The Timeline over Piedmont Park

22

The growing movement and exploration of Black compositional thought, coloniality, indigeneity, con ceptions of space-time fugitivity, and Black spatial praxes, has sparked an important social, political, and architectural revolution in thought and space. The attention to a cause that is about awareness and change alongside a dedication to the origins of a culture will seemingly result in an architecture that will follow in stride. Design will continue to evolve with experimentation in material technology, and creative expression that it has proven to do so in the past. However, an important attention designers our job is to dabble in the arts and sciences but it is most important that we have a full and replicable understanding of the relevances of the targeted audience, the intended site context, and the implications of the design. This will be explored through the meticulous use of material systems and organization of spaces to emulate feelings and emotions that help to educate a building’s inhabitants. The development of future of architecture.”

Investigation into Facade This research proposal intends to provide another outlook of possibilities for a renovation of the Atlanta Central Library that looks to bring light into the space without bringing in an excess of heat, provide an improved look from the exterior without disrupting the original geometric design intent

for visitors of the library.

Sun Study A sun study analysis of the Atlanta Central Library looked at three primary times, at opening time (10 a.m.), lunch time (12 p.m.) and closing time (5 p.m.) and amongst three busiest months of the year, March, July, and November. The results revealed that rarely at any time or month of the year does the entire facade, aside from 10 a.m. in November, receive complete exposure to sunlight. The shade from neighboring high rise buildings helps to prevent overwhelming amounts of daylight and unwanted heat from entering the library.

Sustainability Pre-cast concrete facade elements that will be removed from the exterior facade can be reused in the interior space to protect bookshelves from excess heat exposure, provide an opportunity to light book shelves from above, and provide an opportunity for seating. Concrete elements can be easily cut down and chiseled to match design goals, however the resulting

design mimics the same shape of the pieces that will be removed from the exterior.
