MAIN STAG E INS TALL ATIONs
St. Louis 1 raised the theme “Level Up Education” for the 2019 Student Orientation Program. With hopes that in this new stage of education, first-year students are ready to face uprising challenges and constantly upgrade in terms of qualifications. As a member of the Decoration Division, I was in charge of the 3D projects and decorating the stage. Below is the sketched version of the main stage, above is the final result of our decoration.

MAIN STAGE INS TALL ATIONs The Decoration Committee decided to feature galaxy designs. In itself, the galaxy symbolizes hopes, aspirations, and desires for the future. The galaxy can also imply limitlessness. Our design conveys that soon, we hope the new students can unleash their limitless potential. The letters were made from cardboard and spray paint to make the galaxy pattern. The 2-meter tall 3D book was made using cardboard and glossy paper. The theme’s message was emphasized using our school mascot and the evident quote, “Knowledge is Key.” The wings were strategically placed on the sides of the 3D book to make it seem it had wings. The phrase “Fly High” is often associated with wings. Overall, the project means that with knowledge, we can fly as high as the galaxy to reach our dreams.
INAUGURA TI ON NI GHT INS TALL ATIONs For Inauguration Night’s stage, the most ambitious project was the 3-meter tall glowing owl. As seen beside, we made two layers of the same shape. The first layer was made out of wood with LED light strips attached and the second layer made out of a banner. We utilized the see-through character of the printed banner and by measuring the distance between 2 layers specifically, the light was projected successfully. Another set of 3D words equipped with LED light strips were also made, each letter around 1 meter tall. And to top it off, a dozen paper ornaments were placed to further enrich the dark stage.
COMPO SITION STUDY The goal of this piece was to further study the importance of an artwork’s balance and composition. I decided to make an artwork with a dynamic composition, focusing on creating flow and motion. I was inspired by the terracing method, often seen in Indonesia’s rice fields. Creating an uphill shape with curved lines, then experimenting with 3D shapes to top off the base. As I was stacking the 3D shapes, I realized I had made a huge mistake by focusing only from 1 point of view. I neglected that a piece should, preferably, be flexible and equally aesthatic if seen from other angles. Ultimately, I focused only from that sole perspective, which showcased my whole piece beautifully, and painted the piece with hints of green to complete the terracing look I was going for. I also drew the piece on A3 paper by directly observing it in real life. Adding another challenge, I shaded and added depth to the drawing without using the smudging method. It was a challenge to make the shadows as smooth as possible.

PAI NTING This piece is my attempt at recreating the Fallingwater house, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935. After doing some research, I figured out why this building design was and still is so controversial. The first reason being, the building's shape itself was very daring for it’s time, with its roof stretching long over its base. The second reason is that it breaks the stereotype that architectural buildings 'take up' nature's original habitat, still beautifully conserving the site's waterfall and nearby greenery. These reasons above prove that Frank Lloyd was way ahead of his time. In this era, other than creating a mere beautiful shape, sustainable architecture and protecting the environment is also crucial. Knowing these facts made the process of painting more amusing and meaningful. For the drawing itself, I freehanded the rought sketch using an HB pencil. Next, I used watercolor paint to give life to the sketch. And lastly went on to use pencil colors paint to achieve the final look.

PERSPE CTIVE DRAWING Perspective is an inseparable concept when talking about architecture. Through these two drawings, I deepened my understanding of drawing three-dimensional objects and shading. For the first drawing, I redrew my current bedroom using a one-point perspective method. I used a definite vanishing point since the area that I'm drawing is considerably small. Also, not forgetting to add some shading and texture like icing on a cake. For the second drawing, I eyeballed the whole building shape using a reference picture I took during my holiday a few years back. It was a new kind of challenge, figuring out where exactly the vanishing point would be. There were some times I had to erase and start over, and if seen closely, there are probably still some slight errors. But overall, I'm quite satisfied with the final result of my two-perspective drawing.

SKE TCH I first saw this beautiful arrangement of flowers standing on the edge of a hotel corridor. As I had nothing to do while stuck in a small hotel room in Jakarta, I knew I couldn’t waste the chance to draw its charming self. During the making of this illustration, I contemplated many times whether to trash this drawing or not. The main reason being my inability to finish the artwork as expected. I didn't face any prominent issues at the early stages of sketching but found myself struggling at the end of the process. I felt that the drawing was too dull and somewhat soulless. Later, I found out that the problem was that I missed a huge step which was adding texture. Once texture and highlight was added, it changed the whole painting. And I was reminded once again how important texture is to a drawing.

SKE TCH This piece is a black and white sketch that I made on an A3 art paper, switching between 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 drawing pens. This hand-drawn art was inspired by the street markets in Taiwan, reminiscing my visit in 2019. When I finished the drawing, I decided to scan and add a splash of color in Procreate. I tried different colors but ultimately chose yellow to embody the warm and lively vibes of Taiwan streets. This piece is called “Sunny Street.” which perfectly describes the final drawing.

ISOME TR IC DESI GN This isometric design is a visualization of an imaginary building I’ve had in mind ever since I was a kid. Until now, I still vividly remember every aspect of the house; The four pillars, spiraling stairs, numerous windows on each wall. I also used mostly monotone gray color. And the most important part is the observatory on top, as I used to like gazing the stars and night sky. Overall, the final product is quite similar to the picture I imagined in my head.

DIGI TAL DRAWING This drawing was made in Procreate, and one of the very first drawings I made using the application. The first subject in the drawing is the Airpod, a personal favorite item. Listening to music has always been a method I use to get out of an art block or whenever I require inspiration. The second subject, the keychain, contains some of my personal information, my homeland, my nickname, and my birthday. What started as mere fun and experimental sketch turned out to be one of my favorite projects. Both subjects have the same thing in common which is the word “Personal” hence this piece’s title.

APPAREL This design was made specifically for DBL, the largest junior high and high school basketball league competition in Indonesia. It was then printed and distributed among students of St. Louis 1 Senior High School in 2019. The design features the word “Metamorfoste”, from the word metamorphosis, which in itself means transformation and change. The red color further accentuates the illustration of our school mascot, the owl. The breaking free of the owl from the human body symbolizes freedom and liberty of our inner self.

Brandi ng This work was made for PT. Mitrapark Mandiri in 2020. The company wanted to launch a series of sanitizing products to fulfill the needs of hygiene products during the early outbreak of coronavirus. The name “ME Care” connotes that Mitrapak Eramandiri (shortened to ME) cares and wants to help consumers through the pandemic, where hygienic tools have become a primary need. The logo itself symbolizes earth and nature, using shades of green and blue. I only utilized lines to keep the logo clean but still sleek, per the company’s request. I also made the words “ME Care” using straight and curve-edged lines, playing with the color to make it have more depth and look more dynamic.
Pa cka ging The “ME Care” products were manufactured and sold in stores soon after. I designed the product’s packaging which consists of the Tea Tree Hand Sanitizer Gel, Melon Fresh Hand Sanitizer Gel, Unscented Hand Sanitizer Gel, and Disinfectant Spray. Besides designing the packaging, I also managed their mask design, where I made a simple illustration of the “Peace Lily” flower that symbolizes good luck and fortune.
CALE NDAR These designs were created for St. Louis 1 Senior High School’s official 2020 calendar, distributed to teachers, staff, and students. The illustration tells the story of an owl, the school’s mascot, and its journey as a high school student. The calendar starts with the owl’s arrival at school and ending the story with a graduation ceremony. Throughout the calendar, I wanted to show the typical student’s daily life at school. I illustrated the activities in a more fun and imaginative manner to make the storyline more interesting.
