President’s Message Adam Cummings, PE RES President 2015 - 16

Six weeks from this issue bring us to the 114th RES Annual Gala on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The evening will honor and celebrate many of our very deserving engineering students and professionals. We have a slew of new, exciting activities for all to enjoy. In addition to honoring our local engineering honorees, we will be celebrating the many firms, leaders, individuals, and developers that are Rebuilding Our Community.

Thanks, Phil, but we are looking forward to Spring in six weeks.

This winter has been one for the record books. Usually I am hibernating and counting down the days until the grass is growing again. Golf just is not the same in the snow.

However, my family and I have been able to go to the park several times thanks to the abnormally warm winter. On February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil proclaimed only a few more weeks of winter. Of course, we then saw record low temperatures and finally, some snow!

Groundhog’s Day always peaks my curiosity to learn how accurate this “meteorologist” is compared to his contemporary, technological counterparts that we see on the morning or evening news. According to the statistics maintained by some folks in Punxsutawney, Phil should not quit his day job. He is only right 37% of the time, while flipping a coin is typically 50%. I think I will stick with the morning news and the Farmer’s Almanac for my forecasts, though!

February is commonly known as conference season in the civil engineering consulting world. The RES Calendar reflects this fact as it is the busiest month of the year.

Many of our affiliate societies are holding events gearing up for spring and reinvigoration from winter as our molecules slowly begin to warm up.

Congratulations to all and my sincere thanks for all that you do to promote STEM and maintain the prestigious reputation of Rochester and engineering innovations. Rochester History Continuing with the historical sampling of the earlier writings on behalf of the Rochester Engineering Society, the years following "The Great War," into and through the “Great Depression,” continued to be a time of reaching out for the maturing Society, both locally and nationally. The meeting minutes describe a series of technical discussions and presentations intended to broaden the technical horizons of the membership (especially the CE's, ME's and EE's). The RES affiliated itself with a number of National technical societies, adopted local Affiliated Societies, frequently held joint meetings with them and continued taking action on a growing list of public matters.

Certain issues of standardization, some crucial to public safety, became the responsibility of the RES and its affiliates. In the pervasive economic downturn of the “Great Depression”, the magazine offered classified advertising for unemployed engineers, technicians and draftsmen and took other steps to try to deal with the crisis. Still, it continued its effort to shape the function, purpose and infrastructure of the City of Rochester, and beyond. Soon, war would again affect the Society, taking away many of its leaders while providing opportunities for others to step forward to fill these vacancies. In an effort to provide even greater perspective on the happenings and concerns of the day, a synopsis, featuring selected items from "The Rochester Engineer" has become an integral part of this series. The Second World War and the Korean Conflict are now history. These experiences have changed the face and, no doubt, the future of the community. The Rochester municipal leadership and the industrial community have become immersed in the cold-war, growth economy.

“The Rochester Engineer” (February 1963)

The February RES noon luncheon program was announced as: “Cultural and Industrial Renewal of the Genesee River,” a panel discussion with Harold J. Brennan, Ronald Sattelberg and William Lattin, “Development Plans of the Water Authority,” by Monroe County Water Authority Chair, George R. Williams, “New Trends in Architecture and Engineering,” by City Engineer, Col. Carey H. Brown, and “Traffic Engineering Problems in Rochester,” by City Traffic Engineer, Eugene L. Simm. This issue being “The Architects Number,” an article, “Rochester Civic Improvement Authority,” by Ronald E. Sattelberg, described a proposed series of over-head (2nd floor level) pedestrian walkways, connecting the major downtown commercial centers; Sibley’s, Midtown Plaza and Lincoln Rochester Trust Company to several proposed multi-story parking garages. Rather than by government or private enterprise, these were to be built by a Rochester Civic Development Authority, similar to the NY Port Authority.

In an effort to broaden the perspective of Rochester’s engineering community, the RES noon luncheon series offered four more weekly meetings on the following topics: “Problems of the City Manager,”

by Rochester’s City Manager, Porter W. Homer, “Further Progress in State Arterial Development,” by NYS DPW District Engineer, Bernard F. Perry, “The European Automotive Picture, Over the Next Five Years,” by Gleason Works’ General Sales Manager, Irving Peachey, and “Continued Growth at Xerox Through Research and Development,” by Assistant VP, Clyde R. Mayo. A report by the Engineering Manpower Commission announced that the 1963 median salary for engineers was $10,375, up 8% from the 1961 figure. The U of R announced a change in the name of its engineering college to “The College of Engineering and Applied Science,” more accurately reflecting the breadth of its academic focus.

“The Rochester Engineer” (April 1963)

David L. Garratt, City of Rochester Director of Buildings, Rehabilitation and Conservation, in an article, “Getting More Out of Our Buildings” described the ways in which Rochester was trying to extend and enhance the use of residential and commercial buildings, rather than move immediately into urban renewal activities. He described programs of redevelopment, relocation, rehabilitation, conservation and new construction or remodeling. Recent (1962) changes in local laws allowed the Rochester Building Bureau to offer one central source of information on all City buildings. This included establishing eight distinct divisions; General Office, Zoning, Engineering, Construction, Conservation, Plumbing, Special Inspection and Compliance. Also, the City adopted an updated Property Rehabilitation and Conservation Code to supplement, but not replace, existing codes, and it included controls on vacant lots.

This issue presented the slate of RES officers for the 1964-65 year, including: President – Lynn C. Holmes, General Dynamics, 1st Vice President – Bernard F. Perry, NYS Department of Public Works, 2nd Vice President – Dr. John W. Graham, University of Rochester, Treasurer – Howard A. Brown, RG&E, Directors – Alexander M. Beebee, Jr., Rochester Products/General Motors and Frank H. Slaymaker, General Dynamics/Electronics.

June 27, 1963 (Board of Directors Meeting, Hotel Sheraton) The Board appointed former RES Director Harvey J. Klumb to serve on the Executive Committee. The Board unanimously approved a motion retiring Executive Secretary Oliver O. Angevine, effective July 1, 1963, and it further agreed to pay him a retirement stipend of “$200 per month, during his lifetime.” Included in this motion was the intent to appoint a committee, “to thoroughly investigate the means by which the foregoing motion on Mr. Angevine’s retirement may be implemented and report back at an early date to the Board of Directors.”

This issue listed over 50 new publications, recently added by the RES, to the Rochester Public Library. While some of these may seem rather dated, such as “Using the Slide Rule in Electronic Technology,” such as it is important to notice that they were not just high-tech publications, “A Comparison of the Brittle Behavior of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials,” but also many with a focus on attracting and informing young, prospective engineers, “Having Fun With Transistors.”

Subsequent articles in this series will describe the RES' continuing outreach to other technical societies as it considered its role in this and the larger community, along with more of the activities of the RES as it moved to be of greater service to its membership, especially those suffering from the current economic crisis, and adopted a greater role in shaping the future of the City and its environs. Noted also, will be the contributions made by RES members in the struggle to meet the challenges coming out of World War II, as well as a hoped-for period of post-war growth and prosperity. These articles will also feature an impressive array of RES activities in support of post-war re-emergence of Rochester area industry.

Bergmann Associates, PC, joins the RES Tutoring Team.

Beginning on Wednesday, December 2nd, a team of ten professionals from Bergmann Associates began their weekly schedule of tutoring at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy. With each one working one day per month, divided into two teams, they are the equivalent of two weekly tutors supporting our #10 school students. We thank Bergmann CEO, Tom Mitchell PE (also a member of the Bergmann Tutoring Team), for his vision in encouraging this effort.

It’s time, now, to complete our Tutoring Team for the 2015-16 school year.

We have many of our 20+ RES Tutors returning, but the need is great, and we still need more. We are currently scheduling “Lunch & Learn” presentations in several Rochester area firms, to inform and inspire prospective new tutors. We need your support..can we schedule one with your firm, work group, church or family?

Professional Engineers, recently-graduated engineers, retired engineers, retired school teachers, U of R and RIT undergraduate and graduate students, local business leaders and employees using their “flex-time” to spend a few hours a week as tutors.

Get to the Point!

Managing Technical Professionals: Communication and Interpersonal Skills Reprinted with permission from the author.

In previous articles, I have implied that communication and people skills are a must have for technology managers, and I even mentioned that hearing the following from managers is not uncommon: “It’s not the technical work that’s challenging, it’s the people stuff!” The “stuff” that is being referred to here are the typical “people behavior” you see in your teams: “John is in a mood today, keep your distance from him”, “can someone tell Shirley that she speaks too loud in her cubicle and I can’t focus on my work?”, “Matt talks about religion at work and it offends me because I’m an atheist; he needs to stop talking about religion in the work place”, “Thelma took all the credit to the work that I did and now everyone thinks she came up with that idea”, … How many of you managers, have come across complaints such as these at work, and what have you done about them? The answer better not be “nothing, I don’t have time to deal with this childish behavior, I have work to do”.

The truth is, dealing with this “childish behavior” is part of your job. While for an accomplished technologist the technical challenges are fun to deal with and the more challenging the issue is the more fun it becomes, the accomplished technologist who does not have the necessary communication and people skills to manage the team will struggle to deal with the “people behavior” listed above. Your team members are real people and real people have emotions, emotions that you need to learn how to deal with so your team can function properly.

Communication and interpersonal skills go hand in hand and technology managers need to improve their skills for both! You need to learn how to communicate because your comments carry more meaning then they used to now that you are a manager. Always avoid gossip and always have your facts straight. Learn how to listen and learn how to be quiet, and realize that the two are not the same thing.

Improving your communication skills will also help with your interpersonal skills: Your interpersonal skills will help you build relationships, not only with your own team 6 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER MARCH 2016

members but also with people outside your organization.

These interpersonal skills will also help you deal with the negative people in your team. Negative people can poison your entire organization very quickly if not dealt with carefully and urgently. Interpersonal skills will also help you deal with conflict within and outside your organization. Even if you are lucky enough that you have never had to deal with conflict in your team, this skill might come in handy one day. One critical aspect of being a manager is to know how to give performance feedback – both positive and negative – to your team members.

We dedicated one of the previous articles to providing performance feedback and it is important to know that having the interpersonal skills will be very helpful in successful delivery of performance feedback, or any kind of feedback for that matter. This feedback will help set direction for your team members and help them towards success in their careers so never underestimate the power of good communication and interpersonal skills.

As managers, we always need to be conscious about setting an example for our team members. Learning to better communicate and interact with people will be tremendously helpful in doing so. Good communication within the team paves the way for listening to and understanding each other, avoiding misunderstandings, and creating a fun environment to work in. And when people enjoy their work environment the possibilities are endless.

Communication is only one issue engineering teams face but don’t handle very well. To be successful leaders, technical professionals need to improve their people skills. Keep in mind that RGI “puts the P in the PE” and we can help. See our CTEL listing on the back page of this magazine.

The Battling Bickersons — André Godfrey While Technology and Security are married to each like life mates, there is a constant escalation and exacerbation and though they have to live with each other they apparently don’t have to get along. Technology and Security are the battling Bickersons of our era. I say that albeit the battling Bickersons is well before your era. Or mine for that matter. It was a radio show where the husband and wife waged nightly verbal warfare.

To wit: Mrs.: You used to be so considerate. Since you got married to me you haven't got any sympathy at all.

Mr.: I have, too. I've got everybody's sympathy.

Mrs.: Believe me, there's better fish in the ocean than the one I caught.

Mr.: There's better bait, too.

Mrs.: I don't see how you can go to bed without kissing me good night.

Mr.: I can do it.

Mrs.: You'd better say you're sorry for that, John.

Mr.: Okay, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

Mrs.: You are not.

Mr.: I am too. I'm the sorriest man that was ever born.

Ok, maybe not exactly Modern Family repartee but you get the idea.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings, Fitbits, your watch, your Smartphone, your home security alarms (now your doorbell!), security cameras, your credit cards and car keys and on and on and on. The estimate is connected ‘things’ by 2020 is 50 billion objects and I personally believe that is an extraordinarily low estimate. The question I am asked on a regular basis is how someone can guarantee security in my networked environment.

The callous and unsatisfactory answer is easy. Unplug everything. Everything because every little thing now touches the network and consequently poses a possible security risk.

Each one of those objects poses a threat. What kind of threat?

One of the threats interesting enough is Cloud Migration itself. It’s inexorable and perhaps inevitable in some instances and while the end game may ultimately improve security at

some point the challenge is that cloud security processes and solutions are still being developed. I’ve never understood why people are surprised at this. I think there are many benefits to ‘going cloud’ but security is unlikely to be one of them.

Just take a look at the breaches in some of the largest and supposedly most secure environments and that includes government.

Let’s have some fun and list a few more threats like: Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks: password mis-management from uncooperative users, sabotage from competitors, omnipresent malware and botnets, dissatisfied employees, inappropriate and malevolent Internet sites and even statesponsored espionage from evil empires. To name a few.

Since the Internet of Things is perceived to be the threat, some companies in an effort to understand weaknesses and mitigate or eliminate those weaknesses are looking at the actual Things that are Interneted. If we can identify what those things are and build tables of security weaknesses for each of these ‘things’ and give them a hierarchy of potential risk, then perhaps we can holistically control and secure our environment. To do so they are building GRC applications and controls. What’s GRC? Governance, Risk and Compliance and it’s the new sheriff in town that may bring some order to this chaos and help you coordinate security specific requirements and systematically address your industry needs. Not room here today to give much detail on GRC. Perhaps if I hadn’t wasted so much space on bad dialogue from an old radio show we might have gotten it in but suffice to say for the moment that there are some very sophisticated tools out there that enable companies to manage all devices centrally and generate reports and information to satisfy the security and compliance audits that are required by company boards and governing bodies.

How have you used your engineering skills for community and professional leadership?

Most of my focus in this category has been aimed at technology development within the community and enabling opportunities for corporate development through public/private partnerships such as AIM Photonics.

How have you used your engineering skills for community and professional leadership?

I have mentored several university student teams for their senior projects and I have helped lead the IEEE Rochester Section. I hope to inspire other young engineers to be active in the local high-tech community.

What do you consider your greatest engineering achievement?

One of the most rewarding achievements has been in the growth of the engineering program at the University of Rochester, adding 1000 students to the program during a 7 year period.

What do you consider your greatest engineering achievement?

My greatest engineering accomplishment has been the design of a new satellite communication antenna system. The antenna system was designed to maximize gain and isolation performance in the bands to improve geographical coverage.

Describe a key event or individual that had a profound effect on your career.

I was recruited into administration by Kristina Johnson when she served as Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering and gained much experience and perspective in my work with her.

What advice would you give to our scholarship recipients, who will be in attendance at the Gala?

Choose your future career path based upon the area of engineering from which you derive the most joy and remember both the privilege and responsibility of service to society.

Articulate your vision for engineering in Rochester.

Rochester is a city that in many respects was built upon innovation in science and engineering. I see a city that will continue to innovate and reinvent itself and industries, derived from a talented and capable workforce.

Describe a key event or individual that had a profound effect on your career.

I’ve had the great opportunity to work with a Senior Scientist, Malcolm Packer, who has immensely increased my engineering knowledge.

What advice would you give to our scholarship recipients, who will be in attendance at the Gala?

Look for opportunities to be impactful professionally and in the community.

Articulate your vision for engineering in Rochester.

I envision the Rochester engineering community growing stronger by improving the ties between academia and business as well as fostering mentorship between senior and young engineers.

How have you used your engineering skills for community and professional leadership?

I use engineering for the betterment of the community every day. Whether it’s helping out local residents figure out if their property is affected by flood zone regulations, or performing sewer feasibility studies for communities that lack public sewers. As a municipal engineer, you get exposed to a multitude of challenges which may require unique engineering solutions.

What do you consider your greatest engineering achievement?

My greatest engineering achievement has been the successful design of a cured in place pipe liner system which was used to rehabilitate a deteriorated corrugated metal culvert on Buckland Creek. The evaluation included a hydrologic analysis which modeled the alternative’s impact on the floodway elevations of the creek.

Describe a key event or individual that had a profound effect on your career.

Without a doubt, my current boss and mentor Mike Guyon. Mike is one of the hardest working Professional Engineers I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Mike is the definition of lead by example.

What advice would you give to our scholarship recipients, who will be in attendance at the Gala?

Be curious and don’t be afraid to branch out and learn new skills that may be outside of your immediate field of study. It has been my experience that a well-rounded engineer makes for a great engineer.

Articulate your vision for engineering in Rochester.

As our nation’s aging infrastructure becomes a growing focal point, I see engineers playing a critical role in guiding the Rochester community to a safer, more connected and sustainable future.

How have you used your engineering skills for community and professional leadership?

I’ve used these skills at GM to lead their most advanced technology Fuel Cell program and in our community I have used them in my volunteering as a Scoutmaster, Girl’s Basketball coach, and as a Board member for NY BEST. What do you consider your greatest engineering achievement?

Leading the movement of Fuel Cell technology from Los Alamos National lab to GM, followed by 20 years of development and engineering leading to the world’s first 100 car prototype vehicle fleet.

Describe a key event or individual that had a profound effect on your career.

In 1990 I was at turning point in my career – stay at GM, leave and work with my brother, or take the lead on a yet defined fuel cell program. My wife convinced me that if I did not take the Fuel Cell position I would regret it in 20 years – the rest is history.

What advice would you give to our scholarship recipients, who will be in attendance at the Gala?

Find your passion and make it your career – don’t ever settle and don’t let anyone ever tell you it cannot be done. It will make for a very fulfilling life.

Articulate your vision for engineering in Rochester.

I would like to see the continued expansion and support of R&D moving to manufacturing of high tech products locally that will both keep and attract young professional people to our region and provide jobs at all levels in our community.

How have you used your engineering skills for community and professional leadership?

Civil engineering is the art of solving problems in the built environment. I believe you lead by engaging the community in decisions that impact their daily lives so that the resulting project serves them and provides an attractive and functional finished product that enhances their pride in their local environment and their sense of place.

What do you consider your greatest engineering achievement?

With the help of the great staff at the City Bureau of Engineering and Architecture being able to concurrently implement the design and construction of the Midtown Redevelopment, Port of Rochester Revitalization and the Inner Loop East Redevelopment Projects. Any one of these projects would strain the resources of a municipal engineering and architecture group but we found a way to keep these three important game changing projects moving forward.

Describe a key event or individual that had a profound effect on your career.

There is no doubt that I am the engineer I am today based on the mentoring of Salvatore LaBella whom I had the privilege of working for and with for 26 years. Sal taught me to listen and take a longer view on client and project development by taking care of the relationship first and knowing that from that relationship and trust good projects and additional work would be inevitable.

What advice would you give to our scholarship recipients, who will be in attendance at the Gala?

Make sure you work on projects or issues that you love and are passionate about. If you love what you do and feel your work has value you will satisfy yourself and only then will you flourish in whatever you do. While you may not have love or passion in your work every day you will not be happy or successful in the long term without it.

Articulate your vision for engineering in Rochester.

Engineering in Rochester will always be what drives the community and provides the jobs and built environment for the future.

Rochester has always been a center for innovation. With Photonics and Healthcare at the forefront there are many opportunities and needs for engineering skills in every facet of the City’s resurgence.

The current energy in the City and our dreams of a better future rest on the ability to leverage our strong engineering heritage and attract the best and brightest engineering minds to take advantage of the opportunities and resources the region has fought so hard for and now must take advantage of. We need to strive to make Rochester a place that engineers want to call home.

How have you used your engineering skills for community and professional leadership?

- To bring focus, organization, and communications skills to all assignments and areas of responsibility.

What do you consider your greatest engineering achievement?

- Requirement for industrial water pollution control facilities in the eleven county Region 8 of NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

- Leadership of the Project team for the design and implementation of the RG&E Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Emergency Alert System. Still operational after 32 years.

Describe a key event or individual that had a profound effect on your career.

Enrolling in the 5 year Drexel job cooperative program that provided over 19 months of job experience prior to graduation and entry into the full time work environment. Priceless.

What advice would you give to our scholarship recipients, who will be in attendance at the Gala?

Maintain balance in your life - insuring an overall balance between job, family/ community, and personal needs.

Articulate your vision for engineering in Rochester.

Continued private-public support for the development of innovative new and improved engineering products and services.

The Limited Monopoly® Avoid Admitting Prior Art in Your Patent Application Take the Path Less Traveled

Your Invention in Words

A patent application is, simply put, your invention in words. While the patent application describes your invention in detail, it should also describe what makes your invention different than anything else that has been done before. A compelling patent application that is more likely to make it through the long and arduous pathway known as prosecution includes a description of the background of well traveled paths that others have taken to unsuccessfully solve a certain problem followed by a detailed description of the new invention and how it solves problems that others were not able to solve in the past. An over-zealous patent drafter that describes your invention dozens of different ways and with numerous embodiments usually creates value in your patent application. BUT, should that same zealousness prevail in drafting the background section of your patent application, problems could be lurking in the shrubbery1.

Background of the Invention and the Forbidden Donut

A patent application is arranged in sections, as set forth in 37 CFR §1.77. The “Background of the Invention” section should set forth background information leading up to your invention including a discussion of the related art known to the Applicant, any references to specific related art and problems that are solved by the Applicant’s invention2. Related art may also be called “Background Art,” but should never be called “Prior Art.” 10 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER MARCH 2016

Over the years, and with a good number of court decisions helping to create such a taboo, the term Prior Art has evolved into a forbidden term when it comes to writing patent applications. The courts have decided that if an Applicant refers to something as “Prior Art” in their patent application, it is just that3, an admission by the Applicant. An admission in a patent application that something is prior art makes it available as prior art against the claims. Admitted prior art can, and oftentimes is, used by patent examiners in claim rejections. It is far easier for an examiner to use prior art that has been admitted on the record by that over-zealous patent drafter rather than conduct a search for an applicable reference.

Suffice it to say referring to another invention in a patent application as “Prior Art” should be painstakingly avoided, like Homer’s forbidden donut.

Patent Drawings Labeled as Prior Art

In years past, many patent applications contained one or more figures that were labeled as “Prior Art.” The rationale to do so was that it was easy to compare the old prior art with the new and novel invention that was also depicted in the figures and reach the conclusion that the invention was novel. However, as court decisions related to the interpretation of prior art began to mold and shape patent preparation and prosecution, this practice was quickly dropped. The old saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words” became very relevant, as there were now a thousand more words for an Examiner to misinterpret or mischaracterize and thus reject on.

Avoiding use of the term Prior Art is sound practice when drafting a patent application, and avoiding references to specific prior inventions, even if they are not specifically called Prior Art, should be routine when drafting a patent application. Of course there are exceptions, but most patent practitioners will eliminate references to other patents and inventions (patented or not) in their patent applications, and some even go so far as to keep the background section of the patent application terse and devoid of all references to previous inventions. While limiting or eliminating references to previous inventions in a patent application may be good practice to avoid an “Applicants Admitted Prior Art (AAPA)” based rejection, there still remains a responsibility to disclose to the United States Patent Office information that is considered “material to patentability.”

Each individual associated with the filing and prosecution of a patent application has this duty of candor, as defined by 37 CFR 1.56. These individuals are defined as a) each inventor named in the application; b) each agent or attorney who prepares or prosecutes the application; and c) every other person who is substantively involved in the preparation or prosecution of the application and who is associated with the inventor, assignee, or anyone to whom there is an obligation to assign the application.

Information is considered “material to patentability” when a) it establishes by itself or in combination with other information a prima facie case of unpatentability of a claim in the application, or b) it refutes or is inconsistent with a position the applicant takes in asserting an argument of patentability, or opposing an argument of unpatentability relied on by the Office. Fulfilling this obligation normally involves providing all references that are material to patentability in an Information Disclosure Statement and filing it with the USPTO.

Taking Care When Drafting the Background Section

There is no legal requirement to mention or describe prior art in the Background Section of a patent application. Thus it is best to avoid doing so and eliminate the possibility of rejections based on “Applicants Admitted Prior Art (AAPA).” Even if the term prior art is not explicitly used in a patent application, referring to something as “commonly known,” “traditional,” “conventional,” or “commonly known in the industry” are examples of terms that could be considered admitted prior art by an Examiner, and should also be avoided.

Consider instead preparing a brief background of the invention section in your next patent application with no specific mention of the inventions of others. You can describe in general terms the current state of technology related to your invention, or perhaps give a historical account of the invention of the first widget, which is in no way related to your new high tech smart widget or your iWidget with fragile touch screen display. You could also describe the current market for your invention, or how things are done manually, with the world just waiting for your smart widget to be released. There are many ways to provide a meaningful background section in your patent application that expounds on the unmet need that your invention addresses without creating admitted prior art that may well be used against the claimed patentability of your invention. A careless choice of words can create endless headaches in prosecution. A seasoned patent practitioner can draft a patent application using techniques that won’t necessarily guarantee a patent, but can certainly increase the odds for success.

What's News New Lake Mead Intake Named Among World’s Top Engineering Feats The recently completed drinking water intake constructed to protect Southern Nevada residents from continuing drought has been nominated for the 2016 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award by the prestigious American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Listed among six projects selected from around the world, Lake Mead Intake No. 3 is the world’s deepest subaqueous tunnel and is considered one of the most challenging tunneling projects ever undertaken. Requiring construction of a three-mile concrete-lined tunnel beneath the lake bed, the project required excavation at unprecedented hydrostatic pressure caused by the weight of hundreds of feet of lake water above the tunnel alignment. As a 1,700-ton tunnel boring machine inched its way through difficult geologic conditions for several years, workers constructed a railroad track in its wake to remove material and deliver supplies. In December 2014, the machine docked with an intake structure deep within the lake that was secured to the bottom by more than 1,000 truckloads of concrete. After more than 15,000 feet of underground tunneling spanning three years, the crew carefully mined through the intake’s port within millimeters of the center mark.

“Together with the designer and builder of the intake project, we are honored to be considered for this award, which represents the pinnacle of modern civil engineering achievement,” said Marcus Jensen, Director of Engineering for the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). “Lake Mead Intake No. 3 has been the most ambitious project ever undertaken by the SNWA. During the course of the project, our team focus was singularly on the task at hand. However, once the work was done, we had the opportunity to step back and consider the challenges we overcame and the magnitude of what we accomplished. It is quite humbling.”

Past award winners include Hoover Dam, the World Trade Center and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. The ASCE will announce the winner March 17 in Virginia.

The SNWA is a not-for-profit agency that manages water conservation, water quality and water resource issues for Southern Nevada. The certification comes from the Building Commissioning Association (BCA) and demonstrates mastery of the profession. Commitment is to arrive by 12:30 at St. John Fisher College, for orientation, training (lunch included), begin judging about 1:30, interview 6-10 students/projects, develop relative score using a well established rubric, then discuss the projects with other professionals on the judging team to select appropriate recognition. SWBR Architects & St. John’s Honored with an Environments for Aging Design Showcase Award of Merit for Brickstone Project Brickstone by St. John’s was the only project selected for the program’s highest award Brickstone by St. John’s was built to be something different. The collaboration between St. John’s and SWBR Architects — two leaders in their respective industries in the Rochester region — was designed to reinvent the concept of senior living by embracing new urbanism. Those efforts have resulted in Brickstone by St. John’s receiving the Award of Merit from Environments for Aging (EFA) for its 20th annual Design Showcase. SWBR Architects served as architect of record for the Brickstone project.

“We are proud that all of the hard work in creating Brickstone by St. John’s is being recognized, and thrilled that we are able to share it with the team at SWBR,” said Paul Bartlett, vice president of senior housing at St. John’s. “Brickstone has been a vision brought to life both aesthetically and functionally. It allows residents to live their lives freely and comfortably.”

Nearly 50 projects were submitted in this year’s showcase, an annual review of projects in senior-care settings, from conceptual designs to newly completed buildings. The jury panel included architects, interior designers, providers and consultants.

University of Rochester Celebrates Grand Reopening of Gift and Specialty Shop; SWBR Architects Served as Design Architect The University of Rochester celebrated the grand opening of its new 1,900-square-foot gift and specialty shop in the Golisano Children’s Hospital December 7 with SWBR Architects and community members.

SWBR served as the project’s designer and architect.

The firm was tasked with relocating the original gift shop and the specialty shop in the hospital to a shared space where staff, patients and families could receive convenient, centrally located access to specialty care items, such as hairpieces and prosthetics, as well as gifts, snack items and more.

“We knew the store needed an upscale, street-of-shops look, so we incorporated rich, organic colors and wood tunes,” said Diana Pannone, senior interior designer. “We used hints of the original children’s hospital finishes, but with an independent creative flare. The visual connection to the Healing Garden, another project we partnered on with the hospital, was an important element incorporated into the interior design, and those elements can be seen throughout the store.”

Project challenges included physical limitations and size of the space, achieving a visual connection between the main corridor of the hospital and the Gift Shop’s interior and creating entrances to both the Gift Shop and Specialty Shop that are visually interesting and sensitive to the adjacent spaces and finishes.

The design team flanked the Specialty Shop with the programmed office functions, allowing them to isolate the retail space and maximize its

Brooks Landing Wins 2016 APWA Project of the Year Award T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the Brooks Landing project designed for the City of Rochester, New York, by T.Y. Lin International (TYLI) has been named the 2016 Project of the Year in the Historical Restoration/Preservation category by the Genesee Valley Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA).

The state and locally-funded Brooks Landing project encompassed the design and construction of a park gateway, a roadway, and trail improvements to a portion of the Genesee Valley Park at Brooks Landing.

The project served as an opportunity to further rejuvenate the City’s 19th Ward neighborhood and strengthen public access to the waterfront, park, and trail system from this district, as well as the University of Rochester and the Brooks Landing private development. The APWA Project of the Year Award recognizes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects and is a testament to the partnership between TYLI, Ramsey Constructors, Inc., and the City of Rochester.

The Brooks Landing project stands out for its historical component.

The Genesee Valley Park is one of the oldest parks in the area and news from professional firms

was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the famed landscape architect most notably known as the co-designer of New York City’s Central Park. Considering the historical significance of this Olmsted-designed landscape, a major focus of the project centered on enhancing and restoring its features, while respecting its history and mitigating the impacts of development.

TYLI provided site planning and design and landscape architecture for the park, as well as transportation and traffic engineering services for the reconfiguration of the former South Plymouth Avenue at the intersection of Elmwood Avenue. The team developed park and trail signage; designed landscape and viewshed improvements; and envisioned and prepared a juried public art competition. Additional public enhancements were woven into the final design through decorative seating, lighting, and a reconstructed river overlook with decorative railings. Given the project’s proximity to a residential neighborhood, the University of Rochester, and private development, TYLI’s work involved significant public involvement initiatives which enabled area residents to contribute input to the final design.

Gibsonville Stream Restoration Project Recognized as APWA Environmental Project of the Year The Genesee Valley Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) has recognized the Gibsonville Stream Restoration, a key project at engineering firm Erdman Anthony, as the 2015 Environmental Project of the Year in the less than $5 million category.

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation called upon the Erdman Anthony team and its partner, McMahon and Mann, to provide schematic design, design development and construction document preparation for the project in Letchworth State Park.

That effort addressed a deteriorating 90 inch-diameter corrugated metal pipe, a segment of failing (sliding) roadway embankment downstream of the 90-inch culvert, and asphalt pavement reconstruction to restore roadway integrity and ride quality.

The final project design, permitted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, resolved all the issues and restored an open stream channel by filling and raising the stream.

The awards committee of APWA’s Genesee Valley Branch selected the winners from a six-county area that encompasses Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans and Wayne counties. q 26 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER MARCH 2016

Campus News RIT and Pictometry Expand Drone Research Partnership and Establish a UAS Outdoor Netted Enclosure Lab

New facility will help advance development of unmanned aircraft systems and solve issue of university’s proximity to the Greater Rochester International Airport Rochester Institute of Technology is partnering with Pictometry to build an Outdoor Netted Enclosure Lab for research and academic coursework related to unmanned aircraft systems, also referred to as drones.

The enclosure, one of the first installed at a Northeast university, is part of an expanded research partnership between the university and the Rochester-based imaging company to advance development and testing of unmanned aircraft system technologies.

“This lab will allow students and researchers alike to build systems and fly and test them without the burden of researching regulations and safety issues related to open, outdoor drone flights,” said Frank Giuffrida, executive vice president of engineering at EagleView Technology Corp. Pictometry is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EagleView. “The netted enclosure lab is an ideal test environment that allows full access to GPS signals that are essential for drone operation.

“In addition to advancing our research efforts, the lab also provides a great opportunity for RIT students to learn more about UAS technology and the science behind it, such as imaging capture, flight control and sense and avoidance.”

The outdoor, 100-by-100-by-50-foot enclosure will be located adjacent to the RIT campus and open all year. Researchers could incorporate important test variables such as the impact of weather conditions on signal processing, for example, into research projects. The new enclosure would also meet Federal Aviation Administration requirements stating unmanned aircraft cannot fly within five miles of an airport. (RIT’s campus is located within this vicinity; just under five miles from the Greater Rochester International Airport.) Regulations currently do not permit commercial, unmanned aircraft above 400 feet without certification, and these allowances are given primarily to law enforcement or the military.

“You can fly the drones indoors, but much of the research relies on how the global positioning system is used on board, and you don’t get the weather elements. Both can be very useful in regard to designs for specific applications,” said Agamemnon Crassidis, associate professor of mechanical engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. He will manage the structure and much of the research and testing expected to take place at the outdoor facility. “With this type of enclosure, it’s like flying indoors, so you won’t need any special certifications from the FAA.” The merger of EagleView Technology Corp. and Pictometry International in January 2013 created a company with technological solutions in global information systems, measurement and analysis, and provides powerful high-resolution aerial imagery and analytical tools for assessment, public safety, emergency response and overall visualization needs. Some of the imagery captured by Pictometry is enabled by unmanned aircraft systems, and the company has been involved in advancing that technology capacity through projects with the NUAIR Alliance and RIT. NUAIR, the Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance, is a group of more than 40 companies and universities in New York and Massachusetts selected in December 2013 as one of six FAA test sites in the U.S. The alliance conducts research to improve unmanned aircraft technology and will recommend safe integration of unmanned aircraft in the national airspace system. Seventeen universities are involved with RIT and Massachusetts Institute of Technology as regional academic leaders.

“We’ll have this facility at RIT, so if there are customers that come through NUAIR who want to fly right away, we’ll have this facility available,” said Crassidis, who is RIT’s representative on NUAIR. He specializes in aircraft control systems and has worked for aerospace companies such as Calspan, an affiliate of the Flight Research Facility in Buffalo, N.Y., specifically part of the team that designed flight simulation systems for jet fighter pilots.

Western Specialty Contractors Restores Historic Receiving Vault for President Abraham Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, Illinois Restoration completed for 150th anniversary and re-enactment of Lincoln's funeral

Western Specialty Contractors Springfield, IL Branch (formerly named Western Waterproofing Company) was honored with restoring the historic receiving vault that once held the bodies of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln and his son, Willie, following Lincoln's funeral service on May 4, 1865 in Springfield, Illinois. The bodies of Lincoln and his son, who died at age eleven in the White House, rested in the receiving vault until Dec. 21, 1865 when they were moved to another temporary vault.

The vault, which had served as a temporary tomb while burial plans were made or if a grave could not be dug due to frozen ground, is located at the base of a hill, north of President Lincoln's tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Due to its location at a low spot in the cemetery, the vault was subject to water penetration which resulted in major deterioration. The vault's restoration needed to be completed in time for a two-day ceremony on May 2-3, 2015 to re-enact and commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's funeral.

Western Specialty Contractors, partnered with project engineer Coombe-Bloxdorf, a Division of Fehr-Graham & Associates, began the five-month restoration project on Dec. 1, 2014.

The initial phase of the project involved channeling water away from the vault with the installation of drains. Once that task was completed, the general contractor began excavating the area around the vault in preparation for Western's scope of work which included waterproofing, repairs to the stone facade, and restoration of the marble.

Constructed in the 1860's using outdated materials and technology, Western crews encountered more extensive deterioration to the vault than they had originally anticipated. During the excavation around the outside of the historic site, it was discovered that the walls making up the vault's exterior were in such poor condition (bricks were deteriorating, voids were present in the masonry wall, and stone infill had been used) that waterproofing could not be applied directly to the surface, and an alternate means of repair was necessary to prepare the vault for the waterproofing application.

Western crews used their extensive experience in historic restoration to find a solution to the challenge.

"Because this was a historic site, the customer did not want us using a lot of new means and methods to restore it," said Springfield Project Manager Josh Woolard. "We had to come up with a scope of work that would repair the walls without compromising the integrity of the historic structure. We formulated a system using a low cement 30 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER MARCH 2016

ratio mortar and brick infill in areas where the brick had deteriorated away from the wall. After infilling the voids in the walls, we applied a layer of the low cement ratio mortar to the entire wall surface to create a smooth surface with no protrusions that could penetrate through the bentonite sheet waterproofing."

Another challenge to the project was finding a quality match for the stone replacements on the serpentine retaining walls that extended outward away from the vault entrance. Due to the age of the vault, the original stone material used was no longer available, and Western crews had to find a suitable, alternate material that would closely match the existing stones and meet the customer's needs. Many mock-ups of stone fabrication were required to find the perfect match.

"These walls contain two curves, one inward and one outward. Due to this fact, it was not only a matter of finding the correct length and depth of the stone, but also finding the radius of the curves in order to fabricate stone that would fit into the voids created by the removal of the stones," said Woolard. "In order to find the radius in the stone, we had to remove the existing stone. By first creating a template on Styrofoam of the gaps created by the removal of the stones, we were able to use computer software to find the radius of the curves within the wall."

Western also used other special methods to re-create the unique beaded joint evident in the original masonry construction.

"Unlike most joints in masonry construction, these joints were not concave or flat joints. Instead, they were beaded joints within the masonry. In order to achieve this effect, we used special tools and procedures which allowed the mortar to hold its shape while it was formed. This process provided a less workable material and was more time consuming for even small amounts of tuck pointing, but the end result is a structurally-sound, historical replication of how the vault was originally constructed," said Woolard.

Western crews completed their restoration work by carefully cleaning the tile floor and marble walls and ceiling inside the vault chamber using Prosoco 942 cleaner with a low pressure rinse. Additionally, crews re-attached two marble doors on the loculi, or shelves set into the wall of the vault where a coffin or body is stored.

The restoration project was completed on May 1, 2015 in time for the commemoration and funeral reenactment ceremonies. Western took great care in respectfully preserving not only the look of the receiving vault, but also the method by which it was originally constructed. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) are not traditionally identified in standard internal Vapor Analysis (IVA™) but can also have an effect on long term reliability. Procedures for identifying these compounds will be discussed.

As a follow up to last month’s article, I have the great pleasure of serving on the Donald C. Stone Center Program Council for APWA National. The Donald C. Stone Center for Leadership Excellence provides four levels of management development through a combination of interaction with a dedicated mentor, classroom experience the APWA Institutes, personal assessment exercises, and an issue based special project. The center was formed to provide a career path for leadership excellence at all levels of management. The training provides leadership credentials for Level 1: Public Works Supervisor, Level 2: Public Works Manager, Level 3: Public Works Executive, and Level 4: Public Works Fellow.

This is a new and exciting opportunity for APWA members to prepare for a rewarding future in public works and to develop strong leaders for our future. Each level has a unique and varied set of prerequisite educational and work experiences to be considered. After a review by the Program Council, applicants begin an exciting journey with a mentor who has already received the applicable education and certifications. An important first step involves the creation of a Public Works Institute to provide training for supervisors and managers to help prepare them for the leadership. Each Institute is to provide 11 units of training including Supervisory Techniques & Skills, Management Skills, Communication Skills, Leadership Skills, Customer Orientation Skills, Legal Impacts of Law, Finance, Public Works Operations, and Creating a Future. There are several Institutes across the US, but, sadly, New York does not have one at this time. The NY Chapter of APWA is working to develop an Institute with the cooperation of our in state universities and colleges. With the challenges facing public works in the coming years, this is a noble and critical effort to insure that our leaders have the tools needed to succeed. Go to www.APWA.net to learn more.

My role in the Program Council is to review the applicant’s credentials for admission. The council is very dedicated and critiques each application to insure that each submission meets the minimum qualifications. I met with the most recent class of the DCS in Phoenix and each graduate spoke highly of the

process and the information they attained. The NY Chapter has a PW Fellow in Kris Dimmick from Watertown (Central Branch). He is available for anyone who wants to learn more about the DCS Center.

ABCD 2015 BRIDGE DESIGN AWARDS The Western New York Chapter of the Association for Bridge Construction and Design is requesting submissions from the membership for our 2015 Bridge Design Awards program. The Award honors owners, designers and contractors for outstanding bridge projects throughout Western New York. Submissions may involve new or rehabilitated bridges, single or multi-span structures, which have been opened to traffic in 2015.

The awards are presented at our Annual Meeting at the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, to be held May 19, 2016.

Each year two bridges are selected as the Bridge of the Year based on criteria listed below. These bridges exemplify innovative and/or unusual techniques, design and/or construction methods. There are two categories for the Bridge Awards:

Bridge Cost - Under $2,000,000 Bridge Cost - Over $2,000,000 All submissions will be judged on the project merits (design, requirements, use of innovative technology, schedule and coordination, site conditions, constructability and complexity) and the Entry Documentation (narrative description, representative photos, illustrative sketches, project features and overall entry presentation.)

One of the most rewarding aspects of being Chair of the Rochester Section of IEEE has been the network of talented individuals I have met. I have had the pleasure of nominating several remarkable individuals who have either received or were the runner-up for the RES Engineer of the Year Award including: Kevin Parker, Lalit Mestha, and Jay Kunzler. It is my greatest pleasure to congratulate Rob Clark and Matt Sidley as the 2015 RES EOY and YEOY recipients – both nominated by the Rochester IEEE Section! Mr. Barry Silverstein Barry Silverstein is a graduate of Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester and was employed by Eastman Kodak Company for 28 years. During this tenure at Kodak Barry developed and commercialized optical-mechanical-electrical systems for technologies as diverse as Compact Disk recording, commercial space based telescopes, film projection illumination systems, laser printing of printing plates, laser printing of graphic arts proofers and digital projection technologies. Barry was the primary inventor, system developer, and manager for Kodak’s Laser Projection Technology which was the world’s first Digital Cinema quality laser projector demonstrated to the Hollywood community.

Barry is credited with 59 US patents and 9 industry publications. Barry is now the Senior Director of Hardware at IMAX leading the development of IMAX’s laser projection head.

Topic: The IMAX Laser Projection System: From 0 to Insane in Under 2 Years Out of the ashes of Kodak’s Entertainment Imaging business was born the world’s first cinema-quality laser projection prototype. Learn about the creation of the newly formed IMAX business unit, IMAX Rochester. Follow the technical journey (adventure) of taking a prototype 10,000 lumen, 2k resolution laser projector and turbo charging it to deliver six times the brightness in order to light screens that are more than 100 feet wide at 4k resolution. The projection system born out of this effort is currently delivering stunning images at IMAX’s most iconic locations around the globe…. a mere two years later. The revolutionary optical-mechanical system is unlike anything ever built for a projector and was designed in Rochester. It is currently in production in Canada by a simultaneously created custom assembly line. IMAX, in conjunction with local suppliers, managed to deliver this system on time while working across three countries and two continents. The performance of this system has exceeded expectations and is receiving accolades from the industries experts.

MPES Helps Students Learn About STEM This past February, the Monroe PE Society (MPES) helped students learn more about STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics by hosting two events for middle school and high school students. MATHCOUNTS was held on February 6 and TEAMS was held on February 27.

This year seems to be flying by and even though February has been a busy month for us, I take great comfort in the possibility of an early arrival for Spring.

On February 5th the Rochester ASHRAE Chapter had its 59th Annual Valentine Dinner Dance at the Stratthallan. A big ‘Thank-you’ goes out to Jody and Matthew McGarry who celebrated their 23rd anniversary of their 1 year commitment for hosting this event.

They did a fantastic job, as usual, and a great time was had by all. That was followed by our February 8th lunch meeting which was well attended, but sadly it was our final meeting at Mario’s.

I would like to thank Mr. Robert Feduik, Regional Software Manager with Carrier Corporation, for his presentation on Building Load Analysis.

Our March program will be a tour of the UR Strong Hospital Central Plant. We hope to see you there and invite you to come and enjoy Making Connections!

As the program year is winding down, we prepare for the BIG golf/picnic on May 9th, and we have the honor of hosting the ASHRAE Region I Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) August 18-20, 2016. Our Chapter is currently seeking sponsorships to defray the costs associated with the CRC in an effort to reduce the costs for attendees of this event. Typically 100-150 Region I ASHRAE members along with spouses and families attend the CRC. Black Hole Recoils: Searching for Bouncing Supermassive Black Holes in Galaxies Presented by Dr. Andy Robinson, Professor, Rochester Institute of Technology

Abstract:

It is now well established that supermassive black holes (SMBH; which have masses of 1 - 1000 million times the mass of the Sun) reside at the centers of essentially all large galaxies. The largest galaxies grow by merging with, or "cannibalizing" other galaxies, which results in the formation of binary SMBHs. Theoretical calculations based on General Relativity predict that such SMBH pairs will themselves merge, emitting strong gravitational waves as they do so, and in the process, causing the newly merged SMBH to recoil.

The recoil "kick" causes the SMBH to oscillate within the host galaxy, or even, in extreme cases, ejects it completely. This exotic phenomenon is of great interest as a test of General Relativity and also has potentially profound implications for our understanding of galaxy evolution, but has not yet been confirmed by observations. In this talk, I'll explain why we believe that SMBH recoil should happen relatively frequently, but is also difficult to see. I'll outline some techniques astronomers are using to detect "kicked" SMBH and discuss some of the best candidates found to date, as

well other recent results from my group and others.

Biography:

Dr. Andy Robinson is a Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Rochester Institute of Technology and also the Director of the Astrophysical Sciences and Technology Ph.D. program. Apart from searching the Universe for kicked black holes, his research interests encompass many other aspects of the interactions between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. With his collaborators and students, he uses data gathered at many of the largest optical/ infrared and radio telescopes around the world, as well as space observatories such as the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes.

Dr Robinson obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Manchester in England, in 1985. After spells as a postdoc at the European Southern Observatory headquarters in Munich, Germany, and as a Royal Society Research Fellow at the Institute of Astronomy of Cambridge University, he was appointed to a faculty position at the University of Hertfordshire. He crossed the Atlantic in 2003 to join the Physics faculty at RIT.

Campus News RIT Announces Strategic Investments in Four Research Areas Multidisciplinary teams to focus on cybersecurity, health care technology, photonics and unmanned aerial vehicle imaging

To advance its focus on conducting internationally distinguished research, Rochester Institute of Technology has chosen four initiatives to receive strategic investments.

These strategic initiatives, chosen through a rigorous internal process that looked at 26 research proposals, will each receive up to $1 million, payable over five years, on the condition that the projects meet their annual review goals. The projects will also receive funding through matching commitments made by deans, department heads, center directors and team members.

“The response from the RIT community to our call for research proposals was tremendous,” said Ryne Raffaelle, vice president for research and associate provost. “We received proposals from interdisciplinary teams that literally represented every college and institute on campus. The quality of the proposals was outstanding and necessitated a thorough, multi-stage process that involved both internal and external reviews by a variety of impartial stakeholders to identify the most meritorious proposals.”

•Remote Sensing with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: An interdisciplinary team from imaging science, engineering, public policy and mechanical engineering technology within the colleges of Science, Liberal Arts, Kate Gleason College of Engineering and College of Applied Science and Technology will work on challenges facing this industry from integrating UAVs into the national airspace to make better use of the high quality visual data collected in a variety of disciplines.

Teams submitting proposals for strategic funding awards were required to show how their research would build on current faculty strengths and existing resources, advance RIT’s reputation and reflect a growing significance in society, as demonstrated by relevance to funding agencies and industries. The goal: to show how this work would enable RIT to make unique and high impact contributions.

The proposals were judged on that criteria, as well as on their potential to receive sponsored research funding and garner philanthropic giving, and corporate and government investment in hopes that they will help RIT grow its sponsored research portfolio.

The four proposals receiving investments from RIT are: • Cybersecurity: This team, consisting of 25 faculty members from five colleges (B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, Kate Gleason College of Engineering, Saunders College of Business and the colleges of Science and Liberal Arts), will research sociotechnical approaches to cybersecurity. Their goal is to look at cybersecurity from a more proactive position by studying how such elements as human behavior, economic incentives and social influences on design of systems and software interact with technology and can be incorporated to develop better protections.

• Personalized Healthcare Technology: This team will research ways to enhance personalized care and access through mobile and wearable technologies that integrate new media design and leverage data, behavioral and social sciences. The goal is to develop interventions that promote health in population disparities and provide rigorous evidence that mobile technologies can enhance health and prevent disease.

•The Future Photon Initiative: A team of 15 researchers from RIT’s colleges and research centers in engineering, science, business and design will develop advanced photonics applications and apply them to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems in science, national security, advance manufacturing, communications, information technology, energy, health care and medicine.

RIT sponsored research grew by 18 percent in 2015, reaching a record $62 million in funding. RIT received 356 new awards from a variety of state, federal, corporate and foundation sponsors. Federal funding was at an all-time high with the National Science Foundation providing $13 million and the National Institutes of Health providing $3 million.

Raffaelle said these initiatives reinforce an important “difference maker” set forth in RIT’s 2015-2025 strategic plan, “Greatness Through Difference.” The plan called for increasing the university’s research efforts through focused investment in interdisciplinary and trans disciplinary areas, marking the first time in RIT’s 187-year history that the word “research” was incorporated into a strategic plan vision statement. The vision statement reads: “RIT will be a great world university whose academic portfolio, research agenda, and educational model align with the shifting needs of a complex planet.”

Earlier this year, The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education changed RIT from “Masters – Comprehensive” to “Doctoral University - Limited Research Activity.” This change occurs when a university graduates more than 20 Ph.D. degrees per year, a figure that RIT has exceeded in recent years. In May 2015, RIT awarded 33 doctoral degrees in seven Ph.D. programs, the most in its history.

Top Awards Given to Students’ Bio-Separations Research at National Chemical Engineering Conference Findings related to microfluidics and lab-on-chip devices will help advance techniques to separate biological cells and assess diseases Three students from Rochester Institute of Technology were recognized for their research findings about improvements to bio-separation techniques for lab-on-a-chip medical devices.

They were awarded top honors in several categories in the undergraduate and graduate research competitions at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers annual meeting and conference in November in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Alexandra LaLonde and Maria Romero-Creel, both undergraduates in RIT’s biomedical engineering program, placed first and second, respectively, in the Undergraduate Research Posters Competition-Separations Division. More than 300 research projects by undergraduate students from universities across the country were presented in this competition and were judged by university professors and researchers from different research areas.

Mario Saucedo-Espinosa, a doctoral student in the university’s microsystems program, placed first at the AES Electrophoresis Society graduate student poster competition, part of the overall AIChE conference. These posters were judged by scientists in the area of microfluidics and electrophoresis.

The students’ work introduced improved microfluidic techniques with the potential to separate larger and rare cells found in fluids such as blood, reducing the time to separate these particles and significantly lowering the time that biological cells were exposed to negative dielectrophoretic effects. Techniques for separating fluid samples are useful in areas where rapid results are essential such as testing for food and water safety or clinical analysis of disease.

“In my almost 11 years as a faculty member, this is the first time that I had 100 percent of the students win awards. I took three students who presented eight papers at the conference and they all took awards at the conference.

It is unheard of,” said Blanca LapizcoEncinas, associate professor of biomedical engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. She mentors all three students in her Microscale BioSeparations Laboratory developing techniques in microfluidics to separate cells so that scientists and clinicians campus news

can better analyze diseases through technology such as lab-on-a-chip devices— highly sophisticated laboratories on microchips. This work is part of her National Science Foundation grantfunded project “Rapid and Dynamic Cell Assessments in Dielectrophoresis-based Microfluidic Devices.” These devices have multiple channels where fluid samples are assessed after being exposed to electrical currents that cause the bioparticles to separate for more efficient analysis. The studentresearchers have been involved in advancing device system designs and in determining the threshold of electrical fields applied to adequately manipulate the fluids but also ensuring that live cells are not damaged.

“Ours is a small lab, compared to some of the others at the conference, but we are producing as much or more experiments and journal articles about this work,” said SaucedoEspinosa, who is from Monterrey, Mexico, and in his final year of the doctoral program.

“People were impressed with our results and the quality of the work. We are trying to fill in the gaps in the field of science so we are designing devices that others have not been able to do so far. Our group has developed a system where we can separate cells faster and with less electrical treatment. This means less damage to the cells.”

The results were some of the first seen confirming techniques and processes that preserve cell integrity, said Romero-Creel.

“Some of the questions the judges asked were about theory and how exactly the devices work because we are definitely in a field that is very specialized,” said the fourth-year student from Newton, Mass. “Our projects focus on preserving cell integrity and being able to maintain appropriate cell properties to continue to grow them or do other important tests.”

it’s nice to get other opinions from people who actually do the same work. These techniques will be good for diagnostics and clinical relevance, and this system can be used for something as applicable as detecting cancer cells.

“It was also nice to talk to people at the conference who had such a wealth of knowledge in this area, not only for the experience, but also to be able to talk to others who were familiar with what we were working on,” said LaLonde, who is from Syracuse, N.Y. She will graduate from RIT this May. Students need to have both an understanding of engineering and biological theory, but also the math modeling necessary to assess different designs and processes, said Lapizco-Encinas.

“They spend as much time at the computer as they do with a microscope and preparing experiments. They all worked really hard and it shows,” she added. “I value their level of professionalism and dedication. The degree of complexity keeps increasing because we keep learning and using these techniques to implement our next steps. There were some struggles, but kept pushing; these students are smart and resilient.” q
