President’s Message Jon Kriegel, ASME Fellow RES President 2016 - 17 There is an interesting bit of “Toy” history that makes Rochester a fun city, particularly at Christmas time. For many years the little toy piano, now famous worldwide, was built right here. Schoenhut dates back to 1872, and by 1912, was the largest toy manufacturer in America. More recently, Pianist Margaret Leng Tan, famous for her TV appearances using a Schoenhut Piano, refers to it as the "Steinway® of Toy Pianos."

Rochester is also the home of the Toy Crafter. Shown here with a spinning Top, Don Olney, owner of the Company, also makes animal figurines.

Over the years the ASME has run tours at both of these Toy Manufacturers and, in keeping with this Christmas Spirit, this month the ASME will pay the addmission, for its members and their families, to visit the Rochester Museum and Science Center.

Call for Nominations 2016 Engineer of the Year 2016 Kate Gleason Young Engineer of the Year and

2016 Engineers of Distinction A couple of years ago the RES Board of Directors introduced a streamlined nomination form.

A simple initial form allows an individual or organization to nominate a candidate. The RES committee will then contact the nominator if the candidate progresses to the next phase. At that point, a final form will be used to gather essential details from the nominator and candidate which will be used to determine our finalists.

The RES will select and recognize the finalists for the Engineer of the Year, Young Engineer of the Year, and Engineers of Distinction Awards in a variety of public venues and media during the weeks before the Gala. The Award recipients will be introduced on Saturday April 8, 2017 during the Gala at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

Rochester History Continuing with the historical sampling of the earlier writings on behalf of the Rochester Engineering Society, the years following "The Great War," into and through the “Great Depression,” continued to be a time of reaching out for the maturing Society, both locally and nationally. The meeting minutes describe a series of technical discussions and presentations intended to broaden the technical horizons of the membership (especially the CE's, ME's and EE's). The RES affiliated itself with a number of National technical societies, adopted local Affiliated Societies, frequently held joint meetings with them and continued taking action on a growing list of public matters.

Certain issues of standardization, some crucial to public safety, became the responsibility of the RES and its affiliates. In the pervasive economic downturn of the “Great Depression," the magazine offered classified advertising for unemployed engineers, technicians and draftsmen and took other steps to try to deal with the crisis. Still, it continued its effort to shape the function, purpose and infrastructure of the City of Rochester, and beyond. Soon, war would again affect the Society, taking away many of its leaders while providing opportunities for others to step forward to fill these vacancies. In an effort to provide even greater perspective on the happenings and concerns of the day, a synopsis, featuring selected items from "The Rochester Engineer" has become an integral part of this series. The Second World War and the Korean Conflict are now history. These experiences have changed the face and, no doubt, the future of the community. The Rochester municipal leadership and the industrial community have become immersed in the cold-war, growth economy.

Along with the usual listing of RES weekly luncheon meetings, this issue provided, for the first time, a chronological schedule of technically-focused events in the Rochester Community, including 19 meetings, tours, luncheons and dinners. Related to that, on October 1st, RES President, Bernard F. Perry, called the first meeting of a group of organizations interested in forming a Council of Engineering and Technical Societies. Attending this meeting, chaired by Keith W. Amish, were 30 representatives of 19 different technical societies and groups; from automotive engineers to safety engineers. The exchange of ideas and concerns led to a consensus that a survey should be circulated, toward developing an agenda for a December 3rd meeting on the subject. The RES Tuesday luncheon series for November included Dr. John Graham, RES 1st VP and Dean of the U of R College of Engineering, Neil Gallagher, Sr. VP, Rumrill Company, Randall Sargent, Acct. Executive Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, and William Stolze, President, RF Communications. RIT announced that its current $18.8M fundraising campaign had reached the half-way point, aided greatly with support from RG&E ($600k) and Rochester Telephone Corporation ($200k).

December 18, 1964 (Executive Committee Meeting, Chamber of Commerce) The Board approved a resolution

endorsing the newly-formed Monroe County Water Resources Council. Two new member applications were considered and approved by the Board. The Board approved a motion continuing the employment of Norman Howden as Executive Secretary, in 1965, at the same salary as 1964. Dr. Kirkpatrick of the RES Education Committee reported that a series of evening seminars was being planned for January, 1965. Due to relatively poor attendance at recent RES weekly luncheon meetings, it was decided to reduce the number of these gatherings to twice each month, beginning in 1965.

The RES Education Committee announced two series of evening seminars to help engineers update their academic training. The first series included Uses of Computers, Speed Reading, College Mathematics Review and Creative Thinking. The second series included Introduction of Computer Techniques, Management in Action, College Mathematics Review and Memory Training. The RES called a general membership meeting for Saturday morning, December 5th, in the RG&E, 89 East Avenue, Auditorium, to solicit ideas for increasing RES membership.

Subsequent articles in this series will describe the RES' continuing outreach to other technical societies as it considered its role in this and the larger community, along with more of the activities of the RES as it moved to be of greater service to its membership, especially those suffering from current economic crises, and adopted a greater role in shaping the future of the City and its environs. Noted also, will be the contributions made by RES members in the struggle to meet the challenges coming out of World War II, as well as a hoped-for period of post-war growth and prosperity. These articles will also feature an impressive array of RES activities in support of post-war re-emergence of Rochester area industry.We welcome your questions and comments on this series.

Dr. Walter Cooper with returning RES Tutor Renee Keaton The RES Tutoring Team has begun its school year 2016-17 at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy. Eighteen RES Tutors have begun working with our learners at #10 School. At an orientation meeting on October 12th, many of them met with the school leaders to learn about plans for the Expeditionary Learning Program for our scholars this coming year, and discuss their preferences for “tutoring assignments” for the 2016-17 school year.

We are continuing to build our Tutoring Team, for the 2016-17 school year. Please consider requesting an RES Tutoring Team Application, now or…We are currently scheduling “Lunch & Learn” presentations in several Rochester area firms and professional groups, to inform and inspire prospective new tutors. RES News How do you arm a STEM Teacher with real-world application examples?

Put an Engineer in the classroom!

In the 1990’s, Eastman Kodak Company jumped the gun, starting a family of STEM initiatives, years before the Government coined the STEM acronym. The name of these programs was the 21st Century Learning Challenge (TCLC), and at our peek, we were 1500 engineers and technicians, visiting Rochester City School Classrooms, twice a week for two-hour visits, during the entire School Year. This effort continued for nearly ten years, and not only pre-dates our recent STEM excitement level, but delivered support on a scale we have yet to match.

Many of the volunteers in these programs were, and still are, members of the Rochester Engineering Society (RES). In the intervening twenty-five years, many have retired, or are about to retire. That makes them even more available as STEM Coaches, than they were as Kodak employees.

The RES is working to put technical people in K-12 Classrooms, throughout the Greater Rochester area, as STEM Coaches. Their presence will: • • •

Help the Teacher stay current with our ever-changing technology.

Provide real-World Application Examples, making whatever is being taught, real enough to be worth remembering.

Support the teachers with not only the delivery of STEM concepts, but perhaps more importantly, the design and delivery of STEM related hardware.

Last year we had six STEM Coach, doing Classroom Visitation at School #3. That was so successful that RCSD is interested in expanding this program to involve nine STEM Coaches this year.

The RES is specifically seeking Retired, Technical people, (Engineers, Technicians, Machinists, Entrepreneurs or anyone whose work would allow them to visit during School hours), as STEM Coaches. We currently have more than 30 Coaches, and are connecting them with 13 Rochester-area Schools.

Trump and Tech - Andrè Godfrey Ian Wilson, former president of General Electric once remarked, “No amount of sophistication is going to allay the fact that all your knowledge is about the past and all your decisions are about the future.”

Great quote isn’t it?

We have a new president. Donald A. Trump. So what does the election of Trump mean to the technology industry and future innovation? Keeping Ian Wilson in mind, we have to examine the past to get answers. But what an imperfect mechanism that is to making future decisions or predictions. Any results derived by looking at the past for future results are likely to be filled with conjecture and opinion. Luckily I am not above participating in either, so here goes.

My first observations is age (Trump is 70) – talk about bias! But since I’m an old guy myself I will take the liberty to say that as a general rule older people aren’t as tech savvy as younger people. Simply less quality time with apps and mobile and digital play time, and more time in the world of typewriters, paper maps and telephones connected to the wall. That being said, like a lot of celebrities, Trump has discovered and embraced Twitter.

Sweet Billy Gates! That is pretty modern Millie kind of stuff but the immediacy and truncation of message within Twitter both communicates and miscommunicates, and I hope his use becomes a little more uh, ‘presidential’.

The second observation goes to jobs and tech. He hasn’t really said much on the subject and certainly the titans of the tech industry dissed Trump almost as badly as the nation’s newspapers. However, with technology jobs representing about 12% of all U.S. jobs today and jobs being a prime directive of the Trump candidacy, it would make more sense for Trump to look to the tech industry as core to any job growth plan he might undertake.

The third observation deals with immigration and what Trump may need to re-consider. Before he throws the baby out with bath let’s look at some incredible (but true!) stats relating to current day technology. The Kauffman 10 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER DECEMBER 2016

Foundation reports that twenty-four percent of tech and engineering companies created between 2006 and 2012 had an immigrant founder. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year on a study from the National Foundation for American Policy, a non-partisan think tank based in Arlington, Va., that shows that immigrants started more than half of those U.S.-based startups currently valued at $1 billion or more. Ever hear of Uber?

By the way, it should be pointed out this is nothing new, that America has a long history of immigrant inventors and industry captains. Andrew Carnegie (he invented Pittsburgh), Alexander Graham Bell, Dag Kittlaus to name three. Dag Kittlaus? Open your iPhone then and ask Siri. Siri is the invention of a Norwegian immigrant, Dag Kittlaus, who in 2010, created a personal assistant for mobile devices called Siri. Apple bought it for $200 million. Even yours truly was invented by an immigrant (my mom is from Palermo, Sicily).

The fourth observation deals with patents and protection.

I suspect patent protection is important to the new president. IP Watchdog, an industry blog for Intellectual Property observed that; ‘Trump, like it or not, has monetized his own name, spanning the varied businesses of real property, entertainment, sports, and consumer products. Much of Trump’s wealth is tied up in the value of the various Trump trademarks and his own likeness that he has licensed and understands how to commercialize.’

Get to the Point!

The Three Cs: Clear, Concise, and Complete For those who read my article regularly know that I am an advocate for strong yet effective communication particularly in our work lives. One of the difficulties is identifying the qualities of good communication. In my courses, I sum it up with three words: Clear, Concise, and Complete.

Everything you communicate (in writing and speaking) needs to have all three of these characteristics. The trick is to keep it short (concise) yet include all of the details (complete).

Be Clear: Use language that is appropriate for you audience. You must understand who you are communicating with and the level of jargon or industry-specific words you can use.

Remember that the higher up the chain, the less familiar they are with the technical language.

Use the Active Voice. Avoid the passive voice (What was Done by Whom?) because it creates a circular structure which is hard to follow. The active voice (Who Did What?) creates a confident tone and image and assigns responsibility. It also will shorten your sentences.

Don’t be tempted to use dull clichés like “the bottom line” or “the stage is set.” If your audience is working in a second language or has come from a culture or region where the expression is not used, communication is hindered.

Use simple words. Every field has jargon and acronyms that are special to that particular industry. Surround those words with shorter words so the audience can focus on the technical words. For example, why say consequently when so works just as well.

Be Complete: Consider the questions your audience will have about the topic and make sure you answer them, and only them. Your goal is to provide all the relevant details so the audience can understand, act, decide, or react to the situation. The key is to differentiate between the “Need to Know” and the “Nice to Know” information. Provide only the first.

In addition to the three Cs above, I sometimes include four more: Correct, Courtesy, Considerate, and Concrete.

In a nutshell, These mean check your grammar, be tactful and sincere, provide the benefits to the audience, and be specific.

Avoid wishy-washy words. Remove the “I think” and “I believe” statements along with the “woulds,” “coulds” and “shoulds.” These words show doubt and uncertainty, which is usually not the image you want to present to managers or clients. Vague words, for example adequate RGI Learning offers workshops in conflict resolution and or presently, also inject ambiguity. Work on identifying the communications skills. right word for the right place. For example use ideal rather than good; dissatisfied rather than unhappy.

Be Concise: Enough said. Remove the “fluff” or extra filler words that get to the point

The Limited Monopoly® 21st Century Holiday Lights - The Story of the White LED

As days grow short and darkness dominates the landscape, we humans turn to artificial lighting for both utility and aesthetic comfort. Before the advent of electricity, candles and lanterns were the light source of the day, and many a Christmas tree was adorned with candles and lanterns, much to the discomfort of the local fire department. With the birth of electric power, incandescent bulbs quickly became commonplace thanks to the efforts of Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan. Incandescent light bulbs were strung together to illuminate Christmas trees, and were often painted to create colored lights. Electric Christmas lights of the time were rather large, consumed lots of electricity, and produced plenty of heat, owing to their inefficiencies in converting electrons to photons.

Like everything (except perhaps smart phones and soft drinks), the trend in Christmas lights was miniaturization, making the bulbs smaller, resulting in less energy use and a nicer visual effect. While the marketing people were busy making prettier strings of lights, the engineers were busy doing what they do best building a better light bulb.

Enter the Light Emitting Diode (LED)

The details of the first light emitting diode were first published in a Russian journal in 1927 by Oleg Losev, who conducted extensive research into semiconductors and the mechanism of light emission from them. His discovery, however, was not put to use for many years.

Then in the late 50’s and early 60’s, researchers at the Radio Corporation of America, Texas Instruments, General Electric, IBM, Bell Labs, and MIT became interested in this phenomenon. A patent for the first practical LED soon issued (U.S. Patent 3,293,513), followed by development of the first visible spectrum (red) LED by General Electric. From there, advancements (and patents) continued. LEDs became commonplace for indicator lamps and displays. Many of us EE types fondly remember the little jelly bean like LEDs and white breadboards, and the wonderful seven segment displays on our HP and TI calculators. Remember ShELL OIL (710.77345)?

The Elusive Blue

While red, green and yellow LEDs were commonplace in the 70’s and 80’s, blue was non-existent. The emission of light by a P-N junction with an applied electric field is caused by the release of energy when charge carriers recombine in a forward biased P-N junction. Most silicon and germanium based diodes dissipate energy in the form of heat, but alas, gallium phosphide and gallium arsenide phosphide diodes release this energy in the form of photons as well. Doping the LED with various impurities changes the wavelength of light released, but blue was not produced using any of the known semiconductor materials of the time, and was considered unobtainable with those materials.

…And on to White

Researchers at RCA discovered in the early 70’s that gallium Nitride (GaN) produced blue light, but early blue LEDs did not produce adequate light output to be commercially successful. Then in 1994 Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Corporation built a high brightness blue LED based on InGaN, an event that forever changed the lighting industry. Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano were working on material improvements to GaN to 12 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER DECEMBER 2016

substantially contribute to the success of the blue LEDs being developed

by Nakamura. The three won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014 for their invention of blue LEDs. Now with high brightness blue LEDs a reality, phosphor coatings could be used to convert some blue light to yellow light, and also to produce red and green light. Mixing these wavelengths of light together would result in light that appears white to the eye. With these breakthroughs, the stage was set for the advancement and proliferation of white LED lighting that we see today in everything from interior lights to automobiles to computer and smartphone screens - and especially this month, ultra bright Christmas lights!

And Some Patent Drama

Shuji Nakamura of Nichia Corporation was the primary inventor of the blue LED that resulted in the proliferation of modern day highly efficient white LED lighting. His employer Nichia Corporation was initially willing to fund his research into GaN, but eventually stopped funding after concerns that the project was taking too much time and money to complete. Nakamura continued the research on his own, and in 1993 succeeded in making a blue LED with excellent light output characteristics. Nakamura then moved to California to take a teaching position at UC Santa Barbara where he became involved with Cree Inc., a US manufacturer of white LEDs. In 2001, he sued his employer, Nichia Corporation, for $180 million US Dollars as part of a complex lawsuit with Cree, one of Nichia’s competitors. He sought fair compensation for his invention, whose patents made Nichia immense profits. When he left Nichia in the 90’s, the company reportedly gave Nakamura $200 as an award for his GaN LED invention. Nakamura asserted in Japanese court that he was the rightful patent holder and inventor, and should be justly compensated for his work. After several years in court, he agreed to settle for the equivalent of $8 million US Dollars.

The Nakamura lawsuit highlights the relationship between employer and employee when it comes to how ownership of intellectual property rights impacts innovation. While his lawsuit may have not fundamentally changed the way in which companies treat employee inventors in the same way as white LEDs have changed the lighting industry, the outcome has certainly drawn attention to the topic of fair and reasonable compensation for inventions made by employees.

Engineering faculty awarded $1.8 million NIH grant to develop ultrathin membranes for tissue engineering RIT team builds transparent glass membranes, advancing the development of in vitro tissue models Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology are advancing tissue engineering through new work in developing improved porous membranes that will be the “scaffolds,” or foundational structures, for in vitro tissue models.

“We are building membranes that will not only solve the needs of researchers studying the basic biology of barriers, but also scientists and engineers investigating drug discovery and stem cell differentiation,” said Thomas Gaborski, assistant professor of biomedical engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. “Half of this work is about the development of membrane technology, and the other half is about developing better in vitro barrier model systems.”

Gaborski was awarded a five-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop “Transparent ultrathin nano-membranes for barrier cell models and novel co-cultures systems.” This is a new investigator award given to early-career faculty-researchers who propose innovative approaches to high-impact projects. His work is in developing nano-membranes, including new, ultrathin, transparent glass membranes, and performing collaborative work with other researchers in the fields of physiological barrier models and stem cell differentiation.

One of the technologies he and his team are working on are “glass” membranes that are optically transparent allowing researchers the ability to visualize cellular processes in real-time and in high resolution.

Conventional membranes currently used in research labs to build engineered tissues are often thick and usually opaque, making it difficult to see details at the cellular level.

Gaborski’s new design will be an advance in the technique.

“Current membranes are limiting because they don’t allow easy physical and biochemical communication between cells that are on opposite sides of the membranes,” he explained. “Most barriers in your body are not made up of a single layer of cells but multiple layers, and this membrane must support the cells, while also preventing them from mixing with one another.

“We want to create stratified layers of tissue in the laboratory, but current membranes are thick and not as porous, so that limits cell-to-cell communication. We want something that provides a scaffold for growth, but does not hinder natural processes.”

In addition to developing new membranes, Gaborski’s research team will continue to focus on cell-substrate interactions and

vascular barrier models. In 2014, he was presented the Young Innovator Award in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering given by the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) for his work in developing porous membranes and co-culture systems using vascular endothelial and adiposederived stem cells. His team is developing ways to use ultra-thin nano-membranes to differentiate stem cells into the cells necessary to create vascular networks. These cells could ultimately be used to create blood vessels within engineered tissues and organs.

Gaborski and his team are also using transparent membranes to investigate fundamental cellular interactions. His team recently returned from the annual BMES conference where they presented results showing that membrane properties could be optimized to reduce cell-substrate interactions and instead promote cell-tocell interactions. In the future, membrane pore properties could be engineered to create more physiologically relevant culture substrates to enhance barrier formation in these micro-physiological systems. More realistic in vitro barrier models would benefit drug delivery research as well as a better understanding of tissue formation, he explained. q

RIT awarded grant to study a globally coordinated vaccine market Rubén Proaño to develop a comprehensive model for affordable vaccines for low income countries Rochester Institute of Technology received a three-year, $374,949 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for facultyresearcher Rubén Proaño to study and help design a coordinated decision-support system for the global procurement of vaccines.

Vaccines are considered one of the most cost-effective interventions to raise health standards of children across the globe, said Proaño, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. He has proposed an optimization-based approach to model a coordinated vaccine procurement system in an effort to understand how the neediest populations receive necessary and affordable vaccines, but also 14 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER DECEMBER 2016

taking into account how producers and distributers of those vaccines can still profit to ensure sustainability.

“We are able to simulate a vaccine market that is coordinated, which isn’t right now, and we seek to understand how we can generate a market that is feasible, and sustainable, in a way that buyers and sellers can find common incentives to procure and sell affordable vaccines. We aim that our findings will help key global stakeholders in the vaccine market to induce benefits that will translate in improving vaccine coverage in low income countries,” said Proaño, who will manage this project and has expertise in operations research and is interested in designing optimization campus news

models for improving healthcare delivery systems. “We’ll be using some of the best public, private, market information there is to validate the models we already develop and the new ones we propose; and that is incredibly exciting. The main outputs of our work should be insights for decision-makers to ensure a healthy vaccine market for the future.”

Proaño’s research is expected to answer questions about understanding the impact of changing the way current markets are configured for pricing vaccines, how to sequence vaccine procurement, the impact of cooperative and non-cooperative vaccine procurement agents, and the optimal means to bundle procurement.

According to the World Health Organization’s Expanded Programme on Immunization, vaccine distribution has fluctuated since 2000, with an estimated 30 million children, living in poor countries, lacking immunizations. To help meet this need, the Gates Foundation invests in vaccine research, development and delivery.

The foundation works closely with key global stakeholders such as GAVI, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations, and UNICEF toward improving global health.

“We are very grateful to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for its support,” said Proaño. “Our project will also provide a unique learning opportunity for the graduate and undergraduate students participating of this initiative. They will have the chance to make an impact. They will be able to apply their STEM skills to address some difficult global questions, interact with key stakeholders, and develop recommendations that can potentially lead to strategies that could improve people’s lives.” q

Researcher awarded grant for transfer student initiative toward increasing STEM degree graduates Scholarship and support program would be directed toward low income students from two-year colleges Rochester Institute of Technology received a fiveyear grant of nearly $1 million from the National Science Foundation to provide scholarship support to transfer students in undergraduate engineering and engineering technology degree programs.

The award, part of NSF’s Scholarships in Science, Technology and Mathematics Program, will support 78 high-achieving, low-income transfer students from twoyear colleges. The project will focus on alleviating challenges often encountered by vertical transfer students—defined as those transferring from two-year college programs into four-year bachelor’s degree programs— by adding extended orientation for the scholars and by customizing individual interventions and support including mentoring and academic advising.

“This is an extremely attractive pool of students to draw upon because these students are interested in STEM fields, have shown that they can handle the demanding work in these disciplines and they are campus news

ready to do more,” said Vinnie Gupta, professor of mechanical engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, who will administer the scholarship program.

Nationally, the emphasis has been on encouraging students in K-12 programs to consider STEM degrees. Gupta sees students from two-year colleges as ideal candidates to recruit from to further enhance STEM participation, adding, “Students graduating from two-year colleges have already demonstrated that they are academically motivated and persistent.”

Scholarship awards of $2,500 per semester for the first four semesters of full-time enrollment, for a total of $10,000, will be available to each transfer student. To be eligible for the program, a student will need to be accepted into a bachelor’s degree program, transfer at least 50 credit hours (or the equivalent) and demonstrate financial need by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Departments participating in this project are mechanical engineering, electrical and microelectronic engineering, computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering from the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, and all four engineering technology departments in the College of Applied Science and Technology. Department chairs and advisers within each of these degree programs will oversee academic support and mentoring for the transfer students.

“We want to make sure they start their RIT life in a positive way,” said Gupta. “During each academic term, we’ll not only be monitoring their academic performance but also helping them get their financial, academic, social and personal life in balance to succeed here at RIT.” Since 2008, Gupta has led similar transfer student support and scholarship programs that have been successful in recruiting, retaining and graduating students in STEM

programs. Part of the terms for the new award are to formalize the research and assessment of factors for successful degree completion by transfer scholars.

By utilizing affordable GIS tools, municipal staff can more efficiently maintain critical information about a community’s infrastructure. Tax, utility and fire hydrant/water maps, for example, can be updated on mobile devices with real-time access to information that supports enhanced decision-making or reduces operational expenditures. The goal is to strengthen local governments with operational efficiencies that minimize costs.

RIT professor collaborates on new astronomical camera, teaches at University of Tokyo Michael Richmond contributes to the Tomo-e Gozen project

Rochester Institute of Technology professor Michael Richmond is a visiting professor for the fall term at the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for the Early Universe.

in the sky if you look repeatedly with short exposure times,” said Richmond, a professor in RIT’s School of Physics and Astronomy.

He is teaching a graduate course called “A field guide to exoplanets” and collaborating with colleagues at the university.

Richmond will analyze data from the new camera at RIT. He will return to Japan in the spring as a visiting professor at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, where he will teach a class and work again with the Tome-e camera team.

Richmond works with scientists at the center who are building a new type of astronomical camera for the 105-centimeter Kiso Schmidt Telescope at the Kiso Observatory in the mountains of central Japan. The Tomo-e Gozen project uses a large array of wide-field CMOS detectors, a type of solid-state detector recently applied to astronomy to capture images faster than CCDs, or charge-coupled detectors. CCDs are the standard technology used in astronomical imaging and in some consumer electronics.

Campus News RIT Launches Video Game Design XSeries Program With edX Top-ranked game design university offers flexible online studies exploring video game design industry Top-ranked game design university offers flexible online studies exploring video game design industry

of running game code to how different industry roles collaborate to produce, market and ship a video game.

Instructors from Rochester Institute of Technology, a top-ranked school for video game design and development, are helping online learners determine how to turn their love of video games into a career.

The first offering will explore the history of the video game design industry, with insights from the International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG) at The Strong National Museum of Play, the largest and most comprehensive public assemblage of video games and related materials in the world.

RIT is launching a Video Game Design XSeries program with edX, the leading nonprofit online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT. XSeries programs are designed to provide learners with a rich understanding of an area of study through a series of offerings grouped under one subject. XSeries programs also include an opportunity to earn an XSeries verified certificate to demonstrate competency and knowledge in a specific field.

Enrollment for the five offerings in the Video Game Design XSeries program is now open. The first offering began Oct. 31.

The series will teach learners about the skills they would need to become a successful video game designer and explore what job opportunities they could pursue in the industry. Offerings are taught by faculty in RIT’s School of Interactive Games and Media.

“You’ll learn how game history influences design, how designers and programmers think, the various roles within the video game design discipline and how all the pieces come together,” said Stephen Jacobs, professor of interactive games and media at RIT and an instructor in the XSeries. “We want to help people develop a deeper understanding of the field, the discipline and explore the related career paths as well.”

The XSeries consists of five, five-week offerings: • Video Game Design History (started Oct. 31) • Video Game Design and Balance (starts Jan. 2, 2017) • Video Game Asset Creation and Process (starts March 6, 2017) • Video Game Design: Teamwork & Collaboration (starts July 24, 2017) • Gameplay Programming for Video Game Designers (starts Sept. 11, 2017) Within each offering, learners will have access to several videos from the instructors each week, readings, discussion boards with other participants and multiple-choice quizzes. Each weekly unit takes about three hours to complete.

“Just as writers learn their craft by reading and studying great works of the past, video game designers need to know how game design has developed and evolved over the years,” said Jon-Paul C. Dyson, director of ICHEG and vice president for exhibits at The Strong, who is coinstructor for the Video Game Design History offering. “Participants will have a unique learning opportunity in this course to see prototypes, designer notes, rare games and other iconic artifacts from The Strong’s unparalleled collection that showcase the history of game design.”

RIT’s game design and development graduate and undergraduate programs have been ranked among the Princeton Review’s list of top schools for video game design for more than five years. Graduates of RIT’s game design and development programs have gone on to work at some of the industry’s top employers, including Amazon Games, Apple, Bungie Studios, Blizzard Entertainment, EA Games, Epic Games, Google, Konami Gaming Inc., Microsoft, Rockstar Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Valve Corporation and Walt Disney Interactive.

RIT’s game design and development program is housed within the School of Interactive Games and Media, in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. The RIT XSeries is made possible with help from RIT’s Innovative Learning Institute.

T.Y. Lin International Designs Improvements to Niagara Falls State Park in New York T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that construction is nearing completion for significant improvements to Niagara Falls State Park in Niagara Falls, New York. TYLI was retained by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) for a multi-year term agreement to develop the comprehensive capital rehabilitation and improvement plan for the park.

The 400-acre Niagara Falls State Park is considered the United States’ oldest state park and visited by more than eight million people each year. In addition to providing spectacular views of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Canada’s Horseshoe Falls, the park also offers hiking and nature trails, access to several small islands, various recreational programs, and dining and entertainment facilities.

“Working closely with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, T.Y. Lin International and our project partner, The LA Group, delivered a design plan that recognized and emphasized the site’s historic and natural setting while providing maximum functionality consistent with the park’s operational requirements,” said Robert Radley, P.E., TYLI Senior Vice President and East Region Director.

Overseeing a team of five firms, TYLI utilized NYSOPRHP’s Niagara Falls State Park Landscape Improvement Plan as a design basis. The design called for services such as site civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, architecture, environmental engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering, and surveying. Landscape architecture, which plays a major role in enhancing the park visitor experience, was provided by The LA Group, based in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Improvements to Niagara Falls State Park include: the development of new facilities, updates to existing infrastructure, and expanded parking at the park’s point of arrival, Cave of the Winds Plaza; upgrades and enhancements to numerous trails and overlooks, including providing full Americans with Disabilities (ADA) access and lighting; and rehabilitation of the Luna Island pedestrian bridge. TYLI also designed a new sanitary sewer and pump station system to serve Goat Island and prepared a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan for Three Sisters Islands.

The final phase of the five-year construction effort is scheduled for completion in June 2017. q

Architectural detailing was drawn from the owner’s love of medieval Scandinavian architecture, and appreciation for the traditional Japanese Mountain Homes from the Muromachi period, where design resistant to earthquake and sheltered against heavy rainfall and summer heat was employed. The architectural design is characterized by its horizontal lines, battered walls, low-pitched roofs, enormous overhanging eaves, and open plan, allowing the occupants to live in what is essentially an inside-out shelter. q

The goal for this event is to model a real life penetration test as closely as possible in a competition environment. Cyber security events, such as a CTF, vulnerability assessment, auditing, or Pen testing, share many characteristics. All of them exercise a competitor’s understanding of how things work, knowledge of why systems function the way they do, and their skill in manipulating a systems function. PE/IAS TOUR OF THE NEW UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER SUBSTATION AND THE COGEN PLANT ON OCTOBER 27 WAS A SUCCESS The Power and Energy/Industry Applications Society took a tour of the new University of Rochester Substation on Kendrick Road, and the Cogen Plant on Elmwood Avenue.

The first ever workshop related to unmanned aerial systems (UAS) was held at RIT on October 28th, 2016. The 2016 STRATUS or Systems and Technologies for Remote Sensing Applications Through Unmanned Aerial Systems, was held, all day, in Louise Slaughter Hall on the RIT campus.

The aim of the workshop was to facilitate interaction between academic researchers, industry researchers and students working in the field of remote sensing utilizing unmanned aerial systems. Since this is an emerging field, the goal of the workshop was not to define technical requirements, standards or legal policy, but rather to illustrate the specific connection between remote sensing and unmanned aerial platforms at both the commercial and academic levels.

There were 82 people registered for the workshop from both industry and academia. Companies such as SkyOp, microdrones, Harris, Eagle Hawk, EnableUAV, Oak Ridge National Labs and even the Monroe County Water Authority were represented. Individuals from universities such as University of Guelph (Canada), Beijing Institute of Technology (China), Hobart and William Smith, Cornell, St. John Fisher, U of R, RIT and MCC were also in attendance.

There were 11 oral and 6 poster presentations along with two keynote speakers, one from industry (i.e., Headwall Photonics in Boston) and one from academia (i.e., RIT). Student awards ($200 each) were given out for best paper (Ahmed Elshamli), poster (Dylan Cornell), and oral presentation (Ryan Ford). These awards were made possible by the generous financial contributions of EagleView-Pictometry.

The workshop was made possible, in part, by a $3,400 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) award won by RIT Research Professor, and general workshop chair, Emmett Ientilucci.

The award allowed for low registration fees for non-students while waiving registration fees for students. The workshop also received the technical co-sponsorship of the IEEE GRSS Society which enabled hosting the event on the IEEE GRSS website, advertisement in the GRSS Magazine, and the ability to publish accepted full papers in IEEE Xplore. It is our intention that this be the start of an annual workshop on unmanned aerial systems here at RIT.

Our meeting in November was on “Air Filtration” presented by Jeff Thidbodeau and Steve Mongeau from American Air Filter International. That you to everyone that attended.

ASHRAE Rochester has started a new group, Women in ASHRAE within our chapter this year. This group is being led by Jaimee Wilson, PhD, PE, LEED AP. Their goal is to provide guidance, networking, and professional development for female engineers. If you are or have a female coworker in HVAC engineering I would highly recommend getting them in touch with Jamiee. Quick fact: ASHRAE Society as a whole is made up of 6% female members. In Rochester our membership is made up of 9% female members currently and I truly expect this number to grow due to the leadership of Jamiee with the Women in ASHRAE group.

In December the Young Engineers of ASHRAE (YEA) will be hosting a technical session prior to our regularly scheduled chapter meeting. The topic will be Fundamentals of Refrigeration presented

by Sam Scorsone, PE. The chapter meeting topic will be “Impact of new EPA and DOE Regulations on Refrigeration and Cooling” presented by Mike Nohle. We hope to see you at our December Meeting.

NYSSPE Supports Licensure of Geologists & Protects Engineering License On November 21, 2014 the Governor signed Chapter 475 which provides for the licensure of professional geologists under Title VIII of the Education Law. The law, however, did not take effect until November 21st of this year. Additional amendments and clarifications were made via Chapter 260 of the Laws of 2016. The previous State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying is now known as the State Board for Engineering, Land Surveying and Geology.1 While NYSSPE fully supports the licensure of our allies in the profession of geology, we are also keenly interested in ensuring that the new licensure of geologists does not infringe on areas that are specifically reserved for the disciplines of engineering. In an August 9th YouTube broadcast, NYSSPE Executive Director, Anthony Fasano, and NYSSPE Legal Counsel, Mark Kriss, discussed some of the specific areas in which the organization supported and assisted in the development of this new professional license.2 Mr. Fasano and Mr. Kriss noted that NYSSPE was able to provide some assistance to the proponents for licensing geologists in regard to the process of developing a licensed profession. At the same time, they paid keen attention to how the law was being drafted in order to ensure that specific engineering disciplines, such as geotechnical and geothermal engineers, were protected. In addition to protecting the engineering profession, this also serves to protect public welfare.

Where geologists are often concerned with researching, mapping, and studying the earth’s strata, they are prohibited from providing services that involve design, remediation, or application of technology. In this way, a mutually beneficial law was drafted that protected the interests of geologists, engineers, and the general public.

This is just one example of how NYSSPE works to protect the interests of not just its members, but all licensed professional engineers. The staff and members of NYSSPE remain vigilant in keeping up to date on new developments that affect the profession.

If you answered no to the third question, come and learn about NASA’s new great observatory, WFIRST. The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope will follow in the footsteps of NASA’s other great observatories and is planned for a mid-2020 launch. WFIRST will expand the field of view of Hubble by 100 times and is the top ranked large space mission in the New Worlds, New Horizon Decadal Survey in Astronomy and Astrophysics for 2010. WFIRST is both a dark energy and planet finder mission. It will help settle fundamental questions about the history of the universe. Join us to learn more about the science and enabling engineering technologies being applied to this compelling mission.

Biography: Bonnie Patterson is the Harris program manager for the WFIRST mission. She holds a BS and MS in mechanical engineering. Bonnie joined Harris in 2014, having worked for Kodak primarily in digital printing for 18 years prior. During her tenure at Kodak she held positions in non-linear structural analysis and system testing as well as both functional and project leadership. She holds five US patents and was recently certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP).

President's Message The Chapter received a Member Retention Award at the 2016 Convention. On behalf of the Chapter Board, thank-you to all our members for your continued support of the Chapter, and towards ASPE. Please note that the meeting for December is one week earlier than our normal meeting, which is typically the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

A key part of the business meeting during the 2016 Convention was the review of 15 proposed amendments to the ASPE Bylaws. Of the 15 proposed amendments, 5 passed, 7 were rejected and 3 were redrawn. Proposed amendments that passed included changes to requirements for Retired Member and Life Member categories.

Requirements for Satellites of Chapters, and for Petition for Charter (for new Chapters) were also modified by amendments that passed.
