The Library now offers two media:scape rooms, each providing an inviting, high-performance space that is specifically designed to support group work. These rooms include technology that allows users to connect up to six different devices to a large, shared monitor, for creative and meaningful collaboration. What’s Our Staff Reading? “I adored The Girls at the Kingfisher Club, Genevieve Valentine’s retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses set during 1920’s Prohibition. Joseph Hamilton’s twelve daughters are embarrassing reminders of his lack of a son, so he keeps them sequestered away within the house he rules with an iron fist. Hamilton is confident that the girls are entirely cut off from the world; however, a rumor is circulating about twelve mysterious young women, who dance each night away at Manhattan speakeasies. This novel still has a fairytale essence to it, but at its heart, it’s a complex story about independence, dependence, and sisterhood.”

We will be viewing the movie Unbroken (since we’ve already read the book)! Coffee and tea will be provided.
Thursday, June 11 • 10am We will be making our own terrariums! Bringing your own glass jar to use is optional; all materials will be provided. Registration for this session is required.
Computer Basics* Tuesday, May 19 • 9am This is a hands-on class. Topics that will be covered include basic functions such as minimizing/maximizing windows, deleting items, and basic Internet searching. Basic keyboard and mouse skills are required.
Container Gardens* Thursday, May 7 • 7pm Container and window box gardens are a wonderful way to bring beauty and even a little whimsy to a condominium balcony, patio, or entry way. The Prairie Godmothers reveal the secrets behind earth friendly, low cost, and uncommon plants and planters that are sure to be showstoppers.
ANTI-hero Films
An antihero is someone who proves himself or herself, despite not having courage or other heroic qualities. These films display what it truly means to be a not-so-typical hero in the face of adversity.

Understanding Early Memory Loss* Saturday, June 20 • 10:30am The onset of early memory loss creates many questions and challenges for both the person experiencing memory loss and their supporters. This program provides an overview of memory loss, common signs and symptoms, and the diagnostic process, and will focus on coping strategies and identifying helpful resources. This program is co-sponsored by the Greater Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Book discussions will take place on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm at different locations around the community. Copies of the books will be available at the Circulation Desk one month prior to each meeting for GHPLD cardholders. Adults of all ages are welcome to participate.

Adult Programs Local Author Spotlight: J.A. Templin Thursday, June 4 • 7pm Former Hickory Hills resident and author J.A.Templin will be signing copies of his new book, Shadows, Dreams and other Nightmares, at the Library. He will be talking about his writing process, how he got into writing horror stories, and more.
CST Bus Trip* Sunday, June 7 • 11:30am We’ll be taking a trip into the city to see Sense and Sensibility at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. W e’ll get to hear a brief history on Austen’s masterpiece, and then we’ll sit back and watch the regency musical. T rip fee is $30 per person (cash or check, please) and registration begins in person at the Information Desk on Friday, May 15 at 9am.
Superheroes and Patriots:
Comic Book Propaganda Revealed* Thursday, June 18 • 7pm Often dismissed as a child occupation, comics are far more influential and reflective of American culture than given credit for. They often promote values and social good will while at times vilifying elements of American culture, such as drug use or nuclear armaments. Regardless of their politics, they have been a consistent and prevalent source of propaganda over the last century. Learn how superheroes, from Spider-Man to Superman, have commented on and shaped American public opinion and influenced American policies. This event is being produced in part by the Illinois Humanities Council’s Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, a program that provides organizations statewide with affordable, entertaining, and thought-provoking humanities events for their communities.
Family Programs Farmers Market Tote Design* Saturday, May 9 • 11am Hit the farmers market in style! Bring the family to decorate a canvas tote bag. We will use real fruits and veggies and stamp their shapes in paint. This could get messy, please dress accordingly. All ages welcome. Registration limited to 30 families.
Traveling World of Reptiles* Thursday, May 14 • 6pm Dave DiNaso is returning to the Library with an up close, live experience about reptiles and amphibians from around the world. Registration is limited to 90.

Volunteer Opportunity! We need volunteers to help run our Summer Reading Program. This is a good way to earn all of the community service hours that you need. You will sign up for a weekly time slot or slots. Parental permission is required. All volunteers must be at least 13 years old. You can sign up at the Youth Services Desk starting Friday, May 1.
