College Principal’s Page At the conclusion of the academic year we can look back and say much has been said, done and achieved in the diversity of areas across the life of the College.

To celebrate the energy and many facets of life in a vibrant community of students, staff and parents we gathered at the Brisbane Convention Centre for a Celebration of Excellence Evening in early November in what was an entertaining and memorable event that showcased the talents and excellence that was demonstrated during the year. In particular we congratulated the Dux of the College for 2005 Andrew Hobson, the Proxime Accessit Chau Vu, the many prize winners and all those who provided the excellent standard of music and entertainment that was so very much part of the celebration.

The end of the year also saw the graduation of the Senior Class of 2005. As a group they had an infectious spirit and a strong sense of pride. The end of their secondary schooling represents a significant milestone in their lives; an important crossroad as these young men embark upon a new phase.

The Irish have a custom of burying warm coals in the ashes at night in order to preserve the fire for the cold morning to come. Instead of cleaning out the cold hearth, they preserve the glowing coals under beds of ash overnight in order to have a fast starting fire the next day. Those of us in schools, working with the parents at home, we are keepers of the coals. It is up to our graduands to ensure that they fan these coals into a fire of great warmth and light in their world for the future building of positive relationships. We wish the class of 2005 our best wishes as they begin this next stage of the journey.

Christmas is a special time and to all our families, friends and Old Boys I extend to you this community’s best wishes, thanks and blessings. I pray that our young men, their families and friends may realise the great potential this period of Advent and Christmas offers to us all in this special time.

International Soccer Player

Tom Parry (photo above with wife, Jean, and son, John) attended Terrace in 192627. He was small in stature at school and the Rugby Master in 1926, Br Keenan, told him he was too small to play Rugby - see class photo on right - and that he should find another sport. So he took himself off to the Bardon-Latrobe Soccer Club and whilst there, badly injured his left shin. Gangrene set in, but while he was being prepared for surgery his mother refused to allow the operation to proceed. While his right leg

was healing he practised kicking with his left leg. History now records that he played on the left wing in several tests for Australia.

Tom’s son Rod was cox of the First VIII in 1960. His grandson, Thomas, attended Terrace 1989-1996.

Tom joined the Army during WW2 and served in New Guinea, rising to the rank of Captain. On his return he bagan building houses and small commercial buildings.

In the late 50’s he became President of the Master Builders Association of Queensland.

Two of his grandsons, William (12M) and Bernard (11M) Peverill, are currently at Terrace.

Tom passed away aged 49 in 1962.

Rod Parry (1958-61)

He had three sons and a daughter. All his sons attended Terrace.

His building skills were called on during the construction of the first Terrace rowing shed at New Farm. There were no concrete pumps in those days, so the gravel for concrete boat ramp had to be dumped on the footpath above and literally pushed by the students down a chute made from corrugated iron supported by timber cross arms. Even Br Dillon was impressed! The concrete was then mixed on the only flat area just above the ramp.

Recently discovered Old Boy War Veterans No article in “The Terracian” has had such an effect as the last issue’s “Terracians who served in the forces during WWII” I might just mention one of the many letters: We were grateful to receive an email from a lady whose father and his two brothers attended Terrace and served in WWII. Also an uncle on her mother’s side was in the RAAF and was killed when flying a Typhoon over Europe in WWII. Then by good fortune, two of them were in the one photo, 1933 Sub-Junior. [Photo at right] Thus, after marriage, two Terrace families added four extra veterans to our list of past students who served in World War Two. Many thanks, Mrs Hall, for your letter.

Still friends 70 years since their Terrace days!

The two old gentlemen pictured here, John Creedy and Hermann Barnett, were in the 1924 photo of the SubJunior class which was printed in the June Terracian.

Mr Creedy’s relatives saw the published photo from 1924 and sent along the photo [At right] of the two old friends However, Mr Barnett’s daughter had met and married the brother of the current Archivist at Terrace, Mr Neil Doherty.

So though the two 1924 Old Boys have both died since 2000, their children are still alive and have since then continued their connection with their old school, Gregory Terrace.

I am sure that if you recognise friends or relatives in our historic photos that many others would be interested in what happened in the subsequent years.

Outdoor Education - “Complex Reasoning and Philosophical Thinking.”

It’s Monday morning about 6 o’clock as I sit in my tent. I am surrounded by Spotted Gums, Iron Barks, Casuarinas and variations of greens and greys as far as the eye can see. The peaks of Mt Toowoonan, Mt Ballow and Mt May loom in the outskirts of my vision, covered in mist and moisture from last night’s spectacular thunderstorm.

[Photo 1 and Photo 2] They are nearing the end of their “solos” and their blue and orange nylon homes can be seen dotted amongst the forest in the valleys and on the ridges around me.

They have had no TV, phones, Internet or even any dialogue with anyone for the last 24 hours. As Immersion 2005 draws to a close I reflect upon what these young men have achieved in a brief, but intense, few weeks that have gone by.

They have reflected on and constructed a personal philosophy that deals with some complex issues; they have had an extraordinary interaction with a group of people with disabilities from Gold Coast Rec and Sport [Photo 3], and provided an excellent inclusive program; they have journeyed down the mighty Nymboida River, through pristine forests and churning water with all their gear in their canoe [Photo 5] , working together to form a tight-knit community of well drilled water rats. At the conclusion of each day they have sat around the fire discussing and solving the problems of the world [Photo 4], and falling asleep under the stars.

One of the carers at Gold Coast Rec and Sport commented that watching the Terrace students restored his faith in the youth of today (no small feat). Likewise I find it hard not to be optimistic about the future after spending the last few weeks with the immersion crew. Our parents should be very proud of their sons.

We see Patrick Forrest (9K) with companions in the rainforest behind him preparing to do some tape measuring and recording what they discovered.

They were studying how different climatic conditions affect the rainforest. They measured the girth of trees and leaf sizes.

Time was spent at Terrace before they went to O’Reilly’s gaining background information that was necessary for understanding things they would find and measure in their Exploration.

Malta, the George Cross Island and Gregory Terrace Malta is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and became British in 1814. It strongly supported Britain in World War 2, despite almost daily bombing by the German and Italian Air Forces.

Because it was such a vital communications centre many Allied pilots flew from Malta to defend it. Such was the bravery displayed by the Maltese Britain presented the George Cross to the whole island - and it was known as The George Cross Island.

It became independent in 1964 and later a Republic. It joined the European Union in 2004. The area of the islands is 316 sq km (Brisbane City has 1,360 sq km), the population in 2005 is 400,000 of whom 98% is Catholic (Brisbane City has 1.6 million people).

Gregory Terrace and Nudgee in Malta

Over the weekend of 24/25 September 2005, Malta played host to an international airshow and the 60th celebration of WW2. It was also the opportunity for a meeting between the Australian High Commissioner Richard Palk (GT 1961-1968) and Martin Kerby (Teacher at Nudgee College) and the author of Where Glory Awaits.

A number of Old Boys from both Colleges served with distinction during WW2, notably Paul Brennan DFC DFM (NC 1930), Ted Beard (an Old Boy from both Colleges) and Brian Sherry (GT 1936).

Richard Palk joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1994 after a seventeen-year career as a Regular Army officer with the Australian Defence Corps. As a Lieutenant Colonel he held senior Defence and Public Affairs positions in Sydney and overseas.

In 1992 and 1993 he was Chief of Military Public Information on the Headquarters of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He served in Bangkok from 1995 to 1999 as Consul General and Counsellor. From 1999 to 2002 he served in Kuala Lumpur also as Consul General and Counsellor.

He was born in Brisbane in 1950 and holds a Bachelor of Arts from UQ. In the Australia Day Honours List in 1994 he was awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal (CSM) for his service in Cambodia. He is married and he and his wife, Helen, have two adult daughters.

Twenty-two intrepid voyagers about to set off for Paris leaving the security of the Brisbane they know so well!

As students of French they will benefit enormously from this trip: they will be immersed in a French language milieu.

Terrace Students meet Brother Bill Tynan

Brother Bill Tynan at one time was Headmaster of St James College quite close to Terrace. For some years now he has been working with the village people in a group of villages some 40 kms from Dili and some hours

by LandRover! The Brothers and volunteers plus local people strive to improve health, education and general well-being of the local people - as did Brother Rice in his way, two hundred years ago.

Furniture from the forest - Year Ten immersion, 1 2005 A great experience!

This was a very interesting immersion of city students into the world of the State Forest workers over the four days of their “camp-out”. They saw hoop pine forest management working, saw why a density of 700-749 trees per hectare is desired and how the trees are finally used in State Forests.

They visited the Beerburrum Seed Nursery and saw how carefully flowers are pollinated and cones are later collected and seeds harvested.

They also saw the end product at the Beerburrum Exotic Pine Plantation and marvelled at the equipment used to harvest the trees. They were also shown management procedures like spraying, thinning and maintaining fire trails and access roads.

Over these first four days they also visited artisans who work with wood. At Maleny they visited the David Linton Workshop. At Cooroy they visited Ross Annel’s workshop and exhibition. Here they were amazed at the quality and variety that was produced, but the tools used here were the same ones available in the Terrace workshop!

At Gympie they toured the Woodworks Timber Museum.

After their visit to the Caboolture Saw Mill they discussed some of the reasons for its excellent safety record.

During four days they saw where the timber comes from and the methods, styles and ideas of the artisans they saw in action - now came their turn!

They had the Friday of their return to Terrace to assemble in the Graphics Room and draw up plans for their article of choice.

In their Project Book they had several pages of plain, graph and isometric grid paper for drawing up ideas and pictorial drawing of their project.

After they had produced workshop drawings for their item they were able to commence working the timber from 29 August until 6 September. Their projects were to be stained and polished and displayed to parents and others on the final day!

GT Race Day, 2005 The race Day was held at Doomben on 1 October and, like the Golf Day, the weather was magnificent. As this meeting was in conjunction with important “Group” races down South, there was a Spring atmosphere throughout the perfect setting in the Chief De Beers Room. William Douglas did a fine job by setting up a platform for a Spring Vitanza Cup for future years. We are assured of this by the fact that every sponsor has agreed to continue their support for next year’s meeting.

GTOBA Golf Day

The Golf Day was played on a magnificent day at Royal Queensland. With the course improvements taking shape players had to negotiate not just the tricky course, the unpredictable wind, clear skies and beautiful sunlight, but also the temporary layout.

There were a few confused groups, but at the end of the day a most enjoyable day was had by all who played.

I would also like to thank our sponsors: Stephen MacDermott (Glencairn MacDermott), Julie-Anne Miller (Property Solutions), Michael Stephens (QED Enterprises), Neil Holt (Wesley Corporate Health) and William Douglas (Ord Minnett). The group led by Florence Jones was last off the course, but most importantly, first on the day.The group led by Michael Stephens took out the GTOBA Cup. Congratulations to this group of four ladies and gentlemen.

Mrs Patricia Macuga (GT Staff 1987-92) whose three sons attended Terrace.

Sr Judith Thompson, RSJ - daughter of Richard (GT 1896-1901) - brother of Evan (GT1932-36) Mr Paul Roach (1948-54) died in November.

Mr Kevin Joyce (1928-31) died in September.

Year Eleven semi formal 1

On Monday evening of October 3 the Year 11 students enjoyed their Semi Formal at “Fridays” in such a way that they, their partners and the staff present had a very pleasant evening.

The ladies of the Terrace Ladies Group helped to prepare the young men in advance with Etiquette Classes. Many thanks also go to Ms Jane Carr and Mrs Kathy Wilson from the Office for the way they organised the event for the students.

Many thanks, too, to Mrs Melina Puglisi, Mrs Jane Manicaros and Mrs Margaret Costello who organised a dinner for very appreciative Year 11 parents whose sons were at the Semi Formal.

Brother Rice Day

On this day we celebrated in a wholeschool Mass the gift to us all of our Founder, Brother Edmund Rice. The gift is of hope and the direction that comes with the support and power of effective communities.

As part of the liturgy, Nicholas Nielsen (10W), a visually impaired student, spoke of the power and importance of this community and how it has assisted him to make obstacle challenges,. Thank you, Nicholas, for sharing your story with us.

The celebrants were Fr Jim Bishop, Fr Ivan Hernon (Chief Celebrant), Fr Gerry Dore, and Fr Ray Brain. [Above] Fr Hernon’s brother, Br Denis, also an Old Boy, was with them in the photo.

A Terracian in the spotlight....

Leon Cain (Senior 2001) has just appeared in the Queensland Theatre Company’s production of ‘Oedipus The King’ at the QPCA Playhouse alongside actor Marcus Graham.

The review of the show in The Courier Mail on 17 October 2005 acknowledged Leon as a young USQ graduate (who) excelled with his sure grasp of the material and described him as ‘a find for the Queensland Theatre Company’.

Whilst at Terrace Leon was in the cast of a number of Terrace/All Hallows’ productions and a member of the Terrace team who became the Qld Youth Theatresports Champions in 2001. He was also the Treacy Cultural Captain in 2001. Earlier this year Leon toured primary schools in south-east Queensland with the Qld Arts Council.

In May 2006 Leon will appear in Michael Gow’s modern Australian tale, ‘Away’, at the Cremorne Theatre, QPCA. We wish Leon well and look forward to seeing him in many more productions in the future.

Waterford and Edmund Rice (Extracts from Brother Larkin’s address to GT staff, students and friends, 1.11.2005) The Terrace badge flies proudly from the former RACQ building in Water Street announcing Waterford Place as an exciting initiative in our 130-year history. By doing so we have honoured Blessed Edmund Rice.

[Photo at right] At the age of fifteen, Edmund left his home in Callan in the south of Ireland to live and work with his uncle Michael at the nearby port of Waterford. (The time we speak of is soon after Captain James Cook had chartered the east coast of the great southern land.)

Soon after, Edmund had taken over the thriving export business on the docks. Here at Waterford he met and married his wife, Mary, and rejoiced at his wife’s pregnancy. Here in Waterford, too, he experienced the despair associated with the death of his wife and the handicap of his daughter. He prayed in the parish church of Ballybricken for guidance.

His business skills had contributed to Waterford becoming a very busy European port, second only to Hamburg. In Waterford he had made his fortune and yet he was able to leave this business to teach poor boys, firstly in a New Street stable and then in a larger school building he had built outside the stone walls of the city of Waterford where the poor lived.

During his forty years of educational endeavour in Waterford the city had troubed times with the population decreasing from 44,000 to 23,000, but Edmund and his men and the poor stayed..........

Without doubt, the motivating forces in Edmund’s life were Christ and his Mother Mary. Evidence abounds that he was a man of prayer. His decision to build his schools was not only because he considered education to be one of the greatest of the social works, but also because he wanted to introduce the children of Waterford to the treasures of the Bible, the life of Christ, the Mass, the sacramental life, the example of the apostles and the saints, Mary’s preeminent position, Catholic social justice and much more.

The fourteenth successor of Brother Rice, Br Paul Pinto from India, wrote recently, “You

are not to imitate the past, but to move into a future that will be different.” And isn’t that just what you are doing here at Terrace.

Problems abounded in Edmund’s life and they will abound in this exciting Waterford Place project..........

I am well satisfied that Waterford Place will provide the students with many things as part of this great educational enterprise.

Congratulations on the innovative project. May almighty God, Mary and Blessed Edmund be with you during the refurbishment period. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

GPS Gymnastics, 2005 Six of the nine GPS schools competed in the GPS Gymnastics for 2005. Those competing were ACGS, BBC, BGS, GT, NC and TSS. The competition was held at The Southport School.

Our congratulations go to BGS which took out Division 3, Division 2 and the Aggregate Cup. Churchie won Division 1.

Queensland Secondary Schools Tennis Champions, 2005 State Championships

These students won the Queensland Secondary Schools Teams Tennis Final in Rockhampton in early September.

The State Titles were held at Victoria Park Tennis Complex, Rockhampton with state, private and independent secondary schools participating.

St Joseph’s College , 3-27, defeated Brisbane Boys’ College, Toowong, 3-26.

The overall winning girls school was Emmaus College, Rockhampton.
