An inside look at how Freedom Springs gets ready for opening day

Relaxing in a deck chair with the warm sun on your face, wearing your favorite sunglasses and brand new swimsuit, you probably aren’t thinking about all the work that has gone on behind the scenes to bring the pool to life. But in the quiet weeks before opening day, Freedom Springs is already waking up. The slides are dry, the lounge chairs stacked, and the lazy river is anything but. To a passerby, it might look like nothing is happening. But if you look closely, you’ll see the crews arriving early, often bundled against the morning cold, armed with pressure washers and waterproof boots.
So what does it take to get the pool ready for opening day? The answer might surprise you.
First, the water lines are de-winterized. Then the pool surfaces are power washed and nearly 700,000 gallons of new water is filled and treated. The pool is then vacuumed and decks are prepped with tables, chairs and sunbrellas.
How does Freedom Springs keep everything sanitary?

Mandatory water sample submission reports are made to the health department once a week to ensure the levels are safe and effective. Additionally, pool staff run water tests every hour and the health department visits the pool 1-2 times per season to test the water and overall condition.
But Freedom Springs isn’t just water - it’s people.
As the physical space comes together, a new group begins to take shape: the seasonal staff. Lifeguards, concession workers, and front desk attendants arrive for training before the public ever sees the gates open. Lifeguards practice rescues in the freshly filled pools, their movements sharp and rehearsed. They learn the rhythms of the park, the zones they’ll watch, the signals they’ll use. It’s serious work, even in a place designed for fun.
Finally, the gates swing open, and the stillness of spring gives way to the energy of summer. Kids rush toward the water, drawn to slides and splash zones. The lazy river finally lives up to its name, carrying laughter and conversation along its gentle current. To visitors, it feels immediate; as if it all came together overnight.
But beneath that first splash is over 1,000 hours of preparation, care, and intention; the result of a quiet, behind-the-scenes story that began long before the sun was warm enough to swim.
