lmaguin…where fresh, clean air blows across wide open spaces and pristine waterways, while deep, lush forests hold

profound silence, where we can hear our own thoughts. Our skies are so expansive it seems as though we can see all the way to the very edge of the earth. Our friends and neighbours, the kind that bake bread and keep watch over our kids, unite to build strong communities connected by dirt roads and highways appearing to sneak through the woods. Those of us who have grown up here feel lucky, while those of us who have landed here feel as though we’ve discovered a secret.

This is our 2020 Almaguin Highlands Community Guide, and we couldn’t be happier to put it in your hands. The truth is we just didn’t know if we could do it. This will be our sixth anniversary edition, which on its own is remarkable, but producing it during this historically difficult year… well we think it’s even more remarkable!

We thought long and hard about how to make it all happen again this year. We hosted Zoom meetings, called out to our Chamber members and our dedicated advertisers, offered as much support as possible, helped develop programs to make life and business just a little easier in a time when nothing was easy. What we discovered throughout this process was that our community, our businesses, and our neighbours think of Almaguin as a haven; rather than feeling despair, we all shared a positive energy as we looked to our future. We’re a diverse and hardworking community full of business owners, teachers, front line workers, caretakers, and families. As a Chamber we’ve come to understand what this magazine represents to us all: hope, growth, success, adventure, connection and tourism. Ultimately, none of us could imagine a year without this Community Guide!

Louise Dawney, a real estate agent, tells the story of a couple making Almaguin their home after years of living in the city. Joanne Collins, who you may remember from last year’s edition (and our 2020 editor), weaves together

ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

e follow many paths in our lifetime. Down the aisle, we follow

our mate, across the graduation stage, we follow our dreams, along the long hallway to our job interview, we follow our hopes, on our journey throughout life, we pick up hobbies and follow our heart.

Nine years ago, I changed my career path and became a Realtor.

In choosing this direction, I

couldn’t have imagined the lasting

and meaningful relationships I would develop along the way. Lee Johanson and Linda Somers were my first ever clients, and their path led them to Almaguin, and a cherished friendship. This is their story.

Lee and Linda built their lives in Toronto, and enjoyed their cottage on Gibson Lake in the Parry Sound area. Originally it was just a summer retreat, but eventually they decided to spend more time at the cottage, so they renovated. They dreamed of living a life where they could reduce their environmental footprint, and their cottage provided a place to begin this new lifestyle.

Spending more time up north, they explored the area more fully to discover all the hidden gems and must-see locations this area has to offer. They took canoe trips to Algonquin Park and day trips to Almaguin, North Bay and Muskoka, somehow always finding the time to pop into the little antique shops they saw along the way. They loved their outings and these became part of their daily lives. Little did they know that these excursions were steps in their path that would eventually lead them to their new home. An integral part of their new, more sustainable lifestyle was producing maple syrup and this quickly became a passion for Lee and Linda. However, trudging on foot or by snowshoe to Crown Land while pulling a sleigh with supplies to tap and collect, and then hauling it back down the trail loaded with sap was a grueling way to accomplish this otherwise fun and fulfilling task.

search for a home with enough property to grow a garden, enough timber to perhaps one day mill their own logs, and of course enough maple trees to make syrup. Their path led them to Almaguin where the abundance of hardwood forests supply many small and large producers of maple syrup, and where they could enjoy paddling the multitude of lakes and rivers conveniently situated in their own backyard. They followed their heart, and this is where it took them.

When Lee and Linda eventually set their eyes on a home in Strong Township with nearly 40 acres of maple bush, it was a done deal! This was a place where they could set their plan in motion and start fulfilling their dreams, which is exactly what they’ve done. Taking huge strides towards sustainability, they now produce their own maple syrup, have expanded their gardens to include raised beds, have planted fruit trees, and are picking wild berries. For developing their healthy lifestyle that maintains an ecological balance, they found Almaguin to be the perfect area. Not only have local farmers from Magnetawan to Powassan provided them with lamb, eggs, fish and produce galore, but they cherish friendly neighbours who are always willing to share their expertise on how to live comfortably in our great near north.

Since life isn’t all about work, this couple also acquired some acreage on the Distress River where they can canoe and immerse themselves in nature.

Linda says that until they moved to Almaguin, they were always looking back at Toronto...because it was home. In the big city, they knew where to find all the best coffee shops, art galleries, and independent grocers; however, now they rarely go to the city and have never looked back. Although they were attracted to this area for the natural environment it offered, once here they discovered a rich culture in Almaguin to embrace. They’ve put down their roots here and love it.

Some paths are paved and travel through city parks, some are paths are muddy and traverse through deep green forests; all of the journeys we choose in life take us on a path from somewhere to something and sometimes to someone. My career path as a realtor has intersected with many wonderful people like Lee and Linda whose wanderings took them from the hustle of Toronto to a quiet lifestyle in the Almaguin Highlands. Birders, like Stephen O’Donnell, have satisfaction guaranteed in finding their prey. “There have been 265 species of birds seen in the Almaguin area,” Stephen told me when I visited his home on the shores of Lake Bernard.

“It is safe to say that one could reasonably see about 220 species of birds in this area during a calendar year.” Stephen O’Donnell knows birds. He has been birdwatching since the age of seven, has collaborated on 2 editions of Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario and is part of the team working on the third. Working in the great outdoors for most of his life, O’Donnell has been free to pursue his love of birdwatching to the fullest degree. Making Almaguin his home for over 30 years, he has been living the dream of many birders; a place on the edge of a lake, with a bit of a clearing and forest surrounding him, his property covers several habitats and his yard list (birds he has seen from his property) has reached 209. Stephen is eager to share

Looking back from whence we came while moving forward to where we’re going

I

don’t have to look too far back to remember the village I grew up in and to realize how very different it has

become. I remember streets lined with cars. I remember my difficulty in deciding which of the 7 restaurants in town I wanted my parents to take me to on a Friday night. I remember the excitement of playing ball in the remarkably competitive local baseball league. I remember spending the whole car ride to town trying to decide in which store I was going to spend my highly coveted birthday money. I remember meeting my father up at the factory after summer camp and waiting patiently in the lunchroom for his shift to finish so that we could spend a fun evening together. Main streets in the Almaguin region were busy, happening places with flourishing businesses, and it was a real treat to go to town.

I remember going away to college and trying to explain to ‘those city kids’ why I wouldn’t trade my small-town upbringing for anything that the ‘big city’ could provide. For nearly 10 years I had many such conversations. I eventually realized that I was sick of talking about it and that it was time to move home. When I finally made that move, I was surprised to find myself in a very different place than I remembered leaving. Was it me? Was my memory simply a reflection of a youthful perspective filled with a propensity to find the best in everything?

The truth is that many small rural areas across the province and country have experienced similar transitions over the last couple of decades leaving residents wondering what has happened to their busy little communities. In some regions this phenomena was explained by a mine closing up, a factory shut-down, or some other major economic loss to the community. Some say it’s that children are no longer interested in taking over the family farm or business and therefore move on to greener pastures to seek their fortune. Others claim that the internet showed small town kids that the world was at their fingertips and swept them away in search of adventure; maybe it was a little bit of all of those and other things. The fact remains that although much has changed in our beloved rural communities, we still maintain our pride of place and work hard to find our way back to economic stability.

For the last seven years, I have had the good fortune of working in the Almaguin Region as an economic developer. I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of local champions, go-getter business owners, and enthusiastic community volunteers. These relationships represent the foundational elements of why I remain passionate about the qualities of small town living to this day. Just below the surface of what some may perceive to be struggling communities, I have found a veritable army of individuals who work tirelessly to move the needle forward in their communities, businesses, and personal lives. This sentiment is resonated in the recently formed Almaguin Community Economic Development (ACED) Board and Department. ACED finds its strength in overlooking restrictive municipal boundaries and focusing on growing the entire region together. The 11 ACED Partners, which includes municipalities and the Almaguin Highlands Chamber of Commerce, are committed to combining efforts and resources to take on the larger projects and issues our region needs as a team rather than facing these tasks as individual towns.

Now if you ask ten people what they define as economic development, you’re liable to get ten different answers.

If you further ask them what types of activities should be involved, the responses will likely be even more skewed.

Some people naturally want to associate

economic development with attracting the next car manufacturing plant or dropping a Walmart on the outskirts of town and effectively putting small town retailers at risk. I have learned first-hand that economic development is as much about attracting compatible growth as it is about job creation or improved quality of life. Compatible growth and job creation means working with businesses to help them reach higher heights or attracting new businesses that complement the existing mix. It also means having desirable services such as accessible broadband internet. Economic development can also play a role in encouraging a lifecycle housing development and helping to find creative ways to overcome transportation barriers. Truthfully, there are many factors that impact our economy and ACED aims to keep a weathered eye on the horizon.

Growing up in Almaguin, I learned first-hand that it takes a village to raise a child (or a family). In my current role within ACED, I am learning that it takes a region to raise a village.

I am encouraged that as a region, we are

standing for growth and prosperity as Many Villages with One Voice.

originally come from Niagara where the winters are short, and opportunities for outdoor sports include a cold bike ride or a brisk

hike. Moving to the Almaguin Highlands, I knew it would be important to embrace the white stuff and find a passion to help me enjoy the long winter months. I’ve never been much of a downhill skier, but from the first moment I tried on cross-country skis, I was hooked.

This got me out in the fresh air, and while gliding swiftly across the crisp snow down winter wonderland trails, I rejoiced in the ability to do something that I love all winter long.

There are many reasons why cross-country skiing is a good activity for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors in Almaguin during the winter months. Let’s start with exercise, although to be honest, you will be having so much fun that you’ll forget about the fitness part. In comparison to other high-intensity sports, cross-country skiing comes in as one of the highest caloric burners consuming 1,122 calories per hour of vigorous skiing. Just to put this into perspective, other fitness activities such as boxing or biking will burn between 680-816 calories per hour, depending on bodyweight. This activity is a win-win situation; it feels great to get outside while at the same time getting a full-body workout, gaining muscle strength, and having a blast!

Let’s face it, life gets stressful. We’ve got a lot on our plates in this day and age, and everyone needs a stress reliever or a break away from it all from time to time. Escaping to the forest or lake for a ski provides therapeutic thinking time. The peace and tranquility that comes with being outside in nature helps leave your stress behind and gives you a renewed sense of calm so that you return home feeling refreshed in so many ways. Cross-country skiing is also a perfect way to connect with friends and loved ones while getting active. This is one sport that everyone, at any age, no matter what level of fitness, can enjoy. Requiring only a modest amount of equipment, it does not have to be an expensive sport.

Algonquin Provincial Park

Checkerboard Park

Algonquin, the first provincial park in Ontario, protects a variety of natural, cultural, and recreational features. As one of the largest provincial parks, Algonquin is diverse and offers something for nearly everyone. The Almaguin Highlands offers access to the ‘back country’ of Algonquin Park. These access points cater to the more experienced outdoor adventurists.

Location: 1014 Ferguson Rd, Katrine Have a perfect family day on Doe Lake! Complete with a paved boat launch, public beach, washroom building equipped with a wheelchair ramp, beach volleyball area, basketball pad and net, swings, and playground equipment.

Brook’s Falls Park Location: 690 Deer Lake Rd, Emsdale Brook’s Falls is a great place to escape into nature. Sit and relax by the falls, tour the grounds and don’t forget to bring your picnic lunch! Brook’s Falls is an area favourite for visitors and sure to give a great outdoors experience for all ages!

Burk’s Falls Community Park & Playground

Doe Lake Park (McMurrich/Monteith) Location: On Birch Crt off Almaguin Dr, Sprucedale This location offer all of the amenities needed for a great day on the lake. Go for a swim on the sandy beach, or have a picnic.

Washrooms are available on site. Launch your boat at the nearby boat launch located at 157 Almaguin Drive.

Emsdale Community Park Location: 29 Joseph St, Emsdale The Emsdale Community Park offers a playground area, baseball diamond and ice rink. Located beside the public library and community centre, the park is a great choice for a relaxing day outside.

High Rock Lookout Park & Trails

Location: Houston St. (Behind Health Centre), Burk’s Falls A great spot for the kids to have fun complete with a playground, shaded picnic area, portable bathroom and badminton net.

Location: 843 High Rock Rd, Sundridge Be sure to visit High Rock Lookout Park for one of the most spectacular overviews of Lake Bernard; tour the adjacent walking trail to enjoy the lake and grounds. Also features a covered picnic area, open picnic areas and benches.

Burk’s Falls Skateboard Park Location: Burk’s Falls Fairgrounds 220 Centre St, Burk’s Falls Offering a variety of features for BMX and skateboarding on a paved surface. Please note that all safety equipment must be worn as this is an unsupervised area.

Offers a playground and public washrooms. Also features a paved boat launch at the docks and access to Ahmic Lake via the Magnetawan Locks.

Mikisew Provincial Park Location: 301 Park Rd South, South River Mikisew is the perfect family camping destination. The park offers private sunny campsites in two campgrounds, near the shores of Eagle Lake. Tent, trailer and RV campsites are available with or without electricity, on a good variety of campsites, in both campgrounds. The Park is open from May to September annually. Pickerel Lake Park Location: 180 Kent Rd, Armour Township Offers public access to Pickerel Lake via a natural, sand and gravel boat launch and beach. Picnic area and public washroom are on site. Pickerel Lake Park is perfect for a day trip and picnic away from the crowds.

Powassan Lions Park Location: Behind the Powassan Sportsplex 433 Main St, Powassan This park is a perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. Offers beautiful flower gardens created by the Powassan Horticultural Society. Benches and gazebo available.

Powassan Memorial Park Location: Corner of Main St. & Memorial Park Dr., East Need a place to have a friendly gathering? We have beautiful flower gardens created by the Horticultural Society. On the warm days there are shady areas with benches for you to relax. Planning to have some entertainment at the gathering?

Highland Trails: The Pines

Rainy Lake Beach and Park Location: 636 Old Rainy Lake Rd, Burk’s Falls A great location for a day in the sun on Rainy (Bartlett) Lake.

Offers a picnic area, washroom and beach. Sand and gravel boat launch available with free parking.

Location: End of Catherine Ave, Powassan The Pines, including some of the favourite trails in this area, lead up to Powassan Mountain, one of this town’s great natural attractions. A hike to the top of the mountain offers visitors a spectacular view of the surrounding highlands. A trip along the many back country roads in this area will lead you to discover antique treasures, artists, and craft studios.

Lake Bernard Trail

Location: Pickerel & Jack Lake Rd., Burk’s Falls Formerly known as Thompson Rapids. Relax and cool off in the Magnetawan River. Offers great scenery, swimming and picnic areas.

Locations: Lakeshore Dr, South Bernard Lake Rd, High Rock Dr, Sundridge Experience natural beauty on the Lake Bernard Trail. This biking trail is comprised of rural road sections and offers a moderate to challenging ride. Some sections are paved where others are gravel.

Location: 7 Glendale Heights Dr, Powassan Perfect place to play a game of soccer, or host a family event in the community centre hall available for rental.

Location: 62 Big Bend Ave, Powassan Formerly known as the Highland Trail, The Pines is a series of interlocking loops, spanning 4.26km in the Town of Powassan.

Starting to the side of the Eastholme Retirement home, the trail winds through a red pine forest that was planted in the 1930s. Interpretative stations are located at various points along the trail which detail the ecology and history of the area. Maintained by the Municipality of Powassan, The Pines is owned by a cooperative of private landowners.

Richard Thomas Memorial Park

Sundridge Lion’s Park and Splash Pad Location: 91 Water St, Sundridge On-site is a playground, washroom, large pavilion, boat launch, docks and parking. The newly installed splash pad was installed in memory of Stacey Stillar (Sullivan).

Seguin Recreational Trail (Trans Canada) Location: Perry Township, McMurrich/Monteith Township Enjoy walking/hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling. Motorized vehicles are permitted on the trail. Visit www.tctrail.ca to map your route!

Stan Darling Memorial Park Location: Yonge and Ontario St, Burk’s Falls Also known as the Village Green, Stan Darling Park is a great spot to relax and take in some of our history. Enjoy the shade in the covered picnic area, learn about local celebrity Pete the Bear and remember our Veterans at the captured WW1 machine gun.

Sprucedale Recreational Trail Location: 31 William St, Sprucedale The trail is approximately 2km and begins on a boardwalk that stretches across a solitary beaver pond and then proceeds into a forest where you will come across broad maples and high ridges. You may encounter deer, moose or beaver and all around you, there will be signs of their activity.

Burk’s Falls Heritage River Walk Location: Burk’s Falls Information Center Ryerson Cres. Burk’s Falls The Heritage River Walk stretches from the footbridge below the dam to the racetrack at the arena grounds. With the Magnetawan River on one side, and lush forest on the other, it is the perfect place for walking, picnicking, and sightseeing.

Forgotten Trails Location: Multiple Locations The Forgotten Trails Association creates, maintains and promotes safe and ecologically sustainable trails of natural or historical significance in the South River area. These fourseason back-country trails are managed for the purpose of nonmotorized recreational trail activities. Magnetawan Municipal Trails Location: Biddy St (at the Locks), Magnetawan There are so many sights to see on this short, 3km hiking trail.

View sections of Ahmic Lake and Lake Cecebe as they are connected by the Mighty Magnetawan River. The trails connect the Magnetawan Community Park, Village Locks and Historic Downtown Magnetawan.

Park to Park Trail Location: Access off of 1695 Emsdale Rd, Emsdale The Park to Park Trail stretches from Algonquin Provincial Park to Killbear Provincial Park. This trail system has a total distance of over 230km and welcomes both motorized and nonmotorized travel. This trail is a four season trail offering access to snowmobiles in the winter.

horse, ATV) Access: Various (Seguin Falls to Commanda) This historic colonization road nicknamed ‘Ontario’s Ghost Road’ is part of the Trans Canada Trail. While the north end and mid-section around the community of Magnetawan continue to be used and maintained as a travelled road, the north end of the road is slowly being reclaimed by nature.

(hike, mountain bike, snowshoe) Access: North Meadow Cove Road, Dunchurch The trail weaves through a diverse mixed forest with towering hemlock and oak trees.

- 3 km loop (hike, ski, snowshoe) Access: Golf Course Road, Magnetawan This trail is located at the Ahmic Lake Golf Course and Broadmeadows Wildlife Area.

snowshoe) Access: 4195 Highway 520, Magnetawan The footpath crosses the provincial lift locks over the Magnetawan River and leads to a small island chain that stretches across the water.

From excellent trails and mountain biking to fantastic road riding, cyclists in the region will enjoy the spectacularly scenic landscapes through lush forests with frequent glimpses of picturesque lakes and meandering rivers. Several of the villages of Almaguin have outdoor bike fix stations and route maps to support cyclists. Almaguin in Motion, the local cycling club, welcomes riders to join in group rides through their Facebook page. Gerry proudly carries on the family tradition following another of his grandfather’s mottos “we don’t just build them pretty, we build them pretty good.” While visiting Giesler Marine, I asked Gerry what makes his boats so special.

“Wood boats have a feel and ride on the water that aluminum and fibreglass boats do not have.” I learned that although the price and weight of cedar strip boats compare to aluminum, they are ½ the weight of fiberglass. I wondered about the maintenance of wood compared to metal boats and was surprised to discover that although they take more work than aluminum, they are no harder to care for than fiberglass. It is a question of whether you’d rather clean and wax, or varnish. Giesler Boats has a website that details exactly how to maintain the beautiful sheen of their boats to ensure that your neighbour’s eyeballs will be following them as they slice through the water. One benefit of this boat, according to Gerry, is “wood has the best strength to weight ratio of any material. They are also much easier to repair than aluminum and fibreglass.”

Not much has changed about these boats since Barney first began to build them. “We have added some extra supports and bracing,” Gerry says, “we are also using stainless steel screws and bolts.” Motors today are bigger and heavier so the modern Giesler boat has accommodated for this and most current models are deeper than the originals.

Using cedar planking, oak ribs, copper nails, and pine for the seats, it takes on average about 70 to 100 man hours to build one of these boats, depending of course on the size. A small business, which offers repairs as well as new construction, with only 5 craftsmen besides Gerry working, means they can build approximately 50 boats per year, some of which will find their way to Fly in Fishing Camps each year. Giesler Boats can produce 17 different models that include canoes and rowboats and can modify these to suit your size requirements and unique needs.

Are there any changes in store for this business that has been successful for over a century? Gerry thinks not. Well, how can perfection be improved?

This family business will continue to make cottage neighbours envious for years to come as Matt, Gerry’s nephew and great-grandson of Barney, hopes to take the business over someday. According to a bill of sale still in Gerry’s possession, Barney began his boat building industry in 1927.
