WHAT WE DO

WHAT WE DO Homelessness is a bigger and more complex problem than any one agency, individual, or government entity can solve. That’s where the Greenville Homeless Alliance (GHA) comes in.

Created in 2018 by direct service providers, local government, philanthropy, faith, and business leaders, GHA is a collective that works with individuals, policymakers, and organizations to educate the community, advocate for change, and find innovative solutions to help end homelessness across Greenville County.

GHA’s work is implemented by staff and the dynamic 60+ members of our working groups. These volunteers ensure GHA’s strategic goals are accomplished as a convener, educator, innovator, and advocate.

Our goals were lofty in 2024, but the commitment of our working group members, volunteers, and partner organizations resulted in remarkable outcomes...new data, new solutions, and a renewed commitment to end homelessness in our community.

HIGHLIGHTS In addition to making significant headway on this year’s top goals, here’s a look at some of the other ways GHA’s partners and stakeholders impacted the community in 2024.

OUR IMPACT 2024 HIGHLIGHTS Advocacy We exist to advocate for relationships, services, housing, and policies to help those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.

Advocacy Agenda In 2024, GHA updated our Advocacy Agenda and engaged stakeholders in advocacy for issues including affordable housing, eviction, fair lending, and community development.

We worked alongside partners including the Greenville Affordable Housing Coalition, Fair Lending Alliance, United Way of Greenville County, Sisters of Charity Foundation of SC, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, and Impact Greenville.

Advocacy Training Academy GHA Advocacy Training Academy was created by the Advocate Working Group in 2021 to increase the number of local residents who understand and are willing to engage in advocacy that impacts homelessness in Greenville County. In 2024, 5 sessions were offered reaching over 300 attendees.

CONNECT TO 2024 ADVOCACY AGENDA

On December 3, the Greenville County Council approved the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) after its third reading.

This was an important milestone for housing, transit, and land use advocates. GHA is a proud partner of Impact Greenville and mobilized speakers and advocates to support the policy.

US Supreme Court Ruling - Johnson v. Grants Pass

In April, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) heard the case of Johnson v.

Grants Pass, Oregon, a court case originally filed in 2018 that determined it is cruel and unusual punishment to arrest or ticket people for sleeping outside when they have no other safe place to go. On June 28, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the City of Grants Pass, opening the door for communities to enact policies that criminalize homelessness. GHA reached out to all six municipalities in Greenville County sharing information about the case and inviting conversations about homelessness, the resources available locally, and solutions that are working.

Advocacy Connection Pop-Ups Advocacy Connection pop-ups made a debut this year to facilitate deeper connections and conversations between advocates interested in ending homelessness in their local communities. Invitations were sent to Advocacy Training Academy participants, GHA Working Group members, and local elected officials. These small informal gatherings were held once a month in different municipalities across Greenville County and included advocacy updates, networking, and an opportunity to hear from each host City’s leaders. GHA’s Advocate Working Group members developed and hosted all six sessions and welcomed more than 55 participants including 2 Mayors, 5 City Council Members, and 3 City Administrators.

OUR IMPACT TOP GOAL SPOTLIGHT

SUPPORT AND LEAD EVICTION EDUCATION IN GREENVILLE COUNTY

In May of 2024, GHA and Catalyst Consulting partnered to convene stakeholders involved in every part of the eviction process to gather input and feedback that would offer a better understanding of the local impact of evictions. After listening sessions, interviews, and additional research to explore solutions implemented in other parts of the state and country, a community strategy paper and website were developed. These tools will be used in continued community efforts to implement solutions and reduce the negative impact evictions have on tenants, landlords, employers, and the broader community that were revealed in the paper.

OUR IMPACT 2024 HIGHLIGHTS Education A critical part of our mission is engaging the community through education. When people are equipped with data and stories that can inform decisions, we begin to see changes in policies, processes, and resources that impact homelessness.

Each training, while often customized, explains the nonprofits operating in each part of the system addressing homelessness, from day shelters and outreach services to overnight emergency shelters, mental health and substance use services, legal aid, food, and affordable housing. At a minimum that is approximately 800 times a year we are lifting up GHA partners and sharing how a connected community of nonprofits collaborate to solve homelessness 365 days a year!

Homelessness 101 Education Sessions GHA engaged with over 3,600 people this year in training sessions, podcasts, panel discussions, and tabling events. Using the Homelessness 101 curriculum as a foundation, staff and volunteers shared what homelessness looks like locally, the key causes, and current solutions we can engage in as a community. Combining education sessions and other communication tools like the monthly GHA Update, social media, and videos on our YouTube Channel, GHA estimates total reach to be 133,000 people.

Stories of Hope We continued our Stories of Hope education series with the creation of ten new videos and three written stories that focus on the impact of eviction and the work of our Housing Navigator. Many thanks to Bob Jones University Cinematic Arts Department, Leap Communications, and Julia Bellew for capturing these stories.

OUR IMPACT 2024 HIGHLIGHTS Education In 2024, GHA partnered with the Upstate Continuum of Care, Greenville Affordable Housing Coalition, and Ten at the Top to offer collaborative Stakeholder meetings. The purpose of these cross-sector gatherings is to educate and engage the community. Topics covered in 2024 included Greenville Homeless Court, affordable housing, homelessness in the Upstate, and updates from GHA partner organizations.

Landlord Engagement Events Led by the Collaborate Working Group, 20+ GHA partner organizations coordinated two landlord education events in 2024. The first in May, was held at Bank of America and featured speakers including Taylor Davis, NHE, Inc. CEO, Mario Brown - Affordable Upstate CEO, and Adrick Ceasar - The Good Shepherd’s House, LLC CEO discussing the benefits of providing affordable housing. Local service organizations provided information on resources for landlords and tenants.

In October, a landlord lunch and learn was held at the Upper State Apartment Association (USAA), a new GHA partner that continually provides outstanding industryrelated education and public relations, and currently represents more than 70,000 units through apartment communities, management companies, and supplier members. This event provided presentations and discussion on eviction alternatives. GHA would like to thank this year's event sponsors, speakers, planning committee, and attendees.

SEEN | HEARD | VALUED MURAL DEDICATION The Greenville Homeless Alliance (GHA) hosted a mural ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Seen | Heard | Valued Mural created by local artist Nick Burns aka Ninja Picasso. The 47-foot-high mural covers the back wall of Triune Mercy Center’s sanctuary and honors those experiencing homelessness in Greenville County and the community that offers solutions and hope. The mural was commissioned by GHA in celebration of its 5th birthday in 2023 and features faces of local individuals and families that have experienced homelessness. By working with many of the organizations that make up GHA, these faces also have stories of hope to share.

It included original works by artist Nick Burns, aka Ninja Picasso and shared glimpses of his process in creating the Seen | Heard | Valued mural. It also featured. OUR IMPACT 2024 HIGHLIGHTS Innovation We convene cross-sector partners to leverage expertise, perspectives, and resources to explore unique solutions for complex problems surrounding homelessness. Together, we are raising awareness about innovative solutions and piloting new ideas.

GVL iGNITE Fund Pilot The GVL iGNITE Fund was created to help people experiencing chronic homelessness (more than one year) move into stable housing. Working together with frontline service organizations, landlords, and GHA’s Housing Navigator, the GVL iGNITE Fund can be the missing piece that completes the housing puzzle for someone working to exit homelessness.

Introduced in 2023, this year, the iGNITE Fund was used to support the Housing Navigators' work when no other funding could be secured.

Key uses for the fund this year included: Provided quicker access to funding - Traditional government funding can take years to secure and often doesn’t cover items like application fees, deposits, moving costs, or landlord incentives.

Provided stabilization by filling rent gap - Many individuals referred to the Housing Navigator have barriers that prevent them from qualifying for traditional funding sources like vouchers or government subsidized housing. The GVL iGNITE Fund can fill the rent gap for people who can't get help any other way.

CONVENE A MICROHOME PILOT In 2024, GHA continued as convener of a partnership launched in 2023 with Soteria Community Development Corporation (CDC) a nonprofit serving men and women returning to Greenville County from incarceration, Greenville County Schools Fine Arts Center Architecture and Bonds Career Center Building Construction programs, Clancy Theys Construction Company, Craig Gaulden Davis, Architecture 224 LLC, and Johnston Design Group to kickstart a supportive microhome pilot community of affordable rental homes for people graduating from Soteria’s 12-month reentry program and for people emerging from homelessness. The first microhome was designed and is being built by Greenville County students. Once complete it will go on display at Roper Mountain Science Center for a year before moving to a permanent foundation on Soteria’s site.

In May, Greenville Women Giving awarded a collaborative grant for the construction of two additional microhomes. The designs were created by the Fine Arts Center students with construction drawings completed by Architecture 224 and Johnston Design Group.

HOUSING NAVIGATOR PILOT In 2023, GHA partnered with the Piedmont Health Foundation to hire DeAndra “DJ” Hillman as GHA’s Housing Navigator for Greenville County. The Housing Navigator is leading a pilot from January 2024 - December 2026 that focuses on creating a bridge between Housing Providers and Frontline Service Providers working with people experiencing chronic homelessness. This pilot seeks to explore what innovative and flexible practices can transform how our community connects people who have experienced chronic homelessness to stable homes, ultimately improving their overall health outcomes.

Working Groups

In 2024, more than 60 Stakeholders from 50 different organizations participated in Working Groups. These groups implement GHA’s strategic plan and apply their experience from the business, non-profit, faith community, education, health, and government sectors to the complex work of impacting homelessness.

Volunteer Investment The Greenville Homeless Alliance is made up of 565 organizations and 1850 individuals working together to end homelessness. GHA doesn’t work without the intentional efforts and leadership of these committed individuals.

Working group members and other volunteers invested more than 1800 hours in 2024 to change systems and end homelessness. Their strategic and thoughtful work is reflected on every page of this impact report.
