Timber Monogamy

My thesis, ‘Timber Monogamy,’ is a bold exploration of the potential for carbon-sequestration through timberonly construction. Inspired by traditional Japanese joinery, I adapted these techniques for CNC manufacturing.

This culminated in the realization of an entirely timber structure, serving as a real-world proving ground for a novel approach to sustainable architecture.

The project’s success hinged on two innovative joint designs (pictured below). The first, a hybrid half-lap/wedge joint, and the second, a bowtie/wedge joint, both leveraged the precision of CNC-routed dovetail slopes to achieve self-locking assembly. This approach eliminated the need for fasteners or adhesives, streamlining the construction process and reducing environmental impact.

Envisioning an extreme-density future for Auckland’s metropolitan area, ‘The Vertical Stage’ reimagines the traditional Kapa Haka experience. This novel architectural proposal features a multi-level performance space where performers and audience occupy opposing sides of a soaring atrium. This dynamic design amplifies the confrontational nature of Kapa Haka, transforming the atrium into a vibrant hub of energy during performances.

The Vertical Stage’ isn’t simply a static performance venue. When not hosting Kapa Haka events, its versatile floor plan morphs into an engaging museum and gallery dedicated to showcasing the cultural significance and evolution of this powerful Maori tradition.

Currently under construction on the pristine Te Arai beach north of Auckland, this luxury retreat was designed as a haven for two families to come together for holidays. I had the privilege of assisting renowned architects Noel Lane and Tom Rowe during the early and developed design stages, contributing to the creation of this exceptional coastal sanctuary.

Kingsland Centre

Kingsland Centre

The Kingsland Centre is a mixed-use development that seamlessly connects the elevated Kingsland street to the overground train line at the rear. The building features a public library and gallery at the train station level, while the upper floors are dedicated to residential apartments. The building’s curvaceous design concept was conceived through rigorous analysis of people’s movements through the site, ensuring a fluid and intuitive flow throughout the space.

Tensegrity Sphere

This sculpture draws inspiration from R. Buckminster Fuller’s tensegrity sphere. Remarkably, it involves no welding or bonding; every one of the 540 pieces is held together solely by tension and compression. Each piece rests on two points at its ends and is pushed inward at two central points, creating a stable structure through precise balance.

One of the most impactful experiences in improving my drawing and sketching skills was taking an elective course in life drawing. These examples showcase different timeframes: 5 seconds, 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 10 minutes, respectively.

Bridge

The project brief was designed to test our structural knowledge by challenging us to build a 1-meter bridge using only popsicle sticks and string. The goal was to achieve the highest possible strength-to-weight ratio. I focused on maximizing the lightweight and high tensile strength properties of the string, using popsicle sticks primarily in compression where necessary. This approach resulted in a strength-to-weight ratio of 511, setting a university record that still stands today.

Tensile Desk

My fascination with tension and tensile strength, combined with the need for a new desk, inspired me to design and build a unique desk. It is supported by compression at the center and stabilized with 2mm steel cables. To test its structural integrity, I used my own body weight (80kg live load) off-center as a measure of success. The result is an elegant and robust desk.

To ensure the desktop could withstand the high bending forces, I laminated two bamboo composite panels, incorporating structural flanges similar to the design of an ‘I’ beam.

Recycled Kauri Bed

As a test of my design skills and a commitment to environmental consciousness, I embarked on this project by ordering a pallet of recycled timber that was destined for disposal. Once the timber arrived, I carefully sorted through the wood and sanded it down, revealing the beautiful hardwood grain in some pieces.

With a selection of ‘good’ timber in hand, I began designing a piece that would work harmoniously with the available sizes and shapes of the reclaimed wood. The result was a strong, stable, and beautifully crafted creation that showcased the unique character of each piece of timber, turning discarded materials into a stunning and functional work of art.

Feather Bed

This bed is designed as a functional sculpture that playfully interacts with light. Its base is supported by 24 radially arranged fins with progressively larger gaps, allowing light to filter through. The effect is a cozy atmosphere that provides just the right amount of illumination for nighttime routines, gently aligning with your circadian rhythm.

Tree Trunk Shelf

This desk was conceived as a striking design featuring three platforms that give the illusion of weightlessness.

These platforms are supported off-center by a series of fins, which are arranged in a carefully considered pattern. The overall effect is a visually captivating piece that merges modern aesthetics with an organic sensibility, creating a unique focal point in any space.

Tree Trunk Shelf

The pattern of the supporting fins was inspired by a 3D scan of a tree trunk. By incorporating this scan into the design, the desk reflects the intricate and natural forms found in nature. This fusion of technology and organic beauty enhances the desk’s distinctive character and underscores its connection to the natural world.
