Greg Gdowski, PhD University of Rochester RES President June 1, 2020 - May 31, 2022 Dear Fellow Engineers, It is that time of year again! If you are a student in the Rochester area, there are a number of $1,500 scholarships that are available. The RES also offers awards for professionals including the Engineer of the Year, Engineers of Distinction, and the Young Engineer of the Year. Applications are now being accepted for scholarships and professional awards! This is a great time to recognize a colleague for an award or recommend a student for a scholarship! If you have ever received an award or scholarship, you recognize how important this can be for professionals and young individuals.

All recipients will be recognized at the RES Gala in April! A short summary of scholarships is provided below! Check out page 7 for more information on the application process!

Wow! This month there are numerous technical articles in the Rochester Engineer that are extraordinarily interesting.

The cover story features a virtual system created by CPL and its Creative Labs Team that was designed to provide training for staff members that will be employed in new locations within the Rochester Regional Health System. The software allows healthcare staff members to navigate around via CPL’s virtual model of the facility to provide simulated training before a staff member enters the real facility. Also featured in this issue is paper from a PhD candidate from RIT (Manoj Meda) who describes a novel technique in metal additive manufacturing that has numerous applications in creating flexible electronics circuity.

Next month, we will feature Rochester-based Simulated Inanimate Models (SIM). They were recently awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award and $400,000 in Round 3 of the innovative Luminate NY Competition at NextCorps.

The Joseph W. Campbell and the Susan L. Costa Memorial Scholarships. Each of these scholarships recognizes the student who has both maintained academic excellence and been actively involved in extra-curricular and/or community activities.

The David Fergusson Scholarship was established to recognize his key efforts in the early development of the automobile.

Rochester History Continuing with the historical sampling of the earlier writings on behalf of the Rochester Engineering Society, the years following "The Great War", into and through the “Great Depression”, continued to be a time of reaching out for the maturing Society, both locally and nationally. The meeting minutes describe a series of technical discussions and presentations intended to broaden the technical horizons of the membership (especially the CE's, ME's and EE's). The RES affiliated itself with a number of National technical societies, adopted local Affiliated Societies, frequently held joint meetings with them and continued taking action on a growing list of public matters. Certain issues of standardization, some crucial to public safety, became the responsibility of the RES and its affiliates. In the pervasive economic downturn of the “Great Depression”, the magazine offered classified advertising for unemployed engineers, technicians and draftsmen and took other steps to try to deal with the crisis. Still, it continued its effort to shape the function, purpose and infrastructure of the City of Rochester, and beyond. World War, again affected the Society, taking away many of its leaders while providing opportunities for others to step forward to fill these vacancies. In an effort to provide even greater perspective on the happenings and concerns of the day, a synopsis, featuring selected items from "The Rochester Engineer" has become an integral part of this series. The Second World War and the Korean Conflict are now history, and the Vietnam War has recently become a focal point. These experiences have changed the face and, no doubt, the future of the community. The Rochester municipal leadership and the industrial community have become immersed in the cold-war, growth economy.

“The Rochester Engineer” (September 1972)

The announced September, season-opening, RES evening meeting featured a buffet dinner at the Rochester Training Academy, on Scottsville Road. Co-sponsored by the RES, ASCE, ASM, AIPE, CSI, CEC, MPES and the ASSE, this was followed by a fullscale demonstration by City Firemen, under the direction of Fire Commissioner John F. Hurley and Deputy Chief, William Pietsch. It was announced that RES President, Edwin Anthony, would deliver his inaugural address, “What’s Next for the RES?” at the season-opening, October 4th, RES luncheon meeting, at the Chamber of Commerce.

The Board approved five applications for Regular Membership. The Board entertained a motion that the RES endorse the November 7, 1972 passage of the Environmental Quality Bond Act. After much discussion among those present (four Board Members were absent), it was decided to put this important action before the entire Board. This resulted, subsequently, in a 13 to 4 passage of this resolution by the RES Board. Howard Beers of the RES Career Guidance Committee announced that the RES Explorer Post would begin activities with a meeting at Pfaudler Company, and that, having no resources of its own, there should be modest funding provided in the RES Budget.

The Education Committee reported that a mock trial on the topic of Product Safety would be held in conjunction with the Monroe County Bar Association, at Valley Echo. The Engineers’ Week Committee announced that Dr. Henry Diamond, NYS Commissioner of Environmental Conservation had been invited to be the February 22, 1973, event’s keynote speaker. RES Director, James D. Row, reported that recent attacks on the Operation RESOURCE Report at public meetings seemed to indicate that the report had not been thoroughly read and understood. Consequently, two groups had been formed to respond to these criticisms. George A. Hammond, reporting for the RES Civic Affairs Committee, announced that Edward Maybeck was working on updating the local building codes, RES Member Richard N. Blazey was serving on the Genesee Regional Health Planning Council, RES Member Victor F. Vinkey was representing the RES on a commission to revise the City of Rochester Zoning Ordinances and

In an article, “The Status of the City of Rochester vs. NYS Building Codes”, RES Building Codes Committee Chairman, Edward Maybeck, PE, reported that his committee had recommended that Rochester should retain its own building codes, and not adopt the State Building Code. The reason given for this recommendation included: maintenance of “home rule”, the Rochester Code is a good code, slowness of action by the NYS Codes Bureau, Rochester could amend its code to agree, in part with the NYS Building Code, where there is a conflict between the two. Announced recent additions to the RES Luncheon Series included: “The Mt. Morris Dam vs. Hurricane Agnes”, by Col. Robert L. Moore, District Engineer for US Army Corps. of Engineers, “Our Environment – What We’re Doing About Preserving It”, by Eric Seiffer, Regional Engineer for Environmental Quality and Howard F. Christensen, Monroe County Director of Solid Waste.

The Board approved applications for three Regular Members.

RES Luncheon Series Chairman, John Robertson, announced the completion of scheduling for the 1972-73 season, and the establishment of a “season ticket” for the eight luncheons, at $12.50 per person, for the entire series. RES Director James D. Row announced that a presentation on “Operation RESOURCE” had been schedule for the Monroe County Public Works Committee. Further, he stated that RES Member, William F. Kaiser, had been named Chairman of a special public relations committee charged with increasing public awareness and understanding of the “Operation RESOURCE” Report.

It was further stated that, “contacts with the press, or other public groups should be cleared through him and RES President Anthony, and that any public utterance of positions on behalf of the Society will be presented for Board approval, before issuance.” On behalf of the RES Education Committee, Chairman Roger Kober announced that RIT would be offering two evening courses; “Effective Reading” and “Reviewing Engineering Mathematics”. He also reported on RES Explorer Post activities, recommending that members of the Post receive complimentary copies of The Rochester Engineer, that past and future activities of the Post be regularly reported in the magazine, and that the Post members be invited, annually, to an RES meeting to receive certificates of participation. RES Director Roger Kober further reported that the RES Explorer Post Counselors and the Treasurer were assembling a list of expenses for submittal to the RES, toward establishing an annual budget line-item for the RES Explorer Post’s operation.

Subsequent articles in this series will describe the RES' continuing outreach to other technical societies as it considered its role in this and the larger community, along with more of the activities of the RES as it moved to be of greater service to its membership, especially those suffering from current economic crises, and adopted a greater role in shaping the future of the City and its environs. Noted also, will be the contributions made by RES members in the struggle to meet the challenges coming out of World War II and the Korean Conflict, as well as a period of post-war growth and prosperity. These articles will also feature an impressive array of RES activities in support of post-war re-emergence of Rochester area industry, and the ensuing prosperity of the second-half of the 20th Century.

Technical Corner Color Temperature Explained Introduction:

The advent and market penetration of LED light sources has introduced a new term with which many people are unfamiliar – Correlated Color Temperature (CCT, or sometimes simply “Color temperature”), which refers to the color of white light as it appears to the eye. This has many folks asking about color temperature and what it means, scratching their heads trying to understand the concepts. Questions like, “Why is a so-called warm white source a lower color temperature than a cool color source?” This seems to make no sense. We decided it would be worthwhile explaining color temperature in as close to layman’s terms as possible.

Color Temperature Basics:

All artificial lighting sources produce light in various wavelengths.

Imagine an Iron Bar (in lighting lingo, we call it a “black body radiator”). Put the bar in a furnace and heat it up. Measure the temperature of the bar in Kelvin degrees, not Fahrenheit or Celsius. As the bar heats up, it goes from a red to orange, to yellow, to blue. Most people know that blue flame is hotter than yellow flame, even though it looks “cooler” (think acetylene torch).

When the bar reaches 2700° Kelvin, it is glowing, and it looks like an incandescent light bulb (typical 60W like you’d have in a table lamp at home).

At 3000° K, it appears to look like a halogen light, or a warm white fluorescent light.

At 4000° K, it looks like a metal halide fixture (lights like you see in a gym or stadium, or warehouse type retail store.)

At 4100° K, it looks like a Cool White Fluorescent light (like what was common in offices and retail stores 1020 years ago, and still somewhat today.)

At 5000° K, it is starting to look very crisp white, with a tiny hint of blue. Many industrial sites are using 5000K LEDs for the crisp white and added worker alertness they seem to enhance. res - technical corner

At 6500° K, it is what we call “daylight” in the lighting business.

As it continues on to higher temperatures, the bar glows more and more blue.

Most people associate the color blue with “cool”, or cold. Think about blue ice, or the deep, dark blue cold depths of the ocean. Reds, oranges and yellow are associated with warmth. This is why even though a light source described as “warm white” actually is a lower color temperature than a source described as “cool white”.

The difference in CCT can have a tremendous impact on how a space looks and feels. For example, see the image of the stairwell. At first glance it appears the walls are painted two distinctly different colors. In fact, the wall is all the same color, but there are two different color temperature lamps at work. The difference is striking, and helps illustrate how important it is to select the appropriate color temperature for the space. RES News - Tutoring Team Education at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy, during the Pandemic…

With a “No Visitors” policy in place at all Rochester City Schools, the RES Tutoring Team will not be able to resume its good work at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy (RCSD School #10) (DWCA) in the foreseeable future.

The original plan for the Fall 2020 re-opening of #10 School was for a “Hybrid” protocol (two “cohorts” of students (“A” & “B”), each attending inperson two days a week and at home in a virtual learning environment, the other two days).

However, due to Covid-19 safety concerns for students, faculty and their respective families, this plan was changed, early last month, to one in which all learning, at all grade levels in the RCSD will be virtual, for the first ten weeks of this school year.

How many of these students have been "regularly" participating in the remote learning process?

We are only in week #1 of remote learning, so it is difficult to actually gauge what long term participation will look like. Also, we are still getting Chromebooks to some families that either had broken ones, or were unable to pick up one at School, for whatever reason. Over 70% of our Cooper Scholars have logged in during this first week. I anticipate that the numbers will change over the next couple of weeks, as we get into a routine.

How are you able to measure/confirm this participation?

So, for the next few(?) months, we will be presenting a series of articles on “Education at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy during the Pandemic”.

You may already know what’s happening in your own home school district, via your children and grandchildren, this series is intended to keep you enlightened and informed on what’s happening at “Our School” and also in the Rochester City School District.

At elementary school, teachers are using SeeSaw or Google Classroom and Zoom as their learning platforms. Most teachers require that students turn on their cameras at some point to actually view a student, and then students also turn in work electronically, so we also have that as a record.

Again, we are only in week #1. So, in a few weeks, I will be able to give you more consistent information.

On my way to gathering information for the first few articles in this series, I reached out to Dr. Lia Festenstein, the new Community School Site Coordinator at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy. She took time from her busy (first week of school) schedule to respond to several questions I posed on the #10 School student body, their access to the hardware & software necessary for virtual learning and the expectations for student participation in this “new” learning environment. My sincere thanks to Dr. Festenstein for these thoughtful responses…

Is there a follow-up process for ensuring that ALL DWCA students will eventually be able to participate in the remote learning process?

How many DWCA students have the necessary equipment, and internet access, to allow them to participate?

All K-6 students have been assigned a Chromebook. If they shared that they did not have internet access they were also provided a MiFi by the district. On 9/11/20, DWCA held a “Meet and Greet” for parents to stop by the school and pick up a “Learning Bag” for their student. Each Learning Bag contained the assigned computer if they did not already have one, a MiFi if requested, and materials prepared by their teachers for the first ten weeks of school. This varied by teacher and grade, but typically contained items like workbooks for the ELA program, math manipulatives, etc. Each set of parents came during their “assigned time” so that it was possible to remain socially distant, and the event was held outside in the parking lot.

We look at attendance every day, just as we did when we were here, inperson. Almost all students have their technology at this point, and there are just a few stragglers for whom we are personally delivering equipment to their homes. All students have access to a Chromebook, and if they have their own internet that’s great, but if not, we provide all students who need one with a MiFi device.

What have been some of the challenges for the students (who are actually connected) and for their teachers in making the remote learning process work?

There are so many challenges…

• Finding a quiet place to do school work, in a busy home.

• Not being distracted by your environment (for both kids and adults).

• Developing connections with each other, virtually.

• And, there are always technology issues (unstable internet, hiccups with different platforms, etc.).

These are issues that plague everyone in this virtual learning environment; they are not unique to Dr. Walter Cooper Academy, though they are a constant topic of conversation.

We continue to seek options for connecting with families and students, in ways that are meaningful, and still keep us all safe.

RES Scholarship Application Information The Rochester Engineering Society (RES) is an umbrella organization for engineering societies in the Rochester area. The goals of the society are: to advance the art and science of engineering for the general public welfare in Monroe County and the adjoining counties; to foster in practicing and prospective engineers excellence as professionals, as citizens, and as individuals; and, to promote communication and cooperation among all branches of engineering.

Multiple scholarships, sponsored by a variety of organizations and administered through the RES, are awarded annually ($1,500 each) to recognize outstanding engineering, engineering technology, science or technology students. These are merit-based scholarships. Scholarships from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) require applicants be student members of their respective organization. Please visit our website at www.roceng.org to find out more on the individual scholarships available. Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following qualifications: 1. Be an undergraduate student in good standing who has completed two years/or achieved Junior standing in an ABET-accredited engineering, engineering technology, science or technology program.

2. Have an overall grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0 (or equivalent) or better.

3. Plan to continue engineering, engineering technology, science or technology studies in an undergraduate ABET accredited program in September 2021. Scholarship recipients will be individually notified by February 1, 2021, announced at the RES Gala on April 17, 2021 and funds will be mailed ~August 1, 2021.

4. Be a resident of Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Wayne, or Wyoming Counties of New York or enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering, engineering technology, science or technology curriculum in a college in those counties. The Rochester Chapter of IEEE allows applicants from Corning and Alfred sub-chapters.

5. Not be a previous recipient of this scholarship.

Application: Applicants must submit the six required items listed below. All items must be submitted together. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all the necessary data are submitted by the deadline in one package and will be immediately disqualified from judging, with no further follow-up, if these instructions are not followed. The applicant should notify those persons supplying reference letters that timely response is critical.

Reference letters may be submitted in individually sealed envelopes within the application package or emailed directly to RES with the applicant's name in the subject line.. Virtual Training for New Healthcare Facilities

by Vince Press, former Director of Communications Training staff for the opening a new facility can be extremely difficult, especially during a pandemic. The traditional method of onsite workflow planning is immensely limited at this time. CPL and its Creative Labs Team were recently commissioned by the Rochester Regional Health System to develop a fully interactive, virtual training model for front line workers to become familiar with their new spaces in the Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care tower in Rochester, NY. Because of COVID-19 restrictions as well as expedited construction activity, access to the building had been restricted, however, familiarization to the space remained crucial prior to its opening in September.

Why is acclimation to the space so important?

From knowing where critical supplies and equipment are located, to staff wayfinding, to optimizing patient throughput, this tool is incredibly significant, especially in a new facility where the individual units themselves are approximately three times larger than their existing space at Rochester General Hospital.

Ironically, the 7-story, 312,000-square-foot tower was designed and planned well before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the design is the exact kind of modern healthcare facility that health systems across the globe will now be looking to build. With characteristics like acuity adaptable patient rooms, this stateof-the-art facility will aid in providing care for a variety of patient types. And with ample flex and surge spaces, the facility is also prepared for a future pandemic surge.

In total, 48 program locations were programmed into the virtual model including locations in the NICU, Operating Room Suite, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Postpartum Care Unit, and a standard patient floor.

You Will be Judged

As most readers of my article know, I am a self-professed “word nerd” and I often suggest that your writing creates an image of you, your firm, and your content. The following is a reprint of a fairly controversial article circulating on the web. I first found it in the Harvard Business Review and if you search for it you’ll see it is often referenced. As we find ourselves working remotely, our writing and communication skills become more important and more visible.

For the record, I agree with much of what Mr. Wiens says, although surprisingly, he is even more militant about grammar than I am. RGI’s technical communication consulting and training divisions are busier than ever and I suspect it is because owners and managers of professional services organizations have seen enough. We are what we communicate.

I Won't Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here's Why.

by Kyle Wiens If you think an apostrophe was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, you will never work for me. If you think a semicolon is a regular colon with an identity crisis, I will not hire you. If you scatter commas into a sentence with all the discrimination of a shotgun, you might make it to the foyer before we politely escort you from the building.

Some might call my approach to grammar extreme, but I prefer Lynne Truss's more cuddly phraseology: I am a grammar "stickler." And, like Truss — author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves — I have a "zero tolerance approach" to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.

Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have "zero tolerance."

She thinks that people who mix up their itses "deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave," while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job — even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.

Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a mandatory grammar test. Extenuating circumstances aside (dyslexia, English language learners, etc.), if job hopefuls can't distinguish between "to" and "too," their applications go into the bin.

Of course, we write for a living. iFixit.com is the world's largest online repair manual, and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it makes sense that we've made a preemptive strike against groan-worthy grammar errors.

But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn't make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the internet. In blog posts, on Facebook statuses, in e-mails, and on company websites, your words are all you have. They are a projection of you in your physical absence. And, for better or worse, people judge you if you can't tell the difference between their, there, and they're.

Good grammar makes good business sense — and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn't in the official job description of most people in our office. Still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers.

On the face of it, my zero tolerance approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair. After all, grammar has nothing to do with job performance, or creativity, or intelligence, right?

Wrong. If it takes someone more than 20 years to notice how to properly use "it's," then that's not a learning curve I'm comfortable with. So, even in this hyper-competitive market, I will pass on a great programmer who cannot write.

Grammar signifies more than just a person's ability to remember high school English. I've found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing — like stocking shelves or labeling parts.

In the same vein, programmers who pay attention to how they construct written language also tend to pay a lot more attention to how they code.

You see, at its core, code is prose. Great programmers are more than just code monkeys; according to Stanford programming legend Donald Knuth they are "essayists who work with traditional aesthetic and literary forms." The point: programming should be easily understood by real human beings — not just computers.

And just like good writing and good grammar, when it comes to programming, the devil's in the details. In fact, when it comes to my whole business, details are everything.

I hire people who care about those details. Applicants who don't think writing is important are likely to think lots of other (important) things also aren't important. And I guarantee that even if other companies aren't issuing grammar tests, they pay attention to sloppy mistakes on résumés. After all, sloppy is as sloppy does.

That's why I grammar test people who walk in the door looking for a job.

Grammar is my litmus test. All applicants say they're detail-oriented; I just make my employees prove it.

get IT done Zero Trust

But security is especially important in a work world where so many of us are connected remotely to our networks, and the cyber criminals, who are bent on gaining access to your data and files, are working , non-stop, every day, every hour and every minute. You would think they’d get a real job!

In the earlier days of cyber security, our efforts generally mirrored physical security. Got a door? Get a lock. Got a window? Get some bars. Got intruders? Get intrusion detection. Need to stop them before they get in? Get a firewall.

The bad news it isn’t working well enough. We have firewalls and passwords and multiple other measures, and we are still woefully behind the international cybercriminal juggernaut. We need a sheriff. Luckily, there is a new sheriff in town and the name is Zero Trust.

The new sheriff brings new rules. Rule #1. Trust no one.

Any time there is a request of the network, this sheriff works on the assumption that there has been a breach.

It questions everyone and everything. All the time.

Reminds me of my dad.

Here are the guiding principles of Zero Trust per a Microsoft White Paper: 1) Verify explicitly. Always authenticate and authorize based on all available data points, including user identity, location, device health, service or workload, data classification, and anomalies.

2) Use least privileges access. Limit user access with Just-In Time and Just-Enough-Access, risk-based adaptive policies, and data protection to protect both data and productivity.

3) Assume breach. Minimize blast radius for breaches and prevent lateral movement by segmenting access by network, user, devices, and application awareness. Verify all sessions are encrypted end to end. Use analytics to get visibility, drive threat detection, and improve defenses.

Phew. See what I mean? But it makes sense doesn’t it? If we assume that every transaction has evil intent and act from that parameter our chances of stopping the barbarians at the gate go up considerably. I’ll remind myself that we need more than ‘considerably’, we need 100% containment and perhaps this is the only way to get there.

Has your business been asked to verify its security practices as a third-party vendor? More and more enterprises are requiring not only liability insurance but cyber-insurance as the price or entry to receive RFPs. Along with cyber insurance they want to see your cyber security policies and your methodology for mitigating risk. These practices will be a barrier to some and a positive differentiator for others.

Here are some minimal considerations: Schedule a security audit. With remote users your exposure goes up considerably. Is their wi-fi secure? Is their anti-virus software and firewall up to date? Here’s something no one asks. Are there bad actors potentially in the household? Two-factor authentication becomes a must. Also keep in mind that remote worker households have no uniformity. Are there other devices to consider that are non-company assets? A VPN (virtual private network) is almost a necessity in many remote worker situations.

Next, look at active threat monitoring. Active threat monitoring enables your audit team to have a continuous view into the activities employees are completing on the network. Micro segmentation of these activities is part of Zero Trust and key to determining future threats and weaknesses and reducing any potential damages. Once the audit is complete and remedies are taken, schedule the next audit. Security is not a one and done situation.

Ultimately, Zero Trust may be the way to go, but it is likely a phased approach that may require major organizational changes. So… Think About IT

WHAT IS THE ILLUMINATING ENGINEERING SOCIETY? Just about every project has some sort of lighting involved in one way or another, including both electric light and natural daylight. From the simple strip light in a storage closet, to an intricate facility incorporating open office, private offices, reception, recreation spaces and such.

Lighting applications do not simply stop at the building’s shell, many of the most intricate and aesthetically pleasing lighting designs are executed on the exterior of a facility.

Exterior lighting projects can vary from small parking lots with one pole, to large multi-level parking structures, outdoor recreation promenades or sports facilities. As you can see, lighting plays a very integral role in our lives including; the homes we live in, the offices we work in and the roads we drive on.

All of these projects have a various set of requirements that need to be considered when it comes to the lighting design. You need to consider the tasks being performed.

Is it a general open office space with workstations? Or is it an industrial facility where fine tasks are being completed?

Is it a surgical procedure space? Or simply a storage warehouse? Perhaps it is a sports facility accommodating youth, college or pro level athletes. All of these applications have very different lighting requirements.

The most important consideration is who will be occupying these spaces. Younger occupants tend to require less illumination than older individuals. You would light a high school classroom very differently than you would light a senior living facility. Providing the right illumination levels to suit those who inhabit the space is crucial in the art of lighting design.

Where do these guidelines and recommended practices come from? Who decides what the ‘right’ way to light a space is? That entity would be The Illuminating Engineering Society.

Established in 1906, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) is the recognized technical and educational authority on illumination. For over 100 years its objective has been to communicate information on all aspects of good lighting practice to its members, the lighting community, and consumers through a variety of programs, publications, and services. The strength of the IES is its diversified membership including: engineers, architects, designers, educators, students, contractors, distributors, utility personnel, manufacturers, and scientists, all contributing to the mission of the Society: to improve the lighted environment by bringing together those with lighting knowledge and by translating that knowledge into actions that benefit the public.

The IES is a forum for the exchange of ideas and information and a vehicle for its members’ professional development and recognition. Through its technical committees, with hundreds of qualified members from the lighting and user communities, the IES correlates research, investigations, and discussions to guide lighting experts and laypersons via research and consensus-based lighting recommendations.

Lighting Standards The IES is an accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) under American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved procedures. The Society publishes nearly 100 varied publications including recommended practices on a variety of applications, design guides, technical memoranda, and publications on energy management and lighting measurement, many of which follow the ANSI standards development process. The IES also publishes the most important reference document in the lighting profession, The Lighting Handbook. It is the industry’s principal source for lighting knowledge. The IES, in addition, works cooperatively with related organizations on the development of programs and jointly published documents and standards.

Lighting Calculations The aforementioned Lighting Handbook is a vital tool when it comes to lighting design and calculations. When analyzing a particular space, the lighting designer must determine suitable illumination levels for the task being performed. The most recognized, and common unit of measure used by lighting professionals in order to calculate light levels is the footcandle (fc). A footcandle is defined as the “illuminance on a one square foot surface from a uniform source of light.” The Lighting Handbook is responsible for determining the recommended fc levels that should be present in a space. Shown in the figures on page 15 are a few examples of lighting calculations being performed.

Periodicals and Publications In addition, the IES publishes Lighting Design + Application (LD+A) and LEUKOS, Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society. LD+A is a popular, award-winning, application-oriented monthly magazine. Every issue contains special feature

articles and news of practical and innovative lighting designs, systems, equipment and economics, as well as news of the industry. LEUKOS publishes peer-reviewed articles that report research results, engineering developments, technical aspects of lighting applications, tutorials, and critical reviews.

Many IES publications are available as complimentary downloads (such as the IES/IDA Model Lighting Ordinance for outdoor lighting or the Advanced Energy Design Guides, jointly produced by the IES along with the AIA, ASHRAE, USGBC, and the US DOE), providing a resource for keeping up to date with the latest practices and standards.

Education The broad range of IES educational offerings serves both the general public as well as working professionals in the lighting field. The IES supplies educational offerings that offer IES CEUs (Continuing Education Units) that are accepted by the NCQLP (National Council on Qualification of Lighting Professions) as well as other professional organizations.

Also, as an accredited Continuing Education provider with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the U.S. Green Buildings Council (USGBC), IES continually seeks to update its education programs and where relevant, issues certificates of continuing education credits to program participants.

Through a strong networking process, IES supports lighting education outreach offered by our 96 local IES Sections in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Those in the lighting industry can avail themselves of courses on a range of levels, from a basic lighting course (Fundamentals of Lighting – 10 modules) to Intermediate Lighting and ongoing advanced Applications Seminars. New content, courses and ways of delivering IES education are under development, from introductory pre-Fundamentals to advanced level seminar courses.

IES – Rochester, NY Section Locally, the IES is represented by the Rochester, NY section. The board of directors is comprised of local engineers, manufacturers, designers, electrical distributors and manufacturer’s representatives.

They meet once a month with the purpose of creating opportunities for the community at large to learn and understand the latest in lighting and lighting control technology and how to properly apply those technologies.

Droplet based metal additive manufacturing process as a cost-effective technique for fabrication of high-performance flexible electronics

By Manoj Meda The world has witnessed three industrial revolutions in the last 300 years resulting in a tectonic shift in the way in which we live. Among them the third and most recent is the digital revolution, that began in the 1950’s, which brought electronic devices, semiconductors, mainframe/personal computing, and the internet. The advent of electronic devices led to disruption of all the vital avenues of the global economy such as healthcare, energy, transportation, communication etc. The key driver for ubiquity of electronic devices around us, can be attributed to the advancements in manufacturing processes such as photolithography, which enabled manufacturing of more powerful, smaller, and affordable integrated circuits in every iteration.

We are currently at the dawn of the 4th industrial revolution, which is poised to disrupt and profoundly transform the electronics landscape with the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT can be described as a network of diverse physical devices embedded with electronics, that can connect, collect, and exchange data in real time. This would integrate the physical world into the digital world and result in significant increase in productivity, incremental economic benefits, and reduced human efforts. One of the key drivers for IoT would be the light weight and extremely cost-effective flexible electronic devices. The flexible nature of these devices will make them very well suited to be used in numerous areas where the current rigid electronics cannot be employed.

Flexible electronics, with intriguing properties such as softness and ductility have broad application prospects such as intelligent packaging, low cost RFID (radio-frequency identification) transponders, flexible displays, flexible solar cells, flexible batteries, disposable diagnostic/monitoring devices etc. In addition to that the substrates used for flexible electronics - such as polymers or paper - tend to be significantly cheaper than the widely used rigid substrates such as silicon wafers or glass. makes these devices considerably cheaper.

Additive manufacturing processes such as materialsbased inkjet printing techniques are currently being employed for fabricating flexible electronic circuitry.

These techniques are typically employed to deposit metal nanoparticles suspended in suitable solvents – referred to as metal-based inks - onto flexible polymer substrates, in a precise manor to form the electrical circuits. Figure 1 shows an RFID tag and some electrodes printed using a copper nano particle ink onto polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate.

However, this approach poses three major limitations.

First, the printed features typically require post processing techniques - such as thermal sintering wherein they are subjected to elevated temperature to render them electrically conductive. Second, the cost of the raw materials i.e. the nanoparticles tend to be about 2 orders of magnitude higher than the cost of the actual metal - thereby driving the final product cost upwards. Third, the printed features generally tend to have lower electrical conductivity than the metals that are used as the raw material.

We studied the direct deposition of molten metal droplets onto high performance polymer substrates, as a way of addressing the major limitations with the current approaches. As illustrated in Figure 2, droplets of molten aluminum alloy 4043 were deposited through a magneto hydrodynamic metal jetting process - manufactured by Xerox Corporation, Rochester, NY, USA - onto a flexible polyimide substrate for the purpose of fabricating electronic feature student article

circuits. By optimizing the process conditions – such as overlap percentage between adjacent droplets, deposition frequency, temperature of the droplet, temperature of the substrate etc. – through experimental studies and numerical modelling, we demonstrated that high temperature (~8500C) molten metal droplets can be successfully deposited onto polymer substrates for the purpose of fabricating flexible electronics.

As metal droplets solidify on the polymer substrate, they inherently become highly electrically conductive without the need for any post processing. The raw material used in this process is in the form of wire.

The aluminum wire is about 2 orders of magnitude cheaper by weight than aluminum nanoparticles. This makes the process significantly cheaper than the conventional approach for printing electronic circuits through solvent based metal nanoparticle inks.

Most importantly this approach enables achieving bulk metal electrical conductivity which is extremely difficult to achieve through metal-based inks.

Figure 3 shows circuits printed onto polyimide substrate through the magneto hydrodynamic metal jetting process using aluminum 4043 alloy. The printed features demonstrate excellent adhesion and surface roughness comparable to printed circuit boards currently being used in the industry.

Through our research we have demonstrated that molten metal jetting process is a viable technique for fabricating highly electrically conductive circuits onto flexible polymer substrates. Further research is needed in terms of improving the feature resolution of printed features – which currently stands at ~200μm. Extending the research to studying the deposition of widely used metals such as copper onto cheaper substrates such as PET could enable low cost manufacturing of flexible electronic circuits for numerous applications in the IoT.

Exploring Millimeter-Wave Interconnect for Chip-to-Chip Communication

By M. Meraj Ahmed With aggressive scaling of device geometries, yield of complex Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chips (MP-SoCs) will decrease due to higher probability of manufacturing defects. Disintegration of large SoCs into smaller chips called chiplets will improve yield and cost of complex platform-based systems. AMD’s EPYC which was released in 2017, is an example of such multichip system having 4 chiplets. However, performance of multichip systems is limited by the off-chip I/Os as they provide high power and latency overheads. On the other hand, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless interconnects can establish single hop communication between multiple chips to provide high speed and energy-efficient communication. Fig. 1 conceptualize such multichip communication. Here, we briefly discuss the architecture and how to leverage mm-wave interconnect for multichip communication.

System and Wireless Interface (WI) Architecture: We consider a tile-based multicore-multichip (MCMC) architecture typically used in high performance computing nodes such as server blades. Each tile in the MCMC system is composed of a processing core, a switch, L1 private cache and a distributed shared last level cache (LLC). Tiles in each chip are connected with each other through a regular wired mesh-based Network-on Chip (NoC). For inter-chip communication, in each chip, we equip some or all the NoC switches with WIs as shown in Fig. 1. A WI can have both Transmitter (Tx) and Receiver (Rx) circuitry or can have only Rx circuitry. We call such WI as TR-WI and R-WI respectively and shown in Fig. 1. The Tx used in a WI typically consists of Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO), modulator, Drive Amplifier (DA) while the Rx circuitry includes Low Noise Amplifier (LNA), Envelop Detector (ED) and Baseband Amplifier as shown in Fig. 2. As modulation technique On-Off Keying (OOK) along with a zig-zag antenna have been chosen due to their low implementation overhead.

Enhancing Multicast-Broadcast Performance for on and off-chip Communication: In MCMC system with an in-package memory module as shown in Fig. 1, traffic pattern not only consists of core to core unicast (one-to-one) messages but also significant memory to core multicast/broadcast (one-to-many) messages. Directory or snooping based cache coherency protocols in a shared memory MCMC system use multicast to invalidate a shared cache block or broadcast the updated block for the requesting cores. Moreover, many control signals such as passing global states, power gating, and barrier synchronization, novel computing paradigms such as spiking neural network and genetic algorithms could be also multicast driven. Traditional wired based MCMC architectures are multi-hop in nature and provide very limited support for multicast/broadcast traffic whereas mm-wave interconnects provide inherent multicast/broadcast support to provide low latency and energy for such messages. Simulation results in Fig. 3 show that the mm-wave interconnect outperforms wired interconnect in terms of average latency and energy consumption for various application specific traffic patterns.

Reducing Test Time for Complex SoCs: Wafer-level testing presents huge challenges to high fault-coverage due to severely restricted controllability and observability, especially for complex SoCs or multicore processors. Traditionally wafer-level testing is restricted to basic tests using probes. The probe needles come in physical contact with the wafer and can cause damage to the wafer due to the stress applied by the probes. On-chip mm-wave transceivers can receive test data from an external equipment such as an Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) which will also be equipped with a wireless transceiver to send and receive test data and response respectively. This wireless test mechanism is shown in Fig. 4. Depending on the speed of the chosen physical and control layer efficiency, test data can be delivered at high rates to uncut dies in the wafer without requiring physical contact.

Campus News Orlando Ortiz ’04 (manufacturing engineering technology), ’08 (MBA) has been appointed RIT’s 2020-2021 Frederick H. Minett Professor.

Rochester Institute of Technology’s newest Frederick H. Minett Professor is an engaged alumnus, successful professional in the manufacturing industry, and highly active community volunteer. Orlando Ortiz ’04 (manufacturing engineering technology), ’08 (MBA) is the 29th person appointed to the prestigious position, established in 1991.

The Minett Professorship brings distinguished Rochester-area multicultural professionals to RIT to share their professional knowledge and experience with RIT’s students, faculty, and staff for one academic year. The professorship emphasizes the connections between education and industry, and also highlights the value of diversity.

Minett Professors are selected by the Minett Professors Emeritus, then appointed

by RIT President David Munson and Keith Jenkins, RIT’s vice president and associate provost for Diversity and Inclusion.

“We are delighted to welcome such an accomplished and active alumnus to serve in this role,” said Jenkins.

“Orlando Ortiz continually gives back to the RIT community, and we are excited to have him in this capacity where he will be able to expand on that close relationship even further.”

Ortiz has worked in the manufacturing industry since 1998 and has served as a manufacturing manager with The Gleason Works for the past seven years. As an RIT student, he became heavily involved in community service and many clubs and organizations on campus. While at RIT, he joined Latino America Unida, Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity Inc. and currently serves as the alumni advisor to the local chapter. Through the fraternity, he began volunteering for the Puerto Rican Festival, and has now served as a board member for 15 years as its volunteer coordinator, treasurer, and for the past 11 years, as its president. He also serves on the board of Foodlink, as board chair of The Housing Council, vice-chair of the board for Pathstone, and as secretary on the board of the RIT Alumni Association. In 2019, Ortiz was named Hispanic Businessperson of the year by the Rochester Hispanic Business Association.

Ortiz said that he has several initiatives he wants to focus on as Minett Professor, including strengthening RIT’s ties to the nonprofit organizations he is involved with, such as Foodlink and PathStone. He also wants to use his experience in the manufacturing industry to expose more underrepresented minority students to career opportunities in the field, encourage student involvement in clubs and organizations, and increase the Rochester community’s awareness of the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars program. Ortiz was part of the RIT Strategic Plan steering committee in 2014 and said he sees joining the ranks of the Minett Professors gives him a unique opportunity to help see that plan through.

“It’s an honor to be a part of this group,” said Ortiz. “As an RIT alum, it’s even more gratifying for me because it presents another opportunity for me to connect the various ‘hats’ I wear daily. I want to make sure I move the needle and leave my mark not only on the strategic plan creation, but now actually being a part of executing it and making an impact with students. It’s nice to come full circle.”

Ortiz succeeds longtime Urban League of Rochester leader William Clark, who served as Minett Professor from 2019-2020. Others who have served in the position include many of Rochester’s most prominent business, academic, medical, and law enforcement professionals.

The professorship is named after one of RIT’s early benefactors, Frederick Minett, who started a tool and die company on Water Street in downtown Rochester in the early 1920s. He was familiar with RIT, formerly called the Mechanics Institute, and employed some students. Minett died in 1971, leaving more than $5 million endowment to RIT. Originally divided between RIT’s College of Continuing Education and the general endowment, the bequest was intended to support Minett’s and RIT’s vision of career education. q 22 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER OCTOBER 2020

RIT faculty-researcher Iris Rivero awarded ELATES Fellowship for 2020-21 ISE department head begins national, yearlong leadership program for female faculty-researchers Iris Rivero, professor and head of RIT’s industrial and systems engineering department, shown here in a file photo from February 2019, was recently named an ELATES Fellow and will participate in a yearlong executive leadership program.

RIT engineering professor Iris Rivero will be part of the newest class of the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology, Engineering and Science, also known as ELATES. The national program based at Drexel University is intended to prepare senior women faculty into leadership roles within their respective institutions.

Rivero, department head of the industrial and systems engineering (ISE) department in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, will be among 30 female professors from U.S. universities participating in the prestigious yearlong program. The online and onsite program is designed to increase personal and professional leadership effectiveness and develop knowledge of organizational dynamics, finance, and strategic management of participants’ colleges and universities.

Throughout the year, the participants will be required to do an institutional-focused project with either the provost of their respective institutions or dean of their college department. Rivero will concentrate on improvements to the ISE department and engineering college’s K-12 outreach in an effort to recruit and retain an even more diverse student body. She will also seek more opportunities for faculty professional development including increasing cross-college research collaborations, interdisciplinary course development, and accessibility initiatives.

“I believe that you have to be continually seeking professional development, but what I also think is important and what this opportunity might give me, is an understanding of how to navigate making changes to the profession,” said Rivero, who joined RIT in 2018, and who is an expert in 3D-printing and its application to develop and manufacture biomedical devices. “Can we push the engineering profession into looking at new directions and new ways of thinking? ELATES might provide me with the tools and the platform to help me initiate something of that magnitude, that big-picture thinking.”

“I am thrilled that Dr. Rivero is participating in the ELATES program. This is an opportunity for her that will also benefit the engineering college and RIT,” said Doreen Edwards, dean of RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, and one of Rivero’s sponsors for the program. “I look forward to working with her on the projects she has proposed.”

The 2020-21 group met informally this summer online and will continue networking, workshops, and training in that format until such time as onsite meetings are allowed due to the pandemic.

Campus News Team develops model to determine stability of gas hydrates Comprehensive model can better predict how gas hydrates and methane stabilization could ease global warming

Department of Energy This Department of Energy map shows locations where gas hydrates have been discovered, where gas hydrates is inferred to be present on the basis of seismic data, and where drilling expeditions have been completed in permafrost or deep marine environments, all leading to recovery of gas hydrates.

Natural gas-hydrates—crystalline compounds of gas molecules—are found in permafrost and marine sediments.

While these gas hydrates can be used as alternative energy resources, they also pose a danger in terms of global warming, if catastrophic release of gas into the atmosphere was to take place.

Patricia Taboada-Serrano and Yali Zhang, researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology, developed a comprehensive model to better validate location of gas-hydrate deposits in marine sediments. This information can be used to assess stability of the deposits, and the model can also provide predictive information about destabilization of those deposits due to variations in temperature.

The new model could benefit scientists who measure global climate patterns because they have an available model that predicts the stability of gas-hydrates more accurately. Some of the energy stored in these compounds is larger than the world-wide conventional natural gas reserves combined, said Zhang.

“The petroleum crisis could be successfully avoided if we can exploit most of the natural gas from gas-hydrate reservoirs in a safe manner, without contributing to global warming,” said Zhang, a researcher in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. “Natural gas is considered clean energy, and huge amounts of natural gas are trapped in gas-hydrates. This clean energy is not only attractive to exploit but also a risk to global warming—methane is a potent greenhouse gas. A given volume of methane causes about 28 times more greenhouse gas warming than carbon dioxide.”

The researchers’ findings were published in the paper, “Model for gas-hydrate equilibrium in porous media that incorporates pore-wall properties.” It was recognized recently as a 2020 HOT Paper by the Royal Society of Chemistry and reprinted in a special edition highlighting highly-contributing scientific papers during the year.

Information about the size and gas-content of gas-hydrate reservoirs has been limited in the past. Natural gas-hydrates are found in geographically diverse settings around the globe, either in marine sediments or permafrost environments, some inaccessible because of harsh conditions and the need for equipment that can safely extract specimens. The researchers’ model can be used to better predict deposit structure, properties, and reliability.

“The goal of the work was to develop a predictive model that would be more precise than previous models, and that can be used to truly estimate how much gas is stored in these natural gas-hydrate deposits and how stable these deposits are.

Furthermore, we aimed to having the capability to predict what would happen with these deposits if the temperature of the oceans is raised even a little bit, and the pressure changes due to changes of the water levels,” said Taboada-Serrano, an associate professor of chemical engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

The U.S. Department of Energy has been leading exploration and research initiatives into the use of gas-hydrates as a possible alternative energy solution when it was discovered that the total amount of natural gas stored in naturally occurring hydrates is larger than the worldwide conventional natural-gas reserves combined.

“Over the years, people have developed models to try to predict how large these deposits are these ocean sediments. We are seeing ocean temperatures slowly creep up and polar caps melt and reduce in size. This means that we are basically getting to temperatures in which gas-hydrate deposits destabilize. The temperature is becoming high enough to start releasing methane and it may end up in the atmosphere,” said Taboada-Serrano.

Gas-hydrates are structures trapped in sediment, often 1,500 meters below sea level, dormant underneath the polar ice caps, permafrost, and in marine sediments. Challenges include finding and accessing reservoirs in some of the Earth’s inhospitable areas such as the Arctic and developing technologies to verify the stability of the reservoirs and safely enable extractions. Access to these areas is often limited to diving expeditions or coring samples from drilling.

These structures are also stable under very specific windows of temperature and pressure. But if the temperature of the ocean rises a little bit, these ice-like structures are going to start to dissolve and start releasing methane into the atmosphere.

“The models developed can be used to predict the equilibrium conditions, specifically, temperature and pressure, kinetic nucleation rate and formation probability of gas hydrates by incorporating sediment properties such as wettability and interfacial energies,” said Zhang, who recently completed her doctoral dissertation in this area under the supervision of Taboada-Serrano. “It is very useful in the sense that many realistic sediment conditions are captured by the model and the model predictions agree with available experimental data very well. Looking forward, I think the model will be widely used by the researchers both in academics and energy industry.” q campus news

APWA Announces Inaugural Scholarship Winners The Genesee Valley Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) would like to congratulate the two recipients of the inaugural Scholarship Award. The Genesee Valley branch of the APWA seeks to encourage students to consider a career in Civil Engineering, Urban/Regional Planning or in the Public Works Profession/Trade by providing partial financial support for tuition and fees to a student who has and/or will be enrolling into an accredited College or University or an accredited Trade School Training/Apprenticeship Program. The recipients for the 2020 Scholarship Awards are as follows:

Joshua Weis

Joshua is a graduate of Batavia High School who has been accepted into the Alfred State College Construction Management program. Joshua is an avid sports enthusiast who hopes to apply the skills that he will learn in the Construction Management program at Alfred to design and construct sports fields for other kids who share the same passion of sports. Joshua comes well recommended for his hard-working attitude and desire to excel in sports and academics.

Auburn Schwartzmeyer

Auburn is a graduate of Byron-Bergen High School who has been accepted into the University at Buffalo Class of 2024 for Civil Engineering. Auburn’s enjoyment of physics and mathematics led her to consider a career in engineering. After taking an Architecture class her senior year in High School, she decided that Civil Engineering was the way to go. Auburn comes well recommended for her enthusiasm for learning and intrinsic motivation. Auburn is a wellrounded individual who took on the responsibility of being the Senior Class President while also getting involved with cheerleading, Young Life, and the Outdoor Adventure Club.

Life continues to be via Webinar it seems. Our September meeting had to be by webinar and our October Factory tour at Liberty will have to be postponed until COVID restrictions are lifted.

In the meantime, please pencil in 3rd Wednesday’s for October, November and December for ASPE Webinar’s. 10/21, 11/18, 12/16. We will continue to try to offer presentations that will be applicable for NYS PE PDH credits. The rules for that are evolving, but we will do our due diligence to meet all current requirements.

The 2020 Engineering Symposium has been re-scheduled for Thursday, April 29, 2021. If you have already registered for the event, you don’t have to do anything - you will be advance registered and paid for the event in April. Message from Incoming MPES President

I am honored to serve as president of the Monroe PE Society for the next two years. Our organization promotes engineering in many ways. It strives to support engineers’ rights and offers continuing education. I hope to continue to evolve and grow our organization in this manner. During these unprecedented times, our monthly board of directors’ meetings will be held online, where we will continue to develop, improve, and support our programs such as Mathcounts, TEAMS, and the Engineering Symposium in Rochester.

I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from RIT. During my time at RIT, I co-oped at several local civil engineering firms. After graduation I joined Costich Engineering, Land Surveying and Landscape Architecture, a family firm that my grandfather started in 1977. I have since become the Vice President and a 3rd generation family business owner.

I want to thank the current MPES board of directors for their help and guidance. Since becoming a part of this board, I have been welcomed and was immediately made to feel included in the organization. I look forward to continuing to work with the board of directors to grow our organization and to support local engineers.

Unfortunately, the 2020 Western NY Image & Signal Processing Workshop (WNYISPW) is canceled. We hope to relaunch the WNYISPW in 2021.

October 6 th is IEEE day and we will celebrate it virtually during the EX-COM meeting.

IEEE Student Membership The IEEE Rochester Section is committed to helping Electrical Engineering students establish their professional identities as part of the broader community involved in the study and practice of engineering. In any academic program, it is easy to see oneself as an individual fulfilling the requirements of assignments, courses, and course sequences, but not as someone becoming a member of a larger community of people with shared practices, values, and a history shaped by milestones of technological invention. Seeing oneself as part of a broader community is to see the significance and possibility that comes from contributing to that community and how those contributions can, in turn, impact everyday life.

The IEEE is a global organization offering continuing education, technical societies and publications in Computer Engineering, Bioengineering, Robotics, Sustainability, and a great many other areas. It offers participation in affinity groups such as Young Professionals and Women in Engineering. It also offers career development services, resume help, as well as mentoring, and professional networking.

We encourage Electrical Engineering students to join the IEEE as student members ($16) and within the limitations requiring COVID-safe social gatherings, to host social and learning events.

The Rochester Section, along with your University’s faculty advisor, are here to assist the Officers of the Student Chapters with planning COVID-safe virtual or in person meetings or activities, and to provide a budget to finance some of these events.

Upcoming Chapter Meeting Events • Thursday, October 15, 2020: October Chapter Meeting  Dr. Nancy Li, Director of Product - Edge Cloud Computing, Cox Communications.

Systems Engineering and Product Management Dr. Nancy Li has a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Boston University, and a Master’s in Systems Design and Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management. Dr. Li is an Entrepreneur, a Group Product Manager, and a YouTuber. She has 8 years of experience in developing and launching cutting-edge technology products. She has been invited to be a keynote speaker and a panelist at many different conferences, including the AI World Conference and the GLOW Women's Leadership Conference. Dr. Li is going to talk about the product manager role, and how systems engineers can prepare themselves for this role.

Perspectives on the Boeing 737MAX MCAS Dr. Ron Carson is a professor of systems engineering at the University of Washington, and was a Technical Fellow in Systems Engineering at Boeing, before he retired after spending 27 years at the company. Dr. Carson is going to talk about the recent Boeing 737MAX MCAS mishaps from a systems engineering perspective.

President's Message In August we held our virtual Regional Conference where all the chapters in the northeast come together for business meetings, conversation, and training. The business meetings are required to keep the Society operating and moving in a favorable direction while the training is designed to help individual chapters. Breakout sessions were held for each committee to discuss their roles and how to work more efficiently.

The committee chairs of ASHRAE Rochester were well attended at this year's CRC. Thank you volunteers!
