ur bi-centenary banner highlights the continuity of Edmund Rice Education from 1802 to the present time. The recent Christian Brothers Congregation Chapter in Rome reaffirmed the call of each of us in the Edmund Rice communities of the twenty-first century to be people who ‘Remember the past, Live the present and Seek the future’. The international gathering confirmed seven key points at the heart of the Edmund Rice ethos: o Educating the minds and hearts of the young o Healing and reconciliation – a need and a call o Deepening the Spirituality of being a Christian Brother o Seeking new Brothers o The Edmund Rice Network – the unfolding story o A prophetic call to a quest for Justice o New Wineskins for new Wine These global directions provide a context for ongoing renewal in a school such as Terrace as we celebrate our links directly to those first Christian Brothers led by Br Joe Barrett our Founding Headmaster. From that day – 5 July 1875 – the Terrace community has continued to grown even stronger.

On Thursday 25 July we welcomed to the College for the first time the new Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese, Bishop Brian Finnigan who concelebrated our Bi-centenary Mass with a large number of our Old Boy Priests. One of the highlights of the liturgy was the renewal of the vows of the four Christian Brothers who were present that day. The liturgy was a fitting celebration of our community in gratitude for those who have gone before us.

As a further part of the Australian celebrations of the bi-centenary of Edmund Rice education, I was privileged to participate in the biennial THE BROTHERS OF GREGORY TERRACE Conference of the Association of Heads of Edmund Rice Schools in Aus- FROM LEFT: Brothers Damian Price (Dean of Staff and tralia, hosted at Aquinas College in Perth by its current Headmaster Mr Ministry), Fergus Gagen (Archives), John O’Leary (Teaching Staff) with a visitor from Indooroopilly, Br Tony White Bob White (GT Senior ’65). The Conference brought together forty-two Heads of Australian and New Zealand Schools accountable to their various Province Leadership Teams. The programme focussed on issues of boys’ education, service learning programmes and the spirituality of leadership. Our special guest, Mr Robert McCarthy, Principal of Mt Sion School in Waterford represented the continuity of Edmund Rice Education since its commencement there in 1802. I enjoyed the opportunity as well to visit the Benedictine Monastery at New Norcia where the current Abbott is a Queenslander. Interestingly, he is an old boy of Brisbane State High School and after becoming a Catholic in his mid twenties, joined the Benedictines at Downside Abbey in Bath U.K., with whom Terrace has exchange arrangements.

On August 28 Terrace continued its great tradition of success in the Grand Final of the Queensland Debating Union. This is the ninth consecutive year in which our Senior A Team has participated in the Final, winning seven. The team of Tristan Douglas, Tom Gole, Raphael Hudson, Gobind Kalsi and Alex Meaney were winners against a very worthy competition from Indooroopilly State High School. Our Year Eleven team consisting of Safraz Marikar, Patrick Morgan, Adam Pennicott and John Varghese were also successful in a close contest with Brisbane Grammar School.

Our congratulations to these two teams. This year, Terrace had twenty-eight Debating teams culminating in winning both the GPS Premiership and the Queensland Debating Union Grand Final. A SUB-JUNIOR CLASS, 1944 This photo shows a class of forty-four Sub-Juniors after Australia had completed five full years of War. Many Terrace families had lost fathers and brothers;though some would return from POW camps. Clothes rationing was strict and its effects can be seen in socks and suits.

rother Rodgers arrived at Gregory Terrace in 1960 and left at the end of 1968. During this time he taught English, Latin, Ancient History, Logic and CD in Senior; English, Latin, Logic, French, Ancient History, Accounting, CD in Sub-Senior; French, Latin, CD, Maths B, French in Junior and sometimes Latin and French in Sub-Junior. What a variety of subjects at Senior level!

And Senior students at Terrace would soon guess if a teacher lacked depth in knowledge of a subject being taught! And in 1967 with 342 in 7 primary classes and 715 in 17 secondary classes, the roll passed 1000 for the first time ever. [Photo at right - at St Laurence’s, early in 2002] “Brother was an ex-student of St Edmund’s Ipswich, did his teacher training at Strathfield and graduated from Sydney University. His remarkable memory, keen judgement, persuasive policy and quiet sense of humour, together with a hands-on approach enabled him to achieve much... and he had a keen desire to help the battlers who found study hard...He is remembered by hundreds of old boys who respected his forthright manner, adherence to principles and dedication to the faith community of the College.” [John Coman, Principal, St Mary’s, Toowoomba - 13.06.02]

At Terrace Br Rodgers will be always associated with Tennyson. In his second year at Terrace the College signed Len Walczak in the Archives after Br Rodgers’ funeral a contract to buy 18 acres at Vivian Street Yerongpilly for £12000 and the statutory deposit of ne of the Terrace Old Boys who attended the £1200 was quickly paid. His was the first funeral for an Old Boy in the College Chapel and his Army friends provided a Guard of Honour for him and with one of his sons, spoke about him at the Mass.

And often he mntioned the Lawsons, father and son. James Dobie Lawson, the father, was born in 1910 and attended Terrace 1922-1924. He died recently in his old age.

One of those who attended his funeral was Redmond Quinn (GT 1934-36) who wrote: “Jim, Senior, was a GT Old Boy, a very great supporter and a wonderful fellow and at his death at 92 a likely, though unconfirmed, oldest Old Boy.” “He was an old friend of mine who played in the GPS Old Boys Cricket Competition [December, 1996 Terracian] which competed enthusiastically for a few years after the Second World War - Jim Mahoney captained the GT team.

“So I put on my Terrace tie and attended his Requiem and at the graveside threw a scoop of sand on the coffin on behalf of Gregory Terrace in memory.”

May he rest in peace.

n May, 2001, the birth into everlasting life was celebrated of Edward Anthony Mulry. He was the last of four brothers, all of them past students of Terrace. The eldest died in 1992 and was a well-known Christian Brother was came late to his vocation.

Edward’s parents - his father from Ireland and his mother from England - married in St Stephen’s Cathedral on 25 April, 1900. The family moved around Brisbane, first to Paddington, then to the Red Hill area and finally to Wynnum. His education was with the Sisters of Mercy at Rosalie and the Christian Brothers at St James and then St Joseph’s at Gregory Terrace. It was here that Ed was Dux in 1924.

His working life began with brief exposures to the Forestry profession and to teacher training before opting for the clerical staff of the Department of Forestry. He qualified as an accountant by correspondence. His clerical duties began on the Atherton Tableland until he was transferred to Brisbane in 1935. When war broke out in 1939 he enlisted and was assigned to an artillery regiment and was stationed for twelve months near Townsville and another twelve months near Darwin. By the time the war ended he was serving in an amphibious Duck Unit operating in Borneo. On his return to civil life Ed transferred from Forestry to the Department of the Coordinator General and later to the Lands Department where he became Senior Clerk. One of his duties was to edit and publish the Lands Court Gazette.

On home leave after hospitalisation Ed married Gezina DeLange whom he had met in 1931, but with the death of her father and the outbreak of war they did not marry until January 1942.

Their marriage was a happy one, but not blessed with children. They then retired to Mary Crest in 1982 until 1988 when Gezina died of a heart attack. Edward survived her by some dozen years.

He died full of years at ninety-four. May he rest in peace.

Among his prized possessions was the silver fob watch he had won in 1924. His executor, William Ridley (GT 1944-45) - who also had an uncle who was an Old Boy and a Christian Brother, “Bud” Ridley (GT 1917) - thought that the best thing he could do with such a valuable souvenir of the school in 1924 would be to present the watch to the Archives. So he did - and we are very grateful for that. The watch is on display in the Trophy Cabinet in the Administration area.

It remained one of Ed Mulry’s prized possessions and he left it in his will to William Ridley, who is pictured with his wife when he returned to the Archives with the watch in July. [Left below] As you can appreciate William found many huge changes in the environs of St Joseph’s College in the time since he left in 1945. When he left the school there were three buildings that made up Terrace - Brothers’ House, College Hall and the Science block. There was also the Handball Court built in 1908 and in the 1939-45 War the Rifle Range was set up across the yard past College Hall facing Rogers Street. The mind boggles at the thought of a rifle range there today! But I guess with the War in progress, extra things were permitted! And as far as we know eople have often commented on the fact that in 2002, there was no accident involving students using the 0.22 bore rifle range across the school yard!

Tennyson was such a superb choice for the Terrace Playing Fields. It was Jim Lawson, Senior, who assessed the sites being considered by Br Campbell and the Brothers and strongly recommended Tennyson, while stressing that it was in a flood area.

After the fields were constructed, Jim worked with Br Campbell, Br Rodgers, many supporters of Terrace under the guidance of Bill Wilkes (RIP) then Secretary of the State Forestry Department to have a very comprehensive and sophisticated plan for treeing the area. The work was particularly difficult as much of Tennyson, especially near the creek, was heavily overgrown and almost inaccessible.

BR GRAEME LEACH

G

raeme Leach had a brief stay at Terrace, 195051, on his way to do his secondary studies at Christian Brothers in Strathfield. Later he opened a Teachers’ College in Wewak for the Catholic Bishops in PNG. Now he has become almost a household name in many parts of PNG since he established disability services in mainstream education, health and church pastoral services.

At present he is on long service furlough and will return to PNG next year. [Picture below] These services are called Callan Services for Disabled Persons. Note the “Callan” which shows it is part of Edmund Rice Services. He has organised Callan Projects in eleven different areas of PNG. And unlike what happens to many of such projects where interest soon dies after an enthusiast moves on, Br Leach uses his contacts with missionary groups to make sure that qualified overseas experts are sent to help in as many places as can be organised.

ROCKHAMPTON REUNION, 2002

he Annual Reunion of Terracians around the Capricorn area was recently held at the Great Western Hotel in the city.

After the last event was delayed because of the death of wellknown identity Terry Moore (1946-49) and memories of incredible heat, this was a winter Reunion and all decided it was about the best ever!

TUCKSHOP - THE GOOD OLD DAYS

D

uring the mid-year holidays an old Price List was found behind one of the fridges in the Canteen. [At left] Currently people in the Canteen do not remember prices at this level (and they go back for about fifteen years).

In July this year the College engaged the services of Spotless Services Limited to manage the operations of the Tuckshop. This arrangement is designed to increase and improve the menu range as well as introducing relevant food handling health requirements.

A vital part of the arrangement is the continued presence of volunteer mums who assist with the preparation and sale of food. While the tuckshop continues to offer traditional fare such as pies and sausage rolls, boys can now also choose from such delights as fresh muffins and bagels as well as hot dishes like Asian noodles.

200 YEARS OF EDMUND RICE EDUCATION

T

his year it is 200 years since Edmund Rice opened his first school in a stable in Waterford, Ireland. Edmund had been a wealthy merchant who provided supplies for the scores of ships that used Waterford as their provisioning port in the late 1700s. When he was 23 he married Mary Elliot in 1785 and in 1788 she was expecting a baby. (This was the year the First Fleet reached Sydney.) However Mary suffered some kind of accident and the baby was born in January 1879 and Mary died from complications.

Edmund was concerned for his daughter and arranged for his stepsister to come and live in their house and care for young Mary. Edmund became increasingly uneasy with his growing wealth and during this period he became very interested in helping the poor. In 1795 he inherited his uncle’s thriving business. As he passed his fortieth year he made his first definite move towards his dream - helping to right the injustices of the poor.

To the horror of his “friends” Edmund renovated some stables in New Street, Waterford, that his wife had owned and began a school for “street kids” in Part of Edmund’s original” Mount Sion” in Waterford.

1802. His two paid assistants gave up teaching these “uncontrollable boys”, but two men joined him in his idea of starting a religious congregation for educating boys. And some of Edmund’s business friends pressured the Irish Protestant Bishop to give Edmund permission to start his school!

Edmund sold up his business and invested in property and cattle and this money helped his congregation to survive for many years.

His daughter Mary had been raised by his brothers Richard and then Patrick who had no children of his own. She survived Edmund and died in 1859.

Meantime Edmund started building a proper school and a house for his small community. This school was named “Mount Sion” and was opened on 7 June, 1803.

The anniversary we celebrated at Terrace on July 25 this year was the opening of his first “stable school” in 1802. The main celebrant was Bishop Brian Finnigan, Auxiliary Bishop of BrisBishop Finnigan blesses a student bane, making his first official visit to Terrace. He informed us that he was himself a past student of the Christian Brothers at St Patrick’s Ballarat.

One of the Old Boy priests present, Fr James O’Donoghue, read from St Luke’s Gospel.

Bishop Finnigan gave a very appropriate “Edmund Ignatius Rice” Homily.

The Prayers of the Faithful were led by Piers Cooke (12W), Mr Chris Campbell, Hugh O’Connell (12R), David Robertson (12K), Mr Mario Patane and Mrs Dianne Gamble.

Phil Beaver (12K) and Patrick Kelly (12B) brought the gifts to the Altar while the singers were Paul Hodge (10M) and Raph Hudson (12T). The musicians led by Mrs Yvonne Carr and Mrs Genevieve Claffey were David Butler (8K), Will Feeney (11R), Patrick Morgan (11T), Peter See (12K) and Martin Taylor (12W).

After the Communion there was a Ceremony of Commitment. First the Staff, led by Dr McManus committed themselves to serve the school family, then the students led by the Fr James O’Donoghue (78-82) College Captain promised to use their gifts to serve God and his people; and then the three Christian Brothers on the staff and one visiting from the Trustees of the Christian Brothers, Brothers Gagen, O’Leary, Price and White, stated, “In the presence of this community and our faithful God, we today renew our vows of chastity, poverty and obedience forever....”

Thanks were expressed for all who gave up part of their day to help us celebrate two hundred years of Edmund Rice education. It is certainly a good experience for students and staff to see that so many past students who are priests were ready to celebrate this important anniversary with the students who are currently part of Terrace, 2002.

arlier this year the Christian Brothers in the Queensland and Northnce again there was a group of thirty students students vying for the ern Territory Province voted for a new Leadership Team. “Old hands” chance to have four weeks in St Louis, Missouri, at Chaminade at Terrace will quickly recognise some College. The selection process is very thorough and the committee members names. Br Luke Quinn has continued in his were Mr Stan Carr (from Rotary International), Ms Eve Banathy role as Province Leader and the new (representing the teaching staff), Mr Phil Beaver one of last year’s exchange Deputy Leader is Br Barry Buckley an Old students and Mr Dominic Katter from the Terrace Old Boys Association, Boy of the College (1951-52) and past who provide the major funding for the process. Another Old Boy (1953-57) and past The students finally selected were Robert Carroll and Lachlan Mitchell, staff member (1978-81), well known for both of Kearney House. his football summaries, is Br Michael Ryan. The third with Br Barry Buckley in 1980 strong Terrace connections is Br Ted Magee, a past Principal (1990-92) who was immediately before Dr McManus. The fifth Trustee is Br Paul Conn who also taught at Terrace in 1985.

The Editor is sure he is speaking for all Old Boys when he sends our sincere support to the members of the new Leadership Team. They will be responsible for Terrace, Nudgee, St Laurence’s, St Brendan’s Yeppoon, Ignatius Park Townsville, St Patrick’s Shorncliffe, St Edmund’s Ipswich, Nudgee Junior and Centre Education, Kingston.

Staff and students have been exchanged between the Colleges for some time now and every effort is made by staff and host families to make the exchange educational and very interesting. By chance our students were in St Louis on September 11 last year and they found that quite an eye-opening experience.

The Terrace students will have two weeks living in the residential section of Chaminade - a very new experience for our students - and then have two weeks living with a host family.

We wish that it will be a successful experience for them.

students selected to take part in the National Championships, this year in Adelaide. The others came from Padua College and Brisbane Grammar. The coach was Mr Simon Quinn (GT 99) and the Manager was Mr Ryan Goss, (Grammar 1999)..

Both Simon and Ryan have been previous outstanding members of the Queensland and then the Australian Debating Teams. (I am sure that older students will remember the heady days at the end of 1999 when Simon after heading Australia’s winning debating team in London was awarded the prize for the best debater in the series!) It is great to see that both these excellent debaters have chosen to give so generously of their time to assisting current debaters in the Queensland team..

Debating is very popular at Terrace with plenty of primary and lower secondary students willing to spend a lot of time preparing to become successful debaters.

he College has developed a very positive partnership through the Terrace Cardinals with the Bank of Queensland and in mid-July the Head of the Private Banking section, MrElseworth Ephraums, presented a cheque to the College. The College hopes that parents and Old Boys are able to show the Bank that we appreciate their support.

Such support is often made possible through the active support of the Terrace Cardinals Committee whose work provides funds for the academic, co-curricular and spiritual programmes for our students and provide support for the professional support of our staff. n excellent Guest Speaker at the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association Annual Dinner was Mr Tony Fingleton. A new movie soon to be released is the story of his life - Swimming Upstream.

Tony now lives in the United States and one of his reasons for being in Australia just now is to address the Old Boys. And we certainly welcome him back and wish that his movie does well!

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF WORK FOR THE QUEENSLAND GPS

O

ne of the great advantages of belonging to the GPS Association in Queensland is that since 1918 it has consisted of a group of schools united with high ideals of what education for boys should (and could) be.

There is a very dedicated group of people who work tirelessly to have a programme organised in sporting, cultural and religious activities that are excellently run and dedicated to having accurate results from each activity. The one in charge is the Honorary Secretary of the GPS Association of Queensland.

One of such a group is Mr Bob Jones, [pictured at left], who has dedicated the last twenty-five years to the GPS Association as the Honorary Secretary. Old Boys who were at the school in 1977 probably might not understand how different the Association is now from then. There has been a great growth in the GPS competition, in the range and diversity of the activities and in the consistently high quality of performance of all that has been under Bob’s care.

For example: Basketball, began 1986; Chess (1995); Debating (1991); Soccer (1991); Volleyball (1994); Sailing (2000); Gymnastics Aggregate (1991) and Rowing Aggregate (1988).

It is interesting to note that since 1918 when the GPS started there have been only six GPS Secretaries! The first was Norman Connal who served for ten years until 1928 and he later became Headmaster of the Prep School in Toowoomba. Next was the famous Jack Ross of Nudgee who held the position for 31 years until ill-health forced him to retire in 1959. Reg Hubbard also had to resign through ill-health after only two years. The next Hon Secretary was Herb Lehmann who had been Assistant Secretary to Mr Hubbard. He was Secretary for twentyfive years. Next our current Principal (Dr B.J. McManus) was Hon Sec for a few years and then twenty-five years ago Bob Jones became GPS Secretary and it was appropriate that he was presented to a School Assembly at Terrace and thanked by all for his long years of service.

GTOBA RACE DAY AND TLG/GTOBA GOLF DAY THE GOLF DAY

riday August 16 saw 118 keen golfers drink and laugh their way around Indooroopilly golf course. Ten holes were sponsored by HSBC Bank Australia, Whittaker McNaught, Wilson HTM, ABN AMRO Morgans, Danka, Flannery Family, John Sivvyer Holden, The Inchcolm Boutique Hotel, The Terrace Cardinals, Glenrand MacDermott and many generous businesses supplied great prizes and donations.

The TLG President, Virginia Morgan, presented the TLG Trophy to the winning team “The Gems” made up of Sally Grantley, Jenny Morgan, Linda Scott and Jane Evans whose father is an Old Boy. Rod Halligan, Eric Oxenford, Warwick Oxenford and Jeremy King won the GTOBA Shield. OUT OF THE PAST......

ichard Thompson was at the school in 1901 preparing for the Civil Service exam when photos for the 1901 Silver Jubilee Booklet were taken and the booklet has survived.. Three of his brothers also attended Terrace, the first was in 1877 - two years after the school opened, but we have no photos of them. William was fourth in Queensland in the Civil Service in 1900 and Richard was 15th in 1903. Richard began at Terrace in 1896, started work in 1903 and eventually became Acting Permanent Head of his Department (Labour and Industry) in 1942, just a month after he got the news that his first born son, Evan, RAAF pilot was killed on a bombing flight over Emden Germany. He continued as Acting Departmental Head from 1942-47. Then Colin Clark became Permanent Head and Richard returned to his old position. He died in 1949 when he was only sixty-three. (Richaed had also become the first President of the Legion of Mary in Brisbane.)

The granddaughter, Catherine, doing the family history brought his two surviving twin daughters with her when she visited the Archives recently. They were both nuns and said that three others of their sisters also joined the Sisters of St Joseph, but had died over the years.[Photo below] One of their brothers was Evan Thompson who attended Terrace from 1932-1936. Evan was then at University but joined the RAAF and the 1941 Magazine wrote, “Sgt./Pilot Evan Thompson had piloted a Handley-Page Hampden on many successful operations over Germany.” He was captain of the First XV and the Athletics Team at Terrace. His Vice-Captain in the Rugby was Cyril Wilkinson. Redmond Quinn, Bob (“Wallaby Bob”) McMaster and Bernie O’Sullivan (RIP) were also in the team.

RICHARD THOMPSON’S TWO SURVIVING DAUGHTERS Just over a hundred years since the top right photo was taken outside College Hall, Richard’s surviving daughters visited the Archives with their niece. They saw photos of their father and brother (Evan).

nother of Richard’s sons, also named Richard (“Dick”) started at Terrace in 1937, but completed his education at Nudgee 1938-1939. He joined the RAAF in World War 2 just as Evan did. However he survived the war and still lives in Brisbane. His daughter, Cath [Picture at left], is the one who initiated this whole interesting “connection” through her work in getting together a family history. Two great-grandsons continue the connection with the Christian Brothers - they attend St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe.

I would presume that this must be a somewhat unique photo [Left]. I guess a few Terracians would have five daughters, but I am pretty sure that no other Terracian had five daughters who ALL became nuns and all remained in the convent! THE LAST OF THE BUCHANAN MEDALS, 1925

QUEENSLAND ROBOCUP COMPETITION, 2002

P

rofessor James Mahoney (RIP), who was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in 1929, won the last of the Buchanan medals in 1925 - the fortyfirst of the series which Mrs Jessie Buchanan began in 1885 in memory of her husband.

The College Medal now presented to our outstanding scholars of each year is a facsimile of the 1899 Buchanan medal.

When presenting the 1997 Scholars Medals at the College soon after his father’s death, James Junior [Pictured below left at a Reunion in 1985] promised that he would return the Medal to the College.

He read from the speech his father had written for the occasion and said, I still have the Buchanan Medal , the last one awarded, and I shall be happy to leave it to the College for its Archives if that is appropriate.

The photo [Above] shows Ms Grealey-Ridley presenting the 1925 Buchanan Medal to Dr McManus at the College in late August - through the generosity of Mr J.J.D. Mahoney. He also won the Rhodes Scholarship in 1963 and thus Terrace had one of the few father/son Rhodes Scholars we know about.

hese students from Year 7 made a robot capable of “dancing” to music of their choice. It did not walk on its rear wheels, but it certainly moved back and forth and sideways in time with music played on a computer which also programmes all of the many movements. The machine [pictured at right]

was in the middle of the classroom and the computer on a desk well away. When the Editor remembers what he was interested in during his Year 7 in 1944, it certainly did not run to robotics!

Part of the requirements of the competition was that they were required to design, create and program the robot. They finished 2nd out of the twenty competing teams.

The students won a large Lego set which they presented to the College. Congratulations!

GTOBA - ANNUAL DINNER, RACE DAY AND GOLF DAY

T

he Old Boys gathered for their Annual Dinner this year at the Brisbane Tattersalls Club on July 26. A healthy number of 170 attended.

The dinner boasted the attendance of three women: Ms Di Fingleton CSM, Mrs Cecily Hesse and Mrs Shirley Goy. The guest speaker, Mr Tony Fingleton, (Senior 1957), spoke about his career as a script writer in America; he having lived in New York since the early 1960’s. Tony’s talk was neatly introduced by the showing of a trailer of the upcoming motion picture Swimming Upstream. This film focuses attention on the Fingleton family and stars Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis. Just from the trailer alone, one could see what an impact Geoffrey Rush will have on the big screen when the movie premiers in November. Tony Fingleton predicted to me that Geoffrey Rush will win an Oscar for his performance! The dinner which was enjoyed by all included good food and pleasant McGuigan’s wine to wash it down. The last person to leave the member’s bar at 1.30 a.m. is an honorary life member of the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association. I will leave it to you to guess who she is.

The chief coordinator of the dinner was Mr Michael O’Rourke and I thank Michael for the many hours of work he put in to make sure that tables were coordinated and that everything ran smoothly.

The pouring of McGuigan’s wine did not stop at the dinner; it kept flowing into the following day at Eagle Farm for the running of the McGuigan’s Gregory Terrace Cup. All tickets were sold and a very enjoyable afternoon was had by all. The Fingleton clan was also present.

This was their chance to let their hair down following the somewhat formal dinner the night before. Mr Neil Doherty, the Registrar of the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Committee, is to be congratulated not only for his hard work in organising this event, but for his constant enthusiasm in ensuring that this event be placed firmly back on the Old Boys’ Calendar and that Old Boys, family and friends just have a jolly good time at the Races! [See page 10] On August 16 the Terrace Golf Day was held at Indooroopilly Golf Club. The event was co-hosted by the Terrace Ladies Group and the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association. Approximately 120 players took part with tremendous spirit and friendliness. The Terrace Shield was taken out again by a group led by Mr Rod Halligan. Congratulations to Rod and his crew. A big thank you to Mrs Peggy Flannery (Terrace Ladies Group) for her expert organisation of the day. [See page 10] A flyer should be coming out shortly about the Old Boys cricket day to be held at Tennyson on Sunday October 13 and followed a week later by an Old Boys’ tennis afternoon on October 20. The organiser of the cricket is Mr Dominic Katter (mobile 0407 678 151); please contact Mr Michael Rackermann (phone 3221 7166) in relation to the tennis.

ick Spenger (12B) represented Australia in the Oceania Games in New Caledonia. His outstanding results were three golds - in the 200m freestyle (record) and in the 200m freestyle and the 4 x 200m relay.

At the beginning of the year Nicholas was announced as the Captain of the Terrace Swimming Team with Dan de Luca as ViceCaptain. They won fourth place.

SIMON NASH, GOLFER

uring his time at Terrace, Simon Nash VERSUS (1988-1995) was associated in stu- ACGS dents’ minds with Volleyball - where he was BBC captain of the First VI and in Basketball BGS BSHS where he played in the Second V. GT However at the end of July 2002 he joined the elite group of golf amateurs who have won IGS the prestigious Porter Cup at Niagara Falls. NC This is regarded as one of the top three ama- TGS TSS teur tournaments in the United States.

He always enjoyed golf, but he did not play much while he was at Terrace. After school he became club champion at Indooroopilly and took out the Australian foursomes title in 2000. In 2000 he accepted a scholarship to the University of Minnesota to major in economics. He was a great asset in the University’s first win in the NCAA Championship victory this year.

He beat many Australian golfers in the 44th Porter Cup including the Australian Amateur Champion by 19 strokes.

Well done, Simon!

s part of their preparation the team travelled to Riverview College at Lane Cove in Sydney. It was founded by the Jesuit Order in 1880 and currently has about 1300 students. It is one of the nine Sydney GPS Colleges and the picture above shows the Terrace students on the platform in front of their Rowing Shed on Lane Cove in Sydney Harbour.

They had plenty of opportunities to sightsee as well as train hard for the CrossCountry. The two coaches involved were Mr Coman and Mr Hinch. The results on the previous page would certainly suggest that the training and practice time was used well! Congratulations!

As usual the scores were read out by the chief announcer from the lowest and moved towards those with major placings.

After the formal announcement that Terrace had won the 2002 GPS CrossCountry there was a surge towards Captain Matthew Horrocks and the famous Jack Ross Trophy.

Here the Captain and the Trophy are being held up in honour of another Terrace Premiership!

To win the Championship by seven points was an excellent result.

he Consultant in Residence Program for 2002 was named “The Literary Feast” and organised by the Faculty of Language Arts. The program involved many prominent writers, peformers and illustrators working with the students from Year 5 to Year 12 over a two week period.

The presentators all specialise in young adult fiction and entertainment and included James Moloney, Marcus Zusak and Simon Higgins to name a few.

Also very popular with the boys were the illustrator Terry Denton, journalist Sean Dorney and performer Karm Gillespie.

The program was both challenging and stimulating and was well received by the students.

It involved a real cross-section of contemporary authors, many of whom are studied as part of our English curriculum. All students had the opportunity to attend whole group presentations, small group workshops and individual interviews. The boys have been enthusiastic and the feedback is

positive.

Each day of the program was divided into three sessions. The first saw the consultant address the boys as a year level in the GT 125 Theatre. This was followed by small group workshops made up of about 20 - 25 students.

These sessions were available to all boys and were very popular. Finally in the afternoon, interested students met with the consultant for individual interviews. A lot of great work was done in these sessions.

What a variety there has been in the Consultant(s) in Residence!

BOOK WEEK – BOOK FEAST

T

he Consultant in Residence Program for 2002 and our Book Week Celebrations provided an opportunity for students to interact with many successful authors. These authors include Markus Zusak, Simon Higgins, Jonathan Harlen and James Moloney. As part of Book Week, an evening for ‘Blokes and Books’ was held in the College Library.

Research suggests that fathers are the main role models for reading in the lives of boys. Reading to boys on a daily basis is an investment in their success in learning to read and in their future literacy.

Stories play a major role in our understanding of the world around us. The “Blokes and Books” evening included not only time for quiet reading and sharing of favourite books and authors, but also activities related to the short-listed books for 2002, internet competitions, and an opportunity for parents and sons to meet and talk with well known author James Moloney.
