College Principal’s Page Welcome to this new colour edition of the Terracian. At this time of the year many of our young men are involved in the process of completing exams and tests in preparation for this next round of reporting. It is also during this time our Year Ten students are eagerly participating in an exciting curriculum project called the Immersion Program. This program is run across a block of three weeks where students specialise in a particular field of study that is across curriculum areas and utilises both the expertise of staff and the extended community. This year students have been offered a selection of nine units as outlined below. It is clear from the feedback from students that this program has definitely created an excitement in learning in the resourceful way these programs are designed and presented to the learner. At the conclusion of each unit there is an opportunity and gathering for families to share in the learnings of the young men involved.

As a continuation of our Curriculum Enhancement here at Terrace the Waterford Place project is near to becoming reality over the next few months. Our architect Mr Tony Macksey from Macksey Rush is nearing the end of documentation in preparation for the tender process. At this stage we are hoping to begin work on the site in early November following a launch on the evening of 1 November at the College. At the launch we intend to present to the community an understanding of the opportunities the project will offer our students for its first intake in 2007.

Brother Henry, FMS

As far as school Rugby is concerned, probably the most famous coach over the last century has been Brother Henry Gaffney, FMS. [Photo at left] He was coach of St Joseph’s Marist Brothers’ College, Hunters Hill, between 1922 and 1954. He trained the First XV and Second XV during these years in the Sydney GPS and he won an astounding twenty-one First XV Premierships and twenty Second XV Premierships! Frank Gaffney had been born in Wales in 1877 as the seventh child of an Irish family, but his father died when he was two and after a few years of struggle his mother brought her eight children to Australia in 1884 and settled in Brisbane. There were five Gaffney boys at Terrace in the 1880s, including Frank in 1889 when he was twelve. After their time at school Frank and his older brother Tom (GT 1884) started the Gregory Terrace Junior Fooball Club which won the Brisbane Junior Premiership in 1896-1898. They later joined the First Grade Boomerang Club which under the electoral system of the time became the North Brisbane Club where he played with the likes of Eddie Dore - the first International from Terrace. But Frank Gaffney had a change of mind and went to Sydney where he was received as a Marist Brother in 1906 - at age 29.

Br Henry had a brief stint at St Joseph’s in 1910-1914, but usual transfers followed until at the end of 1919 he was asked to return to St Joseph’s. From then until he died at 93 on Christmas Day, 1970, he remained, spending fifty-seven of his sixty-four years as a Marist Brother at St Joseph’s, Hunters Hill. He and his brother Patrick (GT 1885) also a Marist Brother revisited Gregory Terrace in May, 1939. The Terrace Quarterly of June 1939 referred to the visit: The school was honoured by the visit of two great Old Boys, Brother Columba and Brother Henry. Brother Columba has spent forty years on the missions in New Caledonia and Brother Henry is the very well known football coach at St Joseph’s College, Hunter’s Hill, Sydney. He has been responsible for turning out many men who have become famous in the football world. Some 66 years after that visit, the current Terrace Quarterly expresses thanks to Mr Bill Rawle who played under Brother Henry in the 1939-1940 Hunters Hill Champion Teams as a breakaway. He writes, “Recently I realised that no one had ever put together details of his methods so I interviewed some of his top players and this book is the result. Would you accept this in his memory for your archives.” He has named his book The Tactics of Legendary SJC RugbyCoach (1922-1954) Brother Henry Gaffney. Fr Jack Rosenskjar One of the eleven Old Boy priests concelebrating at the 130-year Mass at the Cathedral was Father John Rosenskjar. It was especially good to see him because he is such a link with the past of Gregory Terrace. He was a schoolboy from 1929-1933. Then he decided upon the priesthood and was ordained in 1940 Like so many Terracians of the period he went to war - but as an Austalian military chaplain. The photo below shows him as a Chaplain saying Mass for Australian soldiers (mainly from Toowoomba) in Milne Bay in 1942. When the Old Boys was re-started as the GTOBA in 1948 - it had previously been the Christian Brothers Old Boys Association - he joined with some other famous names. The President was Tom Sweeney, the Vice-President was Dinny O’Flynn, Secretary was Norbert Byrne, Treasurer was Bruce Afleck and members of the Committee were Fr Jack Rosenskjar, Professor James Mahoney, Fred Schubert and Judge Viv Milne. (Father Rosenskjar, Norbert Byrne and Fred Schubert are happily still with us.)

Fr Jim Bishop, SM Fr Bishop [Photo right] has been saying the Tuesday morning school Mass for longer than any of the students can remember! He has also said Mass for the Terrace Ladies’ Group and for Senior Graduation Evenings when requested. So his photo in a July “Courier-Mail” and later in the “Catholic Leader” would have been recognised. What might have surprised the students (and some staff?) was the fact that he served in the Australian Navy in WW2 as a twenty-year-old naval signalman. Since his ship, HMAS Manoora, was bombed by a lone Japanese bomber at Balikpapan the day before the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, it must have been one of the last Australian targets in the war. After the war he worked for a time in the Commonwealth Bank while deciding his future. He opted to spend his life as a Marist priest and we at Terrace share in this blessing. We wish him well.

Deceased Terracians Paul Pollard (GT 1941-1945) died recently after returning to Canberra from an overseas trip. His sister is a Mercy nun at the Mater and she informed his old friend, John Maguire, who wrote: I first met Paul in Grade 5 at Terrace in my first year there in 1941. We were great mates. Paul had been a child star in his native New Zealand before coming to Brisbane - playing the xylophone standing on a box because of his size. Each Speech Night in the City Hall he would play his xylophone and some of the old boys might remember it. He did Junior at Terrace and then went on to do Senior at Nudgee. He had a successful accounting business in Canberra where he lived for many years. He appeared in a 1942 photo of the GPS Athletics that year wearing his “CBC” red and black Terrace blazer. [Reproduced at left] Paul McManus (GT Senior 1958) died in August. He was the brother of Dr Brendan McManus (College Principal, 1993-2003) and (predeceased) Dermot McManus (Senior 1961) PAUL POLLARD IN HIS BLAZER, 1942 Paul with John Maguire at his right.

Noel Galvin (Senior 1946) died in August. His sons and grandson attended Terrace. Leon Wruck (Senior 1947) who died in August and whose son and grandson also attended Terrace..

They Stood at the Door and Waited....... Before the Entrance Procession of the Mass of Thanksgiving for the 130 years of St Joseph’s College, there was a Symbolic Re-enactment of the Opening Day - July 5, 1875. A stream of 130 students representing the 130 years of history came through the “door” of Edmund Rice Education at Pugin’s Chapel at St Stephen’s. A Reader read some of the names that were put up in the Cathedral of some past students and gave a brief outline of who they were. One of the students was John Pole, the first name on the College Register, a seven year old from Wickham Street. The Brothers’ House opened in 1876 and some of the older boys started their education in the ground floor rooms after September 1876. By 1878 there were 100 boys at St Stephen’s and 70 at Terrace. The Canali Building of one storey in what we now call College Hall was opened in 1880, with the final 105 boys marching up to Gregory Terrace from St Stephen’s. One of the boys who was in this march was Joseph Bradshaw who started in 1877 and moved to the Canali Building in 1880. Patrick Meaney came to Terrace in 1911 and left in 1914 as the world entered one of its darkest eras. Pat treasured his Terrace photos and on his death his daughter found the photo of his class in 1913. On it he recorded the names of the boys who journeyed with him and whose names he could remember. Miss Patricia Meaney brought the photo to the Archives in 2000. [See top right] Cyril Wilkinson began his lifelong association with Terrace when he studied

to Senior 1930-1936. His path led him to the Army during World War 2, then to medicine, to training Charles “Chilla” Porter, a bronze medallist high-jumper in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and to a term as President of the GTOBA, an association he has continued to this day. Tony and Terry Jackman were at Terrace from 1952-1955 and from 1955-56. Tony was Dux of his Senior year and won an Open Scholarship to Queensland University. His classmates recall Tony walking round the schoolyard with a book in either hand reading both at the same time. Today he is an internationally ranked Bridge player whose column appears in the Courier-Mail each week. Sometimes the journey has encompassed generations of families. One of the first Terrace students was Herbert Nock who attended in those early days of the 1880s. His nephew, John Dolan, attended Terrace at the turn of the twentieth century. John’s grandson, Roy Young, was a Terracian during the time of Cyril Wilkinson. In keeping with the family tradition, Roy’s sons Bill and Tim came to

Terrace in the seventies. Bill was awarded a research fellowship at MIT (USA) to work on his doctorate in oceanography and oceanographic engineering. Tim Young’s journey brought him back to Terrace as a teaching staff member and Dean of Studies. Both of Tim’s sons, Luke and Nick, have travelled with the Terrace community and have taken their journey further to tertiary studies. Isaac Pincus began his Terrace journey on January 24, 2005, in Year 5. His cousins Daniel and Nicholas are in the midst of their time at Terrace. The boys’ fathers Simon and Steven were both Terracians - as was their father, Dr David. [Photo opposite] The journey is not only made up of those who have travelled the road with us in the past and the present. In order to enrich our story, the Terrace community is continually including new stories. In 2006, the Boscow Family will join Terrace for the first time, trusting their son, Bartolomeo, into the care of the Christian Brothers’ tradition as did those first parents on that first day, one hundred and thirty years ago. Brisbane Priests visit Terrace

Fr Chalmers and eight other priests of the Archdiocese visited Terrace to speak to the Year 11s and Year 12s about the priesthood in today’s world. They spoke about what it was like to be a priest in today’s Church and how they discerned God’s call. We hope that this will become an annual event. President Xanana Gusmao Visits Terrace The visit of the President of another country to St Joseph’s College is a very rare event! The June edition of 1999 of The Terracian recalled the visit of Mr Eamon DeValera, President of the Republic of Ireland, to Gregory Terrace which occurred in 1948 as part of his Australian visit. The Headmaster of the time was Br Levander. This was the first visit to Terrace of a current Head of State. The second visit happened on a recent evening in the Campbell Centre. The visitor [At right, meeting Terrace teacher, Mr Conor Finn] arrived with an escort of motorcycle police and official cars. He entered the Campbell Centre to great enthusiam from a gathering of many East Timorese citizens studying or working in Brisbane or who had connections with this new country or, like many Terrace students and their families, had spent some weeks near Dili learning about the people. Our visitor was His Excellency, Mr Xanana Gusmao, President of East Timor and former independence leader who was elected in a landslide by the people in the first elections ever held in that country in April 2002. Older Australians have great affection for the people of East Timor who helped (even to death) the 230 Australian soldiers who waged a guerilla campaign for as many months as they could against the Japanese who had invaded Dutch New Guinea (now Indonesia) in 1942. It is estimated that 60,000 Timorese were killed at that time. After the Pacific War, Indonesia became independent of Holland and in December 1975 Indonesia invaded East Timor (which had again become a Portuguese territory after the War) and by July 1976 had proclaimed East Timor as the 27th Indonesian Province. The UN never recognised Indonesia’s right to East Timor, but the Security Council took no action. UN members did not recognise the right of Indonesia to seize East Timor and only one country recognised the illegal occupation - Australia! In November 1991 the Indonesian army massacred many protesters at Santa Cruz Cemetery in Dili causing world-wide protests. In 1996 Bishop Belo of Dili and Jose-Ramos Horta won the Nobel Peace Prize and when the Soeharto regime collapsed in 1998 his successor President Habibie announced a referendum for Timorese autonomy. In May 1999 Indonesia and Portugal signed an agreement calling on the UN to conduct a ballot. We all remember the horror that followed with 80% of East Timorese wanting independence and militia and regular army troops rampaging through the country. Fortunately Australia was one of those countries who joined in the sending of UN troops to help organise the first elections of April 2002 when Xanana Gusmao won a great victory and Independence was officially declared May 2002. East Timor has an area of 15,000 square kilometres and a population of just over a million people. Its two official languages are Portuguese and Tetum. The currency at present is the US$. Most of these events have happened in the memory of our secondary students and two groups of our Year 10’s have had the chance to visit East Timor and see for themselves how hard the people are working to try to develop what they have - and many Australians are helping as best they can. Terrace is 130 Years Old! At right is the scene inside St Stephen’s Cathedral on the morning of 15 July as Archbishop John Battersby sits enthroned, flanked by eleven Old Boy priests of Terrace, with College Principal, Mr Peter Chapman, welcoming well over a thousand students, parents and friends to our Eucharist of Thanksgiving for blessings on the school over 130 years.. What a contrast to the beginning of Terrace not much more than fifty metres away from the very place! Then there were 26 students, three Brothers and a handful of parents gathered to bless the foundation! Before Mass began one hundred and thirty students, one for each year of the school, moved up the aisle and were met by three Brothers. One was the oldest Brother past student of Terrace, one was a current member of the Queensland Brothers’ Executive and a past student, while the third is a Brother currently serving at Terrace. The students then “entered” the old school at Pugin’s Chapel and placed a card naming one student for each of the 130 years with his year of commencing. Some of these became very well known, others were the same “unsung heroes” as most Terrace students over 130 years have been, raising a family, serving God and helping others.

GT Celebrates 130 Years Christian Brothers Share in the Celebration

Terrace was the first Christian Brothers’ school in Queensland and the Brothers share the 130th anniversary with the school.Many of them were educated at Terrace and later became Brothers themselves; as also many became priests. These were also celebrated. Old Boy priests and brothers were presented with a named Terrace plaque.

Golden Jubilee of Ordination Fathers Dore and Hernon Since the priests had worked in North Queensland, their celebrations with parishoners were mainly in Cairns and Townsville. There were gatherings in places where they have retired to in the last few years, but their main interest in Brisbane was to return to their place of schooling and to celebrate with others of their ordination year - and Fr Hernon spoke briefly on that topic!

There were some from their schooldays present, but those in attedance were mostly relations who had gathered for the Jubilees. It was a very special occasion and a very happy one. Fr Dore’s grand-uncle, Eddie Dore, was the first Terrace Wallaby in 1904 while his father, Vince, captained Queensland in Rubgy League. His sister, Sr Gabrielle Dore, was on the staff of Terrace as a Librarian in the 1980s. Fr Hernon’s two brothers are Christian Brothers. One, Br Leo Hernon, is wellknown to many Terrace teachers.

Chapel of the Holy Family: This photo shows the sanctuary at the Chapel as Fr Dore, second from the right, welcomed the congregation to the Mass and thanked Mr Chapman for allowing the Jubilee to be held at Terrace. Both of them had celebrated Mass for the students fifty years ago, soon after their ordination. Fr Hernon is at the far right. Ten members of the Middle School Singers were available for singing and they were excellent! Their Conductor, on the far left, was Ms Bernadette Debattista. Academic Medals can be a Family Affair Academic Medals are now part of school studies at Terrace - and are very desirable. There are definite criteria to achieve before a Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal is awarded. This year the Semester One medals were awarded in mid-July at a College Assembly.

A new seat at Tennyson

The Quinn Family recently placed a plaque on a new seat at Tennyson Playing Fields in memory of Dr Redmond Quinn. Mr Robert and Andrew Quinn, Dr Quinn’s son and grandson attached the plaque which reads “Donated in memory of Dr Redmond Quinn (1919-2004), College Captain 1936 - a lifelong supporter of Terrace.” Mr Chapman said that the College was most grateful for this kind gesture by the Quinn family in recognising the life of a true Terrace Gentleman.

Interhouse Choir and Showcase Finale Concert, 2005 At the end of July the Campbell Centre was the scene of much excitement and applause as parents and fellow students enjoyed the outstanding talent that was displayed by a number of individual performers and the various House Choirs. The House Choirs are organised by the Senior students and really show the spirit, enthusiasm and leadership that are such an essential part of the College House system. The spirit and support that is so often demonstrated in both sporting and cultural programs is something that enhances what happens in the College’s teaching and learning programs. Mr Chapman (College Principal) congratulated all involved: the Senior students, Miss Vicki Sargent, Mrs Yvonne Carr and Mr Glenn Brown (all from College Staff) and Mrs Catherine McKechnie and the Performing Arts Committee for what was a great evening of entertainment and fun. He also congratulated Joe Tuton (12M) for winning the People’s Choice Award with his individual performance on the piano and to Kearney House Captains Scott Tweedie and Joseph Douglas and the young men of Kearney House who were awarded the 2005 House Choir Award. This was the first time Kearney House has won this Competition which began in 1994.

Enjoying strings at Terrace “Terrace Strings Extravaganza”

The inaugural “Terrace Strings Extravaganza” was the brainchild of Mrs Domenica Kelly and was held in the Chapel of the Holy Family on Friday 5 August. It was an absolutely outstanding evening of music-making and showcased our beautiful Chapel as a perfect venue for a Strings Concert. [Picture at right]

All of our Strings players took part and the highlight for everyone was the Finale item which was performed by every string student at Terrace, from Year 5 beginners to our most advanced players. Thanks to Mrs Kelly for ably organising and planning the programme. To the strings team of Mr Katei Chang (Upper Strings), Ms Deborah Davis (Cello) and Mr Béla Piri (Double Bass) we also extend our heartfelt thanks for their efforts in preparing students for the concert. Thanks also to Ms Angelina Ellis for her Classical Guitar Ensemble and finally to Mrs Laura Sweeney and her helpers for organising and serving supper.
