Der Erfolg der zwei Frauen kommt nicht von ungefähr. Sandra brachte 20 Jahre Einzelhandelserfahrung mit, machte aus einem kleinen Sportgeschäft der Eltern De Skihut, mit 3000m2 heute eines der grössten und renommiertesten Sportgeschäfte Hollands und gleichzeitig einer der wichtigsten Kunden von Goldbergh. Lieke war leitende Designerin der Stonefashion-Gruppe. Während ihrer gesamten kreativen Laufbahn wusste sie immer neue Ansätze zu finden und ihre Leidenschaft für Sport mit ihrem enormen stilistischen Anspruch zu verbinden. Sandra: «Aus Designersicht fehlte es an modischen Sport-/Skimarken für Frauen. Die meiste Sportbekleidung für Frauen war eher praktisch und nicht wirklich schmeichelhaft.

Goldbergh verspricht Luxus und Qualität, aber auch Persönlichkeit. Die GoldberghFrau hat ein Funkeln in den Augen, sie hat keine Angst, Risiken einzugehen. Wir verstehen, wie Frauen über ihren Körper denken, weil wir selbst Frauen sind.» Lieke ergänzt: «Goldbergh zelebriert die Unabhängigkeit und das Frausein. Jede Frau sollte das Selbstvertrauen haben, sich ab und zu off-piste zu bewegen. Es ist wichtig, das zu tun, was man will. Man muss in der Lage sein, sich selbst auszudrücken. The two founders of Goldbergh, Lieke van den Berg and Sandra Peet, exude real female power. They are the epitome of a perfectly harmonised duo that rarely exists in winter sports, which is usually a male-dominated industry. In 2010 they founded a luxury sports and ski brand for the active, yet fashionable woman. It is now sold in over 600 stores in 35 countries and has developed into an exclusive and independent brand.

But the successful story of the two women is certainly no coincidence.

Sandra has 20 years of extensive retail experience, turning her parents' sports shop, De Skihut, into the largest and most renowned sports shops in The Netherlands which is at the same time one of Goldbergh's biggest customers.

Lieke is designer and already had her own ski clothing brand, that forms the foundation of Goldbergh's aesthetics. Through­ out her entire creative career, Innovation was her strength, as was her ability to combine her passion for sport with the huge stylish goals she set for herself. In Goldbergh, the embodiment of the signature that characterises her now comes into its own.

Sandra: “From a designer perspective, there’s always been a lack of fashionable sports and especially ski brands for women; with most women's sportswear going for practical and not particularly flattering. Not only does Goldbergh promise luxury and quality, but also personality. The Goldbergh woman has a twinkle in her eye and she’s not afraid to take risks.

Lieke adds: “What Goldbergh does is celebrate independence and womanhood. Every woman should have the confidence to leave her comfort zone every now and again.

It's important for her to do what she wants. You have to be able to express yourself. Live life to the fullest!”

These are the messages they have skilfully translated into the design and execution of their sportswear. The combination of functional and technical materials, practical and sophisticated product details, feminine fits and refined details create signature style. The brand proudly encourages women in their sporty lifestyle without having to compromise on style or functionality. TTheir collections appeal to independent, glamorous women of all ages who – despite wanting to keep up with the trends of the times – want to feel beautiful and attractive above all else.

But in the process, functionality and sustainability must never take a backseat. “We continue to innovate on sustainability and want to learn about new materials and production techniques on sustainability. We use recycled materials as much as possible and try to minimise our impact.”

Francesca: «Eigentlich sind wir das klassische Familienunternehmen. Nur ‘klassisch’ passt nicht so zu uns. Wir sind zwar mit Schweizer Werten aufgewachsen und schätzen diese, wir lieben aber das Spezielle, manchmal sogar das Schräge, Mainstream ist nicht so unser Ding. Wenn irgendwie möglich haben wir gerne das Beste und setzen auch alles daran, dies selber zu bieten. Wir brauchen die Herausforderung, Neues zu kreieren, nie Dagewesenes zu probieren, um Dinge entstehen zu lassen, die uns selbst begeistern.

No doubt about it, the brainchild and founder behind AK inadvertently passed on his ski bug and passion for technological perfection to his children Francesca and Marco. Today, together with their colleague Jean-Pierre (right in the photo) they form a power trio that is unparalleled in the ski scene. Not only are they themselves excellent skiers (check out their videos that speak for themselves!), but for many years they have been building, tinkering with and finding ways to improve the already excellent skis of the late legend that was Aldo Kuonen ­ († 2012) – aka AK. This relentless innovation has not only led to successful collaborations with Dior, Porsche or Hublot, but also brought with it a loyal customer base and broad dealer network. Their factory in Stans, central Switzerland, is a mixture of meeting place for ski lovers, photo studio, production and storage hall. Definitely always worth a visit, especially in the summer months when the team is on site and not on tour through the alpine snow world of Europe.

Auf der Suche nach dem Besonderen in der Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografie bin ich zuerst an der Zartheit von Neeltje de Vries hängengeblieben. Dann fiel mein Blick auf Marcus Schaefer und spontan empfand ich eine Faszination für seine poetisch-surreale Fotografie und seine Mischung der Kunsformen malen, bildhauern, fotografieren. Mir war sofort klar, dass es hier nicht um die Darstellung von Schönheit ging, sondern, dass er mit seiner Verzerrung der Realität eine eigene Schönheit erschafft.

Wir verabredeten uns zu einem Video-Call und seine Antworten übertrafen nicht nur meine Erwartungen, sondern stellen die Fotografie in unserer bildüberladenen Social Media-Welt in ein neues Licht.

Offensichtliche nicht offensichtlich erscheinen zu lassen. Somit nehme ich den/die Betrachter/in auf eine Reise durch meine Gedanken- und Bildwelt und integriere eine Variable, die zum fehlenden Element eines nicht reproduzierbaren Werkes wird.

„Errors & mistakes are essential in Marcus creative endeavours…” steht da auf Deiner Webseite. Die Imperfektion als perfektes Ziel?

G E DA N K E N U N D B I L D E R W E LT E N MARKKUS SCHAEFER (MS)

Fehler zulassen bedeutet Kontrolle zu reduzieren und Kontrolle zu reduzieren hilft meinem kreativen Prozess. Welche Prozesse ich bei der Entstehung meiner Werke mehr und welche ich weniger kontrolliere hängt von verschiedenen Faktoren ab und der jeweiligen Disziplin. In der Fotografie arbeite ich mit bestimmten Techniken, um die “Fehler” in meinen Aufnahmen zu ermutigen, und somit ungeplante und unbeabsichtigte Ergebnisse zu erzielen, ohne dabei die Kontrolle über das Bild zu verlieren. Ich akzeptiere den Fehler, denn er ist ein Garant für einzigartige Bilder. Ich neige dazu, nicht das exakte Abbild einer Sache zu fotografieren, sondern meine ganz persönliche Interpretation dessen einzufangen, was sich vor der Kamera befindet. Es geht eher darum, eine bestimmte Atmosphäre oder Gefühl zu erzeugen, als um die statische Reproduktion der Realität.

Ich sehne mich danach, alles Schöne und das Nicht-Offensichtliche visuell zu verhaften oder zumindest das

kende Menschen - einfach frischen, internationalen Input. Kommerzieller Erfolg kam in der Tat erst im Ausland und ist immer noch ein wichtiger Katalysator auf dem Weg zu zwei meiner größten Ziele - zum einen meine künstlerische Identität zu finden und zu verfeinern und zum anderen meiner materialistischen Karriere einen poetischen Mehrwert zu verleihen. Das eine ergibt sich aus dem anderen: Ich definiere den Wert meiner Karriere als Vehikel auf meinem Weg zur Suche nach meiner künstlerischen Identität und als Übertragungskanal in den verschiedenen Kunstformen.

In welchen Sprachen denkt, agiert und träumt Marcus Schaefer? Du lebst in Paris, aber nicht nur?

Rein visuell gesehen denke ich in Licht & Schatten, träume in hell & dunkel und agiere in organischen Formen, das ist die Sprache meiner Fotografien, Gemälde & Skulpturen.

Paris ja, aber ich verbringe auch sehr viel Zeit in meinem Atelier auf dem Land. Die Balance zwischen Stadt und Land ist mir sehr wichtig, ebenso wie das regelmäßige Reisen in andere Metropolen.

Musste Marcus Schaefer aus Deutschland raus, um sich dem freien Fehlertum hinzugeben?

Ich bin in einer “Seifenblase” auf dem Land im Allgäu aufgewachsen und wollte schon als Jugendlicher unbedingt ausbrechen und die Welt entdecken. Deutschland allein kam somit langfristig nicht für mich in Frage, sondern ich wollte etwas komplett Neues: Ein neuer Kulturkreis, eine andere Sprache und anders den-

Beautiful Individuals, waren dies reine Experimente, Kurz-Film-Ausflüge…da wäre doch noch viel mehr Film-Potential vorhanden?

Absolut - Film ist und bleibt spannend für mich. Das Bewegtbild ist eine wahnsinnig spannende Welt mit einer ganz anderen Dynamik und noch vielseitigeren Möglichkeiten.

Ich denke vorerst wird es allerdings bei abstrakten Kurzfilmen im Mode & Beauty Bereich bleiben, da mir für

alles weitere aktuell die Zeit fehlt.

kreativen Blockaden vor. Meine Werke unterschiedlicher Kunstformen leben in Symbiose miteinander und können auch nicht ohne einander.

Sie verfolgen schlussendlich das selbe Ziel - meine künstlerische Identität mehr und mehr zu verfeinern.

Welche Kunstform liegt dir am nächsten? Zeichnungen, Fotografie, Skulpturen? Ergibt sich deine Kreativität aus der Kombination der Kunstformen?

Jedes Medium hat seinen eigenen Charme und sein eigenes Potenzial.

Fotografie ist wie eine Zeitkapsel – sie stellt einem das magische Werkzeug zur Verfügung, in der Zeit hin und her zu reisen und die Realität wie einen zeitlosen Ort im Nichts erscheinen zu lassen. Der Film und seine zusätzliche Komponenten wie z.B. Filmmusik bietet das Gleiche und eben noch viel mehr.

Das Zeichnen und die Malerei helfen mir, meinen fotografischen Weg zu verstehen und auf die nächste Ebene zu heben – ich betrachte sie als eine Art Nabelschnur, die diese beiden Welten verbindet. Ich möchte fotografieren, was ich nicht malen kann, und ich möchte malen, was ich nicht fotografieren kann – daher werden meine Fotografien immer mehr zu einer Hybridform einer Malerei.

Skulpturen wiederum ermöglichen mir den Transfer in die drei-dimensionale Welt und das Entwerfen von Figuren meiner eigenen Fantasie (in der Regel Charaktere aus meinen Zeichnungen), in der nur meine Regeln gelten - es ist, als wäre man wieder Kind und könne die Energien seiner Träume in den Werken kanalisieren, was ihnen eine surreale Magie und Oase der Ruhe verleiht. Ich liebe die Abwechslung und genieße es zwischen Disziplinen hin und her zu springen. Eine Disziplin befruchtet die Andere. Mittlerweile bin ich an einem Punkt angelangt an dem ich alle Kunstformen praktizieren muss um meinen kreativen Flow auf einem hohen Niveau halten zu können. Der Wechsel beugt Betriebsblindheit und

Wie ist das nun mit dem -Kommerz?

Bist Du kommerziell erfolgreich gewesen, bevor Du zum «HybridKünstler» mutiert bist oder hat Dich deine hybride Art der Fotografie erst zum gefragten Fotografen gemacht, der für Giorgio Armani, Chanel oder Hermes arbeitet?

“Hybrid-Künstler” trifft es ganz gut - die kommerzielle Fotografie war schon immer mein Brot und Butter Geschäft und auch das musste & muss ich mir nach wie vor hart erarbeiten, da ich mit meiner Bildsprache ein klares Nischenprodukt bin. Ich bewege mich zwischen Kunst & Kommerz - daher der Status eines “Hybrids”. Meist sind meine kommerziellen Aufträge auf meine Bildsprache maßgeschneiderte und spannende, ästhetisch befriedigende Projekte - so wie bei einem erst kürzlich abgeschlossenen Werbeauftrag für Hermès Paris, welcher im November 2023 in Print & Film erscheinen ist. Die Projekte suchen sich oft mich aus und nicht umgekehrt. Komplette Narrenfreiheit hat man nie, am Ende des Tages bewerben wir ein Produkt und es sind diverse Parameter von Seiten des Kunden klar einzuhalten, aber dieser Kompromiss tut nicht weh und ich bleibe dennoch in meiner Bildwelt.

Was fasziniert Dich am Zeichenmedium Kohle? Sie hat Dich im Lockdown 2020 zu der hybriden Form der Fotografie geführt, welche

Welche Techniken wendest Du in der Fotografie an, um deine surrealen malerischen Effekte zu erzielen?

Es gibt bestimmte Techniken, die ich im Laufe der Jahre bei all meinen kreativen Unternehmungen entwickelt habe, dazu gehört in der Fotografie das Verwischen von Umrissen und das Modulieren von Tönen, sodass eine Form in eine andere weich übergehen kann und eine gewisse mystische Stimmung erzeugt. Das Kreieren von organischen Formen mit Licht & Schatten unterstreicht diesen Prozess. Ich setze schwer kontrollierbare Techniken wie Langzeitbelichtung, Mehrfachbelichtung und unkonventionelle Beleuchtung ein und spiele mit Proportionen, Dimensionen und Perspektiven, um eine Aufnahme mit zeitloser Dynamik einzufangen, die gleichsam einen malerischen Effekt hat.

An Kohle fasziniert mich die Einfachheit und Natürlichkeit des Produkts. Zudem der tiefe Schwarzton den man mit Kohle erzielen kann und die ehrliche, grobe Haptik.

Kohle ist ideal zum zeichnen von Schattierungen und auch harter Licht-Schatten-Kanten. Mittlerweile kombiniere ich Kohle mit Öl-Pastellen auf Leinwand. Und ja, das Zeichnen mit Kohle war mitunter ein wichtiger Wegbereiter für meine fotografische & künstlerische Entwicklung der letzten Jahre.

Wohin man blickt, erschaut der Betrachter schwarz-weiße Bilder, Fotos, Skulpturen. Hast du Dich von Beginn an zu dieser schwarz-weissen Welt hingezogen gefühlt?

Ich habe mich schon immer zur Nicht-Farbe Schwarz hingezogen gefühlt und stelle Schwarz in den Mittelpunkt meiner Arbeit und nutze sie als zentrale Komponente meiner visuellen Botschaft. Für mich ist es so als würde ich eine “auf dem Kopf stehende Welt” betreten, die viel sensibler, abstrakter und intimer ist als die Welt der Farben. Sie bietet völlig neue Wege der Flucht und des Ausdrucks. Schwarz hilft beim Komponieren und Lenken jenseitiger Schwingungen in einem Nicht-Farbraum. In meinen Augen ist Schwarz die Verkörperung der Dichotomie, einerseits ist es sehr dominant, stark und einschüchternd, andererseits ist es irgendwie verletzlich, melancholisch und sensibel. Schwarz ist multidimensional, scheint endlos und lässt mich an das dunkle, unendliche Universum, schwarze Löcher, die Schwerkraft und den Beginn des Lebens denken. Es ist faszinierend und lässt mich über mich selbst reflektieren, als würde ich in einen Spiegel blicken. Schwarz ist fesselnd und wirkt (für viele) sehr deprimierend, frustrierend und tot, ist aber in Wirklichkeit äußerst sexy, lebendig und beflügelnd. Die polarisierende Vielseitigkeit ist was ich daran wirklich liebe, und deshalb ist das Element Schwarz und Weiß von grundlegender Bedeutung in all meinen kreativen Unternehmungen.

Welche Projekte motivieren Dich aktuell?

Aktuell motiviert mich die Fertigstellung einer achtköpfigen Serie von lebensgroßen Skulpturen, die mich schon einige Monate intensiv beschäftigt und ich es kaum erwarten kann, sie endlich alle fertig zu haben.

Was macht Marcus Schaefer in seiner Freizeit? Wenn er sich mal von der eigenen Kreativität entspannt.

In meiner Freizeit befasse ich mich akribisch mit der Wissenschaft, da ich eine tiefe Faszination für das Universum, andere Planeten & Sonnensysteme, antike Technologien, Megastrukturen, Hochkulturen & deren Kunstformen habe.

zu geben. Das Unterbewusstsein ist das eigentlich mysteriöse, das Bewusste eine rein technische oder operative Notwendigkeit. Blickt man zurück in die Vergangenheit und die Anfänge der Fotografie, realisiert man wie magisch Fotografie im Vergleich zur heutigen digitalen, automatisierten Fotografie einmal war.

Zu Zeiten des Piktorialismus - Ende des 19. und auch noch Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts - haben die damals wesentlich geringeren technischen Mittel in der Fotografie, oft zu fehlerhaften Bilddarstellungen geführt, die ihren eigenen Charme innehatten. Durch das Praktizieren von Langzeitbelichtungen taucht man auch in den Nischenbereich der “spirit photography” ein. Man fängt also nicht einen Moment ein, sondern viele. Vergangenheit, Gegenwart & Zukunft in einem Bild. Hier wurde im Grunde das “spektrale Element” in der Fotografie und somit das magische Werkzeug entdeckt, in der Zeit hin und her zu reisen und das „Jetzt“ wie einen zeitlosen Ort in der Leere erscheinen zu lassen.

Haben wir in unserer bild-überladenen Welt vergessen, poetisch zu sein?

Ich denke das digitale Zeitalter und all seine Facetten (Smart Phone, Soziale Medien, KI etc.) hat u.a. zu einem Paradigmenwechsel in der Welt der Fotografie geführt. Das Medium der Fotografie ist allgegenwärtig und geradezu inflationär geworden, was in meinen Augen Segen und Fluch zugleich ist. Die “Poesie-Fotografie” koexistiert als visuelles Schmuckstück mit der größtenteils “banalen” Bilderflut und wird mehr und mehr zur Nadel im Heuhaufen. Zudem

On the hunt for that je ne sais quoi that defines black and white photography is what first attracted me to the finesse of the works of Neeltje de Vries. Then my gaze fell upon Marcus Schaefer and I was spontaneously drawn in by a fascination for his poetically surreal photography and his combination of art forms: painting, sculpting and photography. It was immediately clear to me that this was not about showcasing beauty, but rather about creating beauty all of his own, with his unique take on reality. We arranged to meet via face time and his answers not only exceeded all my expectations, but also put photography in a whole new light in a world where social media and the perpetual image overload it subjects us to is king.

Making allowances for mistakes means making allowances for reducing control and reducing control helps my creative processes. The level of control that I opt for, be it more or less, is determined by a variety of factors and is contingent upon the respective discipline. In photography, I work with certain techniques, ­thereby achieving unplanned and unintentional outcomes without losing control of the image. I accept the ‘mistakes’ because they’re fundamental to what makes a unique image. I tend not to go for an exact likeness of what I’m photographing, but rather go for my own personal

From a purely visual perspective I think in light and shadows, dream in light and darkness and operate in organic forms. That’s the language of my photographs.

Did Marcus Schaefer have to leave Germany to give himself free rein to make mistakes?

MS

Yes, to create that all-important balance that my base in Paris and my studio offer me today; as do visits to other big Metropolises after living in a bubble in the countryside in the German Allgäu for so long. With fresh international input I achieved my two biggest goals: Firstly commercial success, which secondly in turn created for me the vehicle that allowed me to find my artistic identity; the two feeding off one another concurrently. My material existence thereby gains poetic added value.

Were those pure experiments, just random shoots out on an excursion … or surely there’s a lot more film potential there?

You’ve developed your own choreography. Testimony to it are the films

Absolutely – film is and remains exciting for me. The moving image is an incredibly exhilarating world that has a completely different dynamic; and makes for more varied opportunities. For the time being, however, in the absence of the necessary time, abstract shorts in the fashion & beauty sector are my limit.

Which art form resonates with you most? Drawings, photography, sculptures? Would you say your creativity comes from that combination?

Every medium has its own charm and its own potential. Photography is like a time capsule – it puts at your disposal the magical tool to travel back and forth in time and allow reality to look like a timeless place in the void. Film and its added components like the score offer the same and much more. To me, drawing and painting make for the umbilical cord connecting the two worlds. I want to take pictures of what I cannot draw, and draw what I cannot take pictures of. This is why my photographs are increasingly turning into a hybrid form of a drawing. Sculptures in turn, take me to a three-dimensional world where only my rules count, as do the characters from my own imagination. The diversity of art forms that live in symbiosis with one another and cannot live without one another is the hallmark of my creati-

Before you became this ‘hybrid artist’ as it were, were you commercially successful already? Or was it the catalyst that turned you into the sought-after photographer now working for Giorgio Armani, Chanel or Hermès?

‘Hybrid artist’ is pretty apt. Commercial photography has always been my bread and butter and to this day doesn’t come easy without hard work. It’s a niche product that has me move between art and commerce and gives me the status of a hybrid. Most projects are tailor-made commercial commissions that require upholding the diverse parameters outlined by the client; still these are comparatively small compromises amidst the visual language that is mine. The projects often seek me out and not me looking for them. Case in point, the recent collaboration with Hermès Paris, appeared in november 2023 in Print & Film.

What photographic techniques do you use to achieve your surreal picturesque effects?

with a clearer outlet. The subconscious is that which is mysterious – the conscious is pure technical or operative necessity. At the end of the 19th century well into the 20th, with photography having fewer technical methods, it often led to incorrect image representations, mistakes which had a charm all of their own.

What fascinates you about charcoals as a drawing medium? In lockdown 2020, it did after all lead you to the hybrid form of photography which distinguishes you today.

Charcoal has indeed been a pioneer of sorts for my photographic development these past years. It’s simple and organic, that’s what fascinates me about it as does the deep black tone that one can achieve with it and the honest rough feel. Charcoal is ideal for the drawing of shades and also harder light-shadow edges.

I’m now combining charcoal with oil pastels on canvas.

The blurring of outlines and the modulation of toning, turning one shape into another in a smooth transition, creating a mystical atmosphere.

The creating of organic shapes with light and shadow underlines this process. I introduce hard-to-control techniques such as long exposure, multiple exposure and unconventional displays of lights, plus I play with proportions, dimensions and perspectives to take a shot where I can capture a timeless dynamic that has the artistic effect of a painting at the same time.

Everywhere you look, the observer will see pictures, photos and sculptures that are black and white. Did you feel drawn to this world from the get-go?

I’ve always felt myself drawn to the non-colour black. I use it as the focal point of my visual message. It’s like escaping into a world turned upside down that is far more sensitive, abstract and intimate than the strong, overwhelming and dominant world of colour. Black is multidimensional, timeless and reminiscent of the endless universe, black holes and the beginning of life. The polarising aspect of black is what I love about it. Black is not depressing as many perceive but in reality extremely sexy, lively und inspiring.

Have we lost the ability to be poetic in the image overload of today’s world?

I believe the digital age in all its facets like the smart phone, social media, AI etc. have led to a paradigm shift in the world of photography.

It’s an ever-present medium, a banal flood of images dominated by a completely new playing field: images generated from KI stock photos. And paradoxically they let the poetry of the beginnings of photography come to life on social media.

What projects are your current motivations?

The completion of an eight-piece series of life-sized sculptures that I’ve been working on intensively for a few months already and can hardly wait to complete.

What do you do to relax? When you take a break from your creativity?

In my free time I immerse myself in the world of science. The universe, other planets & solar systems, ancient technologies, mega structures, advanced cultures and their art forms have always had a deep fascination for me.

Tavolata entstammt dem italienischen und bedeutet soviel wie Tafelrunde.

Menschen kommen zusammen zum gemeinsamen Kochen, Essen und Geniessen. Und so mag es kein Zufall sein, dass auch hier viel Italianità dabei war. An vorderster Stelle das STUDIO FARINA, Aushängeschild von wunderbarer in Handarbeit hergestellter Pasta. Oder Walter Sais, welcher in seiner authentisch neapolitanischen Art Herrenanzüge massschneidert. Oder der obligate, bestangezogenste Butler, der nicht genannt werden will. Dazu die bunte Schar an Kunststudentinnen von Dimitri, die gerade nach Berlin abreisen oder aus London angekommen sind. Nicht selten gesellen sich Filmemacherinnen, Designer, Musikmanager oder Lachshersteller hinzu. Ein Gewusel an wunderbar bunten Menschen, die je nach Tages- oder Jahreszeit wechseln und sich nicht selten beim Kommen und Gehen spontan die Türklinke in die Hand geben.

Mal sitzt man zu zehnt in der leicht schmuddeligen Küche, trinkt Wein oder versucht die marode Kaffeemaschine zum Glühen zu bringen. Ein andermal – meist im Sommer – breitet sich die Gesellschaft über die Laderampe des Hauses an der Seestrasse aus.

Tische werden aufgestellt, Stühle rangerückt und ein Gewirr von Sprachen ergiesst sich Richtung See, meist bis tief in die Nacht hinein. Im Winter verlagert sich das bunte Treiben nach innen – und wo lässt es sich gemütlicher sitzen, essen und feiern – so dachten wir diesmal – als mitten unter Dimitris Bildern?! Das Malatelier ist derart von Farbflecken übersät, dass eine Kürbisfüllung oder ein Rotweinfleck nicht gross ins Gewicht und kaum jemandem auffallen. Ausserdem ist es einfach eine traumhafte Atmosphäre, welche Gespräche in jede Himmelrichtung inspiriert. Und das ist ja der eigentliche Sinn der Tavolata. Menschen begegnen Menschen. Den Moment zu nehmen wie er sich gerade bietet. Herkunft, Beruf, Alter spielen keine Rolle mehr, eine Rangordnung ist zwecklos, die Tavolata genügt sich selber. Der Austausch, die Menschen selber sind der Mittelpunkt. Es kann auf dieser Welt gar nicht genügend Tavolata geben. Jede dieser zwanglosen Begegnungen bringt Menschen in einem guten Sinne zusammen und macht das Leben ein wenig lebenswerter. Je spontaner und offener, desto besser. In diesem Sinne sind sie eine alte, aber zukunftsträchtige Tradition, welche für eine offene kosmopolitische Gesellschaft steht.

Gian Marco Castelberg, ein nicht minder liebenswürdiger Mensch und begnadeter Fotograf erbarmte sich unser und erklärte sich bereit, dieser Tavolata den Schritt in die digitale Ewigkeit zu gewähren.

Tavolata hails from the Italian for round table in all its permutations. People gathering to cook, eat and enjoy life together. So it’s hardly by chance that a whole variety of all things Italian were discernible here also.

At the forefront of gatherings like this is the STUDIO FARINA – the flagship manufactory of the concept’s wonderful handcrafted pasta. And among the stand-out personalities for this tavolata was Walter Sais, who tailors men’s suits in his authentic Neapolitan way. Also discernible is the obligatory best-dressed butler who doesn’t want to be named.

Plus a colourful group of art students who have just left for Berlin or arrived from London. It’s not uncommon for filmmakers, designers, music managers or salmon producers to join in, depending on the time of day or the time of year. All following close on one another’s heels.

Sometimes there are ten people sitting in the anachronism of a kitchen, drinking wine or trying to get the antiquated coffee machine going. At other times – mainly in the summer – the company is

spread across the loading ramp into the lakeside Seestrasse. Tables are set up, chairs pulled up and the buzz of different languages carries in the direction of the lake, often deep into the night. While in summer, the colourful comings and goings take themselves outside, in winter, what better place to get comfortable and celebrate than right under Dimitri’s paintings!?

The eatery that doubles up with Dimitri’s studio is so heavily marked with paint spots that a red wine stain on a table cloth is hardly something anyone will notice. Aside from that it’s a simply dreamlike atmosphere, which inspires conversations in every direction.

And that’s the real meaning of tavolata. Human interaction. To seize the moment as it presents itself, where origin, profession and age no longer play a role. A hierarchy is non-existent, the tavolata is enough for itself. The exchange of conversations, the people themselves are the focus.

There certainly aren’t enough tavolatas in the world to go around.

Each of these casual encounters brings people together in a good way and makes life a little more worth living. The more spontaneous, open and authentic, the better. It’s an old tradition, but a promising one which embraces an open cosmopolitan society.

Gian Marco Castelberg, a gifted photographer and very likeable human being, took pity on us and agreed to take the step into the digital world and commit this particular tavolata to eternity. Mamma mia. It was a huge pleasure and worth countless repetitions!

Wie hat sich Deine Kunst entwickelt?

Grundsätzlich bin ich Autodidakt. Angefangen habe ich fotorealistisch, bin dann ins Surreale übergegangen und von da aus wieder ins Landschaftliche.

Eigentlich suche ich immer den Bezug zu meiner Umgebung, der Natur, wie z.B. dem Schilf an meinem aktuellen Wohnort am Zürichsee. Mich treibt der Gedanke um, wie sich Landschaft im Laufe der Zeit verändert. Alte Stiche aus dem 19. Jahrhundert inspirierten mich.

Ich übertrage diese digital, vergrössere Ausschnitte von Bäumen, Baumkronen, Schilf oder Wasserstrudeln, übertrage sie auf die Leinwand, abstrahiere und interpretiere die Landschaft dann inhaltlich wie farblich neu.

Und dann kommt dein eigentliches Markenzeichen, die Beschichtung? Wie kam es dazu?

Genau. Dies habe ich einem Galeriebesuch in Japan ganz am Anfang meiner Karriere, Ende der 90er Jahre, zu verdanken. Dort wird alles, auch ein einzelnes Ohrstäbchen, in Plastik verpackt. Da kam mir die Idee, meine Bilder zu «verpacken».

Wie genau sieht diese Verpackung aus?

Ich male und lackiere in mehreren Arbeitsgängen. Der Lack verleiht den Werken eine zusätzliche Dimension.

Die Beschichtung erscheint glänzend, manchmal tropfenartig, an anderen Stellen wiederum frei von Lack. Der Kunstharz, mit welchem wir die Bilder am Ende überziehen, erzeugt eine gallertartige Haptik. Je nach Grundmaterial verhält sich Kunst- oder synthetischer Lack aber anders. Im Falle von Kupferplatten führt der Lack zu einer chemischen

Reaktion mit der darunterliegenden Farbschicht. Es kommt zu Verfärbungen, Kupfer oxidiert. D.h. das Bild «lebt» und verändert sich, was es umso faszinierender macht und wiederum Symbol für die sich verändernde Landschaft ist.

Dein Werk erinnert ja auch an den Japanischen Holzschnitt. Auch diese suchen in einer poetischen Art nach dem Wesen der Natur…

Meine Poesie ist einerseits ein raffiniertes Spiel aus Glanz und Trübung, anderseits geheimnisvolle, manchmal ins Fantastische abgleitende Landschaften oder die Entfaltung einer poe­tisch-absurden Erzählung wie im Bilderzyklus „Covid 19, Paradise Lost“. Hybride Wesen auf Stelzen und Rädern bewegen sich in Kreisen und Ovalen. Darsteller sind auch gestirnartige Blumen, durch das Bild huschende Hasen, aus geheimnisvollen Urgründen herausschwimmende Fische. Sie wecken Assoziationen an ein Paradies, das hinter der Realität aus traumhafter Erinnerung erscheint.

A MODERN EPICUREAN

If the word means someone who lives and breathes life to the fullest without any constraints, that is who Dimitri Horta is. The artist’s loud laugh echoes through the studio. Epicureans are people who worship happiness – and ART Of soon found out that, as someone who enjoys his calling, Horta sure has experienced a good share of that.

How did your art develop?

I’m essentially self-taught. Photorealistic is how I started out; then I moved into the surreal and from there back into landscapes.

Actually, I’m driven by the notion that my surroundings, especially nature, are always in the throws of change. Old engravings from the 19th century inspire me. I transfer these digitally, enlarge sections of trees, treetops, reeds or water whirlpools, transfer them to a screen; then abstract from it the landscape and give it a new interpretation in terms of content and colour.

How did your real trademark, the coating come about?

I owe this to a gallery visit in Japan at the very beginning of my career. Even if you buy a single ear bud, it is packaged in plastic.

That’s when the idea came to me, “to package” my pictures.

What shape exactly does this “packaging” take?

I paint and varnish in several steps. The varnish gives the works an additional dimension. The coating appears shiny, sometimes droplike or even free of paint in other places. The synthetic resin with which we cover the pictures at the end creates a gelatinous feel. Depending on the base material, artificial or synthetic paint behaves differently. In the case of copper plates, the paint causes a chemical reaction with the underlying paint layer. Discoloration occurs and copper oxidizes. The landscape changes, comes alive as it were.

Your work reminds us of those poetic Japanese woodcuts?

I’d say my poetry is a sophisticated play of gloss and opacity on the one hand, and on the other, mysterious landscapes that sometimes slide into the fantastic or the unfolding of a poetic-absurd narrative. Like in: Covid 19, Paradise Lost. Hybrid creatures move on stilts and wheels move in circles and ellipses. The protagonists are mysterious star-like flowers, rabbits or fish flitting through the picture, awaking behind the reality a dreamlike memory.

Das Entscheidende sind aber die Füllungen, allen voran der Klassiker Riccota-Spinaci. Aber auch saisonale Füllungen mit Kürbis, Spargeln, Auberginen, Zitrone sind beliebt. Loris: «An den Füllungen tüfteln wir immer weiter rum. Nur die genaue Rezeptmischung bleibt natürlich unser Geheimnis. Unsere Leidenschaft für exzellente Zutaten und Handwerkskunst spiegelt sich aber in jedem unserer frischen und handgemachten Produkte wider.»

Auf die Frage nach dem Lohn für gute Arbeit, meint Loris «Das Schönste ist, wenn Gäste unsere Pasta geniessen und dabei die Gespräche am Tisch verstummen. Dann wissen wir, dass wir einen guten Job gemacht haben.»

Die 100m2 grosse Manufaktur wird sich 2025 auf 400m2 vergrössern. Dann wird man in Kursen die Kunst des Pastamachens selber erlernen können.

Sohn Loris, der sich als Direttore Bottega bei Vergani in der Gastronomie hochgearbeitet hat, hebt diese Tradition mit dem neu gegründeten Studio Farina nun auf ein neues Niveau. Die Manufaktur hat bereits eine ganze Schar gehobener Restaurants (wie das Kaufleuten) als Kunden gewinnen können.

Jeden Tag werden einige hundert Kilo frischgemachter Pasta ausgeliefert.

It is the brainchild of her son Loris, previously a sales director at Vergani after working himself up the catering ladder. Since its inception, the artisanal workshop Studio Farina has already been able to attract a whole host of upscale restaurants as customers. Several hundred kilograms of freshly handcrafted pasta is delivered daily, the taste palette capturing the whole spectrum of Italian pasta worlds: tortellini, triangles, ravioli, fettuccine, spaghetti, lasagne. Hand-crafted is a given and not forgetting the fillings. The classic is Spinach Ricotta, but seasonal choices like pumpkin, asparagus, eggplant and lemon also hit home. Loris: “As much as we adapt the fillings, the recipe mixture will remain our secret. When the conversation at the table falls silent, it is testimony to how good our pasta really is.

It’s our reward.”

Walter Sais ist angenehm, zuvorkommend und stilsicher. Wie man sich den Massschneider eben vorstellt. Im Gespräch mit ART OF meint er: «Heute gibt es nicht mehr die strengen Dresscodes von früher. Das Publikum für Mass­bekleidung ist breiter geworden.

Die Palette reicht vom Ausgelernten bis zum Top-Manager. Es gibt auch Junge, die sich bei mir eine Bermuda mass­ schneidern lassen. Meine Kunden legen Wert auf Individualität. Massbekleidung ist ein persönliches Statement. Für einige Männer ist es zudem eine Frage von Service und Bequemlichkeit. Ich besuche Sie zu Hause und wir können in Ruhe Mass nehmen und die Stoffe aussuchen.»

Und die Materialien? «Wir verarbeiten die allerbesten Stoffe von Ariston, Loro Piana, Zegna. Wir können aber auch mit Kleidern ab der Stange (Schuhe, Mäntel) kombinieren, decken also die komplette Palette ab.» Nachhaltigkeit? «Ein Mass­

anzug ist extrem nachhaltig. Er ist mit Wertschätzung verbunden, man trägt ihn länger und alle Materialien kommen aus Europa.» network

It seems nowadays the audience for made-to-measure clothing has broadened beyond age or professional standing. Sais says: “Today there are no longer the strict dress codes of the past. The individuality of custom clothing is a personal statement; the question of service an unrivalled convenience at your home.” And only the very best fabrics will do, be they from Ariston, Loro Piana, Zegna. As will sustainability? “A measure suit is extremely sustainable. It is associated with appreciation, you will wear it for much longer.”

Keine zweite Chance. «Mich interessierten immer Menschen. Auf meinem Weg lernte ich auch im Umfeld viele tolle Menschen kennen. Das ist das Schöne in meinem Beruf.»

Was braucht es für ein perfektes Portrait? «Bei mir ist es 50% Planung und 50% Improvisation. Man bereitet sich vor – und trifft in der Realität vielleicht jemand «ganz anders» an. Die Kunst besteht dann darin, die Stimmung zu erzeugen, in welcher die fotografierte Person vergisst, dass sie vor einer Kamera steht. Das kann mal länger dauern oder spontan passieren.» network

What does it take? “For me it's 50% planning and 50% improvisation. You prepare yourself – and in reality you might meet someone ‘entirely different’. The art lies therein, in creating the mood in which the person being photographed forgets that they are standing in front of a camera. Die kulinarische Vielfalt von Zürich wird reichhaltiger. Dies an einem Ort, der in einem gewissen Sinne im DornröschenSchlaf gelegen hatte. Jacky Donatz, der hier in seinen goldenen Zeiten einen kulinarischen Hotspot geschaffen hatte und 2022 verstarb, hätte seine Freude gehabt an dieser «Auferstehung».

Des einen Konkurs (das Flimser Wald­ haus Resort), des andern Glück! Gastgeber Marc Wyss konnte die beiden überzeugen, hier ihre Zelte aufzuschlagen.

Mit Brandt und Oberhofer kam fast das gesamte Team mit nach Zürich. Ausdruck der Verbundenheit eines eingeschworenen Teams, auch eines Verantwortungsgefühls gegenüber den Mitarbeitenden. Zur Auswahl stand wohl nicht nur Zürich.

Denn Tristan Brandt ist inzwischen auch Patron im „Riva by Tristan Brandt“ in Pforzheim und im „Tambourine Room by Tristan Brandt“ in Miami Beach, Florida, das bereits wenige Monate nach Eröffnung mit einem Michelin Stern ausgezeichnet wurde.

Weitere Eröffnungen stehen an. Brandt: «Wir übernehmen die gastronomische Leitung des Schlosshotels Reinhartshausen und bieten im Winter mit dem Popup «Artis by Tristan Brandt» erstmals Gourmetküche im Hotel Prätschli in Arosa an. Und für 2024 steht New York auf dem Programm!» Nebenbei feierte er am 30.11.23 mit der Heidelberger Dinner-Show «Wintervariété by Tristan Brandt» eine sensationelle Premiere.

Und nun also Zürich. Die Aussicht grandios, Alpenbogen, Zürichsee und die Stadt in einem Augen-Blick. Ein Ort zum Feste feiern. Das erste Grossevent, die Fortsetzung des Steil’ART Festivals der Künste ist bereits angekündigt, auf den 1.9.2024. Weitere werden folgen, dafür sorgt der umtriebige und an der Eröffnung vor Freude strahlende Marc Wyss.

Das Setting ist vollendet, das Design des Epoca erstrahlt in neuem Glanz. Dazu wurde das ehemalige Club-Lokal im 1. Stock aufwendig renoviert. Es begrüsst maximal 24 Geniesser:innen in einem hellen Raum mit Bar, auf einem mit Intarsien verzierten Parkettboden. Kunstobjekte sorgen für weiteren Augenschmaus. «Wir bieten einen Platz zum Wohlfühlen und Genießen, einen Ort für eine kulinarische Auszeit.

Eine moderne französische Küche kombinieren wir mit regionalen Produkten und asiatischen Einflüssen» so Küchenchef Niklas Oberhofer. «Die Gäste können eine kulinarische Reise mit 6 oder 8 Gängen wählen, das „Signature-Menü“ mit Fleisch und Fisch oder die vegetarische Alternative Signature Flora». Die alkoholfreie Begleitung ist exzellent. Das Küchenteam hat 12 verschiedene geschmackvolle Säfte fermentiert und kreiert. Die servierten Amuse Bouche, Purées aus Topinambur, vielerorts steckt Fermentations-Kompetenz drin, die den feinen kleinen Unterschied macht.

Sous Chef Simon Bantle ist für das grössere Restaurant im Parterre zuständig. Tristan Brandt: «Der Sonnenberg soll für alle da sein. Wir wollen im Erdgeschoss und im Sommer, dann mit toller Terrasse, eine gute Brasserie-Küche anbieten, die ich mit meinen Signatures und kleinen Besonderheiten ergänzen werde.»

A CULINARY JOURNEY

The place: beyond legendary; the culinary offerings: more than promising; the team: top notch. With Epoca, the Sonnenberg Restaurant, located high above Zurich, is effectively ushering in a new era. Not only for itself but also for Zurich.

For with culinary patron Tristan Brandt who already has a star restaurant to his name and chef Niklas Oberhofer, the place has a team whose excellent international reputation precedes it. Tristan Brandt was Germany's youngest two-star chef. Under his mentorship Niklas Oberhofer was awarded the youngest star chef in Switzerland in 2022 – at the age of 25.

With Epoca, Zurich’s culinary diversity is reaching new heights. A ‘resurrection’ of sorts that the city’s late celebrity chef Jacky Donatz, who created a culinary hotspot here in his ‘golden age’ would have enjoyed.

One person's bankruptcy (the Waldhaus Flims Resort in the Alps) was another's fortune! Host Marc Wyss was able to con­vince the two of them Brandt and Oberhofer to pitch their tents here as it were. And they brought with them their team.

An expression of solidarity and responsibility towards their trusted employees.

The view is magnificent, the Alps, Lake Zurich and the city all in one moment. A place to celebrate festivals. The first

major event, the continuation of the Steil’ART Festival of the Arts, has already been announced for September 1st, 2024.

More will follow, thanks to the busy MD Marc Wyss, who is beaming with joy at the opening.

The setting is complete, the design of the Epoca shines in all its new splendour. For this purpose, the former club location on the first floor was extensively renovated. It welcomes a maximum of 24 connoisseurs in a bright room with a bar. A parquet floor decorated with inlays is complemented by art objects in a further feast for the eyes.

“We offer a place to feel good and enjoy; a place for a culinary break. We combine modern French cuisine with regional products and Asian influences,” says chef Niklas Oberhofer.

“Guests can go on a culinary journey with 6 or 8 courses, the Signature Menu with meat and fish or the vegetarian alternative Signature Flora”. The non-alcoholic accompaniment is excellent. The kitchen team fermented and created 12 different tasty juices.

Sous Chef Simon Bantle is responsible for the larger restaurant on the ground floor. Tristan Brandt: “The Sonnenberg is for everyone. We want to offer good brasserie cuisine on the ground floor with a great terrace in the summer, which I will complement with my signatures and small special features.”

Er hat etwas Archetypisches. Den Feuerring kann man sich im Altertum vorstellen, er hätte zu den ägyptischen Pyramiden gepasst, erinnert an die ewige olympische Flamme.

Die Beherrschung und Nutzung des Feuers gehören zu den größten Errungenschaften der Menschheitsgeschichte. Der Stellenwert, den es im Glauben der meisten Völker einnimmt, bestätigt dies. Der göttliche Ursprung des Feuers macht es zu einem heiligen Element. Andreas Reichlin hat das Feuer in eine ästhetisch nutzbare Form gefasst. Beides zusammen lässt uns fasziniert davor stehen oder ringsum sitzen. Reichlin:

len ihre perfekte Form erhalten. «Der Ring wird nahtlos mit der Schale verschweisst, ein echter Feuerring ist wie aus einem Guss. Was in der Kunst das Unikat, ist beim Feuerring das perfekt umgesetzte Design», so Andreas Reichlin.

Inzwischen gibt es 19 Modelle und der Feuerring hält Patente und seit 2022 auch das Urheberrecht in Deutschland sowie in der Schweiz. Ein wichtiger Schritt Richtung Klassiker, eine Vision, die Reichlin zusammen mit seiner Partnerin Beate Hoyer seit Firmengründung begleitet und nun umgesetzt ist.

Und ja – man kann ihn natürlich wunderbar auch zum Kochen und Grillieren nutzen. Sterneköche tun dies genauso wie Hobbyköche. Rezeptebücher sind für die Feuerring-Familie vorhanden, aber die Grundfunktion ist einfach und selbsterklärend. Reichlin: „Die Temperatur am Inneren des Rings beträgt ca. 300 Grad und außen 150 Grad – je nach Ringbreite. Sogar Niedergaren auf 80 Grad ist möglich.“ Das Kochen stand gar Pate zur Idee, denn der Stahlplastiker vertrug über dem Rost Gegrilltes nicht. «Beim Feuerring tropft kein Fett in die Glut. Dadurch entstehen keine gesundheitsschädigenden Stoffe.»

Geselliges Beisammensein ums Element Feuer, gemeinsames Kochen, ästhetische Bereicherung. So entfaltet der Feuerring seine sinnesübergreifende Wirkung und Faszination.

«Der Feuerring passt in einen historischen Raum genauso wie in moderne Architektur. Je einfacher die Form, desto besser funktioniert sie in verschiedenen Kontexten.»

Werfen wir einen Blick in die Entstehung des Feuerrings: Es ist laut – Hämmern, Schweissen, Kettenrasseln. Es wird angepackt, Gewichte werden gestemmt, voller Körpereinsatz ist gefordert. Wir sind in der Fertigungshalle eines Metallbauers.

Mit Kranen werden die schweren Stahlbleche positioniert. Ein Blechdrücker fertigt für alle Modelle (ausser Luna Grande) die passenden Holzformen nach Reichlins Ideen. Darüber werden Bleche mittels einer Druckrolle und 12 t Kraft in kaltem Zustand gedrückt. Dies erfordert Fingerspitzengefühl und Erfahrung sowie eine Stahllegierung, die auf Zug nicht reisst und beim Stauchen keine Falten wirft – damit die Feuerscha-

Combining the form and space of the archetype in all its perfection that already defines it, enter the latest addition model to the Feuerring: the Luna Grande. Boasting a diameter of up to 260cm it can best be described as a work of sculptural aesthetics that will keenly take its pride of place anywhere in the great outdoors. With it, its maker Andreas Reichlin has definitely inched his creations ever closer to art.

There is something archetypal about it. In ancient times, reminiscent of the eternal Olympic flame, you can also imagine the Feuerring at home among the Egyptian pyramids. The harnessing of fire and the use of it by early humans are among the greatest achievements in our history and the place fire occupies in beliefs globally confirms this. The divine origin of fire makes it a sacred element. Andreas Reichlin has captured fire in an aesthetically usable form. The combination has us standing before it, sitting around it fascinated.

This is what the inventor of these patented originals that are the Feurring had to say to ART OF about his masterpieces: “The Feuerring fits into a historical space as well as into modern architecture. The simpler the form, the better it works in different contexts.”

And if we were to take a look at how the Feuerring is created, it can be loud, with plenty of hammering, welding and chain rattling. Full physical effort is required, weights lifted as the metalworker does his thing, the heavy steel sheets positioned into place by cranes. A sheet metal spinner produces the matching wooden moulds for all models (except Luna Grande) according to Reichlin's ideas. Sheets are then cold pressed using a pressure roller and 12 tonnes of force. This requires great dexterity and experience, as well as a steel alloy that does not tear when pulled and does not wrinkle when compressed – so the fire bowls are sure to get their perfect shape.

Whatever it is that makes for a unique piece of art, in the case

of the Feuerring, for Andreas Reichlin this element has to be the perfectly implemented design.

Meanwhile Andreas and his partner Beate have achieved the all important step of having the Feuerring patented and since 2022 it also has copyright protection in Germany and Switzerland. Nowadays star chefs and amateurs alike have caught on to its grilling and cooking merits.

Socialising around the element of fire, cooking together, aesthetic enrichment. This is how the Feuerring unfolds its cross-sensory effect and fascination.

Das gilt aber doch sicher nicht für die oberste Hornschicht, das Objekt der Kosmetik. Es handelt sich doch hier um abgestorbene Zellen.

Die äußere Grenzschicht unserer Haut, die Hornzellen sind so tot, wie Frauen nach der Menopause. Ich würde Frauen jenseits der Menopause nicht als "abgestorben" oder totes Gewebe bezeichnen. Die Hornzellen haben zwar keinen Zellkern mehr und können sich deshalb über Teilung nicht mehr reproduzieren, aber es ist nachgewiesen, dass sie nach Fremdzellenkontakt das Komplement auslösen können und einen wichtigen Beitrag zu unserer Verteidigung gegen Krankheitskeime leisten.

In unserem dritten Teil über das außergewöhnliche Kosmetikunternehmen Rosel Heim aus dem Schwarzwald unterhalten wir uns mit Frau Dr. Nana Heim, die Chemikerin der Familie.

Liebe Frau Dr. Heim, Sie haben Ihre Doktorarbeit über die Strukturaufklärung und anschließenden enatiomerenreine Totalsynthese des Flechtenmakrolid Aspicilin im renommierten auf Naturstoffsynthese und Photochemie spezialisierten Arbeitskreis von Prof. Dr. Gerhard Qumkert geschrieben.War da ein Werdegang in der Arzneimittelforschung nicht vorprogrammiert?

Ja eigentlich schon, aber gegen Ende meiner Doktorarbeit ist eine bis dahin völlig neue Krankheit aufgetreten: AIDS. Die Menschen starben nicht am Virus, sondern ihr Immunsystem war plötzlich nicht mehr in der Lage, sich gegen banale Infekte zur Wehr zu setzen.

Und wir Wissenschaftler erkannten, dass wir über unser Immunsystem so gut wie nichts wussten. Das Immunsystem und sein Zusammenspiel mit dem Hormon- und Nervensystem hat mich seither nicht mehr losgelassen.

Nun das erklärt aber nicht, warum wir Sie jetzt ausgerechnet in einer Kosmetikfirma finden.

Bis heute ist den meisten Menschen nicht bewusst, dass unsere Haut Teil des stationären Immunsystems ist. So können alle Zellen der Oberhaut, auch Epidermis genannt, den Dienstausweis des Immunsystems vorweisen und sind damit fester Bestandteil dessen. Außerdem befinden sich in der Epidermis durchschnittlich doppelt so viele T-Zellen als im Blut.

Aber die gesamte Epidermis ist doch gar nicht durchblutet und hat somit mit dem restlichen Körper auch so gut wie keinen Kontakt.

Bei Funktionieren unseres Immunsystems ist das Vorhandensein von Blut nicht alles. Die Epidermis enthält mehr Immunzellen als unser Blut und ist keineswegs so statisch wie man sich das allgemein vorstellt. Im Gegenteil: über unsere Haut bekomme ich einen wesentlich schnelleren Zugang zu unserem Immunsystem als über Blut.

Wie funktioniert dieser schnellere Zugang?

Alle Zellen in der Epidermis sind immunkompetent, sind also eigentlich schon unser Immunsystem. Darüber hinaus gibt es spezielle bewegliche Zelltypen wie z.B. die Langerhanszelle, die in den äußeren Regionen der Epidermis platziert, nur darauf wartet, fremde Stoffe zu erkennen und sie so schnell wie möglich im nächstgelegenen Lymphknoten zu präsentieren, damit eine Abwehrreaktion eingeleitet werden kann. Schnell bedeutet hier unter 4 Minuten, so schnell wie Blut dieselben Stoffe gar nicht transportieren kann.

Das bedeutet, dass alle Stoffe, mit denen wir Kontakt auf und in der Haut haben, fast unmittelbar Kontakt mit unserem Immunsystem haben?

Das ist richtig. Unsere Immunsystem beurteilt unseren Kon­takt nach außen fast in "Echtzeit". Manchmal erfolgt die Reaktion unmittelbar und sofort, manchmal an anderer Stelle verzögert.

Dafür muss man wissen, dass unser Immunsystem im ständigen Austausch mit dem Hormon- und Nervensystem steht.

Wenn zum Beispiel aus rein „kosmetischen“ Gründen die

Haut aufgehellt werden soll (Pigmentflecken), wird u.a. die Melaninausschüttung der Melanozyten verhindert. Was reine „Kosmetik“ sein soll, ist ein eklatanter Eingriff in das Hormonsystem des Proopio melano cortin Komplex. Die verminderte Melaninausschüttung vermindert die Leptin gesteuerte Gewichtsregulation, es kommt zu Übergewicht, auch die Endorphine werden gestört, es kommt zu Depressionen - die Nebennierenhormone werden gestört und die Infektabwehr vermindert sich – und dies alles nur mit Kosmetikanwendungen in der Epidermis.

Und was bedeutet das für Ihre Arbeit?

Wenn man dies weiß, muss man sich Gedanken machen, welche Nebenwirkungen Substanzen haben, die man auf die Haut aufbringt. Meiner Meinung nach ist ein sehr hoher Wissensstand nötig, um die Haut wirklich zu pflegen – im Sinne einer wirklichen Verbesserung. Täglich werden neue Erkenntnisse zu den Abläufen und den Zusammenhängen auf und in unserer Haut publiziert. Für einen einzelnen Menschen ist es fast unmöglich, immer auf dem neusten Stand zu sein, deshalb ist es schön in einer Familienfirma zu arbeiten, in der wir uns täglich austauschen, diskutieren, streiten und den richtigen Weg suchen. Denn wir sind uns unserer hohen Verantwortung bewusst, unseren Kunden einen, wie meine Oma es nannte, sicheren und sanften Weg in der Pflege zu ermöglichen.

In der Kosmetik bezeichnet man üblicherweise als Regeneration, wenn neue Zellen gebildet werden.

Entweder wird die Mitoserate erhöht, also die Zellteilung beschleunigt, mit dem Argument dass ältere Zellen sich langsamer teilen. Oder man sorgt dafür, dass sich eine neue Haut bildet. In beiden Fällen involviert man das Immunsystem entweder über Reizung oder aber über Verletzung. Üblicherweise erfolgen die Verletzungen durch zum Beispiel Peelings, Verätzung durch Alpha Hydroxysäuren, Mikroneedeling.

Gerne werden auch Fremdstoffe in die Haut eingeschleust, man benutzt Schleusermoleküle wie Liposome oder man zerstört die Barrierefunktion der Haut mit zum Beispiel hoher Konzentration an Glyzerin, damit die Wirkstoffe tief in die Haut eindringen.

Alles, was nicht haut- oder körperidentisch ist muss von unserem Immunsystem eliminiert werden. Die dabei entstehenden Kollateralschäden führen zu einer verstärkten Zellteilung.

Die neu gebildeten Zellen erreichen dann vorzeitig die oberen Hautschichten und bewirken so, dass kurzfristig der "schöne Schein" einer verjüngten Haut entsteht. Vielleicht ist das die Ursache, dass diese Methoden in der Kosmetik immer noch angewendet werden.

Dieses System, welches regelmäßig angewendet wird, beinhaltet gravierende Denkfehler.

Das Zellteilungspotential unserer Zellen ist endlich. Bei jeder Zellteilung verkürzt sich das Telomer (sozusagen der Zeitgeber bei Zellteilungen, oft auch als Zündschnur bezeichnet) der Erbsubstanz der sich teilenden Zelle, so dass jede neue Zelle auf dem Weg der Alterung ein Stück nach vorne gegangen ist. Mit jeder neuen Zelle haben wir eine biologisch ältere als zuvor.

Die Regeneration über Zellteilung führt also in Wirklichkeit zu vorzeitiger Hautalterung.

Die Involvierung des Immunsystems führt im besten Fall zu Allergien.

Speziell die Krankheit AIDS hat uns gezeigt, dass das Immunsystem unter Dauerstress Fehler macht. Diese können zur Konsequenz haben, dass neben Allergien auch Autoimmunerkrankungen und Krebs entstehen können.

Daher verfolgen wir bei der Regeneration ein ganz anderes Konzept: Anstatt die Mitoserate zu beschleunigen, unterstützen wir die Haut mit unserer "aktiven Regeneration" mit hautidentischen Inhaltsstoffen. Zum Beispiel mit einer Zellnährlösung – wie sie sonst verwendet wird um Epidermis für Transplantate wachsen zu lassen – bieten wir den Hautzellen alle niedermolekularen Substanzen, die sie brauchen, um sich zu reparieren.

Diese kleinen Moleküle – Aminosäuren, Elektrolyte, Vitamine unter vielen anderen – bezieht unsere Haut normalerweise über die Blutbahn. Da die Epidermis nicht durchblutet ist, kommen sie über Osmose und Konzentrationsabgleich an ihren Zielort. Das heißt, es kommen immer nur die Moleküle an die Orte der Haut, wo ihre Konzentration niedrig ist. Von der Blutbahn wandern sie aus der Dermis in die Epidermis ein. Wir bieten diese kleinen Moleküle der Epidermis von oben der aktiven Regeneration an, eingebettet zum Beispiel in die Cremegrundlage. Von dort gelangen sie wiederum über den Konzentrationsabgleich an die Stellen der Haut, wo sie gebraucht werden, ohne das Immunsystem zu tangieren.

So wollen wir jeder Hautzelle ihre höchste Lebenszeit ermöglichen und vorzeitige Hautalterung durch verstärkte Zellteilung verhindern.

FEELING COMFORTABLE IN ONE’S OWN SKIN!

In Part Three about the journey of the extraordinary German Black Forest-based cosmetics company Rosel Heim, ART OF introduces readers to Dr Nana Heim, the chemist of the family. We ask her about her thoughts on the skin and our immune system: Dr Heim, you did your doctoral thesis on structural elucidation and its subsequent enantiomerically pure total synthesis in the working group of the renowned Prof. Gerhard Qumkert specialising in natural product synthesis and photochemistry. A career in drug research would have been inevitable?

Actually yes, but then near the end of my doctoral thesis a completely new disease emerged: AIDS. It turned out that the sufferers did not die from the virus but from their immune systems, unable to protect and defend them against even banal infections. This had us scientists realise that we knew next to nothing about our immune system – its interplay with the hormonal and nervous system hasn’t let me go ever since.

But that doesn’t explain why you now find yourself in a cosmetics company.

Yes, but to this day most people are not aware that our skin is part of the immune system. This means that all cells of the epidermis represent the immune system’s ID card. They’re an integral part of it. Incidentally, the epidermis has on average, twice as many T cells than in blood.

But surely that does not hold true for the topmost skin layer that cosmetics focus on. Aren’t these dead cells?

The cells of the outer boundary layer of our skin that constitutes the epidermis are as dead as women after menopause. Not that I would describe women in the menopause as “dead” or as dead tissue. It’s more about the cells there no longer having a nucleus and because of this, can therefore no longer divide or reproduce. Still, it’s been proven that they can do so when triggered by contact with a foreign cell. The “dead” cell, it can afford an important contribution to our defence against pathogens.

If the epidermis as a whole is not supplied with blood. Surely this means it has almost no contact with the rest of the body?

When it comes to the functioning of our immune system, the presence of blood is not everything. The epidermis contains more immune cells than our blood and is by no means as

static as one might think. The skin gives me far quicker access to the immune system than I would have via blood.

How does this quicker access work?

All cells in the epidermis are immunocompetent, have a normal immune response. The Langerhans cell in the outer region waits to recognize foreign substances, quickly manifests these in a lymph node so that a defence mechanism can be initiated.

It can take under four minutes. Not even blood can do it that fast.

So anything in contact with our skin is in contact with our immune system?

That’s right. Our skin is our real time barometer of our contact to the outside world. Reaction times to this contact can vary.

There is a constant exchange between our immune system and the hormonal and nervous system.

For example, if for purely ‘cosmetic’ reasons skin is to be lightened where for argument’s sake pigment spots have occurred, the secretion of melanin from melanocytes is prevented. Supposed ‘cosmetic’ intervention then becomes blatant interference with the relevant hormonal system, in this case the Pro-opiomelanocortin Complex. Diminished melanin secretion reduces leptin-controlled weight regulation and obesity occurs. Endorphins are disrupted and depression occurs. The adrenal hormones find themselves out of whack and the defence against infections is overturned; with all this happening from a seeming inconsequential cosmetic application to the skin.

And what does this mean for your work?

Knowing this, you have to think about what side effects substances have that are applied to the skin. In my opinion, a very high level of knowledge is crucial really to be able to care for the skin – to the extent of a real improvement. New insights to the processes and connections that our skins engage in emerge daily. It’s almost impossible for one person to keep up to date always, that's why it’s nice to work in a family business where we exchange, discuss and debate, to find the right path for the future of cosmetics. We are truly aware of our great duty to provide our customers, a safe and gentle journey in all things cosmetic.

The cosmetics industry likes to refer to the situation in which the formation of new cells occurs as regeneration. Either the mitosis rate is increased, i.e. cell division accelerates with the argument that the splitting of older cells occurs more slowly.

Or you can ensure that you have new skin form. In both cases the immune system is involved either through irritation or through injury. The injuries for example are usually caused by peelings, chemical burns caused by alpha hydroxyl-acids also known as AHAS, and microneedling.

Foreign substances are also often introduced into the skin by using smuggler molecules like liposomes, or the barrier function of the skin is destroyed with high-concentrate glycerine for example, so that the active ingredients penetrate deep into the skin.

Everything that is not skin-identical or body-identical must be eliminated by our immune system. The resulting collateral damage leads to increased cell division. The newly-formed cells then reach the upper layers of the skin prematurely, creating that sought-after ‘beautiful glow’ of rejuvenated skin, but which is short-lived. Presumably it’s the reason why these methods are still applied in the cosmetics industry.

lecular substances they need to repair themselves. These small molecules – amino acids, electrolytes and vitamins, among many others – our skin normally receives via the blood­stream.

Because the epidermis does not have a blood supply, they arrive via osmosis and undergo a concentration adjustment in their destination location in the body. That means only the molecules come to the places on the skin where their concentration is low. From the blood­stream, they migrate from the dermis into the epidermis.

We offer these small molecules to the epidermis from above for active regeneration, embedded e.g. in the cream base.

From there they pass over the areas of the skin and in the required concentration adjustments thereof, to where they are needed without affecting the immune system.

It is our mission to give every skin cell its maximum lifespan and impede premature skin aging due to increased cell division.

This system, which is regularly applied, contains serious errors of reasoning.

The cell division potential of our cells is finite. With each cell division, the telomere – or the timer during cell division so to speak that can also be referred to as a fuse – shortens the genetic material of the dividing cell. This means that each new cell has moved a little further along the aging process. With every new cell we have a biologically older one than before.

Which means regeneration through cell division actually leads to premature skin aging.

• In the best case scenario, involving the immune system can lead to allergies.

• AIDS in particular has shown us that the immune system makes mistakes under constant stress. This can have as a consequence, that alongside allergies, autoimmune diseases and cancer can arise.

That's why we take a completely different approach to regeneration: Instead of accelerating the rate of mitosis, we support the skin with ‘active regeneration’ using skin-identical ingredients. For example, in much the same way as we offer clients a cell culture media which is ordinary used for epidermis cells to grow for transplants, we provide the skin cells with all the low-mo-

THE PEAK Peak – zu deutsch der Gipfel – ist nicht nur im Sinne des Urlaubsglücks gemeint, sondern deutet auf die vielen Gipfel Jen­s eits der 3000 – 3500 Meter, die dem Gast hier hochalpines Bergglück verheissen.

It took many years of planning for Sonja and Albert Gilb to realise their life’s dream Chaletdorf Alpzitt. Today a ‘village’ of some nine chalets and numerous holiday units are the end-product bearing testimony to their philosophy of life: To be real and authentic!

Timber was the main raw material used, making for unpretentious, cozy interiors enhanced with luxury elements. Each chalet has its own small private spa in the form of a sauna, an outdoor hot tub and a rain shower. The dark stone pine-scented woods make for a rustic and genuine feel and are contrasted by freestanding bathtubs with mountain views and luxurious stone tiles, while a fireplace or fire pit make for wintry feel good comfort. Heute erstrahlt das HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio in neuem Glanz, eingebettet in die traumhafte Naturkulisse in Balderschwang im bayrischen Oberallgäu. Die frei gewordene Energie hat man genutzt, um ganzheitliche Erholungskonzepte aufzubauen, welche den Menschen neue Impulse mit auf den Weg nach Hause geben. Das stille Hochtal, umgeben von majestätischen Bergen, wird genutzt, um Kraft zu tanken, Selbstachtsamkeit zu üben, Lebendigkeit zu fühlen.

Basiszutaten sind Rohrzucker, Stein- und Meersalz. Weizen wird größtenteils durch Dinkel ersetzt. Danach bleibt viel Energie für Aktivität: das Langlauf-Eldorado mit über 100km Loipen ist direkt vor der Haustür. Das Winter- und Schneeschuhwandern durch glitzernde Schneekristalle passt perfekt zur Achtsamkeit.

Der Charme alter Mauern Die Geschichte des Hauses beginnt mit der Verleihung des Marktrechts im Jahre 1303. Händler und Reisende kamen in den Ort und fanden im Gasthof “Zum Grauen Bären” Unterkunft und Verpflegung. 1745 gelangte das Haus in Familienbesitz und wird heute von Franz Ladinser und Tochter Verena in neunter und zehnter Generation geführt.

Grüner Luxus Garten Eden. Hier stimmt einmal der Werbespruch mit der Realität überein. Familie Theiner lebt biolgische Landwirtschaft (nach Demeter) und Nachhaltigkeit seit über 35 Jahren, gehört zu den Pionieren im Südtirol und verschmolz diese 2009 in Gargazon bei Meran mit einem äusserst reizvollen und im heutigen Verständnis bio-luxuriösen Hotelanwesen.

Erbaut wurde nach strengen baubiolgischen Richtlinien in massiver Holzbauweise ohne Vernagelung und Verleimung. Die Zimmer – genannt Garten der Träume – wurden elektrosmogarm mit metallfreien Betten, Naturmatratzen, Bio-Bettwäsche und duftendem Zierbenholz gestaltet, welches erwiesenermassen gesunden Schlaf fördert und die Herzfrequenz senkt. Für ein angenehmes Raumklima sorgt eine Wandkühlung im Sommer bzw. Wandheizung im Winter, welche in einer Lehmwand integriert ist! Luftwärmepumpe, Solarthermie reduzieren den Energiebedarf.

Im Garten der Genüsse, sprich der Kulinarik, achtet man auf natürliche Aromen und regionale Zutaten. Diese stammen überwiegend vom hauseigenen 70’000m2 umfassenden Bergerhof – biodynamisch, saisonal. Küchenchef Domenico Savino erfüllt (fast) alle Essenswünsche, seien sie vegetarisch, vegan oder auf Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeiten und Allergien ausgerichtet.

Als erstes Hotel Italiens wurde dem Biorefugium das Zertifikat „Von Demeter empfohlen“ verliehen. Draussen mischen sich Kräuteroase mit Weinreben. The Theiner family, already upholding the pledge for more than three decades, in 2009 turned their smallholding in Gargazzone near Meran, into a hotel. A Garden of Eden of sorts. Strict ecobuilding guidelines mean there’s no evidence of nailing and gluing in the solid timber structure. The rooms are fondly called rooms of dreams, with low ElectroSmog thanks to metal-free beds, natural mattresses, organic bed linen and fragrant ornamental wood. This makes for proven healthier sleep and lowered heart rates.

Wer den Edelweiss-Stil liebt, kann sich im neuen Shop „Eyecatcher“-Acessoires mit nach Hause nehmen.

Außergewöhnlich auch die klassisch-regionale Küche auf höchstem Niveau (Stefan Reichel im Edelweiss-Restaurant) und als Pop-up das „TIAN am Berg“ mit der ersten vegetarischen, 3 Hauben gekrönten Kulinarik in Zürs. Die fantasievollen Kreationen von Paul Ivić sind Stern- und Hauben-dekoriert und spielen in der weltweiten Veggie-Liga an höchster Stelle mit. Lage? Richtig: Perfektes Ski in, Ski out am Arlberg!

Die Trittkopfbahn liegt mit 305 Top-Pistenkilometern vor der Haustür. Und wer mal so richtig feiern will, sollte den Platz im legendären Flexenhäusl zum Fondue-Abend mit „Nachspiel“ frühzeitig buchen.

That’s the motto for the extraordinary Hotel Edelweiss in Austria’s Arlberg area.

Here you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d walked straight into the set of The Jungle Book when you thought you were in the midst of a popular winter resort with the Trittkopfbahn aerial cableway right on your doorstep.

Nowadays the first ski hotel in Zürs (1856) is very different to any other, more courageous and very hip. Nothing here can be described as ordinary be it the themed décor in your room; or the animal parade of tigers, zebras and flamingos that will ‘watch’ you eat.

There is also certainly nothing ordinary about the Edelweiss Restaurant where Stefan Reichel conjures up classical regional cuisine at the highest level, while top chef Paul Ivić’s pop-up TIAN am Berg has earned him three chef hats for its vegetarian fare in a first for Zürs. Actually unsurprisingly so, given how highly the veggie league worldwide ranks his daring Michelin Star creations.
