Rochester History Continuing with the historical sampling of the earlier writings on behalf of the Rochester Engineering Society, the years following "The Great War," into and through the “Great Depression," continued to be a time of reaching out for the maturing Society, both locally and nationally. The meeting minutes describe a series of technical discussions and presentations intended to broaden the technical horizons of the membership (especially the CE's, ME's and EE's). The RES affiliated itself with a number of National technical societies, adopted local Affiliated Societies, frequently held joint meetings with them and continued taking action on a growing list of public matters.

Certain issues of standardization, some crucial to public safety, became the responsibility of the RES and its affiliates. In the pervasive economic downturn of the “Great Depression,” the magazine offered classified advertising for unemployed engineers, technicians and draftsmen and took other steps to try to deal with the crisis. Still, it continued its effort to shape the function, purpose and infrastructure of the City of Rochester, and beyond. Soon, war would again affect the Society, taking away many of its leaders while providing opportunities for others to step forward to fill these vacancies. In an effort to provide even greater perspective on the happenings and concerns of the day, a synopsis, featuring selected items from "The Rochester Engineer" has become an integral part of this series. The Second World War and the Korean Conflict are now history. These experiences have changed the face and, no doubt, the future of the community. The Rochester municipal leadership and the industrial community have become immersed in the cold-war, growth economy.

“The Rochester Engineer” (March 1964) “In instituting the “Rochester Engineer of the Year” Award, the Rochester Engineering Society has selected Carey H. Brown to be its first recipient.” This message announced the beginning of a tradition of the Society that has spanned the past sixty-two years and grown into an annual multi-award presentation, one that recognizes young engineers, life-time engineering careers and singular engineering accomplishments in our community. Col. Carey H. Brown, a 1910 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, WWI veteran, Scottsville School Board President, RES President, City of Rochester Planning Board Chair, retired Eastman Kodak Manager of Engineering & Manufacturing Services, Director and Fellow of ASCE and ASME, Otetiana Council (BSA) President (when they acquired Camp Massaweepie) and a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honorary Society, has served as a shining example of the caliber of engineering professionals typically designated for this annual award. Five RES luncheon programs were announced in this issue; “Commercial Development” by Cloyd L. Betzer of The Pfaudler Company, “The Identification of the Engineer” by Dr. Larry Lipsett of RIT, “Doing Business Overseas”

by George C. Calvert of Pfaudler Permutit, Inc., “Looking Ahead with RG&E” by Linn B. Bowman of RG&E Corporation, and “A Glimpse at Rochester Tel’s Future” by William A. Kern of Rochester Telephone Corporation. Seminars and panel discussions on “Work Measurement” and “Design and Manufacture of Dies” were announced. Recently issued by the Engineers’ Council for Professional Development, the magazine published “Canons of Ethics of Engineers” covering such topics as “Relations with the Public”, “Relations with Employers & Clients” and “Relations with Engineers.” It solicited comments for publication in future issues of The Rochester Engineer. This issue announced that George S. Beinetti of Rochester Telephone Corporation had applied for membership to the RES.

A Sampling from the Archives of the Rochester Engineering Society...1897 - 1964

April 20, 1964 (Executive Committee Meeting, Chamber of Commerce) The Executive Committee approved a motion granting a waiver of dues and a life membership to Oliver O. Angevine, retired RES Executive Secretary. The Finance Committee was instructed to review details of the Kate Gleason Fund toward recommending any changes to the investment portfolio. A preliminary draft of a revised RES Constitution was distributed to the Executive Committee, with a recommendation to forward copies to all Board members. Treasurer’s Report: Balance (3/01/64) $1,740.97, Receipts (March 1964) $2,275.20, Disbursements (March 1964) $2,011.38, Balance (4/01/64) $263.82.

“The Rochester Engineer” (April 1964) General Dynamics/Electronics announced that it would be hosting a tour for RES members of its research barge, Darius, currently near Dresden, NY, on Seneca Lake. Currently moored over the deepest part of the lake, this barge is the site of GD/E’s research in underwater hydro-acoustics, the science associated with detection, location and identification of submarines. This issue presented a report by the RES Policy Committee describing the “Purpose of the RES,” an “Ultimate RES” and the “Interim RES." The product of long hours of deliberation, this document was aimed at helping the RES to develop into a strong and effective organization serving its members, other engineering groups and the entire engineering community. The RES Executive Committee urgently solicited the views of its membership, toward re-focusing efforts to better serve Rochester and its engineers. While some of the recommended changes were already underway, others would require fundamental changes to the RES Constitution and By-Laws. At the April 1964 meeting of the Rochester Chapter of the ASCE, RIT presented plans for development of its 1300 acre campus in the town of Henrietta, just South of Rochester. RIT also announced the appointment of Dr. Edward T. Kirkpatrick, a native of British Columbia and former Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Toledo, as Associate Dean of the College of Applied Science. Dr. Kirkpatrick had also recently applied for membership to the RES. May 19, 1964 (Executive Committee Meeting, Chamber of Commerce) Dr. John Graham, as Chair of the RES Constitution and By-Laws Committee, presented revised Constitution and ByLaws for the RES, for consideration by the Executive Committee. It was moved and approved that these be published in the June 1964 issue of The Rochester Engineer and that they be voted upon by the RES membership, at the June 18, 1964, annual meeting.

Subsequent articles in this series will describe the RES' continuing outreach to other technical societies as it considered its role in this and the larger community, along with more of the activities of the RES as it moved to be of greater service to its membership, especially those suffering from the current economic crisis, and adopted a greater role in shaping the future of the City and its environs. Noted also, will be the contributions made by RES members in the struggle to meet the challenges coming out of World War II, as well as a hoped-for period of post-war growth and prosperity. These articles will also feature an impressive array of RES activities in support of post-war re-emergence of Rochester area industry.

At the RES 2016 GALA, on April 16th, you may have met members of RES Tutoring Team at Dr. Walter Cooper Academy, hosted by Bergmann Associates. The RES Tutoring Team currently includes full-time, employed Professional Engineers, recently-graduated engineers, retired engineers, retired school teachers, U of R and RIT undergraduate and graduate students, local business leaders and employees using their “flextime” to spend a few hours a week as tutors.

We are planning an RES Tutoring Team Orientation Meeting. This will be held in the Dr. Walter Cooper Academy’s School #10 Library, in late September/early October. It will be a chance for our tutors, new and old, to meet with the school leaders, learn about plans for the Expeditionary Learning Program for our scholars this coming year, and receive their “tutoring assignments” for the school year.

Administrative Director, Lynne Irwin, interviews RES President and Volunteer Coordinator Jon Kriegel, and Eileen, a 4th Grade Teacher and Donna, a 5th Grade Teacher; on the RES STEM Initiative to put technical people in classrooms as STEM support for teachers.

Ms. Irwin: Donna, I understand Jon was one of three volunteers who visited your class twice a week for 2 hours each visit. Given that this went on for six years, can you give me a specific example of how these visits helped you and/or your students?

Donna: I used to teach Simple Machines/Pulleys with chalk on the blackboard. We spent several classes talking about the relationship between the number of pulleys and the resulting mechanical-advantage. The STEM volunteers brought in a block and tackle with 3 pulleys at one end and two at the other. We set up a mock tug-of-war in the school parking lot, and the smallest girl in class could wind-in the strongest four boys. If a picture is worth a thousand words, just imagine what this hardware-demonstration was worth. The kids not only got a better feel for the physics principals, they also saw and used, the real-world hardware.

Ms. Irwin: Eileen?

Eileen: I was working on Buoyancy and Density.

The units for Density are lbs/in3. Jon was worried that the kids had no image in their head of what those units meant, so to make at least the volume part of this concept more tangible, he had 150 paper stretch-outs of a cubic inch made. Each student got the flat-pattern and a glue stick, and made their own cubic inch.

One of the Coaches had a foam die that was 3 inches on each side. We calculated that there should be 33 = 27 of our paper cubic inches in the big foam one, but nobody believed it. So he borrowed the class’s paper cubes and started building the larger one. When he set the 10th block in place we all gasped; it was clear that it was really going to take 27 to match the foam die.

Ms. Irwin: How many Volunteer STEM Coaches are involved in this Initiative?

Jon: We have 44 Volunteers at this time. Coaches have been working the 2015/16 school year at School #3 (RCSD STEM Magnet), Honeoye Falls Primary School and at Edison Tech. A dozen school districts have asked for Volunteers for next year.

Ms. Irwin: What training does a Volunteer need to participate?

Jon: Our experience is that Pre-K through Six, your technical background and career-related experience make you a valuable resource for any teacher working on STEM topics. Help comes in the form of either bringing or building hardware to help make tangible and real, the topics the teacher wants to work on, and perhaps more importantly, we bring the real world application examples that justify teaching this material in the first place.

At higher grades and for high school classes, we try to stay on specific areas-of-expertise that agree with the volunteer’s career history. If an AP Biology teacher wants help, we will connect her with someone strong in that area.

This practice means that no new training is required. Instead, the goal is to match the Coaches’ existing skill-set with the teacher’s objectives.

Just as an aside, the coaches found themselves competing to be the first to “design” (or find), that “cheap and dirty” hardware that would best demonstrate whatever technical concept the teacher was pursuing.

(The Cubic Inch was a win on my imaginary score sheet.) Think about bringing a volt meter to a 5th Grade class and measuring the potential you can get from a potato.

Ms. Irwin: I understand that this initiative is related to efforts Eastman Kodak and other Rochester employers made in the 1980s and ‘90s.

Jon: Yes, in fact the Xerox (sister) Initiative, started in 1987, is actually still running. I can speak best about the “Kodak 21st Century Learning Challenge” which put 1500 of us (engineers and technicians) into more than 700 RCSD classrooms from 1987-1996. This program started six years before the Federal Government coined the STEM acronym!

The Kodak initiative consisted of three prongs; Classroom Visitation, 1-on-1 Mentoring, and a Worker/Teacher Job Exchange. One hundred and fifty teachers came to Kodak every day for five weeks during the summer, and took over the job of his or her Kodak counterpart.

“Today Ms. Johnson (a teacher from School #4), will be running the jobs queued up for the electron-beam microscope at the EK Research Labs in Building 83.” The premise was that such hands-on, real-world experience can only help to enable teachers regarding the realities of STEM delivery.

Better yet, there was almost no attrition; everyone who joined, found it to be so rewarding, no one left. Four of our new RES Recruits are actually Veterans from the Kodak initiative. One actually left Kodak to pursue education as a full-time career. We also found an RCSD Teacher who was, as a 4th grader, tutored by Kodak volunteers. How is that for Career-path influence?

Ms. Irwin: How many hours per week are your Volunteers committing?

Jon: We have been making two visits per week, but it turns out, even a Coach who can only visit once a month, can make a difference. That just means you need a lot of them, to keep up with the need. Each teacher might see three different Volunteers in a given week. It is also possible to have more than one Coach in any given class.

Ms. Irwin: Were you also part of the Kodak Mentoring Program?

Jon: Yes, I mentored a 5th grader named Louis, who wanted to be a Paleontologist. I gave him a 13 inch wooden Pteronodon model for his birthday. The kit included one sheet with the outline of all the parts, and suggested that an adult grew to have a 21 foot wing span. You don’t dare give an engineer the plans unless you are willing to have him help his student build this Pterosauria (technically not a dinosaur), lifesize.

Ms. Irwin: Since you are the president of the Rochester Engineering Society, should we conclude that you are seeking only “Engineers” as Volunteer STEM Coaches?

Jon: No, we want anybody with a technical background that is available during school hours. Retirees may be our largest demographic, but if you are self-employed, or you work for a company which sees STEM support as helping to fill their employee pipe-line, we’ve got work for you. We also get a lot of college students who are satisfying community-service needs. Candidates with any technical background are eligible, not just engineers. Classroom visitation is my focus, but we have also been helping to staff Project Lead the Way, First Robotics, and organizations like BSA Explorer Troops, (the RES runs Troop #801), and other STEM groups which meet after school and weekends.

Ms. Irwin: Eileen, was there any fear that this visitor was competing with you as a second teacher?

Eileen: Absolutely not. I worked with the same three coaches for six years. By the end of the second week, is was clear that this partnership was providing three extremely valuable plusses: 1. The coaches could take the class (and me) to technical depths where I could not have gone. (Which is, by the way, also empowering me for future classes.)

2. No matter how good a teacher I am, how was I also going to accumulate all the actual application examples these “techies” brought to my class?

3. The students got exposure to “engineers” and to technical CareerPath opportunities. (Somehow this career exposure used to be limited to Firemen and Policemen.)

The United Kingdom – which may not be so united come this printing – has voted itself out of the European Union (EU).

Because it’s all about us – how is separation going to affect technology and engineering?

The real answer is ‘I don’t know’ but I think you may find that answer as unsatisfactory as I do writing it, so let’s conjecture and postulate and see if we can’t bring some thought to what the future might bring.

First, let’s talk to major changes that might happen soon.

Consider that the United Kingdom may not be so united in the Brexit movement. Certainly Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales may consider taking separate actions regarding remaining in the EU even at the cost of removing themselves from the United Kingdom umbrella. The voting in those countries did not mirror the end result and in fact Scotland voted 62% to remain in the EU. But the principal change that is already occurring is that the major U.S. banks and other large financial institutions will likely either leave or shift much of their operations elsewhere. Why? Because the EU was the biggest reason they were in England in the first place. The EU had anointed London its financial hub as part of the agreement to entice England to join the EU and the U.S. banks, as well as 250 other foreign banks, understood that if they set up shop in London, by default they had access to the EU as well. That’s tens of thousands of jobs going somewhere not named England.

From an engineering perspective the outlook is not promising.

Engineering thrives on new investment and the EU drove much of the investment in England. In total, the British private sector received £1.4 billion in funding from the EU in 2013. I cannot imagine that the EU will reward England with additional investment and I would be concerned as to whether the EU will look for opportunities to discontinue their current efforts.

The EU aside, private investment funds will likely look for other geographies to invest in. Better Capital, the Luxembourg-based European Investment Fund, is the largest investor in UK venture 8 | The ROCHESTER ENGINEER AUGUST 2016

capital firms and warned the European fund "would probably stop investing in the UK" if England left the EU. Brexit also brings unfortunate changes to the United Kingdom’s tech industry. The start-up tech community has thrived in England in large part due to the EU partnership. Now, the future is at best uncertain and possibly disastrous.

EU trade tariffs that England was previously immune to are now part of the new cost of doing business. At the same time the pound is weakening, exacerbating competitive issues. Foreign nationals which comprise a significant portion of the tech community may be facing difficulty staying in England. Future recruitment difficulties could worsen already existing skills shortages within the tech industry.

Research grants that were available to EU partners are now off the board. The end result of all these actions may result in what is being called in England, “Techxit”, the mass exodus of technology firms that may either leave, close their doors, or be gobbled up and moved by EU investors to EU countries.

Presentation Phobia (1): From Power Point to Standing Ovation Every day engineers and technicians are being called upon to stand up and say a few words about their work. On paper, this sounds straightforward, but to those who have to make the presentation it can be a traumatic experience. Much of their nervousness can be reduced (it can seldom be entirely eliminated, as any experienced speaker will tell you) if they learn a few simple public speaking techniques.

In the next several articles, I’ll present the Three Ps of Presentations: Plan, Prepare, and Practice. This article will focus on the most common mistake presenters make: not taking the time to plan.

Establish the Circumstances

Before you begin, your first step is to understand the circumstances affecting your presentation. You must have answers to the following questions: 1. Who will be in my audience?

To focus your presentation properly and use appropriate terminology, you need to know whether your audience contains technical people who have experience in your field, managers who only have a general appreciation of the subject, or laypersons with very little or no technical knowledge.

2. What will they know already?

If you are to avoid boring your listeners by repeating information they already know, or confusing them by omitting essential background details, you need to find out how much they know now about your subject, or will have been told before you address them.

3. How long do you have for the presentation?

Find out how long you have been given. The answer will directly influence how much depth you can give the topic. Do you need to simply give the highlights, or can you provide details? There is nothing more stressful than having 40 minutes of content and finding out too late that you only have 10 minutes to present.

4. Where is the presentation taking place?

Identify whether the location is in your company’s board room, at a client’s site, or in a large conference size meeting room. You will also need to find out what equipment will be available and what you should carry with you. For example, do you bring your own computer and projector? What about a flipchart or white board?

Determine Your Audience’s Needs

We have all sat through boring, long-winded presentations that seem to have no direction. We are in the audience and wonder “What does this have to do with me?” Yet there are other presentations that seem to be tailored specifically to the group. How does the speaker do this?

The major problem with many presentations is that the content is speaker-focused rather than audience-focused. This is an easy trap to fall into. When asked to give a presentation, most inexperienced speakers jot down everything they know about the subject. This is a big mistake. What happens then is that the presentation becomes just that: everything they know about the subject and not what the audience needs to know about the subject.

they may ask about the topic. Try for at least 15 questions. This will help you identify the areas to address and the audience’s concerns before you prepare your content. Now you can answer the audience questions before they even ask them. This turns your presentation from a speaker-focused presentation (“This is everything I know about this topic.”) into an audience-focused presentation (“Here are the answers to your questions on this topic.”).

Most audience questions evolve from fears or concerns. Here are some examples: • How will we do this?

• Will it be expensive?

• Who will be responsible for what?

• How long will it take?

• What needs to be done to complete the task?

• What experience do you have in this field?

Organize Your Information

Once you have identified your audience and listed their questions and concerns, you are ready to start structuring your presentation content.

In their book The Short Road to Great Presentations, (IEEE Press and Wiley-Interscience, 2003), Peter and Cheryl Reimold introduce a formula for structuring a presentation. They call it the Universal Presentation Structure which is especially helpful for technical professionals who relate well to formulas:

Introduction:

1 to 2 minutes

Body:

3 to 5 key points

Conclusion:

1 minute

This structure works for all types and lengths of presentations. If you have only 10 minutes or if you have 90 minutes, all you do is expand the Body. But never go over 5 key points; you will overwhelm your audience.

Tell Your Story Three Times

Another way to view this structure is the TELL-TELL-TELL method.

You have to tell your audience what you have to say three different times in three different ways: Tell 1: Tell your readers what they most need to hear: the key

points. Then outline briefly the main topics you will cover.

Tell 2: Tell all the details associated with the key points, in the same

order you mentioned them in Tell 1.

Tell 3: Sum up by briefly repeating the key points, and possibly

offering a recommendation.

In my next article, I’ll discuss the second P, Prepare.

List Audience Questions

The best way to make your presentation audience-focused is to start by identifying your audience (this is similar to the way you determine your reader in a written document). You need to know the type of person who will attend your presentation, the level of knowledge and interest they have in your topic, and what they will do with your information.

Once you know your audience, list as many questions as you can that get to the point

Attorney-Client Privilege.

A Short Overview.

Attorney-client privilege is considered to be the oldest form of privilege related to confidential communications; that of the communication between an attorney and client. Attorney-client privilege protects specific communications between lawyers and their clients. It allows a client to refuse to disclose and prevents others from disclosing information that was exchanged while seeking or rendering legal advice. To be clear, the privilege belongs to the client, not the attorney. Privilege upholds the public policy of promoting full and frank communication between client and attorney so that the client makes well informed legal decisions in conformance with the law. Of course privilege has also been improperly used to cover up information and to attempt to circumvent the law rather than comply with it.

Attorney-client privilege protects both written and verbal communication from discovery, provided the requirements to maintain that privilege have been met1. To be privileged, a communication: 1.

Must be confidential

2.

Must request legal advise

3.

Must be made to a legal professional

In reality, as with most things legal, this simple three part test is really not simple, and countless court cases have further defined and redefined this three part test in view of the specifics of the case, the skill of the attorneys representing either side, and the judges involved. to say that this three part test exists, and is a valid starting point when determining what is considered to be privileged communications.

The Practice of Patent Law Patent law is a highly complex area of law that involves practice before the USPTO, specialized and often complex subject matter, as well as international aspects which include patent laws of other countries as well as Patent Cooperation Treaty filings. In this area of law, the topic of privileged communications is not to be taken lightly. To further complicate matters, in the practice of patent law there are patent agents and patent attorneys, both being duly licensed by way of a federal (not a state) patent bar exam to represent clients before the USPTO.

Before 1899, there was no registration process at the USPTO, and in 1922 Congress created the patent bar to create a higher standard of practice. Yet for years there was always some question about whether privilege extended to agents as well as attorneys, despite the fact that the Patent Office makes no distinction between agents and attorneys during proceedings before the Office.

Sperry v. Florida ex rel. Florida Bar2 It was not until 1963 that the Supreme Court substantiated the fact that practicing before the USPTO was in fact the practice of law. The Supreme Court ruled that states may not prohibit a federally licensed patent agent from giving advice on patent law, even though it would otherwise constitute the unauthorized practice of law at the state level. Both patent agents and patent attorneys were considered equal in regard to representation of clients and practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Confirmation by the Federal Circuit The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit had not considered the topic of patent agent-client privilege until March 7, 2016, In re: Queen’s University at Kingston, PARTEQ Research and Development Innovations3. Queen’s University sued Samsung in the Eastern District of Texas for infringement of three patents relating to “attentive user interfaces” where an electronic device changes its behavior based on perceiving the attentiveness of the user.

In discovery, Samsung moved the court to compel the production of communications between Queen’s University and its patent agent which discussed prosecution of the patents. After a mandamus review4 the CAFC determined that “patent agents are not simply engaging in law-like activity, they are engaging in the practice of law itself.” The CAFC relied heavily on the 1963 Supreme Court Sperry v. Florida Bar decision, and further stated that “clients have a reasonable expectation that all communications relating to obtaining legal advise on patentability and legal services in preparing a patent application will be kept privileged” whether that advise comes from “an attorney or his or her legal equivalent patent agent should be of no moment.” The CAFC considered if there were a lack of a patent agent-client privilege, there would be a hindrance to communication between patent agents and their clients, which would undermine the purpose that Congress had in mind in admitting agents and attorneys to the patent bar.

The CAFC also looked at the scope of patent agent-client privilege, and looked to the scope of patent agent activities authorized by Congress in reaching its conclusions. The CAFC stated that communications “reasonably necessary and incident to the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and other proceedings before the Office involving a patent application or patent in which the practitioner is authorized to participate receive the benefit of the patent agent privilege.”

Confirmation of Patent Agent-Client privilege by not only the Supreme Court but the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit provides further assurance that communications between you and your patent agent remain protected.

The Street Program Coordinator is responsible for the maintenance of the City’s Street Information System which is used to schedule rehabilitation and preventive maintenance activities to extend the life of City streets. The City of Rochester is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Civil Engineer for the position of Engineer II. An Engineer II is responsible for coordinating activities and supervising staff associated with the completion of civil engineering projects for the City of Rochester, either in the design or construction phase. Harvey Palmer Professorship Endowed at RIT through the Gleason Family Foundation Contribution Retiring dean honored for his stewardship of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering

• Quadrupled the number of female engineering faculty, to nearly 25 percent, (the national average is 16 percent) and helped mentor and promote female engineering faculty and staff into leadership positions in the college and university.

• Dramatically increased the ethnic diversity of the faculty to levels wellabove national averages (14 percent versus 6.2 percent).

The Harvey Palmer Professorship has been established at Rochester Institute of Technology through an endowment made by the Gleason Family Foundation.

Palmer, who is retiring this month (July) after 16 years as dean, is being honored through the professorship for his leadership in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, recognized nationally as one of the top engineering colleges in the country.

The endowment will support the chemical and biomedical engineering programs, two degree programs Palmer established at RIT, and will provide resources to support faculty professional growth, research initiatives, student stipend support and student-engagement opportunities.

“One of the best indicators of excellence of an academic institution is a dramatic increase in demand for admittance by a highly qualified and diverse body of students, and the enthusiastic recognition of its graduates by prospective employers.

Under the leadership of Dean Harvey Palmer, this has become the hallmark of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. It is truly appropriate that this remarkable record by the dean and his fine faculty be recognized,” said James Gleason, chairman of the Gleason Family Foundation and chairman of the board of Gleason Corp. He is also an honorary member of RIT’s Board of Trustees.

“Chemical and biomedical engineering extended our portfolio significantly and extended it in a direction which inevitably allowed us to do even more in terms of gender diversity and industry partners,” said Palmer, who came to RIT in 2000. “It was critical to the future of

the college and its ability to impact the breadth of educational experience of generations of engineers to come. This professorship provides these programs with a source of ongoing funding which will continue to enhance opportunities for them to grow.”

In his 16 years at RIT, Palmer saw its engineering college enrollment increase from just over 2,000 students to 3,494 in 2015, (2,868 as undergraduates, 626 graduate students). Over that time, he also...

• Increased the engineering college’s portfolio of programs to include a Ph.D. in microsystems in 2002, the chemical and biomedical engineering programs in 2008 and 2009, respectively, and a Ph.D. in engineering in 2014.

• Cultivated the growth of prominent educational and research areas such as nano-engineering, 3D printing, advanced manufacturing and sustainable engineering.

• Tripled the number of female students in the engineering college to a level of 30 percent women in the incoming class of 2016.

The Gleason Family Foundation and Gleason Corp. have been long-time partners with RIT and the engineering college, providing significant financial support for programs and scholarships, professorships, and in donating stateof-the-art equipment for student learning and faculty research. In 2010, the foundation donated $3 million to create the Gleason Family Foundation Faculty Development Fund to help recruit and hire faculty for the chemical and biomedical engineering programs, and to assist these faculty to establish laboratory facilities and teaching resources for students in the programs.

Since that time, both programs have seen considerable growth.

An appointment to the Harvey Palmer Professorship will be made by the dean of the engineering college and given to a faculty member from chemical or biomedical engineering who reflects the creativity, vision and studentcentered approach Palmer demonstrated throughout his career as an educator, administrator, mentor and leader.

“Harvey is a dean’s dean,” said RIT Provost Jeremy Haefner. “He cared deeply about the students, having taught classes while a dean for many years.

The legacy of the Harvey Palmer Endowed Professorship is testimony to the commitment Harvey has made to advancing the Kate Gleason College of Engineering and to Rochester Institute of Technology.”

In 1998, the engineering college was formally named after Kate Gleason—business leader, inventor and the first female member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It is the only engineering college in the U.S. named after a woman.

The Gleason Foundation invested many years ago in professorships in mechanical and electrical engineering, both disciplines at the core of what the Kate Gleason College of Engineering is all about—providing highly-skilled engineers necessary to advance product development and the manufacturing industry, Palmer explained. “With the further investment in chemical and biomedical engineering, also essential in our society today, we now have an investment that will sustain the strength of these programs. The faculty and I are grateful and humbled by the Gleason Family Foundation’s generosity and for their support for the growth and ongoing evolution of the college. Apple names game created by three RIT students one of the best apps of 2016 Students win Apple Design Award at Worldwide Developer Conference for Dividr app

A game developed by three Rochester Institute of Technology students has been named one of the most well-designed apps of 2016, according to Apple.

The game app, called Dividr, took home an Apple Design Award at the tech giant’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) June 13 in San Francisco.

Apple gives out 12 Apple Design Awards each year—10 to professionally developed apps and two to student apps. The annual awards are meant to recognize independently developed apps that raise the bar in design, technology and innovation.

Dividr was created by Josh Deichmann, a third-year computer engineering major from Belmont, N.Y.; Patrick Pistor, a third-year web and mobile computing major from Otego, N.Y.; and Erik Lydick a third-year mechanical engineering major from Blue Bell, Pa. Their app was selected out of 350 entries for the student award.

The team received a trophy and international recognition. Within a week of winning the award, downloads of the Dividr app have jumped from about 400 to nearly 12,000. campus news

“Because Apple only gives out 12 or 13 Apple Design Awards each year, these are kind of like Oscars of iOS app development,” said Lydick. “It’s honestly just a bit fantastical—it just doesn’t seem real.”

The student team created Dividr as part of the 2016 RIT iOS App Challenge, an Apple-sponsored hackathon hosted in February at RIT. The goal of the retro 2D arcade game is to move the main player in and out to avoid obstacles on the map and collect coins along the way. You move the player by applying more or less pressure with your finger to the screen.

After winning first-place at the RIT competition, the team released the app on the App Store at the Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival May 7. Deichmann also entered the WWDC Scholarship to win a free ticket for the week-long event for developers.

As part of the scholarship application, Apple asked that he submit an iPhone app he had previously made or a new app he was working on. Out of 350 scholarship winners, two apps were chosen by the company for a Student Apple Design Award. Deichmann

attended the ceremony June 13 in San Francisco.

Writing about the award, Apple says “written entirely in Swift, Dividr uses 3D Touch variance pressure to determine how hard a player is pressing, and its simple, clean design makes this game a delight to play and worthy of winning a Student Apple Design Award.”

“3D Touch is a feature built in to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus that allows the screen to sense how hard you press on it,” said Lydick. “Using this sensor our game divides the player’s icon to dodge obstacles a distance that is proportional to the pressure added to the screen.

Basically, the harder you press on the screen, the farther your player splits apart.”

In the future, the team plans to fix any bugs and work on improving the app.

They hope to one day make it to the featured front page of the App Store.

Campus News RIT professor predicts a universe crowded with black holes Richard O’Shaughnessy co-author of paper in ‘Nature’

A new study published in Nature presents one of the most complete models of matter in the universe and predicts hundreds of massive black hole mergers each year observable with the second generation of gravitational wave detectors.

The model anticipated the massive black holes observed by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory.

The two colliding masses created the first directly detected gravitational waves and confirmed Einstein’s general theory of relativity.

“The universe isn’t the same everywhere,” said Richard O’Shaughnessy, assistant professor in RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences, and co-author of the study led by Krzysztof Belczynski from Warsaw University. “Some places produce many more binary black holes than others. Our study takes these differences into careful account.”

Massive stars that collapse upon themselves and end their lives as black holes, like the pair LIGO detected, are extremely rare, O’Shaughnessy said. They are less evolved, “more primitive stars,” that occur in special configurations in the universe. These stars from the early universe are made of more pristine hydrogen, a gas which makes them “Titans among stars,” at 40 to 100 solar masses. In contrast, younger generations of stars consumed the corpses of their predecessors containing heavy elements, which stunted their growth.

“Because LIGO is so much more sensitive to these heavy black holes, these regions of pristine gas that make heavy black holes are extremely important,” O’Shaughnessy said. “These rare regions act like factories for building identifiable pairs of black holes.”

O’Shaughnessy and his colleagues predict that massive black holes like these spin in a stable way, with orbits that remain in the same plane. The model shows that the alignment of these massive black holes are impervious to the tiny kick that follows the stars’ core collapse. The same kick can change the alignment of smaller black holes and rock their orbital plane.

The calculations reported in Nature are the most detailed calculations of its kind ever performed, O’Shaughnessy said. He likens the model to a laboratory for assessing future prospects for gravitational wave astronomy. Other gravitational wave astronomers are now using the model in their own investigations as well.

“We’ve already seen that we can learn a lot about Einstein’s theory and massive stars, just from this one event,” said O’Shaughnessy, also a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration that helped make and interpret the first discovery of gravitational waves. “LIGO is not going to see 1,000 black holes like these each year, but many of them will be even better and more exciting because we will have a better instrument—better glasses to view them with and better techniques.”

O’Shaughnessy is a member of RIT’s Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation where he collaborates with Carlos Lousto, professor in RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences and a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration.

Campus News Heinzelman is New Dean of UR’s Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Wendi Heinzelman knows firsthand the exciting opportunities for new technology and learning that occur when universities and industries work as partners.

The newly appointed dean of the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester has partnered with Harris RF, for example, on research to develop wireless communications support for deployed solders who need real-time, energy efficient communications options. She also has worked with Xerox, Omni-ID and UCB Corporation on NYSTAR-funded research projects, all through the Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences.

And for the last six summers, she has mentored a total of 10 undergraduate students as part of the Xerox Engineering Research Fellows program, which gives rising juniors and seniors a summer mentored research experience that many students continue into the school year.

As dean, Heinzelman anticipates a wide range of opportunities for the Hajim School to interact with the Rochester engineering community, whether it be encouraging corporate partnerships with students on senior design projects, for example, or engaging faculty with companies through federal SBIR and STTR funding, or helping local companies achieve cutting edge technologies through the AIM Photonics initiative.

“Engineering is key to solving some of our most difficult societal problems and to developing innovations that will transform society in the years to come,” Heinzelman said. “Our faculty and students are engaged in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary research that will have lasting impacts, and I look forward to working with them to advance this work.

“I believe that engineering has relevance to the arts, medicine, social sciences, natural sciences, business and education, and that these disciplines have relevance to engineering; hence, as dean, one of my goals will be

to help find these connections and foster collaborations that will lead to innovative research and educational initiatives.”

Researcher, teacher, administrator

Heinzelman, who is the Hajim School’s first female dean, earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1995, and her master’s and doctoral degrees from MIT in 1997 and 2000, respectively.

She joined the University of Rochester the following year as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Heinzelman’s research focuses on wireless communication, networking, mobile computing, and multimedia communication.

She received the National Science Foundation’s CAREER award and the Office of Naval Research’s Young Investigator (YIP) award in 2005. In 2016 she was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) for her contributions to algorithms, protocols, and architectures for wireless sensor and mobile networks.

Heinzelman, who has taught classes on digital signal processing, wireless communications and wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks, received the University’s prestigious G. Graydon Curtis ’58 and Jane W. Curtis Award for Teaching Excellence in 2003.

In 2008, she was appointed dean of graduate studies for Arts, Sciences & Engineering.

Heinzelman worked with faculty to develop innovative specialized and interdisciplinary graduate programs, such as a master’s degree in alternative energy and a graduate degree program in technical entrepreneurship and management, for those with tech backgrounds who are seeking more entrepreneurial experience. She worked closely with the Goergen Institute for Data Science to develop a master’s degree in data science, which provides training in techniques for analysis of large data sets.

Heinzelman also provided a major focus on recruiting and retaining under-represented minority graduate students, resulting in an increase in applications from this group of 200 percent and an increase in enrollments of 73 percent.

more women to choose engineering and computer science careers, Heinzelman co-founded and co-leads N^2 Women (Networking Networking Women), the first organization of its kind dedicated to supporting women in the field of networking and communications. Since its inception in 2006, the organization has grown to more than 900 members from around the world.

Support from ACM SIGMOBILE, IEEE ComSoc, IEEE Computer Society, Microsoft Research, HP Labs, and Google Research enables students affiliated with N^2 Women to attend conferences and other academic and professional networking events.

Cultivating a passion to ‘change the world’

As dean of the Hajim School, Heinzelman oversees a variety of programs, departments, and institutes, including audio and music engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, data science, electrical and computer engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, and optics.

The Hajim School’s undergraduate enrollment has grown from 747 in 2008, to 1,750 in 2015. The school has 88 tenured and tenuretrack faculty members, 17 additional full-time faculty, 310 master’s students, 320 doctoral students, and more than 20,000 alumni.

“Wendi is one of the most innovative educators I know,” said Rob Clark, who stepped down as the Hajim School dean to become University of Rochester provost. “The Hajim School is in great hands with her at the helm. She is a skilled leader and collaborator who understands the opportunities for engineering programs at local, national and global levels. She will accelerate the momentum of the Hajim School and the University of Rochester in the true spirit of Meliora.”

Campus News RIT partners with Synergy Biogas to tap algae’s ‘green’ power for cleaner water, biofuels Project will add algae to Synergy’s anaerobic digestion process Rochester Institute of Technology and Synergy Biogas are exploring the environmental benefits of microalgae to clean agricultural wastewater and make biofuels.

Jeff Lodge, associate professor in RIT’s Thomas Gosnell School of Life Sciences, is running a three-month pilot program at Synergy Biogas, a high-tech anaerobic digester located on Synergy Farms in Covington, N.Y, to grow microalgae on digested biomass.

Microalgae will consume contaminants in wastewater and produce an algal biomass that Lodge will use as a feedstock for renewable energy.

Lodge will grow the microalgae in a 1,000-gallon tank at Synergy in a process that can be scaled up to treat 52,000 gallons, or 200,000 liters, of wastewater a day. The trial project will demonstrate the organisms’ ability to consume ammonia, phosphorous and nitrogen from digested biomass and reduce contaminants below statemandated levels. Lodge’s laboratory experiments with microalgae have reduced phosphorous in wastewater by greater than 90 percent to levels of 0.1 parts per million, exceeding the required 1 parts per million in New York.

“My research lab has moved from small scale laboratory experiments demonstrating the significant reduction in ammonia, nitrate, phosphate and coliforms in municipal wastewater to larger scale experiments both in the lab and onsite at wastewater treatment plants,” Lodge said.

can further reduce phosphorous and other contaminants from the fertilizer to mitigate the impact of runoff into streams and rivers.

“We are truly excited about the opportunity to work with RIT on this innovative approach—it could be a game-changer toward reducing phosphorous loads—which would go a long way towards keeping the Great Lakes free of algae blooms,” said Lauren Toretta, president of CH4 Biogas, parent company of Synergy Biogas.

“It increases the overall environmental benefit.”

Lodge and his team of RIT students will sample and analyze the effects of algae on the digested biomass throughout the summer.

The leftover algal biomass will be repurposed as a feedstock for renewable energy. Lodge and his students will reclaim the sludge to generate biofuels for cars and trucks. They will isolate lipids to make biodiesel and carbohydrates to produce bioethanol through yeast fermentations. The remaining biomass from lipid and carbohydrate extraction can be added to the anaerobic digester as a co-substrate or can be utilized as a fertilizer.

Lodge’s research investigates the effects of various microalgae to treat wastewater and the potential use of the algal biomass for energy production or in other potential markets.

Microalgae represent an alternative to the use of food feedstocks such as corn, used for bioethanol, and soybean, used for biodiesel, in biofuel production, Lodge said. q

Campus News RIT to offer Ph.D. in Mathematical Modeling in 2017 Emerging discipline connects STEM fields

Rochester Institute of Technology will offer a new Ph.D. in mathematical modeling, beginning in fall 2017.

This emerging discipline integrates applied mathematics with scientific computing to model real systems and to solve research problems across the science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields and complements finance, medicine and social science research. The program is RIT’s eighth doctoral degree and is housed in the College of Science.

Mathematical modeling combines mathematics, logic and scientific computing to simulate and predict future behaviors or measurable results of complex systems found in the real world. Research examples include modeling the heart’s functions, modeling contact lenses to improve the technology and tear-films to understand dry-eye disease, modeling the brain to study concussions and astrophysical systems like binary black holes to simulate gravitational waves. Other modeling applications focus on earth systems to study climate change and finance to predict the function of financial systems.

“This program is the first of its kind nationally,” said Sophia Maggelakis, RIT Dean of the College of Science.

“It promises to serve as a model for a new kind of doctoral training in the mathematical sciences and to position RIT as a leader in that area. We are very excited and are looking forward to greeting the first Ph.D. students who will be accepted to this program and to congratulating the first graduates.”

Students will learn to analyze, solve and interpret equations that address problems in medical sciences, medical devices and drug delivery, computational neuroscience, computational physics and astrophysics, earth systems, defense and financial systems, for instance.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts optimistic employment prospects for those with advanced training in mathematical modeling. Job opportunities for mathematicians are projected to grow 23 percent by 2022— surpassing the average for other occupations. Projections show the best job prospects favoring candidates with advanced mathematical techniques and modeling skills.

report, “The Mathematical Sciences in 2025,” provides strong support for the type of training offered by RIT’s mathematical modeling program and the workforce demand for graduates with advanced skills in this area.

RIT’s Ph.D. program in mathematical modeling will prepare graduates for competitive jobs in industry, government agencies, national research laboratories, business and corporate research, as well as for academic opportunities in applied fields. The curriculum will complement and synergize other RIT programs and support the university’s strategic plan. It will give graduates a solid foundation in the development and application of mathematical models of real-world problems, and train researchers to communicate with colleagues throughout the STEM disciplines.

“Modeling is a challenging area, because a modeler must have a solid foundation in mathematics as well as expertise in the application domain,” said Elizabeth Cherry, associate professor in RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences and director of the mathematical modeling Ph.D. program.

“Our goal is to help students develop the cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills that will enable them to gain new insights into real-world scenarios.”

Students will develop broad modeling, computational and problem-solving skills in a specific application area, such as biomedicine, earth systems modeling, finance, data analytics and simulation of complex systems, and network analysis.

This will be paired with a deep expertise in a concentration area, such as applied inverse problems, biomedical mathematics, discrete mathematics, dynamical systems and fluid dynamics, and geometry, relativity and gravitation.

The program is designed for students with undergraduate majors in the STEM disciplines and mathematics and computer knowledge. In addition to 60 credits of graduate coursework, each student will be required to have an interdisciplinary internship in mathematical modeling outside RIT. The program will culminate with the student’s Ph.D. dissertation.

Smaller stars pack big X-ray punch for developing planets RIT scientist leads study Young stars much less massive than the sun can unleash a torrent of X-ray radiation that can significantly shorten the lifetime of planet-forming disks surrounding these stars.

This result comes from a new study of a group of nearby stars using data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes. Rochester Institute of Technology astronomer Joel Kastner led the study.

Kastner’s team found evidence that intense X-ray radiation produced by some of the young stars in the TW Hya Association (TWA), which is about 160 light years from Earth, has destroyed disks of dust and gas surrounding them.

These disks are where planets form.

The stars are only 8 million years old, compared to the sun’s four-and-a-half billion years. Astronomers want to learn more about systems this young because they are at a crucial age for the birth and early development of planets.

Various research groups have been exploring whether high-energy radiation from young dwarf stars might help “blow away” their planet-forming disks, said Kastner, professor in RIT’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science.

“We were able to take advantage of the TW Hya Association stars, which are some of the nearest known young stars, to make progress—and the answer seems to be an emphatic ‘yes!’” Kastner said. “At the same time, it seems that the lowest mass stars have such wimpy radiation fields that their disks can survive for a surprisingly long time.”

Another key difference between the sun and the stars in the study involves their mass. The TWA stars in the new study contain between about one-tenth to one-half the mass of the sun and also emit less light. Until now, it was unclear whether X-ray radiation from such small, faint stars could affect their planet-forming disks of material. These campus news

latest findings suggest that a faint star’s X-ray output may play a crucial role in determining the survival time of its disk.

These results mean that astronomers may have to revisit current ideas on the formation process and early lives of planets around these faint stars.

Using X-ray data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton observatory and ROSAT (the ROentgen SATellite), Kastner’s team looked at the intensity of X-rays produced by a group of stars in the TWA, along with how common their star-forming disks are. They split the stars into two groups to make this comparison. The first group of stars had masses ranging from about onethird to one-half that of the sun. The second group contained stars with masses only about one-tenth that of the sun, which included relatively massive brown dwarfs, objects that do not have sufficient mass to generate self-sustaining nuclear reactions in their cores.

The researchers found that, relative to their total energy output, the more massive stars in the first group produce more X-rays than the less massive ones in the second. To find out how common planet-forming disks in the groups were, the team used data from NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and, in some cases, groundbased spectroscopy previously obtained by other teams. They found that all of the stars in the more massive group had already lost their planet-forming disks, but only about half of the stars in the less massive group had lost their disks. This suggests that X-rays from the more massive stars are speeding up the disappearance of their disks, by heating disk material and causing it to “evaporate” into deep space.

In previous studies, astronomers found that 10-million-year-old stars in the Upper Scorpius region, another starforming group, displayed a similar trend of an increase in the lifetime of disks for

lower mass stars. However, the Upper Scorpius work did not incorporate X-ray data that might offer an explanation for this trend, which is one reason why this new study of the 8 million-year-old TWA is important. Another reason is that theoretical models of the evolution of planet-forming disks generally predict that the lifetimes of disks should have very little dependence on the mass of the star. The new results for the “puny” TWA stars point to the need to revisit disk evolution models to account for the range in the X-ray outputs of very lowmass stars.

In searching for planets outside of our Solar System, many astronomers have focused their efforts on observing stars less massive than the sun, like those described here. Such stars may offer some of the best targets for direct imaging of exoplanets in the so-called habitable zone, the star-to-planet distance range where liquid water could exist and life may eventually flourish.

These low mass stars are also attractive targets because they are relatively faint and planets in their habitable zones should be easier to detect and investigate.

These results appear in The Astronomical Journal. 100th Anniversary Edition of Marks’ Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers In 1916, Lionel Simon Marks published the first edition of Marks’ Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers.

His intention was “to supply both the practicing engineer and the student with a reference work which is authoritative in character and which covers the field of mechanical engineering in a comprehensive manner” (Preface to 1st Edition). Born in Birmingham, England, Marks immigrated to the United States in 1892 and received a fellowship to Cornell University. Marks was a professor of mechanical engineering at both Harvard and MIT (Wikipedia).

The original edition represented the work of over fifty specialists in their respective fields. The most recent edition (2006) had well over 150 specialists contributing to it. Several engineers from the local area, including members of MPES, will be contributing to the next edition of the Handbook. Much has changed in the world of engineering since Professor Marks published his first edition in 1916. Look for the release of the 100th Anniversary edition in late 2016 / early 2017.

MPES Welcomes New Officers and Board Members for 2016-2017 As of September 1, 2016, new officers and board members will be joining the MPES Board of Directors. MPES would like to thank our outgoing President, Christopher R. Devries, P.E. for his service and leadership for the 2015-2016 year. In September, Chris will be moving into the role of Immediate Past-President. We would also like to thank our outgoing Secretary, Derek Anderson, P.E. for his service. Derek also served as a director for several years prior to taking on the role of Secretary.

We will welcome a new officer and board member to the role of Secretary for 2016-2017, Professor Martin E. Gordon, P.E. Professor Gordon is currently Professor and Program Director for Undergraduate Studies for Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology and brings a wealth of experience to the MPES Board. We also welcome James Drago, P.E. to the board of directors. Mr. Drago is currently the Principal Applications Engineer at Garlock Sealing Technologies and an active member of MPES.

RIT and Cornell were second and third, respectively. Mike Schmidt was an early member of the RIT Baja team. For several years, the team did not compete and it was through his influence and several other RIT Baja alumni to resurrect the team, competing in the three national events through SAE. Schmidt, however, died in a car accident just short of his graduation from RIT. Marty Gordon, team advisor and Rochester event coordinator recommended the award to recognize Schmidt’s inspiration.

Schmidt’s father, Michael, presented the award.

“The award has been around,” said Michael Schmidt of the numerous collegiate teams from around the world that have won the cup since it was first given in 2001. “This recognizes the sacrifices and the force of excellence that it takes for teams to build the cars, and to complete in three major events over the year.”
