he third term commenced for me with three valuable weeks of Study Leave which provided me with a range of opportunities for interaction, information gathering and reflection on what we are doing at Terrace and how our planning for GT130 is progressing. I have had the chance to meet with a wide cross section of people engaged in boys’ education, to visit some English boys’ schools, to meet up with some Terrace Old Boys in London and to have worthwhile meetings with some Heads of schools to share initiatives and strategies involved with common issues. Being able to see some of our Terrace Rowers do so well at the Royal Henley Regatta as well as seeing a performance of “Cymbeline” at the New Globe Shakespearean Theatre were additional highlights.

The 8th International Coalition of Boys’ Schools Conference: The Conference was held at Dulwich College in London. Dulwich College was founded in 1619 and has grown to a school of some 1400 boys aged thirteen to eighteen. The Conference this year was developed around some familiar themes: (i) The development of boys through co-curricular activities. (ii) How do boys learn and how should we teach them? (iii) How do we assist boys in their personal development?

There were about two hundred and eighty delegates with the United States having probably the greatest representation. Four Australian Edmund Rice Schools were represented with about twenty Australians in all. The greatest encouragement for me was to focus on the freedom we have in the curriculum and assessment routines in Queensland. So many overseas colleagues and students labour under over-testing

regimes where weekly tests and public exams are the driving forces to what is taught. The University/College entry requirements and the publicity for schools to get their students into the ‘prestige’ Universities is a burden we have much less than they.

Downside Abbey and our Internationality Programmes: Downside Abbey School is a Benedictine Day and Boarding school just outside of Bath. The Benedictine Community of St Gregory the Great, now at Downside, has

been running a school since at least 1604 as the major element in the work of the monks. The school has an outstanding tradition for academic excellence. The Music Programme at Downside is exceptional. As a consequence of our arrangements with Downside we are expecting to be able to exchange students and staff in the future. One very tangible outcome is the likelihood that next year’s Music Tour will be hosted by Downside School.During the last month the College has hosted two groups of students from our Brother School, Konan High School in Kobe, Japan. The visitors have engaged enthusiastically in the life of the College including the co-curricular programme and some time at our Outdoor Education Centre at Maroon. In addition, our two Chaminade scholars Phil Beaver and Chris Jardim who were successful in winning the year eleven Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Scholarship to spend six weeks in St Louis, are currently enjoying their exchange.

Each of our three exchange schools are proving to be valuable partners in the mutual development of our learning programmes.

Learning Innovations at Terrace: Over the last couple of years we have been reviewing the mission of the middle years of schooling at Terrace and I wanted to share with you the Mission Statement for those central years, typically from year seven through to year ten.

“Learning at Terrace will take place in a challenging educational community in which all members are encouraged to enjoy learning, respect each other and love life.

At Terrace, students will be encouraged to develop an appreciation of Christian values. They will be challenged to develop the personal and intellectual skills and strategies for service to, and leadership of, a constantly changing society.

Academic rigour will be fundamental in all learning, underpinned by a secure, supportive environment that will enable students to develop into life-long learners.

Members of the School community will develop an awareness of, and a respect for, social economic and cultural differences while developing an understanding of national and international issues.”

During the final three weeks of this term, our year ten students are piloting a range of learning experiences. Each student has negotiated a place in one of the following: v Religious Education Service Unit with various community organizations and utilising the Terrace Coffee Van v International Experience in Japan v Urban Assault Project at The Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm v Enterprise Education at Queensland University of Technology - Gardens Point v Outdoor Education at Maroon Dam v Geology Eco Tourism in Western Queensland v Work Immersion at businesses and TAFE College - in the City The review of these programmes will provide us with valuable data as we plan the further implementation of our curriculum strategies.

A FAMOUS TERRACIAN RACE-CALLER

T

hey told stories about his eternally smouldering pipe and his poor driving but everyone who attended the remembrance service to Keith Noud at Doomben yesterday paid tribute to him. (Courier-Mail 27.6.01) In the September 1998 issue of The Terracian there was an article on Keith Noud as a Terracian author because of his books Keith Noud Recalls (1986) and Horses for Courses (1989). In the books he tells the story of the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club (BATC) in his own inimitable style.

One of the first pieces of history a visitor to the Archives sees is the red and black blazer Keith Noud wore at Terrace. It is in excellent condition and though seventy years old could be worn today except it has the pre-1950 school badge on the pocket. Keith was the ABC’s chief Race Caller for 28 years and then worked with 4BK for 17 years. For 17 years he was also turf editor for the Brisbane Telegraph. He was later Public Relations Officer The cover of one of Keith for the BATC. Keith was 88 when he died and was a loved and respected provider of oral history during so many Noud’s books. He is pictured with his famous pipe. years as a race caller and a journalist in Brisbane.

He was a tireless fund-raiser for charity, particularly Mt Olivet Hospital and in 1975 was awarded an MBE fdor his contribution to sport and charity. He was estimated to have called more than 45,000 races starting in the pioneering days of the mid-1930s.

Raoul Mellish

W

hen the Queensland Art Gallery left its old Gregory Terrace building on the start to its move to its present prestigious surroundings at the Queensland Cultural Centre GT past student Raoul Mellish, as the Director was in charge.

For the eighteen years he was with the Gallery he was too busy to paint for his own pleasure, but after he retired in 1986 he was able to indulge his passion.

His first One Man Show was in 1990 and came after he and his wife Constance spent a three-month holiday in the south of France.

His third solo exhibition was at Cintra House Galleries, Milton, and featured a collection of Australian and French landscapes. Some of the forty magnificent scenes included scenes from the Great Ocean Road in Victoria and rock pinnacles off Lennox Head.

“I used wander around Yeronga as a kid always deeply moved by the effects of nature....The painting came later in life better now than never.”

For more than 40 years the WARREN brothers (from left, Jim, Merv and Bill) celebrated birthdays over lunch at the Tattersall’s Club. All were born in Toowoomba, the sons of Mr and Mrs Henry Warren.

Jim was educated at Christian Brothers’ College, Toowoomba, After a long business career he is now back in Toowoomba and at 90 is recovering from a stroke.

Merv was at Terrace from 1929 to 1931 (where he was with Keith Noud for some time - see above), became a journalist and was a war correspondent with General MacArthur’s Headquarters for the evening papers of Australia, the London Daily Mail and the American United Press from 1942 to 1945.

Bill was at Terrace from 1939-1935 and while in Junior was Captain of the First XV - Cyril Wilkinson was another member of that same team.

erv wrote books about retirement, travel and his war service. These were reviewed in the March 1998 Terracian, p5. Now 87, he and his wife, Norma, live at the Gold Coast.

Merv’s son, Kerry, was at Terrace for nine years until 1965, became a solicitor and was in PNG for two years with the legal firm of Warner Shand (also a Terrace old boy) at Rabaul. (In Rabaul by a coincidence the Editor asked Warner Shand to be a member of the Governing Council of the Catholic Vunakanau Teacher’s College when he was Principal there during the 1970s)

Bill enlisted in the RAAF in World War II, trained in Canada and served as a navigator in Sunderlands in England, becoming a navigator instructor. When Wimbledon was opened during the war in aid of the Red Cross, Bill was in the Australian team that beat teams from England, America and Norway at tennis. Bill won the all-services singles title at Wimbledon. After his career in business, Bill at 83 lives at Caloundra with his wife Hilda.

Their three sons, Graeme, Brian and Tony were all educated at Terrace and are in business in Brisbane.

The GT125 project which has recently been presented with a construction award by the Queensland Master Builders’ Association is being funded with the generosity of the Terrace family through the Gergory Terrace Foundation.

To date the Foundation has granted $1.15 million towards the cost of this significant project which has provided additional learning resources and the 220seat Chapel. These fully air-conditioned facilities will magnify over time the spiritual and educational benefits for our students.

his photo, taken in late 1975 shows a workman, left, putting finishing touches to the Centenary building.

Other points to notice are Terrace staff cars parked in Billet Street. The gradual grade down Billet Street was turned into steps - more or less where they are now - and a lot of soil was brought in for planting trees to beautify the area.

The middle of the picture shows the concrete flagstones making the pathway across to the 1964 Senior School. Past that at bottom right can be seen the steps leading down to what is now the pool area. The “arena” used for meetings/assemblies can be clearly seen. This later became the stairways going down to the pool and the Campbell Centre.

The photo left below shows how the soil was placed below the “White House” on the right and the “Green House” on the left and small trees are already making a start. The other photo right below shows the same scene after another year of growth - the “Green House” was burned down in October 1976. In 1995 the Toilet was built into the left end of this bank.

y August 1987 the growth on the bank was satisfying the most “picky” and the lower quadrangle outside the staff room was becoming an attractive area despite the fact that the toilets were obviously now in the “wrong” place.

This photo shows the steps going up to the old car park - just beside the pillar of the 1964 Senior School. In the GT120 Building Programme the toilets were relocated into the hill behind the white fence. Another major change was the building of the overhead walkways which joined the old Primary building to the Senior School. Then in 2001 the new Chapel and the GT125 building were opened on Gregory Terrace.

nother pleasant way of doing Maths these days is by means of a “Maths Trail”. Here the various Maths problems are set up in various places round the school and the students in their groups move from one to the next until they have answered each of the questions.

Members of the group are allowed to help one another.

CHRISTIAN IS TALKING

I

n 1999, Christian and his mother Mrs Jean Rance first visited Terrace. He attends St Gabriel’s Early Intervention Centre for deaf children situated on premises owned by St Laurence’s College Old Boys, South Brisbane. A Brother, Ambrose Tottenham, has the task of trying to raise funds for the Centre which offers its expert programme free of charge, but receives no government support.

This is one of those occasions when the students really SEE which children are going to be helped by their donations and they were amazed what this completely deaf 5-year old could hear through his cochlear implant and then say. His implant can be seen clearly above left.

2001 STUDIES TOUR

errace has a vigorous policy of reaching out to other schools both in Australia and throughout the world. In July we hosted visitors from Xavier College and St Kevin’s College in Melbourne for some days and welcomed students from Brisbane State High School, All Hallows’ School and Mt Alvernia College. This “Focus Day” was held at the Terrace Pavilion at Tennyson.

There were five sessions led by the following staff members: Mr Greg Smith, Terrace, Mutual Obgation; Br Frank McCarthy, St Kevin’s, Genetics, Issues and Ethics; Kirsty Street and Ms J. Jell, BSHS, Logic; Mrs Margaret Howse, Xavier College, Leadership, Rules and the Importance of Law and Order; and Ms Jenny Marshall, All Hallows’ School, What is Intelligence? A Concept Game. These leaders then led group discussions.

Staff were glad of the assistance provided by TLG members at Tennyson also.

Terrace, Xavier and St Kevin’s hosted a Colloquium on Wednesday on the theme of Relationships. There were two speakers for each topic from each school and then discussions and responses followed. Teachers commented on the high quality of the papers presented in the Colloquium and on the maturity of comments evident in the Philosophy Day at Tennyson.

St Kevin’s and Xavier students were billeted by Terrace families now a tradition each year. The whole event was planned and run by Mr Smith who was thanked by the participants for the thoroughness of all that was done.

Christian, as he amazes them by answering his mother’s questions and even went so far as to sing the boys a simple “kindy” song The boys know that what they collect will help Christian and the other children at St Gabriel’s learn to use hearing aids and cochlear implants to listen and to talk.

ADDRESSING ISSUES IN BOYS’ LITERACY

A

s educators of the current generation of boys in schools today, we face many challenges and yet at the same time have many opportunities. Finding solutions to the problems the boys are facing in schools is no easy task. Literacy is one of the key areas of concern and we are attempting to address this.

Our initiatives during 2001 have included author visits and a father-son reading evening to encourage fathers’ active participation in their sons’ reading.

The author visits provided an opportunity for students to interact with successful male authors. Three authors have made presentations to students. They include Marcus Zusak, Simon Higgins and Jonathan Harlen. Markus Zusak is a young author who can easily identify the interests of boys and use this to develop in students strategies for developing writing skills. Markus’ second published novel “Fighting Ruben Wolf” is nominated for the 2001 CBC Book The Library staff meet to discuss their next moves in promoting reading of the Year. Pamela Goffinet was absent. gust and Jonathan Harlen presented to students in Years 5, 6, 7 and 9. These authors have created a great deal of enthusiasm for reading and writing.

An evening of reading for fathers and sons was held on August 20 to celebrate and support the role of fathers. Research suggests that fathers are the main role models for reading in the lives of boys. Students who lack experiences in reading from an early age are at risk of failure in the literary race. Reading to boys on a daily basis is an investment in their success in learning to read and in their future literacy. Stories also play a major role in our understanding of the world around us. The evening included not only time for quiet reading and sharing of favourite books and authors, but also activities related to the short-listed books of 2001, internet games, father-son newsreader competition and many other competitions.

ARCHIVES OPENING

T

he College Archives were opened in the present location on 20 February, 1994. Dr McManus presided and welcomed the representative group of Terrace supporters including past Principals of Terrace, visiting Christian Brothers, Old Boys representatives and Parents and Friends. The occasion began in the newly refurbished Founder’s Room.

Dr McManus reminded the visitors that the Founder’s Room was for many years a classroom for Terrace students and that Br J. S. Campbell, OBE, (RIP) a legend in Terrace history, was one of the two Brothers who lived in cubicles at the Gregory Terrace end of the room.

The late Emeritus Professor James Mahoney was asked to address the gathering and open the new Archives. He informed those present that he had studied for Senior in 1924 in the very room in which he was speaking! The Sub-Seniors were taught in the same room. He finished by presenting back to the College two of the books he had won in 1924 - for Christian Doctrine and for Dux of the School.

I

n 1955 in Retrospect in the 1955 Year Book we read: “July 7th: Three newly ordained Terraceites visit us together with the Terrace Seminary group; for the visitors an augmented Morning Tea, for the hopeful students a free afternoon.”

These were the days before the Second Vatican Council when Catholics were sure of what they believed and vocations were a constant reminder to everyone that the school was doing things properly and that all was well in the Church.

Dr McManus then introduced Br Barry Buckley who was College Principal for eight years in one period - longer than any other single period for a Princial in Terrace history. He congratulated the Old Boys in establishing the Archives in this new venue; and he congratulated ex-Terracian Br Brian Steele for his work in designing and equipping the Archives and for collecting valuable documents and historical data for posterity. He was also glad that Br Wallis from the Nudgee Archives and ex-Terracian Br Ansell from the Province Archives were able to attend.

Another visitor was Br O.S. Adams, AM, (RIP) who was on the staff in 1930 and was Headmaster 1853-1958.

The writer of this summary was Br J.G. Hodda (RIP). He was also a past staff member and a past Principal (1972) of Terrace.

This old photo shows fifty of the younger students with two Brothers and, presumably, a lay assistant. The back of the photo is dated 1894-1901. It shows what we now call College Hall. The boys are wearing knickerbockers, big boots and some have Eton collars and boaters.

I

f the photo was 1897 we have some information: that year there were four Brothers from Terrace at St James plus five assistants to teach the 383 pupils. We read: Every boy that presents himself is admitted.

Many families could not pay fees.

At Terrace there were 146 boys with three Brothers and three assistants. Because Terrace had to support St James’ (with no “state aid”) there was the added comment: Non-paying pupils are admitted only in very exceptional cases at the Terrace.

THE COLLEGE FROM THE NEW LANDBRIDGE

This view of the buildings facing Gregory Terrace shows them as they are seen from the Landbridge already completed as part of the new roadway system beside the railway in Spring Hill. The very old Tuck Shop area is seen among the trees at the far left, then the original building from 1876 and then the addition opened at part of GT125: the Chapel in the middle and the GT125 Learning Centre. At the far end of the building can be seen the viewing areas of the Roof Top Seminar Centre.

Nearest the camera is the fence of the Landbridge above the railway lines; next towards the College is the first pair of the Tennis Courts.

24 HOUR VIGIL FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

D

uring the week set aside by the Churches for National Unity and Reconciliation Week it was decided to set aside 24 hours for a Prayer Vigil for that purpose. An invitation was sent to other schools in the Archdiocese and to Terrace parents that they might like to join us between 7 am Friday and 7 am Saturday.

Archbishop Bathersby was pleased with his invitation, sent his support and encouragement, but regretted that he would not be in Brisbane at the time.

We were all pleased at the success of the Vigil. Several times throughout the day the Chapel was filled to capacity with representatives from schools as diverse as Nudgee College, Mt St Michael’s College, St James’ College and Carmel College - who spent time praying as one.

Responses from students, teachers and parents were positive. Many were touched by the prayerful stillness as well as the communal prayer. Having so many adolescents pray aloud together is a powerful sign. But having so many praying for fifteen to twenty minutes at a time in absolute silence was even more powerful. There was no doubt that something wonderful was happening.

We have been encouraged to hold another Vigil next year. All who attended seemed grateful to take the advice of Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” One of the organisers said that the most surprising discovery for the group was not how adolescents took to the experience. People who work daily with adolescents know that they are deeply spiritual, even if many are spiritually inarticulate at their time in life. The most surprising discovery was that there are many adults who have “family wounds” from being, for example, married at the back of the church because one partner was not a Catholic. Likewise a number spoke how one of their parents was never really accepted by one side of their family because they were/were not Catholic.

These people assumed that the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and Reconciliation was for people like them. No doubt it was!

Mrs Debbie Johnson (Mark 12B andMatthew 7B) was asked by the Terrace Ladies Group to organise flowers for the Holy Family Chapel. This was to make sure flowers were always there and that “special” occasions were catered for. Many thanks for that!

They had attended a Tuesday morning Mass in the Holy Family Chapel to which Donors had been invited.

avid Tuffield was visiting Australia from England where he has lived since soon after his graduation. He has been receiving the Terracian for some years and had written after the March 1999 issue which had included a copy of the 1951 Seniors’ signatures: I noticed my signature (now somewhat changed) in the lower half of the document.

I recognised so many of the names that it brought back many memories.”

He wrote this year, “Our trip to Brisbane is in June. We have a few days there before we fly to Melbourne, then drive back by car via Canberra and Armidale where I visit my best friend from GT days retired professor of marine biology, David Woodland.”

David was really delighted when he saw the new Chapel. By a coincidence his visit came on the day when many students prayed for the welfare of seriously injured Nick Hanly who was taken to hospital after playing in the Second XV at Tennyson. David was impressed by the earnestness of the students. And also from the fact that one of those attending Mass in support of Nick’s family was a classmate from his time at Terrace, Neil MacGroarty. They soon recognised each other though they hadn’t met since Uni days!

tudents in French classes from Year 6 to Year 12 were involved in the recent French Day together with teachers, parent helpers, Old Boys and native French speakers. Students undertook a variety of immersion activities, ranging from showing their passports to Customs Officers, obtaining money from the bank, booking a hotel, buying a train ticket and enjoying a patisserie and a drink in the Café.

The “French Town” operated from Period 1 to Period 6.

Parents used to a much less practical approach to French will be pleased to learn that the modern way to French is much more “hands-on” than it was in the “good old days”!

“I recently read Bryce Courtenay’s moving biography, April Fool’s Day, of his son Damien who passed away. In that book Bryce senses his son’s presence every time he goes to his favourite places. Mum is with us today because every time I come to Tennyson I feel her presence as much as I feel the warmth of the sun and the breeze on my face. As Brother Rodgers so generously stated, Ruby Doyle was the soul of the place. One can see her standing here ticking off the Coca-Cola man about a late delivery.

“Mum, Grandma, Aunty Ruby, Rube, Mrs Doyle - in whatever guise you knew her, she was a very special person.......

“She had three particular favourites who became v e r y special friends: Mr Michael Broad Terry, Geoff and Quentin Doyle.

“I thank Terrace for so significantly acknowledging her contribution which to her was principally a labour of love. I would also like to acknowledge that Terrace was as good for Mum as she was for Terrace.

By a coincidence, the final game for Terrace this year was against Ipswich Grammar.

This was appropriate as the very first time Tennyson was used in June 1964 was to play nine under-age teams from Ipswich Grammar.

And this completed GT125. The school in its 126th year had a 200-seat stand-alone Chapel, a 200-seat lecture theatre and an excellent Sports Centre completed at Tennyson.

he Konan High School Rugby team played a number of matches against Brisbane and Sunshine Coast teams during the last week of July. It included the game above which was played on the Sunday. The team was replying to our visit to Japan and Konan High in Kobe last year. Many thanks to those Terrace families who looked after billets.

Three host families of Terrace parents and students took their seven billets to an Italian trattoria in the Valley where they found the Japanese students absolutely love Italian food - and it was very expensive for them in Japan.

GTOBA ANNUAL DINNER, 2001

SOME OF THOSE AT THE GTOBA DINNER

The Gregory Terrace Old Boys’Association once again held its Annual Dinner at Tattersall’s Club. The 140 attendees were entertained by Old Boy Ralph Devlin and the “Tatty Tenors” with some entertaining help from Geoff Lowes and his facial expressions.

Recognition was made to Phil Beaver and Chris Jardim, the two Year 11 students who were chosen to attend Chaminade College in USA. This trip, as in past years, was funded by the Old Boys’Assiciation with some help from Rotary.

As is the custom the roll call for each year was done and a standing ovation was given to the oldest Old Boy present, Mr Len Lather, a Senior of 1938.

A signed Queensland Reds Jersey, kindly donated by the Bank of Queensland, was auctioned by the Master of Ceremonies, Rod Tiley, who compered the evening admirably.
