Finally, I’d like to add some thoughts about technology and Cuba. Recently we learned that Alan Gross was freed from a Cuban jail where he had been incarcerated for the past five years. Alan Gross had been working on assignment as a subcontractor for US AID installing technology and internet service for the Cuban Jewish community headquarters in Havana. He was arrested in 2009 in Cuba and sentenced to 15 years in prison for importing “banned technology and trying to establish clandestine internet service for Cuban Jews.” The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington and Jewish Federations of North America along with other Jewish organizations and Federations across North America, including our own, have been advocating for his release during these past years, including recent efforts. It is fitting that his release came about on the first day of Chanukah and we share in his family’s joy and thank President Obama and his administration for working to free Alan Gross.

Tom and Linda Sloan - Creating a Jewish Legacy Both of our parents

Although I felt I never Sloan Linda grew up in the Midwestern town of Painesville, Ohio, and was skeptical about Greensboro when we moved here in 1970. She came with every prejudice a northerner could have about the South. But soon enough, we were both drawn into community life, and one of our first involvements was with the Federation Young Leadership group. This was our springboard into community service.

We were both raised in small Jewish communities.

In Greensboro, my Sunday school class was comprised of nine boys, no girls.

Linda went to Sunday school in Cleveland, Ohio, but back in Painesville she was the only Jewish student in her high school class of 176. She had a strong Jewish identity because she felt she needed to be the spokesperson for what was Jewish.

received a full Jewish education in Sunday school, I did develop an early attachment to Jewish causes, and this came from my father’s mentorship. Having escaped Germany in 1939, he lived his whole life with the regret that he was never able to rescue his father, my grandfather, from the Holocaust. He was very focused on Israel and the idea of a Jewish homeland. He was also very involved in the local community, gave generously to the campaign every year, and even chaired it once.

In my family, going to services at Temple Emanuel was sort of a routine; we went at least once a month. I still enjoy attending Friday night services, and in particular, I like going to the new Temple on Jefferson Road.

I was very involved in the new facility—envisioning the project, raising money

Dear Susan, I have heard of Create a Jewish Legacy, and I know that the goal of the initiative is to raise funds for the Jewish institutions in Greensboro. I'm still not sure what you mean by “legacy giving.” How does it work?

Thanks, Mystified Dear Mystified, Some individuals are fortunate enough to be able to make significant gifts to the institutions they are passionate about and be recognized and honored during their lifetimes. Others make annual gifts but do not feel they are in a position to make a substantial gift. They are concerned about having enough money to last through retirement and to leave to their heirs.

Fortunately, there are many ways to leave a gift after your lifetime. This is what we mean by “legacy” gift. More than just a monetary gift, it is a testament to your values and your life story that you are sharing with your heirs and our community. By working with the Foundation, you can make those plans and be recognized now for a gift that will be made in the future.

Some of the legacy options include designating the Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy or leaving a percentage of your estate to the Foundation. There are other

options dealing with real estate or other assets that might be right for you. Anyone can Create a Jewish Legacy.

Consider your legacy – what is it that you wish to share? Whom do you want to honor? Which institutions, both Jewish and secular, have been important to you? You might discuss these questions with your parents, significant other, and children. When you have an idea of which institutions you would like to support, give me a call, and we can schedule a confidential conversation to discuss how you can accomplish your goals.

The first step is to complete a “Declaration of Intent,” choosing which institutions will be included in your legacy plans. The next step is to meet with your financial and legal advisors or make changes to beneficiary designations on your retirement account or life insurance policy. You can change amounts or organizations at any time. Once your Declaration of Intent is signed, you will be a member of our Legacy Society, and if you wish for us to share your intentions with the institutions you have selected, you will be part of their Legacy Societies as well.

I hope you will join me in creating a Jewish legacy.

extended family and their grandparents. When each daughter got engaged, we sat down with her and her fiancé and had a serious discussion about a number of topics, one of them being Judaism. We wanted our daughters and their fiancés to understand what being Jewish meant to us, how it had shaped the lives of our parents and us, and how we valued that Jewish heritage. We wanted

them to understand how our families had come out of experiences that were very specific to Jews—the pogroms in Russia, the Nazi Holocaust. Even though two of the young men were not Jewish, we wanted them to understand why Judaism was important to us and why we felt it very important for them to understand, preserve and value Jewish tradition in addition to their individual religious beliefs. Subsequently, all three of our daughters’ families and all nine of our grandchildren are being raised Jewish.

On occasion when our young grandchildren are with us on the holidays, I’ve made it a point to take the older ones to services. They ask earnest, insightful questions—what should we pray about?

What makes Yom Kippur special? These spiritual learning moments are very important to me, and I think they are meaningful to our grandchildren, too.

We relish the opportunity to teach our

sons-in-law, too. One in particular told us how he grew up in a family where, when someone came and asked for money, the reaction was “Ugh, they’re at the door again…Leave me alone!” But he said recently that his outlook has changed a great deal since getting to know us and talking to us about the importance of both asking for money in a community, and feeling good about giving money.

Those of us who have earned more than we need to spend on a daily basis are really blessed with the opportunity to help others.

Giving is not a burden; it is a privilege. For us it is also an opportunity because we have chosen to be actively involved in the organizations to which we have donated.

ewish overnight summer camp is a wonderful experience to give your child and is one of those pivotal experiences that helps form Jewish identity. We know how expensive these programs have become, so we have tried to provide information and assistance to help parents with this. “A Guide to Financial Assistance for Jewish Overnight Summer Camp for Greensboro Area Families” is available at www.shalomgreensboro.org (click on “I want to” and then on “go to camp”) with some of the points summarized below.

The Greensboro Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Services have several programs available to help with the cost of camp. This includes the One Happy Camper First Year Incentive Grant, made possible by the combined efforts of the Federation, Temple Emanuel, and Beth David Synagogue. Contact Rachel Wolf at the Federation regarding this program.

You can reach her at 852-5433, ext. 229 or rwolf@shalomgreensboro.org. Jewish Family Services has funds to provide scholarships based on financial need to both new and returning campers. Go to www.shalomgreensboro.org and you will find the application there as well as the above mentioned information sheet. The JFS application is always due the last day of February.

Other programs for first time campers

include the Stanley Shavitz Camp Judaea Camper Incentive Grant for first time campers attending Camp Judaea. There is also a brand new program that many of the camps are participating in called BunkConnect, which anticipates a certain number of empty slots and enables middle income families to obtain those beds at a significant cost reduction. This is a small program and only available to first time campers. You can read more about this and apply atwww.bunkconnect.org.

Other sources include the Bradley J. Starr Campership Funds at Temple Emanuel to campers who are past their first year attending camp. You do not have to be a Temple member to apply for that fund.

How do I Choose a Nursing Home? nursinghomecompare) allows individuals to compare information about nursing homes. Any facility that is certified to participate in Medicare and/or Medicaid is included on this website. This website features a quality rating system. There are three quality areas, as well as one overall score, that are rated with “stars”, one through five. A quality rating of one star is considered much below average, while a quality rating with five stars is considered much above average. The three areas are: Health Inspections, Staffing, and Quality Measures.

“Health Inspections” includes information from on site inspections, both the annual standard surveys and complaint focused surveys. “Staffing” ratings include information related to the average number of hours of direct care provided to each resident by the nursing

staff. Finally, “Quality Measures” include information about 9 different physical and clinical measures of resident care.

Examples of this include the prevalence of pressure sores or changes in a resident’s mobility.

The information on the CMS Nursing Home Compare website is useful but should be utilized as only one resource in this decision. Additionally, local advocacy groups and the state ombudsman program can provide assistance in your decision as well.

Additional considerations about specialty care needs (i.e. dementia or specialized rehab) and proximity to family members are important in choosing the best facility too. Having a family member visit the nursing home is essential, as this offers important perceptions about the rehab experience (cleanliness, customer

Volunteers from the community met on Sunday, Dec. 14 to wrap gifts collected from the Matnat Mitzvah project and then delivered the gift bags to seniors in facilties or in their homes.

These young women also volunteered at the community Hanukkah party at Abbotswood and helped distribute song sheets and refreshments.

Chai Notes facilitator Katy Claussen worked with B’nai Chai Shalom Day School to have kindergarten students join residents of Abbotswood for music, conversation, and a joint creative Hanukkah project.

JFS staff joined the ESL class for older adults from the FSU to celebrate Hanukkah. Members of the class made Russian foods and enjoyed jelly donuts and latkes.

Everyone participated in a creative art project led by Katy Claussen from the JFS Chai Notes program.

Working with BSDS staff and students, Katy Claussen led an intergenerational program at Well Spring. The children performed Hanukkah music, chatted in small groups with the seniors, and blended their voices in a lively Hanukkah song taught by Katy. Chai Notes also brought Hanukkah celebrations to Brighton Gardens, Heritage Greens, Carolina Estates, and the Blumenthal Jewish Nursing Home.

A Letter From the JFS Board President to Her Daughter: Why JFS Matters

By Paula Katz Dear Julie, You know how I love to write you letters about all kinds of stuff so just add this one to your keepsake box so you can look at it from time to time. This is about a special place in Greensboro that I want you to know about now so as you grow up, you know that there is a Jewish organization that will be there for you from now until you are an old lady. It's called Jewish Family Services and they have offices here in Greensboro, just a few minutes from our house.

Last year, you went with your religious school class to participate in the food pantry program and learned about hunger and then helped fill the pantry with food that your class collected. I was so proud of you for sorting the food and for listening to Betsy Gamburg, the JFS Director, talk about hunger. This is the same place we went for the Parent Child Book Club.

You and I read “Wonder” together every night and we had some great talks about it for weeks. And Mitzvah Day is another JFS thing (along with the

whole Jewish community). You’ve been a volunteer every year since you were really little. You also helped me pack and deliver Rosh Hashanah goody bags to some nice Grandmas. When you grow up, I hope you can count on having the same cool programs for your kids.

I also want you to know that JFS helps kids go to Jewish sleep away camps and so if we need help with some of the costs, we can ask them for support. I know that you would love to travel to Israel one day and you will most likely get some help from JFS for that too.

When you are in middle school and high school, you can volunteer even more at JFS—visiting people at home or helping run programs or volunteering for Christmas at Cone. I myself have enjoyed volunteering at the senior luncheons, making cards for people in the hospital, and going to Hanukkah at Abbotswood with you.

I’ve been in Raleigh these past few weeks, recovering from surgery, and when I come home this Friday, I’ll be able to use the JFS van to get to and from my physical therapy appointments.

I’m hoping that van will run until I am 80 years old so you won't have to

worry about me getting to my doctor’s appointments or to fitness classes at the Y. You know I’m a counselor, so I’m also glad that JFS has staff that can talk to people who are having problems. Always remember how important it is to reach out and ask for help when you need it.

Is your head exploding with all the amazing stuff that JFS does? Now you

understand why I go to meetings for this amazing agency and why we need this agency to make life better here in Greensboro for all of us, young or old.

BROTHERS tells the story of two Jewish brothers, whose choices and values have driven them apart, meet again in Israel after many years of silence. Dan has been living on a secular kibbutz for 25 years. His deeply religious brother, Aaron, is a distinguished lawyer and Torah scholar based in New York. Aaron is invited to Jerusalem to defend a group of Yeshiva students who have refused military service in the IDF. Enter Shelly, the driven, fiercely secular public prosecutor determined to see justice done. The conflict between the two brothers and the legal struggle between prosecutor and defense lawyer reflect a society torn between its religious and political principles. A complex story that shies away from stereotyping and an ambiguous conclusion lend this film an air of profound authenticity at a time when Israelis are increasingly struggling with what it means to be a Jewish state.

Kids’ Classic Film: AN AMERICAN TAIL

The other new offering this year is a Kids’ Classic film, An American Tail, shown at Geeksboro Coffeehouse Cinema, February 8, 3:30 p.m. AN AMERICAN TAIL, the first animated feature presented by Steven Spielberg and directed by former Disney animator Don Bluth, tells the story of Fievel Mousekewitz and his Russian-Jewish mouse family’s escape from their homeland in the late 1800s. Boarding a boat headed for America to evade the Czarist rule of the Russian cats, Fievel gets separated from his mom and dad. Forced to navigate the streets of New York all alone, Fievel meets his share of friendly and hostile mice, and even befriends one of the dreaded cats. Together on SUPER SUNDAY, February 1, we will celebrate the powerful, positive role that “giving” plays in our world. SUPER SUNDAY is about participation, being part of a community, and helping others. The Telethon is a tradition for many volunteers and it is also a day that brings first timers to the Federation family. The morning is packed with energy, prizes, food, friendship and phoning.

“While the atmosphere will be fun-filled, the cause is serious,” according to Telethon co-chair, David Levine. “Funds raised on Super Sunday are a vital source for ongoing Jewish humanitarian support in the U.S., Israel and 60 countries around the world.”

2015 BJH Foundation Grant Application Available

JH Foundation wants to help your non-profit organization become a grant recipient. The application process for the 2015 grant cycle begins now.

BJH Foundation is excited to begin its 8th year of awarding grants to nonprofit organizations that enhance the lives of older Jewish adults. If you are a non-profit synagogue, school, or another organization with a 501(c)(3) status and you serve the older Jewish adult population in North or South Carolina, you could be eligible for a grant.

BJH Foundation has awarded more than $1.6 million in grants. Our older Jewish adults have been the winning recipients of these funds as a result of the incredible programs and services non-profit organizations have provided.

Your organization could be one of the lucky recipients if you have a qualifying program or service, complete a grant application following the guidelines, and submit is by the deadline.

We realize there are many more possible ways to enhance the lives of our older Jewish adults. This is an opportunity for your organization to help us create a win-win situation for everyone. We want to know about your program or service by

completing the application along with the required details. Remember to include the baby boomers in your programs as they enter this special population group.

The past eight grant cycles have shown us how dedicated the various organizations can be with all the creative programs and services they provide. The New Jew in America

T

he Jewish people have traced their ancestry for three thousand years or more. Notwithstanding horrific obstacles that stood in the path of our continuity we have not only managed to survive, we have thrived, grown, and prospered to reach the twenty-first century. And I am confident we will continue to do so. For thousands of years, we have questioned our prospect for survival and pondered if the next generation of Jews would be the last. Predictions of our demise have yet to materialize but concern continues, and with good reason.

Our ancestors could have never imagined the world in which we now live, or our success. Nor can we prognosticate with any certainty about the Jewish community of the future. Many believe that future is in serious jeopardy. I share this concern with good reason but I also hold great hope and am proof positive about those with whom the future will be entrusted.

Jews have evolved, adapted, and maintained their sacred traditions over centuries. The evidence is clear from our past and there is little doubt to believing these trends will not manifest themselves in the future.

My Jewish life isn’t the one my grandparents lived and I already know that my children’s Jewish lives will not be the same as mine. But the common thread through the generations has and will continue to be an education steeped in Jewish values and a family dynamic rich with Jewish identity. Change is inevitable and we as Jews shouldn’t fear what may come with future generations.

Instead, we should embrace and support it, recognizing that each generation will seek its own Jewish direction, identity, and ideas.

Through my work at the Academy, I am granted a unique perspective on the global Jewish community, geographically, culturally, and religiously. From our campus in Greensboro, where Jewish

students from 14 countries and 26 states have been brought together, to our recruitment outreach in ten countries around the globe, the Academy serves as an incubator for creative Jewish thinking and leadership, preparing students for that which we know will confront them as much as for that which we can’t even envisage.

Enrollment at Jewish schools in the U.S. is in steady decline, anti-Semitism in Europe is on the rise; the political climate in Russia and the former Soviet Union is troublesome, and a thriving Mexican Jewish community lives in fear of a criminal culture. Demand for Jewish education exceeds capacity in places like South Africa, England, and Australia, where families recognize that investing in Jewish education is the means to safeguard a Jewish future.

Irrefutable evidence of enrollment decline in non-traditional orthodox schools in America is clear, according to a study released by the Avi Chai Foundation this month: “The data presents the community with an enormous challenge,” writes Dr. Marvin Schick, who authored the study and poses the question, “Will Jewish schools continue to be a principal instrument for Judaic strengthening among those segments of American Jewish life for whom Jewish education is a critical determinant of young people’s future Judaic commitment?”

In 1996, Chico Sabbah z"l, founder of the American Hebrew Academy, predicted what we now know is true. His vision in building the Academy was to create a new model for Jewish education that would stem the tide of decline in America. A school that would appeal to “the new Jew in America” who was otherwise becoming complacent and apathetic to the infrastructure of the U.S. Jewish community of the past. In fact, based on a recent article by Professors Jack Wertheimer and Steven Cohen about Jewish life in America, they note, “No other major Western Jewish community displays such low levels of Jewish literacy or sends such a small proportion of its people on trips to Israel.”

The new Jew in America has much to learn about “the land of opportunity” our ancestors sought. And they have much to learn from their Jewish brethren around the world who still wish to make America their home. As the number of international students attending the Academy continues to rise despite the general downward enrollment trends at Jewish schools in America otherwise, we recognize that no different from generations past, we as an institution must evolve and adapt to a changing global Jewish community. By doing so, we can ensure a vibrant Jewish future, and one we predict will influence an entire generation of young Jewish Americans and a new wave of Jewish immigrants to America drawn by unique Jewish educational opportunities, only found at the Academy.

Alma Adams is Guest Speaker at Temple Emanuel’s MLK Shabbat Service Temple Emanuel’s annual Shabbat Service in honor of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. will take place on Friday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m. and will feature both moving words and inspirational music. This year’s guest speaker will be U.S. Representative Alma Adams. Adams won the 2014 special election in North Carolina's 12th congressional district to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mel Watt, thus becoming the 100th woman serving in the 113th Congress. The Bennett College Choir will be our special musical guests for the evening.

The purpose of this annual tradition

is not only to honor the memory of Dr. King, but also to reach out and facilitate dialogue with our African American neighbors. It is also a moment to highlight past cooperation during the Civil Rights era and to build for a better future. Members of the Jewish community are encouraged to invite African American friends and associates to attend this service. This service has always been an extraordinarily moving one. Please join us, together with your friends, on this historic occasion and be a positive force for increasing human understanding in our community.

Jeanne Fischer to Perform Concert at Temple Jeanne Fischer, daughter of Ellen and Gary Fischer, will perform a special concert at Temple Emanuel on Sunday, January 11 at 4:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the community. Jeanne is a senior lecturer at the University of Chapel Hill Department of Music, teaching studio voice and French and Italian diction. She has performed as a soloist throughout the U.S. and the United Kingdom, with groups such as the Smithsonian Chamber Players, The Bach Sinfonia, Ensemble Courant, the Washington Bach Consort, Princeton’s Dryden Ensemble, and the University of Maryland Symphony. Her recordings

include Bach’s Lutheran Masses with the Rochester-based early music ensemble, The Publick Musick, and the Magnolia Baroque Festival radio broadcasts of Moravian solo anthems. In the UK, she was selected to perform in the St. Martinin-the-Fields Outstanding Young Artists’ Series, the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, and the Dartington International Festival.

She is the recipient of several vocal prizes and awards, including First Place in the Voce Young Soloists Competition, the Royal Academy of Music’s Ethel Bilsland Award, and the Diploma of the Royal Academy of Music (DipRAM).

Brotherhood Sports Breakfast Join Temple Emanuel Brotherhood for their annual Sports Breakfast on Sunday, January 11 at 10:00 a.m., featuring guest speaker Dave Goren, the Executive Director of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association & Hall of Fame.

Dave started writing about sports for his hometown newspaper as a junior in high school. This led to a 24-year career as an award-winning television sportscaster, during which time the station at which he worked for 20+ years saw its weeknight news ratings improve to #1 in the market and stay there for seven years. Currently he is the head of a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that helps to

honor sportscasters and sportswriters (sports media) for excellence. Through networking and marketing, he is helping to grow the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters & Hall of Fame into a household name, while paying homage to the past and present, and mentoring the future of the industry.

Temple Emanuel's Mitzvah Day began 15 years ago by Rochelle and Stephen (z"l) Wolfe, in memory of their daughter Erica.

As a young teen, Erica believed in helping others and making the world a better place.

The goal of Mitzvah Day is to bring the entire congregation together for one day, centered on community service events in which individuals of all ages can participate.

Chanukah Party for the Chabad Friendship Circle

s Jews, we eagerly look forward to celebrating Chanukah every year.

Additionally, we recognize that, as one of the fundamental components of our faith is to be thankful and to give back, we are compelled to do just that during this holiday. It is in this spirit of responsibility that many teenagers enthusiastically volunteer for the Chabad Friendship Circle, an initiative dedicated to building bridges between teens and children with special needs.

Chabad hosted the Fifth Annual Chanukah Party for children with special needs on Sunday, December 14.

The volunteers and member-families celebrated the impact Chabad's Friendship Circle has had upon the lives of those it aims to serve, and enjoyed an afternoon of festivities, complete with a drum circle and a Dreidel tournament!
