From the Director: Dear Library Community, I would like to introduce myself to those of you who haven’t already met me. My name is Jane Jenkins and I am the new Director at the Green Hills Public Library District. I worked at GHPLD for 14 years before working at the Oak Lawn Public Library as the Department Head for Customer Service. I am delighted to be back and reacquainting myself with the staff and the community. Please feel free to stop by and see me any time you are in the Library. It’s a great place to be! September is a busy month for parents and students as back-to-school preparations take place. Studies show that children who are

read to in the home and who use the Library perform better in school. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when GHPLD joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all — a free library card. Your GHPLD Library card allows access to a large number of databases including Tutor.com, a great resource for students needing homework help. Tutor.com is available from home or in the Library using your GHPLD Library card. You can always visit the Library for materials and programs and meet with our knowledgeable library staff. We have a fantastic line up of programs scheduled for September and October, including One Tough Cookie with Mindy Segal, Lunch and a Movie, Family Bingo, and Incredible Bats. Take a look inside to see what we have to offer!

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month! It’s time to get the smartest card of all, a library card! C elebrate Library Card Sign-up Month with us during the entire month of September. In addition to the many programs and services that GHPLD offers, we also provide access to our 24/7 Library. D ownload eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, music, movies, and more with our various platforms. Learn a new language with Mango and build your technology skills with Lynda.com. The possibilities are endless!

What do I need to get a Library card? Two proofs of residency within the Library District are required, including one photo ID. Applicants under 18 require a parent or legal guardian to be present.

Every new registrant will receive a scratch oﬀ card for a chance to win prizes!

New and Improved Sound and Video Editing Room

Crochet for Charity

Have you used it yet? This unique space allows users to creatively express themselves through digital videos, music, photography, websites, graphic design, podcasts, presentations, and other forms of digital media. T he room is located in the Digital Lounge on the ground ﬂoor of the Library and is open to Library District residents, students, and business owners. For more information, call the Digital Lounge at (708) 598-8446 ext. 113.

The Library will soon be starting a Crochet for Charity program. Patrons will be able to check out bags with all of the materials, including patterns, and then will have a specified time to create their crochet design which will be donated to local shelters. We are asking for yarn donations to help get the program started. Donations can be made at the Circulation or Information Desk on the second ﬂoor of the Library. Any color is acceptable, but the material must be machine washable. If you have any questions, please contact Sara Kennedy at (708) 598-8446 ext. 115.

Electronics Recycling Drive

Q&A Night for Older Adults

Saturday, September 12 • 10am–1pm Safely recycle your electronics at the Library. AVA E-Recycling will be here to take your unwanted electronics. AVA assures all data is destroyed off personal electronics and your information destruction is a top priority. Oversize items, tube televisions, and tube monitors cannot be accepted. Visit avarecycling.com to learn more about recycling electronics and for a complete list of what can be recycled.

Mindy Segal is serious about cookies. Meet Mindy, a James Beard Award-winning chef and the owner of the popular Chicago restaurant Mindy’s HotChocolate, and learn her new, edgier take on baking cookies. Mindy will be here to talk about her book Cookie Love and of course we will have samples of her cookies! Copies of her book will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow. Attendees will also leave with a handout to help build the framework for a successful resume.

Mexican Chicago: A Story in Pictures Thursday, September 17 • 7pm Storyteller Rita Arias Jirasek will be presenting stories of the Mexican experience in the Midwest through photographs. T he audience will hear stories of many who have lived local Mexican history firsthand and about the important places of Chicago in the Mexican community.

Savvy Women Investing Tuesday, September 22 • 7pm Karre Parker takes learning to a deeper level by teaching women how to take the strengths they already have and apply these skills in managing their money. K arre explains how stress and anxiety can be reduced while providing women with more comfort and confidence in the decision-making process.

Legislator Meet and Greet

Technology Classes Intro to Microsoft Word 2010* Tuesday, September 15 9:00–10:30am This hands-on class will teach you how to create a new document as well as how to utilize the functions of the ribbon, edit text, print, and save a document.

Swing by the Library to meet some of your local representatives! State Senator Bill Cunningham (18th District) and State Representative Kelly Burke (36th District) will be here to answer your questions.

Illinois Ghosts and the Afterlife Friday, October 9 • 7pm Author, investigator, and lecturer for Unexplained Research LLC, Terry Fisk, will be at the Library to share his knowledge of ghosts and the afterlife. This session examines some of the haunted locations in Illinois personally investigated by Mr. Fisk. He will share photos, case histories, eyewitness accounts, and ghost lore.

Computer Basics* Tuesday, October 20 9:00–10:30am This hands-on class is for beginners. W e will start with teaching you how to use a mouse and keyboard. O ther topics include minimizing/maximizing windows, deleting items, and Internet searching.

Book discussions will take place on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm at different locations around the community. Copies of the books will be available at the Circulation Desk one month prior to each meeting for GHPLD cardholders. Adults of all ages are welcome to participate!

Palos Reads returns again at Palos Country Club, 13100 Southwest Hwy., Orland Park. This year’s book selection is Summer of the Dead by Julia Keller. Ms. Keller spent 12 years as a reporter and editor for the Chicago Tribune, where she won a Pulitzer Prize. She was also a recipient of a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University. She will discuss her Bell Elkins mystery series, including the soon to be published Last Ragged Breath, all of which are set in Acker’s Gap, West Virginia. This event is sponsored by Palos Fine Arts in partnership with the local libraries of: Green Hills Public Library District, Palos Park Public Library, and Palos Heights Public Library. Copies of her books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow.

Teen/Tween Programs Teen/Tween Spa Night* Tuesday, September 15 • 6pm Come to the Library for a night of D.I.Y. fun and relaxation! We will be making scented bath bombs and sugar lip scrubs. Registration is limited to 24. Ages 10–17.

Sea Beast Puppet Company* Wednesday, September 23 • 6pm Sea Beast Puppet Company’s “Surf and Turf”. Come rediscover the classic stories of Stone Soup and Rudyard Kipling’s How the Whale Got His Throat in this lively and exciting production. “Surf and Turf” utilizes puppetry, music, and audience interaction.
