Welcome to this final edition of the Terracian for 2006 which comes with our best wishes and thanks to all in the Terrace community in this time of Advent and preparation for Christmas. In the course of the academic year much has happened at Terrace and I wish to congratulate and thank each of the various support groups, parents and staff who have supported the range of activities that have been part of 2006.

On the 16 November we saw the Graduation of the Senior Class of 2006 in what was a moving celebration and a wonderful display of spirit. The young men of the Senior class were a credit to themselves, their families and the College. It is most pleasing to note that the provisional Queensland Core Skills Test data for this group of young men clearly indicates that our recent graduates took advantage of the quality of the teaching and learning programs offered and have again achieved very high results. These are presented below as a comparison to the State wide figure. We await the Overall Performance Scores which will be available to students from

With the end of the year one might ask the question were we successful in what was achieved in 2006. Ultimately the success of any school year or any school can only be judged by the graduates it produces and that judgement can only be made some fifteen years or so later after they have left school. What sort of person have they become? Have they nurtured those qualities of soul planted in them at home and at school? Are they beginning to leave a thumb print on their world such that it is a better place for their pressure?

Rabindranth Tagore once wrote “The mountain remains unmoved at seeing defeat by the mist.” In other words, failure is not necessarily failure at all. It may simply be part of the process of becoming what we are really meant to be. Until we know defeat, we are almost never capable of real success. Sir Winston Churchill once said “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm” If you know Churchill’s story as a young man, you will appreciate the context of the wisdom expressed. On a different track, that great religious icon of India, Mother Teresa, was once asked why she continued to work in the appalling conditions of Calcutta when she had not succeeded in changing them very much.

Her profound answer was that it was much more important to be faithful than to be successful.

The definition of success as presented in some contexts may be too narrow.

Success is not simply and only about winning and while we like our share of this

in reality it is about the ability to develop and bring forth the innate goodness in the individual for the betterment of the community which is the basic platform for the Christian life. The 131st version of the modern Terracian is consistent with the concept of the Terrace Gentleman and at our Celebration of Excellence last month, as we acknowledged the outstanding effort of many deserving and outstanding individuals. I was also most aware that there were many young men in the audience who were not acknowledged formally on the stage as part of the celebration but, because of their innate goodness, they have been positive influences in this community in so many ways during 2006. Collectively, this group of young men, and there are many, have made a very significant contribution to what has been achieved this year. Dr Simon Longstaff, the Chief Executive Officer for the St James Ethics Centre captured this well when he wrote: “Some think that heroes are forged in the white heat of the dangerous moment. But there is another kind of hero – the person of quiet decency whose achievement is built over an entire career. We are held by the intensity of lightning, yet fail to mention the thunder that rolls on into the distance long after the lightning’s moment has passed.

We are captured by the tumultuous descent of the waterfall while the steady progress of the river is ignored. And we marvel at the ocean’s power unaware of the fact that we stand upon ground claimed for us by the silent witness of the ancient cliff.”

To the other kind of hero described

by Longstaff, we say thanks for your contribution to this community. Your support and presence are much appreciated and do not go unnoticed.

Why Waterford? - Founder’s Day Mass, 2006

“In this place I feel at home. Gregory Terrace in my schooldays consisted of three buildings surrounding the quadrangle: College Hall, the secondary classrooms and the Brothers’ House; and Billet Street now just a sign among the gum trees was functioning in all its glory. We began the school song, ‘Seventy years have now passed o’er us’..........Blessed Edmund Rice lived from 1762 to 1844. As a young man Edmund suffered the death of his wife, leaving him with their daughter who was born with a disability.

The Edmund Rice Day Mass [Above] was led by Fr Ray Brain CP [low right], with the participation of the whole student body and College staff.

After the Communion at the Mass came a Ceremony of Commitment when Mr Chapman led the Senior Class to resolve to challenge the world to live justly.

Then College Captain, Tim Beckman, led the Year 10 class of 2007 to a commitment to build a Christ-centred community at Waterford Place in 2007.

Drawing on his deep faith and his talent for business, Edmund was led to a new vocation to provide education for the poverty-stricken Catholic youth of Ireland.

Through this mission he founded the Christian Brothers in Waterford, a religious congregation which changed the face of Ireland and brought the Gospel to countless people.

The story of Edmund is a large story and I hope you do it well in class. However, no examination of Edmund’s life would be satisfactory without strong emphasis placed on the chief motivation force in his life: the following of Christ. Christ was first, second and third in Edmund’s life. Christ was gold, silver and bronze for him.”

Early Old Boy Priest and World War I Chaplain In the 1905 Terrace Magazine there is a photo of Fr William Howes, CSSR, taken at his ordination (left) in 1904. He was ordained in Belfast, Ireland.

He had been a student at Terrace from 1891-1896 and so was one of the very early Terracians who was ordained. The photo [left] (from Tom Johnstone’s The Cross of Anzac 2001) was taken some fourteen years later and shows Fr Howes in his Chaplain’s major uniform at Lourdes in France. He has a walking stick because he was badly gassed in battle. At this length of time after his duties as a Chaplain we know little about where he spent his time of service. We are still learning about the horrific slaughter that young Australian volunteers experienced in the trenches of France. He is named as a Chaplain on the WW1 Honour Board in College Hall.

Fr Howes returned to Australia after the War, but due to stresses and sickness he left the Redemptorists and eventually joined the Brisbane Archdiocese and became Parish Priest of Toogoolawah. He was an outstanding preacher and revered as a confessor. He died on 16 November 1933.

Brian Robinson, 1921-2006 Brian was born in 1921 and joined Gregory Terrace in 1933. He was in the 1934 photograph of Ted Stewart’s class-mates from last July’s “Terracian”. He completed his Senior year in 1940 and was a prefect at the College. He described Terrace as “Focusing me on study, immersing me in sport and helping me to grow through my teenage years to obtain entry to the University and the offer of a Teacher Training Scholarship.”

His teaching career was interrupted in 1942 when he joined the CMF to man searchlights. He transferred to the American Signal Intelligence Service as a code-breaker in 1944 until his discharge in 1946, having a time behind Japanese lines and witnessing first hand the surrended at Baguio and the acceptance by General MacArthur.

As a teacher he taught at seventeen schools, many in country Queensland. In 1953 he met his future wife, Gwen Lucy, whom he married in 1955 celebrating 50 years of marriage just before he died. He left behind his wife, three children and six grandchildren.

Brian enjoyed theatre and lively company.

He is remembered as having an ability with language that made people laugh and had him officiate at many weddings and personal and public celebrations. He will be well remembered by his family and his friends as a man of principle with a deep desire to do the right thing in life.

A rarely seen work of Art in the Old Chapel in the Treacy Building on Gregory Terrace The art works around the College are many and varied and some of these have been produced by Old Boys either when they were students or later on in their chosen cultural profession.

One of these artists is Raoul Mellish

who is shown in the December 2001 Terracian presenting his painting The Logan River at Beaudesert to Dr McManus for the Rush Room. Raoul also recently addressed the Sixty-Year jubilarians on the Queensland Art Gallery at their Reunion dinner.

He also wrote an article in the “Australian Dictionary of Biography” on William Bustard (1894-1973). What many older Terracians did not know when they made their visit to the Brothers’ Chapel during lunch time was that the stained-glass window they saw there - so full of glorious colour in the afternoon - was the magnificent creation of William Bustard. Because the area is now “out of bounds” it will not be seen until the renovation of The Brother Tracey building makes these areas accessible again.

An idea of the beauty of the Bustard creation can be seen from the photo at left which shows the window as it is at present.

It belongs to the days before Terrace had a “real” Chapel that the students felt they “owned”.

Morgan Windsor (1916-2006) Morgan Windsor was a student at Terrace from 1924-1932. He was the second member of the four Windsor sons - there was also a daughter. The Windsor name is revered at Terrace starting with Dr Harry, Senior. Harry Junior was first enrolled, then Morgan, next Gerry (killed in WW2) and Clem still happily surviving.

Morgan attended Queensland Uni after leaving Terrace and comleted a BA at the old Domain campus of the University. Next he entered the second year of Medicine at Sydney University and graduated in 1940 and after his obligatory year in St Vincent’s Hostpital he and the rest of his year wrere drafted into the RAAMC and soon departed for PNG.. He served in various Pacific theatres of war and was demobbed in 1946. He then joined his two brothers in medical studies in London and on their completion they returned to Australia.

A distinguished list of honours was bestowed on this “Gentleman of Terrace” for his professional achievements, but the one that gave him greatest sense of pride was the degree of Doctor of Surgery

(Honoris Causa) which is the highest medical award that a university can give.

Of his family of doctors, the father - Harry Senior - was the last of the four to receive this honour; and for four in one family is quite unique among medical families.

Morgan was a great family man and devoted husband. He married Annette Moir and they had three children: Anne, Thomas and Morgan. As Harry Junior wrote, “Family and family life pervaded our school days. We lived it at home, we were taught about it at school. So compelling were the lessons, so insistent was the advice that unselfishness and discipline made for a happy family, that to this day I am persuaded that failure in this matter, whatever the successes in other fields, is to fail in life.”

Using this criteria when Morgan, at 89, passed away on September 15, 2006, he had succeeded in life.

Year 10 Immersion, 2006 - Vanuatu Vanuatu for many is just another tourist destination. However for myself and the students on the Vanuatu Immersion it was far more than that. For once we weren’t tourists but travellers. Travellers on a journey to immerse ourselves in the Melanesian culture and use our French linguistic skills.

lived in very modest homes and were extremely proud of their school. They were just so keen to learn. They made us realise that what we have in Australia we sometimes take for granted. We then became motivated to raise funds to help finish the Grade Eight classroom and support families who have so little.

During our stay in Vanuatu we concentrated the majority of our time on Efate, the most inhabited island. Our days consisted of intense French lessons at Allaince Francais, visits to local schools, swimming at Lololima Cascades and a visit to Ekasup cultural village. We were even lucky enough to do some snorkelling and enjoy an afternoon of paintball at Le Meridien Resort.

This Immersion was a powerful insight into how the other half live.

However, I believe that the most memorable experience of the entire trip was when we visited Eratap, a primary school on the outskirts of Port Vila. It was obvious from the very start, when the local students placed floral leis around our necks, that they were very friendly and humble people.

RONNIE BRESLIN (9W) Ronnie’s great-great-grand uncle, Bishop Raphael Guizar of Mexico was canonised a Saint in October this year in Rome.

His great-great-grand uncle is a canonised Saint!

On October 15 this year Bishop Raphael Guizar of Mexico was declared a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI and for the parents of a student in Year 9 at Terrace this was very significant as this was his mother’s greatgrand uncle!

Raphael Guizar was one of the eleven children born to wealthy and pious landowners of Mexico. He wanted to become a priest and was ordained in 1901 and worked as an apostolic missionary among the Mexican people. He was the spiritual director of a large Seminary and used money from his family to build schools for boys and girls.

In 1911 the Mexican government began a state persecution of the Catholic Church.

Raphael moved around on the roads travelling as a merchant or a musician, ministering to the poor and preaching when he could. He eventually fled Mexico in 1916 after being condemned to death as a priest and thence to USA, then Guatamala

and Cuba. It was here that in 1919 he was named as Bishop of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico, where he arrived in 1920.

He spent the rest of his life working for the welfare of his Catholic people in the face of government opposition and persecution.

He proved so fearless and loved by the people that Governor Tejada of Veracruz feared an uprising if he had him killed. So he revoked the death sentence. Bishop Guizar finally died in 1938 in Mexico City, of natural causes.

We congratulate Ronnie Breslin (9W) [Photo at right] on the honour given to his family by Pope Benedict XVI both here and in Mexico.

(We notice that Morgan Windsor whose family name is used for Ronnie’s House at Terrace was a schoolboy here at Terrace from 1924-1932 while Bishop Raphael was being hunted by the State Police in his bishopric of Veracruz............ Not all that long ago really!)

Year 10 Immersion, 2006 Game Programming

“Waterford and Beyond” Visual Arts Unit To complement and extend the Year Nine 2006 Waterford Place transition period this Art unit was designed to enable students who would be in the inaugural group to work from and within the space, to examine how the Edmund Rice story connects to their Terrace story. In doing this they would identify and attenpt to describe six places of significance for the Terrace community via a creative response. The six places of significance relate to places that were important to the story of Edmund Rice and to the Terrace story.

In Houses we described six places of significance using aerial maps and then reinterpreted the map into an art work using colour, line and texture. Each House was allocated a place of significance: Barrett, the Cork map; Windsor, the Tennyson map; Treacy, the Spring Hill map’ Kearnet, the Dublin map; Reidy the Brisbane City map and Mahoney, the Waterford map.

Each boy painted a small individual canvas.

All the canvases from one House have been joined together to form a collaborative work to be installed on an internal wall at Waterford Place.

The Gallaghers - Irene and Gerry: Terrace supporters In October Mrs Irene Gallagher wrote to Mr Chapman telling of their connection with Terrace for over seventy years and sending a generous donation in support of Eddies Van. Her husband Gerry was a student at Terrace in 1940-41 and their son, Paul, began school here in 1969 and was Prefect in 1975.

She was a member of the Terrace Ladies Guild from 1969 until 1975 when she was honoured to be its President. Meantine Gerry was working hard with other parents to organise a Parents and Friends Association. This was begun in second term in 1971 with Gerry the interim President. He was then elected President for 1972 and 1973.

The first grandson, Matthew Bint, was here from 1992-1999 and then in 2004 Dominic Gallagher arrived and is now in Year 10.

Melbourne Reunion, 2006 The Terrace Annual Melbourne Dinner was held at the Victorian Club on Friday 27 October. Thirty one Old Boys and guests attended, the best in the last three years.

Br Paul Hannigan (Teacher 1944-49) said Grace and Mr Peter Fullagar, College Dean, represented the Principal, Mr Peter Chapman, who was an early victim of the U2 Concert which caused the GPS Track and Field Meeting to be rescheduled.

Mr Fullagar reports his impression: On Friday evening 27 October I had the privilege and honour to represent the College at the Annual Dinner in Melbourne.

At this ‘outpost’ of Terrace it was wonderful to be able to meet men whose sense of pride in this great school has not been diminished by the ‘tyranny’ of time and distance.

Professor Owen Potter (1938-42) and Mike Owen (1954-62) were both present and also Dr Dom Katter, President of the GTOBA, who proposed the Toast to the Christian Brothers. Kerry McManus (1950-58) proposed the Toast to the College. Mr Peter Fullagar showed slides of current activities at Terrace and his presentation was excellent and very well received. His presence and that of the President of the GTOBA were the highlights of the dinner. The Vote of Thanks to the visitors was moved by Michael Toohey (1959-66) and John Toohey (1960-64) led a stirring rendition of the school song.

Their connections with Terrace ranged from 1940 until 2002 and they were all interested to know of present-day Terrace and excited by what they heard. It was inspiring to sing ‘Terrace to the Fore’ alongside men who still feel such an affinity for the College. The charming presence of Br Paul Hannigan (Teacher 1944-1949) helped to make the occasion particularly memorable. Mr Tom Sweeney’s (1944-46) recitation of classic Australian poetry was a highlight for many present.

Raffle prizes were donated by Mark Monteit (1969-75) and Merv Kiley (1997-1981) while $280 was raised for Eddie’s Van. The Master of Ceremonies was Tony Self (1970-77) who closed the formal proceedings. The Victorian Club closed at midnight, but things were still in full swing at the Irish Times when Terrace stumps were drawn at 2.00am.

Special thanks to Mr Pat Taylor for his work in organising this Reunion. 2008 will mark the tenth anniversary of the Melbourne Reunion (the first was at the Celtic Club in 1998); and another memorable night will be assured for all.

Senator Boswell returns!

It was a happy occasion to welcome back Senator Ron Boswell (GT 1955-56) recently [Above]. He spoke to the Year 7 students about the Senate and how it works in Australia. Later he congratulated Tom Beasley who won the Caltex Award for the Year 7 student who had best maintained the traditions of the College in study, sport and co-curricular activities.

Tom is also the Senator’s grandson [Picture below].

Celebration of Excellence Evening - 2006 The Principal, Mr Peter Chapman, [Right] speaks at the Celebration of Excellence evening in early November. The Terrace community celebrated the success of the two hundred and sixty-two award winners.

A major feature of the evening was the special “Celebration Orchestra” of some eighty players made up of students from the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Senior Strings and the Terrace Big Band.

The Senior and Middle School Singers joined the orchestra for some items. There were also solo pieces with the orchestra

by Aled Humphrys(12W) on piano, Patrick Sweeney (9T) on the violin, Matthew Tunbridge (11K), Nick Tierney (11W), Rory Dawson (11K), Oliver Creagh (8T) and Lachlan Moore (7W).

Special thanks to members of the teaching staff, music staff and support staff who worked behind the scenes in so many ways to make the night such a success.

Thomas Hamilton-Smith (1986-2006) Tom Hamilton-Smith (GT 1996-2003) was a most remarkable young man who contracted cancer when he was eighteen and died in his twentieth year.

He approached his illness in the same quiet way that he approached everything - no complaints and no fuss. He was an outstanding “gentleman of Terrace” as a student and in Year 12 managed to get a place in the Second XI in Cricket and the Third XV in Rugby even though he was not at all well.

He succeeded in getting a place at UQ where he was working in Information Technology. When he died it was as he had always lived - surrounded by parents and family and mates not too far away. He is survived by his parents, John and Jan. May he rest in peace.

The College as the 1976 students knew it Welcome to Terrace as it was in 1976!

[Photo left] Some things look very different to 2006 eyes! Most surprising is that the Water Street end of the College has nothing! No Manual Arts, Art and Graphics buildings. No Basketball Court and no staff car park Some very old houses are where our Science and Music building is now.

The Campbell Centre looks very different.

Mt Sion does not exist and we wonder where the Principal (their “Headmaster”) used to have his Office. The recent additions of the Holy Family Chapel and the GT125 building are still in the architect’s imagination.

It certainly helps 2006 students understand why the 1976 Old Boys pictured below found that while so much had changed the essential things of the spirit of the school - respect for family, solidarity with fellow students in study and sport, respect for God and things spiritual remain as they have always been. And each person at Terrace male or female, old or young is still trying to make sure that at the end he/she will have made a difference.

Staff honoured at boat naming Mr Damian Wright (Director of Rowing) arranged for a number of boats to be christened at a November College Assembly. Four of these were named after current staff members who had shown an active support of students in the Rowing Club and had served the College and the students for many years.

As shown above each of the staff members Mrs Yvonne Carr (Director of Music), Miss Vicki Sargent (Director of Culture), Mrs Julie Quinn (Dean of Studies) and Mr Damien Price (Dean of Mission) said a few words as they named the boat. “I would like to wish all rowers from St Joseph’s, Gregory Terrace Rowing Club good luck, success and fair competition. Bless all who row in this Quad. I have great pleasure in christening this Quad (Yvonne Carr, Vicki Sargent, Julie Quinn, Damien Price).”

Foundation celebrates 20 years

GPS Tennis First IV, 2006

The Foundation was established in 1986 as the capital development arm of the College.

Like many Foundations in large Australian schools and hospitals, the structure chosen was through a company limited by guarantee. The first Chairman of Directors was the late Judge Ned Williams followed

by Liam Walsh and later on by Peter Flynn.

The Board of Directors now comprises Brian Flannery (Chair), Paul Tynan (Deputy), Peter Chapman, Bruce Humphrys, Donna Kent, Fergus Legh, Tom Hackett, Trish Vedelago, Geoff Rodgers, Peter Cornish, Br Ted Walker and Paul Bartley.

At the recent function to celebrate the milestone, Br Luke Quinn, Province Leader, congratulated all those involved in making the Foundation a success over the past two decades. He said the wonderful support is evidenced by the outstanding facilities and resources that our students and staff enjoy.

In 2006 there were a record 19 GPS teams in Basketball and six teams playing in the CIC competition in primary.

Mr Brian Flannery said through the generosity of the Terrace Family over the past two decades, the Foundation has made grants to the College for capital developments including the Chapel and the GT125 Learning Centre, Maroon Outdoor Education development and now at Waterford Place, opening in 2007.

From bequests received, the Foundation has supported the education of Terracians with allowances for student support, purchase of a new Eddies Van for the community outreach program and the World War 2 Honour Board to recognise Old Boy veterans who served in that conflict.

He said, “On behalf of the College, I thank all the contributors, past and current, to the Foundation’s fundraising programs over the last twenty years.”

“Terrace’s finest post-war sprinter” Under15 220 yards.) Brennan completed the Under15 in 11 seconds, walked back to the start, lined up and won the Under14 100! (At that time a competitor could take part in events for which he was under age.)

Later he anchored the Under14 Relay team as he had the year before!”

Steve Brennan (GT 1945-51. Yr4 to Yr10) went through undefeated in five years of GPS Track and Field to notch eleven wins!

Mr J.C. Crowley QC, from Senior 1952 tells the story - and he was there: “On Friday 12 September 1947 a twelveyear old Terrace boy lined up in the GPS Under 14 100 yards sprint - these were premetric days. He won it and his name was Steven Brennan.

He was an unusually built lad. In his early years he was big for his age. He had large powerful thighs and buttocks, but his calves were not so large and his feet were small. He was a natural athlete, untrained and unorthodox. He had short strides, the back lift of his legs was short, but his pace furious. He did not know what it was to train - although training was rather casual in those times anyway.

In 1948 he was again Under 14 and won that 100 yards, but he also won the Under15 100 and 200 yards (there was no 16 The Terracian - December 2006

In 1949 he repeated his Under15 double and he was good enough to move up to win the Under16 220. In 1950 he won the sprint double and he finished a great career in 1951 with wins over the Open 100 and 220 yards.

The College Annual commented, “From Under 13 to Open he was unbeaten in GPS Sprint races and compiled (or helped in Relays to compile) a total of 105 points for the School. Though only in Junior University Class he was appointed Captain of Athletics as a tribute to his service.”

In Steven Brennan’s final GPS Track and Field of 1951 and he was Captain, Terrace were Champions with 92 points, BGS 2nd with 811⁄2, ACGS 3rd with 671⁄2, NC 4th with 62. It is said that Steven Brennan has faithfully attended every GPS Track and Field Day since, but Terrace has not risen to the occasion since!
