A MESSAGE FROM MASTER BUILDERS VICTORIA’S PRESIDENT
Steven Peluso Dear readers, here is far more to a great home than the finished photographs reveal. As a builder, I know the work behind those images. Every project involves decisions, problems solved on site and details deserving time and attention. Whether a new home, a major renovation or an alteration, each brings its own challenges. Looking through this year’s winners, special commendations and finalists, what stands out to me is the standard of workmanship across such a diverse range of projects. Building with excellence takes experience and judgement. Skilled people taking responsibility for their work, coordinating with others and following through on the details make the difference. Those qualities are reflected throughout the projects recognised in these pages. The finished home also represents months, sometimes years, of effort. Behind each result are builders, trades, designers, suppliers and teams who have managed changes, worked through challenges and earned their clients’ trust.
T
This is why recognition through the Excellence in Housing Awards means so much. These awards celebrate the quality of the homes delivered and the people whose work made them possible. To everyone recognised this year, through an award, a special commendation or a place among the finalists, you should be proud. Your work is a credit to your businesses and the people you work alongside every day. Serving as President of Master Builders Victoria is a privilege. Seeing the skill and commitment represented in this magazine makes me proud to be a builder and to represent our members. Congratulations. You have earned this recognition. Warm regards,
STEVEN PELUSO

He received invitations to guest lecture at a number of universities on sustainable building and developed training programs for energy efficient construction. righton House is an exceptional example of heritage restoration meeting contemporary craftsmanship at the highest level. Beyond its restored wrought-iron gates and richly landscaped grounds, the 1870s mansion stands with remarkable dignity, its original façade meticulously retained and reinstated, while every heritage detail, from slate roofing to timber windows, has been carefully revived rather than replaced. The project combines sensitive restoration with an ambitious modern extension and a highly complex subterranean build. Beneath the home lies a 10-car basement complete with wellness, recreation and storage spaces, seamlessly connected to the original structure through sophisticated engineering and concealed services. Throughout the residence, heritage character is respectfully balanced with contemporary living, where ornate detailing sits alongside integrated modern conveniences. ark Semmens always liked design, technical drawing, business and building things. He was heavily influenced by his father who is a civil engineer. In 2010, Mark obtained a Bachelor of Environments (Construction Management) from the University of Melbourne. In 2017 he obtained a Certificate III in OH&S from MBV. Mark Semmens has 19 years of experience in the building and construction industry, one year with Verve Constructions, 15 years with Figurehead Group and the last three years starting his own building firm know as M+A Group. He started at Figurehead as a junior and grew with the business from Project Coordinator/Contract Administrator/Site Supervisor to Project Manager and eventually General Manager. He was also directly involved in the company’s HR, IR and marketing. He grew the business to a significant annual turnover. During his time at Figurehead Group, he also established a separate branch of the company, that is Flux Constructions, a group that focused on high-end and architecturally focused projects. Since starting M+A Group, Mark has grown the business where he now employs a project manager, a site manager, two supervisors, a full-time carpenter and an office accounts person. He has built four, four storey townhouses in East Malvern and a commercial office in Albert Park. He believes quality starts at the design and drawing stage of a project. It is through client referrals, architects and developers that he wins projects. He believes in being honest, up front, transparent and always having open communications even when there is bad news – “be realistic with expectations”. Mark Semmens is an intelligent, confident and a well-spoken young builder with a sound business acumen. F
AWK 1&2 presents a pair of architecturally striking coastal residences that seamlessly unite structural innovation with refined design. Set within the challenging dune landscape of the Mornington Peninsula, the homes were meticulously crafted using advanced concrete wall systems, suspended slab construction and complex basement engineering. Rich material palettes of travertine, Venetian plaster, limewash finishes and bespoke joinery bring warmth and sophistication to the contemporary architecture. Each residence responds uniquely to its coastal setting, from elevated living spaces and rooftop entertaining terraces to dramatic architectural detailing and carefully curated interiors. The second home further pushes the boundaries of residential construction with a remarkable elevated negative-edge pool featuring a glass wall and base. Together, these homes embody exceptional craftsmanship, technical precision and considered design, delivering enduring coastal retreats that are as visually compelling as they are structurally sophisticated.

DAVID NEWNHAM
Managing Director Mazzei Group Director Building & Construction Foundation (Registered Charity) Committee Member MBA Diploma of Building and Construction
Bachelor of Civil Engineering, Monash University MBV Board of Management; President from 2008 to 2010 Building Practitioners Board (2000- 2008); Co-opted member until the Board was disbanded in 2016.
Daniel is the founder and Managing Director of Mazzei Group, a Melbourne construction company launched in 2016 spanning luxury custom homes, multi-dwelling residential projects, social and specialist disability housing and remedial building works. A carpenter by trade with almost thirty years in the industry, he has grown the Mazzei Group into a diversified organisation delivering projects across both the private and government sectors, with a reputation for design understanding, disciplined delivery and an exacting commitment to quality. Daniel’s career has covered every stage of residential construction. After completing a four-year apprenticeship renovating existing homes, he ran his own carpentry business before cofounding Better Living Group where he over saw project site management of multi-unit developments and large-scale custom residential builds. He is also the co-founder of the Mazzei Foundation, the Mazzei Group’s charitable arm focused on building crisis and affordable housing for vulnerable women and children. This breadth of experience underpins Daniel’s approach to judging: a detailed understanding of construction quality, buildability and design resolution, a practical eye for the coordination behind complex projects, and a genuine enthusiasm for seeing quality craftsmanship recognised.
MASTER BUILDERS VICTORIA EXCELLENCE IN HOUSING AWARDS 2026
David has been involved in the building and construction industry since completing a Degree in Civil Engineering at Monash University in 1971. After over 20 years in project management in commercial building with projects including the Reserve Bank Note Printing Works at Craigieburn and the Melbourne Central Project, he moved to residential building as Victorian Building Manager for AVJennings in 1992. In 1997 he joined with two other partners for a management buyout of Stonehaven Homes where he remained until his retirement in 2016. Stonehaven Homes is an architectural design and construction company involved in inner suburban residential housing. David’s involvement with Master Builders extends back to receiving industrial advice in the late 1970s. His main involvement occurred when he joined the housing sector committee in 1992. He was elected chairman soon thereafter and served on the state council from that time. Following eight years on the Board of Management he became President from 2008 to 2010. David served for eight years on the Building Practitioners Board from 2000 to 2008 and continued as a co-opted member until the Board was disbanded in 2016. He has served on the CoINVEST (building industry long service leave fund) board since being elected in 2011. David has enjoyed his time in the building industry and joined the Victorian Small Business Mentoring Service in 2017 as a volunteer to share his experience with others.
