From the Principal Dear Members of the Terrace Family, Welcome to the latest edition of The Terracian. It would be fair to say that this edition reflects the diversity and opportunity that exists within the Terrace Family.

A number of stories provide you with an insight into the life of a student at Terrace. These include highlights of the tours to England and Japan, the wonderful House Choir Night at the Pat Rafter Arena, the Anzac Day Parade, We will Rock You, the musical and of course, the Norman Clarke Concert. The students also continue to excel in the areas of sport, culture and with their academic journey.

On the Old Boy horizon, this edition features stories of Old Boys involved in justice and solidarity and medical services for those in need, as well as all of the recent happenings from the GTOBA. Recently, there have been two significant gatherings at the College featuring our Old Boys.

The first was the unveiling and blessing of the Vietnam Honour Board in College Hall. Several of our veterans and their families gathered for this special event. The second event was held to acknowledge the 2018 Rhodes Scholar, Damian Maher - GT 2011. At this assembly, the College had the opportunity to congratulate Damian on his

outstanding achievement. Along with Damian, six of our 18 Rhodes Scholars and guests gathered to acknowledge this wonderful achievement.

This was a unique gathering of exceptional Old Boys and something that inspired the current students.

The Christian Brothers have, and continue to be, an integral part of the Terrace story. In this edition, we celebrate 150 years of the Christian Brothers, and in particular, Br Ambrose Treacy, and highlight the significant role the Brothers have had in our Terrace story.

Finally, although not featured in this edition of The Terracian, I ask all Terracians to continue to pray for the recovery of Conor Tweedy, who recently sustained a serious neck and spinal cord injury in a rugby game. Conor continues to make slow progress in his long journey to recovery. The ‘other’ in Brother Written by: Mr Charles Brauer The sound of a bell ringing has echoed through the Treacy Centre at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace for over one hundred years, signifying the start of the day, time for class, time for lunch, or time to share a meal together.

For over one hundred years Christian Brothers lived at Terrace, and the ringing of a bell was a call to being a brother. For over one hundred years the Brothers ate breakfast together, laughed together, taught together, shared dinner together, and just as we do at the end of each day, they reflected or prayed together. They were ‘Brother’ to one another.

The Christian Brothers know ‘brother’ as a verb, not a noun. Something they do. Something they are called to do.

This is often referred to as finding ‘the other’ in Brother. Legendary Terrace Old Boy, Br Vic Larkin, who recently passed away, lived and breathed this philosophy every day in his vocation as a Christian Brother. On his very first day of ‘brothering’ he spoke these very words as he made his vows to become a Christian Brother in 1955: “I consecrate myself to you, to procure your glory as far as lies in me, or what you require from me. I beg now to become a member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers of the Christian Schools of Ireland, founded under the protection of Jesus and his mother, Mary; and I promise that I will remain forever, in order to teach boys in any school to which

For the past 143 years, Christian Brothers have enacted these same vows across all reaches of Queensland. From Brisbane to Cooktown, Toowoomba, Charters Towers, Maryborough, Townsville and to Rockhampton, hundreds of Christian Brothers have honoured their life-long commitment to being ‘brother’ to others. A snapshot of this mission, its adventures and milestones, is currently on display in the Founders' Room at the College. A new life at Gunnebah Old Boys Mr Warwick Parer, GT 1981-85 and Mr Christopher Gibbings, GT 1980-84 are working together to help bring a new life to those suffering from addiction.

Gunnebah, which means ‘new life,’ was once a place where aboriginal women came to give birth. Thanks to Warwick and his team it is now a place where those suffering from addiction can start their ‘new life’ on the road to recovery. Located in the hinterland 35 minutes from the Gold Coast, Gunnebah is surrounded by natural beauty and a sense of calm.

Warwick started his career as a solicitor and later went into the world of business in a diverse range of areas, including financial management. He was also a Captain in the Australian Army Reserve. After discovering that there was a need for rehabilitation for ordinary people - those who

couldn’t afford or didn’t want the ‘celebrity rehabilitation’ and who didn’t want to attend a government facility, Warwick and his wife Jenny (All Hallows' School 1981-85) the Medical Director at Gunnebah, decided to create their own addiction retreat. They wanted a rehab that they would feel confident to send a family member to, if it was ever needed.

After two years of research and development, Gunnebah was opened in May last year.

Warwick, Jenny and Christopher work with a team of specialists including a clinical psychologist, addiction counsellor, activities coordinator and a meal planner.

Together they make Gunnebah a holistic retreat, addressing not only addiction but a whole life change.

Sleep, exercise, diet and evidence based, best practice therapy combine to meet the needs of those

who choose to stay at the retreat.

Both Warwick and Chris attribute their dedication to Gunnebah to their experiences at Terrace and the College’s dedication to justice and solidarity and service to others.

To Warwick, the connection to the people and the families who come to Gunnebah for help is extremely important. When talking to Warwick, he could not express enough the importance of the holistic nature of Gunnebah and how all elements combine to help those recovering from addiction: Success cannot be measured in success rates; it is up to the individual to succeed, we offer the best place possible to help them succeed.

Support does not stop once a person leaves Gunnebah, we keep in touch and provide support as needed, every person is different.

Chris views his role at Gunnebah on a very spiritual basis. He has spent much of his life building relationships with the marginalised and travelling with them on their journey. He has worked with communit y development and sustainable communities as well as working with the Red Cross as an international worker with numerous homeless and refugee projects.

At Gunnebah, Chris keeps the retreat running and supports the

community through the gardens and animals as well as meditation and mindfulness sessions. Chris not only facilitates but participates in the journey of those at Gunnebah.

In helping others live a healthy and fulfilling life, Chris can similarly live his own.

The passion that both Chris and Warwick have for Gunnebah is evident when speaking to them.

They genuinely want to help those in need who are struggling with

addiction. For them, success is all about helping others take control of their addiction and to move forward in the best way possible.

The sense of warmth, welcome and calm at Gunnebah was hard to leave. The location is beautiful with access to long walks, activities, wholesome food and support. It is understandable why, for many, Gunnebah has provided an answer and a chance to rehabilitate and change their lives.

We Will Rock You Terrace loves a production and to be able to perform a ‘first’ makes it all the more exciting. This year’s production, We Will Rock You was full of firsts! The College was the first school to perform the musical in Australia, tickets sold out in 48 hours and it was also the largest cast to date with over 200 students performing in the four-night run.

We Will Rock You is based on the songs of British rock band Queen and a book by Ben Elton. It is the tenth longest running musical in West End history.

The College was fortunate to have the help of many dedicated professionals and parents who generously gave their time to make the musical magic happen.

Terrace tours Japan Written by: Mrs Mary Cassidy It was an early start on the morning of 2 April as we prepared to embark on our trip to the land of the Rising Sun. Our group consisted of 21 students of Japanese, Mr Stormonth, Mr and Mrs Fall and myself.

Japan is just eight and a half hours away, and we arrived around 6pm that night. The boys got their first experience of the efficiency of the Japanese railway system as we travelled from the airport at Narita to central Tokyo.

My newly purchased Fitbit told me that we walked 23.6 kilometres the next day. The boys took in the sights of Tokyo from the Tokyo Sky Tree and from there we went to Sensooji, the oldest temple in the city, Akihabara, the electrical district, Harajuku, a famous fashion and shopping district, Meiji Jingu Shrine and then on to Shibuya to one of the busiest and most famous

crossings in the world. After dinner, we limped back to the Sakura hotel in Ikebukuro to celebrate Joe Wenck’s birthday. There was no rest for the wicked. We were up early the next morning to ensure that we made the most of a full day at Disneyland. I think it lived up to its name ‘the happiest place on earth’.

The next day we left Tokyo on the Shinkansen (bullet train) and headed down the island of Honshu to the Kansai region. We are very fortunate to have a relationship with Konan Boys’ School which is located in Ashiya between Osaka and Kobe. The boys had the opportunity to experience life in a real Japanese home and many boys, on their return three days later, said it was the most awesome experience they had ever had.

Once back together we took in the sights of the ancient Japanese capital of Kyoto, spent time with

the deer at Nara and took time in Hiroshima to learn and consider the importance of peace in our world. We also spent an afternoon on Miyajima island, home to the famous Torii gates.

We spent a morning at Konan Boys’ school, with the Terrace boys competing against the Konan boys to see who you knew the most about each other’s countries. I am pleased to say that Terrace won that competition and we were able to leave with our heads held high.

Every day gave the boys the opportunity to use their Japanese, taste amazing Japanese food and try new things. By all accounts, the trip was a great success with many of the young men already contemplating their next visit. Most are planning to go without teachers the next time, I can’t imagine why?

Terrace Football tour Written by: Mr John Kosmina During the Easter break this year I was lucky enough to travel to England with the Terrace Football 1sts and a number of younger players for what turned out to be a really wonderful experience for players and staff alike. It was as intense as it was enjoyable and a great way for all concerned to bond for the season ahead.

The pressure was on from the start, which is the best way to test the mettle of a player and the staff! We hit the ground running after an early morning arrival in Manchester with a training session at the Manchester City training facility, backing up in the afternoon with a tour of Etihad Stadium. This set the tone and the pace for the next 11 days, which took in more training at City with their Academy

coaches, a trip to Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, as VIP spectators at a match and a tour of their training facility before decamping to Bournemouth where we spent the rest of our time.

The real test came here with daily training, sometimes double sessions, and in the three games played by each squad. The boys all stood up against stiff opposition, re m a i n i n g u n d efe a te d a n d proudly representing Terrace. The Bournemouth coaching staff were excellent, and their hospitality was exemplary, we were made to feel very welcome.

A quick trip to London for a visit to the famous Wembley Stadium, an overnight stay for tired bodies and a damp and foggy sightseeing walk the next morning before departing for the airport.

We achieved much in a short time and for coaches Mr Mitch Edwards and myself, we learned a great deal about the character and personalities of our charges. It was a wonderful way to prepare for the season and to learn about the culture of the College from the staff.

This year marks one hundred years since the formation of The Great Public Schools' (GPS) Association of Queensland. The centenary celebrates the spirit of fellowship, healthy competition and creativity that has enriched the GPS community of students, Old Boys, parents, staff and friends across the Association’s nine member schools.

It is difficult today to even imagine what life was like in South East Queensland one hundred years ago. However, this significant milestone compels us to pause for a moment in our busy 21st century lives to consider the last one hundred years of GPS. The centenary is a chance to connect with our past. As we take the time to meet them, we realise our predecessors were not so different to us.

While we can share footage of GPS sports matches captured by drones controlled by smartphones we remember that previous GPS boys

years strong only saw their very first television screen in 1959.

When we enthuse over the latest music downloads we realise we are no different to the students of the last one hundred years, some of whom were in the audience at Festival Hall in 1964 when 12 000 people watched the Beatles perform.

Being part of the GPS is being a part of something far greater than us. It is a global community that extends far beyond the school gates, and lasts a lifetime. As we remember the fellowship, commitment and

service to one another among our member schools in the past, we celebrate those values in our own futures. This year we mark one hundred years of instilling the courage to celebrate both victories and honourable defeats, to play with pride and lose with integrity.

We celebrate the creativity and dedication which brings our students together through music.

We remember the relentless pursuit of excellence, the extraordinary power of opportunity, the goodnatured rivalry and steadfast bonds that have been formed, and we celebrate being one hundred years strong.

One hundred years of war cries that travel across the fields, outside the pitch, over the fence.

One hundred years of waking up in the early hours to train, and of practice well into the night.

Our Veterans honoured On 1 June, Terrace Old Boys, their families and the Year 11 Modern History students gathered in College Hall for the blessing and unveiling of the Honour Board dedicated to our Terracian Malayan Emergency, Korean and Vietnam War Veterans.

Dr Michael Carroll opened the ceremony and acknowledged the dedication and sacrifice made by our Old Boys. The Year 11s offered prayers and Fr Gerry Hall blessed the Honour Board.

This was followed by a morning tea where

the students had the opportunity to speak with the Old Boy Veterans and learn first hand the importance of their stories.

Following morning tea, the Old Boys and guests were invited to the College Museum to view a special exhibition. Along with items loaned from the Australian War Memorial and the Queensland Museum, the exhibition featured biographies on each of the 61 Vietnam Veterans and their personal experiences of the war.

The exhibition will occur annually to coincide with the Year 11 Modern History unit on the Vietnam War. Several of our Old Boy Veterans have offered to come back to the College and speak to the students.

The students are ex tremely fortunate to have such a wealth of oral history available to them.

The College acknowledges and honours the dedication and sacrifice of our Old Boys who fought in the Malayan Campaign, Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Justice and solidarity in a Kombi van Terrace takes pride in teaching students how to help others through Eddie’s Van, the Big Brekky, the Terrace Timor Network and House Friendship Groups. The message of justice and solidarity lasts long after a student has left. Over the years we have seen our Old Boys reaching out and helping those on the margins to improve their lives. In Timor-Leste and across Australia, the Terrace Family is making a difference.

Old Boy Dr Joss (Jonathan) O’Loan - GT, 1993-2000, is one of those giving back to the community through the Kombi Clinic. Joss and fellow GP Dr Matt Young created the clinic in an old Kombi van, providing street services to people at risk of Hepatitis C. This clinic brings medical care directly to those who are most vulnerable and gives them easy access to treatment without having to face the stigma still associated with Hepatitis C. The clinic helps people seeking treatment and those who can’t access mainstream medical services. Hepatitis C affects around 170 000 Australians, and Inala has one of the highest rates of infection in the country.

The clinic has already treated around 300 people, providing lifesaving treatment to a deadly but easily curable disease. The clinic enables the doctors and nurses to talk to people, find out about their individual needs, test and treat through the free walk in consultations.

Joss and the team don their Hawaiian shirts, play old school rock music and stop at drug centres, homeless shelters and street corners, proving that simple ideas coupled with dedication can make a real difference to people’s lives and helps take serious steps to help eradicate Hepatitis C in Australia by 2030.

Joss has been nominated for the Westfield Local Hero award to be announced on 13 August.

The Kombi Clinic team was also recognised at the recent Queensland Day awards.

Joss says that during his time at Terrace Br Damien Price and the Eddie’s Van had an enormous influence on his view to helping others less fortunate than himself.

Joss continued to volunteer with the Eddie’s Van for ten years after he left school, which in turn served as an inspiration for the Kombi Clinic: The Eddie’s Van had a ‘take it to the people’ approach which we have used with the Kombi Clinic. Terrace Anzac Band On 25 April the Terrace Anzac Band formed the largest band to participate in the Anzac Day parade through Brisbane City. The band consisted of 120 Terrace students from all year levels. The boys conducted themselves in a professional manner throughout the day, proudly representing Terrace in the wider community.

Norman Clarke Concert The annual Norman Clarke concert was held on 3 June at Villanova College. The concert was outstanding, with great musical moments and solos performed by the Terrace musicians. This concert and the growth of the Terrace Music program would not be possible without the generosity and support of Mr Norman Clarke - GT 1952.

Generations of

Terrace Gentlemen Written by: Mr Peter Carroll Mr Gerard and Mrs Sheila Carroll were Irish migrants to Australia. Having settled in Brisbane, they sent their four sons to Terrace, the first in 1957. These four boys were to become the first of many generations of Carroll men to attend Terrace.

First generation Peter - GT, 1957-1965. Graduated in Commerce (University of Queensland) and Law (Macquarie), became a Chartered Accountant and a partner in Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. Currently a Company Director. Peter was appointed the first Chairman of the School Finance Committee in 1994 and is still a member of the committee.

Bernard - GT, 1958-1966. Graduated in Civil Engineering from The University of Queensland but died in a work-related accident in 1973.

Patrick – GT, 1960-68. Patrick was Dux of the College in 1968. After Terrace, he went to the University of Queensland where he graduated with First Class Honours in Chemical Engineering. He also played Premier Grade Rugby for Easts.

As a Rhodes Scholar, he attended Magdalen College at Oxford and graduated in Medicine. He returned to Australia to do his internship at the Brisbane Mater Hospital before completing his College of Physicians exams. He then went to Harvard to undertake a Master of Public Health. He subsequently returned to Queensland and is currently the Director of Medicine at Redcliffe Hospital.

Declan - GT, 1975-77. Declan graduated in Optometry and Business from the Queensland University of Technology.

Five younger Grandsons are on the waiting list for subsequent years.

In 2018, 15 members of the Carroll family have attended or are current students of Terrace, with at least five more to come in the next few years. It is quite a formidable list!

Apology The Terracian would like to extend an apology to Mr Patrick Carroll. In the April edition of the Terracian, Patrick was listed as having attended the school from 1957-64. Unfortunately, Patrick’s dates were confused with another Patrick Carroll who also attended the College. Rhodes Scholar, Patrick Carroll was at Terrace from 1960-68.

Sport update Swimming Our Terrace swimmers achieved excellent results at the Age Nationals competition. This year was one of the most successful years at the competition for our swimmers.

Congratulations to George Williamson (Year 9), Sam Voltz (Year 10), Nicholas Morris (Year 8), Terrance Suttie (Year 9), Matthew Lillicrap (Year 11) and Terence Siao (Year 10) who achieved personal bests in their races. Congratulations also to Hayslee Cassidy (Year 8) who won gold medals in the 13 Years 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke and to Tom Neil (Year 11) who won silver in the 15 Years 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle, 400m individual medley, gold in the 400m freestyle and 1500m freestyle and bronze in the 100m freestyle. Tom has also been selected in the Junior Australian team for the Pan Pacific Championships in August.

Congratulations also to Jack Moore (Year 6) who competed at the recent School Championships in Hobart. Jack is the new record holder for the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly.

It was a very successful meet for Jack.

AFL Saxon Crozier (Year 10) and Hugh Fidler (Year 11) have been selected in the Queensland Under 16s AFL team. The boys will be playing in a National competition this month. Good luck to both the boys.

Waterpolo Lachlan Steains (Year 11) and the Queensland team who won a silver medal in Perth at the Australian Schoolboys Waterpolo Championships.

Hockey Seamus Penny (Year 8) has been selected in the Queensland Field Hockey team, as Goal Keeper, to compete in Hobart in October.

Rugby Will Roach, Dan Condon and Glen Vaihu were selected in the Queensland Schoolboys 1 Team and Will Kirk was selected in Queensland 2. All boys travelled to Sydney to contest the National Schoolboys Championships. Will Roach was rewarded with selection in the Australian Schoolboys Squad for his outstanding performances.

Congratulations to all of these boys, we are proud of their hard work and dedication.

House Choir It was a new venue for the annual House Choir event this year. Held at the Pat Rafter Arena at the Tennis Centre, the boys did not disappoint with their singing and dancing prowess. Performing to a packed crowd, Buckley won the House Choir Cup with their theme of ‘Tell 'Em He's Dreaming'. Mahoney took out the coveted People’s Choice Shield with their 'Time Warp' performance.

Remembering

Terence McSharry There was no wiser head in the force.

Terence McSharry was a forgotten soldier and one hundred years passed before his name was remembered on a Roll of Honour.

Thanks to Mr William O'Chee and the RSL his name was finally commemorated.

On 12 May 1915 he landed on the shores of Gallipoli. He saw heavy fire and action and on 29 May he was awarded the Military Cross for exceptional bravery and resourcefulness.

Promoted to Captain, Terence joined the 15th Battalion.

Terence was also a Terrace Old Boy. He attended the College in its early days as a school from 1890 to 1895. In 1896, after graduation, he worked briefly as a bookkeeper and surveyor, before he was commissioned into the Australian Army Intelligence Corps.

In France, Terence was mentioned four times in Dispatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order for Devotion to Duty and the Companion of St Michael and St George. Terence was Commanding Officer to many Terrace Old Boys during the war and was mentioned in Charles Bean’s official history of WWI.

Terence enlisted in the AIF on 20 August 1914 as a lieutenant in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment.

During a battle on the Somme on 6 August 1918, Terence stopped to help a wounded soldier and was

mortally wounded. He was buried in the Corbie cemetery in France and was posthumously awarded a Bar to the Distinguished Service Order, making him the highest awarded WWI soldier in Brisbane.

Terrace Flashback Rugby Tour to Sydney – 1930 Captain of the 1st XV James Portley – GT, 1925-30, wrote a report on the College Rugby tour to Sydney for the 1930 Yearbook. The report took four pages of the yearbook and shared the experience of the 17 boys and their trip with Br Kearney.

It was the first time to Sydney for many of the boys. James wrote: …our gaping eyes became accustomed to the new, therefore terrifying environment…

The boys were hosted by Waverley College and stayed with families around Sydney. The homestay experience impressed the boys to no end: We found ourselves to be honoured guests in some of Sydney’s excellent homes. Our hosts were most kind

and considerate and made us feel “at home” immediately. Nothing was a trouble to them. I think that this was the most pleasant feature of the trip...

The team played two games against Waverley College, drawing one game and losing the other, by accounts they were hard fought and well played games. The team was also given the grand tour of Sydney by their Waverley College hosts. Br Kearney accompanied the boys and kept them entertained on the long train journey from Brisbane to Sydney and return. Jim states that Br Kearney was just like a father and brother to the team: He sang for us, told us interesting anecdotes and joined in our fun.

The benefits of our trip were immense from an educational standpoint.

We saw what a wonderful future Australia has in front of her; we realised what a wonderful nation Australia can be; we saw one of the most brilliant engineering feats ever executed – the construction of the Harbour Bridge.

Due to an injury throwing a record breaking shot put at GPS Athletics, James could not continue his Rugby career. After he graduated from Terrace in 1930, he went to university before joining the 64th Battalion and fighting in the Second World War.

James sums up the trip beautifully in his last paragraph and captures a moment in Australia’s history that

TLG Flashback A brief history of the Terrace Ladies Group The first known gathering of support from the ladies of the Terrace Family was the formation of a committee by Br Norbert Moore to raise funds for the alterations and repair of the College buildings in 1925. According to sources, their activity was highly successful, although falling short of the desired amount by £3000.

In 1939 the first ‘Terrace Ball’ was held at the Belle Vue Hotel. The President of the Ball committee was Mrs Sheehy with Mrs Tyrrell as Vice President. The Balls continued after the war years with great success. The ladies, however, did not organise the Ball under their own banner. Instead they organised the balls under the auspices of the Old Boys' Association.

In 1956 the ‘Terrace Auxiliary’ was formed for the mothers of boys. Its chief activity was the daily staffing

of the Tuck Shop, feeding over 800 boys daily. The Auxiliary also catered for sports days and socials.

In these early days, the Tuck Shop was housed in the out building next to the Treacy Centre. The building now acts as a store room for the College Archives.

In 1967 the General Ladies Commit tee was formed and contained ten members who were mothers of boys from each section of the College. The 1967 yearbook states: The committee has set out in an effort to involve as many Terrace mothers and friends as possible in the different functions held in aid of projects associated with the College.

The Terrace Ladies Group has certainly grown in the past 50 years.

The TLG was responsible for raising funds for the Library project (1972), Lake Maroon (1977) and furnishing the pavilion at Tennyson (1984).

In its tenth year, the TLG raised

$5000 from various activities, by its twentieth year the funds raised had reached $26 000. The TLG has now become an organised group of committed women supported widely by the Terrace Family.

The TLG are looking at collating a detailed histor y with past presidents and executive members being listed. If you know of ladies who have served the College in these roles before 2010 to its official commencement back in the 1970s, the TLG would love you to send those names and years to terrace_ladies@outlook.com.

The TLG have several names, but need to fill in some gaps in the time line. Any photos of ladies, past functions or details on capital works would be terrific to have as well.

Anyone visiting remote rural TimorLeste (East Timor) is not only struck by the beauty of the landscape and the wide smiles of the children - but also of the hand to mouth existence and extreme poverty still experienced by families.

However, when it comes to any one of us making any real change for our neighbours in developing countries like East Timor, how can we realistically “be the change we want to see in the world”? In classrooms and boardrooms, it’s one thing to talk passionately about the importance of social justice, but quite another to truly embody this belief by grounding it in meaningful actions.

The evolution of the Terrace Timor Network is a great example of the embodiment of social justice in action. It has genuinely changed lives and become a vehicle through which every one of us can take simple actions to become part of bringing sustainable change for our friends in Timor.

When the first group of Terrace boys visited recently-post war Timor Leste in 2005, they were confronted by the extreme poverty and need of the families in the remote mountain areas. They responded not with detachment or pity, but with a will to act. For justice. With their own

families and the broader Terrace community, the boys wanted to do what they could to bring an improvement in conditions for their neighbours. From that time until now, a dedicated group of parents, teachers and students work as the Terrace Timor Network (TTN) to promote real change through sustainable and best practice economic development, in partnership with the local community.

It is a time of change for TTN. As the Christian Brothers leave TimorLeste at the end of 2018, TTN has partnered with Mary MacKillop Today (MMT) to continue to support the women of Railaco Craic.

Current Terrace parent and TTN co-President Mrs Rebecca Tweedy says: We are so very grateful to the Christian Brothers Frank and Peter who have supported the people of rural East Timor for so long. They will be sadly missed.

Looking forward, TTN will benefit greatly from working with such a n ex p e r i e n c e d e c o n o m i c development agency such as MMT. The work done over the last decade

by TTN in working with the ladies to make cards will continue to be a great example of social justice in action. The proceeds from the sales of coffee and other products is making a tangible difference

for our Timor family. Families can afford education for their children and food for the table. TTN is also the key global social justice program for the Terrace community and provides an opportunity for Terrace students, parents, teachers and friends of Terrace to bring their knowledge, skills and support to Timor. As a friend of Terrace, please support TTN, you can make a real difference.

Our recent Timor Friendship Day held on a wonderful Saturday of rugby at Tennyson was an important reminder to the Terrace community of our connection with the people of East Timor. This annual event brings together many in our community in celebration of our work and commitment to supporting TTN’s programmes in Railaco Craic.

Giving Day magic

Foundation report Something truly magical happened on 23 May. The inaugural “Never Terrace Apart Old Boys’ Bursary Giving Day” was launched and reached its ambitious $100 000 target in 96 minutes! The goal was then doubled, and after 24 hours 257 donors had raised $209 184.

Collaboration between the Gregory Terrace Foundation (GTF) and the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association (GTOBA) made this initiative possible. Thank you to the three Old Boys who personally matched gifts up to $75 000 (you know who you are) in the hope that new donors of all ages would be

inspired to help provide other boys with the opportunity to receive a Terrace education.

In the lead up, people’s attention was captured via a comedic film clip staring ‘Terrace characters’, which attracted approximately 30 000 social media views. Studio Kirby donated their filming skills, capturing characters that included Mr Andrew Backstrom, GT 1985, a pilot, walking into an ‘airport lounge’ and Dr Anthony Crombie, GT 1996, a surgeon ‘scrubbing in’.

The day demonstrated the strength of the Old Boys’ network by embracing the opportunity to ‘give back’, inspiring 160 new donors of

all ages. Two perpetual trophies were established as an award to be given at the GTOBA Annual Dinner - the ‘Class with the highest number of donors’ (top years were 2017, 1994 and 1987), and the ‘Class with Highest Amount Raised’ (top years were 1987, 1984 and 1994).

The Class of 1987 has established the inaugural Class Bursary (see page 28).

Mr Scott Gardner was determined to attend his 30-year reunion last year, travelling all the way from London. Scott and I discussed the various Terrace Foundation programs which have now initiated the first cohort bursary. Terrace is uniquely positioned as a school with a great history of education, opportunity and philanthropy since its inception in 1875. “The 1987 Class Bursary” concept is building on these special foundations.

Scott said: The purpose is simple: To have a lasting impact by raising $400 000 in capital to derive an income to fund a bursary. Eligibility for recipients is based on financial need. This is not a sporting or academic scholarship. We are leveraging the year group (including its friends and families) so eventually, there will be a boy at Terrace thanks to the generosity of the ‘87 cohort forever.

Fellow classmate Mr Jeremy Prentice, based in Brisbane, became involved early on, helping to develop a Memorandum of Understanding with the College and the Gregory Terrace Foundation.

Before long there was a group of ‘seed contributors’ joining Scott and Jeremy, including Dr Paul Tiernan, Mr David Denholm, Mr Anthony Leutenegger and Mr Joe Gallagher who collectively raised $85 000.

Contributions are tax deductible in Australia and the USA. Further discussions with the rest of the 1987 class have seen the total grow to $108 000 (some via our Giving Day - see page 27).

Jeremy said: This is about giving boys the chance to have the same opportunities we've had. It is something we can be proud of as a group, it is our legacy. Mr Joe Gallagher agreed: It’s an opportunity for the 1987 class to have

a significant impact on people less fortunate than ourselves and to give back to the College.

Past bursary recipients have contributed to society and have had a positive impact on the College and the learning experience of fellow students. It’s a two-way gift. The concept has also been contagious. Discussions have now begun amongst classmates of 1971, 1975, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1993 and 1995. Everyone who walks through the gates of St Joseph’s College is rewarded by a tradition of excellence. Similarly, Hyundai would like to reward all St Joseph’s College associates.
