Nowhere to go but up for Cocke County program looking to break long drought

NEWPORT — There weren’t an abundance of positives to take away from the Cocke County High School football team’s 2025 season, but one clear one does stand out. There is vast room for improvement for a Fighting Cocks team that has to replace quite a bit of production from a season ago while trying to snap a 13game winless streak that dates back to Oct. 4, 2024, and included an 0-10 record last fall. Second-year coach Daniel Dudley, his staff, and a 56-man roster have been hard at work this preseason to get the program headed in the direction they want to go. The Fighting Cocks’ identity, as it often is, will be built in the trenches and with the running game again this fall. For a team that lost its top five rushers a season ago, particularly Eli Roberts (60-489-2), Daniel Price (125466-5), and Timmy Field (70-319-3), Cocke County will go as the offensive line of senior left tackle Andy Jones, sophomore left guard Ben Lewis, junior center Chase Burgin, junior right guard Landen Fine, and sophomore right tackle Chris Fields goes. “I think if our offensive line continues to develop like they have in the preseason, I think that’s going to give us a chance to win,” Dudley said. “Any time you can control the line of scrimmage up front, it kind of helps things. I think, at times, in the preseason, we’ve shown that we can block some people. “I like the way our backs are running. We’re pretty deep at B-back with Jaquel Ladd, Tanner Mantooth, and Billy Smith. They’re probably going to get the bulk of those carries and they’ve had a good preseason. If we can eliminate some of the turnovers, some of the fumbles, I think we’re going to be OK.” While many of the faces at running back are new, Cocke County does return its starting quarterback for most of last season, sophomore

Football Preview Braelyn Talley. He completed 35 of 69 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman, also tallying 44 rushing attempts. “We’re going to be a run-heavy offense,” Dudley said. “I think that anybody who knows what we do knows that’s how we’re going to operate. I’ve really enjoyed watching (quarterback) Braelyn Talley mature this offseason. He understands what we want to do. Offensively, he values the football and has done a pretty good job of taking care of the football. “We’re going to try to control the clock and keep our defense off the field. We want to shorten the game a little bit. We’ve got to be a little more efficient in our pass game, making sure that when we do throw it, we’re hitting our receivers and the receivers are running good routes and, also, the line is protecting like they need to.” Porter, a senior; Smith, a junior; and Mantooth, a freshman will be complemented in the ground game by A-backs Isaiah Moore, Cairo Gayton, Skyler Kyker, and Elijah Hill, as well as Brayden Laws in a utility role. When Cocke County does pass, the top pass-catchers will include seniors Romon Hazelwood and Carmelo Hurst and junior Grayson Blazer, along with Mantooth, a freshman. The Cocke County defense is looking for a rebound effort after surrendering 35 or more points on seven occasions last season. To help streamline things, don’t expect anything too fancy on that side of the ball this year. “We’re going to be pretty simple, defensively,” Dudley said. “I just feel like when you’re simplistic defensively, it allows you to play fast. We’re going to be a base four-down front. We’re going to play a lot of quarters Cover 3. What we’re trying to do is not give up chunk plays.

The Fighting Cocks’ offense huddles up during a game last year.

“We want to make a high school offense drive the ball on us and not give up chunk plays. I thought last year, we gave up too many big plays. The biggest thing when we evaluated it in the offseason is we had a lot of alignment issues. So, we’ve made a big point of emphasis on making sure we get lined up, make sure we run to the football, and once we get there, tackle it.” Defensive linemen for Cocke County will include Jordyn Carter, Kaiden Fine, Sky Fine, Elijah Mason, a freshman. At the linebacker spots, the Fighting Cocks will employ Mantooth, Ladd,

Josue Benites, Nathan Durkee, Peyton Phillips, and freshman Isaac Hill. Those listed at defensive back for Cocke County include Romon Hazelwood, Blazer, Moore, Hurst, Gayton, Smith, Laws, Kyker, Rylan Parton, Eli Sisk, Logan Mantooth, Brody Holloway, B.B. Bowlin, Eastyn Parker, Ayden Cureton, Elijah Hill, Simei Valazquez, Brentley Hazelwood, Aden Hendrickson, and Jorge Zambrano. The special teams unit will consist of Benites at placekicker and punter, Ladd at long snapper, Talley at holder, and Moore and Parton on return duties.

In Region 1-5A, Cocke County will be looking to exit the basement of the standings. The first team on the list to catch will be Daniel Boone, which picked up its lone overall win against the Fighting Cocks last season. Morristown West won two region games, David Crockett claimed three region victories, Tennessee was victorious four times in region play, and Sevier County was the undefeated Region 1-5A champion, going 13-2 overall and reaching the fifth round of the state playoffs. Cocke County opens the season at home on Friday night, hosting rival Jefferson County in a non-region bout.

JOHN SUDBRINK/NEWPORT PLAIN TALK

The Eagles prepare to take the field versus West Greene.

Cosby brings lofty expectations into season on verge of playoff breakthrough JUSTIN EPLEY | Sports Editor

COSBY — The Cosby High School football program is building toward a crescendo. Now in Year 4 of the Levi Cooper Era, the Eagles have improved from 1-9 in 2023 to 8-3 and a Region 1-1A championship in 2024 and made it back-to-back state playoff appearances in 2025. The only thing missing is a postseason win. With the amount of experience coming back this fall, now feels like it could be the time. Senior running back David Baker returns after amassing 1,183 yards and 15 touchdowns last fall. Leading receiver Cornelius Carr, who reeled in 14 passes for 237 yards and three TDs is now a senior. Junior utility man Gage McCarty is back after leading the Eagles in passing (37 of 87, 605 yards, four TDs) and finishing in the top three in both rushing (60-361-7) and receiving (15-135-1) in 2025. Six of the team’s top 10 tacklers from last year remain in the fold, including Bo Cutshaw (70), McCarty (47), Baker (32), Jonah Saul (31), Jackson Brannon (29), and Carr (28). That sounds like plenty to work with for Cooper and his staff. “I think one of the biggest things we’ve got going for us is our depth on both sides,” Cooper said. “We’ve got 18 seniors on our football team. We’ve got another 10 juniors who have played a lot of football. So, our depth is, I think, going to be a huge factor for us this year. “It’s kind of been a long time coming. A lot of these kids who are playing right now as seniors had to play as freshmen that first year I was here. So, you come in and you can tell they were really talented football players. We kind of had to throw them into the fire early, so they’ve been at this a long time. That experience that they’ve gained over the past few years is going to be invaluable.” The Eagles appear to have the ability to be dynamic in both the running and passing games this fall and Cooper wants to maintain balance offensively to take advantage of both. While Baker is the clear lead back and Carr is the team’s top receiver, Austin-East transfer Spencer Moore and fellow senior Matthew McMahan, who has worked his way back from a long-term knee injury last season, could share time at quarterback or one could emerge. “We always strive to be balanced and that’s what we always talk about,” Cooper said. “I don’t necessarily define balance as throw it 20 times and run it 20 times or whatever, but I think balance is when we need to line up and be able to run the football, we can do that, and when we need to line up and be able to throw the football, we can do that. “Some nights, somebody is going to give you one look and one will be better than the other. But I just want for us to be balanced and be able to combat whatever the opposing team is trying to do to us. Just be able to line up and

Sophomore Malakhai Blanton and freshman Brantley Spann will back up the duo. In the backfield, Baker will continue to be the workhorse, but the Eagles have developed some other ball-carriers to serve as a change of pace, including speedy junior Noah Clark and physical sophomore Kris Higgs, who also is a defensive starter. Carr, who stands at 6-foot-4, will lead the receiving corps on the outside, along with McCarty in the slot. Seniors Cayden Byrd and Eli Gilliam and Blanton also will be targets in the passing game. Up front, the Eagles will be led by left tackle Kris Moss, left guard Aidan McGaha, center Jonathan Vinkowski, right guard Noah Saul, and right tackle Zach Messer. All five are seniors, giving

“We play a 3-3 stack and it’s not a typical front you usually here of,” Cooper said. “Everybody either talks about the 4-3 or the 3-4 or the nickel, but we play a 3-3 stack and it’s been really good to us the past few years. We try to highlight our linebacking corps and let those guys try to draw doubleteams and go make plays. “We kind of call it ‘chaos.’ We’ve got a lot of blitz packages out of it and different things that we can do. We want to play aggressive and play physical and create some turnovers, just as anybody else would. I really like our defense. They’ve done a tremendous job the past couple years. (Defensive coordinator Dearco) Nolan has done a good job.” That linebacker group is led by Cutshaw and Higgs, sophomores who Cooper said will rarely come off the field. Seniors Baker, Brannon, Malachi Atchley, and Matthew Webb and freshman Kade Norris also will rotate in at those spots. On the defensive line, the Eagles will depend on juniors Chance Hayes and Jacob Myers, senior Braden Jenkins. Saul, Moss, and McGaha are expected to be rotating two-way linemen for Cosby. Sophomore Tristan Keller and junior Cooper Cole also will be in the mix. In the secondary, Byrd and Gilliam are the likely starting cornerbacks and McMahan is slotted to start at safety. Blanton, Moore, Carr, and senior Kevin Baxter are other DBs to keep an eye on this season. As for special teams, Moore will kick off and punt. The placekicking operation will including Atchley at long snapper, McMahan at holder, and the winner of a competition between Moore, McCarty, Brannon, and freshman Santi Peralta at placekicker. McCarty and Carr will handle kickoff and punt return duties. Cumulatively, the Eagles hope it’s enough to reclaim the top spot in Region 1-1A after being dethroned by Hampton a season ago and to finally grab that elusive playoff victory. “That’s been the goal since Day 1,” Cooper said. “We want to compete for region championships. We want to advance in the postseason. “We’re not going to shy away from it. That’s what we want our program to be about.” Cosby opens the season in non-region play on the road at West Greene on Friday night.

Year 4 of rebirth PARROTTSVILLE — Four years into rebuilding the Parrottsville Middle School football program from scratch, head coach Brent Ward is seeing some dividends. The Parrotts went into last season excited about a bigger roster. Now, some of that talent has experience to bring back this fall. It showed in the season-opener on Thursday as Parrottsville dominated Surgoinsville, winning 40-14 at home. “They’re hard-nosed, gritty, show up ready to work, respectful, disciplined, and eager,” Ward said of his players. “Some are new to the sport, some of them are in their first year with me, and

Evans, King set

for another season broadcasting football on WLIK JUSTIN EPLEY | Sports Editor

NEWPORT — When high school football season rolls around, Brian Evans and Mel King are fixtures at Cocke County and Cosby games. Evans returns as the voice of the Fighting Cocks and King will reprise his role as the voice of the Eagles as Newport’s WLIK radio station is set for another season of prep football broadcasts in the area. Each week, Evans brings the action from Cocke County games to the airwaves on 97.9 FM, 1270 AM, and wlik. net Stream 1 while King’s accounts of Cosby contests can be heard on wlik.net Stream 2. Both are excited to see what’s in store for this season, which begins Friday evening as Cocke County hosts rival Jefferson County and Cosby travels to West Greene, both for non-region action. Evans is ready to head into the booth at Larry Williams Stadium. “This is my 20-somethingth year broadcasting Cocke County games,” Evans said. “It’s been really fun. I’ve enjoyed it. … This year is a building year coming off of a winless season. We’ve got a lot of young talent, for sure. We’ve just got to put points on the board and stop the other team. “I’m excited. I’m always excited about every season, of course. Football gets everybody’s blood boiling if you’re from East Tennessee. Just football, in general, I’m ready for it to kick off and ready to go.” Likewise, King is ready to occupy his perch at Virgil Ball Stadium. “This season is a chance for Cosby to start being a program, not a team,” King said. “It’s the fourth year for Coach Levi

This Cosby program has almost completed the foundation. Eight local teams get final preseason tuneups at Cherokee jamboree JUSTIN EPLEY | Sports Editor

ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee High School may have been the host of Friday evening’s football jamboree, but the event had a distinct local flair. Eight local teams were in action at the final preseason tuneup, including both Cocke County and Cosby high schools, both high schools’ JV programs, the Cocke County middle school team, and three squads from the Cocke County youth program. The Fighting Cocks and Eagles won’t see each other in the regular season — as has been the case for a very long time — but local fans were able to get a small taste of red versus blue on the gridiron as the teams squared off with a 12-minute running clock. Cosby started off with a bang, taking the exhibition’s first play from scrimmage — following a Cocke County pass interference penalty — 55 yards to the end zone senior quarterback Spencer Moore hit classmate Cornelius Carr deep down the far sideline. The Eagles scored again near the end of the scrimmage as David Baker cashed in with a 1-yard TD run to close out a sixplay, 79-yard drive. Gage McCarty tacked on the two-point conversion on a pass from Moore to put Cosby ahead by the final margin, 14-0. Moore, who also had a 25-yard run, completed all three of his passes for 93 yards and the score, hitting Carr twice for 84 yards. McCarty had a 9-yard reception and Baker finished nine yards and the TD on three carries. Cayden Byrd recovered a fumble for the Cosby defense after Cocke County had driven to midfield on its first drive. After looking solid in a trio of scrimmages already this preseason, head coach Levi Cooper had more reasons to be happy Friday evening. “We wanted to come out here and look clean and execute,” Cooper said. “We had a couple penalties here and there that we need to get cleaned up, but I thought for the most part, offensively and defensively, we did a good job. We gave up a couple first downs defensively and then created a turnover. We were able to take that and turn it into points. “I’m really, really proud of the guys and how they came out tonight. All of them are chomping at the bit. We’re ready to play a real game. They came out focused and looked clean and played well.” Senior Tanner Mantooth did most of the damage for the Fighting Cocks’ offense, gaining 24 yards on five carries. Quarterback Braelyn Talley added a 13yard run and Isaiah Moore gained five yards on his lone attempt. Kaiden Fine and Sky Fine were impact players up front for the Cocke County defense. While there were positives to take away, the big passing play allowed and the turnover put a damper on the excitement for Fighting Cocks head coach Daniel Dudley, who noted similar problems in other scrimmages this preseason. “We have some young guys on the back end (of the defense) and we knew that,” Dudley said. “They’re going to continue to grow. They got tested tonight and kudos to Cosby because they attacked one of our weaknesses right now. We’ve got to coach those guys better and get

them better and we’ll do that. … And in our conference, we know what we’ve got to do — we’ve got to stop the run. That’s what this defense is geared to do. “Offensively, I thought we did what we’ve done all preseason. We moved the ball well and then we put it on the ground. It’s frustrating and we’re going to get that corrected, because I’ve not seen too many people stop our offense. I feel like we’ve stopped ourselves. But we’re going to keep working, control what we can control, and not worry about the rest.” Turnovers also were the story of the JV portion as Cosby’s drives, which went 33 yards in eight plays and 10 yards on five plays (including a holding penalty) ended in a lost fumble and turnover, respectively, and Cocke County lost a fumble on its first play from scrimmage. Nolan Gray and Isaac Hill had the takeaways for the JV Fighting Cocks while Robie Fish was credited with the fumble recovery for the JV Eagles. Matthew McMahan (1 for 2, 12 yards) and Malakhai Blanton (1 for 2, 25 yards) split quarterback duties for Cosby as Malachi Atchley had both receptions for 37 yards. McMahan (33 yards), Blanton (nine), and Kade Norris (three) registered one carry apiece for the JV Eagles. Quarterback Peyton Phillips ran twice for five yards for Cocke County and Grayson Blazer had a 7-yard run. In the middle school portion of the event, Cocke County scored the lone touchdown of its scrimmage as quarterback Jett Hembree dove in from two yards out as the final buzzer sounded. Hembree finished with six yards and the score on three carries and went 2 for 3 through the air for 38 yards, connecting with receivers Quinlan Ramsey (35 yards) and Blake Waters (three). Kevin Woods led in rushing with 23 yards on three carries and Covan Hurst ran three times for 15 yards. Defensively, Hembree had a goal-line interception for Cocke County and Hurst notched a tackle for loss. In the youth portion of the event, the Cocke County grass cutters had a 23-yard touchdown run on their lone possession and made two stops in the backfield

against Cherokee, the super grass cutters made three stops for loss and forced a fumble defensively while the offense made modest gains on the ground in a scoreless 10 minutes versus the hosts,
