Work continues at pace on our brand-new £40 million brewery at Suffolk Park - a major investment in the future of brewing and another proud moment in our long history in Bury St Edmunds.
We broke ground last summer and now the steel frame is up and the building is beginning to take shape, with construction on track for completion in 2027.
The new brewery will enable us to evolve our brewing operation to adapt to customers’ changing tastes, futureproofing its ability to brew the highest quality beer for future generations and create future-facing brewing roles. It will also improve the sustainability of the company’s brewing operations.
A key milestone this year is our partnership with BrauKon, the world‑leading German brewery equipment manufacturer. Their craftsmanship and passion for great beer will help us build a state-of-the-art brewhouse designed for consistency, quality and future growth.
We have respected our role in the community we have brewed in for over 200 years throughout the process too. We have undertaken a transparent community consultation process to shape the future of our historic Westgate Brewery site in Bury St Edmunds.
A £40 MILLION INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE OF
As part of this initiative, we've engaged with local community groups, neighbouring residents, team members and the wider community through public events, workshops, and surveys. Two rounds of engagement were held in 2025, attracting hundreds of participants and generating valuable feedback on themes such as heritage, community use, green space and housing.
This is a major moment for brewing in Bury. A blend of heritage and progress. Tradition and innovation. And a commitment to supporting our customers with the quality, consistency and innovation they expect from us.

Another summer sporting favourite kicks-off in SW1, it must be Pimms o’clock!
ith the higher cost of living and customers struggling with lower levels of disposable income, we know that it is harder to get customers to keep coming to the pub for food and drink. We have to give customers more reasons to visit the pub, and entertainment and events are key ways to do this.
54% of our respondents said they’d been to a pub quiz and 64% said they plan to go to a pub quiz in the future.
KEY FEATURES OF A PUB QUIZ
THAT ATTRACT CUSTOMERS ARE
A prize to win - gives a sense of accomplishment and recognition. You might want to consider first, second or third places or a runner up prize too. Plus, maybe even some spot prizes.
Healthy competition - the questions shouldn’t be too easy or too difficult. You know your customer base and their interests – make sure the topics are relevant to your customers, that might be local knowledge, sport or celebrity trivia. Variety - mix it up! You might want to include picture or music rounds to keep it interesting.
42% say they have been to see live music in a pub and 64% plan to go to live music in a pub in the future.
TOP TIPS TO MAXIMISE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Stick to mainstream music - genres like rock, pop, tribute bands or local artists. You know your audience, and what their interests are. Ask around to get the right acts to appeal to your guests.
Comfortable capacity - if the event is ticketed, make sure there is space for everyone, using the right area of the venue to accommodate the act and audience so everyone can watch comfortably.
Events should complement, not compromise, the usual pub atmosphere and overall feel - lower-energy music events

are generally the most popular. Background music to enhance the mood (34%) or a central performance as the main event, which still allows socialising (45%), are the most desired atmosphere types that pubgoers are looking for.
Most customers say they are willing to pay for their team to enter a quiz or for live music – up to £5 being the sweet spot. Make sure your event is well promoted –35% find out about a pub quiz through pub social media. Word of mouth and in venue advertising are top ways of finding out about quizzes or music events
A regular slot means customers know what to expect and can help to drive frequency, particularly if a food and drink wrap-around offer is included.

hen it comes to driving footfall and increasing spend, the most successful venues give customers reasons to visit. Whether it is a major sporting fixture, a bank holiday weekend, a seasonal celebration or a weekly quiz night, today’s guests are increasingly choosing pubs with purpose.
By planning around key dates, building your own event calendar and aligning your drinks and food offer to each occasion, you can turn ordinary nights into standout trading opportunities.

Every calendar is filled with commercial opportunity. National occasions such as Bank Holidays, Father's Day and major sporting tournaments naturally drive demand. But regional race days, town festivals, university return dates and local team fixtures can be just as powerful. Customers actively look for venues that are marking the moment. Promote upcoming dates early, use social media to build anticipation and ensure your venue feels ready for the occasion with the right atmosphere, point of sale and team engagement. Forward planning also allows you to build stock levels and staffing around expected demand, helping you maximise both footfall and profitability.
BECOMING “THE PLACE TO BE” IS NOT ONLY ABOUT NATIONAL EVENTS. IT IS ABOUT CONSISTENCY.
Weekly quiz nights, live music Fridays, themed food evenings or seasonal beer showcases create habit. When customers know what happens in your venue each week, you become part of their routine rather than a last-minute decision.
91% * OF PUBGOERS HAVE ATTENDED PUB EVENTS
Simple mechanics can make a big difference. A well run quiz encourages longer dwell time. A live music night creates atmosphere that supports premium drinks sales. A themed cocktail evening gives customers something new to try.

*Out of 2000 customers spoken to by Greene King
Offer breadth across drinks categories to give every customer a reason to visit, stay longer and spend more.
• Beer and cider are central to big sporting occasions and busy weekends, with premium world lager and craft options supporting trade-up.
• Stock the brands your customers want within each category. Greene King IPA, for example, appeals strongly to younger adult drinkers, with twice as many 25–34 year olds drinking it compared with the cask category average.
• Wine plays an important role in social gatherings and food-led events, so highlight options that align with seasonal key dates.
• Spirits and cocktails are key for celebratory nights, with simple serves, bundles or pre-batched options helping speed up service.
• Make premium soft drinks clearly visible so every guest feels catered for.
• Train staff to recommend food pairings and upsell during events to increase spend per head.
Use this checklist to help your venue stand out:
• Identify key national and regional dates
• Promote your own weekly or monthly events
• Align drinks range to each occasion
• Ensure low and no-alcohol options are visible
• Plan simple, sharable food offers
• Position crisps and snacks for impulse sales
• Brief staff on upselling opportunities
• Ensure POS and branded assets are in place
• Review staffing and stock for peak nights
DRINKS MAY DRIVE THE VISIT, BUT FOOD INCREASES DWELL TIME AND TOTAL SALES.
Event-led menus do not need to be complicated. Sharing platters, wings, loaded fries and grazing options work well for social occasions and group bookings. Limited-time specials can also create theatre and encourage repeat visits.
Do not overlook the value of traditional bar snacks. Crisps, nuts and other impulse options remain highly effective, particularly when positioned clearly on the bar and linked to drink bundles.

“I had a business nearby and this was my lunchtime and after work retreat. It was a great local, a place that I had great affection for, so when Greene King put it up for sale, I decided in a moment of madness to invest in it and that was 15 years ago.”
So, what exactly was it that inspired Peter’s ‘moment of madness’.
“It was just after the 2008 recession and pensions were doing very little, I could only invest in commercial property, so I decided to invest my pension fund in the pub.”
“I thought I could inject fresh life back into it and it could continue to be a great venue, and I feel that in the current climate we’re punching well above our weight.”
“Like a few other pubs in the town, I think it was put up for sale as a building plot more than as a going concern. But I thought I could put some
life back into it and return it to its former glory and I feel that in the current climate we’re punching well above our weight.”
With their investment in Sky and TNT allowing them to show football matches, the pub’s longserving manager, Maxine also explained how despite being 13 and a half miles from Ipswich Town’s Portman Road stadium they have become a convenient watering hole for fans attending live matches too.
“Supporters will come in here before a home match, and because we’re right next to the station they can hop on the 2.30pm train and be in the ground in time for a 3pm kick-off. Then they get back on the train and head back here to either celebrate or drown their sorrows. That makes a big difference for us.”
After buying the pub from Greene King, Peter initially distanced himself from the brewer. However,
he has been happy to reconnect with the brand in recent years.
“It made sense, as they provided me with a good business offer across their range. Also, we’re only 15 miles from their headquarters in Bury St Edmunds, so we have excellent access.”
“I’m still quite analogue and I prefer us to order over the phone and Maxine enjoys a great relationship with Christine in the telesales team there – they are terrific in pointing out all the offers that are available to us.”
“We’ve been working with Kate our SDM for around three years now, she keeps us on our toes, and we’ve developed a really good rapport. In fact, the relationship we enjoy with all of the Greene King staff is just as important as price to me. Customer service is their strength, and we love all the POS that they provide us with too.”

Greene King now offers a wider range than ever before and their relationships with the other big players makes it much easier for us to stay with a single supplier

“We’re very much a local pub and last year we raised over £15,000 for various local charities and that’s down to the tremendous generosity of our customers.”
The last 15 years has been quite a journey for the Little Wellington and Peter looks back with a great deal of satisfaction at what he and his team has managed to achieve.
“I’m very proud that the pub is still in existence and is now thriving. We have tremendous fun in here on a Sunday afternoon. We play a silly game called ‘loot in the boot’, which reflects our name the Little Wellington. We sell raffle tickets to collect a kitty and then we divide the cash up into eight little Wellington boots, we then draw three tickets and if your number comes up you get to select a wellie – some of them will contain a big prize and others will have smaller prizes. If the big prize isn’t won, then it rolls over up to a maximum of £500 when we draw until we have a winner.
“We’re very much a local pub and last year we raised over
£15,000 for various local charities and that’s down to the tremendous generosity of our customers. Greene King also gave us the match ball from the Ipswich v Norwich match which we raffled off and that raised over £1,100 on its own for the local foodbank.”
Peter appreciates the wideranging support he receives from Greene King and views the relationship as a two-way street.
“Kate has been a great support. Last summer we held our ‘Wellie Weekender’ and she arranged for us to borrow a mobile bar to use outside. We’re always discussing ideas as to how we can make the best of what we’ve got.
“Greene King now offers a wider range than ever before and their relationships with the other big players makes it much easier for us to stay with a single supplier.
“It’s a hard job running a pub and the things that Kate and the team at Greene King do to make our lives easier really means a lot to all of us here.”
With 27 years at Greene King under her belt, Sales Development Manager Kate uses all her experience, to in her own words: “Make things happen and make them happen quickly.”
“Being in the company for as long as I have, it’s sometimes not what you know, but who you know, and I pride myself on knowing who to go to so that I can get the best service for my customers.”
“I started out in the telesales team and I was persuaded to go out onto the road and the role has enabled me to enjoy building many long-term relationships, just like I have here with Peter and Maxine.”

As an award-winning broker, and part of one of the largest insurance groups in the world, Howden have wide access to the insurance market, plus the leverage to deliver for clients.
With an experienced and passionate team, Howden offers clear guidance throughout the insurance process and dependable support whenever it’s needed.

A chance conversation with his Greene King Sales Development Manager led to Martin, the owner of the Kings Head in North Lopham enjoying a massive saving on his insurance costs, as he explains:
“Our insurance was a significant hit each month. I’d already shopped around and gone to a lot of brokers in the market who said they specialised in pub insurance, but nobody could help me. They all kept saying that nobody in the market wanted to insure me because the pub is Grade II listed and thatched.
“When I asked our Greene King sales rep who they use for insurance on their pubs. He was quick to suggest a company who might be able to help. Only a couple of days later, Maria from Howden contacted me and said
Greene King had put her in touch with me.”
And it would be fair to say that Martin was impressed by Maria’s response.
“I sent her through all my details and the figures I was paying at the time, and she said, “Leave it with me.” When she came back, she had some great news. She’d managed to reduce my insurance premium by £6,000 a year. I honestly couldn’t believe it.”
However, as you might expect, some conditions were attached.
“We’ve got to install a fire suppression system in the kitchenbut that’s fair enough, because it’s a safety feature we should really have anyway. What was also brilliant was that Howden, through the underwriters, offered to pay for half the cost of that system as well. I never even asked them to, but they came back and said they would be happy to contribute.
“So from start to finish, we’ve received brilliant service. To get £6,000 off our premium was just amazing. It equates to a saving of £500 a month, which is absolutely superb.
Following his own positive experience, Martin has urged other pub owners to contact Howden for a quote.
“With costs spiralling at the moment with oil, petrol and everything else, a £6,000 saving was huge for us. Greene King’s referral was a wonderful help to me and if anybody else can also benefit from it, then that’s great too.”

Make a difference with Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen on Sunday 21st June
For pubs and venues, Father’s Day has become one of the most commercially important occasions of the summer trading calendar. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday 21st June and hopefully it will be accompanied by some warmer weather for the start of the peak beer garden season.
Father’s Day is a relatively modern concept, beginning in the USA in 1910. In the UK, Father’s Day gained popularity in the late 20th century as the hospitality sector embraced this family-focused celebration.
Father’s Day has the potential to be one of your busiest Sundays of the year. Industry data shows bookings for pubs
and venues rise significantly around the day, and families tend to stay longer and spend more as they enjoy time together.
Let’s use this day to bring families together in your venues and deliver a valuable boost to sales. Beer remains the classic Father’s Day drink, with cask ale offering a fresh, real living beer aligned with modern tastes, when will you have a better time to promote Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen?
You’ll have received your crowners in with this copy of your Value For Venues magazine, use these to create a fun, engaging display and ensure your Dads are choosing the right pints they can truly enjoy.
