Trump announces ceasefire with Iran, fends off allegations that the US caved

Attacks on facilities in Teheran, Iran

On Tuesday evening after weeks of mixed messaging on our progress in the Iran war turned into threats to end the nation’s entire “civilization,” President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce a two-week pause on his plans to start bombing Iranian bridges, electricity plants, and factories because a ceasefire has been negotiated And because we’ve all heard this song before, folks on social media seem to largely believe that Trump caved to end the war that is bringing his administration nothing but embarrassment and bad press

This past Sunday April 5th, Spiver Gordon held a commemoration program to honor civil rights leaders in observance of the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr s assassination The program was held in the William M Branch courthouse a building rich with its own civil rights history Dr Carolyn Branch set the tone with her passionate talk about local national and international connections to MLK’s legacy and our nation's current political struggles such as voting rights

John Zippert began the presentations by introducing the audience to Joanne

Bland Bland is known as the youngest civil rights activist to have ever been jailed at eight years old alongside her grandmother who was attempting to register to vote After this instance, Bland was jailed thirteen times by the age of eleven during further demonstrations against the administration keeping Black adults from voting Zippert highlighted her remarkable activism in Selma, Alabama, during Bloody Sunday and for bringing MLK and the SCLC into the Selma Voting Rights struggle She'd been honored for her commitments to civil rights by Representative Terry

Sewell on the House Floor when she passed away on February 19, 2026 Rev Dr William M Branch III spoke about his father William Branch the namesake of the courthouse He honored him for his kindness towards White citizens even during the height of the Voting Rights Movement in Greene County Branch was certain that kindness toward everyone would ultimately lead to a civil, peaceful path forward in today's political climate Dr Monty Thornburg gave remarks about Dr Brown by providing a photo booklet titled “50 Years of Exile” The docu-

ment highlighted foot soldiers like Robert Brown, Spiver Gordon, and Lorenzo French, who were attacked in an attempt to erase Black History Dr Thornburg also reminded everyone that Elder Gordon made Brown’s monument and the renaming of the Robert Brown Middle School possible in 2016, fifty years from when Dr Brown was "exiled" to Tishabee We wouldn t be here if it weren t for Spiver preserving all this history ”

Town of Boligee dedicates New Substation to Gr eene County Sherif f Depar tment

April 1, 2026 In a small ceremony held at the Boligee Community Center, the mayor and town council of Boligee officially dedicated a new substation for the Greene County Sheriff ’s Department Located within the Boligee Community Center, the facility will serve as a vital hub for law enforcement, strengthening public safety and enhancing the department’s presence in the community

counted the work of Dr Bernard Lafayette, a Baptist minister and civil rights leader who also played a role in the Selma Voting Rights Movement Lafayette founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to mobilize students with peaceful and direct action protests like those demonstrated during Freedom Summer of 1964 Elder Gordon recalled moments where Lafayette was called derogatory caricatures like Uncle Tom yet he maintained his composure and prayed for those disgruntled

They hoped we weren t paying attention

While the country was watching fighter jets and debating troop deployments, while the administration’s shock-and-awe news cycle churned through one manufactured crisis after another, a quieter and far more dangerous move was playing out in plain sight

On the first day of his second term, President Trump signed an executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship in the United States Not through Congress Not through the constitutional amendment process the framers required Through a stroke of a pen

This is one of the most brazen assaults on American democracy this administration has attempted And it was designed to slide through the noise

It must and will not

The 14th Amendment ratified in 1868 includes a citizenship clause that confers citizenship on anyone born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof The amendment simply constitutionalized centuries of precedent based on English common law

And let us remind America, that this was a direct repudiation of the Dred Scott decision, which denied Black people the protections of U S citizenship The amendment was the nation’s promise to itself that never again would the

government get to decide that a person born on this soil was something less than American

That promise is now under attack

Trump has argued that the amendment was meant for the slaves for the children of slaves ” Let that land for a moment

The administration’s own framing acknowledges the 14th Amendment was written to protect Black people, and then argues that its protections should be narrower than the text plainly states

This is not a legal argument It is a political ideology, rooted in White Supremacy, seeking to legally discriminate who really counts based arbitrarily by a select few

The assault on birthright citizenship is anti-Black not only in its history but in its logic When you establish the principle that citizenship can be conditioned on the legal status of your parents, you create the infrastructure for a permanent underclass You open the door to generations of people born in America raised in America who are American in every lived sense, but who can be told they do not belong If Trump’s order were allowed to stand, an estimated 2 7 million additional people would be unauthorized by 2045 and 5 4 million more by 2075 These are not abstractions These are children And disproportionately, they are children of color

Advocates have warned this risks creating a permanent underclass for some immigrant groups transforming the cultural and civic fabric of the country Communities of color, already navigating the cumulative weight of structural inequality, would face an additional burden; proving their belonging in the only country they have ever known

That is not America at its founding promise That is America at its worst

Every federal court that has considered a challenge to the executive order has struck it down The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Trump v Barbara this week and a majority of the justices appeared skeptical of the administration’s position Even Chief Justice Roberts noted that we may live in a new world, but we have the same Constitution We agree A Supreme Court ruling is expected by the end of June or early July

lions of Americans took to the streets under a simple banner: “No Kings ” More than 3 000 protests were organized across the country Demonstrations filled not only the expected places Washington, New York Chicago but also towns that rarely see political marches: Midland, Michigan; Casper, Wyoming; McMinnville and Tillamook Oregon In communities like these residents gathered in parks and town squares carrying handmade signs and a message that sits at the heart of the American story

This country does not have kings

At first glance the slogan sounds almost quaint something lifted from a civics textbook The United States fought a revolution to rid itself of monarchy, and the idea that one person should stand above the law is supposed to be foreign to the American political tradition

But the people who gathered last Saturday were not simply protesting a personality or even a presidency What they expressed was something deeper a

growing sense that the political system increasingly serves the powerful while ordinary Americans are told there is nothing left for them

That contradiction is visible almost everywhere

Congress can assemble $200 billion for war with remarkable speed even as American troops once again find themselves with boots on the ground in an undeclared conflict yet student borrowers are told that meaningful relief is unrealistic or unaffordable Housing costs continue their relentless rise while wages struggle to keep pace Millions of Americans carry student debt that will shape their financial futures for decades

Even the people who keep the country’s basic systems operating often live with the greatest economic insecurity Transportation Security Administration workers, the people who check our bags and scan our boarding passes, offer a telling example During government shutdowns or political standoffs these workers are often required to keep showing up for work even when their paychecks are delayed

Eventually they receive their back pay But back pay does not erase the damage done in the meantime

Rent is still due on the first of the month Credit card bills arrive on schedule Utility companies expect payment whether Congress is functioning or not When paychecks stop,

many TSA workers must borrow from family miss payments or fall behind on bills Late fees accumulate Credit scores drop The government may eventually restore their wages but it cannot restore the late fees, damaged credit, or weeks of financial anxiety

Seen in that light the chant of “No Kings” carries meaning beyond constitutional symbolism It reflects a concern that power in a democracy is supposed to flow upward from the people rather than downward from those who wield it

One striking feature of last Saturday s demonstrations was not just their size but their geography

Protests appeared not only in traditional centers of activism but also in smaller communities that rarely host large demonstrations

Residents assembled in Casper Wyoming a city in one of the nation s most reliably Republican states

Demonstrators gathered in Midland Michigan a community where presidential elections often tilt conservative In Oregon towns like McMinnville and Tillamook people rallied far from Portland s familiar protest culture

That matters When demonstrations appear in smaller towns and politically mixed communities, they often signal something larger than partisan disagreement They suggest that frustration with the direction of the political system is spreading beyond the usual activist circles

None of this guarantees

policy change

Protest movements rarely produce legislative victories overnight What they do reveal, however, is the mood of the country And the mood right now is uneasy Americans are watching enormous sums flow toward military conflict even as economic pressures mount at home Housing prices strain household budgets, student debt continues to shadow younger generations and workers performing essential public roles from airport security to public transit often live paycheck to paycheck while keeping critical systems running Under those circumstances people inevitably begin to ask whom the system ultimately serves When government appears able to mobilize vast resources for some priorities while struggling to address the economic burdens facing ordinary citizens, the distance between democratic ideals and everyday experience becomes difficult to ignore

Last Saturday in thousands of towns and cities across the country, Americans gathered to remind the nation of a principle that still defines democracy

The sub-minimum wage for tipped workers is a legacy of slavery

After the Civil War, many employers in hospitality and rail service hired newly freed Black workers into jobs where tips often replaced wages Tips became, for too many workers, the wage itself That injustice still lives on today in the form of a lower minimum wage for tipped workers

We should call that system what it is: an old injustice that never ended

Today it does not just hurt Black workers It hurts tipped workers of every race It leaves millions of people with unstable incomes Too many workers finish a shift without

The National Urban League has stood against every attempt to diminish the citizenship dignity and rights of Black and brown Americans since 1910 We know what it looks like when government uses the machinery of law to shrink the circle of who belongs

knowing whether they earned enough to cover rent groceries or childcare

It also leaves workers more vulnerable to harassment When your livelihood depends on pleasing the customer in front of you even when that customer is drunk crude or predatory the power imbalance is obvious No worker should have to put up with humiliation to earn enough to live No decent society should accept that as normal

Yet for decades, the corporate restaurant lobby has fought to preserve exactly that arrangement Its argument is always the same: pay workers fairly and the industry will suffer But what it is really defending is a business model built on paying some workers less and making customers close the gap Chicago is right to reject that model

Today, tipped workers in Chicago can still be paid $12 62 an hour before tips, while the full city minimum wage is $16 60 The city s 2023 law was designed to close that gap over time ending the tip credit by July 1 2028 And

when the City Council moved last month to freeze that progress Mayor Brandon Johnson vetoed the measure and fought to keep the phaseout in place

He deserves credit for that

Because this fight is bigger than restaurants

We are living through twin crises of affordability and democracy The first shows up at the kitchen table Rent is too high

Groceries are too high

Child care is too high Too many families work hard and still cannot get ahead

The second shows up in the growing number of working people who no longer believe democracy can improve their lives

Those crises are connected

When government moves quickly to protect loopholes for powerful interests and slowly to raise wages for working people faith in democracy erodes

People start to believe the system is rigged because too often it is But when leaders stand up to lobbyists and fight for the people who do the work, democracy starts to feel real again

That is why this matters

The issue here is dignity

It is whether a woman serving your dinner should have to tolerate harassment to make enough to buy groceries It is whether a man working a late shift should have to wonder if a weak night in tips means his child goes without It is whether labor will be respected in this country or merely used

A tip should be what it was always supposed to be: extra It should not be an employer s excuse not to pay a real wage

And the principle should not stop with tipped workers In a country as rich as ours the minimum wage should be a living wage with no carveouts, no loopholes, and no second-class categories of worker

Chicago has a chance to say something to the nation: work has dignity and every worker deserves a full wage Mayor Johnson is right to keep fighting Now the city should finish the job Ben Jealous is a professor of practice at the University of Pennsylvania and former National President & CEO of the NAACP

And to those in power who believe the noise of the moment will drown out accountability, it will not

We are watching the courts We are watching the Congress We are watching the ballot box

We have seen this before and we have fought it before and we are fighting it now To the communities living under the shadow of this executive order, we see you To the children whose citizenship should never have been in question you are American and we will defend that truth

American democracy has survived every attempt to hollow it out from within because the people it was built to exclude refused to stop demanding what was theirs

(TriceEdneyWire com)A federal appellate court order effectively ended the popular Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) program The likely effect will be an increased financial strain on 7 million borrowers who used the program to keep their monthly student loan repayments affordable and manageable Secondly, SAVE prevented balances from growing due to unpaid interest

Other recent developments at the Education Department (ED) will make it more difficult for the current 42 8 million federal student loan borrowers to repay their collective $1 69 trillion in outstanding loans, as well as increase the likelihood that repayments will not be applied accurately

The SAVE program provided the bulk of its benefits to students with the greatest financial need –those eligible for federal Pell grants –including Black Latino Native American and Alaskan Native borrowers A recent study by The Century Foundation and Protect Borrowers anticipates that Black and Native American borrowers will be hit hardest by the end of SAVE The study expects that the Southeast will see the largest number of loan delinquencies as a result

“This outcome is unacceptable at a time when working families already face skyrocketing energy prices and a rising cost of living that is deepening the national affordability crisis ” said Mitria Spotser vice president and federal policy director at the Center for Responsible Lending

“Student loan policy should expand opportunity not pull the rug out from Americans who relied on strong borrower protections and relief Moreover, ending affordable repayment options through a backroom settlement not only places millions of families under unnecessary financial strain, but it also raises serious concerns about transparency and fairness ” Spotser concluded A similar reaction came from the National Consumer Law Center

“Families relied on the SAVE plan to afford student loan payments while managing the rising costs of rent groceries childcare, and healthcare, observed Abby Shafroth, managing director of advocacy at the National Consumer Law Center “By eliminating SAVE the Department is pulling the rug out from under these families and raising their bills while people struggle to afford the basics ”

One day after the SAVE court order a newly released report added yet another dimension of worry for borrowers

Between January and December 2025 Education Department staff reductions eliminated 656 personnel, leaving only 777 to carry out all departmental functions As a result, the agency lost its ability to effectively monitor loan servicers and further added to a still-growing backlog of

borrower requests The report stemmed from a request to review the Education Department’s capacity to carry out its statutory responsibilities The General Accounting Office (GAO) the independent audit, evaluation, and investigative arm of Congress audited the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) documentation servicers’ performance and billing reports and applicable laws GAO also interviewed FSA officials as well as representatives of borrower advocacy organizations

Specifically in February 2025, the Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) stopped assessing student loan servicers on accuracy and call quality due to lack of staff capacity, according to agency officials Prior to discontinuing these quarterly assessments, FSA assessed servicers on two important metrics:

• A c c uracy - FSA would review data for borrowers in servicer systems and compare it to data in FSA systems to determine if servicers were keeping accurate records for borrowers

• Call quality - FSA would review phone calls between borrowers and servicers to determine if servicers provided good and accurate customer service

• Due to these staff reductions borrowers who made payments in good faith now have no guarantee that their monies will be properly applied As the report concludes:

“Education reduced its workforce by half and stopped key oversight of its loan servicers which help manage a portfolio of more than $1 6 trillion in federal student loans By discontinuing assessments of servicer accuracy and call quality the agency risks overpaying servicers for poor service In turn, borrowers may face financial consequences related to overbilling or being placed in the wrong loan repayment status

In a February 11 letter Richard Lucas, Acting Chief Operating Officer, rejected the report’s recommendations for improving servicer oversight saying in part, The Department of Education does not concur with the recommendation that FSA needs to reinstitute certain metrics introduced under the previous administration Consumer advocates vehemently disagree

“[S]tudent loan servicers the private companies profiteering off pushing working families further into debt are allowed to get off scot free for failing to do their jobs,” stated Protect Borrowers Policy Director “This could not come at a worse time as millions of SAVE borrowers will be forced out of their repayment plan and have no other choice but to rely on their servicer to maintain access to an affordable repayment option Congress must hold this Administration accountable and demand that ED engage in critical oversight of its contractors ”

Senate Sketches #2024.....by Hank Sander s Invisible Giants

Invisible Giants In our perceptions, giants are larger than life Therefore, they are more visible But some Giants are invisible because we refuse to see them Invisible Giants

The Annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee presents a program each year that inducts women who have made history into the Invisible Giants Hall of Fame

These are all women who made history, but history did not recognize or acknowledge them They are invisible to society The Invisible Giants Inductions lift a few of these women each year March is Women’s History Month I intended to lift some women but failed Of course, this Sketches cover the period from March 28th to April 3rd I want to lift several of the women Giants who lifted me Invisible Giants I hesitate to select just several of the many women who lifted me because so many have lifted me and have lifted countless others However, it would be wrong to not lift any because I cannot lift all at the same time I have lifted some, such as my dear wife Faya Rose Toure in previous Sketches Invisible Giants

I want to lift three Invisible Giant women on this Women’s History Month occasion One is my mother, Ola Mae Sanders

A second is my mother by marriage Ora Lee Gaines

A third is one of my teachers, Margaret Montgomery All three of these women have been mentioned in previous Sketches but I do not believe that I lifted them in relation to their being Invisible Giants or during Women’s History Month Invisible Giants

My Mother, Ola Mae Sanders, was a giant She battled to make me a better person when I challenged her time after time in my terrible and willful selfrighteousness She overcame the challenges of oppressive poverty She overcame the challenges of a 7th grade education She overcame the challenges of birthing 13 children and raising 12 of them to productive adulthood with a hardworking husband with a 1st grade education She overcame the challenges of being an outcast in her own family She overcame the racial and gender discrimination so deeply embedded in American society Invisible Giants

Ola Mae Sanders never stopped serving and climbing and reaching higher She eventually started and operated the Nellie Lee Elmore Clark Day Care Center in Bay Minette, Alabama She was a fearless community leader At her funeral, one of the men talked about how strong she was in challenging injustices and how the men drew strength from her and stood stronger and taller because of her strength

Ola Mae Sanders was a fighter for justice Invisible Giants

People valued Ola Mae’s advice so much they would come from miles around to seek her advice She gave so much good advice to so many that some people in the community lovingly called her Lawyer Sanders Even today, I use many of her sayings and examples in my communications She touched my life and so many other lives in profound ways, and I lift her as an invisible giant Invisible Giants

Ora Lee Gaines came into my life by way of my wife, Faya Rose Toure, formerly Rose Mary Gaines

Ora Lee Gaines was born in Mobile, Alabama and

married Damon A Gaines who pastored for more than 50 years He was assigned to many different churches in North Carolina Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama She was always serving in her role as the Pastor ’s wife and in the community They raised five children together She often held two day/night jobs while serving as mother wife and pastor ’s wife Invisible Giants

Ora Lee Gaines rose to giant status with the McRae Gaines Learning Center The Center was started by Faya Rose Toure and me The college-educated director we recruited left her position to start her own day care center We wondered what we would do We didn’t know that there was an Invisible Giant among us Invisible Giants

Ora Lee Gaines stepped into the role of Interim Director and then Director She did not have a college degree She did not simply maintain McRae Gaines Learning Center; she took it to higher heights It touched thousands of students Students learned to read at 2 and 3 years of age They developed strong senses of themselves and their potential from their earliest years Invisible Giants

McRae grew from preschool all the way up to 7th Grade It was known for excellence far and wide Ora Lee Gaines infused Black history and culture into the curriculum and daily activities McRae, with its students and teachers traveled across this country and beyond for unforgettable learning experiences McRae opened in 1976, Mother Gaines transitioned in 2008 and McRae Gaines is still educating children today Ola Lee Gaines believed so strongly in the ability of all children to learn that her motto was If children don’t learn, it’s because teachers didn’t teach ” Even now teachers still tell us about how Ora Lee Gaines would come into their classrooms and take children to teach who were not learning when teachers believed they could not learn Mrs Gaines taught them, and the students learned Every student learned Ora Lee Gaines is an Invisible Giant who overcame the ever-present discrimination against women and people of African descent to leave a lasting legacy of service We appreciate that Sadie Moss came and carried on at McRae Gaines after Ora Lee Gaines transitioned Invisible Giants

Margaret Montgomery was one of my teachers at Talladega College a Historically Black College in Alabama She was a White woman teaching at a Black college Margaret Montgomery touched my life from the very first day of my college life She never stopped touching my life until I graduated from Talladega and Harvard Law School Even then, the roots she helped sink deep into my being and world continued to nourish and lift me They still do Invisible Giants

Margaret Montgomery urged me to take part in plays to overcome my shyness and stuttering She encouraged me to write when I did not feel like writing and this has served me throughout my life Margaret Montgomery arranged for me to get scholarships and work when I had no way to continue in school at Talladega She arranged for me to attend Harvard Summer School in 1965 on a full scholarship and Boston

University in 1965 on a full-ride scholarship that included tuition, room and board books and spending money She was also instrumental in my receiving a full scholarship for room and board and books at Harvard Law School Invisible Giants

I eventually discovered that I was not the only student this White woman at this Historical Black College helped in so many extraordinary ways They are legions of us Margaret Montgomery never married or birthed children We were her family; we were her children Margaret Montgomery was an Invisible White Woman Giant lifting so many Black students in powerful, lifechanging ways that were unseen to most Invisible Giants

SUNDAY – I hosted the Sunday School Lesson with Faya Rose Toure from Houston Texas on Facebook Live and Z105 3 FM Radio Station I spent family time discussing community issues over dinner and participated in a counseling session for a younger couple and watched basketball games Among others I communicated with Sharon Wheeler of Montgomery

MONDAY – Faya and I left Houston Texas early driving more than 600 miles back to Selma We stopped briefly in Lake Charles Louisiana to visit a friend who is recovering from a stroke Among others, I communicated with the following: Dr Carol Prejean Zippert of Lake Charles, Louisiana; Alabama New South Coalition President Everette Wess; and Josephine Curtis and Dr Margaret Hardy of Selma

In response to the 47th president s spending bill, Georgia Rep Nikema Williams (D) introduced the Maternal Health Equity Under Medicaid Act to raise federal matching rates to 90 percent for Medicaid expenditures on maternal healthcare

Nearly 1 in 5 or 20 percent of rural adults and 40 percent of rural children rely on Medicaid or Children Health Insurance Program Amid cost concerns, rural Americans also face geographic challenges that present threats to healthcare

Most live an average of 10 5 miles from the nearest hospital, versus just 4 4 miles for their urban counterparts according to the National Rural Health Association

Medicaid is the largest payer of maternity care in this country and must be part of the solution to the maternal health crisis Too many people are still falling through cracks in our healthcare system, especially Black mamas who continue to face a worsening maternal health crisis,” Williams said in a statement noting that 42 percent of births are financed by Medicaid

Still, women who enroll in Medicaid in their third trimester have a 4 7 times higher likelihood of experiencing maternal mortality and a 1 5 times higher risk for infant mortality, according to her office

“Raising the federal match for maternal care will give states the resources they need to expand care and save lives As Republicans threaten devastating Medicaid cuts this legislation is a clear statement: we must invest in care, not cruelty, the Georgia lawmaker said

As of 2022, more than two-thirds of rural hospitals in eight states were without obstetric services according to a Health Affairs study From 2010- 2022 12 states also reported the loss of 25 percent or more obstetric services in rural hospitals

The mass closures of obstetric wings in rural hospitals have been a major issue for years now In North Carolina, 40 percent of our counties have no facilities at all for maternity care The passage of the Big Beautiful Bill I like to call it the Big Ugly Bill is only going to make these issues so much worse Labor and delivery units are often the first to get cut when hospital budgets get low, Rep Alma Adams (D-N C ) told the AFRO

This bill made major cuts to Medicaid dollars, which hospitals rely on to stay afloat It also created new restrictions making it more difficult to remain eligible for Medicaid,” she added

The United States remains the only developed country with a rising maternal mortality rate, according to UNICEF, with deaths skewed towards women of color

After all Trump has been claiming for weeks that Iran is “begging” for a deal and that the administration had very very strong talks and points of agreement only for the Iranian government to deny the talks are even happening Trump previously told reporters that a 15-point proposal to end the war was sent to the Iranian government, and that it “gave us most of the points ” only for the Iranian government to completely reject Trump’s terms shortly after

Now, Trump is saying Iran s 10-point counter-proposal to the U S is a workable basis on which to negotiate, which really makes it seem like he was the one begging for a deal,” especially since the contents of Iran’s 10-point plan seem to largely benefit Iran

I mean Iran even included a $2 million toll on ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz that no one had to pay before Trump decided to help the Israeli government launch an unprovoked war on Iran What exactly are we winning here?

That’s a lot of tough talk, only for Trump to eagerly announce that he is open to Iran’s demands, which, again, came after the nation rejected his And that’s why Trump and his administration are scrambling to force-feed Americans the narrative that it s a mutual deal that both nations will benefit from and he s out here launching investigations against any media outlet that says otherwise In fact, Trump had another one of his social media meltdowns after CNN reported, “Iran claims victory says it forced US to accept 10-point plan ” and that the Iranian Security Council said in a statement “The enemy in its unfair unlawful and criminal war against the Iranian nation, has suffered an undeniable, historic, and crushing defeat

Climate change also encourages the growth of invasive species which is happening right now and causing the population to increase exponentially An increase in invasive species can lead to a rapid decrease in native plants reducing biodiversity and making environments more prone to natural disasters

Managed relocation is the process of helping plants move into new areas with better climate conditions

Although the extent to which humans should intervene is debated, assisted migration is increasingly accepted as a necessary conservation strategy Choosing which plants to relocate and where to move them involves several factors Scientists have found

that there is an overlap between invasive traits and restoration Therefore choosing plants that have traits associated with invasive species is necessary as they often provide the tools necessary to create a plan for survival in a foreign environment Apart from those it's important to focus on traits that are helpful such as high metabolic rate and large size

Today, there are many types of ongoing conservation efforts Seed banking includes gathering seeds from multiple plants to ensure the possibility of future reintroduction Habitat protection involves preserving natural environments from destruction, helping to maintain biodiversity and providing a safe refuge for native species Planting native species for enhances the durability of the ecosys-

tem from natural disasters

Research and monitoring give us feedback about plants response to climate change as well as new conservation efforts to use which is important for policy feedback

health workforce diversification and data collection with over $1 billion in proposed investments dedicated to solving the maternal mortality crisis

While lawmakers address issues through policy, doulas have also been stepping in to bridge the gap by providing travel services to address the lack of care in rural communities

“Historically doulas were responsible for assisting those giving birth and midwives and were often among the few enslaved individuals who were allowed to travel due to the indispensability of their services However, as births moved into hospitals, the non-clinical support system declined removing an invaluable service for expectant mothers, particularly those within communities disproportionately affected by maternal mortality rates and limited access to medical care and birthing services ” according to Valerie Rochester chief health equity officer at Creating Healthier Communities (CHC)

Racial Reckoning

But new research released Tuesday shows that such financial gains for many Black-led nonprofits were short-lived, if they happened at all A subset of large, Black-led nonprofits saw only temporary funding increases between 2020 and 2022, according to the analysis by nonprofit research service Candid and Black philanthropy group ABFE Smaller organizations saw no significant change

The pattern of disinvestment put many community groups at a greater disadvantage when President Donald Trump's policies curtailed funding for diversity, equity and inclusion The nonprofit sector's struggles deepened as the administration threatened a range of social service programs, left future grants uncertain by cutting agency staff and chilled racial justice funding through anti-DEI executive orders

Black Voters Matter co-founder Cliff Albright noted these community nonprofits are the same ones now tasked with helping more and more low-income families deal with spiking healthcare costs and rising food prices "We're literally being asked to do more with less resources " Albright told The Associated Press

Small Black-led nonprofits tended to have to rely on new rather than continuing funders, losing out on transformational relationships that sustain their longer-term goals and cushion them through challenging periods These small organizations those with annual expenses of $1 million or less got just over one-third of their funding from continuing supporters according to the report

The dynamic rang true for a South Side Chicago group serving a predominantly Black neighborhood among the city's most impoverished Asiaha Butler, the CEO of the Resident Association of Greater Englewood, cofounded the nonprofit more than 15 years ago to empower her neighbors to combat their area's negative narratives

That mission had a handful of consistent backers But summer 2020 brought more than two dozen new funders "All of a sudden, we were desirable for people to fund," recalled Butler, adding the spurt became a curse as the quick infusion of capital tapered off

"We started seeing this revenue and thinking we're gaining really great relationships with funders " she said "And really those priorities shifted quickly "

Lacking relationships

Foundations lacked relationships with Black organizations of any scale prior to 2020, according to ABFE CEO Susan Taylor Batten

Black philanthropy professionals say that distance created a scramble when protestors demanded businesses and philanthropies address systemic racism

Kia Croom whose fundraising firm works with nonprofits in Black communities said her clients received more funding than ever from corporations Some hired additional development staff to meet the demand and then underwent layoffs when funds disappeared "It was just a very transactional gift at best " she said

Positive Results Center CEO Kandee Lewis oversees a Los Angeles nonprofit assisting survivors of domestic violence and other harms It was wonderful, she said, to receive checks from new supporters But oftentimes, the support turned out to be a one-time donation rather than the beginning of a relationship Lewis felt the funding came only because her group was Black-led not because funders understood its work "They were so busy trying to figure out who was who that they didn't really take time to get to know people " she said

Limited networks

Jaleesa Hall knows philanthropy is a relationship game She heads Raising A Village Foundation which aims to advance educational equity through tutoring programs She didn't have many high net worth members in her network when she founded the Washington, D C , nonprofit more than six years ago

That circle made it difficult to catch the attention of foundations, which she said "haven't really cracked" how to find potential grantees outside of their existing web of connections

"Small Black-led nonprofits simply aren't in those rooms to begin with " Hall said

Most of their foundation grant dollars came from first-time funders, according to the report

Cathleen Clerkin, the associate vice president of research at Candid, said the nonprofits' work is made even more challenging by the "song and dance" necessary to secure longterm investment every year "They're just constantly going on first dates with new funders and hoping that somebody will invest in them and understand them, she said

Small nonprofit leaders are so focused on day-to-day upkeep and financial viability that they don't have time to attend networking opportunities or money to fly out for national convenings

T'Pring Westbrook, a nonresident fellow at the Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy, co-founded a consulting group that works with small nonprofits The problem isn't that foundations don't want to support marginalized communities, she said, but that they do so through "trend funding "

"Maybe during Black History Month there will be a funding campaign " she said "But the thing about a campaign is a campaign doesn't build sustainability "

Restrictive practices

Small nonprofits say they face additional barriers, regardless of race, including grant eligibility requirements And limited staff may prevent qualifying organizations from keeping up with foundations' required weekly or monthly reports on the status of projects they ve funded

INVITATION TO BIDDERS

Sealed proposals will be received by The Town of Forkland, until 2:00 P M , legally prevailing time April 26 2026 for the Forkland Public Safety Building in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 13327 US-43 Forkland AL 35740 at which time and place they will be publicly opened

Volunteer-driven project promotes early literacy and family engagement

EUTAW Ala (April 1 2026) Families in Greene County will soon have a new, interactive way to enjoy reading together outdoors thanks to a new StoryWalk installation at City Park in Eutaw The project, led by Success By 6 an early childhood initiative of United Way of West Alabama, will be installed on Friday, April 17, by volunteers from United Way’s Young Leaders Society and the City of Eutaw

The StoryWalk is made possible through a grant from the RC&D Council and is a collaborative effort with the Greene County Children’s Policy Council Local companies Harvest Select and Cliff Turnipseed Construction Company are also supporting the project by providing volunteers for the installation

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completed StoryWalk will be held on Saturday, May 16 at 10:30 a m at City Park in Eutaw The community is invited to attend

A StoryWalk is an innovative literacy activity that places pages of a children’s book along a walking path, allowing families to read a story together as they move from one station to the next By combining physical activity with reading, StoryWalks make literacy engaging, accessible, and fun for young children and their caregivers

erful tool for early childhood development,” said Jodi Wilson, Success By 6 Program Manager “They help build language skills, encourage family bonding, and foster a love of reading all while getting children and families outside and active

Senior Day on March 13, 2026, was nothing short of unforgettable for the graduating class of 2026 as they celebrated together at Sky Zone in Birmingham, Alabama It was a day designed to let loose, laugh, and enjoy each other ’s company

ALEA SBI launches of ficer-involved shooting investigation in Gr eensbor o

On Thursday April 2 at the request of the Hale County Sheriff s Office, Special Agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an officer-involved shooting investigation involving an Officer with the Greensboro Police Department

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p m when an Officer with the Greensboro Police Department conducted a traffic

stop in the 1000 Block of Blount Street in Greensboro, located within Hale County

During the course of the traffic stop the driver later identified as Robert Williams, 64, of Greensboro, presented a firearm and shot the Officer The Officer returned fire striking Williams Williams was transported to Hale County Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased The Officer was injured and transported to a

local area hospital for medical treatment

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor issued the following statement:
