby is cancelled. We are obviously devastated not to be holding our 21st anniversary event, and want to thank all our sponsors, volunteers for their commitment to date. We are also thinking of all our small community groups and charities that are supported through this event. We hope this period of uncertainty passes quickly and encourage everyone when it does to continue visiting the country festivals and small communities of our region when you can, as every bit of support counts. The community are asked to, wherever possible, communicate with council by phone or email. Development applications and construction certificate applications can be lodged by email and payment made by credit card over the telephone. It is intended that there may be some limitations resulting from reduced staff numbers at times but that all functions of council will be undertaken at this time.

Fenced for posterity Friday the 13th March saw Scott Gardner presented with the cheque for the construction and completion of the fence around the burial place of Oliver and Harriet Joliffe at Carrabolla. Present were Tracey Norman (former mayor who donated her salary to Council for community projects of which the Gresford Historical Society was a recipient), Paul Wright representing the Gresford Historical Society and Kingsley Joliffe representing the family and friends of the Joliffe family. Our thanks must go to those who donated materials and money to construct this project. It has been built out of galvanised steel with the hope it will see out at least 100 years plus. Now that the graves are protected work will be done to remount the headstones that have come adrift due to the ravages of time and cattle rubbing on them. A special thanks must go to the to Mr Chris Harris and the Harris family (who own the property) for allowing us to complete this project. For without their approval it would not have occurred. On the Shelves by Glenda Smith Beside Myself

This novel deals intriguingly with issues of identity, mental health and family stresses. It is told from the point of view of an identical twin who is dominant over her sister. She is seen as the smart, popular and reliable one of the two, and often plays tricks on her more gullible sister. They play a joint trick on a neighbour by swapping their hair styles and demeanour to make her think they are each other. The trick backfires when their mother accepts the change and perpetuates it, seeing Helen’s insistence that she isn’t Ellie as a tiresome game. What may seem a flimsy narrative thread is effectively done, and shows how powerful expectations can be in guiding treatment of people – the old Pygmalion effect, or a self-fulfilling prophecy. The formerly clumsy and undependable Ellie becomes the leader, recognised by teachers, family and schoolmates as capable and consistent, while the formerly competent Helen is patronised and scolded by those around her. Helen’s life (as Ellie) spirals downward when she is rejected by her family in her adolescence, but there are also issues of depression and mental illness that beset both sisters. This is a very thought-provoking novel.

Gresford Show 2020
The weather was perfect and the grounds looked a picture with the green grass cover on the first day of the Gresford Show. The horse rings had an unprecedented number of entries in what looked to be a fantastic start to the show. The next day, however, was a different picture as grey clouds and showering conditions rolled in along with some uncertainty if the show would proceed or not as we received the news that the Sydney Royal Show had been cancelled. But the show did proceed and although the skies were dull the entertainment was definitely not. The Hot Wheels Stunt team along with the Ag bike demonstration, post splitting and Bullock rides kept the crowds smiling through the intermittent showers. Paint the Town Teal – Ovarian Cancer Morning Tea fundraiser
The Gresford tennis ladies did an amazing job hosting the Ovarian Cancer morning tea on Saturday 29th March at St Anne's hall. February was Ovarian Cancer month and $787.40 was raised on the day. With a beautiful sunny morning 50 ladies and gents enjoyed home made cakes,slices and sandwiches whilst listening to our guest speaker. Kathy Bonham Smith is a registered nurse who spoke about her trips to Kenya. We learnt about her work with an orphanage and life in Kenya. Colourful African bags made by the local Kenyan women were on sale on the day. Many thanks to everyone who generously donated to the cause and to the Anglican ladies guild for the use of the hall.

Gresford's street trees It is now 10 years since the Gresford and District Community Group embarked on a street planting project to enhance the streetscape of Gresford and East Gresford. We encouraged all property owners with a grass verge outside their homes to allow the Community Group to plant Crepe Myrtles Sioux (Largerstroemia). I’m sure that you will all agree that even through adverse weather conditions they have been a great asset and are suitable trees for our nature strips. We would now like to fill in the gaps and are inviting expressions of interest for those of you who would like a free order of crepe myrtles, stakes and mesh guards. Please note the distance apart that they have been planted. You can then gauge how many you will need. Arboretum Autumn Update brimming with ideas for new understorey plants and rock and log habitat for lizards. We have plenty of new trees and shrubs to replace losses, and the aim is to get the ground covered with vegetation to reduce the need for weeding. If you have a minute pop in for a look. Penny Kater

On the down side, the native Cedar Tip Moth has found the Red Cedars and has destroyed the growing tips. This is the reason that Red Cedar can’t be grown in plantations as once the form of the tree is destroyed it is unlikely to produce a good timber log. However with a bit of judicious pruning we may get a half decent tree out of ours.
Well you can guess why there was no summer update. What a struggle it was. It has made the change to green all the better. Hunter Medical Research Institute at the first Science Hub event The recent event of the Paterson Allyn Williams Science Hub for 2020 was off to an excellent start. Over 30 people were there to hear about the inspiring research that is being done at the internationally acclaimed Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). After an introductory talk about the Institute, Professor Lisa Wood described her research that showed the connection between diet and asthma. The countries that have significantly more asthmatics are those with a western-type diet.

So she presented a very convincing argument for the recommended daily intake of 5 vegetables and 2 fruit. Gresford News has recieved daily COVID-19 media updates from Hunter New England Health District since March 16. At the time of printing we have data up to Friday March 27. In those 11 days the number of confirmed cases rose from 5 to 167 (see graph at left). Four of the confirmed cases were from the Dungog Local Government area.

The Hunter New England Health District has opened another COVID-19 clinic at Manning Hospital. As of Monday 30 March, a clinic will operate at Manning Hospital from 8am to 4pm, 7 days a week. Anyone wishing to access the clinic should call (02) 6592 9850 in operating hours for phone screening prior to attending. Other COVID-19 clinics in the region: Maitland Hospital, 10am-4pm, Mon-Fri • John Hunter Hospital, 8am-10.30pm, 7 days • Calvary Mater Newcastle, 8am-4pm, Mon-Fri. Preseason suspended due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) As a result of the decision by FFA on the 17th March to cease all levels of football below the A League, GVFC will be following and adhering to these
guidelines effective of that date until 14th April or further advice. All teams that have already begun training have been instructed to cease at this point. Preseason games have been cancelled. Australia, like the rest of the world, is experiencing an unprecedented situation from the pandemic which is rapidly developing and changing daily. Although this current news is disappointing, we still hold out hope that the 2020 season may be able to start in some sort of capacity at some stage. Our committee has worked extremely hard to get the season up and running and we are as disappointed as everyone. We will continue to prepare for the season ahead subject to further FFA and government announcements. GVFC take the health, safety and welfare of our players, volunteers, families and community very seriously and we trust that all of you do the same.
