President’s Message

It’s truly an honor to serve as president of our Association this year. Together with the Board of Directors, council and committee chairs…we are excited for the year ahead and the many initiatives that are being planned to support our members, Association and industry. As we annually review our mission, core values and vision statements… along with our areas of focus for the year...we want to ensure the programs and services we provide meet these objectives…as well as continue to explore new ideas and initiatives based on input from our members.

Member Engagement Having member participation is critical to our success along with growing our membership. There are so many industry partners that we all work with that are not members…many that are not familiar with our Association and all we offer. I encourage you to invite any builders, remodelers, trade contractors, suppliers and service providers that you work with to join our Association…simply share with them why you are a member and how they could benefit.

Our First Wednesday Member Connections provide an opportunity to meet other industry members in a casual setting…these continue to grow and provide valuable connections. If you haven’t attended one…make this one of your connecting points and invite a guest to attend with you.

Our annual awards meeting will be held April 8 featuring an Economic & Housing Forecast presented by Dr. Robert Dietz, NAHB Chief Economist. This is one meeting you don’t want to miss.

Throughout the year, there are numerous marketing and networking opportunities including educational programs, golf and sporting clay tournaments. Utilize our website and weekly Member News emails to stay abreast of upcoming events.

Workforce Development & Construction Careers Through our partnerships with educational and workforce development organizations…we are focusing on building greater awareness of careers in construction. Members are needed to participate in career fairs and visit classrooms to talk with students about career opportunities, as well as provide job-site visits, internships and mentoring opportunities. One of our goals is to increase the number of scholarships we provide through our Building for the Future Skilled Trades scholarships and training grants.

Leadership Development As we engage members in our programs and initiatives…we are building the future leadership for our Association. Our Young Professionals group recently celebrated 10 years since its formation. Our Association has benefited greatly from our Under 40 leaders with many serving in key leadership positions. We are excited to see this group continue to grow.

Community Engagement Giving back to the community has been an integral part of our Association for decades. This past year we provided funding and sponsored rebuilding trips to the Asheville area to assist with Hurricane Helene relief. Special thanks to our members and suppliers who donated labor and materials for these trips. We are looking to send teams back this year…as well as support other local community service initiatives. Let us know if this is an area of interest.

To be successful in achieving our goals this year…we need your participation. I would like to encourage you to find at least one place to connect whether that be attending a membership event or educational program…to sharing your experiences with students exploring careers in construction…to serving on one of our planning teams. Reach out if I can help you make that connection.

Hurricane Helene Rebuilding

Special thanks to our GBA members who participated in a rebuilding trip in the Spruce Pine area of western North Carolina in November 2025. Coordinating with Appalachian Service Project (ASP) our goal was to frame two houses in 3 ½ days including installing windows and doors so houses would be dried in before leaving.

Chaired by Jim Sandknop…our GBA team consisted of Brian Disney, Francis Disney, Mark Disney, John Hodgin, Kevin Lansink, Scott Lansink, Donnie Mills and Greg Seifert.

Special thanks to Builders FirstSource for donating one framing package and the GBA Benefit Trust for purchasing the other to support this effort as well as provide housing accommodations for GBA team members.

Our team arrived on Sunday and divided into two groups to install flooring systems for the houses. On Monday and Tuesday, volunteers joined team members to assist with building walls, roof system and installing windows and doors. In addition, front porches and steps were built.

ASP advised what our team did in three days would have taken them more than a month to accomplish. In an effort to support additional needs ASP had…Jim recruited the help of Marty Hedgecock, a licensed electrician and Tony Clayton, a licensed plumber along with fourteen volunteers from Guilford United Methodist Church. With the help of a few volunteers, a separate house was completely wired, while a bathroom was rough plumbed on a rehab house and a water heater and septic line were repaired on two other homes.

Interesting Tidbit: Spruce Pine area of Western NC which is known for its high-purity quartz crucial for industries that make semiconductors. It is also where Augusta National Golf Course gets white sand for their sand traps.

Team members shared one of the highlights of the trip was meeting the homeowners and hearing their stories…and more importantly giving them hope for the future.

One couple lost everything when the creek behind their house rose and destroyed all they owned. The other family’s home was on a hill away from the water but not the wind. Trees started falling on their house early in the morning and in fear they got out of the house and watched as trees destroyed their home.

Both homeowners now live in temporary trailers on their property. They were excited to see how much our team accomplished in a short timeframe and are hopeful to be in their new homes this spring.

The needs throughout western North Carolina are still great and work will continue for years from Helene’s destruction. Our hope is to continue to provide support this fall with even more members participating.
