From the Principal Dear members of the Terrace Family, Welcome to the final edition of The Terracian for 2025. This has been an extraordinary year, as the College celebrated 150 years of providing a quality Catholic Education in the Edmund Rice Tradition.

As is always the case, this edition of The Terracian is filled with special stories, updates. events and achievements from across the Terrace Family. It also captures a number of highlights from our Terrace 150 celebrations, providing a wonderful reminder of our sesquicentennial year in print.

Amongst the 150-focused articles, you will find information and recollections of the launch of our history book, titled Terrace: 150 Years, 150 Stories, as well as the Terrace 150 Student Day, Staff Spirituality Day, and the TLG Luncheon. Finally, we look back on our 150th year, recapping all of the moments that made it so special.

The talent and diversity of skills and interests within the Terrace Family are again highlighted in this issue.

Stories include a Senior reflection from our 2025 College Captain, an introduction to our 2026 College Leaders and a review of this year’s House Choir, along with a range of other Cultural updates. There is also a focus on the many talented sportsmen in the Terrace Family, including a wrap of the 2025 Inter-House Track and Field Carnival.

Other significant College events to feature include the annual GT on the Green, and the Celebration of Excellence evening. We also see a feature on student achievements and news from around the College grounds.

Finally, this edition features a magnificent story on the influence and impact of the dads of Terrace, and a profile on Terrace’s 31st College Principal, Mr Damien Fall.

My time as College Principal is rapidly drawing to a conclusion.

It has been a privilege to serve this College, firstly as a teacher and House Dean in the 1980s and 1990s and then returning as College Principal in 2015. My 11-year tenure as College Principal has been an extraordinary honour. I thank the Terrace Family – past, present and future – for the overwhelming sense of welcome and support that has been afforded to me and my family during my time as Principal. I feel privileged to know that I have played a role in guiding and advancing this great College.

My final words are to say thank you, good luck, God bless and goodbye.

by Terrace parent, Ms Simone Desmarchelier.

Terrace witnessed a series of historic moments throughout 2025. The opening of our new Years 5 and 6 precinct, Margaret Rice Place, and the introduction of our 10th House Group, Nagle, are just two such stories profiled in this edition.

The work of the Gregory Terrace Foundation has continued throughout 2025. The generous support of the Terrace family was again displayed on Giving Day, when over $400,000 was raised. As usual, the Terrace Old Boys have been an active presence at the College during 2025 with many reunions and events held throughout the year.

Celebration of Excellence On Tuesday 18 November, the Terrace Family came together at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre for the annual Celebration of Excellence. Rounding out another enormous academic year, this evening recognises the outstanding achievements of our Terracians in all aspects of College life – in the classroom, on the sporting field, on stage and in the schoolyard. It was truly a night to remember, made all the more special by the variety of musical performances that decorated our programme.

Congratulations to all award winners, and to all those who supported and organised an evening which highlights the pursuit of excellence at Terrace. We recognise and celebrate the efforts and achievements of our Gentlemen of Terrace, who have contributed greatly to our College community in this milestone year.

The First Semester at Margaret Rice Place

By Mr Brendan Ganley Our Margaret Rice Place journey for Years 5 and 6 students has begun, and it has been truly amazing to be in such a precinct. Semester 2 has been an incredible end to a long chapter of planning and construction. Likewise, it has been an exciting beginning to the next pages of our story within this facility.

It has been great to see how settled our staff and students have become following the transition from main campus to Margaret Rice Place (fondly known as MRP). Boys in Years 5 and 6 are loving many of the features that their new home has to offer, and the space is genuinely stunning. From the very first day, the experience has been memorable – with students being ceremoniously farewelled from main campus via a community tunnel and then supported by our neighbours in Year 9 at Waterford Place on the walk up the hill. There were many moments that won’t soon be forgotten. Our first week at MRP culminated with our Opening Liturgy which was a special time that saw our precinct being blessed

by Archbishop Mark Coleridge.

Our staff and students have been essential in creating a warm and caring space for teaching and learning. So far, students have consistently enjoyed the newfound learning spaces, including classrooms and break out areas, and the enhancement to their learning with new facilities such as the Library and STEAM lab. Other favourites include the tuckshop and access to Carrick across the street. Having a variety of spaces for our youngest students has been fantastic. For staff, the vibrant and modern environment has been helping to foster creativity in teaching, while giving our students the best opportunities to learn.

A vital component of the Margaret Rice Place transition has been maintaining connections with students on the main campus. To facilitate this, Years 5 and 6 students attend their House Assemblies, College Captains have been visiting every Wednesday, and Buddies and House Leaders have attended during PC time. From my perspective, the best moment so far has

been seeing the Year 11 Buddies attend Year 5 class masses in the Chapel. It is incredibly special for them to celebrate mass with our Year 5 students.

With the movement to MRP, we have continued in the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, but our staff and students have now been able to learn about the inspiration for Edmund, his mother, Margaret. Margaret showed Edmund how to open our hearts to all – a phrase that we have used as our base for Margaret Rice Place.

A big thank you to the support of the parents with this transition and the processes that we have put in place.

There have been many changes, and parents and students have very supportive in adapting to the move and being a part of this exciting chapter for Terrace. It has been quite a surreal start to our journey at Margaret Rice Place and a journey we are looking forward to starting the new school year with our next cohort of Year 5 students.

To the Fore

By Cooper Dooley, 2025 College Captain For the Seniors, it seems crazy to think it was a little over a year ago that we were wearing those short-sleeved grey shirts each day. It feels like so much has happened in the past year.

We have all grown significantly and without the challenges and difficulties we have faced, we wouldn’t be the tight-knit group we are today.

And whilst it's hard to accept that our time at Terrace will soon be a moment of the past, I know our cohort will take it in our stride and face the challenge like every other we have had this year.

I know we will continue to support each other, be grateful for all the times we have had, and be thankful for all the support we have been given.

As we approach the close of 2025, it is difficult to capture in words just how extraordinary this year has been. From the moment we returned to school, we knew this would be a year like no other, and it has exceeded every expectation.

So, with that, I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the Seniors. Thanks to all the amazing staff and teachers who have provided us with support in and outside the classroom for so many years. To our fellow students, thank you for buying in and standing with us through the journey this year. And to our families who supported us from the sidelines, early mornings and late evenings – thank you so much, we couldn’t have made it through the year without you.

Our College’s historic 150th anniversary provided the perfect backdrop for a year filled with unforgettable moments.

We have witnessed the Terrace spirit shine brightest when it mattered most: like when we stood out in the rain, war cries strong as ever as we supported the Rugby at BBC, or when everyone rallied for the World’s Greatest Shave to raise awareness for leukemia in Term 2. And finally, when we turned up to the Volleyball premiership decider and we outnumbered, outcheered and outplayed Nudgee to win the pennant for 2025. All throughout the year, there were moments we will never forget and memories I am sure we will cherish for years to come.

As we prepare to close this chapter, we do so with gratitude and hope. We carry forward the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and the memories we’ve made together. And while we say goodbye as students, we look forward to returning as Old Boys, forever connected to this remarkable College.

Thank you, Terrace Family, for everything. This year, and these years, will stay with us always.

2026 College Captains

By Miss Meghann Collins Term 4 at Terrace stands as a bridge between closing chapters and new beginnings. This sentiment reigns true for our Senior cohorts, as Year 12 students begin their next journey as Old Boys, and Terracians in Year 11 start a fresh page as leaders of the College. It is a special privilege to see these Gentlemen of Terrace take such changes in their stride, as they flourish into young men of knowledge, humility and wisdom.

Determining who will step into student leadership roles is far from a straightforward process, with many highly capable young leaders showcasing their potential. Each year, the criterion for these positions is informed by the College values and motto – Servire Deo Sapere – To Serve God is to be Wise.

Samuel Drewe, Don Gambaro, Callum Harris, Harrison Kathage and Gus Varvari are the five Terracians who have been selected to lead the College in 2026. Full of enthusiasm, spirit and excitement for what lies ahead, we have no doubt that these young men will fulfil their duties and represent the Red and Black with pride.

“You don’t have to be friends with everyone — just be friendly.”

This simple piece of advice from a friend has stuck with incoming College Captain, Sam, for a number of years. Described as a standout moment in his own Terrace story, this phrase has and continues to inform his approach to leadership as a student, friend and member of the College community.

“At Terrace, you are surrounded by so many different people that it can be easy just to focus on your close mates. But what my friend taught me is that the real leadership and real friendship come from how you treat everyone, not just the people you know.”

Joining the Terrace Family as a bright-eyed Year 5 student in 2019, Sam has always held the College Captain positions, and their subsequent occupants, in the highest regard. Leaders such as 2020 Captain, Sam Dutton and the 2025 leadership group have forged lasting legacies that Samuel seeks to carry into the next stage of his own captaincy.

“The care of older students inspired the belief in me that I too could have a positive influence on other Terracians as a College Leader. I am excited to have a chance to be that friendly face for someone else.”

Sam is extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with and give back to the Terrace Family as College Captain in 2026. He sees it as a unique chance to connect with others, and promote a culture of diversity, participation and belonging.

2026 COLLEGE VICE CAPTAIN What inspired you to apply for a 2026 Leadership role?

Throughout my time here at Terrace, I have been fortunate enough to learn from some exceptional leaders, whose example has profoundly influenced who I am today. Early in my journey at the College I realised that leadership isn’t defined by grand gestures. In fact, it is often the little things that make others feel included. My motivation in applying was simple: to give back to a community that has given me so much and to help foster that same sense of belonging and connection for others.

Has there been a standout moment in your Terrace story so far? What was it, and why does it resonate with you?

I have had the opportunity to participate in so many aspects of College life. However, a moment that resonated with me the most was when I made my GPS Football 1st XI debut in Year 10 in 2024, playing against Churchie, and I was able to wear the jersey that so many great men have worn before me. I had always looked up to the 1st XI Football players as role models, so becoming a part of the history of that team is something that words cannot describe.

What inspired you to apply for a 2026 Leadership role?

My parents have been the biggest influence on me throughout my life and continue to be to this very day.

They are the ones that have shaped me into who I am. I also think valuing the past at our College is a major factor.

I remember seeing the College Captains when I was in Year 5 set the standard and inspire those around them. It is something I will never forget. From then on, I have always wanted to create my own chapter in our history alongside my cohort, to make sure 2026 is not only a successful year, but one that carries forward the legacy of Terrace.

What does it mean to you to be a College Leader and role model for the school?

For me, being a College Vice Captain is one of the greatest honours I could receive, and I am deeply grateful. This has been a dream of mine since starting at Terrace in Year 5, as I looked up to past Captains. To now have the chance to build upon their stories is truly an invaluable opportunity.

The people within this community have genuinely become a second family to me over the years, a family I take great pride in being a part of. I am committed to instilling the same sense of pride I feel into our newest members of the College.

2026 What are you most looking forward to during your Senior year?

Personally, I am looking forward to my final year playing Cricket with my mates and am excited for the memories that we will create together both on and off the field. I am also looking forward to enjoying our last year together as a 2026 cohort, at a place that’s like a second home to me. Being able to see my mates every day is something that I will always be grateful for.

Is there anything that the current Captains have taught you, that you wish to carry on in 2026?

Something I have understood from the current Captains this year, is the value of staying together as a core leadership group, especially through challenging times. Additionally, being able to lean on others outside of the immediate leadership group is something that I felt the Captains did very well this year.

What inspired you to apply for a 2026 Leadership role?

A pivotal moment for me at Terrace was when I helped cook breakfast with the community at Eddie’s Van. That experience opened my eyes to the real challenges many people face and made me realise how powerful small acts of service can be. It taught me that leadership isn’t just about participating, it is about stepping up with purpose to make a genuine difference in the lives of others. That morning inspired me to apply for a College Leadership role, because I want to continue serving my community, giving back, and helping others feel supported and valued.

What inspired you to apply for a 2026 Leadership role?

I know it sounds a bit cliché to say I’ve looked up to the College Captains since Year 5, but it’s true. The way they carried themselves – with humility, care, and genuine pride in the College – has left a real impression on me. Over the years, I’ve realised how much impact a good leader can have just by being approachable, consistent, and present. Sam Dutton, for example, set the tone for my idea of leadership when he came up to me in Year 6, remembered my name, had a chat, and was just a good bloke. I have always tried to do that in my own way, but now I feel ready to take that next step and serve the community that has given me so much. A special shoutout to my close mates who also gave me the help and motivation to apply for the role. Thank you for believing in me.

What does it mean to you to be a College Leader and role model for the school?

Some of the most important qualities I identify with are being humble and kind. I believe that leadership isn’t just about giving direction, it’s about listening, caring and helping others feel valued. I always try to treat everyone with respect and fairness, and I believe kindness creates a positive environment where everyone can do their best.

I will continue to show that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in our College community.

Has there been a standout moment in your Terrace story so far? What was it, and why does it resonate with you?

A standout moment in my Terrace journey so far has been the Year 9 Immersion to the Top End in Darwin. It was an incredible experience where everyone truly came together, supporting one another and forming new friendships with boys I hadn’t really connected with before. Those relationships have continued to grow and have become an important part of my Terrace experience. Visiting places like Berry Springs and Nitmiluk Gorge was unforgettable, but it was the time spent with First Nations communities that really stayed with me. Listening to their stories and learning about their deep connection to the land gave me a new sense of appreciation for culture, respect, and perspective. It reminded me how important it is to stay grounded, to value peoples experiences, and to always approach others with empathy and humility.

2026 COLLEGE VICE CAPTAIN

What are you most looking forward to during your Senior year?

I am most looking forward to making 2026 the best of the best. Following an incredible 150th year, it is up to us to really keep the momentum going and live the legacy.

With our recent attendance at the GPS Track and Field Carnival, the energy was high, the boys showed up in droves, and we gave everything for the Red and Black.

That’s exactly what I want 2026 to be about – carrying that same energy into everything we do and making sure every student feels part of something bigger.

Is there anything that the current Captains have taught you, that you wish to carry on in 2026?

The 2025 leaders have left an impression on this College that will last for a lifetime. Their consideration, combined with their love for Terrace, has shown me what genuine leadership looks like. They have led with humility, always putting others first and making sure every student feels seen and valued. I really admire how they have built such a strong sense of unity within the school, and that’s something I’d love to carry forward in 2026 – leading with heart, gratitude, and a real commitment to the Terrace community.

Introducing the Senior Class of 2033 On Wednesday 22 October, the Terrace Family welcomed our next cohort of Year 5 students at the annual Orientation Evening – held for the very first time at the newly opened primary school campus, Margaret Rice Place. Throughout the evening, Terracians and their families had the opportunity to explore these exceptional facilities, learn about the College curriculum and co-curricular activities, and connect with their 2026 Buddies and other Senior students. It was wonderful to have so many excited new faces on campus. We look forward to seeing these Gentlemen of Terrace in the Red and Black next year!

Honouring the Legacy of Dr Michael Carroll

By Mr Damien Fall In 1983, College Principal Brother Tony White employed a beginning teacher with a fresh face and full head of hair, following a brief conversation that was the 80s version of a job interview. That young man was entering his first ever job as a teacher, but as a St Laurence’s Old Boy and a young man full of enthusiasm for his chosen vocation, he was strongly aligned to our charism and ready to serve the Terrace Family. The young Michael Carroll went on to serve St Joseph’s College for the next 11 years, teaching Mathematics and holding roles including Year 9 Coordinator and inaugural Barrett House Dean while coaching extensively across the cocurricular program. Those formative years and Michael’s work ethic and passion for the vocation set him up for years of success that he would never have imagined when he first met with Br White.

In the 20-plus years that followed, Michael went on to serve the communities of Peter Claver College, Marist Rosalie and St Patrick’s College Shorncliffe, learning the intricacies of senior leadership and becoming a deeply experienced and respected College Principal. There was no surprise when, in 2015, that beginning teacher, now known as Dr Carroll, returned to his first school as its 30th Principal. In recent weeks, Michael

has commented on how ‘right’ it has felt that his educational career started and will now finish in the same place after 22 years of loyal service. With a combined total of 27 years as a Principal and 44 years in education, it is no doubt time to slow down a little.

At the recent recent Valedictory Dinner, at which Michael farewelled his last group of graduating Seniors, a photo was taken of every current Year 12 father in the room who was a student during Michael’s first stint at Terrace, alongside his graduating son. The stage was overflowing and a mere glimpse of the thousands of lives that Michael has positively impacted in his time as an educator. During this time, Michael

has celebrated the highest of highs and walked with families and staff during their lowest moments. Always front of mind for Michael was the need to put others before self in the spirit of our founder, Edmund Rice, and the Christian Brothers who followed.

His commitment, compassion and courage will be fondly remembered.

When we accept positions of responsibility, we hope to leave the place better than we found it – the concept of legacy is an important aspect of any Principalship, and there are multiple achievements of which Michael can be proud. He has overseen the rebuild of our Mt Sion building, guided us through a Tennyson flood event, led the College during the COVID pandemic, introduced a greater focus on the art of pedagogy in the classroom, acquired and developed our green space, gym and carpark at Carrick, led the procurement and renovation of the former Pindari hostel into the beautiful Margaret Rice Place for our Years 5 and 6 students, and driven the introduction of our tenth House, Nagle. There are many more highlights, but that is a reasonable snapshot of the gifts that Michael leaves us with. How fitting that Michael was able to celebrate the College’s 150th anniversary as his final year.

As important as the physical improvements at the College have been, as have the personal touches Michael has brought during his tenure.

In a community that values strong relationships, the Terrace Family looks to a leader who is approachable,

humble, and strongly aligned to the values that draw parents and caregivers to send their sons to Terrace. Michael has been all these things as he has led the College calmly but with a fierce determination and clear vision. All in the community are deeply indebted to Michael and will certainly miss his presence - the front gate on Rogers Street will never quite be the same again without his familiar frame.

One of Michael’s favourite written pieces is the Irish Blessing, so in closing, on behalf of the Terrace Family, I offer these beautiful words to him as he looks forward to 2026 and all the joys of retirement.

May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you; May you see your children’s children.

May you be poor in misfortune, Rich in blessings, May you know nothing but happiness From this day forward.

May the road rise to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home And may the hand of a friend always be near.

Dr Carroll’s Community Farewell Members of the Terrace Family gathered on Sunday 16 November at the Tennyson Playing Fields for a memorable afternoon of celebration and community, acknowledging the outstanding contributions of none other than Dr Michael Carroll.

Rounding out an iconic chapter in our Terrace story, the afternoon was coloured by the unmistakable Red and Black spirit, that saw past and present families, staff and friends express their gratitude for Dr Carroll’s dedication and leadership. The College also had the opportunity to present Michael and his family with a special memento, honouring his service and the lasting impact he leaves on the Terrace community.

Welcome Mr Damien Fall

By Miss Annabelle Locke Earlier this year, we shared the exciting news of Mr Damien Fall's appointment as College Principal, commencing in January 2026. A highly regarded member of the Terrace Family and an accomplished educational leader, Damien brings nearly three decades of experience across four Catholic schools, including three in the Edmund Rice tradition. His depth of experience, particularly in guiding young men, families, and staff with care, purpose, and a commitment to the values of knowledge, humility and wisdom, positions him well to lead Terrace into its next chapter.

Throughout his career, Damien has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to forming young men of character, drawing on his background in both teaching and pastoral care. Beginning as a science and mathematics teacher, he quickly established himself as a leader who balances clear expectations with compassion and practicality. Over almost 30 years in Catholic Education,

he has held significant leadership roles that have strengthened school culture, enhanced wellbeing structures and built supportive environments where staff and students can thrive.

Damien's academic and professional credentials reflect his dedication to continuous improvement and thoughtful management. He holds a Master of Educational Leadership, a Bachelor of Applied Science, a Graduate Diploma in Education, and, most recently, a Graduate Diploma from the Australian Institute of Company Directors. These achievements highlight not only his expertise but also his commitment to lifelong learning, a value he models for the young men entrusted to his care.

Since joining Terrace in 2008, Damien has made a profound impact on the College through his guidance across multiple roles, including student formation, pastoral care, staffing and strategic development. His presence is described by staff and students as steady, approachable, and deeply invested in the wellbeing of our community. Whether supporting staff through professional growth, guiding young men through moments of challenge, or helping shape the direction of College initiatives, Damien's influence has been consistent and positive.

A hallmark of Damien's leadership at Terrace has been his ability to listen - not simply to respond, but to understand. This approach has helped foster a culture of trust and collaboration, where students feel seen, families feel supported, and staff feel valued. His calm manner, combined with a strong moral compass and a profound belief in the potential of every Terracian, has earned him the respect of those across the College.

As Damien prepares to step into the role of Principal in 2026, he brings an authentic understanding of Terrace's identity - its history, its rhythms, its strengths, and the hopes of the families who choose to be part of this community. Just as importantly, he brings a future-focused mindset, ensuring that the College continues to evolve while staying anchored in the Edmund Rice tradition.

By Mr Christopher Holley The Waterford Journey is the flagship program for Year 9 students at Waterford Place. It is a year-long, immersive experience that seamlessly blends spiritual and personal development with academic growth. Throughout the year, boys are equipped with skills, knowledge, and competencies to enable them to live a life of meaning, full alignment of education, formation, and faith in an inspiring community.

The program draws upon our understanding of the developmental stage of our boys and offers specific experiences designed to challenge their sense of self in relation to their wider places of interaction. It is built on key pillars central to each boy's growth and development.

The Calling

In February at Tennyson, students and their families gathered for a profound evening ceremony that marked the beginning of this transformative year.

Here, each boy was formally called into the program, not just as an individual, but as part of a brotherhood embarking on a shared journey toward manhood. Importantly, students publicly acknowledged the vital role their parents have played in bringing them to this threshold, creating a powerful moment of gratitude and transition that set the tone for the year ahead.

Rites of Passage

At the heart of the Waterford Journey sits a year-long experience acknowledging and celebrating each student's shift into adulthood. Through intentional conversations, meaningful experiences, and connections with positive adult role models, boys navigate this crucial transition with purpose and support, building self-awareness and discovering their unique strengths.

The Abyss

In the final week of Term 4, our Year 9 cohort faced perhaps their greatest challenge yet – the solo experience.

Across three separate venues, boys confronted not only challenging weather and demanding conditions, but also the depths of their own resilience and courage. Each student emerged from this experience with a profound sense of what they are capable of when pushed beyond their perceived limits.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Outdoor Education staff, support staff, and our Waterford Journey teachers who made The Abyss a resounding success.

The Homecoming

On Friday 28 November, students were welcomed home in a morning ceremony where classes gathered to acknowledge the journey they had walked together.

This powerful moment of reunion and recognition culminated in a cohort liturgy that celebrated not just individual growth, but the collective transformation of an entire year level. The boys who returned were not the same ones who had departed – they stood taller, spoke with greater confidence, and carried themselves with the quiet assurance of young men who had been tested and had risen to meet the challenge.

Although students have been separated from the College's main campus throughout 2025, there has remained a strong continuum of excellence in teaching and learning.

As we reflect on this year's Waterford Journey, we are profoundly grateful for the growth witnessed in each young man. Year 9 Immersions The final weeks of Term 3 see Year 9 students venture beyond the comforts of Terrace, to explore and experience the world around them as part of the Immersion program. A highlight of their Waterford year, our young men are invited to participate in a variety of learning opportunities – both locally and internationally – that challenge them to think critically, learn from different cultures and act in service of others.

In 2025, Year 9 Terracians travelled to locations such as Lake Maroon, Central Australia, Cape York, Fiji, Timor Leste and Cambodia, with other students opting to work with local organisations in Brisbane.

Our Journey through GT150

By Mr Jack Lorimer 2025 has been a truly momentous year for St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, as our Terrace Family came together to celebrate 150 years of history, tradition, and spirit. From the Terrace 150 Community Mass in February to GT on the Green in October, this milestone year has been defined by connection – to our past, to one another, and to the enduring values that make Terrace such a remarkable community.

As the College marked its sesquicentenary, the Terrace 150 Committee had the privilege of curating a calendar that both honoured our heritage and celebrated the vibrancy of Terrace today. The Terrace 150 Community Mass set the tone for the year. It was a chance to look back on where we began in 1875, and to look forward with pride and purpose. From there, the celebrations only grew, encompassing a blend of tradition and togetherness that perfectly reflected the shared Identity of the Terrace Family.

Highlights of the year included the Terrace 150 Gala Ball, a night that brought together generations of Old Boys, parents, staff, and friends for an unforgettable evening at The Star. The GT on the Green Long Lunch returned bigger than ever, uniting hundreds of

community members in a celebration of friendship and belonging. The Terrace 150 Staff Reunion saw both current and past staff from all corners of the College come together in true Terrace spirit – laughter, music, and the unmistakable hum of camaraderie filling the air.

Throughout the year, we also paid tribute to the many people who have shaped Terrace over the last 150 years – our Christian Brothers, educators, and the countless volunteers who have given their time, energy, and heart to the College. Every event, big or small, reflected the collective contribution of this extraordinary community.

From historical exhibitions and digital storytelling to merchandise launches and commemorative publications, every detail was crafted to honour the past while celebrating the present.

When reflecting on Terrace’s 150 years, it would be reminisce not to also acknowledge that 2025 also marks 150 years since the Christian Brothers arrived in Queensland. The first three Christian Brothers arrived in Queensland in 1875, Brother Joseph Barrett, Brother Stanislaus Nunan and Brother Brendan Nugent, and together they formed the first Christian Brothers community in Queensland on 2 July. Their initial mission began at a house in Fortitude Valley, before they established the first Catholic boys’ secondary school in the colony – St Joseph’s College, at the Pugin Chapel.

As we close this chapter, we do so with immense gratitude. The Terrace 150 celebrations reminded us that while buildings may change and time may pass, the heart of Terrace, the people, remains constant. The unwavering sense of belonging, generosity, and pride that defines this community continues to strengthen with each passing year.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in this historic milestone. It has been a privilege to celebrate 150 years of Terrace with you - and to look forward with excitement to the next 150.

150 Years, 150 Stories

By Miss Annabelle Locke When historian Sophie Church first set foot on campus, she was told something that stayed with her: "Terrace is a school of stories." It was both a simple truth and an enormous challenge.

How do you honour a community shaped by 150 years of memories, milestones, characters, and change?

The task ahead required not just research, but a genuine understanding of the College's spirit. Sophie spent months immersed in archives, handwritten records, old photographs, publications, and wider Brisbane history to piece together the evolution of Terrace. Yet, the deeper she went, the more she realised that the heart of the College could never be captured by facts alone; it lived in the experiences of the people who had and still call Terrace home.

To honour that idea, Sophie undertook an extensive series of oral histories with past and present members of the Terrace Family. Students, Old Boys, teachers, parents, and longserving staff generously shared their memories - classroom anecdotes, reflections on sport and culture, challenging moments, and stories of friendship and brotherhood. These conversations added richness, insight and humanity to the historical record, revealing not just what happened, but how it shaped the people of Terrace.

This inspired the book's structure: 150 individual stories arranged within ten eras of the College's development.

Each section opens with an introduction that sets the scene for its time - its challenges, triumphs, and defining social influences - followed by a curated selection of stories that showcase the energy, resilience, humour, and evolving identity of Terrace since 1875.

The publication offers glimpses into academic life, significant events, traditions, co-curricular achievements and pivotal turning points. Together,

these stories form a vivid portrait of Terrace's first 150 years, told through the voices of those who lived them.

After two years of research, writing, editing, design, and collaboration among staff, Old Boys, and community contributors, the project came to life in August with the official launch of the Terrace 150 History Book.

The event was both a celebration and a moment of gratitude. Sophie reflected on the privilege of hearing and preserving so many experiences, while outgoing College Principal Dr Michael Carroll spoke to the importance of capturing the College's legacy at such a significant moment. It was also an opportunity to thank all who contributed - from archivists and volunteers to the many who shared their reflections. Their involvement ensured the book stands not only as a historical record but as a tribute.

150 Years, 150 Stories now offers families, Old Boys and friends of the College a way to explore Terrace's story in an engaging, deeply personal and authentic way. It is a testament to a community built on connection, character and shared experience - an heirloom created to be read, revisited and treasured for another 150 years and beyond.

House Choir Forget Taylor Swift…in 2025, Terrace staged our very own Eras Tour. Inspired by our sesquicentennial year celebrations, the annual House Choir event took place at Pat Rafter Arena on Friday 18 July. Each House Group was served a decade – or an era – encompassing many of the last 150 years. With chapters of the Terrace story told by the House Deans on screen, this year’s House Choir audience also had the opportunity to discover more about our College’s history amidst the various musical performances.

Kearney House were the first to take the stage, following the yellow brick road through the 1920s and 30s. Treacy rocked out to war anthems inspired by the 1940s, while Magee House staged their own production of Grease to honour the poodle skirts and slicked-back styles of the 50s. With smooth Motown hits, Xavier House took us back to the 1960s complete with a full student band. Buckley House got groovy to celebrate the 1970s, and Mahoney provided endless entertainment with their Karate Kid set from the 80s. Fresh from their time machine, Windsor House made us all nostalgic for the 1990s, while Barrett’s Big Day Out performance was a fitting throwback to the naughties. Rounding out the night were Reidy House, with the sounds of Sing 2 in celebration of our current musical era.

Congratulations to Magee House, who were awarded both the People’s Choice Award and Cup champions – a clean sweep that is sure to go down in House Choir history!

A special thank you to our House Deans, Mr Matt Cocking (Director of Culture), Ms Imogen Brown, the Terrace Cultural team, and the Terrace Performing Arts crew for the hours of hard work and dedication they put into events like House Choir, bringing the musical visions of our Terracians to life.

Terrace Culture: Excellence that Endures Congratulations once again to Terrace Culture for continuing their streak of excellence throughout 2025! It is a time to celebrate the combined efforts of dedicated staff, a supportive College and parent community and some of the most talented and driven students.

Debating

Terrace Debating once again competed in the GPS and QDU circuits, alongside our traditional debate against All Hallows’ School. While 2025 didn’t bring home a GPS premiership, five teams finished in the top three – a testament to the program’s depth. In the QDU competition, more than half of our teams advanced to finals, with the 8.1 team reaching the Grand Final.

Music

The Music team deserves high praise for their vision and delivery of a program that has now been nationally recognised by the Australian Performing Arts Teachers Association for the third straight year. This award considers both the range of offerings and the pedagogy behind the practice, honouring those who bring the arts to life for students and the broader community. A standout moment in 2025 was our performance at the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival, where we celebrated not only a strong showing of Gold Awards, but an exceptional number of individual Achievement of Excellence Awards, acknowledging extraordinary student talent and commitment.

Theatresports

Theatresports champions thrive on quick wit, creative storytelling, strong stage presence and team cohesion.

This year, both our Junior 1 and Senior 1 teams made it to the state finals, with Junior 1 taking the title for a second year in a row. Congratulations to the 2025 Junior 1 Team – James Bolton, Dian Butler, Yannick Cotta, Elias Ford-Murphy, Edward Kerwin and Rocco Veraa.

Chess

2024 saw strong engagement in training, while 2025 delivered strong performances in competition. Our team continues its long-term push to become more competitive in GPS, with our Premier Board placing sixth, our best result in recent memory.

Terrace Chess began the year with an average Queensland Junior rating of 534, increasing to 674 by September.

Theatre | Peter Pan Jr

Our theatre program continued to flourish in 2025 with our annual musical, Peter Pan Jr, featuring students from Years 5 to 8. The show once again sold out quickly, drawing widespread praise for its energy, polish and professionalism. From the first rehearsal to final curtain, students embraced the opportunity to learn from industry professionals. The result? A production that felt every bit as polished as a senior performance. This year also saw continued growth in the Stage Academy, which supports students in developing stage presence and confidence across all forms of performance.

These exceptional outcomes are a testament to the creativity, dedication and hard work of our students and staff. They underscore Terrace’s position as a national leader in arts and cultural education and set a strong foundation for even greater success in the future.

Pilgrims of Hope:

Walking Together into the Jubilee Year

By Miss Lizzy Readford In 2025, the Catholic Church invited us into a Jubilee Year – a sacred time of renewal, reconciliation, and hope.

With the theme Pilgrims of Hope, we are called to journey together in faith, embracing the promise of God’s mercy and the joy of community.

Having just returned from Rome in late September, I experienced firsthand what it means to walk as a pilgrim during this extraordinary year.

What is a Jubilee Year?

The Catholic Jubilee Year is founded in Leviticus 25, which prescribes a 50th year of liberation:

“Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you.”

- Leviticus 25:10 This was a time for debt forgiveness, freeing slaves, and restoring justice among God’s people. The Church later adopted this tradition, establishing ordinary Jubilees every 25 years.

Central to each Jubilee is the opening of the Holy Doors at the major basilicas, particularly St Peter’s in Rome. These doors, sealed between Jubilees, symbolise Christ as the doorway to salvation (John 10:7-9). The theological foundation deepens in Luke 4:18–19, where Jesus proclaims:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me... to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

Christ Himself is the fulfilment of the Jubilee, offering freedom from sin and death.

In September, I was privileged to travel to Rome, standing among countless pilgrims from across the globe. At the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore), I found myself before Pope Francis’s tomb, overwhelmed by a sense of history and continuity. Days later, witnessing Pope Leo XIV celebrate the Pilgrims’ Mass with thousands united in prayer was profoundly moving. In that moment, Pilgrims of Hope became tangible, real, lived.

Returning home, I realised that hope is not passive. St Paul reminds us that “hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts” (Romans 5:5). Hope is active – lived out daily in how we serve, pray, and forgive.

Walking Together as Gentlemen of Terrace

As Gentlemen of Terrace, we embody the pilgrim spirit through our commitment to the Touchstones. Our motto, Servire Deo Sapere, captures the essence of the Jubilee’s call.

When we serve through Eddie’s Van, participate in Immersion programs, or support those on the margins, we are walking as Pilgrims of Hope.

For over 150 years, the Terrace Family has journeyed together, guided by Blessed Edmund Rice. The Holy Doors in Rome may be open, but here at Terrace, we cross our own thresholds each day – thresholds of service, compassion, and brotherhood.

Will you walk through?

The Jubilee Prayer as promulgated by Pope Francis Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven.

May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth.

To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever.

Welcoming the 10th House The Origins of Nagle

By Miss Meghann Collins Not Words, But Deeds Non Verba Sed Facta As a Terrace Family, we are very familiar with the humble beginnings and charism of our founder, Blessed Edmund Rice. In 1802, Edmund opened his first school in Waterford, Ireland and later formed the Christian Brothers congregation.

The spark to this flame, however, came years prior, when he witnessed the work of the Presentation Sisters – a faith community driven to meet the needs of the poor in penal Ireland, amidst an education crisis that saw many children deprived of the right to attend school.

At the helm of this movement was Nano Nagle, a woman renowned for her compassion, courage and service.

Although Nano Nagle and Edmund Rice never crossed paths, they undoubtedly share a faith-filled legacy grounded in the premise that education is a vehicle to liberation. Both took their missions across the world, laying the foundations of Catholic Education and empowering students of all ages.

In 2026, the College is proud to confirm that our newest House Group, the tenth to join our vertical pastoral care system, will be Nagle House. Known as ‘The Lady of the Lamp’, Nano Nagle brought light to the world through her leadership and generosity. Her vision is integral to our own Terrace story, and it is fitting we bring her namesake into our next chapter of College life.

Leading our next House Group into 2026 and beyond is Mr Ben Bell, inaugural Nagle House Dean. As an experienced teacher and middle leader, Ben has been a valued member of the Waterford Place community, nurturing our Gentlemen of Terrace during a critical period of growth and development. Outside of work, Ben is a highly accomplished Volleyball player, not only playing nationally, but also representing Australia on several occasions throughout his sporting career. He has also lent his expertise and on-court skills to the Volleyball program at Terrace, working with our First VI squad as their Head Coach. Notably, these boys secured a joint GPS championship in 2025.

In preparation for the launch of Nagle House next year, Ben shared his excitement to engage with members of the Terrace Family from a new angle as House Dean.

“I am looking forward to not only working with students, but their families, and having the chance to be a pillar within their development throughout their Terrace journey – all the way from Year 5 to Year 12.”

As an educator and a leader, Ben resonates with the pioneering spirit of Nano Nagle and is proud to be a part of the first House Group named after a female at Terrace. He sees the positive power of an underdog narrative that comes with being a newly established House, and remains confident that the Nagle Nobles will rise to the occasion – whether this be in the Inter-House competition, around our College campuses, or when working alongside the Nagle House Friendship Group, the Romero Centre.

“The House Captains are keen to get started, and have already brought so many ideas to the table. Our values of service, compassion and strong participation are at the heart of who we are as a House, and I think these traits will shine through in the years to come.”

Comprised of new and current students, Nagle House will ring in a new era of pastoral care at Terrace.

We look forward to seeing all that these Terracians achieve as members of this inaugural House Group and extend our congratulations to the first ever Nagle House Captains – Samuel Cannon, Carter Densley, Luciano Favari and Thomas O’Loan. May these young men lead with distinction and justice, echoing the spirit of their namesake.

Terrace Advocacy Group

By Ms Angela Wood and TAG Students TAG is fun. TAG is productive. TAG is about fighting for others. For us, the Terrace Advocacy Group has been a place where real things happen, where ideas turn into action and where students of different ages work side by side for something bigger than themselves.

“When you join TAG, you stop saying someone should do something and start realising that someone might be you.”

One of the highlights this year was working with the fantastic Mini TAG boys in Year 6, led by Theo. He felt compelled to advocate for refugees and asylum seekers supported by the Red Cross. In true TAG style, the older boys stepped up, hiking up the hill to Margaret Rice Place to help run the barbeques. Year 6 students navigated price setting dilemmas, delayed food orders and temperamental barbeques, but they kept smiling and stayed quietly determined to advocate for others.

One of them summed it up simply.

“It felt good to know that our sausages were helping people we will probably never meet.”

We began the year as a small group of Year 12 students and ended with around 20 boys from across the College. It did not take long for the team to get their hands dirty, literally and figuratively.

Before we knew it, we were cooking sausages on not just one, not two, but three campuses. There were early mornings, long tongs, smoke in our eyes and plenty of laughs as we worked out how many sausages it actually takes to feed a hungry Terrace crowd.

TAG is about giving voice to the voiceless. It is about listening for what matters to students here at Terrace and trying to shape real solutions. Some of these are small, like changing the way we sort our rubbish and recycle on campus. Some are bigger, like starting conversations about access, disability and inclusion. Whatever the size of the issue, we try not to walk away from it. As one boy said,

TAG also helped lead R U OK? Day activities, encouraging real conversations between mates and reminding boys that checking in on each other is everyone’s responsibility. Behind the scenes there were planning meetings, poster runs, announcements and many small details that helped create space for boys to talk, listen and show care.

Another powerful moment in our year was a day of wheelchair basketball. TAG initiated the activity to advocate for and bring awareness to people living with disability. Trying to move, pass and shoot from a chair was a challenge many of us did not expect. As one student reflected,

“You do not really understand what access means until you try to play a full game from a wheelchair.”

Experiences like this have made us more determined to help Terrace grow as a community of welcome and access for people of all abilities.

TAG will continue to welcome boys with ideas and energy. Some of the projects we are working on now might not be finished by the time current members graduate, but that has not stopped the team from trying. That is the spirit of TAG. We show up, we listen, we act and we keep going.

For those who are thinking about it, TAG is a place for anyone who wants to turn concern into action. It is a space where you can have fun, work hard and make a real difference, one sausage, one meeting and one idea at a time.

R U OK? Day

By Ms Angela Wood R U OK? Day is always a bright spot on the Terrace calendar, but this year felt especially significant as our community stretched across the main campus, Waterford Place and Margaret Rice Place. At its heart, the day is a simple invitation to look someone in the eye and ask a small but powerful question –

“Are you OK?” Throughout the morning, Pastoral Care groups took time during PC to talk about how to start a real conversation with a mate who might be struggling. Boys reflected on what it means to notice changes in the people around them and how to listen without trying to “fix” everything.

One student summed it up well:

“It reminded me that you do not have to have all the answers, you just have to show up and care.”

Across the College, yellow posters, wristbands and messages on screens were a visible reminder that checking in on each other is part of what it means to be Gentlemen of Terrace.

At Margaret Rice Place, boys took extra pride in making their space feel welcoming, decorating common areas and leading activities that encouraged everyone to get involved. There were shared laughs, shared sausages and of course high-level competition on the handball court. Small gestures like sharing a joke, inviting someone into a game, or sending a message to a friend became simple ways of living out the spirit of the day.

R U OK? Day matters at Terrace because it lines up so strongly with who we are trying to be as a community. We speak often about an inclusive community and Gospel

spirituality, about walking alongside one another. Days like this remind us that mental health is not an individual problem to be solved in isolation, but something we hold together as a College. As one Year 11 boy said,

“It made me think about the quiet boys I sit near every day and how important it is to actually ask how they are going.”

Our hope is that R U OK? Day is not just a once-a-year event, but a practice that becomes part of everyday life here. A simple question, asked with genuine care, can create space for courage, honesty and hope. That is the kind of culture we want to keep building at Terrace.

Red and Black in Action As our 150th year draws to a close, we celebrate the achievements, milestones and everyday moments that have made 2025 so memorable for our Terracians.

QCMF Success | Terrace Music in Perfect Harmony

The Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival is always a highlight on the Terrace Cultural calendar, with 33 ensembles and more than 700 students taking part across four inspiring days of music making. Congratulations to the Terrace Music program, who came home with a grand total of 19 Gold Awards, 13 Silver Awards and 1 Bronze Award. These outstanding results were accompanied by 12 individual Awards of Excellence that were awarded to students across a variety of different areas.

National Science Week

National Science Week is an annual celebration of science and technology, held each August. In 2025, National Science Week encouraged students and educators to uncover the mysteries of the Universe by examining the fundamental languages of nature, such as mathematics and quantum science. At Terrace, members of the Science Faculty showcased their experimental skills, with engaging outdoor science demonstrations on main campus and at Carrick. Students also participated in a daily Pastoral Care class quiz, culminating in a pizza party for the class with the highest score.

Old Boy Pride | NRL Champion Returns to Tennyson During the GPS Rugby season, the College welcomed Terrace Old Boy, Patty Carrigan (GT 2015) back to Tennyson Playing Fields. The boys were thrilled to meet and chat to Patty at his old stomping grounds, where he raised the premiership trophy just a decade ago. It was great to see history repeat itself, as Patty captained the Broncos to an NRL championship only a few weeks after his visit!

DECEMBER 2025 Terrace Gives Back | Christmas Appeals

Each year, House Groups and various year levels participate in a range of Christmas Appeal projects. In 2025, these initiatives have again been wellsupported by students and their families.

With collection points across our College campuses, Terracians of all ages have provided much-needed supplies and donations to their House Friendship Groups and other organisations ahead of the festive season. Under the guidance of the Identity Office, Christmas Appeals provide the Terrace Family an opportunity to give back to those who need it most.

Theatresports Grand Finals | Back-to-Back Junior Champions

On Sunday 12 October, the Terrace Senior 1 and Junior 1 Theatresports teams took to the stage for the 2025 Queensland Youth Theatresports Grand Finals. This prestigious event brought together the top 13 school teams from across the region in a fast-paced showcase of improvisational skill, theatrical flair, and quick wit. Congratulations to all students and coaches involved, with a special shoutout to the Junior 1 team, who were crowned champions for the second year in a row.

Critical and Creative | Future Problem Solvers on the National Stage

In October of this year, Terrace’s top performing Future Problem Solvers’ teams were invited to compete at the FPS Nationals in Sydney. The boys performed exceptionally well, with the Middle Division team placing third in the Action Plan Skit. Magic entrants also had success, with Alfie Newton (Year 11) placing second and Aiden Kim (Year 8) finishing third in their Team Booklet competitions.

Inter-House Track and Field Carnival Friday 10 October saw students participate in the final Inter-House competition for 2025 – the Inter-House Track and Field Carnival. Throughout the day, Terracians competed in classic events such as sprints, relays, high jump and javelin, while also having the opportunity to play for House points with fun carnival games including tug-of-war and sack races.

Congratulations to the Windsor Warriors for securing the title of 2025 Track and Field Champions. Windsor were also later crowned House Champions, after a dominant year of effort and involvement – well done, gentlemen!

Terrace Participation & Sport

By Mr Shaun McLean At Terrace, sport is an essential part of the holistic educational experience, shaping character, strengthening community, and providing every student with the opportunity to grow. The Terrace Participation Model remains at the forefront of our sporting philosophy, ensuring that all students have the chance to represent the College with pride. In 2025, more than 1,300 students were engaged in Terrace Sport, competing across 296 teams in our 10 GPS sports. This extraordinary level of involvement reflects a school where participation is not simply encouraged – it is embedded in our culture. Supporting this vast program is a dedicated coaching community of 398 staff and volunteers, with more than half being Old Boys, each bringing expertise, passion and a strong connection to the values of the Red and Black.

Across multiple sports, students access targeted speed and agility development, strength and conditioning support, technical coaching, and personalised training plans delivered by qualified staff. Regular physical testing and performance analysis allow both students and coaches to track progress, identify strengths, and tailor interventions to individual needs. This ensures that development is intentional, evidence-based, safe and aligned with contemporary best practice.

Terrace’s performance framework is strengthened by intentional alignment with state and national sporting bodies.

Through these connections, the College cultivates clear pathways and strategic partnerships that support students aspiring to higher representation. These relationships provide access to specialist expertise, contemporary standards, and development opportunities that extend beyond the school environment, ensuring Terracians can transition confidently into representative programs and broader sporting pathways.

The College’s integrated medical and return-to-play processes further reinforce our focus on both wellbeing and performance. Coaches, performance staff, physiotherapists and our medical partners collaborate closely to ensure injuries are appropriately managed and that students return to training and competition safely and confidently. This model provides a seamless support network around each student, reinforcing our commitment to care as well as performance.

Alongside this deeply rooted commitment to participation, Terrace has embraced a renewed and deliberate focus on performance. Our evolving Athlete Development program provides a structured, long-term approach to growth for students who wish to take their sporting journey further.

Terrace’s Sport Excellence programs build on this foundation, offering committed student-athletes access to high quality coaching, specialised development pathways, and competitive environments that challenge ambition and reward effort. These programs align with the College’s strategic sporting vision—developing athletes who demonstrate skill, resilience, humility, and a deep understanding of what it means to represent Terrace on and off the field.

Together, the participation and performance frameworks reinforce our belief that sport at Terrace is not simply about games or results, but about creating opportunities for every Terracian to strive, improve and flourish. As we look ahead, Terrace Sport remains dedicated to nurturing participation, elevating performance, and upholding the proud traditions and spirit of the Red and Black.

The 150 Year Collection Terrace Artworks

By Dr Michael Carroll 2025 has been a significant year for the College, as we celebrated 150 years of providing a quality Catholic Education in the Edmund Rice tradition. Throughout the year, we have enjoyed many community events and celebrations that will stand as lasting legacies of this historic year for Terrace.

As College Principal, I am proud that legacy items such as Margaret Rice Place, the Memorial Wall and the GT150 Heritage Walk have been completed during this year, and will remain as permanent reminders of our 150-year celebrations for generations to come.

Another special legacy initiative for this year has been the commissioning of a number of artworks, designed to capture the significant buildings on our College campuses. In this series of pieces five works have been commissioned, two of which have been completed in 2025, with the remaining three to join the College archives next year.

The first of the completed commissions depict our original buildings – the Treacy Centre and College Hall. On behalf of the College, I am pleased to confirm that the Tennyson Rowing Shed, Margaret Rice Place and Waterford Place will complete the set later in 2026.

These artworks have a special connection to Terrace, as the artist herself is a current parent at the College.

Simone Desmarchelier, mother of Luca (Year 8), is a recognised local artist whose mastery of light and colour is matched by her ability to evoke mood and emotional resonance in each subject. Her ink and watercolour pieces explore architecture, interiors, still life, landscapes and botanical scenes – often highlighting the historical and personal significance of community landmarks such as our College. Simone was particularly drawn to the textures of the sandstone and rich history of Terrace’s first buildings ensuring that her paintings of these landmark structures evoke both a sense of history and optimism for the future.

Simone has generously donated the Treacy Centre painting to the College, in honour of our sesquicentennial year. Once each piece is completed, it will be proudly displayed in the building it depicts. Limited edition prints will also be created of each painting, to be made available for purchase via the College website.

Currently, the Treacy Building and College Hall paintings are proudly displayed in each building along with a commemorative plaque detailing the artwork. Once all five pieces are complete, the ‘150 Year Collection’ will serve as a lasting visual tribute to the legacy of our 150 years, honouring both the Terrace Family and the broader educational community.

Artistry in Action

By Ms Fiona Altoft On Thursday 16 October, the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art were announced. These awards recognise and promote outstanding achievement in Senior Visual Art education across Queensland’s state and non-state schools. It is the highest accolade a Year 12 Visual Art student can achieve in their schooling journey.

This year, Terrace had its most successful result to date. Out of the three students we submitted for the Metropolitan Regional Exhibition, we received: ¥ Highly Commended Awards | Congratulations to Dan Little and Nicholas Spicer for this outstanding achievement. ¥ State Finalist | Most impressively, Denver Loli was announced as one of only 40 state finalists, whose work will be exhibited at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) next year from March to September, as part of the state-wide Creative Generation exhibition.

Well done to these wonderful Gentlemen of Terrace! We look forward to seeing all you create in your future endeavours.

Socktober

By Mrs Monica Keating As a part of the College’s commitment to the EREA Touchstone of Justice and Solidarity, boys in Year 7 participated in Socktober throughout Term 4.

This Catholic Mission initiative aims to connect young people with the challenges of living in the developing world through the world game of soccer.

In the developing world, many children who love soccer cannot afford a proper ball, and so create their own from whatever materials are available. To raise awareness of the crippling poverty many children face, the Socktober project encourages young people to create their own soccer ball from recycled materials and engage in a fun soccer match, while raising funds for Catholic Mission.

In 2025, Catholic Mission are concentrating their efforts in Zambia.

Located in southern Africa, Zambia, is a landlocked country of rugged terrain and diverse wildlife, with many beautiful parks and safari areas. Despite its natural wealth and strong spirit, many families in this country face daily challenges, especially in rural farming areas. Today, one of the most urgent issues is the severe hunger crisis that threatens the

wellbeing of millions. At Terrace, our fundraising efforts this year are focused on small rural communities in Zambia.

On Thursday 30 October, students in Year 7 put their homemade soccer balls – comprised of old socks, t-shirts, fabric bags, plastic, ties and bubble wrap – to the ultimate test, with a friendly soccer shootout. All boys had a fantastic time playing a sport they love, while raising awareness for this important cause.

By supporting Socktober, Terrace students and their families can ensure that communities in Zambia have access to regular, nutritious food, create opportunities for sustainable farming, and help parents to earn a stable income from the land. Most importantly, your support will give their children the chance to stay in school, grow up healthy, and build a brighter future for their country.

His Music Lives in You

By Miss Meghann Collins Brother Patrick Ambrose Treacy was a renowned Catholic educationalist and religious leader within the Christian Brothers congregation. First arriving in Melbourne in 1868, Br Treacy was tasked with the challenge of founding schools in local dioceses. Many financial and reputational setbacks ensued, with little to no resources afforded to the Brothers and their mission. The sheer determination and grit showcased by Br Treacy and his companions through these truly dire periods, however, cannot be denied.

Putting his faith in God and guided by the phrase ‘faith over fear’, Ambrose devoted his efforts to capital fundraising and financial negotiations, travelling on horseback to meet with communities across the nation. These expeditions became the stuff of legend, laying the foundations for the many schools that would follow – including our very own St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace.

During his travels, Ambrose developed a reputation as a musician.

Everywhere he went, his violin went with him, and he was known to provide festive entertainment while on the road. Ambrose’s ability to bring joy and light to even the darkest of times is a testament to his faith and steadfast commitment to the traditions and charism of Blessed Edmund Rice. We, as the Terrace Family, continue to admire Br Treacy’s tenacity and vocation, and remain eternally grateful for the sacrifices he and those first Christian Brothers made in founding our College.

At the end of Term 2, all members of Terrace staff were invited to attend a Staff Spirituality Day in celebration of our College’s 150th year. As part of this special occasion, soon-to-be College Principal, Mr Damien Fall, led a presentation detailing the life and journey of Br Ambrose Treacy. This poignant session offered a unique historical insight into the early days of Terrace, and left a resounding impression with one simple statement:

His music lives in you.

Ambrose’s talent, joy and faith – the gifts that made him unique – are the things he actively chose to share every day. At Terrace, our staff embody this same spirit.

From decade to decade, year to year, our teachers, administrative staff, coaches, tutors and mentors give so much of their time, energy, effort and care in support of the Gentlemen of Terrace. Individually, their music is distinct. The lessons taught and memories made will stick with many Terracians for a lifetime. But together, that same music is a layered and complex symphony – a foundation of high-quality, Catholic teaching and

learning that will play on far beyond our sesquicentennial celebrations, and for the next 150 years to follow.

The session concluded with a beautiful and moving violin solo performed by Mrs Domenica Kelly, which set the tone for a memorable day ahead. Our Terrace staff cohort came together in faith and in friendship, with a specially curated Terrace 150 Mass presided by the Very Reverend Father Anthony Mellor, Dean of the Cathedral of St Stephen, followed by a highly enjoyable reunion. The evening brought together different eras of staff under the lights of Duhig Place, just shy of the foundation stone that was first laid in 1875. It is fitting that we celebrated this event on main campus, because no matter how far and wide our College expands geographically, every generation of the Terrace Family is connected by this place.

In rounding out our 150th year in education, we extend thanks and appreciation to all of the staff who have brought and continue to bring our Terrace story to life.

May the legacy composed by the Christian Brothers and particularly, Br Ambrose Treacy, continue to inspire a melody of compassion and care.

GT on the Green

By Mr Jack Lorimer Bubbles filled the sky and music filled the air as our Terrace Family came together for one of the most anticipated community events of the year - the annual GT on the Green long lunch. This year’s celebration once again transformed Tennyson Playing Fields into a lively scene of laughter, music, and connection, reminding us just how special it is to be part of the Terrace community.

The afternoon began with a glass of bubbles and the familiar buzz of conversation as old friends reunited, and new connections were made.

With the addition of an espresso martini van from The Power Station Co. and freshly made Greek Feasts from our friends at Yasou Yiros on offer, there was no shortage of energy.

Although storms were on the horizon, a brief downpour midway through the afternoon did little to dampen spirits; in fact, it only added to the magic. Umbrellas appeared, shoes were kicked off, and laughter echoed across the grounds as the music continued. It was a fitting reminder that a little rain cannot stop a great Terrace celebration – if anything, it made the day even more memorable.

This year’s entertainment line-up was a highlight, with The Baker Boys setting the perfect tone as the sun set over the fields. The dance floor was alive well into the evening, filled with members of the Terrace Family enjoying the kind of joy that defines our community.

Events like GT on the Green simply wouldn’t be possible without the incredible generosity of our sponsors.

Terrace 150 TLG Celebration In conjunction with the College’s sesquicentennial celebrations, we also recognise 125 years of the Terrace Ladies Group, so fondly known to our community as the TLG. On Sunday 14 September, past, present and future mothers and caregivers came together for an afternoon of connection, raising a glass to the memorable moments experienced during their time at the College. It was lovely to see many friends reunited and new bonds formed, reminding us of the strength and heart the women of Terrace have shown for generations.

– Proverbs 20:7 The Gentlemen of Terrace are incredibly blessed to have a number of fantastic male role models in their lives. From their teachers to their coaches, tutors and fellow Terracians, there are many men who make a day-to-day impact both within and beyond the classroom.

For a majority of students, however, some of the most significant male figures of influence are found at home, in the fathers, grandfathers, family members and male caregivers who provide immeasurable care and love.

To the fathers within our Terrace Family …

You are kind

Fatherhood is a vocation, open to all who nurture and uplift others.

Through their words, thoughts and actions, Terrace fathers and father figures set the standard for what it means to be a gentleman.

You are strong

Dads lift us up when we are down. At Terrace, they showcase their strength and vulnerability both emotionally and physically, by being there for their sons and showing up when it matters.

You are wise

Equipped with steady encouragement and helpful advice, Terrace dads continue to shape Terracians into confident and compassionate young men, ready to take on the world.

You are humble

Every Terracian has a story to tell, but it is not one they write alone. For some of our students, their first steps into life at Terrace can be traced back to a robust lineage of siblings, fathers, uncles and grandfathers who once wore the Red and Black with pride. Few connections can compare to these generational ties, which stand as a proud testament to the strength of the Terrace Family.

Today and always, we celebrate the dads of Terrace in every form, role, and expression of fatherhood.

Thank you for all that you do.

Many tasks for a Terrace dad are thankless – from early morning drop offs, to cheering from the sidelines at Saturday sport or in the audience during performance season, and the countless late nights studying at the kitchen table. Nonetheless, these jobs are taken in stride and without question.

There is something truly special about the dads of Terrace, and the support they provide their sons is often done quietly and without recognition. In the likeness of our patron St Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father, they lead with humility and gentleness. Throughout Semester 2, Terracians have had the opportunity to celebrate the male caregivers in their lives, bringing these traits and values, which are so well akin to the Gentlemen of Terrace framework, to the fore.

You are loved

Undoubtedly, the bond shared between a father and son is incredibly meaningful.

Within our College community, we take great pride in seeing these relationships evolve and flourish throughout each stage of the Terrace journey.

From The Gregory Terrace Foundation Chair Honouring 150 Years.

Investing in Tomorrow.

At the close of our historic 150th year of St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, it has been a privilege to walk alongside our community as we continue the mission inspired by Blessed Edmund Rice, transforming lives through education and opportunity.

This year saw the official opening of Margaret Rice Place, a state-of-theart Years 5 and 6 precinct that now welcomes the youngest members of our Terrace Family. More than a building, it represents the beginning of a young man’s Terrace journey, one grounded in connection, curiosity, and belonging. It stands as a testament to what is possible when our community unites behind a bold vision.

We also celebrated another successful Giving Day, where our Terrace Family once again stepped forward with generosity and belief in the power of a Terrace education. Together, our community raised more than $400,000 in 24 hours, supported by the energy and enthusiasm of over 50 Foundation Student Ambassadors who spoke with donors, shared their gratitude, and brought the Terrace spirit to life. Their involvement was a powerful reminder that philanthropy at Terrace is not only about dollars raised, but about our young men learning the value of giving back.

None of this would be possible without the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes. We are deeply grateful for the ongoing work and support of our Foundation Board, whose stewardship and guidance continue to strengthen our mission. I also wish to acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of our College Development Office, whose work plays a vital role in building relationships and bringing the Foundation’s vision to life. Their efforts reflect the best of Terrace, service, generosity and a shared belief in what a Terrace education makes possible.

On a personal note, my connection to Terrace feels as though it has come full circle. As we farewell Dr Carroll this year in his retirement, it is important to recognise the significance of his service and the lasting legacy he leaves here at Terrace.

I know he would prefer I didn’t say this, but as a young man, I was lucky enough to be taught by Dr Carroll, along with many other dedicated teachers, and even a few of our esteemed Christian Brothers. Their guidance helped shape the character and values that have stayed with me throughout my life.

Years later, returning as an Old Boy and a parent, I felt a deep sense of gratitude and desire to give back to the College that had given me so much. Having the opportunity to reconnect with Dr Carroll and some other familiar faces in the teaching faculty, to share the odd cup of tea with Br Walker, Br White and Br Buckley AM and to work alongside those who helped shape me as a young man has been one of the great privileges of my time involved with the Foundation.

Over the past decade, observing firsthand Dr Carroll’s continued passion to influence and inspire today’s young men, just as he did for my generation, has reinforced how much his leadership has meant to the Terrace Family. His impact reaches far beyond classrooms, guiding young men, supporting families, and contributing to education more broadly in Brisbane, Queensland, and across Australia. It is important that we recognise and thank him for his leadership and his remarkable legacy, and we wish him every success and fulfilment in the next chapter of his journey.

And while this year has been such an important historical year for the College, next year the Foundation celebrates a milestone of its own – forty years since its establishment. Four decades of generosity, stewardship, and shared belief in the Terrace mission. Forty years of families giving so that others may benefit.

The legacy of Terrace has always been built through community. Every bursary recipient, every classroom, every opportunity is a reflection of that generosity and a reminder that we are custodians of something truly special.

From the GTOBA President As another year draws to a close, it is the perfect moment to reflect on the many GTOBA experiences we have shared. A quick scroll through our social media captures the spirit perfectly – Terrace Old Boys contributing to their communities, leading in their fields, and continuing to make a positive mark on the world.

The Association has celebrated another successful year of events and milestones, each providing an opportunity to reconnect and showcase the strength, camaraderie, and enduring spirit of Terracians.

Our peak season, as always, came in August with reunions – an extraordinary period of connection and storytelling.

More than 500 Old Boys gathered across seven milestone reunions, including the remarkable 70 Year Reunion of the Class of 1955 and the 60 Year Reunion of the men from 1965.

November’s Vintage Terracians’ Morning Tea was another highlight – an uplifting occasion that brought together some of our most senior Old Boys in College Hall. It is always inspiring to see men like Des Morris (1946), Noel Sparksman (1947), and Adrian Petrie (1949) returning year after year to celebrate enduring friendships forged over decades.

Among the most anticipated events on our calendar remains the Br Barry Buckley AM Breakfast. With the generous support of our Event Partner, Helios Advisory Group, and table sponsors Yabbr, Morgans, and Stoddarts Group, the marquee at Victoria Park again hosted a vibrant Terrace gathering.

It was a privilege to see Br Buckley – one of our greatest Old Boys – sharp and engaging as ever. This year’s guest speakers, The Hon. Tim Mander MP, Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for the Olympics and Paralympic Games, and Stephen Conry AM (GT 1981), Chair of the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority, shared valuable insights into Brisbane’s Olympic journey and the infrastructure legacy it will leave for Queensland.

For the fourth consecutive year, the College graciously provided Celebration of Excellence as the platform for

announcing our Outstanding Alumni Awards, honouring Gentlemen of Terrace whose achievements exemplify service, leadership, and community spirit. We are delighted to announce the 2025 Outstanding Young Alumnus, Harry Wilson (GT 2017), and the 2025 Outstanding Alumnus, Hugh Lunn (GT 1959). We warmly congratulate both Harry and Hugh on their achievements and their recognition as our 2025 Outstanding Alumni.

A warm welcome also to our newest Old Boys – the Class of 2025. You have completed a fine year as Seniors, not only academically but through your service and leadership within the College. We look forward to welcoming you formally at the President’s Drinks in February and encourage you to stay connected.

This year also marks a particularly meaningful recognition within our community. At the Celebration of Excellence Evening, the GTOBA awarded Dr Michael Carroll the title of Honorary Old Boy, acknowledging his extraordinary service and leadership.

Since beginning at Terrace as a young teacher in 1983, Dr Carroll has dedicated more than 44 years to Catholic education and has profoundly influenced generations of Terracians.

Fittingly, this honour now links him officially with his father Leo Carroll (GT 1956) and with the heritage of the College he has served so faithfully.

As we conclude the year, I wish to extend sincere thanks to the Development Office team – Doreen, Erin, Rachel, Joel and Anita – for their dedication, and to the GTOBA Executive Committee for their ongoing efforts to sustain our shared identity and momentum.

Together, we ensure that what has been great about our past continues to define our future, keeping Old Boys connected to each other and to Terrace.

Old Boys’ Basketball Round Old Boys returned courtside to cheer on Terrace in a thrilling clash against The Southport School. While the scoreboard didn’t fall our way, the afternoon was a win for connection, with plenty of laughs and stories shared at the post-match function on the Mt Sion Rooftop.

One of our most cherished traditions, the Vintage Terracians’ Morning Tea, brought over 120 Old Boys back to College Hall to reconnect and celebrate their lifelong bond with Terrace. Continuing another treasured tradition, several grandsons joined their grandparents, showcasing the enduring spirit that spans generations. Outstanding

Alumnus Award Mr Hugh Lunn (GT 1959)

For more than five decades, Hugh Lunn has helped Australians understand themselves through stories that are honest, humorous, and deeply human.

Hugh’s gift for storytelling emerged early. After leaving Terrace in 1959, he took his first steps into journalism at The Courier-Mail before joining Reuters, where his career quickly accelerated.

His assignments took him far beyond Brisbane: first to Papua New Guinea and then to Vietnam, where he reported on the war as Reuters’ correspondent. His coverage earned widespread respect for its clarity, compassion, and courage.

On returning to Australia, Hugh became a senior journalist at The Australian.

Between 1974 and 1979, he won three Walkley Awards – Australia’s

highest honour in journalism – for stories that combined meticulous reporting with unmistakable heart.

But it was his memoir, Over the Top with Jim (1991), that made Hugh a household name. A warm and witty recollection of growing up in suburban Brisbane, the book resonated deeply with Australians and became the nation’s best-selling non-fiction book that year. It went on to become one of the highest-selling Australian childhood memoirs of all time, cementing Hugh’s status as one of Australia’s most beloved storytellers.

Hugh’s contributions have continued to be celebrated over the years. He has received the Advance Australia Award (1994), was named a Queensland Icon (2009), elected a Fellow of the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences (2015), and inducted into the Australian Media Hall of Fame (2018).

His body of work – books, journalism, and essays – captures not only a life well lived, but an Australia in transition.

Despite his accolades, Hugh has always remained grounded, crediting his family, his Terrace upbringing, and the Brisbane community that shaped his earliest stories.

A writer who helped define the Australian voice, Hugh is a truly deserving recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Outstanding Young Alumnus Award Mr Harry Wilson (GT 2017)

From the playing fields of Tennyson to stadiums around the world, Harry Wilson’s rise in Australian Rugby has been marked by grit, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the team around him.

Harry’s rugby journey began in earnest at Terrace, where his natural athleticism, determination, and leadership quickly stood out. After graduating in 2017, he progressed through Queensland Rugby’s development pathways, representing Australia at the U20 World Championships and earning a reputation as one of the most promising forwards of his generation.

In 2020, Harry made his Wallabies debut – an achievement many only dream of – before going on to solidify his place as a cornerstone of the national squad. His consistent performances for the Queensland Reds, characterised by his high work rate, physicality, and sharp footwork, have earned him acclaim from coaches, teammates, and fans alike.

In 2024, Harry was named captain of the Wallabies, leading the national team in Test matches, including a memorable series in Argentina. This leadership role extended into 2025, when he captained Australia through the British & Irish Lions tour. Yet those who know him best will tell you that Harry remains the same grounded Terracian he has always been – grateful for the opportunities he has earned and deeply committed to giving back to the game that shaped him.

For his achievements in national and international rugby – and for the example he continues to set for students and Old Boys – Harry is recognised as the 2025 Outstanding Young Alumnus.
