hank goodness spring has finally sprung! The temperatures are rising and so are new home sales and starts. We are seeing positive trends in almost every aspect of our industry whether that involves new home construction or remodeling existing spaces. Our Consumer Confidence Index is the highest it has been since 2001 which will translate into a continued robust construction economy for all of us in 2017.

So in such a vibrant economy what would motivate a construction professional to join the Greensboro Builders Association (GBA)? After all, if you have plenty of work, why do you need an organization that primarily revolves around networking?

Please take a minute to follow me as I debunk this myth. Yes, with more than 650 members, the GBA is an excellent organization in which to network; however, there are so many more golden opportunities available to a GBA member. In some cases, the opportunities are better than golden, they’re green – as in green dollars going back into your bank account!

Builders & Remodelers…did you know that as a member of the GBA you have access to the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA) Member Rebate Program? Did you also know that currently there are more than 50 of the country’s leading manufacturer brands participating in the Member Rebate Program and that the average rebate per Builder/Remodeler is $1,178.12 per year? Oh, but I can hear the naysayers now, “Anything that good must take a lot of time and effort.” Not true. It takes less than one hour per quarter to submit your rebate form electronically. If your curiosity has been piqued, take a few minutes to look at our rebate program at www.hbarebates.com. Watch for an upcoming Builder Roundtable to provide an overview on how to get started. Also, all members can take advantage of discounts and savings through the NAHB Member Advantage program.

There are numerous events going on this spring within our Association and we encourage you to get involved. We are continuing to move forward with our Workforce Planning – Construction Careers Initiative, meeting with industry professionals as well as professionals in the education realm to identify the current needs in our industry regarding labor shortages and how to begin to address those needs. Join us for our next meeting on May 11. Each of our Councils will be providing quarterly educational programs and/or networking events which are open for all to attend.

In closing, I would like to thank to Kevin Otey and our Skeet Committee for a very successful Skeet Tournament held at Shane’s Sporting Clays on April 6. We were able to award several prizes including two nice Yeti coolers. A great time was had by all, even in the wind!

I would also like to thank our Parade Committee as they gear up for our Spring Parade of Homes. Come out and join us on April 29-30 & May 6-7…and don’t miss our Parade Celebration on Wednesday, May 10 at Revolution Mill Events Center.

t’s the Spring Parade of Homes...a great opportunity for builders, designers and suppliers to showcase features as well as benefits of newlyconstructed homes. The Spring Parade of Homes will be held on Saturday & Sunday, April 29-30 & May 6-7. More than 75 newly constructed homes will be on tour throughout Guilford and Forsyth counties for two consecutive weekends as part of our regional Triad Parade of Homes. Homes will be open from 1 – 5 pm each day. Admission is FREE.

Help Promote the Parade Join us in promoting the Spring Parade of Homes…by placing Parade magazines in your offices and showrooms; placing information on your website and/or social media pages.

Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat Interested in learning more about participating in this year’s Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat build…join us for an information session on May 17 at 4:00 pm at the GBA office. Plans are to construct 5 homes the week of October 30 – November 3…bringing our total to 60 homes built by GBA members since forming our partnership with Habitat Greensboro in 2003.

Tour of Remodeled Homes Celebrating our 20th anniversary… the Tour of Remodeled Homes will be held Saturday & Sunday, August 5-6 providing an opportunity to showcase the very best in professional remodeling including complete home renovations, kitchens, baths, additions, outdoor living and more!

Construction Careers Are Labor Shortages Impacting Your Business?

As the housing and remodeling industry continues to rebound, labor challenges remain a top concern for many of our members.

Delays in construction are becoming more common due to the high demand for skilled labor within our market.

GBA members met last month Task Force Meeting: forming an industry task force to focus on workforce development Thursday, May 11 initiatives and what we might as 4:00 - 5:30 pm an industry do to help address GBA office current labor shortages. Anyone that would like to join in these discussions is invited to join us for our next meeting on Thursday, May 11 from 4:00 – 5:30 pm at the GBA office.

One of the greatest challenges we face nationwide is increasing the interest and awareness of construction jobs as a career path.

Many feel we have to start by changing perceptions and attitudes among parents, students, guidance counselors and educators regarding the construction industry. Developing marketing and communications strategies that share the opportunities and growth needs within the construction field may be a good starting point.

In addition as we find interested students and adults looking for employment within the industry, we need to build a framework for easy entry into the field. One suggestion has been to develop a job listing service on the GBA website and promote that within the schools and community. This would also be a benefit to our members as they can post positions and opportunities they have available.

Over the next few months, we are in the process of meeting with organizations and educators to learn more about their current initiatives and ways members of the Greensboro Builders Association might be engaged to assist with current programs and/or new initiatives. This includes meeting with both educators and guidance counselors with the Guilford County Schools, the construction trades instructors at GTCC; continuing to serve on the Construction Apprenticeship task force with the Community Foundation; and working with Junior Achievement in both the middle and high schools. We also have members participating with NC Skills USA (April 27 in Greensboro) and serving on the NCHBA Construction Careers committee.

ongratulations to the following GBA members recognized for their contributions to the Association, the community and the building industry at our 2016 Annual Awards presentation on February 23.

Associate Member of the Year Char-Lee Smith, McLean Mortgage was awarded the 2016 Associate Member of the Year Award. Char-Lee has been involved in our Association and the mortgage industry for more than 30 years. For the past two years, she has chaired our Membership Committee, and currently serves as an Associate Director on the GBA Board of Directors.

Eugene Gulledge Award The Eugene Gulledge Award for Distinguished Service is the highest honor given by the Builders Association. It is named in honor of Eugene Gulledge who founded the Greensboro Builders Association sixty years ago. This award recognizes continuous, outstanding contributions to the Builders Association and the community at large over a long period of time.

Kavanagh Cup Since 1995, GBA has presented the Kavanagh Cup award recognizing individuals and/ or organizations for their efforts in strengthening affordable housing in Guilford County. The 2016 Kavanagh Cup was presented to Phil Barbee, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro for his work over the years to help improve affordable housing in our community.

Jim Sandknop, Community Housing Solutions was awarded the 2016 Gulledge Award. Having been involved in the building industry for the past 30 years, Jim has served in a variety of leadership positions, including GBA President in 2014 and continues to serve our Association as an Ambassador and active committee member. Jim is highly regarded by his peers for his giving spirit, serving those in need within our community and beyond.

Builder Member of the Year Joan Swift, SwiftCreek Construction was awarded the 2016 Builder Member of the Year Award. Joan has served on the GBA Board of Directors for several years in a variety of roles.

She has been an active member of the Triad Green Building Council, Builders Council, NCHBA, TREBIC and has served as a Raising Roofs builder.

Joan is an advocate for continuing education, holding numerous national and state designations including GMB; CGP; CAPS; CSP; ABR; GRI; and many more. Joan also is an active Realtor, currently serving this year as president of the High Point Regional Association of Realtors.
