HISTORY The Historic Magnolia House

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY Known as the birthplace of the sit-in movement, Greensboro’s place in African American — and U.S. — history is wellknown. But, African American history in Greensboro goes back to the Revolutionary War and continues to shape the Gate City today. The New Garden Woods, now known as the Guilford College Woods, were a known meeting place on the Underground Railroad where Levi and Vestal Coffin assisted runaways going to Indiana from 1819 to 1826. Within these woods remains a champion tulip poplar tree, over 300 years old, known as the Underground Railroad Tree. Today, you can navigate the trail as a simulation of how fugitives seeking freedom navigated the same woods. The trail leads to the tree standing as a silent witness to Underground Railroad activities on the land that served as a crossroad to freedom.

CHARLOTTE HAWKINS BROWN MUSEUM AT HISTORIC PALMER MEMORIAL INSTITUTE The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum interprets the life and work of Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, a prominent educator and advocate for social justice, and her school, Palmer Memorial Institute. THE HISTORIC MAGNOLIA HOUSE During America’s period of segregation, the Magnolia House Motel accommodated traveling African Americans who were not allowed to share the same facilities as Caucasians. The property was recognized as a highly recommended place to stay in six editions of The Green Book. The Magnolia House hosted many famous guests over the years including Ray Charles, Jackie Robinson, Ike and Tina Turner, Louis Armstrong, James Brown, and James Baldwin. Today, the Magnolia House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of very few Green Book sites to continue to operate within their historic context. FEBRUARY ONE MONUMENT A monument dedicated to the four NC A&T freshman who launched the lunch counter sit-in on Feb. 1, 1960 and all those who helped to support the movement. The sculptor of the monument, James Barnhill, was inspired by their courage to challenge the social injustice of Jim Crow laws and how the movement took hold and prevailed. David Caldwell served the community as a minister of Buffalo and Alamance Presbyterian churches, as a physician and as a popular political leader. The couple also founded an elite preparatory school for young men.

The air may be cold, but winter is a season to create warm memories.

Reflect on the important events of the past. Celebrate Black History Month by taking a tour of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum and learn how four courageous African-American freshmen from North Carolina A&T State University ignited the sit-in movement across the country in 1960. Afterward, visit the February One Monument on NC A&T campus to honor the bravery of the Greensboro Four. Come November, the winter holiday season offers a bounty of festive activities. Downtown Greensboro presents Downtown in December that features Holiday Balloons, decorated Christmas Trees and so much more. The Greensboro Science Center hosts Winter Wonderlights, an immersive walk-through light display.

Greensoboro Arboretum

Spring is one of the best times to be in the center of it all. Temperatures begin to rise and flowers bloom into bouquets of natural beauty, decorating the beautiful parks and gardens of Greensboro. Take in the colorful views at the Greensboro Arboretum to warm up for all the spring activities in the city. Take some time to unwind by hopping aboard the Brew Peddlers’ trolley to see what’s brewing downtown. Uncover stories from the Revolutionary War to modern times at the Greensboro History Museum. Have your own scavenger hunt and look for murals around the city as the weather warms up. Play at the Greensboro Children's Museum with the Neptune XXL Climber.

Summer sizzles with entertainment in Greensboro. Cool off at Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe featuring over 30 rides including the newest ride "Bombs Away" or crack open a cold one at the annual Summertime Brews Festival.

Discover and learn with the whole family at the Greensboro Science Center, a zoo, aquarium, and science museum all in one place! Elevate your adventure at the Science Center, literally, and take to the trees with SKYWILD, a one-of-a-kind treetop adventure park designed to imitate animal movements. Nothing says “summer” like ice cream and hot dogs.

Be sure to stop by for a scoop or two of homemade ice cream and an oldfashioned hot dog at Yum Yum Better Ice Cream and Hot Dogs, a family business operating in Greensboro since 1906. Celebrate the Fourth of July at the Annual Fun Fourth in Downtown Greensboro.

FALL

Greensboro Science Center

As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, there is no better time to “fall” in love with Greensboro than in autumn. Pardon the pun.

Kick off the season at the North Carolina Folk Festival, a free, threeday celebration of art, culture, and heritage. Take the whole family on a seasonal adventure at J. Razz and Tazz Farm for hayrides, corn mazes, and, of course, finding the perfect pumpkin in their pumpkin patch. Looking for some Halloween fun? Brave the Woods of Terror and replace any nightmares with sweet dreams by grabbing a slice of pumpkin cheesecake at Cheesecakes by Alex afterward. Wander along the elevated wooden boardwalk through 7 acres of natural wetlands at the Bog Garden and enjoy the stunning fall colors of the changing leaves. With 3 city lakes including Lake Brandt, kayak, fish and hike around as the season changes.
