President’s Message Jon Kriegel, ASME Fellow RES President 2016 - 17 We engineers are pretty proud of the high tech world we help to create. We run power lines (above-ground, where the wind can have its way with them). We trust the internet to allow communication, (unless the cable is no longer attached to your house). So why I am writing the April Presidents letter by candle light in a house at 45⁰F? After six days without power, my daughter got reconnected, so she loaned me the Generator she had borrowed from yet another family (who never lost their electricity). Among other things, I hot-wired my furnace and had heat even without the Power Company’s help. That gas engine uses a lot of gasoline, and sure enough I let it run out. Not-to-worry, we borrowed their gas-can as well. So you fill ‘er up and we are back in business.

Not so fast.

Now the furnace pumps only cold air. Another day goes by without heat. Finally the house power comes back on, but I am still without heat!

A heating contractor finally comes and has to replace the several-hundred-dollar circuit board in the furnace because we had it plugged in when we re-started the gas (generator) engine and that sent a voltage spike that damaged the electronics.

Rochester History Continuing with the historical sampling of the earlier writings on behalf of the Rochester Engineering Society, the years following "The Great War," into and through the “Great Depression,” continued to be a time of reaching out for the maturing Society, both locally and nationally. The meeting minutes describe a series of technical discussions and presentations intended to broaden the technical horizons of the membership (especially the CE's, ME's and EE's). The RES affiliated itself with a number of National technical societies, adopted local Affiliated Societies, frequently held joint meetings with them and continued taking action on a growing list of public matters.

Certain issues of standardization, some crucial to public safety, became the responsibility of the RES and its affiliates. In the pervasive economic downturn of the “Great Depression,” the magazine offered classified advertising for unemployed engineers, technicians and draftsmen and took other steps to try to deal with the crisis. Still, it continued its effort to shape the function, purpose and infrastructure of the City of Rochester, and beyond. Soon, war would again affect the Society, taking away many of its leaders while providing opportunities for others to step forward to fill these vacancies. In an effort to provide even greater perspective on the happenings and concerns of the day, a synopsis, featuring selected items from "The Rochester Engineer" has become an integral part of this series. The Second World War and the Korean Conflict are now history. These experiences have changed the face and, no doubt, the future of the community. The Rochester municipal leadership and the industrial community have become immersed in the cold-war, growth economy.

This issue announced that RES member Ernest J. Howe, President of RG&E, would be retiring, and that he would be replaced by Linn B. Bowman, another RES member. The U of R announced that Dr. W. Lewis Hyde, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science since 1962, was named Director of the University’s Institute of Optics.

September 1, 1965 (Board of Directors Meeting, Rochester Products Division of General Motors) As requested at the

June 30th Board meeting by RES President Dr. John W. Graham, presentations of plans & goals for the coming year were made at this meeting by the RES Board Committees; Membership - 200 additional Regular Members, four new Sustaining Members, four additional Affiliated Societies; Budget & Finance – Securing support for reviewing the RES books from RG&E’s Accounting Department; Education – Two series of evening seminars for October & January; Public Affairs – Securing a speaker for the Engineers’ Joint Dinner; Constitution & By-Laws – Presentation of amendment(s) to the RES Constitution to enable representation on the RES Board by its Affiliates; Programs – A luncheon speaker from RG&E on the new nuclear plant, four evening meetings at local industrial plants (Bausch & Lomb, General Railway Signal, Gleason Works & Kodak Park); House – Continued search for a suitable location for an “Engineers Club”; Standards – Given the decreasing use of this long-standing RES file, it was recommended that this Committee be discontinued and the Standards file be disposed of. Dr. Graham announced that he intended to invite the Engineers Council for Professional Development to hold its 1971 Annual Meeting in Rochester, NY.

Education Committee. These seminars, including last year’s sections on College Mathematics Review, Computer Techniques and Efficient Reading, will be joined by sections on Design of Experiments, Technical Writing, Management Practices and Critical Path Planning. The courses, one evening per week, with 90 minute classes, were intended for practicing engineers who want to update their skills and extend their capabilities for larger responsibilities.

The classes were held in the Duffy-Powers Building, 50 W. Main Street, Rochester. NY. Dr. Graham announced a new two-degree program, inaugurated by the U of R’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, in conjunction with Hamilton College, Colgate University, St. Lawrence University, Earlham College, Denison University and Colby College. Under this program, students would spend three years on the campus of the liberal arts institution, followed by two years at the U of R’s College of Engineering and Applied Science. At the end of this five-year academic experience, the successful student would receive a BA from the first college and a BS in engineering from the U of R. In Dr. Graham’s view, “The students who will provide tomorrow’s leadership in the field of engineering will require an education that provides both a thorough grounding in scientific principles and a broad understanding of people and their needs.” Not to be out done, RIT announced that it would be offering MS degrees in photographic science and in instrumentation. Requiring 40 credit hours and a thesis, this course, headed by Dr. Burt H. Carroll, was designed for students with BS degrees from schools, other than RIT, and lacking a background in photography.

October 12, 1965 (Executive Committee Meeting, Chamber of Commerce) The Board approved ten new regular membership

applications, one junior member application and eight new members from Taylor Instrument Companies, under the Sustaining Membership program. The Board heard a proposal from the Otetiana Council of the Boy Scouts of America that the RES consider sponsoring an Explorer Troop, focused on the engineering profession. Sponsorship responsibilities would include providing a specific two-year program, personnel for a Troop Committee and a regular meeting place for the Troop. The Board agreed to further consider this, and designated Meriwether Baxter, RES Delegate to the Rochester Council of Scientific Societies, to continue discussions with Scout Leaders. The Membership Committee reported that the RES’s “What’s in it for Me?” brochure was being revised in anticipation of a renewed, updated 1965-66 membership campaign.

Subsequent articles in this series will describe the RES' continuing outreach to other technical societies as it considered its role in this and the larger community, along with more of the activities of the RES as it moved to be of greater service to its membership, especially those suffering from current economic crises, and adopted a greater role in shaping the future of the City and its environs. Noted also, will be the contributions made by RES members in the struggle to meet the challenges coming out of World War II, as well as a hoped-for period of post-war growth and prosperity. These articles will also feature an impressive array of RES activities in support of post-war re-emergence of Rochester area industry. RES News The RES Tutoring Team at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy still needs more tutors for the 2016-17 School Year

"A few words from Dr. Cooper..." at this year's Black History month luncheon at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy The RES Tutoring Team is well into school year 2016-17, at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy. Twentyone RES Tutors have begun working with our learners at #10 School. Eighteen of these tutors are from Bergmann Associates. Assembled into three teams (X, Y & Z), each of these tutors volunteers once a month for a two-hour assignment. The result is an equivalent three regular tutors, working every week with our students. Three full-time tutors have also begun their assignments.

Come to the April 8th, RES 2017 GALA, and meet some of our RES Tutors, honored guests of Bergmann Associates.

We are continuing to build our Tutoring Team, for the 2016-17 school year. RES News How do you arm a STEM Teacher with real-world application examples?

Put an Engineer in the classroom!

In the 1990’s, Eastman Kodak Company jumped the gun, starting a family of STEM initiatives, years before the Government coined the STEM acronym. The name of these programs was the 21st Century Learning Challenge (TCLC), and at our peek, we were 1500 engineers and technicians, visiting Rochester City School Classrooms, twice a week for two-hour visits, during the entire School Year. This effort continued for nearly ten years, and not only pre-dates our recent STEM excitement level, but delivered support on a scale we have yet to match.

Many of the volunteers in these programs were, and still are, members of the Rochester Engineering Society (RES). In the intervening twenty-five years, many have retired, or are about to retire. That makes them even more available as STEM Coaches, than they were as Kodak employees.

The RES is working to put technical people in K-12 Classrooms, throughout the Greater Rochester area, as STEM Coaches. Their presence will: • • •

Help the Teacher stay current with our ever-changing technology.

Provide real-World Application Examples, making whatever is being taught, real enough to be worth remembering.

Support the teachers with not only the delivery of STEM concepts, but perhaps more importantly, the design and delivery of STEM related hardware.

Last year we had six STEM Coach, doing Classroom Visitation at School #3. That was so successful that RCSD is interested in expanding this program to involve nine STEM Coaches this year.

The RES is specifically seeking Retired, Technical people, (Engineers, Technicians, Machinists, Entrepreneurs or anyone whose work would allow them to visit during School hours), as STEM Coaches. We currently have more than 30 Coaches, and are connecting them with 13 Rochester-area Schools.

The Limited Monopoly® Patenting Holes - And the Story of an Early Marketing Scheme

The Early Days

Thomas A. Edison was issued U.S. Patent No. 200,521 on February 19, 1878 for a phonograph, just one of more than 1,000 patents he was granted for his inventions. Edison’s invention of the phonograph was the result of his tinkering with telegraph transmission. Edison discovered that the human voice and other sounds could cause vibration in a plate and needle arrangement, allowing the needle to indent the plate in a way that recorded the sound. Another needle could then play the sounds back when traversing the indentations. Edison’s company went on to build cylindrical phonographs, and later flat disc phonographs.

Interestingly, the term phonograph was specific to machines made by Edison, with the term “talking machine” being the generic equivalent. Later, as the Victor Talking Machine Company’s Victrolas became popular with their concealed horns, the term Victrola became popular for the record players of the day.

“78”

Early flat disc records1 played at a speed of about 78 revolutions per minute. 78 rpm records were commonly produced in 10 inch and 12 inch diameter. In the early 1900’s, most records were recorded at between 78-80 rpm.

Small variations in recording speed often made old records sound a bit distorted. In 1925, 78.26 rpm was chosen as a standard, as this speed was easily achieved with a standard 3600 rpm electric motor and a 46 tooth reduction gear.

The math is simple - 3600/46 = 78.26.

TRIVIA QUESTION - How many grooves does a 78 rpm record have per side?3 (We are constantly amazed at how many people don’t know the answer to this standard.)

The Standard Disc Record

In 1901 the Standard Talking Machine Company was created to sell, well, non-standard records to the American public.

The Standard Talking Machine Company was part of a group of Chicago based companies, and essentially drilled out and relabeled existing Columbia records. This Chicago based company produced phonographs that had a spindle size of 9/16 inch, larger than the industry standard. This oversized spindle required the purchase of special proprietary records that had oversized holes. The Standard Talking Machines were given away “free” once a customer collected enough coupons that were given out with each purchase of other goods (think S&H Green Stamps). So marketing schemes didn’t start with inkjet printers or shoppers’ club cards. And this particular scheme worked well, with sales of Standard Disc Records far exceeding those of other record labels at the time. Of course as time progressed, other companies came up with their own “proprietary” spindle size, but the Standard Talking Machine Company appears to have been the first and most successful, with Standard Disc Records and Standard Talking Machines still fairly common in antique shops, collectors homes, and eBay. The non-

Early records were commonly made from a shellac resin, making them brittle. In World War II, when shellac was scarce, records began to be cut from vinyl. Although vinyl records were almost always black, they didn’t have to be. If you are old enough to remember record albums, you may also remember some colored vinyl records.2 As early as the 1920’s, Vocalion records used a red-brown vinyl as a marketing ploy, claiming that their records were superior to the black ones. If nothing else, in a market where record sleeves were all white, their colored records stood out from the crowd.

not consider other equivalent words that define an empty space. The current view of the courts, however, is that there is nothing inherently ambiguous or uncertain about a negative limitation.5

Holes in the 21st Century

Patent Claims and Empty Space

While the wording of patent claims is in a class by itself, those words, each and every one of them, are of paramount importance. A claim, by definition, can only be one sentence. So essentially you are defining your invention with a single sentence. Claim language is not only highly specialized and unique to the field of patent law, but it is very structural. A claim defines the structural elements of your invention and how they are inter-related. So when it comes to language that defines a void or a space, like a hole, an aperture, a gap, an orifice, a groove or a cavity, it is a commonly accepted practice to not claim the hole, but instead to claim the structure around the hole that makes up the hole.

Negative Limitations

Negative limitations are typically not welcome in claim language. “Every color except yellow and blue…”, “a connecting rod that is not cylindrical…”, are examples of negative limitations. Such language does not define what the invention is, but rather, defines what it is not. So negative limitations in claims tend to be indefinite, and often get rejected. A key patent statute4 states, “Claims must particularly point out and distinctly claim the invention.” Holes and other empty spaces have somehow fallen into this same category over the years. Yet a quick search for the word “hole” in patent claims shows that there are nearly a half million issued patents from 1975 to present that use the word hole or holes in their claims. So what’s going on? Have holes somehow evolved in the field of patent law? While we can’t point to any one event that has made the USPTO more tolerant of holes in patent claims, we think the way in which the holes are claimed in relation to other parts of the invention has a bearing on their acceptance. While it is true that holes are not void of material (most holes are made of air, or perhaps another substance like water, nitrogen, etc.), they are nonetheless one of those forbidden words that are often avoided. Instead of claiming the hole, claim the surrounding structure and recite the hole as a product of the positive structure around it. So perhaps those half million issued patents that recite holes in their claims have enough inter-related structure to satisfy even the most picky examiners.

So the non-standard hole in Standard Disc Records was never patented - in part because it was just a hole, and not only were holes in flat disc records obvious at the time, they were also considered subject matter that was not to be claimed.

Get to the Point!

Who's Got Style

When do we use bullets? When do we use numbers? Should there be periods in PE? How do we punctuate a bulleted list?

Is it OK to use the first person in our reports? Where do we place the company logo?

These are questions you should be asking and know who inside your firm has the answers. Unfortunately many firms are functioning without a “style guide”. This is an invaluable resource which details how documents should be written and formatted. The risk of working without a style guide is that your reports (which may be your most prominent deliverable) begin to look like they come from different organizations and present an unorganized, disconnected image.

You may remember, in a college course, being told by the professor that you needed to follow strict guidelines when writing formal papers. For example, when you cite a publication, set the publication name in italic. When you prepare a reference list, place the author’s name first, followed by the document title, publisher, and date. The page number of the referenced text should be in parenthesis. These guidelines were taken from a style guide and each professor had his/her own preferred guide. It may have been the Chicago Manual of Style, The APA (American Psychological Association) Style Guide, or The MLA (Modern Languages Association) Style Guide. As a student, you may have noticed that in some cases the guidelines varied. That’s because the “rules” in each guide are different.

Each engineer remembers the style a particular professor promoted, but because the styles may have been different, the resulting reports are inconsistent.

Now that you understand the need for a style guide, where do you begin? I can tell you where NOT to begin and that’s by issuing a grammar book or hefty style guide to each engineer. It will overwhelm them with too much information and they will not use it. Start by looking at a few longer reports and identify some of the inconsistencies. Look at the headings, line-spacing, spellings, acronyms, font choice and other factors that define the document.

Look at reports from other organizations and list what you like and don’t like about them. Ask a technical writer to review some sample documents and compare the word use and grammar with industry specific standards.

Create a list of the items you’ve discovered and then decide how you want them to be dealt with in the future. Consider these decisions as policy statements and then write them down in strong, confident language, much like a command: When using a bulleted list, the writer will use a lead-in line that forms a complete sentence followed by a colon.

Provide an example.

Before performing the test, ensure you have the following equipment: 1. xxxx 2. xxxxxx 3. xxxxx You can either base your decisions on a specific style guide (like the college professor does) or you can create your own company style which may be a combination of several guides. Be careful not to develop an odd style that may be uncomfortable to read. If there is a recognized standard then you should stick to that. For example, just because a senior engineer prefers to use “pds” as the abbreviation for the weight measurement pounds, this will cause confusion with your reader. The standard abbreviation, like it or not, is “lb”.

A team effort will produce the most comprehensive style guide.

This is essential if your firm is multi-disciplinary because each field has its own specific language and variations. You need to address all disciplines. However, I suggest there be one person who holds the master document and controls the inputs. This person must be given the ultimate decisions on establishing the style but needs to communicate well with all areas of the firm. Although it often is someone in the marketing team, it doesn’t have to be. Technical professionals are just as capable of researching and understanding language as non-technical professionals.

The development of a style guide can take months or years. It should be considered a work in progress and everyone should feel they can contribute. To be effective, the importance of the style guide must be communicated and reinforced throughout the firm and this is often best done by a senior level employee.

Ray Kurzweil, a futurist and inventor, believes that computers will become more intelligent than human beings. Coupled with Stephen Hawking’s dire prediction “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race,” our technology future is a bit foreboding. Kurzweil predicts this ‘singular’ event to occur by the year 2045 - which will coincide with the movie release – Terminator 17.

Ransomware – March 3, 2017 - Democrats in Pennsylvania's state Senate were locked out of their computer network early Friday morning due to a ransomware attack, according to a NBC news report. According to the report the Democratic senators in the capital city of Harrisburg use their own computer network and "there is no indication that other state agencies or the Republicans have been affected."

Almost 25 percent of users then clicked a link to be taken to a fake login screen. Campus News RIT researcher receives NIST award to develop secure applications for deeply-embedded systems Improvements could enable better security for wearable and implantable medical devices

Mehran Mozaffari Kermani, a faculty member at Rochester Institute of Technology, recently received a grant to design security measures for computing systems that will protect wearable and implanted medical devices such as pacemakers from cyberattacks. It is work that could improve both patient safety and data integrity of deeply-embedded systems.

Mozaffari Kermani, an assistant professor of electrical engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, received $343,406 in funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology— Measurement Science & Engineering Research Grant Program. He will develop cryptographic systems and technology that will further secure deeply-embedded computing systems—organizational networks connected to the internet.

“It is important to secure deeply-embedded systems. If you think of credit cards or cell phones, there have been security studies about these applications for years. If lost, this could be mostly financial loss,” he said. “But if we talk about security with medical devices, it could be life threatening. Instead of dollars, we could lose lives.”

Today, pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators and insulin pumps, for example, are representative of wireless devices with deeply-embedded computing systems. Devices capture patient data then transmit that information via the internet to medical personnel.

Yet data can also be intercepted unless secured, and access to the implantable device’s system can also compromise its functionality for a patient.

Security integration poses challenges to design and processing power.

Current system security algorithms need to be integrated into highly sensitive environments, in small spaces and also have varying energy requirements to ensure optimal use. Researchers are looking for solutions to balance needed computing power with device longevity and security.

Mozaffari Kermani’s research, “Design for fault attack resiliency of lightweight cryptographic architectures for deeply-embedded systems,” ensures that security countermeasures for network attacks are more fully integrated into the overall design process of deeplyembedded systems. His approach is to include security as part of the original design process by developing a countermeasure for an analysis attack—described as a type of implementation attack in which the attacker injects intentional faults into the implementation of the cryptographical algorithms.

“The security aspects of these deeply-embedded systems are different than legacy embedded systems, such as smart cards or sensor networks.

The usage models and applications we have for these deeply embedded systems are very sensitive. They deal with human health and the ability to diagnosis different diseases, for instance. If there is a security breach in those applications, this could be life-threatening,” he said.

Mozaffari Kermani is collaborating with researchers at Florida Atlantic University on this project and a related initiative in the area of postquantum cryptography. q 16 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER APRIL 2017

Campus News RIT helps advance space camera being tested on ISS Imaging technology could improve search for distant planets Imaging technology advanced by researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology and Florida Institute of Technology is being tested on the International Space Station and could someday be used on future space telescopes.

A new twist on the charge injection device camera, originally developed in 1972 by General Electric Co., fine tunes the array of pixels for improved exposure control in low light conditions. The enhanced technology could give scientists a new method for imaging planets around other stars and improve the search for habitable Earth-like planets.

Zoran Ninkov, professor in RIT’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, and Daniel Batcheldor, head of physics and Space Sciences at FIT, designed the charge injection device camera to capture contrasts between light emitted by

astronomical objects.

“CID arrays offer considerable promise in many applications due to the focal plane architecture that allows random pixel access and non-destructive readout,” said Ninkov, a member of RIT’s Center for Detectors and Future Photon Initiative.

“In addition to improving presently available devices, the development of next-generation imaging arrays promise considerable flexibility in read-out and on-chip processing for the future.”

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, on Feb. 19, carried the charge injection device to the International Space Station in the cargo of supplies and science experiments.

Astronauts have installed the camera on a platform outside the space station. They will test the camera for six months.

“We expect to start seeing results by the end of April,” said Batcheldor, lead

scientist on the project. “A complex test pattern will be sent from a successfully operated camera through the ISS systems and down to the ground. A successful demonstration of CIDs on the International Space Station will put this technology at the NASA Technology Readiness Level 8, which means it’s ready to fly as a primary instrument on a future space telescope.”

Batcheldor is a former post-doctoral research associate in RIT’s School of Physics and Astronomy and a former associate research scientist in RIT’s Center for Imaging Science. He and Ninkov have worked together on this experiment for years. They previously have tested charge injection devices from ground-based observatories. Limitations created by the Earth’s atmosphere prevent the sensor from capturing images sharp enough to detect planets in other solar systems, Batcheldor noted. q

RIT undergraduates reproduce conditions of oceans, atmosphere on Earth-like planets RIT Science Exploration Program studies habitable zone of alien planets First-year students in Rochester Institute of Technology’s Science Exploration Program are reproducing a slice of life in their lab that might exist on the seven Earth-like planets recently discovered in another solar system.

NASA announced the record-setting discovery of planets orbiting another star on Feb. 21. The red dwarf star, called TRAPPIST-1, is located 40 light years away. Astronomers studied fluctuations in the star’s brightness when the planets crossed in front of the star and blocked its light. Excitement surrounds the potential of liquid water on the seven planets and habitable conditions on the first three.

RIT undergraduates are simulating the right atmospheric conditions within the habitable zone suitable for supporting life beyond our solar system. The students’ experiments have created 10 amino acids—the fundamental building blocks of life—in different solutions. Their laboratory apparatus contains tiny oceans and atmospheres that could mimic conditions on an exoplanet. They are studying if amino acids can be produced 26 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER APRIL 2017

in these harsh environments. Chains of amino acids can form proteins and, eventually, more complex organic material like RNA and DNA. “The team has reproduced a wide range of conditions that might exist on distant planets and has been simulating the environmental and photochemical processes to determine whether or not amino acids are created,” said Roger Dube, director of the Science Exploration Program and professor in RIT’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science.

The students have found a range of parameters that produce amino acids, which is the prerequisite for predicting what type of life might appear on exoplanets, Dube said.

RIT’s Science Exploration Program in the College of Science challenges first-year undeclared students with a single yearlong project with an interdisciplinary scope. Students will present their findings at the 10th Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival on May 6. q

RIT Racing competes as only U.S. entrant this summer in Formula Student East, Budapest Team celebrates 25th anniversary season, fielding two cars for the first time and brings back original racecar during Imagine Festival RIT’s Formula Racing team will head to Budapest, Hungary this summer to compete for the first time in Formula Student East, a major collegiate racing competition. RIT Racing will also be the only American entry for the competition taking place July 20-23, 2017 at the Euro-Ring Circuit. More than 115 collegiate race teams from 28 countries are expected.

Formula Student East is only one event on the schedule as the team celebrates its 25th anniversary of national and international competitions, and highlights its successes since it first began racing in the early 1990s.

“Some of the best, most competitive Formula Student teams from Europe will compete in Budapest,” said Jon Washington, 2017 project manager for RIT Racing. “We’re really looking forward to heading back to Europe for competition. These trips allow us to validate a year’s worth of hard work against some of the best teams in the world.”

Washington, a fifth-year mechanical engineering major from Upper Marlboro, Md., oversees the 50plus students on the team, coordinating the racecar build process, budgets, logistics and travel. Building the car is critical, he added, but Formula competitions also demand that student-competitors discuss the design process and business workings as if they are an actual enterprise.

Many groups need to come together to complete the critical tasks required to operate at an RIT level of quality and execution. Building two racecars for the first time ever is no small task according to Pat Burke, the race team’s chief engineer, who said he knows firsthand the difficulties involved.

“Building two cars requires extreme flexibility,” said Burke, a fifth-year mechanical engineering student, from Lexington, Mass. “Nearly every team member has had to take on additional tasks to ensure projects are completed ahead of deadlines. It’s been a great learning experience for both veteran and new members, simply because of the challenges presented from building two cars.”

The 2017 season will be a year of firsts for RIT Racing. It will field two racecars, one a traditional gasoline-powered model, with the other an allelectric vehicle. Both vehicles are currently under development, and will be formally unveiled at the annual Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival on Saturday, May 6. That day, F1, the original car from the 1991-92 season, will join the parade of motorsport team vehicles at the festival. F1 is currently being refurbished by Salvatore Fava ’16 (mechanical engineering), a long time member of the team and last year’s project manager.

RIT Racing competes in Michigan, May 10-13 and Formula North in Ontario, Canada, June 1-4 before heading to Budapest in July. The electric car, E1, competes for the first time at Formula North.

Each year all of RIT’s competitive race teams—RIT Racing, RIT HotWheelz, RIT Baja, RIT EVT and RIT Clean Snowmobile—showcase their vehicles at Imagine RIT prior to competitions taking place in the U.S. and abroad. q

Campus News RIT centers receive grants to improve additive manufacturing, high tech optics and photonic fabrication systems New equipment and research capacity will help produce new electronic devices, decrease fabrication waste and generate regional jobs Two research centers leading additive manufacturing and optics manufacturing initiatives at Rochester Institute of Technology each received grants from FuzeHub, the statewide New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership Program center.

Awards were given to RIT’s AMPrint Center—the New York State Center for Additive Manufacturing and Multifunctional Printing, and the university’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science to purchase equipment for use in center laboratories focused on advanced manufacturing research and new product development as well as the development of ultra-fast, laser-based technology for optics fabrication within university-corporate partnerships.

FuzeHub, funded by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR), provides manufacturing companies in the region with resources and expertise to advance business growth, technology commercialization and global competitiveness.

The Manufacturing Innovation Grants, part of the Jeff Lawrence Manufacturing Innovation Fund and received by RIT, will go toward new research and product development.

RIT’s AMPrint Center received $36,000 to purchase an inkjet head assembly to be integrated with Sensor Film’s 3D-printing equipment at the center to execute the project, adding long-term manufacturing prototyping capability to the center. The new equipment advances capability in 3D-printing electronics onto substrates. Denis Cormier, director of the center, and his research team are working with Sensor Films to define the operating conditions for high throughput additive manufacturing equipment capable of rapidly printing electrically-conductive patterns on plastic substrates. Sensor Film’s ability to apply the experimental results to a suite of new manufacturing equipment will result in commercially implemented products to be built and sold in 2017 and will create eight new high-technology jobs in the local economy.

The Center for Imaging Science received $75,000 for advancing work with OptiPro Systems on a project to develop an innovative ultrafast laser-based polishing system and process for optical manufacturing to eliminate polishing waste, long lead-time and high cost factors.

The same technology platform can potentially be applied to laser-based photonics packaging. The laboratory version laser polishing system will

be developed in the Laboratory for Advanced Optical Fabrication and Instrumentation and Metrology by Jie Qiao, associate professor in the Center for Imaging Science and director of the lab. She and her research team are working with Edward Fess, research and development manager at OptiPro Systems, a Rochesterbased manufacturer specializing in equipment for the fabrication of highprecision optics.

“One of the goals of the fund, and the Manufacturing Innovation Grants, is to spur economic development in the manufacturing sector, and we’re seeing that even these small investments in manufacturing projects are allowing companies to add jobs, strengthening their teams and contribute to their growth,” said FuzeHub Executive Director Elena Garuc. FuzeHub provided more than $469,000 in grants to seven regional projects, and through them, expects to add 46 new jobs across New York state.

“These projects are a great example of how New York’s innovation assets are supporting industry and contributing to economic growth in New York.” q

RIT designated newest National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenge Scholars Program Integrating liberal arts and engineering education encourages students to become problem solvers of 21st century societal challenges RIT has become the newest university to be designated as part of the Grand Challenge Scholars Program, a national initiative to train future engineering and non-engineering professionals to play a significant role in solving the major challenges of the 21st century.

The National Academy of Engineering detailed 14 challenges that if solved through collaborations between individuals in science, engineering and the liberal arts could positively impact complex societal issues such as improving urban infrastructure, making solar energy economical, securing cyberspace, providing access to clean water and engineering better medicines.

The RIT Grand Challenge Scholars Program will be a unique pathway for students to attain degrees that increase students’ awareness of the global challenges and provide experiences and training that attune engineers to the complexity of nontechnical aspects of problems, and non-engineers to the technical aspects of problems. Addressing challenges requires that they be viewed as more than technical problems, many with the need to understand that solutions must integrate cultural, social, political and human qualities, said James Winebrake, dean of RIT’s College of Liberal Arts.

“The approval by the National Academy of Engineering of RIT’s Grand Challenge Scholars Program validates our efforts to bring liberal arts perspectives to help solve the world’s most pressing problems,” said Winebrake. “To solve these problems, students need to understand not only advanced technology, but also the social, cultural, political, ethical and economic dimensions of these problems. Our new Grand Challenge Scholars Program allows students to understand and address these non-technical elements through innovative curricula and project-based work.”

Components of RIT’s GCSP includes a gateway course to introduce students to the objectives of the program as well as several activities that vary from research and interdisciplinary coursework to global, service and entrepreneurial experiences.

Coursework would be a combination of general education and degree program requirements as well as those that align with the Grand Challenges.

As part of the GCSP, RIT will take advantage of several established and successful components of its educational curriculum, particularly its co-operative education program and its international campuses. Students who participate in the GCSP would work with mentors and academic advisers to ensure that their learning experience integrates technical skills campus news

with critical thinking, communication and awareness of, and respect for, diversity, said Doreen Edwards, dean of RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

“RIT has emerged as a national leader in developing meaningful interdisciplinary curricula that integrate liberal arts with STEM education,” said Edwards. “We have confidence that these curricula will help our students succeed professionally and personally. We expect to attract student in engineering, in liberal arts, in computing and across the university who see their education as a means of both achieving their own personal goals and improving the world in which they live.”

The gateway course was developed last summer, and students were enrolled this past fall as part of a pilot of the larger program. Students interested in participating can apply to the program in their first semester, but no later than their fifth semester, and will detail how they could contribute to one of the Grand Challenges. Projects being done by the GCSP Scholars are expected to be displayed at the annual Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival, where students will have the option of publicly presenting their accomplishments.

Led by faculty in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering and the College of Liberal Arts, the GCSP program aligns with the strategic direction of the university and its intent to develop the “T-shaped” graduate. RIT’s Strategic Plan (“Greatness through Difference, 2015-2025”) emphasizes interdisciplinary research and curricula across the entire institute. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (2015) reported that 91 percent of employers agreed that for career success, “a candidate’s demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than his or her undergraduate major.” This is reinforced by another statement indicating that 96 percent of employers value a candidate’s ability to “solve problems with people whose views are different than their own.”

Our meeting in March was on “ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient (bEQ)” presented by Hoy Bohanon, PE (ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer). The turnout was great, thank you to everyone who attended.

On Monday, March 3rd, 2017 the Rochester ASHRAE Chapter attempted to host our 1st Annual ASHRAE Snow Day at Hunt Hollow. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans. A special thanks to George Herman for organizing this event and hope that we can pull it off next year.

The Engineering Symposium in Rochester is scheduled for April 18, 2017 at the Hyatt Downtown. This event offers multiple seminars that total seven (7) professional development hours (PDHs). President's Message An engineering icon, Ed Maybeck FASPE, passed away in early February at the age of 82.

Ed served on the ASPE National Board as Vice President, Technical from 1974-1978, and was elected President for the 1978-1980 term at the 1978 Convention in New Orleans. Ed also traveled several times to the Soviet Union as part of a U.S. delegation to investigate and share plumbing innovations and technologies. Our condolences go out to Ed’s family.

Ballots for voting for the 2017-2019 Chapter officers will be sent via e-mail to all Chapter members this month. Election results will be announced in May. The annual Golf Outing will be held on Thursday, June 8th at the Victor Golf Club. We will be playing the South Course and will tee off at 10:00 am. The golf committee is seeking hole sponsors ($100) and prize sponsors ($200) to support the outing. Please make checks payable to ASPE Rochester. Topic: “What are Patents Good For?" Speaker: Richard Blazey, President of Business Metamorphosis, LLC Abstract: There’s no questions that patents can be expensive, frustrating and time consuming. But what are they good for. Why get a patent in the first place?

I like to think of a patent as like a deed to a house, and like that deed the patent conveys ownership. In the case of a patent it conveys ownership to an idea. Ideas are those ephemeral notions that in one episode of "Seinfeld" a character says are floating around in the air.

To succeed in getting a patent you need to make that ephemeral idea concrete and expressible in patent language. Once you have that right you can: • Sell the invention to someone else; • Prevent others from copying and selling your idea; •Use it to convince investors to support you in commercializing your invention; and, • Act as collateral for a loan or other cash advance.

Suppose you don't bother to get a patent. That is an increasingly common strategy particularly in the software space. But it might not be such a good idea. If you don't patent your idea anyone who wants it can take it. Worse, if someone has already patented your invention they can sue you and shut off your production.

In the talk I will also cover other kinds of protection that you might want to obtain. Sometimes a patent isn't your best alternative.

NYSSPE Seeks Stricter Penalties for Unethical Practice The first and foremost responsibility of the professional engineer is to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Recent events have demonstrated the seriousness of this obligation and the tragedy that can occur when this principle is flagrantly disregarded through unethical practice of engineering.

In 2011, Maqsood Faruqi, was contracted as a professional engineer to supervise the inspection of the façade of a building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Although Mr. Faruqi signed off on the building façade as being safe, later investigation revealed that he never even visited the site, nor did he review the maintenance records and previous inspections.

On May 17, 2015, two-year old Greta Greene and her grandmother, Susan Frierson, were sitting on a sidewalk bench below the façade that had been certified as safe by Mr. Faruqi. Suddenly bricks became dislodged from the façade and, falling eight stories, struck Greta and her grandmother. Tragically, little Greta died the following day as a result of head injuries.

Faruqi was arrested and pleaded guilty to one count of offering a false instrument for filing in exchange for a sentence of probation. In view of such a flagrant violation of engineering ethics and the associated tragic results, this light sentence can be considered a failure of our criminal justice system. There is still a professional misconduct charge pending. According to NYSSPE legal counsel, Mark Kriss, “we want to make certain that the significance of the injury…gets weighed and factored properly” in such cases.

There are currently two similar cases where NYSSPE is concerned that the filing of false instruments needs to be seen as a significant danger to public health, safety, and welfare, and needs to carry the proper degree of penalty. NYSSPE is currently working with the State Education Department and the Office of Professions in order to ensure that these cases carry the proper measure of discipline. Christopher Lapszynski is currently a Ph.D. student in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science. His research experience and interests include remote sensing, calibration, data acquisition, modeling, and algorithm development. He received a B.S. in imaging science, from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2013. Prior to returning to Rochester in 2016 to pursue his Ph.D., he was an engineer at CACI, supporting the Geospatial Technologies and Solutions Division in Dayton Ohio. During his time in Dayton he supported the Air Force and Army, winning an Encore Achievement Award for his technical expertise, and considerable effort during several collection campaigns. In 2016 he began working for Hyperspectral Solutions LLC, a Rochester based small business. At Hyperspectral Solutions LLC he continues to perform research and development in support of the Army, while pursuing his academic interests within the Center for Imaging Science.

Virtual Cinematography Haley Wiskoski is a first year imaging science student from Whitehall, NY. She attended high school at Whitehall Jr./Sr. High and came to RIT as an engineering exploration major. After doing research on different engineering and science fields she found that imaging science really caught her attention, as it is a combination of many different fields she's interested in such as computer science, physics, and engineering. In the future she hopes to pursue a career path in

Keegan McCoy is a 1st-year imaging science PhD student at RIT and the program manager for this year's grad lab project. Originally from Harrisburg, PA, Keegan earned bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and astronomy & astrophysics, as well as his master's degree in electrical engineering, from Penn State University. His master's thesis focused on characterizing properties of optical fibers and fiber couplings used in high-resolution, near-infrared spectrographs critical to the precision radial-velocity detection of exoplanets. Upon graduation in 2012, Keegan completed Air Force Officer Training School at Maxwell AFB, AL and commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant. He then spent the next 4 years as a Launch Vehicle Engineer and Chief of Training for the 1st Air and Space Test Squadron at Vandenberg AFB, CA. In his free time, Keegan enjoys spending time with his wife Amy, traveling, visiting historical sites, playing board games, and attending sporting events.
