A

s part of our internationality programme Terrace has exchange arrangements in place with three overseas schools. Konan Boys’ High School is in Kobe Japan, Chaminade in St Louis and Downside Abbey in Bath, England. In recent years members of staff and students have exchanged with these schools in programmes, which are of great mutual advantage. Last month Mr Mark Stower, who as College Dean is responsible for our International programmes, and I spent some time at Konan Boys’ High School in Kobe renewing our exchange agreement and acquaintances with the senior leadership of the school. This year two parties of Terrace students from Years Seven and Nine will be at Konan and we will receive staff and students here in August. These exchange programmes enhance the importance of our students continuing to understand the concept of internationality and belonging to a worldwide community.

Our joint production this year with All Hallows School was Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953.

He used the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692 to show why it is imperative that a person not allow their name to be used to hurt others. The context of the play still holds relevance today where trial by media and public inquiries are a fact of life. The production saw a number of Terrace students working with students from All Hallows’ School and a committed group of staff. There were forty-six students involved in the cast and fifty-five in the various crews. The production was staged at The Gardens Point Theatre at QUT and was extremely well received.

During the first week of June we celebrated two hundred years of Edmund Rice education, which began when the first Christian Brothers’ school was opened on 1 June 1802. A celebration Mass was held at Nudgee College and this was supported by the attendance of Christian Brothers from all over Queensland and by large numbers from the communities of the local Christian Brothers schools within the Province.

On the evening prior to this Terrace held a special celebration Mass in the Chapel of the Holy Family to farewell the Brothers’ community of Gregory Terrace who will no longer reside in the Brothers’ House. The evening included tours of the Brothers’ House and a light supper.

Many Old Boys and past families were in attendance to farewell and to thank the Brothers for the great role they have played in perpetuating the charism of Edmund. The Brothers’ House will now be formally known as The Treacy Centre in honour of Br Patrick Ambrose Treacy who brought the Brothers to Queensland. Br Treacy passed away in The Brothers’ House in October1912 aged 78.

On 30 April a first gathering of the Gregory Terrace Board was held. The occasion was more of a social meeting than a formal one and an opportunity for Board members to get to know something of their fellow members. The Inaugural Board Members appointed by the Province of the Christian Brothers are: Mr Lester White (Chair) - a past parent, Lester is a banker by profession.

Mr Barry O’Callaghan - an Old Boy, past parent and past President of the GTOBA. Barry is a lawyer by profession.

Mr Mark O’Shea - an Old Boy and current parent of two students. Mark is the Chair of the College Finance Committee and an Accountant by profession.

Professor Alan Rix – a past parent of two students. Alan is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Queensland.

Dr Anne Winkle – a parent of one past student and one current. Anne is the sister of Fr Frank Brennan, our Consultant-in-Residence in 1999, and is a practising psychiatrist by profession.

Mrs Helen Mahoney – mother of two current students and past President of the Terrace Ladies Group. Helen’s husband is Dr Peter Mahoney a nephew of the late Professor James Mahoney, our first Rhodes Scholar.

A TERRACIAN JOINS THE DE LA SALLE BROTHERS

I

n the middle of April word came that Br Albert, FSC, had passed away at the Brothers’ House at Scarborough. In 1950-51 he did Sub-Junior and Junior at Gregory Terrace as Lyle Venables. When he was 38 he changed his lifestyle and entered the De la Salle Brothers.

Lyle was the second of four brothers who all attended Terrace between 1948 and 1970 - Ian (47-48), Lyle, Barry (1954-1955) and Dale (1966-1970). Ian’s son, James, finished Senior at Terrace in 1980. Their mother, Barbara, attended the funeral even though she was in her nineties. A valiant woman, surrounded by her remaining sons and extended family members.

After he left school he followed his Dad into signwriting. He was interested in sport, especially rugby league and cricket as well as sailing. He later became a labour and national service vocation officer. Then he joined the de la Salle Brothers in 1966 and worked in eight places in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Papua New Guinea, showing a special interest in students and their welfare. He also had a great love of art and enjoyed especially his time at Mentone where he ran the Art Department very well.

He worked at Boys’ Town in 1971 and then at Boys Town Link Up from 1995 until 2000 where he worked in the Prison Team. His extremely dry sense of humour made his fellow staff members laugh in difficult times. He always had time for other staff members and for the prisoners. His fellowship with staff helped many. May he rest in peace.

REVISITING 1982 - TWENTY YEARS OF HISTORY AGO

any people who were here in 1982 have various reasons to remember it. The Rowers will never forget 1982! They had a row to the Gold Coast just before Christmas which attracted a great deal of media attention, then a trip to rowing schools in New Zealand at the end of January - and then, the BIG ONE! The first ever win by Terrace in the Head of the River which in 1982 was at the Hinze Dam, Nerang, on March 27!

Swimmers had their first visit to being one of the top two teams in the GPS Swimming for the first time since 1974 - coming second to State High. Terrace News said, “It was a day of gallant performances and memorable moments from a Terrace viewpoint.”

Cricket was up and down as usual, but the team finished fifth in the GPS: TSS, ACGS, BGS, IGS, GT, TGS, BSHS, BBC, NC. The total for all teams playing GPS was 34 wins, 38 draws, 1 TERRACE LOSES A POOL! We see here the “ruins” of the Terrace Pool making way for a tunnel under Gregory tie, 58 losses.

For students in general it was the “Year of the Tunnel” when the tunnel under Gregory Terrace from the old pool area was opened to give students easy and safe access to Victoria Park after long disruptions to Brisbane traffic! (Photo at left) Then bad news for Rugby fans: after the heady days of “Five in a Row”, Terrace actually lost some games: v Downlands 11-12; v BBC 10-0; v BSHS 3-6; v TGS 24-6; v IGS 12-7; v ACGS 611; v BGS 8-22; Then after the holidays: v TSS 18-15; v NC 21-0. Terrace finally finished fourth after Churchie, Grammar and State High.

Good news for the Brothers and the school came when the College Headmaster for 1953-1958, Brother Adams, was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to education. He was living in retirement at St Laurence’s, South Brisbane.

Queenslanders of the Year by the Queensland Day Committee; and three months later School Captain Liam Kelly (Far right above) captained the Australian Debating Team to New Zealand - and he was the only Queenslander in the team. Later both became Rhodes Scholars.

Terrace was placed seventh in the GPS Athletics: BSHS, IGS, BGS, TGS, NC, ACGS, GT, TSS, BBC; but all were pleased when the Tennis team came third: BGS, BSHS, GT, BBC, ACGS, TSS, NC, IGS, TGS. Then late in the year a portrait of Brother Campbell by Sir William Dargie, commissioned by the Old Boys’ Association was hung at the entrance to the Library named after him. Lynam, a leading barrister, died yesterday aged 49.....He captained the University football team from 19241927 and toured New Zealand with the combined University team.....In 1931 he became associate to Mr Justice Macrossan and in 1942 was admitted as a barrister.”

OFFICIAL INSPECTION,1887 REPORT

T

his is the official Brothers’ Report made after a visit to the school in 1887 by Br Treacy: The School [By this is meant what we call in 2002 the College Hall] is a stone building, divided into three ordinary classrooms separated by wooden partitions. A verandah eight or nine feet broad runs along the building at one side, with an entrance from it to each classroom. This is a great protection from the direct rays of the Sun and a great convenience occasionally for classes, particularly in very oppressive weather. [See photo below, taken in 1885] There are 29 boarders and 92 day scholars. The teaching staff consists of five Brothers [Editor: Br F. Bodkin, Br Mullen, Br Duggan, Br Carden and Br Von Allworden - for underlined, see bottom photo] and one visiting teacher, a singing master.

The boarders pay £40 per annum and the day pupils pay .... there are three different rates according to the class they are in.... here is the middle group: No 2 Room of 33 boys 4 boys pay 2 guineas per quarter - about a fifth of full board (8 guineas) - to help readers compare money values, 8 boys pay 1.5 guineas per quarter - a guinea was 21/it costs over $1300 per quarter to 11 boys pay 3/- per week - a guinea for seven weeks educate a secondary student at Terrace 8 boys pay 2/6 per week in 2002. In 1887, 2 guineas! (And this 2 boys are free was regarded as a “high” fee!)

The number in attendance is much lower than one would wish, but then it must be remembered that the town is spread over a large area and that the establishment is situated on the outskirts(!!). Besides there is a very well taught Catholic school near the centre of the town in which no fees are paid [Editor: St James’s school, then taught by lay teachers] while the Brothers’ fees are high. This, together with the objection children have to walk a long distance to school in so oppressive a climate, tells against the Brothers’ establishment as far as the day-pupils are concerned.

The classes are all well taught, and the success of the Matriculation class this year, under Br Joseph Mullen, was very marked.

The Brother Visitor [Brother Treacy] seeing things come to this pass, arranged with the Bishop to borrow £4000 to extend the accommodation for boarders so as to provide for boys from “the bush”. He agreed to give the Bishop a joint trust and to take a mortgage on the place from the new trustee for the £4000 - the school to pay the interest, but in case the Brothers gave up the place the diocese was to pay the Brothers the principal - £4000 - and compound interest on that sum from the date of the new transfer.

(The Editor finds it very significant that even in late 1887, Br Treacy could seriously consider in case the Brothers give up the place. [The vacated Brothers’ House becomes Treacy House.]

Finances must have been a serious worry. The Boarding School wing was completed by the end of 1887 and the top floor of the College Hall was added in 1886. Boarders boomed and there was an embarrassing 90+ boarding at Terrace in 1890. It was then that the move was made to Nudgee which left Terrace with a huge debt of £16,500 - for both places since it was under only one administration at that time. The Nudgee venture was named in adverts in the local press a branch establishment - and many excellent boarding students moved to Nudgee. As Sir James Duhig put it “with the loss of its boarders half the interest of Gregory Terrace went out of it”. It took many years after 1891 for Terrace to recover and advance beyond its former position.) nterestingly a photograph including two of the 1887 staff of Terrace named above and other famous names associated with Terrace in the early days has survived. (Though like many old family photos found in these days there are some faces marked “Unknown”) It is believed the photo was taken at the Brothers’ holiday House at Caloundra, probably in 1905. Standing top right is Br Duggan and the bald head in the bottom row right is that of Br Carden both named in the community at Terrace in 1887 above. The gentleman sitting at the far right was our first headmaster thirty years before, Br Barrett.

The young Brother sitting in the front left corner is the first Terracian to become a Brother, the very gifted Br Fitzgerald; and the one behind him slightly to the left is probably Terrace’s best known Headmaster, Br Reidy who started his first (of four) stints at Terrace in 1905. He finished forty-one years later in 1946! He was a great lover of Rugby and he changed the colours to red and black when the Nudgee Headmaster in 1923-24 refused to change from the blue and white the boarders had used at Terrace. The snowy-haired gentleman on Br Carden’s right was Headmaster in 1915-1916, Br O’Brien. The Brother next to Br Barrett, Br Hughes, was a famous collector on the Queensland goldfields. Another well-known early Brother seated on Br O’Brien’s right in the row behind was Br J. C. Ryan several times Headmaster of Nudgee. He was in charge when Editor’s father, a very nervous Sub-Junior from Esk, arrived at Nudgee in 1919!

These men did early work for Edmund Rice Education in Queensland. May they rest in peace.

ost readers will remember that after the Consultant in Residence Programme for 2000, a CD ROM was produced, titled The Living History of Our First 125 Years. This proved to be a popular CD ROM and many copies found their way into Terrace homes. [Cover, right. From Terracian Nov, 2000] Last year it was announced that this CD ROM had won the Australian section of the APICTA Awards and we were very happy for Mr Peter Whitehouse and members of the Faculty of Information Services. Recently it was announced that the Australian winner was also winner for Asia Pacific. We congratulate Peter again and wish him well in Malaysia getting the Award.

he Terrace tradition of celebrating Anzac Day at a College Assembly a couple of days before the actual day continued this year. As usual some of the Old Boys who had served in World War 2 made the effort to join the School Assembly at midday and their presence with the Guest of Honour and his wife made the day just that more meaningful to the eleven hundred students.

It is a memorial service taken very seriously by the students. And this is a fact being commented on by more and more observers of the behaviour of young Australians. It is no longer a “One day of the year” syndrome where the young really look down on the old for their way of celebrating on Anzac Day. These days young (and also older) people are going in their thousands to Gallipoli to ponder on what happened there nearly ninety years ago. With the ancient hymns and heartbreaking bugle calls, the Anzacs and their heroic foes are celebrated and renewed in this place by a new generation, showing a resurgence of interest in Australia’s heritage as the last living links to WWI are laid to rest. The emergence of mateship as an Australian trait is the overwhelming feature of the Gallipoli conflict. Piers Ackerman - At Gallipoli, April 28 2002.

Dr McManus recited Binyon’s Ode to the Fallen and this was followed by the Last Post then a minute of complete silence and then the Reveille. Then followed prayers led by Tom Beaton for the reward of eternal life for all those who have died in war. Then Barrett House and Jackson George led the whole school in the Peace Prayer of St Francis of Assisi.

Finally the flags and symbols were removed and the School Leaders led the Principal, the Guest of Honour and the Veterans from the Hall.

ANNUAL PRODUCTION WITH ALL HALLOWS’ SCHOOL, 2002

ollowing the success of Charlie Girl produced by Terrace and All Hallows’ last year it was clear that the next production would have to be at least well above average! (An earlier production from 1990 is talked about on P13 and that was certainly excellent.) To make it even more difficult the choice was to present a play and not just any play, but Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

The play was first produced in the “McCarthy Era”, a very sad time for America and especially for anyone connected with film and television, business, education and government because the House Committee of Un-American Activities was naming people who had been members of the American Communist Party and many innocent people had their views persecuted and their careers ruined.

Arthur Miller saw the connection between this modern-day “witch hunt” and the events at Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, when friends and neighbours were turned into stony enemies - what they called the breaking of charity with one another. As the Programme Notes say, “Trial-by-media and public enquiries are a fact of life today. It is so important to be aware of what happened when an enquiry is taken to extremes. Is it possible to go too far in pursuit of the truth?”

One of the big adv a n tages of using this play for a school production is that there are so many characters involved.

There is a cast of twenty-eight plus nine dancers and a choir of ten. As well, since the students had to do everything assisted by their teachers a huge Crew was needed. Under the direction of Mrs Sandra Hines and Ms Catherine Heffernan there were two stage managers and their assistant, a backstage crew of ten, with ten more for props and set construction. Set painting involved six and audio-visuals seventeen. Costumes and costume maintenance took nine and make-up and hair needed seven more! Among the teachers were those working at Set construction, set painting, audio-visuals, costumes and makeup, choreography, choir direction and logo and poster design!

As Dr McManus wrote in the Terrace News “A highlight of this week is our annual production with All Hallows’ School, being staged at the Gardens Point Theatre at QUT. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a very engrossing play, which the students have prepared with great care and are performing with great skill. We congratulate all of the students and the staff responsible for this year’s production.” As one visitor commented, “The production was so thoroughly professional that it was hard to believe that it was being performed by schoolchildren.”

Ms Sargent, the Director of Culture, wrote, “It is a mammoth task to stage a production of this quality and it involved countless hours of work..

There were 46 students involved in the cast and 55 in the various crews...Feedback from the audience highlighted the professional standard of the performances. It would not be possible for these standards to be reached without the tremendous support they have received from a number of staff and I would wish to thank Mrs Hines, Miss Heffernan, Mr Whitehouse, Mr Vink, Mrs Price-Stone, Mrs Carr, Mrs Banathy, Mr Smith, Mrs Henry, Mrs Connolly and Mrs Klisch. Special thanks to Mrs Jill Knapp and a number of parents for their assistance with the catering, Mrs Margery Jackman and Miss Liz Crane from All Hallows, Mrs Kath Thomson for her work with the make-up crew and Mr James Robertson for his choreography work with the dancers.”

An Old Boys’ cricket day is being organised by Mr Dominic Katter in conjunction with Mr Michael Broad. A suggestion made by a member of the Association at the AGM this year was that there should be at least three teams playing rather than just the usual school first eleven against an Old Boys’ first eleven. I have taken up that suggestion and hopefully we can carry it through. The games will be played on either a Saturday or Sunday and will occur sometime in September or October.

From an idea that was originally generated by Mr Michael O’Rourke, your Old Boys’ Association is attempting to organise a lunch or dinner to celebrate the 200 years of Edmund Rice Teaching. We are attempting to organise this as a celebration with all Christian Brother Colleges. So far, I have had positive responses from St Patrick’s Shorncliffe, St Mary’s Toowoomba, Nudgee College and St Brendan’s Yeppoon. There is further work to be done to get this celebration up and going but I am hopeful that it will occur in around September/October this year.

THAT 1953 ORCHESTRA AGAIN!

It was I who founded the College Orchestra in 1953. I was Choir Master from June 1950 to December 1953.

I didn’t know/remember a photo of the Orchestra had been taken.

“Its origin was simple: so much talent lying idle prompted me to gather students from all classes of the school; some, unhappily were turned away; one went on to join the Christian Brothers. The presence of the School Band helped considerably with brass and percussion.....

“Leigh Atkinson who is using a percussion instrument in the top back row was both a very talented musician who won the Open Pianoforte Section along with the Boy Soprano Championship: a classic double. Brian Buggy’s talents have been well documented; his extraordinary talent with brass instruments continues to be well known. With Brian’s perfect pitch holding the Alto part of the Choir and Leigh the Soprano it was no surprise the Choir won the first Christian Brothers of Queensland Choral Competition in 1953.

“In 1953 an extraordinarily talented musician Enid Tarrant (hope my spelling is correct) accompanied all our competitors. When she resumed her professional life, it was Mrs Eunice Wilkes who replaced her. An ABC artist herself (Contralto) and also a marvellous and talented musician, the College was culturally blessed in the highest degree.”

AN EARLY TERRACE CATHOLIC LAYMAN

I

n 1876 (its second year of existence) one of the new boys who came from St James’s school to St Joseph’s was Patrick Joseph Henry who became involved in the printing trade after school.

He worked at the “Australian” newspaper which had been founded by Bishop Quinn in 1878 to provide a voice for Queensland Catholics. However, the first system of getting voluntary help from certain priests and sisters was not successful in the long term.

In Catholicism in Queensland published by Victor L Gray in 1910 we read, “It was decided to transfer the paper to Patrick Joseph Henry, who had been actively connected with same, in differing capacities since the beginning of his business career. He is now the editor and proprietor. He is well and favourably known to the people of Brisbane. He presently also Patrick Henry fills the difficult position of conductor of the Cathedral Choir.”

200 YEARS OF EDMUND RICE EDUCATION

ne of the features each year of the Brisbane GPS is the Terrace/Nudgee football match and this year was no exception.

More than 7000 people turned up to see the games!

However, since 2002 is just 200 years since Blessed Edmund Rice started his first school for under-privileged boys in Waterford in 1802, the two Edmund Rice schools in the GPS (Nudgee, 1891 and Terrace, 1875) incorporated a Paraliturgy into their annual football day. Nudgee Junior was also present and involved.

The Paraliturgy, Remembering the Past, Living the Present, Seeking the Future, was led by a group of cantors from the three schools and there were readers for appropriate passages. Br Luke Quinn, leader of the Christian Brothers in Queensland also spoke.

The three Principals (Mr Daryl Hanly of Nudgee, Dr Brendan McManus and Mr Sean Gordon of Nudgee Junion) also planted a memorial tree each to commemorate the two hundred years of the existence of Edmund Rice Education somewhere in the world. The Australian Rugby Honour Boards of the three schools were printed on the programme as was a Roll of Honour naming Christian Brothers and students from the beginning. The Ruby Doyle Hospitality Centre was at full capacity and parents also assisted John Jeffrey on the barbecues. It was a great day for parent support Honours were fairly even in the games. Of the thirty-five Rugby games Terrace won sixteen; and of the sixteen Soccer games there were nine wins and three draws. Nudgee won the First XV 22-8 and Terrace won the First Soccer 2-1 in an exciting finish.

TENNYSON COMPLEX COMES “OF AGE”!

une 6, 1964, was a baptism day for Tennyson in more ways than one. Three fields had been surveyed for football, pegged out and marked. Nine age teams from Ipswich Grammar were to play at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. - the first games on the new Terrace fields. But heavy rain poured all day, the buses from Ipswich would not venture past the entrance and several cars were bogged between the entrance and the fields as the drive was one mass of mud, slush and flowing water. The men spent most of the morning pulling PLAYERS AT TENNYSON - NOTICE THE “TENNYSON” BACKGROUND cars out of bogs, but The Under 13A team won 21-7 against Nudgee. Terrace players from the left: Alex the games began on Barker (8R), Matt Randell (8B at rear), Tim Baartz (8T with the ball), Kieran McAuliffe time and went ahead, (8R), Jack Mullins (8T), Lachlan Poiner (8R), William Kirby (8K) three each hour on the hour. All the boys, even the visitors, took everything in good part.

May 4, 2002, was a very different day. Again it was a wet day, but instead of nine games, the College had planned for FIFTY-THREE, all against Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie).

For Rugby there were 26 secondary games and 10 primary games; while for Soccer there were 14 secondary and three primary.

Dr McManus said, “I particularly wanted to note the hard work of our curator, Mr Alan Kennedy and his assistant Mr Craig Jesburg, for the consistently high standard of preparation of our facilities at Tennyson each week. Last Saturday when we had fiftythree games of Soccer and Rugby in the wet, the fields stood up remarkably well. This is a great tribute to our Tennyson staff and I thank them on behalf of all of us.”

And I can imagine “Doc” Campbell, Br Davy, Brian Bourke (P3) and so many The First XV encourage one another near the Kate Smith Scoreboard other Brothers and Dads who worked before the Nudgee match. The size of the Bourke-designed score so hard for years at Tennyson giving board is shown by comparing it with the four scorers. one another a slap on the back in heaven over the coming of age at Tennyson!

1952 REUNION UPDATE

lans are well advanced for two 50-year reunions for the Senior year group of 1952. James Crowley and Henry Weld who co-ordinated the 25-year reunion are again organising two functions for 2002.

James has sought the assistance of The Terracian in tracing two members of their cohort missed in 1977. Clem Harrington, brother of John (c 1950) - the family lived at Ashgrove. Also, Colin Huddy, last known living in Papua New Guinea.
